- Eddie Tafoya Jr. Set to Return to Action at Perris, Calistoga, and Placerville
Chino Hills, CA — August 4, 2025 — After a brief summer break, Eddie Tafoya Jr. is ready to get back behind the wheel when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, August 16th. The race marks the beginning of a busy late-summer schedule for the driver of the Specialty Fasteners #51T. Following the Perris event, Tafoya and the team will head north for one of the most anticipated weekends in recent sprint car history — the grand re-opening of the legendary Calistoga Speedway on August 30th and 31st. The doubleheader promises to be a major highlight on the USAC/CRA calendar. Then, on September 1st, Tafoya will cap off the Labor Day holiday weekend by competing with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series at Placerville Speedway. Prior to the break, Tafoya raced at his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, on July 19th — just 10 days after celebrating his 28th birthday. Though the final result wasn't what he'd hoped for, the Southern California veteran showed speed and poise throughout the night. He qualified a strong seventh fastest out of 21 cars with a lap of 16.875. In his heat race, the 2018 PAS Young Gun Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year started and finished fourth in a stacked field. That set him up in the seventh position for the 30-lap main event. In front of the second-largest crowd of the season, Tafoya jumped into a fierce battle for fifth place early in the main. Showing the speed to challenge for a top-four spot, his momentum was unfortunately stalled by lapped traffic. After clearing a slower car, Tafoya's night took an unfortunate turn when he came to a stop in turn one, ending his charge. Despite the setback, Tafoya's performance showed his car and confidence are in the right place heading into the late-season stretch. "I just have to eliminate the mistakes and figure how to get around traffic when it gets slick like that," Tafoya said. "I was dealing with traffic and switching lines every lap. The lapper would go to where I switched to. I was just kind of going back and forth. I finally got a good run down the front straight. I just held it on a little longer than I should have just to get around the lapper. Then I got in the slick and locked up the brakes and slid to a stop." Forced to restart at the back of the field with only limited laps remaining, the odds were stacked against him. But Tafoya wasn't done. He mounted a determined comeback, charging through the field and clawing his way back to a 10th-place finish at the checkered flag — a clear indicator of the team's pace and persistence. "I thought for a second there we were going to start on the front row again (after qualifying), but we missed it by .01," Tafoya commented about the night of racing. "That definitely could have changed the way that main event went for us." "I am happy with the speed, and I think I have been driving good," he continued. "I just have to focus and put it all together on the same night. I have been trying to put myself in a good position and we have been doing that lately. Part of it is mental and part is car set up and stuff like that. Knowing that you have enough to be up there, we have definitely been showing that lately." Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting their 2025 racing endeavors. - Colagiovanni Wins at Brockville
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ONT) | For the first time this season, 2019 tour champion Paulie Colagiovanni found his way back to victory lane in Empire Super Sprints competition on Saturday at Brockville. After a handful of second-place finished, Colagiovanni was able to take the lead on lap thee and not look back, en-route to a $2,000 win north of the border. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Rick Wilson would take the early lead in the A-Main over Trevor Years. On lap three, a caution slowed the field and on the ensuing restart Paulie Colagiovanni was able to slip by both Years and Wilson to take the lead. As the laps wound down, Colagiovanni opened his lead to nearly half a track. Behind Colagiovanni, Friday nights second-place finisher Davie Franek had worked his way into the runner-up position but was unable to close the gap between them. For the first time in 2025, Colagiovanni crossed the line first, picking up $2,000 and a trip to victory lane. "It feels great to get a win for Denny, and the whole Denny Peebles Racing team, it's just awesome," said Colagiovanni in victory lane. "We definitely struggled a little bit with this chassis in the beginning of the year, we just didn't have the amount of track time we needed to fine tune it." Davie Franek was once again a bridesmaid, bringing home his second runner-up position on the weekend. "The start just kind of messed me up there," said Franek. "I felt really good, he (Paulie) just kind of got out there in clean air and he could maneuver a little better." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Jordan Poirier in third. "It was a little difficult to pass cars without a cushion, I was really hoping for a cushion tonight," said Poirier. "Finishing third after last night feels really good though." With 18 cars in the pits, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups, with Rifenburg Fast Time awards going to Dylan Swiernik, Davie Franek and Jason Barney. Swiernik, Franek and Barney also picked up Elab Smokers Boutique heat wins, while Joe Trenca won the L.A. Kapp Inc. dash. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday August 22 at the Autodrome Granby in Granby, Quebec. - Donath Wins First of 2025 at Can-Am
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | For the first time in 2025, Shawn Donath picked up the $2,000 win in Empire Super Sprints competition on Friday night at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, NY. It was his first victory at the northern NY oval since 2014. Tyler Rand and Jordan Poirier led the field to green for 25 laps, and as the field completed lap one it was Poirier with the lead, followed by Davie Franek and Rand. Utilizing the extreme outside line of the speedway, Poirier quickly opened up a straightaway lead over the rest of the field. By lap 7, Poirier had reached the back of the field, which allowed Franek to close the gap slightly. Behind them, Shawn Donath had managed to work his way around Joe Trenca for third. A handful of laps later, Donath used the low side of the track to pull even with Franek, and slide him for position exiting turn four. His efforts were short lived, however, as Alex Therrien used the same move on Donath in the next set of corners, taking second and setting his sights on fellow Quebec driver Poirier. Therrien was able to catch Poirier and take the lead as the duo crossed the line to complete lap 16. While Therrien opened his lead, Donath was able to get by Poirier for second. With three to go, Donath had caught Therrien and made his move to take the lead off of turn four. Despite a late race charge from Franek, Shawn Donath held on to take his first win of 2025. "Kudos to Tyler and his team, what a great race track," said Donath in victory lane. "After that first start I was third and I knew we had a good car, it just took a little bit to get rolling." Davie Franek crossed the line in second. "Shawn was good, I wish I moved down a little bit earlier, it started getting sticky down there with some rubber," said Franek. "I probably could have pushed the envelope going into three there at the end, but on a two day weekend you don't want to have to pull your backup car down." Alex Therrien held on to round out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "I made some mistakes at the end of the race, it's my fault for losing the lead," said Therrien of his third place finish. 22 cars signed in on Friday night at Can-Am, and as such the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek, Logan Crisafulli and Paulie Colagiovanni, and Elab Smokers Boutique heat races were won by Franek, Dalton Rombough and Jordan Poirier. The Cooks Family Diner Dash was won by Matt Tanner. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday August 2nd at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in Brockville, ONT. - BUD KAEDING ENDS NARC DROUGHT; WINS JOHNNY KEY CLASSIC AT WATSONVILLE
(8/2/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... Bud Kaeding ended a long drought in a big way, capturing Saturday's Johnny Key Classic at Ocean Speedway and scoring his first NARC King of the West sprint car victory since 2019. Kaeding led the entire race but had to deal with slower traffic throughout the 30-lap event and held on to win aboard the Alviso Rock-sponsored BK Motorsports No. 29 Shaver-powered Maxim. It was Kaeding's second Johnny Key Classic win, the first coming back in 1996 at the old San Jose Speedway. Tanner Carrick, who started alongside Kaeding on the front row, took the lead on the initial start, but it was called back after a red flag for a crash on the back stretch. On the complete restart, Kaeding took advantage of the second chance and jetted out to the lead. Carrick, hunting for his first NARC victory, ran in second place throughout, and on a couple of instances got within striking distance of Kaeding as the former NARC champion struggled with a couple of slower cars late in the race. Kaeding held on and managed to make key passes around those cars in the closing laps to secure the win. Kaeding celebrated by doing donuts on the track in Turns 1 and 2, stalling his car out. Bud's father Brent Kaeding rode over to greet him on his bike and loaned it to Bud for him to ride out to the front stretch. He then went through the flag gate to go into the grandstands to greet the fans before finally going to the winner's circle for his interview. Bud joined dad Brent (two wins) and late grandfather Howard Kaeding (four wins), as multi-time winners of the Johnny Key Classic. Bud's brother Tim Kaeding is also a former winner. Bud talked about his family's history competing at the Johnny Key Classic and the fact it was so long in between Johnny Key wins for him. "I was 16, my first year. I thought it was the coolest thing ever (winning the Key). I got my crew chief from then. He's been helping me the last two years," Kaeding said. "My dad and my grandfather had won that race (before), and now my dad, my grandfather and my brother (Tim) have won. I can't believe it took me thirty years to do it again." Kaeding's victory was his first NARC King of the West win since August 2019 at the Stockton Dirt Track. After being run as a 360 sprint car event at Ocean Speedway the last several years, the event switched to a 410 event under NARC sanctioning for 2025. Carrick duplicated his best NARC finish of his career, taking second aboard the California Waterfowl-sponsored Carrick Racing No. 83t Rider-powered Maxim. After starting eighth, Sean Becker worked his way into the Top 5 and was in constant battles for position throughout the race and eventually took over third place. Though he closed in on Kaeding and Carrick in the closing laps, Becker settled for a podium aboard the D&J Construction Equipment Rental-sponsored Bjork Construction No. 7b Shaver-powered Maxim. Tyler Thompson had one of his best finishes of the season, finishing fourth in the HAM Construction-sponsored Main Motorsports No. 35km Kistler-powered Maxim. Gauge Garcia, who won last year's Johnny Key Classic as a 360 event, picked up a fifth place finish aboard the Monarch Ford-sponsored Keller Motorsports No. 2k Speedway-powered Triple X. Shane Golobic, NARC points leader D.J. Netto, Max Mittry, Kaleb Montgomery and Jake Andreotti rounded out the Top 10. Mittry earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award, coming from 14th to finish eighth. Outside of qualifying, Bud Kaeding won each time he was on the track on Saturday. He won the Beacon Wealth Strategies - Raymond James Trophy Dash to secure the pole position for the feature and earlier won the evening's first heat race. Other heats were won by Thompson and Andreotti. Netto set fast time in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying with a time of 10.693 seconds around the ¼-mile clay oval. Racing was halted earlier in the evening when Nick Parker was involved in a crash during the warm up lap for the second heat race. Alert and talking with safety workers, Parker was transported to a local medical facility for observation. - Strickler takes command late for USMTS Show-Me Shootout Night 2 win at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 2, 2025) - After struggling to 25th place in Friday's opener, Kyle Strickler turned it around in a big way Saturday night at the 16th annual USMTS Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment. Strickler, the veteran from Mooresville, N.C., captured the finale of the weekend doubleheader at Lucas Oil Speedway. Starting eighth, Strickler took the lead from Tanner Mullens on lap 41 and went on to prevail in the 50-lap main event over Jim Chisholm for a $5,000 pay day. Other feature winners on Saturday night night were Trevor Drake (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Tyler Wolff (Hermitage Lumber Late Models) and Mason Beck (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars). Strickler, who's driven Late Models in the past including a podium finish at the Show-Me 100 at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2020, was ecstatic about his rebound from a night earlier. "This is just awesome," Strickler said in victory lane. "I've run second in the Show-Me (100) and to win a USMTS race here is awesome. This is a beautiful facility. Everybody said the race track is hard to get ahold of here, I just had to start with the complete wrong set-up on the thing. "Tomorrow's my birthday. This will make the long trip home a lot easier. Man, there ain't nothing like a win to turn things around. I'm getting old. I turn 42 tomorrow. I was really trying to manage my tires and I think I did a really good job of being patient on the starts and not put myself in a bad position." The race had a rough beginning that required patience from the contenders as there were two cautions before two official laps could be completed. Reece Solander was credited with leading the first lap with Kyle Brown in second. Mullens, looking for a weekend sweep, moved into second on lap five as the race began to get some rhythm under green, but was 1.5 seconds behind Solander when the event's third caution stopped the momentum again. The restart saw Mullens roar to the lead, going past Solander on the outside coming off turn two. Mullens extended his margin to one second by lap 15 with Solander in front of eighth-starting Kyle Strickler and Brown. The leaders caught lapped traffic by lap 19 just as the fourth caution came out as Mullens led Solander and Strickler. Seven cars piled up in turn one on the restart, spinning due to fluid laid down by the car of sixth-running Sean Gaddis. Following the lengthy delay to clean up the fluid, Mullens and Strickler broke away after the green to lead the field by about 10 car lengths. Mullens' advantage over Strickler was 1.1 seconds by lap 30 with Solander another 2.4 seconds behind in third. By lap 35, the leaders were dealing with slower traffic and Mullens was maintaining his advantage as the laps clicked away. But suddenly Strickler came to life, cutting the gap to one-half second by lap 38 with Chisholm having moved into third to make it a three-car battle. Strickler wrestled the lead away with a slider coming out of turn four on lap 41. Chisholm took second away from Mullens on lap 43, but was a half-second behind Strickler with six to go and couldn't make up any ground. Strickler held on from there, beating Chisholm by .895 seconds with USMTS season championship leader Rodney Sanders third after starting 23rd. Mullens settled for fourth with Tyler Wolff fifth. Chisholm, who swept the Show-Me Shootout a year ago en route to the series championship, was pleased with finishes of third and second on back-to-back nights. "A really good weekend for us as a team. We can't complain at all," Chisholm said. "Congratulations to Kyle. He drove around us early and drove away with it. We probably took it a little too easy, early. We fell back a few spots, but it's all about not getting over your head. I'm super proud of my whole team." Sanders, who was unable to complete his heat race due to a flat tire, salvaged a podium finish after the rough start to his night. "We struggle early in the night here," Sanders said. "We were so bad in the heat and the B-Main. I just have to thank all my guys. It would be so easy to get down and take your confidence away. We were thrashing, just trying to get something going. It was a good team effort and a good rebound." Drake hangs on for USRA B-Mods win: Trevor Drake of Brighton led all 20 laps, but paced the final one by the narrowest of margins over his buddy Ryan Gillmore to capture the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod win, his first of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway. "I kept hearing somebody on the outside, but they quit showing the video (jumbotron) with about 10 to go," Drake said. "I seen Gillmore and (Jon) Sheets going back and forth and I saw Gillmore on the board with like three to go. I live with him so I've got to live with the car all week and then to follow it every week here, I'm glad to finally beat it." Drake started on the pole with Sheets to the outside and it was Drake who led in the early going with Sheets right behind. Drake gradually worked his lead to .706 seconds by the mid point on lap 10. As action continued to run caution-free, Drake led by just under one second when he caught lapped traffic on lap 15. That's when caution came out as one of the slower cars spun in turn four. By this point, 10th-starting Gillmore had advanced to third for the single-file restart. As Gillmore battled past Sheets for second on lap 17, a caution came out for a spin in turn two. Drake was able to hold off Gillmore over the final three laps, prevailing by .029 seconds - or about a quarter-car-length - as Gillmore made a last-corner charge on the outside. Andy Bryant was credited with third and JC Morton fourth after Sheets, who finished third at the checkers, was disqualified in post-race tech inspection. Wolff finishes Late Model sweep: Tyler Wolff ran away from the field and won the Hermitage Lumber Late Model feature for the second night in a row. The Fayetteville, Ark., led all 20 laps and beat runner-up Robbe Ewing. Wolff, fifth in the USMTS feature earlier, had a four-second lead when the race's long caution flew on lap 13 for debris. He didn't have any trouble after the restart, rolling to the final margin of 2.99 seconds over Ewing. "This Late Model fits our style pretty good," Wolff said. "Man, the track was awesome. You could drive it about wherever you wanted to go and drive it pretty hard. What a weekend. That was awesome." Tucker Cox wound up third with Alan Westling fourth and JC Morton fifth. USRA Stock Cars win to Beck: Mason Beck of Urbana won a thriller to cap the program, battling past Jason Hughes with a winning pass with four laps remaining for the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature win. Beck led Rodney Schweizer by a half-second when caution slowed the action on lap seven. Hughes, the winner on Friday night, grabbed second on the restart and the two battled side-by-side over the next several laps. Hughes finally was able to power past Beck on the outside on lap 13 to take command. But Beck battled back on the inside and regained the top spot on lap 16, coming out of turn four. Beck was able to hang on to earn his third win of the Lucas Oil Speedway season, beating Hughes by .381 seconds. "He got past me last night. I was over-driving it pretty hard," Beck said. "I about gave another one away. As soon as he got around me I thought it was over. I remembered I just had to calm down and hit my marks." Schweizer finished third with William Garner fourth and James McMillin fifth. - Brubaker breaks year drought with 410 Fremont win; Moore gets 1st non-wing victory
FREMONT, Ohio - It's been over a year since Stuart Brubaker last visited the Beaverdam Fleet Services Victory Lane at Fremont Speedway presented by Gill Construction. The Helena, Ohio driver threw that gorilla off his back Saturday, Aug. 2, claiming his 10th career victory at "The Track That Action Built" on Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County/Sandusky County Visitors Bureau Night. Brubaker, who started fourth in the 30-lap feature, took the lead from TJ Michael on lap four and picked his way through heavy lapped traffic to earn his first 410 sprint car win since July 6, 2024. Current Fremont point leader Cap Henry, Jamie Miller, Darin Naida and DJ Foos rounded out the top five. "It's been forever…and it's not for lack of effort. These guys have been busting their asses. I think we've switched cars every two or three weeks. Actually I came to the shop Monday and they were putting this car together. We've been working on it…we've just been rolled up for the last year. This is an X1 and I've been talking to Ryan Linder on the phone…today for probably 45 minutes. I have to thank Ashton, Brad, Bill and Ron…if not for them we couldn't be here," said Brubaker beside his Pit Stop of Tiffin, Black Swamp Heating & Cooling, Story Equipment, Gary Holland Trucking, Seamless Gutters by Josh Kromer, Finish Line Fuel, Handy Grafix backed #35. Shawn Valenti looked to be heading to victory lane for the 89th time of his career at Fremont in the non-wing American Sprint Car Tour, but a tangle with a lapped car with just six laps to go handed the lead to Mike Moore. Moore, from Fostoria, drove a perfect six laps to score his first career win at Fremont Speedway. "Since they had this race on the calendar last year I marked it. I texted Rich (Farmer, track promoter) last year and told him thanks for bringing this series out here. This whole steel block deal is perfect for somebody like me. We don't have deep pockets…try to run with the 305 guys but they are just so tough. To be able to pull this off is so awesome especially at my home track. I was just trying to be smart. I knew if we hugged the bottom we were good. I had nothing for Shawn but it all worked out for us," said Mike Moore beside his Ridez Restored, Subway Restaurants, Bodnar Detailing backed #5M. Fremont Speedway Presented by Gill Construction will be back in action Monday, Aug. 18 to kick off the Sandusky County Fair with the 305 sprints and the ladies powder puff truck race. - Dylan Norris Victorious In Williams Grove 410 Sprints For Second Of Career, Derek Locke Returns To 358 Winner's Circle
Mechanicsburg - Dylan Norris of Hanover piloted his No. 17 to the 410 sprint car win at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, turning in an impressive drive to record the second oval victory of his career. His previous win at the track in the division was on March 25, 2022. Norris pocketed $5,500 for the victory after scoring a pair of 358 sprint wins at the track on July 18. In 358 sprint action Friday night, Derek Locke returned to victory lane for the first time since September of 2023. Norris started sixth in his drive to victory and watched as polesitter Tim Glatfelter took control at the start of the 25 lap main. By lap three Norris had motored by Alex Attard for the third spot before setting his sights on Jeff Halligan for second. The leader entered the rear of the field on lap 11 and began putting cars a lap down before Norris got by Halligan with 11 laps to go. And just as Norris took second Glatfelter stumbled on the cushion, allowing both drivers to quickly run up on the leader. Norris pulled the trigger with nine laps to go and took control of the race with Halligan racing into second on lap 19. A lap later the Ephrata driver was briefly able to take the lead away from Norris as the pair worked traffic but Norris kept his composure and reclaimed the top spot in the fourth turn before the leaders could cross the line with five laps to go. And from there Norris would not be challenged, taking the win by 1.167 seconds over Freddie Rahmer, who drove from ninth at the start. Halligan settled for third followed by Tyler Ross and 16th starter Brock Zearfoss. Sixth through 10th went to Glatfelter, 17th starter Lance Dewease, Troy Wagaman Jr., Attard and Ryan Taylor. Heats went to Glatfelter, Attard and Halligan. Polesitter Chase Gutshall led the first 10 laps of the 25-lap 358 sprint feature before third starter Locke drove by. Fourth starter Ayden Hare took second with 10 laps to go and would proved to be a challenge for Locke before the finish. After losing second back to Gutshall for a few more laps, Hare put his elbows up and began driving higher and harder around the half-mile, again racing into second with four laps to go. Hare then ran down leader Locke and was able to rally to his outside on the final circuit but ended up crossing the finish line as the runner-up by .386 seconds. Dylan Norris was third followed by Gutshall and Nash Ely. Sixth through 10th went to Cody Fletcher, Jude Siegel, Matt Findley, Kyle Spence and Andy Best. Heats were won by Hare, Locke and Steve Owings. Feature Finishes 8/1/25 410 sprint cars, 25 laps: 1. Dylan Norris, 2. Freddie Rahmer, 3. Jeff Halligan, 4. Tyler Ross, 5. Brock Zearfoss, 6. - Mullens wires the field as 16th annual USMTS Show-Me Shootout opens at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 1, 2025) - Tanner Mullens bounded to the front on the opening lap and went on to lead all 40 circuits to capture Friday night's opener of the 16th annual USMTS Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment. Mullens, of Wichita, Kan., outdistanced Tyler Wolff to earn the $5,000 prize at Lucas Oil Speedway. The United States Modified Touring Series will go again on Saturday night in another 40-lapper for another $5,000 to win. Other feature winners on Friday night were JC Morton (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Tyler Wolff (Hermitage Lumber Late Models) and Jason Hughes (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods). From the inside of row two, Mullens grabbed the lead shortly after the green, getting around pole-starter Nic Bidinger. He navigated two brief cautions and a bout with lapped traffic to score his third USMTS victory of the season and 16th overall win. "I was fading there at the end," Mullens said of his 1.5-second win over Wolff. "The lappers were right the the bottom and the middle was getting really, really dirty. I would stay out there for a few laps and if I wasn't going to make it, I had to go back to the bottom. "I'd seen Tyler (Davis) was getting close there. He's really good here and I knew it would be tough, but I held on until the end. It was a pretty good evening." Mullens had a 1.4-second lead by lap five but the big early news was Davis, advancing to third from eighth. Ninth-starting Wolff, a few minutes after winning the Late Model feature, found himself in fifth after eight laps. That's when the first caution flew for a spin in turn two. Davis took second away from Kyle Brown on the restart as Mullens pulled away. Brown spun on lap 12 to bring out the second and final caution. Mullens got it rolling again after the restart and established a 1.5-second lead over Davis by the halfway mark. Showing his strength on longer green-flag runs, Mullens' lead peaked at 2.4 seconds by lap 24. But as he encountered lapped traffic soon after, Davis began to slice into the margin and the gap was under one second by lap 29. Then as Mullens got around a pack of slower cars and Davis was held up, he had breathing room again. Mullens was flawless from there as the race remained green. He won by 1.5 seconds over Wolff, who passed Davis for second with one to go. "It feels good. We've ran good here in the past," Mullens said. "It's just kind of hit or miss. Here lately we've been a little bit better. I just can't thank everybody enough who's on the car." Wolff said his only hope was to stay close and hope for a late-race caution. "I was just trying to be patient," Wolff said. "We were close. We were just off a little bit, but overall a good night for us. Getting to run a Late Model and Mod back-to-back is fun." Tenth-starting Bobby Williams of Hermitage finished fourth and Bidinger was fifth. USMTS championship leader Rodney Sanders salvaged 10th after starting 17th. He finished one spot behind defending series champion Jim Chisholm, who started 13th. USRA B-Mods win to Morton: JC Morton of Springfield earned his second Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod win of the season, passing race-long leader Colson Kirk with five laps remaining. Front-row starters Kirk and Logan Smith ran 1-2 in the early going with Andy Bryant and Morton joining the battle. Those four were bunched within one second by lap six and Morton advanced to second two laps later. Finding speed on the bottom, the fifth-starting Morton closed in on Kirk by lap 10 and was .408 seconds behind when caution appeared on lap 11. Morton hopped to the high side on the restart and started to reel in the leader, finally going around Kirk on lap 15 as he switched back to the bottom. Morton took it home from there, beating Kirk by 1.5 seconds. "We took off there and the top five cars were really all about the same speed," Morton said. "We were just kind of maintaining, trying to pull off a move here or there. Then we got to the leader and I about showed 'em the top over here and I think that might have about ended it. We got back going green and I chose the top and got behind and it ended up all right." Smith held onto third with Jon Sheets fourth and Waylon Dimmitt coming from 12th to fifth. Wolff scores Late Model triumph: USMTS regular Tyler Wolff of Fayetteville, Ark., scored his second Hermitage Lumber Late Model win at Lucas Oil Speedway, leading all 20 laps of the main event. Wolff said he's enjoying running the Late Model when he can, using one of his Modified motors to supply the power. "It's been a great time getting to run it here," Wolff said. "I appreciate the track running these things. It fits the motors we have and makes it a lot of fun. It gives us a chance to do double duty." Wolff started up front and set the clear pace from the start, building a 2.5-second lead over Robbe Ewing by lap 11 when the race's first caution came out. The caution didn't affect Wolff as he quickly rebuilt the lead in excess of two seconds by lap 15. Wolff went on to prevail by 3.3 seconds over Ewing, the season points leader at the track. Tucker Cox finished third with JC Morton fourth and Bryon Allison fifth. Hughes earns USRA Stock Cars win: Four-time USMTS Modified champion Jason Hughes, of Watts, Okla., came to Lucas Oil Speedway in another division. Hughes took the lead on lap four and drove away for the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature victory. It was his second in a Stock Car in two attempts this season. "These Stock Cars put on a hell of a race," Hughes said. "It reminds me of the old days in the Modifieds when we had no traction, no side-bite and you're just out there sliding around. You just have to keep it all underneath you and that's a lot of fun." Fourth-starting Hughes took the lead from William Garner on a lap-four restart after Garner paced things to that point. Garner faded out of contention a lap later when his car lost power, but did fire back up to remain on the lead lap. Meanwhile, Hughes led Mason Beck in a two-car breakaway with Rodney Schweizer nearly three seconds behind in third. Hughes edged away to a 1.2-second lead over Beck by lap 12. Hughes went on to win by 1.7 seconds over Beck with Schweizer third, Christopher Sawyer fourth and Johnny Coats fifth. - J & S Classics To Present 63rd annual Williams Grove World of Outlaws National Open October 3/4
Mechanicsburg - J & S Classics of Grantville will present the 63rd annual World of Outlaws National Open at Williams Grove Speedway coming up on Friday and Saturday, October 3 and 4. The announcement that J & S Classics would join forces with Williams Grove for the prestigious event was made Friday night at the track. For Sandy Kline, owner of J & S Classics and current car owner for Doug Hammaker, sponsoring the National Open at Williams Grove just comes naturally. "I have always loved the National Open and after you win the National Open, when you go to it, it's a whole different ball game once you've earned that win," Kline says. Kline and her late husband Jim got their win in the National Open with Greg Hodnett at the wheel of their famed golden No. 22 back in 2009. "You're going with a whole different attitude because you've sat in that victory lane. Any time you've won an outlaws race as a Pennsylvania Posse member you're doin' your job," Kline matter-of-factly states. As a car owner, Kline's stables did their job a total of eight times over the outlaws, all at Williams Grove, with pilots Jason Johnson, Hodnett and Fred Rahmer as wheel men. The 63rd annual running of the J & S Classics World of Outlaws National Open at Williams Grove Speedway will offer the Saturday, October 4 winner $75,000 for his 40 laps of work. And Kline is excited to see it all unfold. "It's my whole thing. Most people don't get this - I'm a woman who absolutely loves sprint car racing! I grew up with racing. I've lived it most of my life," she says. The two-day J & S Classics National Open will pit the outlaws pilots against the venerable Pennsylvania Posse sprint car stars for an all star match-up. "I guess you gotta' give back somewhere along the line. If you have it and you can do it, then you know, help this sport along," Kline says of her reasoning behind coming aboard the National Open. "You gotta' keep sprint car interest alive and well. The Pennsylvania Posse against the outlaws is one of the best competitions." "So for me there's nothing better than going to a race," she adds. "It's a sweet rivalry between the outlaws and the posse. It's exciting!" All the excitement of the Williams Grove Speedway J & S Classics World of Outlaws National Open weekend gets underway Friday night, October 3 when round one takes to the track at 7:30 pm.
