- TOMMY MALCOLM BRINGS USAC/CRA POINT LEAD HOME TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Perris, CA, April 23, 2024) While it seems like just yesterday, it was about 15 years ago that a small teen showed up at the sign up booth to race a street stock at Perris Auto Speedway. The young driver became an immediate hit with the fans at the track. He went on to become a successful late model racer winning main events around the West Coast. A few years ago, he dropped the cars that had roofs on them to race 410 sprint cars. This Saturday night, for the first time in his career, Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm will enter the pits at the track where it all began as the points leader in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The likable driver and his brother Johnny both began their racing careers at Perris. That was natural as their stepfather Dino Napier was one of the top drivers at the track in its early days. Napier captured the championship in the PASSCAR California Champ Truck Series in 2002. The family continued to race at the Riverside County oval until the track dropped the late model class. To continue racing late models, the family team raced up and down the West Coast. After purchasing a sprint car from David Cardey a few years ago, Malcolm paid his dues getting used to the 1200 pound, 900 horsepower open wheel racecar. Never giving up, he came close to victories several times. However, it seems like each time the jaws of defeat would snatch his initial sprint car win away. The most heartbreaking came two years ago at the Bakersfield Speedway. Malcolm was leading the 30-lap main event. During a yellow flag period late in the race, a flat tire sent him to the work area and the back of the pack for the restart. "You would be hard-pressed to find a nicer driver than Tommy," Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said. "He was a nice, respectful teen when he first came to race with us and nothing has changed. He is just as nice today as he was at 15. There is no ego there at all. He lets his driving do the talking and it speaks in volumes." "In the street stocks, he quickly got up to speed and had a big fan following. The same when he jumped up to late models. As soon as he switched to a sprint car, you could tell he was going to be okay. He finally got some wins last season. They were a long time coming and very well deserved. Now he is a contender each time he comes onto the track. He will surely be one of the favorites coming into this Saturday's race." The wait for Malcolm to win his first sprint car race ended at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on May 20th, 2023. The time gap for his second win was not a long one. In fact, he won the prestigious Salute to Indy seven days later at Perris. Malcolm backed those triumphs up with a victory in the Glen Howard Classic at Perris on September 23rd. A third-place finish at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway three weeks ago propelled the Yucaipa, California driver into the 2024 USAC/CRA point lead. Coming into Saturday's race, he has a one-point lead over Santa Barbara, California's David Gasper. Laveen, Arizona's RJ Johnson, Logan Williams of Yorba Linda, California, and Camarillo's Ricky Lewis round out the top five. Amazingly first to fifth is only separated by 20 points. All but Lewis, who spends the regular season in the Midwest, will be on hand this Saturday night. Besides the third-place finish, thus far in 2024, Malcolm, who was married last year, has two sixth-place results and a seventh. So far this season, he has yet to finish in a position worse than where he started in the four USAC/CRA main events to date. On opening night at Perris, he started 14th and finished sixth. At the second race of the year, which was also at Perris, he began in 11th and placed sixth again. In March at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway in a race that was cut short 10 laps early due to rain, he started and finished seventh. In his third-place finish at Mohave, he started in 10th. That one-point lead in the championship standings could be larger if Malcolm had some better luck in qualifying. With the exception of Cocopah where he was fast qualifier, he has timed in at 15th, 16th, and 12th this season. All of which means he has had to start mid-pack and weave his way through the traffic in three of the four races. In addition to Malcolm and the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints, PAS Senior Sprints, and the PASSCAR Super Stocks and American Factory Stocks will also be in action on Saturday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, we will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. To keep up with everything going on at The PAS please visit our social media on Facebook and Instagram and visit the website at perrisautospeedway.com. - APRIL 27TH NARC SPRINT CAR SHOW AT STOCKTON POSTPONED UNTIL MAY 19TH
(4/18/24 - Jim Allen) Auburn, CA ... The Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC) sprint cars announced the postponement of the April 27th race scheduled at the Stockton Dirt Track. The race is rescheduled for Sunday, May 19th, as part of a two-day NARC sprint car doubleheader weekend that includes the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare (May 18th.) The Stockton event will become a twilight show with qualifying taking place around 4:00 p.m. Also on the card is BCRA midgets. Due to a tight turnaround time between other events taking place at the fairgrounds, promoter Tony Noceti is unable to complete the track improvements he promised after the NARC season opener. "After the April 6th show, I was provided with several suggestions on how to improve the new layout and I committed to getting those completed," said Noceti. "These will help promote better racing, improve safety, and a better overall flow to the event. I need all of them completed before we race again." The next event on the NARC schedule is the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial at the Tulare Thunderbowl on May 4th.
- $11,000 TO WIN PETER MURPHY CLASSIC AWAITS NARC 410 SPRINT CAR SERIES ON SATURDAY
(4/8/24 - Ben Deatherage) Hanford, California ... A crown jewel of the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series schedule, the Peter Murphy Classic is on tap Saturday, April 13th, at Kings Speedway. The winner of the main event will collect a whopping $11,000 paycheck and etch their name on the prestigious winner's list of this famed event. The race pays homage to Kings Speedway promotor and longtime NARC competitor Peter Murphy. One of this events special features is a unique "pole shuffle" where two cars at a time will razzle and dazzle on the 3/8-mile clay oval to decide the main event's starting lineup of the front of the field. It is always a fan-pleaser. "I'm super excited to have this event come back to Kings," commented Murphy, a transplanted Australian and open wheel racing enthusiast. "Last year's pole shuffle was breathtakingly amazing, and the main event was a cracker, too, so come on out and bring a friend because Hanford is the place to be on Saturday night!" This will be the third round of the highly competitive 65th anniversary season of the NARC tour and the second five-digit payday for the main event winner. The companion division for the evening is the IMCA Stock Cars. Who to Watch Dominic Scelzi is looking to continue to reign supreme of the PMC. The Fresno driver has been on the road battling it out with the High Limit and World of Outlaw tour and is looking to come back to his native California and hit pay dirt. The 2021 and 2022 NARC champion is the three-time defending winner of the Peter Murphy Classic. NARC point leader Cole Macedo wants to take the $11,000 winner's check to the Tarlton Motorsports #21 shop. The Lemoore sensation bagged a $10,000 payday at the Mini Gold Cup in March and backed it up at the Stockton Dirt Track's Asparagus Cup last Saturday. Macedo has three top five finishes at Kings when NARC has been to town and was runner-up in the second main event of the Morrie Williams Memorial. Last October, Justin Sanders finally broke into victory lane at Hanford when he won the opening main event of the Morrie Williams Memorial. Once again piloting the Mittry Motorsports #2X, the Aromas driver has five podium finishes at the 3/8-mile oval and was fourth at last year's Classic. The last time NARC was on hand at Hanford, hometown driver D.J. Netto beat out the competition in the final feature of the Morrie Williams Memorial to score a big win for the team. Undoubtedly, the 2019 NARC champion is hungry to add the Peter Murphy Classic to his already decorated resume. Eighteen-year-old Dylan Bloomfield is a rising star in the NARC 410 Sprint Series. The Oakley driver has twice finished the Vertullo Racing #83V entry among the Top 10 at Kings and is looking to be among the podium finishers on Saturday night. He was 14th last year. Campbell's Bud Kaeding is looking to build off a top five finish last fall at Hanford. The 2017 NARC champ was fourth in the final race at King's in October 2023 and scored a victory at the facility on June 2nd, 2012. He was among the Top 10 at the 2022 Peter Murphy Classic when he posted a ninth-place result. Justyn Cox has been very close to conquering Kings twice. The Roseville racer was runner-up in the first feature of the Morrie Williams Memorial last October and did the same thing the previous year but in the second main event. Will the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X slay the competition at the PMC? The large 2024 rookie class will also be on hand, including Caeden Steele from Easton, Lemoore's Gauge Garcia, Chico chauffeur Michael Ing, and Dominic Gorden of Clovis. Other teams looking for victory lane include Chase Johnson of Penngrove, Nick Parker from Chico, Benicia veteran Billy Aton, and Gilroy's Jarrett Soares. Some other notables to look forward to are Fremont's Shane Golobic, Hanford driver Michael Faccinto bout the F&F Racing #X1, and Templeton pilot Kaleb Montgomery. Fan & Competitor Info Kings Speedway is located at the San Joaquin County Fairground at 1658 S Airport Way in Stockton, California. Tickets are $30.00 for Adults, Juniors (5-17)/Seniors (65+)/Military (with ID) $25.00, Kids (6-10) $5.00, and 4 and Under are FREE. The Pit Gates will open at 1:00 PM and the Front Gates at 4:00. - NARC SPRINT CARS SET TO TACKLE ASPARAGUS CUP AT NEWLY CONFIGURED STOCKTON DIRT TRACK
(4/1/24 - Ben Deatherage) Stockton, CA ... The wait will soon be over as the highly anticipated reshaped Stockton Dirt Track is set to host the 900+ horsepower speed machines of the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series. The Saturday, April 6th show will feature the West Coast top teams as they negotiate a new ¼-mile clay oval at the 2024 Asparagus Cup. "Sprint car teams have been asking for a reconfiguration of our track to promote even better open-wheel racing," explained promoter Tony Noceti. "We worked hard over the winter to meet that demand, and I'm proud of what we have created at the Stockton Dirt Track. Race fans are going to be treated to an exciting bullring of sprint car racing action on our new quarter-mile oval." With the newly configured track, all of the traveling teams will have to start from scratch, negating years of research and volumes of track notes on car set-ups. That makes the Asparagus Cup a wide-open affair with no team having a distinct advantage. This marks the second round of the Northern Auto Racing Club's 65th-anniversary series, that has already experienced two rainouts this Spring. The companion division for the evening is the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360 Sprints. Who to Watch Colby Copeland will make his 2024 debut with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series on Saturday, driving the Larry Antaya-owned #16A entry. Copeland, from Roseville, is the defending winner of the Asparagus Cup, claiming top honors in April of 2022. The 2023 event was rained out. "I know there's a little different shape of a track, but we are hoping to get dialed in be at the front," commented Copeland, who hopes to continue the Asparagus Cup success. "It should be interesting, but the thing is that everyone will start on the same track and no one will have an advantage on anyone else. "It would be good to win again. The #16A car was fast at the Mini Gold Cup with (Ryan) Robinson and should be fast at Stockton." 2019 NARC champion D.J. Netto has visited the trademark winner's circle twice at Stockton in NARC action. Both were Salute to LeRoy Van Conett events, and his most recent Stockton victory was in July of 2022. Cole Macedo is the lone winner on the current NARC circuit, having earned $10,000 at Silver Dollar Speedway's Mini Gold Cup. The Lemoore driver, aboard the famed Tarlton Motorsports #21, is looking to capture his first Stockton victory. His best 410 finish was a 14th-place effort in November 2018 at the Tribute to Gary Patterson. Justin Sanders is no slouch at Stockton, as he had an incredible performance at the 2022 Tribute to GP to close out the NARC season with a victory. Behind the wheel of the Mittry Motorsports #2X, the Aromas driver is looking to open up his 2024 winning account on Saturday night. Other NARC 410 Series regulars competing for a NARC victory include the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X driven by Clarksburg driver Justyn Cox, 2017 series champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Oakley pilot Dylan Bloomfield in the Vertullo #83V, Billy Aton from Benicia, Penngrove's Chase Johnson, Chico's Nick Parker, Jarrett Soares of Gilroy and many more. This includes the sizable NARC rookie class of 2024, which includes Easton's Caeden Steele, Gauge Garcia of Lemoore, Dominic Gorden from Clovis, and Chico native Michael Ing. Fan & Competitor Info The Stockton Dirt Track is located at the San Joaquin County Fairground at 1658 S Airport Way in Stockton, California. - BRODY ROA BACK WITH CAR OWNER JASON MAY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2022
(Cypress, CA, March 27, 2024) Weather permitting, for the first time since 2022, veteran sprint car racer Brody Roa will team up with Taft, California car owner Jason May at this Saturday's Dave Calderwood Memorial at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. It will be the inaugural race for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Roa made several starts in May's gorgeous #8M prior to 2023 and to say the duo was impressive whenever they showed up at the track is an understatement. Their most memorable win came on August 8, 2022, in the USAC/CRA race at the Santa Maria Raceway. Wheeling May's 360 car against a full field of 410s, Roa qualified seventh fastest and started the main event on the pole. After leading the first 14 circuits on a track that was rougher than a volcanic lava field, the Garden Grove, California racing star lost the lead on the 15th go around. Not to be denied, he hung close to the new leader and snatched the top spot back on lap 21. From there, he led the final nine laps for a very exciting win. Eight months later, Roa and May swept a racing weekend in California's Central Valley. They kicked things off on Friday night in an open comp 360 race on the same Kern County oval he hopes he will be racing on this weekend if Mother Nature cooperates. Twenty-four hours later they made the short 64-mile drive to Tulare's Thunderbowl Raceway and triumphed once again. Tulare not being his best track, the victory surprised Roa. After the race, he told infield announcer Bobby Gerald and the excited crowd, ""If you would have told me I would have won a race at Tulare I would have told you that you were crazy. On an average night, a shopping kart could beat me around here." Roa's first triumph for May was a surprise as well. A week before Labor Day Weekend in 2020, Roa received a call from May offering him a ride in the #8M for the first ever Central Arizona Speedway Sprint Car Series races. Roa gladly accepted the offer and won the main event on the Casa Grande oval. One night later, he started the main in 13th and despite losing his brakes around the halfway mark, he came home in sixth place. "I did not drive for him at all last year," Roa said on Tuesday night. "2022 was the last time I ran for him. He did not run many races last year. One car is brand new. A new DRC. Similar to my package that I have here, so, I am looking forward to that. He spent a lot of time and effort getting engines back together last year. Part of the reason that he did not race a lot I think. He was collecting all of his eggs to put a good package together. I think we are both optimistic on how it is going to go if we get this weekend in." "I couldn't even tell you," Roa exclaimed when asked how many races he and May won together. " I was talking about it with my dad the other day. It seems like almost every time we went out we won." Last Saturday Roa drove a car for longtime racer and car owner Jack Yeley in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway. Unfortunately, that night ended a lot earlier than he hoped. After qualifying 12th in the 17-car field, the crew made some alterations to the car before the heat race. "It was a bummer for sure," Roa recalled about the short night. "We started off a little slow. We started tuning some things in and made some big changes for the heat race. We rolled around for a few laps. Right before we got lined up I went to hot lap out of turn two. About 150 feet on the gas, it let go. I do not know exactly what broke but it spit the driveshaft out of it. That was the end of our night." The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, K-1 Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - NARC 410 SPRINT CARS SERIES SET TO INVADE MERCED SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY!
(6/18/24 - Ben Deatherage) Merced, California ... The Central Valley is about to hear the roar of the 900+ horsepower powerplants of the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series on Saturday, March 23rd, when the tour returns to Merced Speedway! The high-banked ¼-mile clay oval will host the cars and stars of the NARC organization for the first time since August of 2021 and will be the lone visit to the facility in 2024. This marks the second stop on NARC's 65th Anniversary 25-race campaign, which is slated to visit 17-different dirt oval tracks in California, Oregon, and Washington. "I'm super excited to get to Merced," said Lemoore driver Cole Macedo, hot off a big win at the Mini-Gold Cup in the Tarlton Motorsports #21 sprint car. "I know (promoter) Doug Lockwood has put in a lot of effort to make that place what it is today. I think Drew Warner (crew chief) will give me a fast race car, and if I do my job, we should come out with a good finish." Macedo is the current NARC championship point leader after scoring his second NARC feature win of his career in Chico. Many of the NARC sprint cars stars will be competing on the action-packed bullring for the first time, including a strong class of rookie drivers. This year's rookie field includes Lemoore's Caeden Steele, who finished third in Chico, Fresno's Gauge Garcia, Dominic Gorden from Clovis, Chico's Michael Ing and Wilton's Ashlyn Rodriguez. Who to Watch Aromas' Justin Sanders, expected to be a strong challenger for the 2024 NARC title, will be looking to rebound after a crash took him out of contention in Chico. Sanders hit pay dirt in the series' last visit to the track in August 2021 and knows that a victory gets him right back into the title hunt. Shane Golobic, who finished second in the NARC season opener in Chico, is looking to put the Matt Wood Racing #17W car in NARC victory lane for the first time at Merced Speedway. Golobic placed fifth in 2021 and was 16th when the World Of Outlaws visited in March 2022. Bud Kaeding, who claimed the series title in 2017, still doesn't have a Merced victory on this impressive resume. He came across the line in sixth when NARC was in Merced last time. With a retro look for the #29 team, the Campbell racer is looking to check off Merced on his win list. Tim Kaeding, from San Jose, will no doubt wow the crowd in the famed Williams Motorsports #0 entry. The "Governor of Good Times" was fourth in the last NARC trip to Merced. Kaeding is hitting the NARC trail heavy this spring and the 2002 and 2011 series champion is hungry to revisit victory lane. He has 72 NARC victories to his credit. Chase Johnson of Penngrove has a lot of laps and wins at Merced in many different types of cars, but the pilot of the #24 has yet to win in the 410 ranks. Johnson was third in a USAC-CRA race in September of 2019 and is in search of his fourth career NARC win. Other NARC 410 Series stars expected to compete include Justyn Cox from Clarksburg, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield, Billy Aton of Benicia, Gilroy 's Jarrett Soares, Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton, Michael Faccinto and DJ Netto from Hanford and many more! Fan & Competitor Info The companion divisions for the evening include the Hobby Stocks, Mini Late Models, and IMCA Northern SportMods. Merced Speedway is located at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Merced, California. Tickets are $25.00 for Adults, Juniors (11-17) $10.00, Kids (6-10) $5.00, and 5 and Under are FREE. Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM and the Front Gates at 5:00. Hot Laps are expected to begin around 6:00, with racing kicking off at 7:00. Additional information can be found at www.mercedspeedway.net. The NARC racing format includes qualifying, four eight-lap heat races, an exciting six-lap trophy dash, a 12-lap last chance race, and a 30-lap main event. - $10,000 ON THE LINE FOR NARC MINI-GOLD CUP WINNER AT CHICO ON SATURDAY
(3/11/24 - Ben Deatherage) Chico, CA ... The NARC 410 Sprint Car Series is excited to lift the lid on its 65th competitive season on Saturday, March 16th, at Silver Dollar Speedway! The historic Chico ¼-mile clay oval hosts the opening leg of the 2024 campaign and will have $10,000 on the line to the driver that bests the field of the Mini Gold Cup main event. After last weekend's rainout at Hanford, this marks the first of 25 premier racing events that will invade 17-different dirt oval tracks in California, Oregon, and Washington. "This is going to be such a great event at this place, and it's great to have NARC back to Chico," commented Silver Dollar Speedway General Manager and Announcer Troy Hennig. "We've done some really wonderful things here over the offseason, and I think fans and drivers are going to like it, especially the brand-new catch fence." With defending champion Corey Day moving to the national touring High Limit Series and two-time champ Dominic Scelzi touring around the country this Spring, the battle for the prestigious NARC championship is expected to be a wide open and highly-contested affair. The addition of several new up and coming drivers and teams promise to make it even more interesting. Who to Watch Justin Sanders, from Aromas, has amassed two of his series triumphs at Silver Dollar, achieved in 2019 and 2021. The Mittry Motorsports #2X pilot was runner-up at the April 30th show in 2022. Both Chico events were rained out last season. Sanders, a 15-time winner on the NARC circuit, is expected to be a top contender for the NARC championship this season. Justyn Cox made it to Silver Dollar Speedway just a handful of times in 2023 but did manage to put the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X in the main events during the Gold Cup Race of Champions. Cox posted 15 top ten NARC finishes last year including a huge victory at Tulare and will be a nightly force to be reckoned with. Lemoore's Cole Macedo and Bud Kaeding of Campbell are also expected to be battling for the title this season. Both have ample experience to make that happen. Macedo, who has won several races around the country, captured his first NARC feature event last season and Kaeding was the 2017 NARC series champion. Kaeding has 21 series wins to his credit. There's no doubt that the biggest target on anyone's back is Shane Golobic. The Fremont chauffeur, piloting the Matt Wood Racing #17W, is the most recent non-sanctioned 410 feature winner at SDS when he won the fair race on May 28th. The last time the facility was in action, he scored the victory on the final night of the 360 Fall Nationals last October. Many young Central Valley competitors are expected to be in the field, including Lemoore's Gauge Garcia, Dominic Gordon from Clovis, 2019 NARC champion D.J. Netto from Hanford, and Caeden Steele of Fresno. Other competitors include Penngrove driver Chase Johnson, Oakley pilot Dylan Bloomfield, Jarrett Soares of Gilroy, Benicia's Billy Aton, reigning Rookie of the Year Nick Parker from Tucson, Tim Kaeding of San Jose, Chico's Michael Ing, Ashlyn Rodriguez of Wilton, Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton, Auburn's Andy Forsberg, and many more. Fan & Competitor Info Silver Dollar Speedway is located at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds at 2357 Fair Street in Chico, California. Tickets can be purchased online at silverdollar.ticketspice.com.
