Sheets uses late heroics for B-Mod win on Night 3 of USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 3, 2025) - Jon Sheets led only one lap, but it was the most-important one. Sheets capitalized on a late-race restart to capture the USRA B-Mod feature win on Night Three of the 12th annual Summit USRA Nationals on Friday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

The reigning USRA national champion out of Nevada, Mo., rallied to score his 16th win of the season.

Other feature winners as a total of 298 cars entered in the five competing divisions were Nic Bidinger (Modifieds), Boone Evans (Stock Cars), Taylor Donlan (Hobby Stocks) and Cale Hancock (Tuners).

From outside of row one, Mitchell Franklin roared to the lead in the B-Nod feature and set the pace and was in front by 1.1 seconds when caution waved on lap three. Franklin got rolling after the restart as Andy Bryant advanced to second with Sheets third.

Bryant caught and passed Franklin headed into turn three as the race hit the halfway mark on lap 10. Two laps later, Sheets supplanted Franklin for second and pulled within a car length of Bryant.

Sheets stalked the leader over the next several laps before pulling alongside on lap 15, but Sheets hit a bump in turn two that cost him nearly a second to the leader. That was all Bryant needed as he opened a 1.7-second lead when caution flew on the white-flag lap as Franklin spun in turn four while running in fourth.

That made for a green-white-checkered shootout and Sheets made the most of it. Sheets - the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod track champion this season at Lucas Oil Speedway - sailed around the high side out of turn four to prevail over Shadren Turner by .420 seconds with Bryant slipping to third.

"I knew Andy's not gonna bobble on top," Sheets said of the final restart. "What a race car we had. We went to work today. I had a lot of people ask 'are you even gonna race because we're top three in the points.' But I've sucked the last two nights and we needed to get a little bit better and we might have hit on something. We were pretty good all over the race track."

Taylor Skauge was fourth and Boone Evans came home in fifth.

Bidinger rolls to Modifieds triumph: Another driving using home-track advantage, Nick Bidinger of Perry, Kan., was a wire-to-wire winner in the 25-lap USRA Modified feature as he beat Keith Foss.

The 2025 Lucas Oil Speedway Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified track champion, set the early pace from his front-row starting spot with Foss advancing from sixth to second by lap four.

Foss, of Winona, Minn., pressured Bidinger over several laps but Bidinger was able to maintain the lead and stretch it out to just under one second by lap 12. Bidinger was in front of Foss by 1.2 seconds with Kyle Brown third when caution flew on lap 15.

Bidinger had a clean restart and quickly regained a one-second command by the 20-lap mark. He was able to bring it home from there, prevailing over Foss by 1.14 seconds.

"It helps us a lot and we came out with a really good base set-up," Bidinger said of what his regular-season success means at Wheatland this week.

Brown was third, Brandon Givens fourth and Tyler Wolff fifth.

Evans goes wire to wire for Stock Cars win: Boone Evans of Bullard, Texas, led all 20 laps and held off Chance Larson by a razor-thin margin at the checkers to take the USRA Stock Cars main event.

"Winning at Lucas Oil Speedway is a dream, for any kid," Evans said. "I grew up watching Late Models on Sundays on MAV-TV from this place. I'd have never thought this would happen."

Evans took the lead at the start and had a 1.5-second command over Chris Dishing four laps in when the first caution waved. Evans had a clean restart while Dishong slipped two positions as Larson advanced into second.

Larson cut into the lead and trailed Evans by just one car length by lap eight. One lap later, another caution slowed the action. The top two resumed the battle after the restart with Evans able to stretch his lead to a half-second with five to go.

Evans' lead was down to a car length coming to the white flag as Larson applied the pressure. Evans was able to hang on and take the win by .136 seconds over Larson with Rodney Schweizer third, Josh Roney fourth and Mitch Hovden in fifth.

Hobby Stocks win goes to Donlan: Taylor Donlan of Decorah, Iowa, took command on lap 12 and held off Dustin Gulbrandson in a thrilling finish of the 18-lap USRA Hobby Stocks feature.

In a battle of front-row starters, Carter Koop led the first lap before Kevin Lacy swapped positions on lap two. By lap five, sixth-starting Gulbrandson began to close in as he moved to second and one lap later, the USRA Hobby Stocks points leader had the lead.

Gulbrandson led until lap 12, when Donlan found speed on the high side to drive around him in turn three to become the race's fourth leader. Gulbrandson was poised to take the lead in the final turns when a spinning car brought out the caution, setting up a green-white-checkers shootout after a restart.

The 18-year-old Donlan was able to hang on to win by .013 seconds as the two nudged each other coming to the finish line.

"I was not happy when I seen that yellow flag," Donlan said. "I just told myself don't mess up and hold on. I knew (Gulbrandson) was gong to be there and I knew I had to get through (turns) one and two before I could get through three and four.

"I kind of lost the right rear and slid up and that's why we made contact. I wish it didn't happen, but I'm also glad it did so I could get the win."

Parker Anderson finished third with Koop fourth and Zac Smith fifth.

Hancock picks up USRA Tuners win: Cale Hancock of Collinsville, Okla., crossed the line second but was elevated to the USRA Tuners victory when apaprent winner Sean Leasure was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.

Leasure, from Mansfield, Texas, came from deep in the pack to cross the finish line first. The 14th-starting Leasure took second away from Hancock on lap seven and then made his way into the lead on lap 11 after Dylan Whitley had led all the way to that point. Leasure had a .870-second lead when caution came out with three laps left.

Leasure had a good restart and held on, finishing 1.3 seconds clear of Hancock. Jason Weber was elevated to second with Whitley third and Steven Bevills fourth.

"We've come in second so many times here over the years," Leasure said after winning for the 13th time in 22 starts this season. "This track's incredible. I love racing here. It's the Diamond of Dirt Tracks and this track is the best of the best in the nation."
