- Hinnershitz Legacy Honored Friday At Williams Grove
Mechanicsburg - Friday's sprint car show at Williams Grove Speedway will honor its original winner. He was the first. He had one of the most recognizable names in motorsports history dating back to the 1930s. On tap at Williams Grove on Friday will be the annual Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial Spring Classic, honoring the late, great racer from Oley that holds the distinction of winning the first ever race held at the brand new Williams Grove Speedway back on Sunday, May 21, 1939. Hinnershitz won the race in what was called a "hard and heady" event to best the famed Joie Chitwood. Hinnershitz's death in 1999 left behind an auto-racing legacy worthy of note by any standards. During his 30-year career spanning 1930-1960, "The Fying Dutchman," as he was known, amassed seven AAA/USAC Eastern Big Car Championships, taking titles in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955, 1956 and in 1959. He had garnered 103 total AAA/USAC feature wins with 19 taking place at Williams Grove. Hinnershitz set 43 AAA track records during his tenure and would compete in three Indianapolis 500s.At the time of his death, the 87-year old was ranked second behind Steve Kinser on the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame's Top Sprint Car Drivers of All Time list. Back in 1939, when Hinnershitz passed Chitwood for the lead in that maiden race at Williams Grove, the duel was billed as "one of the most thrilling bits of driving ever witnessed on a Pennsylvania speedway." It was said that when Hinnershitz passed Chitwood, "the Big Chief was met with acclaim from the crowd." And Williams Grove will bestow even more worthy acclaim in the Big Chief's honor this Friday night. Adult general admission for the April 18 racing program is set at $25 with students ages 13-20 admitted for just $10. Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for FREE at Williams Grove Speedway. - SANDERS HOLDS OFF HOLMES TO CLAIM EPIC NARC MINI GOLD CUP THRILLER AT CHICO
(4/12/25 - Andrew Kunas) Chico, CA ... Fans at Silver Dollar Speedway were treated to a NARC 410 Sprint Car thriller and instant classic on Saturday night, as Justin Sanders fended off heavy traffic and a determined Tanner Holmes to win the Mini Gold Cup and a $10,000 payday. Sanders, who led the final 19 laps of the 40-lap race after taking the lead from Tim Kaeding, encountered slower traffic in the closing laps, allowing Holmes to close in rapidly. On the final lap, in the second turn of the quarter-mile bullring, Sanders drifted up as he tried to navigate around slower cars with Holmes getting a run around the top. The two cars making light contact with Sanders getting into the loose clay at the top, allowing Holmes to move by. Holmes, however, then had to deal with the slower cars, who were running in his preferred top and middle lines through the final two corners. Holmes made contact with one while Sanders, who favored the very bottom on that end of the racetrack, used it to get back by Holmes off of turn four to steal the win aboard the Yuba Sutter Aviation sponsored Mittry Motorsports No. 2x Fisher-powered Maxim. This finish sent the Silver Dollar Speedway crowd into a frenzy. "I kind of floated up," explained Sanders. "I knew that was the 21 car was coming. That motor rips so I could hear it behind me. Tanner got by me, and I can't believe he didn't run the bottom in three and four, and maybe that won us the race. He was running the middle, maybe to block a slider. We're happy to get this win. They're so hard to come by. We had a great car." Despite contact with the slower car, Holmes finished second aboard the American Rock & Rent sponsored Tarlton Motorsports No. 21 Kistler-powered Maxim and the driver from Jacksonville, Oregon received approval from the fans for his late efforts. "It felt like all weekend we were searching and searching," said Holmes, "and finally we put together a great second half." "I just made a mistake on my part (at the end)," Holmes continued. "If I could do it over, I'd do it over, but I'm proud of these 21 guys and we were right there at the end." Kaleb Montgomery raced in the Top 10 throughout the headliner and made late moves to get on the podium aboard the Hansen Machine sponsored McColloch Racing No. 17 Don Ott-powered Maxim. He made a late race pass for third around D.J. Netto. Netto, who won the season opening race at Stockton, ran as high as second before finishing fourth in the Penny Newman Grain sponsored Netto Ag No. 88N Rider-powered KPC. Tyler Thompson finished fifth aboard the HAM Construction sponsored Main Motorsports No. 35km Kistler-powered Maxim. Tanner Carrick, Shane Golobic, Tim Kaeding, Sean Becker, and Ryan Bernal rounded out the Top 10. Bernal earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger nod, moving up seven positions to finish tenth. Bud Kaeding won the Winters Performance Last Chance Qualifier. Heat races were claimed by Montgomery, Holmes, Netto and Landon Brooks. Tyler Thompson set overall fast time in qualifying with a 11.698 second lap around the ¼-mile clay oval. - O'Neal completes a sweep of 12th annual Spring Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (April 12, 2025) - Hudson O'Neal came to south-central Missouri in a self-proclaimed slump, winless and often non-competitive for more than two months. O'Neal left Lucas Oil Speedway with a momentum-turning sweep of the 12th annual Spring Nationals Presented by Iconic Apparel. The Martinsville, Ind., driver chased down race-long leader Brandon Overton on lap 43 and turned Night Two of the Spring Nationals into a rout from there, claiming the $20,000 prize in the unsanctioned feature for Open Late Models. After working to make the pass on Overton for several laps, O'Neal finally took over the top spot and went on to win by 3.5 seconds. The triumph, in his SSI Motorsports Longhorn chassis, was worth nearly triple his prize for Friday's $7,000 feature win. "I had a good race car again tonight," said O'Neal, the 2021 Show-Me 100 winner. "We didn't start on the front row, which was scary for a little bit at the beginning of the race. We shuffled back pretty good there, but thanks to all my guys. "Hopefully this is a good sign for the months to come. I've loved coming to this place since I was little." Overton used the outside line to earn the early lead with Tony Jackson Jr., following him from the outside of row two and Jonathan Davenport settling for third after one lap. That's when Jace Parmley rolled to a stop in turn one to bring out a quick caution. As action resumed, Davenport cruised around Jackson and began pursuit of Overton who opened a 1.3-second lead by lap five. Overton caught lapped cars by lap 13 as the race settled into a long green-flag run. Davenport took advantage to whittle the lead to under one second with O'Neal about another second back in third. Billy Moyer slowed on the front stretch of lap 22, bringing out the event's second caution and wiping out Overton's rebuilt-lead, which had expanded to 1.8 seconds. The restart saw Overton break away and open a 1.3-second lead by lap 26 when the race's third caution came out after Eli Ross spun in turn four. O'Neal took advantage of a good start from the inside on the restart to edge past Davenport for second with Marlar in fourth. "I was just lucky, I got to going through some lapped cars there and one of them got a really good run off the bottom," O'Neal said. "I thought, 'Man, if lapped cars are getting around off the bottom, then I think I can." O'Neal continued to dive low into the turns and started to cut into Overton's lead and was on his backside by lap 32. He pulled alongside several laps in a row, but was unable to make the pass out of turn four as the duo separated from Davenport and Marlar by two seconds. O'Neal finally made the inside pass for the lead out of turn four on lap 43, supplanting the race-long pacesetter. He worked through lapped traffic, was able to separate himself by one second by lap 48. As action remained caution-free the rest of the way, the 2021 Show-Me 100 winner poured it on and beat Overton, of Evans, Ga., by 3.56 seconds. "It's a hell of a lot better than we've been," Overton said of his finish, one spot better than Friday. "Just hats off to my crew. Everybody's been working really hard. We're making gains at it. "Good job by Hudson, he did a hell of a job. We're right there. I feel good about it." Marlar won the battle with Davenport in the final laps for third with Cade Dillard capturing fifth. "Jonathan and I was having a really good race there," Marlar said. "He kept stepping out trying to make some passes and I kind of slipped under him. It was a good race and I had a lot of fun out there. I'm glad to be on the podium." Forty entries were on hand for Night Two of the event, the only Lucas Oil Speedway action for Open Late Models prior to the 33rd annual Show-Me 100 Presented by Missouri Division of Tourism, May 22-24. "I've loved coming to this place since I was little," the 24-year-old O'Neal, whose father Don also was a Show-Me 100 winner, said when asked about returning for the $75,000-to-win Show-Me in just six weeks. "We're so, so excited to come back here. The tire rule is going to be a little bit different, but hopefully the stuff we learned this week will help us then." Davenport had the night's fastest qualifying lap with a time of 15.560 out of Group 1. Brandon Overton paced Group 2 at 16.118. Super Stocks win goes to Miller: Donnie Miller of West Plains won a thriller in the Hickamo Super Stocks feature, taking home the $1,000 prize. Miller took the lead on lap two from fellow front-row starter Tim Brown, lost it back to Brown on lap seven and regained it the next time around. Those two were separated by a quarter second when the first caution slow things on lap 10. Brown worked the inside after the restart to pull alongside Miller with Kyle Davis lurking right behind. Brown finally edged his way back into the lead coming to the start-finish line on lap 15 - but Miller took it back the next time around. A lap-17 caution set up a shootout for the win between the top three, which were separated by less than a quarter second. Miller won the sprint to the end, beating Davis by .492 seconds with Brown right behind. Blaine Ewing captured fourth with Derek Brown fifth. Throw in sixth-place Tony Anglin and the top half-dozen were separated by just under two seconds. "It was an awesome run. It seems like something always bites us here, but it didn't tonight," Miller said. "Any time I've been lucky enough to win $1,000 in a race car, I always get down on my knees on the front stretch and praise the Lord." Eickleberry picks up SMVR win: Chad Eickleberry of Warrensburg rallied from a 10th-starting position to win the Show-Me Vintage Racers feature, beating Owen Evinger by just under one second. While he has more than 100 career wins, Eickleberry said this one was special. "I always feel like the bridesmaid here. Every time I'm here, this is the only track I've raced at that I haven't won," Eickleberry said. Third-starting Dan Schmidt rolled into the lead on lap two, overtaking lap-one leader Beth Martin. By lap five, David Isaacs had moved from 11th to second and was closing in on Schmidt when the event's fourth caution flew on lap seven. A couple of laps after the restart, Eickleberry took over second from Isaacs with Damon Clevenger advancing into fourth. Eickleberry took the lead on lap 12 on another restart and held on over the final three laps to beat Evinger, who started 19th, by .827 seconds. Clevenger, Friday's feature winner, placed third with Isaacs finishing fourth and Schmidt fifth. - Seth Standley strikes for first Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo win Friday
Watsonville, CA…Yuba City's Seth Standley executed an early pass of Kurt Nelson and cruised away to score his first career Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo triumph on opening night. He was joined in victory lane Friday by Robert Marsh with the IMCA Modifieds, Bo Crebs with the IMCA Sport Mods and Joshua Silva with the Four Bangers. Race fans were treated to excellent racing all night long during a smoothly run event on the pristinely prepared Watsonville bullring. Standley was aboard his familiar Salco Better Energy/ Swimming Pool Perfections No. 25 mount and made a great rebound after getting upside down the previous week during a heat race in Placerville. "It feels great to get my first ever Sprint Car win tonight here at Ocean Speedway," he commented on the front stretch. "We've been close in the past and had one thing or another take it away. I really want to thank my family and my entire team for all their hard work in getting me up here. To go from that heat race flip in Pville last week to a win in Watsonville is pretty surreal." Former Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo champion Kurt Nelson snagged the early lead after winning the Gizdich Ranch Dash. Standley wasted little time however and showed his muscle by carving his way down low to take over the point after a few laps. Once out front Standley had his way with things and went on to cross under the Ed Entz checkered flag for the win over Nelson, last year's Ocean champ Caleb Debem, Jeremy Chisum and Jason Chisum. Jake Haulot began the evening by blistering the quarter mile for fast time, clocking an 11.083 during time trials. The 25-lap IMCA Modified finale featured a fantastic race that saw Robert Marsh of Salinas end up in victory lane. Jonathan Hagio of Prunedale took the lead at the waving of the green flag and set a fast pace over the early stages. Side by side racing and battles were seen all over the track for the Modifieds during their main event. Marsh reeled in Hagio and hounded his rear before taking command on lap number eight. Marsh proceeded to pull away but had to run some perfect laps towards the end as Bobby Hogge closed. The Salinas legend moved into second with six laps left and cut down a wide margin between the pair. Hogge would run out of time though as Marsh claimed the win by just over half a second. Hogge, Jim Pettit II, Jacob Mallet Jr. and Cody Burke rounded out the top five. The IMCA Sport Mods also provided an ultra-entertaining 20-lap main event on Friday. The intense feature saw Jim DiGiovanni lead the opening lap, until Trent Golden of Pittsburgh got by one circuit later. The well-prepared surface allowed the Sport Mods to utilize every inch of the Ocean Speedway bullring. With cars running high and low, Yreka driver Bo Crebs went to work on the leader and the duo proceeded to put on an excellent battle for the top spot. Golden and Crebs fought hard back and forth but showcased some clean racing in a fabulous tussle for the lead. Crebs took over for good on lap 13 and went on to take his initial Ocean Speedway win. "Captain Chaos" and opening night winner Danny Wagner came home second followed by Trevor Clymens, Rob Gallaher and Golden in the top five. The Four Bangers certainly gave fans their monies worth as well with a final lap photo finish at the line. Amaya Flower jumped out front right off the bat but felt pressure from Tony Gullo and a host of others. The 15-lap race had its share of excitement with the top four drivers racing closely together at times. TJ Santos and Joshua Silva hounded Flower over the waning circuits as the crowd came to its feet. Silva blasted by Santos and then moved alongside Flower coming down to the checkered. In a darn near dead heat, Silva was able to nip Flower at the scoring loop for the dramatic triumph. Santos, Gullo and Kate Beardsley completed the top five. Ocean Speedway will be dark this coming week for Easter, before resuming action with Little League Night at the Races on Friday April 25th. The Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo headline the loaded card. - O'Neal tops Davenport on Night One of 12th annual Spring Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (April 11, 2025) - Hudson O'Neal emerged from an early duel with Jonathan Davenport and went on to prevail on Friday night at Lucas Oil Speedway, capturing Night One of the 12th annual Spring Nationals Presented by Iconic Apparel. The Martinsville, Ind., driver pocketed $7,000 for the unsanctioned Open Late Model victory, beating Davenport by two seconds in a battle of former Show-Me 100 winners. A total of 43 Late Models checked into the pits for Night One. The stakes are higher on Saturday night with $20,000 going to the winner of a 60-lap main event. O'Neal started inside of Davenport on row one of Friday's 40-lapper and Davenport was credited with the lead by a few feet at the conclusion of the opening circuit. O'Neal used the inside line to inch in front the next time around and never surrendered the top spot the rest of the way. "It's been a rocky start to the season," O'Neal said in victory lane, "but being able to hire Jason Durham and Todd Burns ... everybody has done a great job. They've given me a great crew that's behind and they've worked their tails off. I appreciate all my guys." O'Neal, 23, drives for Burns' SSI Motorsports, with Durham named the new crew chief earlier this season. The team's last win was s. 28, but it has made obvious gains with the impressive run at the home of the Show-Me 100. Davenport, of Blairsville, Ga., said he got into O'Neal slightly going into turn three in the early going as he tried to regain the lead, but fortunately both cars came away unscathed by the close shave that left a small racing stripe on the side of his car. "He was really good, for sure," Davenport said of O'Neal. "I couldn't believe the bottom was that good when we first took off. Once he did get by me, I could move into his lane and he was still a little better than we was. "I'm just gonna go back and we're gonna make us a drink and think about this." O'Neal opened a 1.3-second lead over Davenport by lap eight as lapped traffic began to play a factor. O'Neal maneuvered through the slower cars, though Davenport began to cut into the margin a bit by lap 15. The difference was back to 1.5 seconds at the halfway mark as the action remained caution-free. Brandon Overton advanced to third by that point with Mike Marlar fourth. O'Neal narrowly avoided a disaster on lap 28 when Scott Crigler suddenly slowed, right in front of him coming off turn two. O'Neal yanked to the outside of Crigler in time to avoid contact, but a caution flew as Crigler's car limped to the edge of he infield before rolling to a stop. The caution wiped out a 2.4-second lead and gave Davenport's chances life with 12 laps remaining. Davenport opted to start outside of turn two with Overton to the inside, but O'Neal nailed the restart and needed just three laps to open a 1.2-second lead. With a clear track ahead, O'Neal hit his marks from there as action remained under green. The 2021 Show-Me 100 winner beat Davenport, the reigning Show-Me 100 champ, by 2.074 seconds. "This feels like so much bigger than $7,000 for us," O'Neal said. "We're excited about the future. We've always enjoyed coming here. The race track was pretty good and we were able to put on a good show. "I was a little nervous about when J.D. got the start on me at the beginning. He's a tough one whenever he gets out front. We were able to find the bottom a little earlier than those guys and were able to work back by him." Added Davenport: "The race track was awesome. I think it would have been even better the longer we went. Hats off to the track crew and thanks to my guys, they gave me another great race car." Overton was about one second behind Davenport for third with Marlar fourth and Mason Oberkramer fifth after starting 10th. The top two were speedy from the start of the night. O'Neal set the fast overall qualifying time with a lap of 15.434 in Group 2. Davenport had quick time in Group 1 at 15.549. Super Stocks win to Hays: Jared Hays of Jonesboro, Ark., captured the $650 first prize in the Hickamo Super Stocks, beating Brian Worley by just over one second in the 20-lap feature. The sixth-starting Hays worked his way into the lead on lap five, getting around pole-starting J.T. Carroll who led the first four circuits. Hays had a 3.3-second lead over Tony Anglin when a caution flew on lap 13. He handled the restart and drove away to win by 1.1 seconds over Brian Worley with Kyle David third, time Brown fourth and Carroll fifth. "This one's been a long time coming here. We've been short so many times and we finally got the win here," Hays said in victory lane. The Super Stocks will run for $1,000-to-win on Saturday. Clevenger wins SMVR feature: Seventh-starting Damon Clevenger of Parkville took command in the early stages and rolled to the Show-Me Vintage Racers feature win. Clevenger passed Mickie Cook on the outside heading into turn three to take over the lead on lap five. Clevenger, in his 1939 Chevy Sedan, set sail from there and breezed over the final 10 laps to beat Chad Eickleberry by a 5.9-second margin at the finish. David Isaacs finished third with John Martin fourth and Bryant Moyer fifth. "We love having the opportunity to race at Lucas Oil Speedway," Clevenger said after winning a feature at the track for a third straight year. - BRODY ROA BACK ON ONE OF HIS BEST TRACKS, CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY
(Cypress, CA, April 10, 2025) When the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit the Central Arizona Speedway this Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, Brody Roa, the 2023 series champion, will be one of the favorites to visit victory circle. Dating back to 2019, the Garden Grove, California-based racing star has started seven races on the Pinal County oval and has recorded one win, three runner-up results, a third, one fourth, and one fifth-place finish. Roa initially had no plans of racing this weekend. That is, he had no plans until Arizona-based car owner Chris Bonneau sent him a text offering to drive his car. Thinking back on the only time the two had teamed up in the past, it took Roa about half a second to say, "yes," to the offer. In March of last year, Bonneau and Roa teamed up for a race at Perris Auto Speedway. Roa started the 30-lap A main in 10th and by the end of the 24th lap, he had commandeered the lead and was pulling away from the pack. However, less than two laps later, he dramatically slowed and stopped with a flat tire. The car was rushed back to the work area for a tire change, and when the crew pulled the wheel disk off, a freak deal was discovered. The two plastic bleeder valve fittings in the right rear had snapped off. The crew changed the wheel and sent Roa back to the battlefield. Astonishingly, he quickly started passing cars and drove all the way back to fourth in just four laps. "That was probably one of the best cars on the night I have ever had," Roa enthusiastically remembered. "We qualified halfway decent and worked on the setup through the heat race. We changed the shock package on it for the feature, and it lit off. We started pretty deep. That thing was so comfortable, I was sliding two cars at a time. It was so good off the corner, down the straight, and getting in. I am so excited getting back into it this week." In 2019, Roa not only competed in USAC/CRA, but he also raced full-time in the USAC Southwest series. In fact, he won the Southwest title. In four trips to the Central Arizona Speedway that year, he recorded two second-place finishes, a third, and a fourth. In September of 2020, just prior to the birth of daughter Addison, Roa made his debut in the Jason May #8M and won the CAS main at Central Arizona. Since then, he has only raced at the track two times. Those appearances came at the ASCS/CAS shows to kick off the season on back-to-back nights in February of 2022. He notched a second and a fifth in that trip across the desert. Last week, Roa drove his own #91R at Perris. He qualified 10th in the 24-car field with a lap of 16.861. After a third-place finish in his 10-lap heat, "The Pride of Garden Grove" started 10th in the 30-lap main. Just like his first race of the year five weeks earlier at Perris, he moved forward. This time he ended up sixth. This Friday and Saturday at the Central Arizona Speedway, gates will open at 5:00 with racing at 7:00 each night. The track is located on the Pinal County Fairgrounds at 512 S 11 Mile Corner Road. Adult tickets for the shows are $25.00 each night. Active military and seniors get in for $20.00. For young adults ages 12-17, it is $15.00. Kids 11 and under are free. For more information visit the track website at https://www.centralazraceway.com/ or call the track office at 602-292-7607. For those who cannot make it to the track, both nights of action will be shown live on Flo Racing. Roa would like to thank his 2025 sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, Burris Racing, ALR Virtual Services, Caltrol, Molecule, and Wilwood Disc Brakes. If you would like to be a marketing partner with the team in 2025, contact Roa using the information at the top of this release. - AFTER AN EIGHTH AT PERRIS, TAFOYA RETURNS TO CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2019
(Chino, CA, April 10, 2025) This Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will compete with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars on a track he has not raced on since 2019. The track is the Central Arizona Speedway, and the last time he was there, he was competing for Rookie of the Year with the now-defunct USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series. This week's races come hot on the heels of Tafoya's eighth-place finish last week in the USAC/CRA main event at Perris Auto Speedway. A lot has changed since Tafoya was last at the track, which is located about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. Not only the racing surface, but the entire facility has had a major makeover since then. As was previously stated, he was running for the USAC Southwest Series Rookie of the Year award in 2019. He not only won that, but he also captured the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award the same season. Thus, he has good memories of the facility. "I ran there one time with the Southwest Series when I was trying to get the Rookie of the Year in 2019," Tafoya remembered. "I had to go to one of the races over there to stay in points. I won a heat race by about half a track. I am not sure exactly where I finished in the main, but I think I was close to the top five." Tafoya recently viewed some of the High Limit Sprint Car Series race at the track located on the Pinal County Fairgrounds. He planned on watching some more before heading to the "Copper State." "From what I remember it was big and fast," Tafoya enthused. "So, that sounds good to me. I am on a different chassis now. I should have a decent base. We just have to make decent calls throughout the night." Last Saturday night, Tafoya raced close to his Chino Hills, California, home at Perris Auto Speedway. It was with the same USAC/CRA Series that he is competing with this weekend. Twenty-four cars showed up for the night of racing and 27-year-old Tafoya qualified sixth fastest at 16.755. Being the sixth fastest qualifier and with the way the first two heats finished, meant that Tafoya was a lock to start on the pole for the main if he placed in the top five of his heat. Starting fifth in the 10-lapper, Tafoya quickly advanced to second, and it looked like he was going to secure the pole for the main. However, that was not to be. "I knew I had to get fifth or better to start pole (in the main)," Tafoya offered. "I got to second quickly, like within two laps. I was running there, and I had the valve stem shoot out of the left rear tire. That ran it out of air, and then it popped it off the bead." Unfortunately, the flat knocked Tafoya from second in the heat to last. And it knocked him off the pole for the main. Instead of starting at the head of the pack, he had to roll off inside row four. The stacked field did not disappoint the fans as the drivers put on the usual Perris Auto Speedway "war." Tafoya looked good in the beautiful #51T and battled throughout the race, finishing eighth. "I think car-wise and driver-wise, that is the closest I have been in a while," Tafoya said of the race. "It was definitely a positive. The setup felt good. I was pretty happy with how it went. I was just a little bit off. A lot of guys were going fast, so it was a lot different starting seventh than it would have been starting on the pole." Central Arizona Speedway is located in Casa Grande on the Pinal County Fairgrounds at 512 S 11 Mile Corner Road. Adult tickets for the shows are $25.00 each night. Active military and seniors get in for $20.00. For young adults ages 12-17, it is $15.00. Kids 11 and under are free. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. each night with racing at 7:00. For more information visit the track website at https://www.centralazraceway.com/ or call the track office at 602-292-7607. For fans who cannot make it to Arizona, both nights will be shown live on Flo Racing. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its 2025 racing endeavors. - Rain Cancels Williams Grove April 11, Double Sprint Mains Next Week
Mechanicsburg -Saturated grounds, cold temperatures and the expectation for significant rain during the second half of Friday has forced Williams Grove Speedway officials to cancel the April 11 racing program. The make-up opening night 410 sprint car feature that was to be completed on April 11 will now be run as part of the April 18 Tommy Hinnershitz Classic at the track. Paying $5,500 to win, the race will be restarted with five laps complete and Matt Campbell at the point over Anthony Macri. The regularly slated Tommy Classic for 410 sprints presented by the Harz family on April 18 will pay $8,088 to win, setting up the possibility of a one-night sweep by one driver worth nearly $13,600. April 18 will also be Kids Easter Night at Williams Grove with the first 150 youth ages 12 and under entering the frontstretch admission gates receiving a FREE chocolate Easter Bunny courtesy of Hoseheads.com and J & S Classics. - High School Dirt Racing in Ohio
Earning a varsity letter in highschool is something a lot of kids experience. Usually it's earned in Football, Band, Cross Country, Basketball, etc. Now, students in Southern Ohio have a chance to earn a varsity letter in dirt track racing. Yes, you read that right. A varsity letter in dirt track racing. Atomic Speedway, just south of Chillicothe, Ohio is working on the SMART Mod program, which will give high school students access to everything related to dirt track racing. The kicker? They'll be going up against other local high schools for all the bragging rights in what is a first-of-its-kind program in the United States. "For a couple years now, this idea has been blossoming," said Charlie Vest, Owner of Atomic Speedway. "My cousin is a superintendent, so I've been running liability ideas off of him. Finally, we got to the point where we had a plan and this program came together. Everybody who races knows that you learn every day; you're always trying to get faster, being creative with your setups. So why wouldn't we teach these kids early on that regardless of what you're doing in life, you're always going to be learning something?" Vest has wanted to get the kids involved in racing in Southern Ohio since buying Atomic Speedway a few years ago. He has plans to build a kids track behind the 3/8ths mile oval to give the kids a place to race. In most areas, kids have decent access to go-kart tracks or quarter midget tracks, but it's more of an anomaly in Southern Ohio. Giving these kids, the future of the sport, an opportunity to learn about racing and be involved in racing-behind the wheel of a race car or not- is one of the main goals of the SMART Mod program. What is the SMART Mod Program? Atomic Speedway has purchased a handful of Sport Mod cars, which will be housed in local racers shops, detuned, and with all the top-notch safety features, including STIDA Insurance. The cars are all built the same with the same motors, tires, and suspension components, so no school has a clear-cut advantage. Every student that is interested in being on the team will be able to hop in the iRacing simulator, where Charlie will help determine, based off of lap times, who will be on the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Reserve teams. The students with the best lap times will be eligible to be the primary driver, or the reserve driver. The unique part is, even if a student is on the team for PR or design purposes, they still get simulator time, and could end up behind the wheel of the actual car. Charlie is working directly with schools to develop a curriculum that benefits both the students, and the schools. Charlie has also talked to the University of Northwestern Ohio [UNOH], a college in Lima, Ohio well-known for its motorsports programs and operation of Limaland Motorsports Park, to see what UNOH is looking for in high school students coming to their programs to better suit everyone's needs. "As this came together, the competition at the track became less important, and the education became way more important. Not only do we want kids to learn, we want them to understand how many jobs there are in the racing industry as a whole. My crew chief that I had when I had my [Nascar] Truck team is now the head shock guy at 23XI [Nascar Cup Team]. We were talking in Charlotte, and he had these kids working on the computer simulator, and you have all these departments. Almost everything that you can imagine if you want to work professionally, if you're an artist, a computer geek, an engineer, a tradesman, it doesn't matter what you are, if you want to be in the racing industry, you can do it," Vest said. "That's what spawned this idea. We're going to show these kids that even on a weekly racing deal, that even with a Sport Mod, there's a place where you fit. You want to design race cars? You fit. You want to understand engineering and the physics of the car and the math of the setup? You fit. There's so many cool ways to participate in racing. That's where the gears really started turning for this program. The program is driven more by the education than the competition," Vest continued. "Once we can get the kids to understand that you're an artist, and you're a part of this team, and you're going to design the race car, you're going to design the press releases, or the print, or the social media. There are so many avenues to be a part of it and grow as you further your education. All the facets coming together has been awesome. The welding kids, the hospitality kids, you have your EMS and police officers, and it's all relevant. Now, we aren't just talking about race cars, we're talking about race tracks. Now we have all these kids that want to do AV, and now FloRacing is intrigued because it's up their alley. I've really just taken racing as something really cool and fun to do, and we're showing how racing can be involved in almost any career path for you." Once the SMART Mod program gets to the point of racing, they'll take to the track on Wednesday nights, with each school potentially having a varsity, junior varsity, and reserve team, with each team having a primary and reserve driver. If the primary driver wins one night, then the reserve driver takes the wheel the next race night. They'll compete for points as if it were a regular division at Atomic Speedway, and a champion will be crowned at the Speedway's banquet in the off-season, just like the 410, late model, modified or sport mod teams. There are some hurdles though. As Charlie said in his interview, "The schools are a little timid, and the insurance guys are jerks." Then, Charlie said something that makes a lot of sense about what this program is about, and how racers are as a whole: "I told them, put them on my insurance, I don't care. We're racers, we understand the liability, and most people don't, because they don't understand racing. I can promise you, that based on these risk assessments, racing is half as risky as gymnastics. These kids aren't going to be going fast. I could probably pass them in my Jeep. If I could just get these people to the track, put them in a car, and show them what they're going to do, I could calm them all down and get them to understand. It's racing, and it seems dangerous and on the edge, and I get it, but these aren't 410 sprint cars, they're sport mods." For Vest and company though, the obstacles are just a minor blip on the radar when it comes to the overall goals for the SMART Mod program. The goals extend beyond Atomic Speedway, Southern Ohio, and Ohio as a whole. Vest envisions this kind of program across the nation, and as a program that can convene to crown a state champion and even a national champion. But that's the competition side, and as Charlie said, the program is driven more by the education than the competition. "Year one, I just want to get the damn thing off the ground and I want to get the kids involved," Vest started in about his goals. "I want a lot of excitement and I want to get the kids that have disengaged, reengaged in the education system. If we can get them to understand that it's not just the jocks or the or the smart kids that can excel in education. I want the artsy kids that would never talk to the welding kids and appreciate what each one does. That's something you don't learn until you're older." Vest pointed out an example of the race car driver appreciating what the wrap-designer does, because someone may be able to drive the wheels off of a race car, but they can't draw a stickman to save their life. "I want to get it off the ground and have a truly successful and safe year one. I'd like to grow it and have five schools in ten states in the next year or two. I'd love to have statewide races and a national championship and have this program become a standard and viable sport once we get the schools to come to the fact that racing isn't as dangerous and isn't everything that they think it is. It gets more people involved because it isn't a strict 'you have to be an athlete or have to be this or that' to succeed. Racing has a much bigger place at the table than where it does right now." "It's about being there, being part of the deal, and understanding that you want that team environment. You want them to understand that when a quarter panel gets ripped off, or the front end gets tore up, that it takes four or five guys or girls thrashing to get that car back out," Vest said. The local race teams have also volunteered to help out with this program, which was one of the gaps Vest needed to fill as he has brought this idea to life. The SMART Mod program will have a mentorship aspect to it, and the cars will stay at the local teams shops. The racers will mentor the schools to teach them the racing side, and it doesn't stop there. Atomic's graphic designer for their banners will be in charge of the creative aspects of the program and can help show the kids how certain things are done, and why certain things are taught in school. He can show the students his graphic design shop and show the students how the basics are applied in his shop. There are a lot of moving parts in this project, but these moving parts are all working towards a common goal promoting racing and getting more kids involved in racing. A big, remarkable step that Atomic Speedway owner Charlie Vest is taking towards this goal is making this program a template, so that any track in the nation can plug in this program and race. Charlie is doing the leg work and figuring out how to answer the tough questions from the schools and insurance companies, and trying to make this program as accessible as possible, at no cost. "My goal was to get these companies like My Race Pass involved and a part of this templating, so I can build this structure into something like My Race Pass, so all of the formalities of this process and procedure are built in, and say when Skyline Speedway wants to do this down near Athens, Ohio, I can give them the package on My Race Pass and it has all the structure you need for a race night," said Vest. "By the way, we've done the hard work with the insurance companies, and have done the legwork with why they're going to tell you no, and what their excuses are for this and what excuses are for that. Here's your packet of information, so that when you go before a school board or a superintendent, you have everything you're going to need; the structure of the creative arts program, the things you're going to want to get the kids to understand and entice them to design. As we work through this platform this year, we'll have some key points we can put together and pass on to the other tracks. We can give them the entire program, all you have to do is plug this in at your racetrack and have a representative go out and talk to the schools. Here is your platform, here is the template, here is the structure, the education. UNOH is backing it, everybody's behind it, they believe in the curriculum and in what we're doing. It takes all of the hard parts that we've fought the last six months for away. All we have to do is hand them some three ring binders, tell them that Atomic has done this and no kids were hurt. Here are some pictures, here are some videos, here are some grants you can get. It's a great deal because the schools don't get charged," continued Vest "That's the template that we're building. I could call Husets and say 'Hey, you have to do this, it's awesome,' and they can go to ten schools and they have the template and they can plug and play. When somebody says something like 'We've been dealing with these insurance companies,' we can show them where that's been addressed and move on. We're doing the hard work, because I really, really want racing to be more of the norm when we start talking about education. We can do it because if we build the cars right and do it right, they're safe." The SMART Mod program is a very ambitious program, but one thing I learned during the interview with Charlie Vest is that he has thought about everything that could pertain to this. I had plenty of follow-up questions about curriculum or local team involvement that he answered before I could even ask. There hasn't been a stone left unturned with this program, and it is being put together for all the right reasons. As people's interests and motivations change, racing has to find a way to keep their place at the table, and as Charlie said, earn the bigger spot that racing deserves. That means getting students, parents, teachers, administrators and even state government officials involved. Get them involved to see what racing truly is; not the dangerous crashes and near-misses we see in compilations on YouTube or TikTok, but all the hard work, education, teamwork, and camaraderie between so many different facets of life to get a local race team to the track every Friday and Saturday night.
