Thorson, Wagner, Greenwood earn Round 3 Road to Hockett wins at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 1, 2026) - Tanner Thorson was rewarded for a daring pass for the lead on lap 13 and the Broken Arrow, Okla., driver went on to win the Rod End Supply "Road to the Hockett" Round 3 in POWRi 410 Sprints on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Thorson, an Interstate Batteries High Limit Sprint series regular, took command with a slider heading into turn two and never looked back. He did have to withstand some late-race drama that forced a green-white-checker restart for the win.

Thorson's final margin was .956 seconds over Joe B. Miller with Joel Myers Jr. third.

Other winners during Round 3 were Jack Wagner (POWRi WAR Sprints) and Jake Greenwood (305 IMCA RaceSaver Sprints).

The Road to the Hockett features POWRi 410 Outlaw Sprints, POWRi WAR Sprints and 305 IMCA RaceSaver Sprints. Road to the Hockett series points champs after the four races in the POWRi 410 Winged Springs and POWRi WAR will receive an automatic bid into this fall's open-wheel crown jewel at the speedway, Sept. 17-19. The top three in points take home prize money and Lucas Oil products.

Championship night for the Road to the Hockett is set for Aug. 22.

Thorson said it was nice to make the trip to Lucas Oil Speedway, during a brief High Liimt Series break, to get some testing prior to the Hockett-McMillin in September.

"Hats off to to this team. We have the whole JST crew here tonight," Thorson said. "It was a fun little trip. Hats off to everybody on this car."

Xavier Doney started on the pole and it didn't take him long to build a sizable lead, 1.71 seconds in front of Thorson four laps in. That's when fourth-running Landon Crawley flipped his car multiple times in turn two to bring out a caution.

Roger Crockett moved into second after the restart as Doney's lead was soon back to nearly two seconds as Crockett fell behind Thorson. As the leaders entered lapped traffic, Thorson was cutting into the margin when caution No. 2 flew as third-running Crockett spun when hit by a non-contending car.

Thorson used a slider to take the lead on the restart coming off turn two. By just two laps later, caution No. 3 appeared when Doney got into the turn two marbles and spun, barely keeping it from going rolling.

That left Thorson leading Howard Moore and Joe B. Miller for the restart with 10 laps remaining.

Thorson sailed to a 2.3-second lead over the next five laps, turning it into a runaway. He was less than one lap to the checkers when Gage Montgomery, running sixth, flipped his car to bring out the led in turn two.

Thorson held on to post the $5,000 first prize.

"Jason and Shantel (Tessier) at the start of the season wanted to purchase our High Limit program that Rod (Gross) owned," Thorson said. "Buying a franchise with High Limit Racing is such a big future for sprint-car racing. And thanks to POWRi (owner) Kenny (Brown) and everybody here. They do a phenomenal job."

Miles Paulus was fourth with Howard Moore fifth.

Jack Wagner wins win POWRi WAR: Jack Wagner of Lone Jack, Mo., posted his second POWRi Wingless Sprint League feature win at Lucas Oil Speedway this season, beating Mario Clouser of Auburn, Ill., by nearly a straightaway's margin.

Third-starting Wesley Smith took advantage of a bobble from Wagner at the start to grab the lead, but Wagner was back in front the next time around and wouldn't surrender the lead again.

Wagner had a 2.2-second lead by the midway point on lap 10. That was the peak of the lead as Smith began to chip into the lead and trailed by 1.06 seconds on lap 15 - but Smith jumped the cushion in turn two and spun his car to bring out the first caution.

That put Clouser, four seconds behind at the time of the caution, right behind Wagner for the restart. Wagner handled the restart with no issues and drove away to take the win by 1.59 seconds over Clouser.

"This race track has been really set and fit for all these cars, it doesn't matter if its 305s or 410s or this non-wing car," Wagner said in victory lane. "But it doesn't start here, it starts in the shop. Me and my dad talked about it the middle of the week. How do you win races? You win races right here (in the shop). It was another perfect race car."

Bryson Smith was third with Tom Curran fourth and Wesley Smith rallying from his spin to fifth.

POWRi 305 win to Greenwood: Jake Greenwood of Woodward, Iowa, led all 20 laps for the 305 IMCA RaceSaver Sprints victory.

Pole-starting Greenwood and Landon Muehlberger ran 1-2 as the race progressed to lap 10, when caution flew for a multi-car incident in turn three.

Greenwood pulled away after the restart to lead by just over two seconds by lap 13. With all green-flag action the rest of the way, Greenwood went on to beat Waylon Phillips by 2.8 seconds with Muehlberger finishing third.

"We've been doing this RaceSaver thing because it's all we can afford and this stuff is pretty expensive," Greenwood said. "We get a lot of fun out of this."

Randy Martin finished fourth with Chase Koelliker fifth.

Fast qualifiers: Xavier Doney of Odessa set fast qualifying time for the 410s with a lap of 12.848 - just off the track record of 12.829 set By Rico Abreu with the High Limit Series on June 29, 2024.

In the POWRi WAR Sprints, Wesley Smith set fast time at 15.107. He also was just off the track record, held by Logan Seavey with a lap of 14.928 on Sept. 6, 2025 during a USAC show.
