(Yucca Valley, CA, August 3, 2022) Fresh off a second-place finish in the California Lightning Sprint car series race two weeks ago at the Ventura Raceway, Jeff Dyer will be back in action this Saturday night, August 6, for the club's next race at the Santa Maria Raceway. In addition to Jeff fighting for the title, his teenage son, Seth, will be making his Santa Maria debut.
The race will be the first for the CLS on the banked 1/3 mile oval since a pair of events there in July of last year. In those races, the Yucca Valley, California-based driver finished sixth and 11th. Due to Covid restrictions, the CLS did not appear at Santa Maria in 2020. In 2019, the longtime California racing club made one appearance there and that was on July 27th. Dyer led the first 10-laps and the final seven of that race for his only CLS victory of that season.
Coming into this week's race, Dyer has moved back into second place in the CLS championship standings and he is only 39 points out of the lead. His performance thus far in 2022 has been the best overall in his career. Thus far void of wins, he has finished no worse than fourth in only one of his 10 CLS starts. Included are five second-place finishes and two third-place results. The one time he did not place in the top four is the only race he did not finish this year. That was due to a flat tire at Ventura on June 25th.
"I feel this has been my best start to a season, for sure," Dyer affirmed when he was asked about the assessment that it has been his best year to date. "I wish we had a couple of wins, but we have been in contention every race, so I cannot complain about that."
"It is very frustrating because a majority of the second places, I have had the better car," Dyer responded when asked about waiting for his initial victory of the campaign. "I either caught lapped traffic at the wrong time or a yellow came out after I passed the leader. Circumstances that were out of my control. Maybe I should have driven harder. Those races have been frustrating. The only race I can say that I deserved second place was the last race. I did not have anything for Gasper (David Gasper)."
Seth will be making his first appearance at Santa Maria and it will be the biggest track on which he has ever raced. It will be his fifth ever lightning sprint car race. In the last two races in his new car, he has finished 10th both times at Ventura. He qualified nearly a second and a half faster the last time out.
"I think he has made big strides," Dyer said about his son's initial races in the CLS. "The first time he drove it (the new car), there were some electrical gremlins so we had to fix that and did not have time to work on the setup. The last race we were able to concentrate on his driving and setting the car up. I think he needs to get over the speed (his lightning sprint is much faster than the speedway sprint he used to drive) a little. I have noticed when he has gotten lapped, he kind of gives up a little bit. I told him he just needs to stay on the gas. I am happy with his progress and I think he will do well at Santa Maria."
For fans who would like to see the Dyer's in action on Saturday, the gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo (93444).
When you think you have seen it all with Jeff Dyer, you may need to take another look at him at Perris Auto Speedway on August 13th. Current plans have him racing a mini stock in the Night of Destruction!
Jeff is racing in memory of his grandfather Glenn Sels throughout the 2022 season.
