- NARC NEWSLINE - MAY 4, 2024
NARC NEWSLINE - May 4, 2024, By Jim Allen … I'm sure we all agree when I say it's been a rough start to the 2024 season. Not just with the NARC schedule, but with just about every dirt track north of the grapevine in California. Mother Nature came bouncing out of her corner like a heavyweight champ with something to prove and pummeled motorsports into submission with wet weather. If the current trend continues, on a prorated basis, NARC would feature a whopping eight races in 2024. The worse thing about it is the weather has typically been perfect all week long, getting everybody excited, before bad weather rolls in on Friday and Saturdays. And not to leave the rest of the country out of the loop, the Outlaws and High Limit also know how to quickly find their rain gear. Because of the choppiness of the schedule, few in open wheel racing have been able to establish any real kind of "weekly" routine, making the natives restless and much of social media poison with the alleged expert opinions of the week. One driver and team that does have their act together this season is Cole Macedo and the Tarlton Motorsports team. Two-fer-two! They survived the unpredictable Battle Royale at Chico and mastered the newly remodeled Stockton Dirt Track before anybody else could. The Tarlton-team, with Drew Werner on the wrenches, is looking for their first NARC title since 2016. By the way, both NARC races had a "Road House" feel to them as only 10 of 24 starters finished at Chico, and 13 at Stockton. Silver Dollar Speedway was described as 1990's "old-school" rough, leaving aspiring drivers born in this century to struggle and figure it out. As luck would have it, Floracing capitalized on the Chico carnage for its ever-popular weekly crash highlight video … just from that one show. Man, that's an ego killer! But like clockwork, history always repeats itself. There's always a couple of events each year that look absolutely perfect on paper and then have you yelling at the steering wheel on the way home. The good news, those two are now behind us (fingers-crossed.) So with that, the NARC schedule has endured the the cancelation of the Dave Helm Memorial (3/9) and Peter Murphy Classic (4/13) in Hanford, the March Madness event at Merced (3/23), a postponement of the April 27th race at Stockton, and the postponement (yes, postponement) of today's Tulare's Chris & Brian Faria Memorial. So if you are keeping score, it's Mother Nature - 5, Cole Macedo and NARC - 2. Speaking of Stockton, everybody got their first glimpse on April 6th when the former 4/10's mile oval transitioned into a quarter-mile D-shaped bullring. As expected, the opinions were brutal despite the fact that it took a mad scramble to make the race happen in the first place. It also rained for two straight days leading up to the race and that didn't help the cause. It took a while to get the "new" Dirt Track raceable and the NARC heats didn't push off until 8:00 p.m. and the main at 11:13 p.m. (Our goal is to be done by 9:30 p.m.) Also in the pits was SCCT and they had their issues as well, including a longer than normal main event. When you added it all up, the NARC feature was called 27-laps complete at the stroke of midnight. For all of the conspiracy addicts out there, the drivers were informed by radio during the previous caution period that the scheduled 30-lapper was going to be considered complete at midnight no matter what happened. It "happened" with a multi-car crash and wasn't the way anybody wanted to end a chilly night. As Colt's Hall of Fame football coach Tony Dungy says in his book, "nothing good happens after midnight." Especially in Stockton! When all was said and done, the overall opinion of drivers and teams leaned more positive than negative and suggested improvements to make it even better. That's great news as promoter Tony Noceti is committed to the further evolution and improvement of the facility. After the show, he committed to building wider turns with more banking and a backstretch wall from turn two to four. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a ton of work and the weather didn't cooperate (try to act surprised) to allow those upgrades to be completed before our scheduled April 27th race. This postponed the event to a highly-anticipated Sunday Twilight Show on May 19th, the day after the NARC sprint cars invade Thunderbowl Raceway. (Twilight = Qualifying at 4:00 p.m.) That beats the tarnation out of another cancellation. We really need fans and teams to support this show as it could start a new trend and give race promoters another viable option. Other observers thought the Stockton postponement was the perfect opportunity for Peter Murphy to maneuver his April 13th rainout, better known as the Peter Murphy Classic, back into the schedule. However, Murphy already had a weekly show booked on that date. A few racing peeps wanted NARC to invade Kings Speedway which wasn't going to happen because the Central California locals barely have enough opportunities to race already. Not to mention, the PMC, an event filled with auctions, pageantry, and a pole shuffle, features a $50,000+ purse and needs avid fan support to support that obligation. When you figure in liability insurance, water, lights, marketing, track prep, security, garbage, officials and the like, the total expenses are closer to $70,000. And I'm being conservative. While many open wheel loyalists would attend a 7:00 a.m. Christmas morning sprint car show on short notice, the average fan which makes up 65% of any crowd would be home unwrapping gifts. In hindsight, the April 27th Kings crowd was average at best meaning a high-dollar PMC would have been a financial blood bath. It was the right call. With that being said, there is no official date for rescheduling the 10th anniversary of the PMC. Murphy has run the gauntlet to squeeze it in somewhere, but others barked back about conflicts. It appears that California promoters are battling for the same 1500 core fans. Let's hope we can figure this thing out. CALISTOGA SPEEDWAY: Some fans may have had unrealistic expectations that a race schedule would be released soon after the City of Calistoga and Napa County worked out their differences and finalized the sale of the fairgrounds. In reality that was just the starting point and best-case scenario, nobody will see a schedule until 2025. Tommy Hunt said way back in February that it would take his HMC Promotions team about six-months to promote and orchestrate the activities that surround the awesome two-day Louie Vermeil Classic weekend. Once racing is officially on the agenda, expectations will be at a Mount Everest-level as local politicians have the place under a microscope to make sure they made the right choice. That means an infield pit area packed with sprint cars, an overflowing grandstand, a Gold Cup type of feel, and race fans spending their money downtown. Otherwise, all of the pot-banging we did to get the historic half-mile reopened would have been for naught. All those who agree, say YAH! By the way, Tommy Hunt is undergoing serious health issues these days, and we wish him a speedy recovery. NARC NOTES: There are about 15 laps remaining to be sponsored for the June 1st Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial race in Placerville. Contact Karen Bradway-Tuccelli on Facebook if you are interested in sponsoring a lap in the 40-lap feature or 12-lap semi. … An entire nation gasped (on Floracing) when Ryan Robinson clipped the tractor tire coming out of turn two and flipped violently while leading at Silver Dollar Speedway at the Mini-Gold Cup NARC opener. While everybody, including wife Kylie, was attempting to comprehend what had just happened, Ryan had already managed to climb out of the Antaya Motorsports #16A and was stepping slowly to the pit area. His movements were purely instinctual as his eyes saw nothing but black after suffering his fifth racing-related concussion. Luckily, the safety crews caught up with him shortly thereafter. Ryan made an announcement a couple of days later that he is retiring from racing. You know it was a tough decision, but it was the right one. He knows that you can only scramble the eggs so many times. Never forget that this is a dangerous sport. … Willie Croft will be battling for the Skagit Speedway championship in Washington this year with "Rudeen" backing on his number 29 sprint car. He will be attempting to dethrone the defending champ, Trey Starks. … … Only six drivers have finished in the top ten in both races. Can you name them? How about … obviously Cole Macedo … Tanner Carrick, Bud Kaeding, Nick Parker, and rookies Gauge Garcia and Cadeen Steele. Carrick may be the most underrated driver in California with a sixth and third place finish in NARC competition, as well as two Ocean 360 wins to his credit. He is overdue to post his first NARC career victory. … Dominic Scelzi is back in California. He was planning to miss the first six NARC shows of the season while he was chasing races around the Midwest with the Outlaws and High Limit. As it turns out, he only missed two. He will be a "wild card" the rest of the season, attempting to steal victories as others chase the championship. … All, like in every single one of our events are on Floracing.com … David Castenada reports that work is underway at Santa Maria Speedway. After sitting dormant for a couple of years, the track needs serious love to make it race ready. Tony Pombo, who signed a lease-agreement for the place, is actively involved in the process. NARC invades Santa Maria on July 27th - right about the time temperatures hit 110 degrees in the Central Valley. … Justyn Cox cracked three ribs at the Chico opener. You know it was bad when he couldn't golf! ... … The new NARC 65th Anniversary Coloring Book is hot off the press. Thank you to Creative Finishes Plus and Andy & Candace Forsberg for sponsoring this project. Also, thanks to my wife Carol who did all of the artwork. We will pass them out to kids at upcoming events. … Which reminds me of a quick story from the last time we had a NARC coloring book in 2019. While handing them out to excited kids in Tulare, one impatient attractive woman (40ish) insisted on getting one for herself. I politely told her it's kids first, since we need to keep them engaged so their parents continue to bring them to the races. I said if there are any left, I would hook her up. A minute or two later, she impatiently works her way back in line and offers to flip up her shirt and show me the goods if I give her one. Excuse me, did I hear that right? Now I'm not going to say what actually happened at that point, but she walked away with crayons also. … THE ROAD TO THE DIRT CUP: It's hard to believe the Fastest Five Days in Motorsports are only about 40-days away. Based on phone calls, emails, and DM, there is going to be a large contingent of fans making this stellar road trip. It's going to be a parade going up Interstate 5. If you haven't locked down your tickets yet, each track's website is ready to serve them up. By the way, the five FFDM shows pay $5,000 to win and $600 to start the A. The Northwest Focus Midgets will be the support division for the first four events. They put on a great show. From the FFDM Father's Day finale at Grays Harbor Raceway, we continue North to the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup. That group is busy putting together fan engagement activities for this showcase event. I'm spearheading the Super Dirt Cup Charity Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 19th - the day BEFORE the three-days of racing kicks off. We are looking to accomplish two things … build on the "Club" in Northern Auto Racing Club by having an enjoyable day at the nearby Avalon Golf Links. And two, raise money for the NARC Benevolent Fund and the Rayce Rudeen Foundation. Please join us, no matter what your skill level. Off the record, this may become more of a drinking event than a birdie event. (#justsaying) Sign-ups are only $100 and that include golf, cart, box lunch, gift bag and a chance to claim a bunch of prizes and awards. Here is the only caveat: You have to sign-up and pay before June 5th. … We are also looking for hole sponsors. Call me! … Who is your pick to walk away with a $62,000 payday at this year's Super Dirt Cup? And the hot news of the moment ... We have rescheduled the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial for October 12th at Tulare, which is the weekend before the Trophy Cup. It is now part of a great show that also includes the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. It's shaping up to be a terrific October. With that, prepare to get busy because there are 13 NARC shows scheduled in the next 50 or so days. It's going to flash by in the blink of an eye so get your travel plans dialed in. Coming to you live from Auburn, CA! May the Fourth be with you. See ya!
- CRASH KNOCKS BRADEN CHIARAMONTE OUT OF USAC/CRA RACE AT PERRIS
(El Cajon, CA, May 1) Driving a brand new car, Braden Chiaramonte was working his way towards the front in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA 30-lap main event last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway. However, a tangle that involved some lapped cars gathered him in and knocked him out of the race with nine laps to go. Sadly, what could have been a top-five finish ended up being a 20th. After a practice session at the track the week before, Chiaramonte was debuting his new DRC Chassis along with a 410 engine obtained from Arizona native Sterling Cling who now does most of his racing in the Midwest. Of the 22 cars on hand on Saturday, Chiaramonte ended up 13th fastest in qualifying with a time of 17.031. That was his second-fastest lap in 2024 at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. It was only surpassed by his 16.995 on March 16th. Chiaramonte, in his pretty #73B, started on the outside of the front row in the first 10 lap heat race. When the checkers ended the preliminary, he ended up fourth. That Kept him in contention for one of the invert spots to start in the first three rows of the main event. Unfortunately, after the second and third heat races, he was out of the invert and was forced to start the 30-lapper in 13th. In the main, like always, Chiaramonte was moving forward. He was picking off cars and confidently made his way into the top 10. At the halfway point, the talented young driver was up to eighth and seemed headed for the top five. However, coming off turn four on the 22nd circuit, he got caught up in someone else's mess and was done for the night with a 20th place finish. Despite other racing duties that saw the El Cajon, California resident miss the two USAC/CRA races in Arizona, Chiaramonte is still 21st in the championship standings and he is third in the Rookie of the Year chase. Chiaramonte is taking this weekend off to watch his older brother Bronsen race in the "Weedle Industries Perfect 10 Challenge" desert race in Johnson City, California. Next weekend he will be back in action in his winged 360 sprint car at a pair of races on two of the crown jewel tracks in Northern California. On Friday the 10th, he will be at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Twenty-four hours later and 120 miles south, he will compete on the banked, 58-year-old Placerville Speedway. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. RTL Traffic Control, AM Ortega, OCC Motorsports, Hyper Racing, Chop Design, Adams Motors, Hacienda Casa Blanca Fine Mexican Dining, Evil Plus Injection, King Racing Products, Tyner, and Keizer Wheels. - CHIARAMONTE'S SPEED IMPRESSIVE AT MERCED - DEBUTS NEW CAR AT PERRIS ON SATURDAY
(El Cajon, CA, April 24) Always busy Braden Chiaramonte made the trek to the lightning-quick Merced Speedway last Saturday night for round #2 of the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. The teen impressed his fellow competitors and fans by winning his heat, placing second in the dash, and running second early on in the main. Back in the Tiner/Hirst Enterprises Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition/#94TH, Chiaramonte was the sixth fastest qualifier of 18 cars in Group B. The time placed the El Cajon, California resident on the outside of the front row in his 10-lap heat race. After a spirited battle early on, Chiaramonte scored a runaway victory for his first SCCT heat race win of the year. The young driver's prowess in the heat sent him to the six-lap dash. Things kept going the way of the driver known as "Spare Change" when he pulled the #1 spot. For fans unfamiliar with Chiaramonte who may have thought his heat race victory was a fluke, they were convinced he was the real deal after the dash. Starting on the outside of the front row against a field that included several veteran stars who had a lot more experience on the track than himself, he fought tooth and nail throughout the race. Running second, he was passed by one of Nor Cal's biggest stars. Not to be deterred, Chiaramonte awed the crowd when he ducked back underneath the driver one lap later, made the pass, and pulled away to sew up the outside front row starting spot for the 30 lap main. Chiaramonte flexed his muscles early on in the finale. Coming off turn two on the opening lap, a pair of drivers aggressively dove to the inside of the teen sensation. However, running the high line where he was so fast all night long, he easily beat them to turn three. He then set his sights on the leader and began to reel him in. At the end of the fourth circuit, he was 0.472 behind the race's front runner. By the time a yellow flag slowed the action five laps later, he had shaved the leader's advantage to 0.453. As soon as the race resumed, Chiaramonte continued to rip the top and was close behind the leader. However, coming off turn two on lap 11, he slid off the top of the track bringing out a yellow flag. Chiaramonte went to the work area where the Tiner/Hirst crew quickly changed the left rear tire and sent him back onto the battleground. For the restart, Chiaramonte was at the back in 23rd. However, he was not there for long. He immediately began picking off the competition and was all the way back up to 15th when the checkered flag brought the proceedings to a conclusion. It was not the outcome the young driver wanted, but his overall performance drew wide praise on social media after the race. "Second race of the year in the #360 SCCT," Chiaramonte reported to his Facebook fans. "Went out late in qualifying and the track was really slick but still went sixth quick. Started second in the heat and finished first. Pulled the #1 for the dash and finished second. I started second in the main, was running down the leader and made a mistake which cost me a good finish. Overall it was a good night. We have tons of speed, just need to put it all together. Thanks to everyone who helps." Heading into the third round of the SCCT season at Marysville on May 25th, Chiaramonte is 13th in the championship standings. Twenty-four hours earlier and 88 miles south of Merced, Chiaramonte ran his 600cc non wing Micro in the Jet Bowl Classic at the Lemoore Jet Bowl. In his first micro race of the year, the 17-year-old out qualified the 27 car field with a lap of 11.627. He followed that up by starting fourth and finishing second in his heat race. For the 30-lap main, he started sixth and slipped back to ninth. He then charged all the way up to second and was seventh when the checkered flag flew. . The Saturday, April 27th, Chiaramonte will return to Perris Auto Speedway for the first time since his March 16th crash on the famous Riverside County oval. That crash destroyed his car so he will be driving a brand new DRC Chassis with a powerful 410 engine purchased from Midwest racer Sterling Cling. At the February opener on the same track, he finished eighth. Spectator gates at Perris will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available at the ticket window. The track is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - Tribute to Al Hinds invades Placerville Speedway Saturday
Placerville, CA…After raining out a couple weeks ago, the rescheduled Tribute to Al Hinds is set to open the Thompson's Winged 360 Sprint Car season with a $2,500-to-win feature this Saturday at Placerville Speedway. Fellow divisions ready to tackle the quarter mile at the event include the Mountain Democrat Ltd. Late Models, Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks and the visiting Nor-Cal Dwarf Car Association. The Tribute to Al Hinds began in 2004 following the passing of early track promoter and mentor, Al Hinds, a longtime Placerville resident and true race fan that touched the lives of many. Hinds was the second promoter of Placerville Speedway. He took operation of the track with business partner Richard Hirst from its founder, Bruno Romani, in 1968, three years after it first opened when the facility was built around an existing community football field. The operator of a local machine shop by trade, Hinds loved the community where he lived. In his final years of life, he enjoyed sitting with some of his best friends every night in the grandstands at Placerville Speedway and loved watching young talent make a name for themselves in the sport. Former track announcer and publicist Bill Sullivan said of Hinds, "From the day he set foot on the red clay at Placerville Speedway to the very last race he attended, Al Hinds continued to display his true love for auto racing and the community. Even in his final years he continued to help young drivers, entertain fans and most importantly he spent a great deal of time talking to and mentoring those that helped in speedway operations. When Hinds spoke, anyone who cared remotely about the future of the sport would sit down and listen." The inaugural Tribute to Al Hinds was captured by Roger Crockett, while last season saw Andy Forsberg claim his third triumph in the event. It was a special night for the nine-time Placerville Speedway titlist, as it marked his milestone 200th career victory. Dan Brown Jr. opened the Mountain Democrat Ltd. Late Model season in victorious fashion last Saturday, while Nick Baldwin captured the win with the Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks. - Justin Sanders goes back-to-back with the SCCT 360s
Merced, CA…Aromas driver Justin Sanders raced to his 10th career Sprint Car Challenge Tour victory on Saturday at Merced Speedway, moving into sole possession of second all-time. "I want to thank Dale and Tara Miller for all the support and giving me a great opportunity to drive this race car," Sanders said in victory lane. "We've had a strong start to the season and hopefully we can keep it up as the week's go on." Sanders jumped into the lead at the waving of the green flag and had his way with things out front. Early on things were exciting as cars ran high and low on the quarter mile bullring. Heavy daytime winds created a drying surface however, as rubber became prevalent towards the later stages. Sanders ultimately led flag to flag in the 35-lap contest to bring home victory over Fremont's Shane Golobic, Penngrove's Chase Johnson, Clovis' Dominic Gorden and Mesa, Arizona's Corbin Rueschenberg. Kaleb Montgomery, Ashton Torgerson, Isaiah Vasquez, DJ Netto and Tony Gomes rounded out the top-10. Netto earned the Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Award with his drive from 17th to ninth. Next up for the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour is the Mel & Marlyn Hall Memorial at Marysville Raceway on Saturday May 25th. - High Banks of Merced Speedway ready for SCCT Saturday
Merced, CA…Merced Speedway has rapidly become one of the more popular tracks in the Golden State and this Saturday the Sprint Car Challenge Tour ventures to its high banks for a can't miss night of racing. The Merced bullring happens to be one of the more centrally located tracks in California, which should make for a solid field of cars from throughout the Northern and Central part of our state. The always action-packed quarter mile lies one hour and 45 minutes from Sacramento and just under an hour from Fresno. "We are excited to host the Sprint Car Challenge Tour at Merced Speedway this Saturday," commented track GM Doug Lockwood. "We don't have that many Sprint Car shows in Merced, but when we do, it's always a special time. It should be an outstanding field of competitors this weekend and it's your only chance to catch a Winged Sprint Car event here until the Outlaws in September, so hopefully everyone can come out and fill these grandstands." All cars that competed at the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour opener on April 6th will be vying for $3,000-to-win this Saturday in Merced, thanks to the www.shopkylelarson.com bonus up for grabs. The 24-car feature, as always, pays a guaranteed $400-to-start. Justin Sanders and owner Dale Miller picked up where they left off last year by recording a clean sweep at the SCCT opener in Stockton. The Aromas driver recorded his ninth career tour win, tying him with Fresno's Dominic Scelzi for the second most all-time. Sanders ran fourth at the Merced stop last season, while Scelzi raced to victory at the event, marking the first of his three SCCT triumphs in 2023. Both drivers will be tough to beat on Saturday but will be challenged by several of California's top racers. Fremont's Shane Golobic, Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Oregon driver Tyler Thompson rounded out the top-five on opening night with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour recently. Other drivers among the top-10 on April 6th looking to move their way forward will include Chase Johnson, rookie driver Austin Wood, 2021 Merced Speedway winner Colby Copeland, Dustin Freitas and Mariah Ede. Freitas netted the PitStopUSA Hard Charger Award with his drive from 20th to ninth in Stockton. Tickets and Details: Adult tickets at Merced Speedway this Saturday April 20th cost just $25, juniors 11-17 will be $10, kids 6-10 are $5 and those five and under will be free. Tickets will be available at the gate on race day. The pit gate will open at 3pm, with the front gate opening at 5pm and pit meeting at 5:15pm. Hot laps will occur at 5:45pm, with Sierra Foothills Wine Services qualifying and racing to follow. The muffler rule will mirror what was utilized at the Stockton opener, which is Flowmaster, SpinTech, Schoenfeld 14272735-78 or Extreme mufflers. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE'S RESULTS FROM THE ASPARAGUS CUP AT STOCKTON AND UPCOMING EVENTS
(El Cajon, CA, April 11) Rising Southern California star Braden Chiaramonte made the long trek north for last week's Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour "Asparagus Cup" at the newly configured Stockton Dirt Track. The young driver transferred directly from his heat race into the main event and finished 14th after having to restart at the back early in the going. Located east of San Francisco on the San Joaquin Fairgrounds, it was the first race on the track that was reconfigured from a half-mile to a quarter mile over the off-season. For Chiaramonte, who never raced on the half-mile, it was not his first race on the fairgrounds that is located 471 miles from his El Cajon, California home. Last June, he competed in a two-night Outlaw Micro 600 race at the Delta Speedway which is on the fairgrounds and only a few hundred feet from the dirt track. His best finish of the two nights was a fifth on June 22nd. Last week, the new track surface did present some challenges for the teams on hand starting with qualifying. Driving the well-known Tiner/Hirst Enterprises #94TH that is sponsored by Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition, Chiaramonte timed in 11th fastest of the 16 cars in group B qualifying with a time of 14.809. Chiaramonte's first race of the night was the third heat. Eight cars lined up for the 10-lapper and only the top five would get an automatic ticket into the night's 30-lap main event. All he had to do was move up one spot to get a transfer to the main. That is exactly what he did but it was not without working hard as he was battling for position a majority of the race. By the time the finale rolled around, some portions of the track were taking on a lot of character. Especially turns three and four. Chiaramonte started 18th in the 24-car, 30 lapper, and nearly got bitten early in the race. A Talladega-style tangle in turn four that involved seven cars nearly blocked the entire track. It almost gathered Chiaramonte in. However, he alertly dove to the inside to narrowly escape the carnage that brought out a red flag. For the restart after the "Big One," Chiaramonte was 10th. However, on lap six two cars got together directly in front of the young star. With nowhere to go, he slid into them pushing the right-side nerf bar into the rear tire. That resulted in a trip to the work area where the Tiner/Hirst crew quickly straightened out the damage and sent him back out to battle. Starting at the back, Chiaramonte worked his way forward and at one point was up to 12th. When the checkered signaled an end to the rough and tumble affair, the young driver came home with a hard-fought 14th-place finish. "First wing race of the year is in the books and it was not a bad night," Chiaramonte told his Facebook followers a few days after the race. "Didn't qualify to good. Started sixth in the heat and finished fifth. Started 18th in the main and got up to 10th and two cars got together in front of me. Slid into them and the nerf bar was in the right rear tire. Got to the pits and they pulled it off. I went back and finished 14th. It was a good first night. I learned a lot and am ready for the next one." That next one was supposed to be at the Placerville Speedway on April 13th. However, like so many races in California early in the 2024 season, rain wiped that show out. This week Chiaramonte and the team will head north to Kevin Lockwood's racy Merced Speedway for the next round of the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. In addition, the team is contemplating taking the micro along to race at the Delta Speedway in Stockton, which is 70-miles north of Merced, on Friday night. Spectator gates at Merced will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first green flag will fly at 7:00. The track is located at 900 Martin Luther King Drive in Merced, California. The website is http://www.mercedspeedway.net/ and the office phone number is (209) 383-7799. If things have not been busy enough, the team just rolled out its brand new DRC chassis to race with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Series. They finished building the car on Saturday and tested it Sunday morning at Perris Auto Speedway. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - Tribute to Al Hinds initiates Placerville Speedway season on Saturday
Placerville, CA…Placerville Speedway is prepared to open its 59th season of action on Saturday by honoring a man that had a key role in making it all possible, with the 21st annual "Tribute to Al Hinds" taking to the red clay. Divisions set to usher in the championship season will include the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Cars, the Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks, the Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks and the High Sierra Industries Wingless Spec Sprints. Saturday's Winged Sprint Car main event will also hand out $2,000 to the winner. The inaugural Tribute to Al Hinds was captured by Roger Crockett, while last season saw Andy Forsberg claim his third triumph in the event. It was a special night for the nine-time Placerville Speedway titlist, as it marked his milestone 200th career victory. Track champions last season with the Thompson's Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks and Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks included Hanford's Michael Faccinto, Oakley's Nick Baldwin and Placerville's Mike Miller respectively. The High Sierra Industries Wingless Sprints make their first of four visits to the Placerville bullring on Saturday. They'll return for additional outings on Thompson's Fan Appreciation Night in June and both nights of the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout over Labor Day weekend. Tickets and Details: Grandstand seating is general admission this Saturday April 13th, except for the reserved seats marked for season ticket holders. Adult tickets cost $18, while seniors 62+, military and juniors 12-17 will be $16. Kids 6-11 cost $8 and those five and under are free. Purchase tickets online at https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr-041324 or at the gate on race day. Pit passes can be purchased at the pit gate or via the Pit Pay App to take advantage of the expanded seating area on the hill. The pit gate will open at noon, with the front gate opening at 3pm. Happy Hour is offered when the gates open until 6pm in the grandstands featuring live music along with discounted Coors Light and Coors Original at the beer booth. The pit meeting will be held at 4:45pm with cars on track at 5:15. Hot laps, ADCO Driveline qualifying and racing will follow. - Justin Sanders Clean Sweeps the Sprint Car Challenge Tour Opener With Dale Miller Motorsports
Back in November, Dale Miller Motorsports and Justin Sanders closed out the Sprint Car Challenge Tour season in victory lane at Stockton Dirt Track. Fast forward to Saturday night, and the duo returned to a reconfigured Stockton Dirt Track to open the SCCT season and didn't skip a beat as Sanders clean swept the night.
- Justin Sanders records clean sweep to open SCCT season in Stockton
Stockton, CA…Aromas driver Justin Sanders put together a perfect outing to snag the Sprint Car Challenge Tour season opener on Saturday at the Stockton Dirt Track's Asparagus Cup. Piloting the Dale Miller Septic No. 4sa Sanders earned the Sierra Foothills Wine Services Fast Time Award, won his heat race, captured the High Sierra Industries Dash, and raced to victory in the 30-lap SCCT finale. "It feels good to get another win here at Stockton for Dale Miller and to be the first winner on the new track is special as well," Sanders commented following the race. "I have to thank everybody that supports this 4sa car and hopefully we can go to victory lane a lot this season." Once in front after the opening circuit Sanders had his way with things during the main event, working lapped traffic like a magician at times. Several slowdowns plagued the contest, but the reigning winner of the Dirt Cup was calm, cool and collected in the lead. Fremont's Shane Golobic found speed late and moved into the second spot with just a couple of laps left. Sanders had already pulled away however and took the checkered flag for his ninth career triumph with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour, tying Dominic Scelzi for second all-time. Golobic crossed the stripe in second, followed by Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Oregon racer Tyler Thompson. The remainder of the top-10 was filled out by Chase Johnson, Austin Wood, Colby Copeland, Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Dustin Freitas and Mariah Ede. The night's Bmain was picked off by Isaiah Vasquez, while the Dash as noted went to Justin Sanders. Heat race wins went to Sanders, Bloomfield, Thompson and Colby Johnson. Sanders set the standard in qualifying with a lap of 14.225. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour returns to action on Saturday April 20th at the Merced Speedway. - Justin Sanders records clean sweep to open SCCT season in Stockton
Aromas driver Justin Sanders put together a perfect outing to snag the Sprint Car Challenge Tour season opener on Saturday at the Stockton Dirt Track's Asparagus Cup.
- BRADEN CHIARAMONTE RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY AT STOCKTON - LEAVES FOR TEXAS ON SUNDAY
(El Cajon, CA, April 4, 2024) After a couple of weeks off, things are about to get busy for teen racing star Braden Chiaramonte. This Saturday he heads north for the opening round of the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Series at the Asparagus Cup on the recently renovated Stockton Dirt Track. Sunday morning he plans to catch a flight back to So Cal and then drive straight to Texas for Monday's practice for the Third Annual TMS Micro Mania KKM Motorsports Challenge at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway. However, potential rainy weather in the "Lone Star State" may force postponement of the important outlaw micro race. If the schedule sounds busy, it was even busier until Thursday afternoon. Chiaramonte had planned on racing with the winged 360 sprint cars at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night. However, the famous track was pummeled by rain on Thursday. Mother Nature's tear drops left the facility completely saturated. Combined with a sunless forecast and cold temperatures, there was no chance to get the facility dried out for Friday night and promoters were forced to pull the plug. Last week's rainout at Placerville means Saturday's race at Stockton will be the first of the year for the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. It will also be the first appearance at Stockton for Chiaramonte. While it will be his initial time at the facility, he will be on level footing with all of the other drivers as the track underwent a major renovation over the winter. Formerly a 4/10 of a mile track, the size has been reduced to a quarter mile with 9-degree banking in the turns. The reduction in size should make the racing much tighter and thus, more exciting for the fans. In addition, the racing surface has been brought closer to the grandstands giving spectators a much better view of the action. The plan as of now is for Chiaramonte to fly home early Sunday morning after Stockton. The team will then head out with their car for the Micro Mania in Texas. Practice is scheduled for Monday with preliminaries taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The finals are slated for Thursday. However, predictions of possible thunderstorms and rain starting late Monday afternoon and lasting until the early morning hours of Thursday are putting the event in jeopardy. A decision should be made on Friday on whether the race will take place next week or be moved to a date later in the year. Last season Chiaramonte shined at the Micro Mania race that is sanctioned by POWRi. Held in September, he dominated opening night by scoring a clean sweep being fastest in time trials, winning his heat, qualifier, and the main event. Going into the finale 24 hours later, he was the highest point driver of the 86 competitors on hand. That put him in the King of Texas Trophy Pool Shootout. The personable racer kept his perfect batting average intact when he started the night off by winning that short race to earn the right to start on the pole for the main. Chiaramonte led the first six laps before slipping to second. From there he hounded the eventual winner all the way to the checkered flag. Thus, in six events (including qualifying) over the two days, he had five wins and a single second place. On Saturday in Stockton, the gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and racing will begin at 6:00. Tickets for those aged 18-64 are $30.00. It is $25.00 for those from 5-17, seniors and military with i.d. It is free for kids 4 and under, and parking is free, too. The track is located on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds at 1658 S. Airport Way in Stockton. The track's website is StocktonDirtTrack.com and the office phone is (916) 370-9417. For full details on next week's Micro Mania, please visit the event website at https://www.texasmotorspeedway.com/events/micro-mania/. Good news from the Chiaramonte team is the fact that it has purchased a 410 engine from Sterling Cling Racing. The bullet, which should arrive on Friday, replaces the one that was damaged in the crash at Perris Auto Speedway on March 16th. The engine will be installed and ready when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series races at Perris on April 27th. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. RTL Traffic Control, AM Ortega, Hyper Racing, Chop Design, Adams Motors, Hacienda Casa Blanca Fine Mexican Dining, Evil Plus Injection, King Racing Products, Tyner, and Keizer Wheels. - NARC SPRINT CARS SET TO TACKLE ASPARAGUS CUP AT NEWLY CONFIGURED STOCKTON DIRT TRACK
(4/1/24 - Ben Deatherage) Stockton, CA ... The wait will soon be over as the highly anticipated reshaped Stockton Dirt Track is set to host the 900+ horsepower speed machines of the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series. The Saturday, April 6th show will feature the West Coast top teams as they negotiate a new ¼-mile clay oval at the 2024 Asparagus Cup. "Sprint car teams have been asking for a reconfiguration of our track to promote even better open-wheel racing," explained promoter Tony Noceti. "We worked hard over the winter to meet that demand, and I'm proud of what we have created at the Stockton Dirt Track. Race fans are going to be treated to an exciting bullring of sprint car racing action on our new quarter-mile oval." With the newly configured track, all of the traveling teams will have to start from scratch, negating years of research and volumes of track notes on car set-ups. That makes the Asparagus Cup a wide-open affair with no team having a distinct advantage. This marks the second round of the Northern Auto Racing Club's 65th-anniversary series, that has already experienced two rainouts this Spring. The companion division for the evening is the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360 Sprints. Who to Watch Colby Copeland will make his 2024 debut with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series on Saturday, driving the Larry Antaya-owned #16A entry. Copeland, from Roseville, is the defending winner of the Asparagus Cup, claiming top honors in April of 2022. The 2023 event was rained out. "I know there's a little different shape of a track, but we are hoping to get dialed in be at the front," commented Copeland, who hopes to continue the Asparagus Cup success. "It should be interesting, but the thing is that everyone will start on the same track and no one will have an advantage on anyone else. "It would be good to win again. The #16A car was fast at the Mini Gold Cup with (Ryan) Robinson and should be fast at Stockton." 2019 NARC champion D.J. Netto has visited the trademark winner's circle twice at Stockton in NARC action. Both were Salute to LeRoy Van Conett events, and his most recent Stockton victory was in July of 2022. Cole Macedo is the lone winner on the current NARC circuit, having earned $10,000 at Silver Dollar Speedway's Mini Gold Cup. The Lemoore driver, aboard the famed Tarlton Motorsports #21, is looking to capture his first Stockton victory. His best 410 finish was a 14th-place effort in November 2018 at the Tribute to Gary Patterson. Justin Sanders is no slouch at Stockton, as he had an incredible performance at the 2022 Tribute to GP to close out the NARC season with a victory. Behind the wheel of the Mittry Motorsports #2X, the Aromas driver is looking to open up his 2024 winning account on Saturday night. Other NARC 410 Series regulars competing for a NARC victory include the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X driven by Clarksburg driver Justyn Cox, 2017 series champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Oakley pilot Dylan Bloomfield in the Vertullo #83V, Billy Aton from Benicia, Penngrove's Chase Johnson, Chico's Nick Parker, Jarrett Soares of Gilroy and many more. This includes the sizable NARC rookie class of 2024, which includes Easton's Caeden Steele, Gauge Garcia of Lemoore, Dominic Gorden from Clovis, and Chico native Michael Ing. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE PLANS TO RETURN TO ACTION MARCH 30TH AT PLACERVILLE
(El Cajon, CA, March 21, 2024) After escaping serious injury in a nasty crash during last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race at Perris Auto Speedway, Braden Chiaramonte hopes to be back in action when the Sprint Car Challenge Tour kicks off its 2024 season in the 8th Annual Sprint Frenzy at the Placerville Speedway on March 30th. Coming off an impressive win during the California Mid-Winter Fair at the Imperial Valley Raceway the previous week, the 17-year-old racer was hoping for another good run at Perris on Saturday night. Three weeks earlier he started 16th in the USAC/CRA main event at Perris and finished eighth. That had him eighth in points and second in the Rookie of the Year chase going into last Saturday's race. Chiaramonte qualified at 16.995 on the lightning-quick surface. That sent him to the second 10-lap heat race. The El Cajon, California driver turned his fastest lap of the heat on lap six. A lap and a half later, disaster struck. Contact with another car on the backstretch sent him into a long series of frightening flips. The young driver climbed out of the car and the track safety crew placed him in the ambulance for observation. A few minutes later they determined that he should take a ride to the hospital. After a short visit to the hospital, Chiaramonte was on the way back home. He was "pretty sore and swollen" according to his father Daniel but was already itching to get back into a race car. One he would not be getting back into is the one from Perris. That car was destroyed in the terrifying crash. Unfortunately, that included the engine. Daniel tried to find a 410 to get him on the track for Saturday's USAC/CRA race at Cocopah, but the search proved to be fruitless and he is sitting out this weekend. "Well, got my first big one out of the way," Chiaramonte posted to all of his Facebook followers. "Didn't have the night we wanted but that's part of racing. Big thanks to all the officials for the help getting me out of the car and everyone else that helped out. And big thanks to everyone for checking in on me and making sure I was all good. I'm ready to get back in the car and wishing we had a motor for this weekend." Look for Chiaramonte to return to action next Saturday, March 30th, at Placerville. It will be his first full-size winged sprint car start since last August at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. - Placerville Speedway christens another championship season this Saturday
Placerville, CA…Placerville Speedway is eager to begin another championship season with the exhilarating sound of engines returning to the red clay this Saturday March 23rd. The El Dorado County Fairgrounds based quarter mile will present an exciting program of grass roots dirt track racing, including the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Cars, the Anrak Ltd. Late Models, Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks and the BCRA Lightning Sprints. Live music will be performed in the grandstand entertainment zone from 4-6pm by Ed Wilson. Thirst quenching drinks and some of the finest racetrack cuisine in California is set to be offered at the Speedway Café, as we kick-off season 59 at the Placerville bullring. Hanford's Michael Faccinto pocketed the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged Sprint Car championship last season, giving owners F&F Racing yet another title. Faccinto put together an extremely consistent campaign last season and returns in 2024 looking for even more. After claiming three wins during the Hoosier Tires championship season last year Modesto's Tony Gomes hopes to secure another victory on Saturday. Gomes showed immense speed with C&M Motorsports and more of the same is expected this year. Rounding out the top-five in points last season were Shane Hopkins, Ashlyn Rodriguez and Rookie of the Year, Luke Hayes. Track legend Dan Jinkerson brought home his third consecutive Anrak Ltd. Late Model title last season after tallying three wins and seven top-five finishes. From a consistency standpoint Auburn's Ray Trimble was even with Jinkerson but missed out on the championship by just 20-points. Tyler Lightfoot, Rod Oliver and Dan Brown Jr. completed the top-five. The ground pounders will contest nine events this season in Placerville. Last season saw Nick Baldwin put together another stout campaign with the Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks. The Oakley, CA driver accumulated six wins and finished among the top-five all but once, on way to his fifth career track championship over Kevin Jinkerson. The Pure Stocks will see 13 total nights of racing. Waterford's Dakota Albright picked up four wins last season with the Bay Cities Racing Association Lightning Sprints at Placerville Speedway. Albright this year, however, will be competing with the Thompson's Winged Sprint Cars for Spencer Motorsports. The BCRA Lightning Sprints are keen to make several appearances, both with and without the wings. - AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE USAC/CRA SERIES PERFORMANCE AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY, BRADEN CHIARAMONTE HAS A AND B OPTIONS THIS WEEKEND
(El Cajon, CA, February 28, 2024) Following an impressive 16th to 8th showing in the 20th anniversary season opening USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event last weekend, Braden Chiaramonte has a couple of options for this Saturday night. Weather permitting, he will be contesting the inaugural USCS race at the Ventura Raceway. However, rainy weather conditions may throw a wrench into those plans. If weather indeed intervenes, the #73B team will load up its 600cc micro and head to Arizona's Adobe Mountain Speedway. Last week Chiaramonte, who turned 17-years-old on Sunday, shined in the 30-lap main event at Perris. Competing in a powerful 410 sprint for only the third time and the first time on the lightning fast ½ mile clay oval, he began the main event in 16th and raced forward to an eighth-place finish. That gives the talented teen three top 10s (two of them being top five) in his first three 410 starts. In qualifying, the El Cajon, California rising star ended up 17th with a lap of 17.343. A new setup for the heat did not deliver the goods as hoped. Needing a fourth-place finish to qualify for the A main, Chiaramonte ended up seventh. That meant he would have to race in the B main and finish in the top 10 of the 13 car field to make the A. He did so with no problem and recorded the fastest lap in the race with a dazzling 16.810. The main not only featured the best traditional 410 sprint car drivers on the West Coast but also top drivers from Arizona, Indiana, and Ohio. Chiaramonte went nothing but forward in the main event. He smoothly and methodically passed eight cars to finish eighth. Only one other driver passed more cars - nine - than Chiaramonte. Just as impressive as his passing job was his fastest lap in the race. His 17.072 was faster than the best lap of the main event winner. In fact, only one other driver had a quicker lap in the main than the handsome rookie. Chiaramonte, who will be competing regularly in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and USAC/CRA Series this season, will next see action at Perris on March 16th. As of now, the plan is still in place to race at Ventura with the USCS on Saturday. Over the past two seasons, Chiaramonte has made two appearances at the track located at the beach. His best finish was a seventh with the USAC Western Midgets in May of 2022. His last appearance came at the track three months ago when he placed 13th in the B main at the Turkey Night Grand Prix. The racers at Ventura are hoping for clear skies so they can race. The racers at Adobe Mountain are also hoping for clear skies at Ventura so Chiaramonte will race there, rather than battle with them in the "Copper State." In three appearances at Adobe last season, Chiaramonte posted two wins and a sixth-place finish. To keep updated on the weather at Ventura or for ticket prices and times visit http://venturaraceway.com/ or call (805) 648- RACE. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). If Ventura is rained, instead of heading north, Chiaramonte will head east to Adobe The track is located at just south of Pinnacle Peak Road on 43rd Avenue in Glendale, Arizona. Wheel packing will begin at 4:30 with racing to follow. General admission tickets for those 13 and over are $10.00. For kids 5-12 it is only $5.00 and children 4 and under are free. The track website is at https://www.adobemountainspeedway.com/ and the office phone is (207) 977-6520. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - 2024 NARC 410 SPRINT CAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP OPEN FOR THE TAKING!
(2/27/24 - Ben Deatherage) ... With a brand-new season for the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series right around the corner, it's incredible to think of all the potential drivers that could win the King of the West title, let alone a feature event during the 2024 campaign. With 26 nights of exciting action taking place at so many different racetracks along the Pacific Coast, things are definitely up for grabs. Below is a look at where success and some upsets could come from with the regulars and frequent visitors to the NARC tour. THE REGULARS The first category we will explore is the drivers slated to compete regularly with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series in 2024. Justin Sanders, from Aromas, hit the jackpot on the final night of the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup, at Alger, Washington's Skagit Speedway, by winning over $80,000 for Mittry Motorsports #2X last June, as well as winning the overall Morrie Williams Memorial at Kings Speedway in mid-October. Undoubtedly, all the success he achieved in Australia the previous winter, coupled with several trips to the Midwest, made him a force to reckon with in 2023 and this coming season. To date, he has scored 15 NARC wins. Returning behind the wheel of the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X, Justyn Cox from Roseville will also be a front-runner in the championship battle. Cox scored a massive triumph at Tulare's Dennis Roth Classic with $18,000+ in winnings in April and eventually was crowned the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360 title winner. Undoubtedly, he's looking to add a NARC 410 Sprint Car Series crown to his trophy case come the Tribute To Gary Patterson at Stockton in November. Campbell's Bud Kaeding knows what it takes to achieve a championship with the NARC Series. The 2017 title winner once again finished in the top five in the final standings, and nearly collected a win at Petaluma Speedway during the May visit. It seems all it will take for Kaeding is to win once, and then the victory machine will be hitting on all eight-cylinders again. He has 21 NARC wins to his credit. Speaking of Petaluma, race fans are still talking about the amazing Salute To Baylands victory that Chase Johnson scored in July. The Penngrove pilot may have only won once last year with NARC, but he managed to accumulate some wins with and without the wing and in both 360 and 410 powerplants. Johnson no doubt will have a diverse 2024 schedule, which also includes Midgets on the calendar. Once more driving the Dave and Debbie Vertullo #83V, Dylan Bloomfield proved he can hang with the NARC ranks for an entire season. The Oakley driver managed a pair of Top 5 feature finishes and finally had a breakthrough victory in 360 competition on the preliminary night of the Fall Nationals at Silver Dollar Speedway. Could that translate into a David Tarter Memorial or Mini Gold Cup win this season when the tour visits Chico? Don't bet against it. Billy Aton will be another familiar face to see when the NARC group hits the road. Aton is excited about NARC's return to Santa Maria Speedway in 2024. What makes that track special is that it is the site of his lone NARC triumph in 2021. The Benicia driver and his team are a great group to have around with their infectious smiles and "no quit" attitude despite 2023 starting so rough for them in the spring. After being named the NARC Rookie of the Year at last year's championship celebration, Nick Parker is looking to build on that accolade. The Tucson, Arizona native, now residing in Chico, has a full year of NARC racing under his belt, making the rounds of the multiple tracks on the NARC campaign. That experience has culminated in a detailed notebook of improvements and nuances needed for success. That should spell improved performance for his team that should result in top finishes. Jarrett Soares will return to the NARC 410 Series when the engines fire up on March 9th. Returning to full-time series competition for the first time since 2016, the Gilroy gasser will be a delightful addition to the cast of characters tearing up the clay. Last year, Soares scored a pair of Non-Wing 360 Sprint victories at Antioch Speedway and traveled across the state of California as well as into the Pacific Northwest. THE ROOKS We've talked about some of the regulars, but a unique twist to the NARC 2024 campaign will be the youth movement by drivers who are still cutting their teeth in Sprint Cars and some with just a handful of starts in a 410. The battle for the Rookie of the Year award will be a barnburner from March to November. Dominic Gorden got some 410 racing under his belt late last year. Under the tutelage of crew chief Richard Brown, the Clovis teenager scored a trio of 360 triumphs, twice at Ocean and once at Marysville, as well as collecting the Western Sprint Tour title. Gorden didn't have much of a quiet offseason as he won six Caged Clone races at the Chowchilla Barn Burner and got the big payday at Nevada's Reno Livestock Events Center in February during the High Desert Hustle. He promises to be a top ten fixture. Lemoore driver Gauge Garcia spent last year splitting driving duties between the Tarlton Motorsports #21X and the Keller Motorsports #2K. Garcia had a pair of 360 wins in 2023, including the Cotton Classic in October at Kings and a thriller of a win at Tulare in May. His best NARC finish was a third at the Morrie Williams Memorial race. Garcia plans to chase the rookie title aboard the Keller Motorsports ride. Fresno's Caeden Steele is another individual to watch closely. Steele had some great battles with Bud Kaeding at Ocean Speedway on Friday nights in the Ocean Sprints 360 ranks, including posting a win in late August. Something noteworthy is in late July, he was able to record a sixth-place result at Skagit Speedway against a stacked field of 410 competitors with a 360 in between the frame rails. Another addition to the series will be Chico-based team of Michael Ing. The 22-year driver has five-years of experience in both 360's and a limited amount of time in 410's and will be driving a family owned and operated team with David Ing on the wrenches. Concord's Joey Ancona opened some eyes with some stellar NARC performances in a handful of races last season. The 19-year-old driver posted a NARC season best third place finish at Antioch Speedway last season. He still retains his "rookie" status in 2024. THE SPOILERS The last topic to cover is the many potential spoilers that will enter the battle during the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series. What makes NARC such an incredibly tough series is that anyone can win on any given night. Despite not running full-time with NARC in 2024, Dominic Scelzi will still be a force to reckon with. The two-time series champion has already logged many laps, filling in for James McFadden with the High Limit Series. This move reunited him with the Roth Motorsports team. Whether it's in Washington, Oregon, or California, the Fresno driver is sure to be upfront. He will be racing around the country and plans to return to California in May for the balance of the NARC season. Scelzi has 22 NARC victories on his resume'. 2023 saw one of the biggest comeback stories in Sprint Car racing. After shattering his collarbone at the Trophy Cup in October 2022, D.J. Netto returned and won. In his first race in March of 2023, he bested the ASCS-Southwest Region competition at Central Arizona Raceway. The Hanford pilot finally returned to NARC victory lane when he scored his seventh career NARC victory at the Morrie Williams Memorial at the end of the second Twin-20 main event. Carson Macedo won the NARC title in 2015, but one thing he did not do is something his younger brother Cole Macedo managed to accomplish in June, win a NARC feature. The younger Macedo took care of business at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon, and was the only driver to beat eventual tour champion Corey Day during the Fastest Four Days Of Motorsports. Macedo also has spent some time in Florida and Georgia racing the Kevin Newton #16TH with the High Limit Series. He is a threat to win on any given night. With two trips to Silver Dollar Speedway, the 2022 SDS track champion Shane Golobic is one driver to not discount. The Matt Wood Racing #17W team has got Chico ¼-mile on lock and has won eight races in the last two seasons. Finishing sixth on the final night of the Gold Cup Race of Champions, the Fremont native wowed the crowd at Ocean Speedway when he finally won the Howard Kaeding Classic at Watsonville in July. He had ten victories between 410, 360, and Midget competition. He has 15 career NARC wins. Whether it was in the Larry Antaya #16A or the Jim and Annette Van Lare #5V, Colby Copeland was always a contender for a victory. The Roseville racer won with the Van Lare's at Placerville Speedway at the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial mere days after his car owner lost his father. This made for a very powerful post race interview in victory lane. Copeland would back that up with another emotional victory lane visit at the Van Lare's home track at Petaluma when they bested the SCCT on the adobe 3/8-mile oval. Making a healthy number of NARC starts last year was Tanner Carrick. From Lincoln, Carrick won the first Sprint Car race in California in 2023 when he won the Sherm and Loree Toller Memorial at Marysville. He would get additional 360 wins at Ocean and Placerville. Carrick is notable for already achieving a win in 2024 by winning the Monday prelim at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 8th, which makes him the first Midget feature winner in the United States for this year. He is looking for his first career NARC win. 2005 NARC champion Sean Becker can be expected to make some appearances throughout the upcoming season. Now calling Roseville home, Becker had his best run with NARC on July 8th when he finished fourth at Petaluma. He closed the year out with an electric 360 win at Marysville with a win on Paul Hawes Memorial Sprint Spooktacular in late October. Last year, Andy Forsberg would collect his 200th career victory when he won the Tribute to Al Hinds at Placerville on April 15th. Three more additional wins, all at Marysville in 360 action, would add to the Auburn veterans total. Come the Mini Gold Cup and the David Tarter Memorial at Chico, he should be fun to watch. He was fourth on May 28th, his lone 410 top five of the campaign, and five total top tens at Chico for the four-time Silver Dollar Speedway track champ. Even though he spent much of the summer helping his son Cole in Kage Karts, Willie Croft was still fun to watch in his limited appearances with the NARC 410 Series. Croft, who resides in Colfax, posted two top-five finishes in eight 410 starts. This included a pair of runner-up finishes, getting one on May 28th at Silver Dollar and another at Skagit on July 22nd. Whether in California or his native Pacific Northwest, Trey Starks is always on the prowl for a win. Nearly capturing the prelude to the Dennis Roth Classic while racing for Scelzi Motorsports in April, he was also a contender at Grays Harbor Raceway's Timber Cup and the Dirt Cup. The two-time and defending Skagit Speedway track titlist from Puyallup, Washington, is looking to be the first Washington native to win the prestigious Dirt Cup since Seth Bergman did it in 2018. Tanner Holmes will be a fun driver to watch as he comes off a stint with the Shark Racing #1T after the Knoxville Nationals. This earned him a significant cram session in the final few months of 2023. Undoubtedly, he gained some valuable experience taking on the World Of Outlaws, expanding his knowledge of some new tracks and fierce competition that bettered his driving abilities. The Jacksonville, Oregon racer enjoyed a great Dirt Cup last year and posted several strong showings with the NARC series in the springtime. One of the Cinderella stories of 2023 was Michael Faccinto during the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial at Placerville. Faccinto, from Hanford, set quick time, collected a large amount of money with all the bonuses and contingencies, and almost pulled off a massive upset finishing second. The team which he drove for, which claimed the Placerville 360 championship, was the Friends & Family #X1 owned by Alan Bradway, Dave's brother, and Steve Tuccelli. Those are just a few of the interesting scenarios and stories taking place on the NARC tour this season. When you mix it all together, it promises to be a very entertaining season of open wheel racing on the left coast. So pick your favorite driver and team and we will see you at the NARC races.
- BRADEN CHIARAMONTE KICKS OFF 2024 SEASON AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY
(El Cajon, CA, February 22, 2024) One of the brightest young stars in open wheel racing, Braden Chiaramonte, will kick off his busy 2024 racing schedule with an appearance in Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 20th anniversary season opener at Perris Auto Speedway. The race will only be the third time the young star has raced a 410 sprint car and the first time he has done so at Perris. 2024 will be the first year in his budding career that sprint cars will be the main focus for the El Cajon, California-based racer. His current plan for the season is to compete in Northern California's Sprint Car Challenge Tour for Tyner Motorsports and the USAC/CRA Series in the family-owned #73B. In addition, he will also be racing some of the biggest micro shows in the nation. Chiaramonte, who turns 17 on Sunday, has raced a 410 sprint car two times in the past. Both of those came late last season at USAC/CRA races in Arizona. In both, he looked like a seasoned veteran and finished ahead of many of the West Coast's top stars. The first effort came at the Mohave Valley Raceway on October 14th. He shocked everyone by qualifying third fastest in the 27-car field and placing fourth in the main after starting ninth and briefly leading at one point. A few weeks later at the Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona, he raced a 410 sprint car for the second time. Competing against a tougher field, he qualified seventh fastest of the 28 cars on hand. In the main, he started seventh and steered his family-owned #73B forward to finish fifth. The two races in Arizona gave Chiaramonte two top-five finishes in his first two 410 races. That is indeed a rare feet as 410 non-wing sprint cars are among the most volatile race cars on the face of the earth. It usually takes drivers time to get comfortable and mash the throttles in the powerful machines. Saturday's race will not be Chiaramonte's first rodeo at Perris. In fact, he has visited victory circle there in the past with the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints. It will also not be his first appearance with the USAC/CRA Series at the famous Riverside County track. On two occasions at the track last year he took on the West Coast's best non-wing 410 open wheel racers. Even though he was racing a 360 against a field of strong 410s, he was moving up to 10th when he was punted into the wall on March 18th. He restarted at the back and came forward to 16th. He returned to the track in July but ended up 20th due to mechanical ills. "Our first two races went really good," Chiaramonte said about racing a 410. "We are still learning car setup and everything. I think the wing sprint cars have helped a lot because you are going so fast. It makes the non-wing cars feel like you are not going so fast. The wing stuff makes you drive a lot straighter. I think that helps a lot, too." This weekend he will be on equal level with the "big guns" with a 410 for the first time at Perris. "I am really excited," the well-spoken teen racer said. "It is going to be fun. That is for sure. Perris is fun, but it is a scary track at the same time. It is definitely a cowboy up track with the high straightaway speeds and the tight corners. You are going so fast on the straightaway and the next thing you know you have a really sharp turn to go through. You can't be scared of it, that is for sure." Great news for fans, but perhaps not the competition, Chiaramonte will be around a lot this season. It looks like he will only miss a handful of races. With good results, he could be a contender for the Rookie of the Year award. "We could be (a contender for the rookie award) if we do good these first couple of races and get a good point lead," Chiaramonte said. We still could have a shot. We will be running Tyner's car in the SCCT Series. I think right now with our schedule between SCCT and USAC, we are only going to miss around six races (USAC)." With his busy sprint car season, Chiaramonte will be cutting down on his micro schedule. "Out in California, we won't be running a lot. We will be running the KKM Challenge race (at Plaza Park in Visalia, California in March). That will be the first one in the micro and then we are going back to Texas again (Texas Micro Mania at Lil Texas Motor Speedway in April). We are going to try and hit big shows in the micro but we are going to focus on the sprint cars." Chiaramonte has brand-new shirts that will be available at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. Spectator gates to see the young racing star in action on Saturday will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For those who do not want to purchase advance tickets, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is http://www.perrisautospeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (951) 940-0134. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. RTL Traffic Control, AM Ortega, Hyper Racing, Chop Design, Adams Motors, Hacienda Casa Blanca Fine Mexican Dining, Evil Plus Injection, King Racing Products, Tiner-Hirst Enterprises, and Keizer Wheels.
