- Barney Continues Fulton Dominance; Wins ESS Opener
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | The start of a new season brought a familiar face to victory lane Friday night at the Fulton Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints. Jason Barney picked up his first win of 2024 and fourth in his last five visits to the Oswego County oval after coming from his seventh starting position. Pinnacle pole winner Davie Franek and Chad Phelps led the field to the initial start, though the field quickly slowed for a caution for the #68 of Aaron Turkey, a victim of circumstance from hard racing deep in the pack. On the ensuing restart, Davie Franek quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead over Matt Tanner and Phelps. The field again slowed for a caution on lap 4, this time for Mike Bowman who found himself stopped facing the wrong way on the back stretch. By lap 7, defending tour champion Jordan Poirier had entered the mix and was able to take the lead. For the next handful of laps, Poirier continued to grow the distance between himself and second place. Jason Barney, who had moved into second on lap 8, began to close the gap between himself and Poirier on lap 11 when Poirier reached lap traffic. He was ultimately able to use lap traffic to take the lead as the field came to complete lap 19, and never looked back on his way to victory lane. "I was running out of time and running out of chances as the race went on," said Barney in victory lane. "Before that last restart I kind of found the middle, and I rolled by Jordan (Poirier) there. I knew he wasn't going to let that happen again. He went right to the middle and I just had to keep searching around." "He made it interesting, I wasn't sure what to do there, I could tell he wasn't sure to do either and I just stuck it down on the bottom and hoped that we didn't touch." Defending champion Jordan Poirier led a handful of laps early on, and was able to hold on for a second place finish. "My car was really, really good. I just took a safe lap around a lap car, and Jason slid under me there," said Poirier. "We struggle with these kind of conditions, so it feels good to have something to build on for the next few races for sure. Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was hometown favorite Larry Wight. "We were a little bit tight on the bottom, we just had to move around to find out what the car liked," said Wight. "I don't know, even if we had a caution, these guys were in clean air and setting a really good pace. We just needed the lap cars to fall my way a little better." 36 cars signed in to the pits for the 2024 season opener. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Danny Varin, Jordan Thomas, Jonathan Preston and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat race wins went to Matt Tanner, Davey Franek, Dylan Swiernik, and Kelly Hebing. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main was won by Mark Smith, and the Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Dirt Track Digest was won by Mike Bowman. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday May 24th at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY. - ESS Heads to Fulton for 2024 Season Opener
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | The Empire Super Sprints are hoping the second time is the charm this weekend with their second attempt at getting the 2024 season under way this Friday at the Fulton Speedway. With the originally scheduled lid-lifter at Outlaw Speedway cancelled two weeks ago due to wet weather and cold temperatures, all focus is now on Fulton Friday night for the annual 'High Bank Holdup' weekend. The full points opener will once again be the headliner of the Friday night portion of the two-day show, paying $2,000 to the winner. Last year, Jason Barney picked up his first of three Fulton Speedway wins in the 'High Bank Holdup' main event. Sammy Reakes IV was the winner in May at Fulton, Mother Nature was victorious in July for the CNY Speedweek event, and then Barney went on to round out the season with two more Fulton wins in September. As is usual at Fulton, a strong contingent of drivers is expected this Friday night. Last weeks open practice at the Oswego County oval saw no less than 11 sprint cars make laps in preparation for this Fridays event. DirtTrackDigest.com will present the Cobra Coaches dash on Friday night. For years, Dirt Track Digest has been a leader in local and national dirt racing coverage, with written, photo, and video content of modifieds, sprint cars and late models from around the country. A full schedule of events for this weekend's action, along with admission pricing can be found on the Fulton Speedway website, www.FultonSpeedway.com, along with on both the tracks and series social media pages. - WESTBROOK TAKES SPRING SIZZLER SOS VICTORY AT MERRITTVILLE
THOROLD, Ont. (April 20, 2024) - Cool temperatures and a stiff breeze did not deter a large crowd from attending the Spring Sizzler at Merrittville Speedway on Saturday night. Dylan Westbrook took the lead early in the 25 lap Southern Ontario Sprints A-Main and stayed there to claim his first win of the season. DJ Christie and Dylan Westbrook made up the front row for the A-Main, but miscommunication during the pace laps led to a melee which knocked several competitors out of the race before it began. The second attempt to start the race was smoother, and Westbrook quickly took command. Jason Barney put on a show by charging through the field with impressive dive-bomb maneuvers entering the third turn, and eventually made his way to the second position. Barney, a regular with the Empire Super Sprints series, gave Westbrook a challenge after a late restart but ended up settling for the runner-up spot. Ryan Turner also charged from deep in the field to finish third, while Christie took fourth and Mike Bowman rounded out the top five. Creative Edge Heat Race wins went to Christie, Westbrook, and Eric Gledhill. Westbrook also claimed the Ackland Insurance Quick Time Award, while Ryan Turner was The Drivers Project Hard Charger Award winner. A fast field of 23 cars competed in the opening round of the 2024 SOS season, including ESS regulars Jason Barney and Jordan Poirier. The next SOS event is scheduled for Saturday, June 15 at Southern Ontario Motor Speedway. - 2024 SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS SCHEDULE, PURSE INCREASES REVEALED
ST. MARYS, Ont. (April 3, 2024) - Southern Ontario Sprints officials are pleased to announce the 2024 series schedule, along with the championship points fund, and increased event purses. 2024 SCHEDULE The 27th SOS season will bring the series to five tracks; Merrittville Speedway, Southern Ontario Motor Speedway, Ohsweken Speedway, and Humberstone Speedway in Ontario, and Ransomville Speedway in New York. Merrittville will host four SOS events, including the season-opening Spring Sizzler on April 20, and the Gary Cunningham Memorial in June. Extra cash will again be on the line in the Cunningham Memorial, with lap sponsors and various other extras. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more details! Three visits to Southern Ontario Motor Speedway (South Buxton) are highlighted by a co-sanctioned event with the Great Lakes Super Sprints in July, and a Sprint Car doubleheaders with the Ontario Traditional Sprints series in June and September. The July SOMS event is preceded by two big Thunder on the Grand events at Ohsweken, while the SOS will again be a part of Northern Sprint Car Nationals weekend in September. The Southern Ontario Sprints, Great Lakes Super Sprints, Empire Super Sprints, and Ohsweken's 360 Sprint Car division are all involved as co-sanctions for the Ohsweken events. The lone trip across the border for the SOS will occur at Ransomville in August, and the trip will be a lucrative one with the purse being paid in US funds. Many drivers and teams from Western New York have supported the SOS series from day one, making the trip an opportunity to reminisce with old friends as well. The season is scheduled to conclude with a pair of events at Humberstone in October for another edition of The Fall Classic. 2024 PURSE INCREASES Thanks to the generosity of Nitro 54 Variety and Tammy Ten Media, the standard Southern Ontario Sprints race night purse is set for a significant boost. Each A-Main starter will earn at least $350, and the winner will earn at least $2,500. The Gary Cunningham Memorial at Merrittville will pay $3,000 to the winner, with other bonuses yet to be announced. Nitro 54 also has a hand in some big paydays at Ohsweken, including $20,000-to-win for the 20th running of the Northern Sprint Car Nationals. 2024 POINTS FUND The top ten finishers in the SOS championship standings will each earn a share of the $7,000 points fund thanks to Hoosier Tire Canada. The 2024 SOS champion will be awarded $1,100, while each top ten finisher will take home at least $500. Drivers must compete in at least 80% of the SOS schedule to be eligible. 2024 SCHEDULE - Nitro 54 Variety Southern Ontario Sprints presented by Tammy Ten Media (Subject to Change) Saturday, April 20 - Merrittville Speedway (Thorold, ON) - Spring Sizzler Saturday, June 15 - Southern Ontario Motor Speedway (Merlin, ON) - w/OTS Saturday, June 22 - Merrittville Speedway (Thorold, ON) - $3,000-to-win Gary Cunningham Memorial Thursday, July 11 - Ohsweken Speedway (Ohsweken, ON) - $5,000-to-win Thunder on the Grand Friday, July 12 - Ohsweken Speedway (Ohsweken, ON) - $10,000-to-win Thunder on the Grand Saturday, July 13 - Southern Ontario Motor Speedway (Merlin, ON) - w/GLSS Saturday, July 20 - Merrittville Speedway (Thorold, ON) Friday, August 16 - Ransomville Speedway (Ransomville, NY) Saturday, September 7 - Merrittville Speedway (Thorold, ON) Friday, September 13 - Ohsweken Speedway (Ohsweken, ON) Saturday, September 14 - Ohsweken Speedway (Ohsweken, ON) - $20,000-to-win Northern Sprint Car Nationals Saturday, September 28 - Southern Ontario Motor Speedway (Merlin, ON) - w/OTS Friday, October 4 - Humberstone Speedway (Port Colborne, ON) Saturday, October 5 - Humberstone Speedway (Port Colborne, ON About: The Southern Ontario Sprints series sanctioned its first race in 1996, making it one of Canada's longest-running motorsports sanctioning bodies.
