dirtFan website

(Glendora, California, June 22, 2022) When lightning sprint car rookie Will Browne arrives at Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway this Saturday night, he will be prepared to be a very busy driver. In addition to driving his familiar "Win Now Racing" #8 in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series, the recent Glendora High School graduate will also be debuting in the WMR Midget Series in the Paul Sanders owned #22.

Browne, 18, who lives in Glendora, California, jumped into the lightning sprint car racing scene this year after winning the pro 500 speedway sprint championship last season at Wheel2Wheel Raceway in Victorville. Thus far, he has looked more like a seasoned veteran rather than a rookie in his new endeavor. The teen has finished in the top 10 in each of his eight main event starts. His only finish out of the top six was a ninth in the CLS season opener on March 25th at the Bakersfield Speedway. Four of his finishes have been in the top five including fourth-place results at the Merced Speedway on April 2nd and Bakersfield on the 14th of May. He has a fine 5.75 main event finishing percentage through his first eight lightning sprint races.

Browne's initial starts in a lightning car came in the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series at the Imperial Valley Raceway on March 5th and 6th. The raw rookie gave a great account of himself with a sixth-place finish on opening night. The next afternoon, under difficult daytime track conditions, he bettered his previous night's performance when he crossed under the checkered flag in fifth.

Since that time, all of Browne's racing has been with the 28-year-old California Lightning Sprint Car Series. In his last three races with the CLS he has a fourth, fifth and sixth. His fine performances have him heading into Ventura fifth in the CLS championship standings and in the lead for the Rookie Of The Year award. The next highest newcomer is eighth in the standings and 218 points behind Browne.

While this is Browne's inaugural season in lightning sprints, he is not new to racing. In 2017, he and his father and crew chief, Todd Browne, started racing dirt karts at Wheel2Wheel Raceway in Victorville. The next year he graduated to the restrictor sprint class and was named Rookie Of The Year. He hit the pavement and raced spec trucks at the Irwindale Speedway in 2020 in the Lucas Oil Race Truck Series. He adapted quickly to the pavement, finished second in points, and was named Rookie Of The Year. Last season he returned to the dirt and won the previously mentioned pro 500 speedway sprint championship at Wheel2Wheel last year.

While this piece was being put together, word came that Browne may only be racing in the WMR Midget portion of Saturday's program as there was a bearing going bad in the engine of his lightning sprint. Hopes are to get his car fixed or to find another ride for the CLS portion of the program.

If you would like to see the talented newcomer in action at Ventura on Saturday, spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m. and the first race will be at 5:30. Adult tickets are $18.00. For seniors 60 and over, military with ID, and students with an ID it is $15.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The Ventura Raceway is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The track website is http://venturaraceway.com/ and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE.
