- Varin Wins Fulton; Poirier Crowned ESS Champion
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | After waiting out a rain delay of over 12 hours, it was Danny Varin who sat in victory lane at the Fulton Speedway early Saturday afternoon. Rain showers late in the program on Friday night caused the postponement of the remainder of the program, including the final two Empire Super Sprints heat races until Saturday Morning. Pinnacle Pole sitter Sammy Reakes IV took charge of the field from the drop of the green flag, leading the first 16 laps. Danny Varin, who had started third, spent the first 8 laps in third before getting to second on lap 10. Just 6 laps later, Varin was able to get by Reakes IV for the top spot. Behind Varin, Jordan Poirier and Nick Sheridan battled for the podium. A last-lap effort by Poirier to get by Varin came up short, and it was ultimately Varin who came out on top, claiming his 5th win of the season. "I felt pretty good before that last caution, but the last caution had me nervous," said Varin in victory lane. "This is huge for this team. We want more wins, but everybody else is really, really good. It's been tough this year, we've hit a low spot this last month but my wife told me before we came up here that I owed her that trophy, so we snagged it." Jordan Poirier not only finished second in the A-Main, but also clinched his third tour championship in as many years. "We were bad at the beginning of the feature, and then during the red flag I messed with my wing a little bit," said Poirier. "I got better after that to end up on the podium." "We've been like second or third all year long, we were never the fastest but just consistent. We kept our nose clean and were always there. It's a testament to this team. We didn't break anything this year, we finished all our races." "At the end of the day that's what we aimed for at the beginning of the season and to win the championship, it feels so good." Nick Sheridan held on to third place, rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. "This is awesome, its our first time coming down here," said Sheridan. "This track is great, we've never really raced anything this slick before, so we were trying some stuff with the setup. It was a little free but I'm not going to complain. There are some really good drivers in front of me." On Friday night the field was split into four timed hot lap groups. Matt Farnham, Chris Hile, Jason Barney and Nick Sheridan all earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in their respective groups. The first two E&V Energy heat races were completed before the rain came, with Logan Crisafulli and Joe Trenca picking up wins. As the program resumed Saturday morning, Jason Barney and Nash Ely won the final two E&V Energy heats. The final scheduled on-track event for the Empire Super Sprints this season is Friday October 18th at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY for the annual $4,000 to win Hoag Memorial weekend. - SANDERS & KAEDING SPLIT MORRIE WILLIAMS NARC FEATURES AT KINGS; MACEDO NAMED WILLIAMS CHAMPION
(10/5/24 - Ben Deatherage) Hanford, CA ... On a night that paid tribute to the late legendary car owner Morrie Williams, it would be two familiar faces from the Golden State gracing victory lane at Kings Speedway. The Twin 20 feature events were won by NARC 410 Sprint Car Series standouts Justin Sanders and Tim Kaeding. For Kaeding, it was an impressive 73rd all-time NARC King of the West triumph, while for Sanders, it was the 19th of his career and sixth this season. When the dust settled, Cole Macedo emerged as the overall champion of the Morrie Williams Memorial by a single point, posting a pair of third place finishes. "All my guys did their jobs tonight," commented the Morrie Williams champion Macedo. "I feel like we were victims of circumstances in that first main with the lane changing down to the bottom and racing with my hair on fire in the last one and getting as far forward as I could." After a big crash on the original start of the first of two features, Beacon Wealth Strategies dash winner Macedo struck first with the Tarlton & Son #21 Maxim getting ahead of the field and in firm control of the race lead. Unbeknownst to him, Sanders, ARP Quick Qualifier Kaeding, and Dominic Scelzi would slice and dice furiously for the runner-up spot, allowing Macedo to walk away in the Tarlton Motorsports entry. Macedo's advantage of over four seconds negated by a caution on the seventh circuit. On the restart, Sanders pounced his way into second, kept close with the leader, and motored underneath him in the turn three on lap ten. From there, Sanders had to deal with one caution but mastered the final restart to score his second career NARC win at Kings Speedway after starting fourth. "The first couple of laps, I felt okay, and I could see Cole running the top and pulling away," said a focused Sanders, amped and ready to tackle the second 20-lapper. "I knew I had to get by him on the restart," Sanders continued. "I knew it was going to be tough getting around him and I just happen to catch Cole not knowing where he needed to be, and after that, it was just hitting my marks and not losing speed down the straightaways." Two-time NARC titlist Scelzi secured the second spot with a couple of trips remaining in his Whipple Superchargers #41 Maxim to finish second. Macedo settled for third. 2005 NARC champion Sean Becker was fourth in the Bjork Construction #7B Maxim for chased by Landon Brooks in the Lippert Construction #42X. Brooks was subbing in for the injured Justyn Cox in the Bates-Hamilton Racing operation. The brothers Kaeding: Tim and Bud, were sixth and seventh, respectively. Ryan Rocha was an impressive eighth in his NARC feature debut after starting 16th to gain the Williams Roofing Hardcharger award. Seventeenth starter Billy Aton and NARC rookie point leader Caeden Steele rounded the top ten. In the second feature, Dylan Bloomfield jetted ahead of the field in the Starr Property Management #83V Maxim. Bloomfield was chased down by 2019 NARC champion D.J. Netto, and the two battled wheel-to-wheel for several laps before Netto secured the position on the sixth lap. The restart presented a new challenger in the form of Gauge Garcia as the Keller Motorsports-fielded Monarch Ford #2K XXX blitzed ahead of Bloomfield and Netto to snatch the lead in turn two after a brilliant double overtake. However, it would be a short-lived reign as Netto counter-attacked on the bottom in turn three to retain the lead. A new threat emerged shortly after that in the form of 12th starter Tim Kaeding. Piloting the Williams Motorsports-provided EMADCO Disposal #0 Maxim, he obtained third on lap eight, and the runner-up position a lap later. Although it took patience, Kaeding successfully hunted down Netto and the two-time NARC champion became the new race leader on the 15th circuit. A late yellow with four to go bunched the field up one last time, but it proved not to be an obstacle for Kaeding as he motored to his ninth career Kings NARC win since 2000. "D.J. has been one of the fastest cars this summer out here, and I figured when he was out front, he was going to check out," explained Kaeding. "We started hitting the bottom pretty good out of three, and I was making up time as he was running around the top. Somehow, we ended up sticking it, and we got there. We raced him clean and had no issues. This is a testament to my guys: Ashley, Shane, Jason, Josh, everyone that works on this car night in and night out." Hometown racer Netto finished a respectable second in his Netto Ag #88N KPC. Macedo made a valiant charge on the last restart to be on the podium to finish third after starting 15th. - Chris Simpson earns MLRA Fall Nationals feature as Peyton Taylor bags Super Stocks Big Buck 50 triumph
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 5, 2024) - Chris Simpson's weekend of settling for second-best at the Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals took a positive turn as the veteran Iowa driver found his way to victory lane Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Simpson wrested the lead away from his older brother and MLRA points leader Chris Simpson on lap 19. He held it the rest of the way and went on to claim his second series victory of the season and second career MLRA victory at Lucas Oil Speedway. It was worth $10,000 as the co-headliner with the 8th annual Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt. The return of the Big Buck 50 after a four-year break saw a familiar winner. Peyton Taylor of Batesville, Ark., grabbed the $10,000 victory to go with his Big Buck victories in 2019 and 2020. He took command on lap 15 and led the rest of the way. Taylor also earned a spot in the sold-out Whitetail Trophy Hunt next month in mid-Missouri, which pays $15,000 to win. Chris Simpson capped a weekend of perseverance after finishing runner-up to Ryan Gustin two nights in a row. He said a poor qualifying performance left him displeased and with a lot of work to do, starting the final-nigh feature in eighth. "We love coming here," Simpson said. "I just have to thank all my guys. It's a good way to end it. We've been working hard all year. "I'm missing my daughter's homecoming tonight, but at least I'm bringing 10 grand home," Simpson added. Chad Simpson led in the early going, with a 1.7-second margin by lap 10 over Dustin Hodges and eighth-starting Chris Simpson. Chad Simpson caught lapped traffic by lap 14 and Chris Simpson closed in on his back bumper with Scott third and Tony Jackson Jr. fourth. The first and what would be the only lead change came on lap 19 as Chris Simpson, charging from eighth at the start, took over the top spot coming off turn four. Chris Simpson's lead was 1.2 seconds over Scott when the race's lone caution flew on lap 30 as Gustin - the feature winner the previous two nights - slowed on the front stretch while running 10th. "I don't know what happened to Ryan," Chris Simpson said. "I figured if he finished, he's probably in the top three. It would have been fun to battle it out with him. We both were good all weekend, but to top it off with the $10,000, I'll take it." With a clear track ahead, Chris Simpson took off after the restart to a one-second lead lead over Scott with Chad Simpson another two seconds behind the top duo. Scott rallied to within a half-second with seven to go, with Jackson moving into third. As the race closed under a long green-flag run, Simpson held on and beat Scott by one second. "We feel like we have qualifying figured out, we're trying now what we need on these new cars when the race track dries out on a longer race," Scott said. "Congrats to Chris and them. Hopefully we can come do this agan and get into victory lane." Jackson wound up third with Urbana's Dillon McCowan fourth after starting 16th. Chad Simpson, after leading the first 18 laps, settled for fifth. "We had a good car all weekend, I just can't qualify well here for whatever reason," Jackson said. "A good race track and a fun race track and we had a really good race car." Jackson made some gains in the MLRA championship chase by finishing two spots ahead of Chad Simpson. Jackson now trails Simpson by 75, with Chris Simpson 65 behind his brother, as three series races remain. Hodges set the fast qualifying time with a 14.479-second lap to lead Group A. That was near the track record of 14.443 set by Garrett Alberson on May 23, 2024 on Night 1 of the Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 weekend. Taylor earns another Big Buck 50: A four-year break in between renditions of the Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt didn't alter who went to victory lane, but the route to get there was unique. Peyton Taylor, who won the race in 2019 and 2020, had to use a provisional to get into the field. He drove from 25th and last to start all the way to the lead well before the halfway mark of the 50-lapper. Taylor took command from Terry Schultz on lap 15 and, driving a car borrowed from Jared Neiswander after Taylor's car was plagued by motor issues on both preliminary nights, was never seriously threatened the rest of the way. "To go back to back to back, it's pretty surreal," Taylor said. "Thank you all for bringing this back. This is a special event for a lot of us grassroots racers and I think everybody here had a fun time. "Jared is one of my good buddies and he said, 'man, I ain't racing it, you're racing it.' Thanks to him, his dad, his family and all these great sponsors on this car." Pole-starting Gary Clark led the first three laps before fellow front-row starter Schultz grabbed the top spot on lap four. Tosh moved into second on lap five as Schultz led by 1.6 seconds. Schultz, winner of the inaugural Big Buck 50 in 2014, had a 1.65-second lead over Tosh when action was slowed by a caution on lap nine as Colton Bourland's car caught fire under the rear end. After the restart, Schultz rolled to a 2.3-second lead by lap 14, when another caution flew. But the big news at that point was Taylor's charge from 25th to third. Taylor needed only one more lap to complete his last-to-first run, taking over the lead on lap 15 as Schultz slid all the way back to fourth. As the race continued into its longest green-flag run, Taylor's lead was 2.2 seconds by lap 40 with Tony Anglin running behind J.T. Carroll. As the laps dwindled, Taylor's lead started to shrink until Carroll got hung up in lapped traffic. That helped Taylor increase his margin to 4.7 seconds with two remaining. But the comfortable drive to the checkers became a bit more dramatic when a caution flew just before the white flag was ready to appear. "I talked to God on about every caution, but we had a couple of good conversations on that last yellow," Taylor said. "I've got to give all the glory to God. We're all blessed beyond what we're worth and I can't give enough glory to Him." It didn't matter as Taylor had a flawless restart and went on to finish clear of Carroll by 1.7 seconds. Carroll was disqualified in post-race technical inspection, elevating Derek Brown to second. Anglin was third with Josh Jones fourth and Richie Tosh fifth. - CHRIS SIMPSON ROLLS TO $10,000 VICTORY IN MLRA FALL NATIONALS FINALE
Wheatland, MO (October 5, 2024) - After playing the role of bridesmaid the prior two nights, Chris Simpson proved to be the man to beat on Saturday night in winning the $10,000 finale of the 2024 MLRA "Fall Nationals" at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The Oxford, IA driver was buried deep in the field following MyRacePass qualifying, but managed to race from fifth to the runner up position in his heat race, good enough to put him into the 8th starting position for the feature. Dustin Hodges grabbed his second MRP Fast Time award of the season and started from the pole, alongside of Stormy Scott for the 50 lap feature event. On the initial start, Scott jumped before entering the Nutrien Ag Solutions Start Zone, resulting in a one row penalty that moved point leader Chad Simpson to the outside front row. Chad Simpson would capitalize, and took control on the opening lap with Hodges in tow. By lap 12 Chad Simpson had to begin working his way through lapped traffic, all the while Chris Simpson was methodically working his way toward the front along the low line. The brotherly battle would heat up with Chris making his way into second on lap 11 setting up a battle between them as they navigated lapped traffic. Chris Simpson made the Swift Springs Move of the race on lap 18 when he charged to the inside of Chad Simpson and took the lead exiting turn four. The lone caution of the night waved on lap 30, when Ryan Gustin slowed on the front stretch. Gustin would exit the track under his own power, retiring from the main event where he would be scored in 20th in the final run down after winning the first two nights of the Fall Nationals. After dropping to as low as 6th on lap 12, Stormy Scott was the only driver in the closing laps to apply pressure to the back bumper of Chris Simpson. After restarting in second, Scott was able to close to within a couple of car lengths in the closing laps, but Chris Simpson would go on to capture his second MLRA win of the season by 1.008 seconds over Scott. Tony Jackson Jr. grabbed his first podium finish of the weekend with a third-place run, ahead of Dillon McCowan and Chad Simpson. Photo Credit: Todd Boyd Chris Simpson added the MD3 Most Laps Led contingency to his portfolio in the dominating performance that found him to be unbeatable on Saturday night. "If you would have told me that (being unbeatable) after we qualified, I would say you were nuts, we timed really bad." "This was a good way to end it," Simpson said of his weekend. "We have been working hard all year and had speed, just kind of stupid stuff happened like last time we were here, we broke the power steering line during our warm up lap and kind of ruined our points deal." Chad Simpson now holds a 65-point advantage heading into the final three races of the season, while Chris Simpson moves to second after entering the weekend with a 200 point deficit. Tony Jackson Jr. also made-up ground, after entering the weekend 100 points behind Chad Simpson he now rests just 75 points from a third career MLRA championship. Scott's runner up was his second top five finish of the weekend, finishing no worse than 7th in the three night affair. "We feel like we have qualifying figured out, we're just trying to work on figuring out what we need on these new cars for when the race track starts to dry out and in these longer races. We were definitely better tonight, there was more moisture in it for sure but I think we found some gains. Hopefully we can come do this again and put it in victory lane." Jackson's podium run marked his 9th top five finish of the season. "We had a good car all weekend, I just can't qualify here for whatever reason. I should probably work on that for as many times as we come here," exclaimed Jackson. "It was a good race track, a fun race track, and we had a great car tonight," he concluded. Lucas Oil MLRA action will resume this Thursday October 10th, when the series makes a visit to the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO for a $7,000 to win feature event. The 2024 season will then close out with two big nights of racing on Friday and Saturday at the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL for the annual "MLRA Championship Weekend". - Davenport Breaks Through With First Career Pittsburgher
IMPERIAL, PA (October 5, 2024) - Jonathan Davenport, a three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, has previously come close to winning the Pittsburgher presented by Big River Steel. However, on Saturday night, he dominated the 70-lap feature race and secured his first Pittsburgher win, taking home $50,000 out of the $150,000 purse. Davenport first raced at the "Monster Half-Mile" known as Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway nine years ago. On Saturday night, he put an exclamation mark on the event by becoming a first-time winner. Devin Moran charged from the 12th starting spot to finish second, earning $20,000 for his runner-up finish in the Double Down Motorsports entry. At the checkers, Moran finished 1.864 seconds behind the winner and maintains a 10-point lead heading to Brownstown Speedway next weekend over Davenport in the Chase for the Championship. Max Blair put on another strong performance in a Crown Jewel event, finishing third on the Big River Steel Podium. Tim McCreadie, who held second place at one point during the race, finished fourth, and former Pittsburgher winner Hudson O'Neal rounded out the top five drivers. For the 40-year-old native of Blairsville, Georgia, the win was his 83rd in his Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series career, breaking a tie with Jimmy Owens for second on the all-time win list. "I have been coming here since 2015, the first time I was with Kevin Rumley. I fell in love with the place. This place is awesome, it's big and wide, and it raced like I never thought it would tonight. I would have thought for sure it would have moved back up the racetrack." The race was slowed by only one caution flag, with 42 laps scored. Davenport had built a 7-second lead over the field, but the huge advantage would disappear with the restart. "We just got to where we were running around the bottom there, and I was making pretty good time on the lapped cars that were still way out on the track. I knew we had a pretty good long run there, and I said before the edges of our tires were killed. I figured the first couple of laps when we went back green would be more momentum, so I tried to float out and just kind of move around, but I just didn't feel the racetrack as good as I needed to even when my tires cooled down so I just kept migrating back to the bottom." Moran, who won the weekend opener on Friday night, quickly came up through the field from his outside the sixth-row starting spot. He climbed to third and then eventually to second before the caution flag. But, on the restart, Moran slipped back to fourth but recovered in the remaining laps to close the gap on Davenport, but he never could get close enough to make a last-lap challenge. "That restart, you know, I have watched a ton of film from here. The bottom got the top on the restarts like 12 out of 15 times, so I thought that bottom would be good, and that's why I picked it. The top was just cleaned up enough, so I had to get back by Hudson [O'Neal] and Timmy [McCreadie] again. Our car ran really, really good tonight. I felt like we had a great car, and JD did too, obviously. Congrats to him on the win. I think we will have a dogfight in these last three races." Blair, like many other competitors in the field, was seeking his first win in Pittsburgh, his home state. He finished third in the Centerline Motorsports entry and earned a $10,000 prize. "Even if we have started farther forward, I wasn't real good at the beginning of the race. The bottom had so much moisture in it the first little while I think you had to be in it, and I wasn't good enough to be in it down there. I just rode around for as long as I could, but once it slowed down, you could run across the racetrack. This car really came alive at the end of the race. I thought I was going to run second there for a minute. To run third in the Pittsburgher is pretty awesome." The winner's Lance and Darla Landers-owned, Double L Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine is sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dyna Gro Seed, Lucas Oil Products, Bob Cat of Batesville, Bilstein Shocks, ASC Warranty, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, VP fuels, and Midwest Sheet Metal. Ricky Thornton Jr., Mason Zeigler, Clay Harris, Carson Ferguson, and Drake Troutman completed the top ten.
