Brandon Davis uses late pass to win a thriller on Night 1 of Show-Me USMTS Shootout at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 7, 2026) - Brandon Davis of Hayfield, Minn., made it four straight Summit United States Modified Touring Series wins, using a pass with two laps remaining to overtake race-long leader Jim Chisholm for a $5,000 payday Friday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Davis' Night 1 victory the 17th annual Slick Mist USMTS Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment was a thriller in which Chisholm, from Osage, Iowa, nearly took it wire-to-wire for 40 laps.

"I just sent it in three and said I'm either going to hit the tack and take off or he's gonna pull away from me," Davis said of the decisive moment, with the white flag in sight.

Other feature winners on the program were (JC Morton) Hermitage Lumber Late Models, (Jon Sheets) Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and Jaylen Wettengel (O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars). All four divisions will be back in action on Saturday night.

Chisholm beat Rodney Sanders to the lead at the drop off the green and set the early pace. Chisholm built a five-car-length lead by lap eight over Sanderson with Brandon Davis settling into third and Tyler Davis fourth.

The event's first caution appeared on lap 13 when Chase Sigg hit the wall in turn three. After the restart, Tyler Davis cruised into second behind Chisholm with Sanders in third.

That's how it stayed until lap 23 when caution No. 2, for a multi-car spin in turn two, slowed the action. Chisholm's lead at the time was .569 seconds over Tyler Davis. Caution was out again two laps after the restart for debris as Chisholm led a 1.2-second lead over Brandon Davis.

Chisholm's lead was down to a car length by lap 29 as Brandon Davis closed in from the inside line. Those two continued to run less than a half-second apart as the laps clicked by, Chisholm night on the track and Davis in the slow groove.

Davis, 35, made a drive out of turn four to pull alongside the leader on lap 37, but was unable to inch past. After repeating the bid for several consecutive laps, Davis was able to made the decisive pass with a dive on lap 39 into turn three.

"Jim knows where I am and he wasn't defending too much, so I just sent it into three," Brandon Davis said.

Davis held on to take the win over Wolff by .283 seconds with Chisholm fading to third on the final lap.

"Brandon Davis, I appreciate running him clean," Wolff said. "I messed up a few times as I'm sure I wasn't very good coming off bottom going to the top. We just stayed after it. We were close. I'm not gonna complain."

Chisholm, 23, was philosophical about barely missing his fourth USMTS win of the season.

"I've got to congratulate Brandon. He's the class of the field right now and it shows," Chisholm said. "I kind of expected him to slide himself and I felt we'd have a chance to do the same. Just misjudged the situation a little bit and came out third."

Sanders was fourth and Tanner Mullens fifth.

There were 45 Modifieds on hand for the USMTS portion. Jim Chisholm set fast qualifying time with a lap of 16.831 seconds.

The Modifieds go after another $5,000-to-win in another 40-lapper on Saturday night.

Morton rolls to Late Models win: Hermitage Lumber Late Model season points leader JC Morton led all but the opening lap in earning the 20-lap victory over Tyler Wolff. It was the second feature win of the season for Morton, from Springfield.

"You started behind Wolff and Robbe Ewing, that's tough," Morton said. "Then me and Cole (Henson) had a slide job and I finally got clear of him. After that, I tried to hit my marks there and just focus on what I needed to do."

After Wolff led the opening lap, Morton found momentum off turn four on lap two and shot to the lead over Cole Henson. A lap later, Wolff was back into second, but not before Morton had nearly a one-second lead.

Morton, who started fourth, and Wolff had separated from the field by nearly three seconds when caution slowed the action on lap 11 when third-running Henson spun to a stop on the front straightaway.

Morton retained the lead after the restart with Dayton Pursley falling in behind Wolff as the laps dwindled. Morton held on to take the win by 1.06 seconds over Wolff with Pursley third, Tucker Cox fourth and Kaeden Cornell fifth.

"That dang yellow came out and I was cussing, but it's all good," Morton said. "It probably got me out of them lapped cars and calmed me down a little bit."

Sheets rolls late in B Mods: Jon Sheets of Nevada took the lead on lap 14 and led the final seven circuits to beat JC Morton in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod main event.

Front-row starters Chad Clancy and Morton ran 1-2 from the start with fifth-starting Sheets climbing to third by lap eight. Sheets took over second on lap 13 and then. Went to the lead the next time around to complete lap 14.

Sheets led by .597 seconds when the race's first caution flew with five to go. Fourth-running Cayden Stacye was unable to avoid hitting the lapped car that spun and the incident took Stacye out of contention for a top-five finish.

Sheets jumped to the night groove and stayed there after the restart, rolling to a 2.2-second margin over Morton at the checkers.

"It's always cool racing with Chad and JC and them guys. We've raced together for years," said Sheets, who noted that he was a bit worried after grazing a tractor tire in turn two. "The car got tight afterward. The car was still really good. It was really, really good before that."

Clancy finished third with Ryan Gillmore fourth and Tyler Potter fifth.

Stock Cars win to Wettengel: Eighth-starting Jaylen Wettengel of Topeka, Kan., took the lead with five laps to go and held on a frantic battle among multiple cars at the ront of the O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars feature.

Wettengel took the lead from Garner on lap 15, coming out of turn four after Garner had led all but one of the first 14 laps.

Schweizer took over second a lap later and was a half-second behind Wettengel when caution flew with two remaining. Wettengel was able to hold on to earn the victory, beating Schweizer by .352 seconds.

"That was a blast," Wettengel said. "Multi-lane track, top to bottom. Even the USMTS feature was fun to watch. Hopefully that topped it. But it was fun. It was good, hard racing."

Wiliam Garner was third with Mason Beck fourth and Grayson McKiney fifth.

Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday night hot laps at 6:30 and opening ceremonies to follow.
