dirtFan website

(Ontario, CA, March 21, 2024) Flowdynamics team driver Logan Williams came from the 15th place starting spot to finish fifth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. The determined effort earned the veteran driver the night's Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars in the 30-lap main event. Combined with his sixth-place finish in the season opener in February, Williams enters this Saturday's race at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway tied for fifth in the 2024 championship standings.

Williams, the 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was joined by Flowdynamics teammate Matt McCarthy, the 2017 series Rookie of the Year, at the famous Southern California half-mile clay oval. Kicking off the night, McCarthy, who lives in nearby Riverside, California, was fourth fastest in hot laps at 16.816. Williams, who calls Yorba Linda, California home, was 14th at 17.217.

By the time qualifying rolled around, the racing surface, which was juiced up from recent rains, along with cloudy, and cool temperatures, produced the fastest qualifying session in several seasons at the famous speed plant. McCarthy was 13th quickest in the top-notch 24-car field when he stopped the clocks at 16.568. Williams was only two spots behind at 16.603. That was good enough for the 15th best time of the night.

McCarthy, who was knocked out of the season opener with a faulty steering box, dazzled the competition by snaring his initial heat race win of the year after starting on the outside of row #1 in the first 10-lapper. A few minutes later, Williams started in the same position in his heat and drove to a second-place finish.

Due to their qualifying times, the gorgeous #28M McCarthy car and the equally beautiful #5W of Williams started 13th and 15th respectively in the main. Both cars proved to be rocket ships in the race. Once the green flag flew, they headed toward the front of the pack and began passing cars.

With two laps to go, Williams was fourth and McCarthy was directly behind him. However, soon after the green light flashed back on, McCarthy clipped the wall out of turn two. Unfortunately, his car suffered enough damage that it had to be towed off and he finished 10th.

After McCarthy's bad luck, Williams was fourth going into the last lap of the race. However, another car got past him on the final circuit putting him fifth at Steve Russell's checkered flag.

While Williams is headed to Arizona for Saturday's race, McCarthy, who is 20th in points, will be taking this week off.

The front gate will open at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Cocopah with the first race at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors and military with id get in for $18.00. For students 13-17 it is only $10.00 and children 12 & under are free. The track is located at 3450 W. County 15th Street in Somerton, Arizona (85350).
