Crigler cashes another 4 State Dirt Late Model victory at Lucas Oil Speedway

dirtFan website

WHEATLAND, MO. (July 19, 2025) - Sawyer Crigler continued his dominance on the 4 State Dirt Late Model Series and its action at Lucas Oil Speedway this season, winning the 30-lap feature on Saturday night over Dalton Cloyd.

Criger took the lead on lap three and held on after a late restart to earn his fifth series victory of the season and back up his 4 State win at Lucas Oil Speedway in March. He earned $1,250 for the win as he led the final 28 of 30 laps.

"It took a couple of laps to kind of get my rhythm going, but after that it was smooth sailing," the third-starting Crigler said in victory lane.

Cloyd led the opening two laps before Crigler grabbed the lead on lap three going down the backstretch. Crigler opened a 1.6-second lead when he caught lapped traffic on lap eight with Cloyd second and Cole Wells third.

The second-generation Late Model driver from Alton continued to thread his way through slower traffic to lead by 2.2 seconds at the halfway mark on lap 15. Wells took the second spot from Cloyd on lap 19 and began pursuit of the leader. But as the race remained under green, Crigler extended his cushion to 3.2 seconds with laps dwindling.

Just as it appeared that Crigler was on his way to a lopsided win, caution flew on lap 25 to give Wells, Cloyd and fourth-place Dustin Atkinson another chance.

Wells moved to second on the restart, closing briefly within two car lengths on the leader. But Crigler found a burst and opened a 10-car length lead with two laps remaining as yellow flew for Atkinson's spin in turn two. That left a two-lap shootout with Cloyd and Wells right behind Crigler.

Crigler stuck to the low groove with Cloyd moving around the white flag lap. Crigler held on to win by .427 seconds with Wells third, Brandon Baldridge fourth and Jace Parmley fifth.

"I have to thank my dad (Scott). He helps me more than anything and without him this wouldn't be possible," Crigler said. "I have to thank Brandon Baldridge. He goes with me up and down the road."

Cloyd, from Fair Grove, said he ran out of time.

"It was a great race. Congrats to Sawyer," Cloyd said. "I'm sorry to Cole (Wells) for getting into him on the backstretch. A couple of more laps on the top and we might have had a chance."

Also posting feature wins on Horton Supply Company Veterans and Military Appreciation Night were Ryan Middaugh (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds), Kris Jackson (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods) and Mason Beck (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stocks Cars).

Middaugh earns Modifieds win: Ryan Middaugh took command on lap eight and went on to outrun the field for the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified victory.

Middaugh went around the outside of Cutshaw, who had led until that point, in turn two of lap eight. The Fulton driver had a two-second lead over Cutshaw when a lap-11 caution slowed the action.

Middaugh, the 2023 track champion, took it from there to his first Lucas Oil Speedway feature win of the season and eighth overall. He beat season points leader Nic Bidinger by 1.04 seconds.

"Thanks to all the veterans and military," Middaugh in victory lane. "It's been a rough year for us, but it's good to be back on the front stretch of Lucas Oil Speedway."

Cutshaw rolled from the pole to the lead and needed only five laps to establish a two-second margin over Ben Stockton. He was running 1.8 in front of fourth-starting Middaugh when caution flew on lap six as two cars tangled in turn two. Soon after the restart, Middaugh took command.

Cutshaw fell to fifth on the final lap with Stockton grabbing third and Dayton Pursley in fourth.

B-Mods win to Jackson: Kris Jackson of Lebanon still knows his way around Lucas Oil Speedway. The seven-time track champion led all 20 laps to capture the feature win over season points leader Jon Sheets.

Jackson beat Sheets to the lead as the front-row starters took the green and opened a three-quarter second lead by lap five with JC Newell running third. Jackson extended the margin to just over two seconds by lap 11 when caution flew as fourth-running Dawson David spun.

It was more of the same up front after the restart, with Jackson leading Sheets as the lacks clicked away. But Sheets found a fast line on the high side and began to close, cutting Jackson's lead to .325 seconds with five laps left.

Jackson said he smelled some burning oil right before the caution and was "hoping it was from the (lapped) cars in front of me. But after the caution, I didn't have any power steering."

Sheets kept the pressure up coming to the white flag, but Jackson's final circuit was a less tense after Sheets drifted too high in turn two. That gave Jackson an easy drive to a 2.1-second win over Sheets.

Newell finished third with Trevor Drake fourth and Michael Taylor III coming home in fifth.

Beck rolls in USRA Stock Cars: Season points leader Mason Beck of Urbana led all the way to win the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature, holding off Justin Custer by two seconds at the finish. It was Beck's second feature win at the track this season and eighth top-five in nine attempts.

"The rest of the year we ought to be pretty good and I hope we have some more like this," Beck said. "My dad thrashes on this thing. I got in a dirt-bike wreck this week and didn't' know if I could drive with one arm, but he had it set up where I could drive with on finger tonight."

Beck navigated three early cautions to lead from the start, as Custer moved into second on lap seven and the race finally settled into a green-flag rhythm. The winner gradually stretched his lead as action remained caution-free the rest of the way.

Austin held off William Garner for second with Jayden Bears fourth and Christopher Sawyer fifth.
