(Lakeside, CA, August 11, 2022) Brent Sexton, the current point leader in the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series, made a cameo appearance in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series and won the main event at the Santa Maria Raceway last Saturday. This week, the racing veteran and his two teenage sons, Dalton, and Grant, will be racing four nights in the Minn-Kota Summer Lightning Sprint Shootout in Minnesota and South Dakota.

Last week's race at Santa Maria was the first at the track since it had been shuttered in July of 2021. In addition to the CLS, the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars were also part of the grand reopening. The plan going in had Brent and Grant racing in the CLS portion of the program. Grant also participated in his second ever USAC/CRA race.

On the CLS side of the show, Grant and Brent qualified seventh and eighth respectively in the 16-car field. Brent finished second in his heat race and then fourth in the dash. That placed him on the outside of the second row for the 25-lap main event.

When the green flag dropped on the CLS main, Brent was third. The veteran driver stayed there until making a pass for second in turn two on the 13th lap. The track was extremely rough and dusty in turns one and two and when a car spun in turn two on the 16th circuit, the leader had nowhere to go and plowed into the stopped racer. That elevated Brent to the lead. The race commenced again with nine-laps left. Brent led every inch of the remaining distance and scored the win by nearly a half-track.

"Me and my boys are running the Minkota Nationals next week," Sexton told the sold-out crowd after the race. "So, I wanted to come out here and shake the car down. It worked out perfect. Hopefully, it will be a shot in the arm for us back in the Midwest. It is great to see Santa Maria back open again. This place is awesome. Hopefully, we can keep doing it."

Dalton subbed for Grant in the CLS main but pulled off seconds after the start.

The win was Brent's second in a row and third of the 2022 campaign. He has not finished out of the top three in his last five races and the last time he finished worse than fourth was nearly five months ago when he placed eighth at the Bakersfield Speedway on March 25th.

Grant's second foray into the USAC/CRA Series saw him debut a flashy new graphics package on his #18. The teen qualified 15th fastest in the 31-car field. He missed the transfer in his heat race by two spots and was forced to contest the B main. That race would be 12-laps and the top six finishers would transfer to the A Main.

Grant got a good start in the B main and was attempting to make an outside pass for third in turn four on the first lap when he touched wheels with another car. Grant bicycled and his car was catapulted towards the outside wall. He gathered it back in but dropped back to the sixth and final transfer spot. A few laps later he went to the outside and attempted to pass the fifth place car on the back chute when the car slid up the racetrack and got into Grant who thumped the wall with his right rear wheel. However, the kid did not give up. He did not lose any spots and stayed in the final transfer position until turn one on the final lap. Track conditions in turns one and two had deteriorated badly and one of the ruts in the track caused Grant to spin and come to a stop. That also meant he missed the main event.

The 2nd Annual Minn-Kota Lightning Sprint Shootout will commence on Thursday night at Ada Minnesota's Norman County Speedway. One night later, the action switches to the River Cities Raceway in Grand Forks, North Dakota. On Saturday, it will be back to Minnesota for round #3 at Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush. The series will stay in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" for the finale at Buffalo River Speedway in Glyndon on Sunday night.

Last year Grant won the opener at Norman County and never finished worse than 8th in the four-race Minn-Kota Shootout. Dalton was fourth in the opener and never finished worse than 10th. Brent placed seventh in the two mains he started.
