- Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Sanders brings latest USMTS title pursuit to Show-Me Shootout
WHEATLAND, MO. (July 30, 2025) - Rodney Sanders' five United States Modified Touring Series championships stand above anyone else. A sixth is starting to come into focus entering this weekend's 16th annual USMTS Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment at Lucas Oil Speedway. But you won't catch the 35-year-old from Happy, Texas, sitting around and calculating points or a specific strategy as he attempts to complete the six pack. This weekend's doubleheader will be business as usual. "It would be great," Sanders said of what a sixth title would mean. "I know it's gonna be tough to finish it out, but it would be really cool if we could. "The goal of every race is going into it to win. If you're not running solid, you get the best you can to not do anything dumb that would jeopardize a bad finish. We try to go to win and the points kind of take care of themselves … while trying to be smart about it at the same time." Sanders brings a 141-point lead over defending USMTS champ Jim Chisholm into the action on Friday and Saturday, the second time that the Show-Me Shootout has been expanded into a two-night affair with full shows both nights. It's been a vintage Sanders season so far with five USMTS wins in 21 attempts along with 17 top-five finishes. Overall, he has 10 wins in 2025 while focusing entirely on his Modified team after dabbling in Open Late Models the last few years. "I'd love to do it," Sanders said of running the Late Model. "But we can't afford to do it and the Modified. I had to do one or the other. "It's been a really good season. We've been really consistent and it's been a solid year." Sanders has won USMTS championships in 2013, 2014, 2019, 2020 and 2023. He's seen drivers come and go and the technology in the cars changes from his early days in the sport, but he continues to excel through the challenges. "It's always been really tough, the USMTS," Sanders said. "You have different people, but the competition is really tough in that series, from when I started to now. It seems like the cars are so much different now than back then. "The biggest difference is how much clean air matters and how much the body makes a difference," Sanders said, comparing it to the Late Models but without quite as much importance in shocks and springs. "But we're getting close to that, just on a smaller scale." As always, he expects the Lucas Oil Speedway surface to test him and the others this weekend. He won the Show-Me Shootout in 2019 and 2023, but ran sixth and 10th in last year's rendition. "We've had really good runs there, but also have struggled there," Sanders said of Wheatland. "There hasn't been a whole lot of in-between. It seems like every time we go we're almost on a different set-up. That place is very unique. It's a great place and I like going there. It's just it can throw you curveballs with what the track can be." The busy two days on the dirt track also includes three divisions of the Pitts Home and Realty Weekly Racing Series. The Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars will be running for $500 to win and the Hermitage Lumber Late Models will also be in action racing for $750-to-win on Friday. The next night, the Stock Cars and B-Mods will go after $750 to win in the feature while the Late Models compete for $1,000-to-win. The USMTS feature each night will pay $5,000 to the winner. - Pokorski finds speed amid motor woes in IRA tripleheader
(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) July 29, 2025 - Despite dealing with a misfiring motor, Alex Pokorski squeezed the most out of his No. 4 Akright Auto Motorsports machine during a three-night weekend stand with the Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series contested at three different Wisconsin dirt ovals. On Friday, July 25, Pokorski made his first appearance at the lightning-fast high-banked third-mile Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis. The fifth-year Sprint Car driver turned in the 12th fastest qualifying time in the 30-car field with a lap of 12.436 seconds. After starting on the pole in the third eight-lap heat race, the West Bend, Wis. native placed third to earn a transfer spot into the 30-lap A-main. After launching from the 13th starting spot, Pokorski was running 19th when he pulled off with motor issues. He was scored 22nd. One night later, on Saturday, July 26, Pokorski enjoyed a stellar start by qualifying a strong fifth in the 34-car field with a fast lap of 12.817 around the third-mile high-banked clay oval. Following a fifth-place showing in the first IRA heat race, Pokorski gained an IRA dash berth for the first time in his career. With a third-place showing in the second four-lap dash, Pokorski rolled off sixth in the 30-lap main event. After running as high as fifth, Pokorski brushed the wall on lap 22 and held on to equal his career-best IRA A-main showing with a 13th-place finish. One night later at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., the team's weekend-long motor woes came to a head. After testing out the car during hot laps, Pokorski aborted his first qualifying attempt and retired the car for the remainder of the event. "I enjoyed racing at Mississippi Thunder and Beaver Dam," Pokorski said. "We had speed on Friday and Saturday. We just struggled with engine problems all weekend, which eventually took us out. Otherwise, we may have been faster yet." After taking the upcoming weekend off, the Alex Pokorski - Akright Auto Racing Team is set to make another start with the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing - Midwest Sprint Car Association 360 Sprint Cars on Saturday, Aug. 9, at The Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis. The team is scheduled to resume its Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series campaign on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wis., during the Kenosha County Fair. Spectator gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 5:45 p.m. and racing at 6:45 p.m. Pokorski will close out the IRA doubleheader weekend at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., as part of Corn Fest on Sunday, Aug. 17. Bryan had a knack for storytelling. He could carry on a conversation with anyone and oftentimes had people in tears laughing from his sense of humor. He was known for his generous, caring personality and was always willing to give of himself to help someone in need. On October 18, 2015, after a short but aggressive battle with brain, bone and lung cancer, Bryan passed away at his home in Placerville surrounded by his family. "Placerville Speedway has always been our home track, and I am thrilled that Scott Russell and Kami Arnold were willing to host the Carnett Clash once again," said Forryst Carnett, son of the late Bryan Carnett. - NARC RETURNS TO OCEAN SPEEDWAY FOR 65TH ANNUAL JOHNNY KEY CLASSIC
(7/28/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... The NARC 410 Sprint Car Series will make its final visit of the season to Ocean Speedway on Saturday, August 2nd, when the series takes part in the 65th running of the Johnny Key Classic. The event honors a legendary driver who dominated California racing during the late 1940's and 1950's. It was 1952 where Key reportedly won an astounding 54 races in different classes of cars, and that included a 500-lap race at San Jose Speedway where he won by 18 laps. Key won numerous other races in sprint cars and midgets during his career and won several championships. Key lost his life at just 30 years of age in a midget crash in 1954 in Ohio. The Johnny Key Classic was first run in 1954, shortly after his passing, and was won by Danny Graves. It ran for decades under different lengths and formats, but it was run in San Jose until 1999. After a hiatus, the event was brought back in 2007 at Ocean Speedway as a 360 sprint car event. In 2025, the event became a 410 sprint car event under NARC sanctioning. Saturday's race will be the fourth for NARC at Ocean Speedway and will pay $5,000 to the winner of the 30-lap main event. Nick Rescino leads everyone with six Johnny Key Classic victories over the years. Howard Kaeding was a four-time winner while his legendary son Brent won it twice. Other past winners of the race in its various forms include Al Pombo, Clyde Palmer, Marshall Sargent and Mike Sargent, Burt Foland, Chuck Miller, Ronnie Day, Tommy Tarlton, and more recently the likes of Rico Abreu, Justin Sanders, Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Thorson, Shane Golobic and Dominic Scelzi. WHO TO WATCH Former NARC champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell will be one driver fans will be keeping an eye on. While he didn't win on either night at the Howard Kaeding Classic, Bud did lead laps in the main event on the first night before a treacherous cushion bit him and sent him off the track. Kaeding knows Ocean Speedway well and will look at it as an opportunity to get back in the win column in NARC competition aboard the BK Motorsports No. 29. After mechanical issues in his heat race last Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway, Kaeding earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award in the main event, moving up ten positions. Gauge Garcia of Lemoore won last year's Johnny Key Classic, its last as a 360 event. Garcia is still hunting his first 410 victory with NARC, and it would be ironic if that first win came in the event he previously won in something different. He and the Keller Motorsports No. 2k have dealt with motor issues throughout the season but have still shown speed throughout. D.J. Netto, another former NARC champion, has two wins on the season and took over the points lead Saturday at Santa Maria. The Hanford driver and the Netto Ag No. 88n turned in a fourth place run in Watsonville the other weekend but suffered a mechanical problem and dropped out of the feature in Santa Maria. Despite having the points lead, Netto is wanting to get back in the win column this weekend. Also expected to compete is Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson, who leads the NARC Rookie of the Year chase and had a podium finish at Ocean Speedway in May. Fresno drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede are expected to join, along with Oroville's Sean Becker, Dominic Gordon of Clovis, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery and John Clark from Windsor. Former track champion Kurt Nelson is a frequent participant when NARC visits his home track as well. FAN INFO Ocean Speedway is located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville, at 2601 E Lake Ave. Front gates open at 3:30 p.m. with racing scheduled 6:00 p.m. Also joining NARC to race on Saturday will be IMCA modifieds, IMCA sport mods and BCRA lightning sprints. Saturday's event concludes the "Cooler Weather Tour," the recent stretch of races for NARC all scheduled along the California coast and featuring comfortable temperatures for teams and fans. After a break allowing NARC teams to go to the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa and High Limit events happening after that in California, NARC returns to action when it visits the reopening Calistoga Speedway for the Louie Vermeil Classic on Saturday and Sunday, August 30th and 31st. The Northern Auto Racing Club is the premier 410 winged sprint car series in the western United States. Since 1960, the traveling organization has thrilled fans at dirt tracks up and down the West Coast and crowned a "King of the West" champion.
