GRANT SEXTON GETS SEVENTH IN THE USCS MAIN AT VENTURA

(Lakeside, CA, July 24, 2024) Grant Sexton placed seventh in the Inland Rigging Ultimate Sprint Car Series Surecan Showdown main event last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway. In addition to the newly turned 20-year-old, his father, Brent Sexton, represented Sexton Gatlin Racing and ended up seventh in the B Main.

Grant, whose best USCS finish thus far came in the June 3rd race on the same beachside Ventura oval, kicked off his night when he timed in second fastest of eight in qualifying group B. He backed that up with a fine fifth to second run in his 10-lap heat race. The key was avoiding the chaos in front of him. In the end, he was hounding the leader all the way to the checkered flag. That earned him the outside front-row starting spot for the $5,000.00 to win 30-lap main.

Brent, 52, had a tougher rode to hoe to get into the finale. The three-time lightning sprint car champion stopped the clock with the sixth-best lap in qualifying group B. That put him on the outside of row three in his 10-lap heat. Unfortunately, the veteran Tennessee-born racer slipped one spot farther back than he started and finished seventh. That meant he had to go to the B main event.

Brent started sixth in the 12-lap B main. The race transferred six to the main event. Brent dropped back to seventh early but managed to stay within striking distance of the sixth-place car. Running the bottom, he was close to the final transfer spot and was trying to make the pass when the white flag flew. However, the red quickly replaced the white when a car farther back in the pack flipped in turn three. At that point, officials deemed the race complete rather than restart it for the last lap. That left Brent one position shy of the transfer. As a consolation, he received $250.00 from Surecan for the first car that did not transfer out of the B.

From his outside row one starting spot, Grant was second when the 30 lap main event began. On lap two, he went to the high side in turn one and slipped back to third. He was battling for third through the first 4 laps of the race and definitely had a car that was capable of placing on the podium. However, he had a huge setback on lap five. Hauling the car on the inside line entering turn number one, the third place car got a little too far sideways. Grant got sideways as well while trying to avoid it. He nearly did, but slight contact saw Grant spin to a stop.

The faux pas meant the Grant had to go to the back for the restart. From there he put on a show. He avoided the multiple tangles that slowed the action on the tight 1/5 mile oval for the remainder of the race. He also continually moved forward. When the checkered flag ended the affair, he had clawed his way all the way back to seventh. The car still had speed and was capable of taking more spots but he simply ran out of time.

This week, the Lakeside, California-based Sexton Gatlin Racing Team will take the weekend off before returning to action in what will be a busy month of August.
