- Pierce Wins First Dirt Track World Championship; Thornton Earns Lucas Oil Title
ROSSBURG, OHIO (October 19, 2024) - The 44th Annual General Tire Dirt Track World Championship, presented by ARP at Eldora Speedway, did not disappoint on Saturday night. Bobby Pierce came from the 14th starting spot to win his first career DTWC, worth $100,000, concluding the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season. Ricky Thornton Jr.'s third-place finish clinched the 2024 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship. The Martinsville, Indiana, driver earned his first career title, which pays $200,000. Tim McCreadie, who led the most laps during the race (79), came home in second ahead of Thornton, Devin Moran, and Max Blair. Pierce led the final 17 laps of the race to score his 35th win of the season. He became the 28th different driver in the DTWC's 44-year history to win the event, which began in 1981. McCreadie jumped to the lead at the start of the race as he led the first two laps until Davenport seized the lead on lap three. Davenport would stay out in front until McCreadie worked his way back to the point on lap six. McCreadie and Davenport then raced one-two until Thornton briefly slipped past Davenport for second on lap 25, but Davenport got back by him a lap later. The second caution of the race flew on lap 28 for a slowing Wil Herrington. On the restart, McCreadie still held the lead, and at the halfway point, he was still leading over Davenport and Josh Rice. With 63 laps scored, it was now a tight battle for the race lead among McCreadie, Davenport, and Rice, with Thornton holding down the fourth position. Coming off of turn four to score lap 64, Davenport was able to edge ahead of McCreadie, but just a few feet later, heading into turn number one, Davenport's title bid and race would end with mechanical issues as he slowed, bringing out the caution flag. On the restart, McCreadie was back out in front, with Thornton running in second. Pierce, who started on the inside of the seventh row, then moved past Thornton and into the second slot. Pierce was then able to get by McCreadie for the race lead on lap 84, as he led the rest of the way to pick up the victory. "The car was awesome," said the Oakwood, Illinois racer who won for the 24th time in his career with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. "There was a stretch in the race where I was worried, around the halfway point. I sometimes saw those other guys, and they would pull away. I got stalemated and didn't know what happened to Davenport. When that caution came out for him, I had just found that line down there in three and four, and I knew I had to get back down there. I think I restarted fourth and got to third, and it was like 30 laps to go. I was pretty nervous because I knew I had a car that could win the race right then. So, I had to calm myself down." "I knew I had a car that could win, and I just had to catch them guys. I had to keep hitting my lines there; there was something about it; I just kept getting better and better. Normally, here you'll slow down, but the line I was running, and I guess the car kept rotating better and better down there, and at the very end, I found that middle, and it just felt awesome," said Pierce, who just won his second career World 100 a month ago at Eldora. "I have been eyeing this race since it moved from Portsmouth to here. I thought it was a good move. This track can provide some good racing when it's right. I think we saw a really good racetrack tonight. I saw the hoodies and shirts with the guys' names on them that had won this race before. A mixture of guys have won this race. Of course, [Brandon] Sheppard and Freddy [Smith] have won it a lot. I wanted to be one of those names on the back of those." McCreadie, to overcome going to a back-up car after hot laps, ended up in second at the finish line, 8.717 seconds behind Pierce in the final 10 laps of the race. "Yeah, my guys did a great job. They always do a great job. They give me great equipment to run, and when we get out there, it's up to me to try to bring it home. I came up a little short. I didn't know where Bobby was, but I assumed he was on the cushion. I was up there 90% of the time, and we just faded a little. I needed some timely yellows, and we fired back off when I got them. We pulled this car out, and I don't even remember when we last ran this one; it was probably May or something, and having to switch a bunch of stuff over and get no hot laps before the feature was pretty cool for this team to pull this off. I was hoping to get them one, and it didn't work out." Thornton, who entered the night needing to finish in sixth place or higher to clinch the championship, stayed within the top five the entire race despite a scary moment when he brushed the turn two wall, which damaged the right rear quarter panel. "I got into turn three and thought the right rear was flat. It kind of laid over on the right rear, and I'm like, man, I really just gave this thing away. I don't know if I want to come back in the pits if it is flat. I'd been better off to go out the back gate," he said. "It took a lot of hard work and determination. My job is pretty easy getting to wheel this thing. Overall, I get all the glory, and they do all the hard work. So, this is definitely a big team effort by everyone at Koehler Motorsports. It's pretty awesome." "This car ran flawlessly during this playoff deal. Chris Madden [crew chief], I don't think we could have won this without him. He has been a great leader for our team and helped us stay as a whole team. I had input this weekend, but I told him this is your racetrack and like we are better off letting him make the decisions." A Vic Hill Racing Engine powers the winner's Bobby Pierce Racing, Longhorn Chassis, and is sponsored by Hoker Trucking, Churchill Transport, Low Voltage Solutions, Toyota of Danville, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Rio Grande Waste Services, Collins Brothers Towing, Carnaghi Towing and Repair, Ted Brown's Quality Paint and Body Shop, VP Fuels, and Leka Tree Service. Completing the top ten were Josh Rice, Hudson O'Neal, Ryan Gustin, Kyle Bronson, and Daulton Wilson. ROSSBURG, OH (October 18, 2024) - The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series took to the track on Friday night at Eldora Speedway for the preliminary night portion of the 44th Annual General Tire Dirt Track World Championship presented by ARP. Sixty-one entries were divided into six heat races. Tim McCreadie, who set the Allstar Performance overall fastest lap in time trials, bolted to the lead at the start of Penske Shocks heat number one, leading all ten circuits to earn the Victory Fuel Pole Award for Saturday night's $100,000 to win finale. Daulton Wilson came from the fourth spot to finish in second place, with Max Blair grabbing the third and final transfer spot. Ricky Thornton, Jr., the current series points leader, dominated all ten laps, leading wire-to-wire in winning Summit Racing Equipment heat number two. Thornton was never challenged for the race lead as he led Carson Ferguson and James Rice to the finish line to advance to the Dirt Track World Championship. In Earnhardt Technologies heat three, Jonathan Davenport split the middle of two other drivers on a restart and pulled away for the win. Trailing Davenport to the line and qualifying for the Dirt Track World Championship were Josh Rice and Hudson O'Neal. In a pivotal Simpson Race Products heat four where the winner would start on the outside front row of the Dirt Track World Championship, Mason Zeigler, a former Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year barely edged Dale McDowell in a photo finish. McDowell and World 100 winner Bobby Pierce completed the top three to punch their ticket into the finale. The fifth heat race saw Jordan Koehler race his way into his first Dirt Track World Championship, leading all 10 laps as the 22-year-old North Carolina racer crossed the line ahead of the 2024 O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year Drake Troutman, who will start his first career Dirt Track World Championship on Saturday as well. Ryan Gustin finished third. Mike Marlar, coming off a Jackson 100 win at Brownstown Speedway last weekend, cruised to victory in the sixth and final heat race of the night. Brian Shirley, the runner-up in the Knoxville Late Model Nationals, came home in second, followed by Devin Moran, who was third. - TWO USAC/CRA RACES ON TAP FOR LOGAN WILLIAMS THIS WEEKEND AT IMPERIAL
(Ontario, CA, October 17, 2024) After a short five-day turnaround, Logan Williams will be back in the Flowdynamics #5W this Friday and Saturday when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series heads to the Imperial Valley Raceway for the 3rd Southern Fall Classic. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM both nights, with racing at 7:00. General admission grandstand tickets are free. Last Saturday, Williams and his crew made the journey to the Mohave Valley Raceway in western Arizona. The 28-year-old opened the night by being the 14th fastest car in qualifying with a time of 15.477. He then started on the outside of the second 10-lap heat race on the balmy desert night. When the checkered flag ended the race on the lightning-quick, banked 1/3 mile oval, Williams sailed past the start-finish line in third. For the 18th main event in the series 20th season, Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, began in the 14th spot. Like always, he moved forward in the main event and advanced two spots to finish 12th. The result ended a three-race streak of top-10 finishes, and it was only the fourth time this season that he has finished worse than 10th. Going into this weekend's races, Williams is sixth in the series championship standings. He is a mere four points out of fifth and only 38 markers out of fourth. Williams will compete on the same fairgrounds the original CRA first raced on in 1956 and his National Sprint Car Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, debuted on 47 or 48 years ago. At that time, the action was contested on a large half-mile oval. Saturday's race will be conducted in front of the same grandstands and on the same front straightaway as when his father raced there. However, the track being used this weekend will be a quarter-mile oval. Once again, general admission seating is free on both nights. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Imperial Valley Raceway is located on the Imperial Fairgrounds at 200 East 2nd Street in Imperial, California. After this weekend's races, Williams will get a week off before heading to the 57th Annual Avanti Windows and Doors Western World Championship at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on November 1st and 2nd. A week later, he will be at the year's final USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway on November 9th. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING GOING TO IMPERIAL VALLEY RACEWAY THREE STRONG THIS WEEKEND
(Lakeside, CA, October 15, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing returns to action in a big way this Friday and Saturday at the Imperial Valley Raceway. Father and son drivers Brent and Grant Sexton will be contesting both nights in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 3rd Annual Heritage Fall Classic. The newest member of SGR, Braydin Collie, will also be on hand for the SoCal Lightning Sprint Cars portion of the two-night affair. Brent, 52, comes into this weekend's races off his second-best USAC/CRA finish of the 2024 campaign. That was an 11th at Perris Auto Speedway on September 21st. That finish was only superseded by a ninth at Perris on July 13th. Coming into this week's races, Brent is 13th in series points and is third in the Rookie of the Year award chase. Grant, who turned 20 three months ago, has been in the wrong place at the wrong time several nights in the USAC/CRA Series this season. Getting dragged into the mistakes of others has proved to be costly during the current campaign. While he has been fast every night, the 2023 Rookie of the Year has one top 10 finish in USAC/CRA this season. That came at Perris when he placed sixth in the 30-lapper on June 6th. The young driver enters the weekend 15th in points. Last March, Brent and Grant both competed at Imperial during the California Mid-Winter Fair. Brent raced the opening weekend in the inaugural races of the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series. The three-time lightning champion had a successful weekend, placing second and fourth. A week later, he jumped up to the open competition full-size sprint cars and placed 12th and 16th. Grant had a better result than Brent on that weekend when he came home ninth and fifth. Last season, Brent raced lightning sprints four times at Imperial. He never finished worse than fourth, including a win in the POWRi Southwest Series a year ago this weekend. San Diego's AJ Bender also triumphed for Lakeside, California-based SGR at Imperial in 2023. In addition to those wins, El Cajon's Braden Chiaramonte had a victory for the team early in the year. That gave SGR wins in three of the five lightning mains at the fairgrounds oval in 2023. In 2022, Brent recorded two wins at the track, and his oldest son, Dalton, also notched one victory. For Collie, this week's races will mark his first appearance on the Imperial Valley oval. It will be a unique one as well. On Friday night, he and the other SCLS drivers will be racing without wings. Friday will only be his second time racing sans wings. The last time was at Barona three weeks ago. In that race, he started eighth and finished sixth. On Saturday, the drivers will all compete with their cage and nose wings affixed to the cars. The weekend will mark Collie's fifth and sixth races in a lightning sprint car and only his second and third races away from Barona. Thus far in his budding lightning career, Collie has finished sixth or better in three of his four races. The highlight thus far was a fifth place at Barona on August 3rd. Despite only contesting three SCLS races, Collie has climbed up to 14th in points. General admission tickets for this weekend's races are free. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Imperial Valley Raceway is located on the Imperial Fairgrounds at 200 East 2nd Street in Imperial, California. - Hoag Memorial Weekend to Cap Off ESS Season on Friday
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | For the final time in 2024, the Empire Super Sprints are set to hit the track tis coming Friday at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY. As the championship was decided a handful of weeks ago with Jordan Poirier being crowned champion, this Friday's event at Outlaw offers one of the highest paying shows of the year for a non-points affair. Through two visits so far (the early spring show fell to mother nature), Matt Tanner and Davie Franek have both scored a win in 2024 at Outlaw. While both drivers would like to score another victory to finish the season, there will be a strong contingent looking to add their name to the winners list and take home the $4,000 top prize. Historically, the mid-October date has been hit-or-miss with Mother Nature and some of the cold and wet weather the fall season brings. While the weather looks fantastic for Friday night, the last time an Empire Super Sprints A-Main was contested in the month of October at Outlaw was in 2019. Former World of Outlaws regular Lucas Wolfe picked up the win that night, along with the two prior October shows in 2018 and 2017 as well. After the checkered flag falls on Friday night, the only remaining item on the 2024 ESS calendar is the annual awards banquet and rules meeting. Scheduled for Saturday November 9, more information will be released as we get closer to the annual season-ending celebration. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), X (formerly Twitter - @ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). The Empire Super Sprints would like to thank the following series sponsors for their continued support: Rifenburg Contracting Corp, PJC Spray Foam, Hoosier Racing Tire, Cobra Coaches, E&V Energy, A-Verdi Storage Containers, Fondations 4 Saisons, Pinnacle Investments, LLC, Lacaillade Masonry, Inc., FX Caprara, ASI Racewear, Lanes Yamaha, Ashley Lynn Winery, Bicknell Racing Products, DirtTrackDigest.com and LC Design. The ESS Road Ahead: Friday, October 18 - Outlaw Speedway - Dundee, NY ($4,000 to Win Hoag Memorial) Saturday, November 9 - Awards Banquet & Rules Meting
