- Category 4 Hurricane: Horstman Wins Fourth GLSS Feature at I-96 Friday
Lake Odessa, MI - The MacAllister CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP were back in action at I-96 Speedway Friday night and all eyes were on the two-time GLSS Champion, Jared Horstman. So far in 2025, Horstman has been held out of victory lane in the Mitten State just one time; and the result was second. Rolling off alongside fellow Ohio driver, Jac Nickles, Horstman will technically get credit for leading all 25 laps around the track, but it wasn't a cake walk. Nickels gave everything he could to Horstman on the opening lap, in fact, the naked eye would struggle to accuratley say who led the opening lap at the line. Horstman settled into the top spot, but only for a moment before the first caution flag flew for Jay Steinebach who went up in smoke down the backstretch. Simultaneously, Mike Keegan and Scotty Thiel reported to the work area as the caution flew but were unable to return. Only three more laps were tallied before Chase Ridenour's No.38 lost power exiting turn two, drawing a yellow for the second time. Then, on the restart, Jett Mann made contact with the right rear of Ryan Ruhl, sending Mann for a wild flip off the top of turns one and two. Mann was reportedly checked and released from a nearby hospital after the crash. With 21 laps to go, the field was turned loose once again. Horstman held off Nickles who charged to the inside on the restart but couldn't get the run to get to the front. Meanwhile, Keith Sheffer, Jr, Dustin Daggett, and Max Stambaugh were in a tight battle that saw Sheffer go plus five on the night to finish on the podium yet again. Traffic would prove no issue for Horstman who cut through the backmarkers while maintaining his gap over Nickles. The win was the fourth of the season with GLSS and his 100th career sprint car victory. Dustin Daggett earned the Ti22 Performance Fast Qualifier Award. Daggett won the Engler Machine & Tool Heat Race 1. Horstman won Beacon & Bridge Markets Heat 2. Jac Nickles won MacAllister CAT Heat Race 3. Andy Tuenessen won the Operating Engineers 324 B-Main. Zac Broughman was the Hoosier Racing Tire Hard Charger gaining seven spots. The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is Friday, June 27th at Tri City Motor Speedway in Auburn, MI and Saturday, June 28th at Crystal Motor Speedway in Crystal, MI. Fans who can't make the trip can catch the action at www.GreatLakesSprints.Tv. For more information on GLSS, log onto www.GreatLakesSuperSprints.com. - SANDERS SLIPS PAST MCFADDEN IN FINAL CORNER TO TAKE SUPER DIRT CUP NARC PRELIM WIN
(6/20/25 - Andrew Kunas) Burlington, WA ... The second night of the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway delivered a finish as thrilling as the first, as Justin Sanders got his fourth NARC sprint car victory of the season Friday night with a last lap pass to get the $10,000 win. The reigning NARC "King of the West" champion started the 30-lap feature inside the second row and ran in third place for most of the race, while Washington sprint car great Jason Solwold led the opening six laps from the pole position. A bobble by Solwold exiting Turn 4 on the seventh circuit allowed Australian star James McFadden to get by to take the lead. McFadden, who started fourth, led from there and encountered traffic at times before timely cautions would clear the track for him. In one instance, Solwold was able to challenge McFadden and nearly passed him, but McFadden held on to the top spot. In the closing laps, Sanders found a groove, making the pass around Solwold for second with just three laps left. He then immediately went after Sanders. Coming around Turns 3 and 4, Sanders made the bottom of the track work, getting a run down the front stretch at the white flag. McFadden went low in Turns 1 and 2, but Sanders went top side and drove around him to take the lead entering the back stretch on the final lap. McFadden tried to run low into Turn 3, but Sanders barely slammed the door shut as they entered the turn, and McFadden couldn't find a way back by as Sanders took the victory in front of a thrilled Skagit Speedway crowd. "I think the bottom was going away in 1 and 2. Solwold got to James and got him searching, and I think it slowed up enough up there and I just airmailed it up top in 1 and 2," Sanders said. "I'm out of breath. I drove that thing as hard as I could. I just kinda put something together in those last five laps and like I said I just drove it as hard as I could. I'm in awe that I pulled that off." Sanders, the 2023 Dirt Cup winner, again praised his team, including owner Demo Mittry. This continued the strong run Sanders had been on recently aboard the Yuba Sutter Aviation-sponsored Mittry Motorsports No. 2x Fisher-powered KPC after a roller coaster spring. In the last couple of weeks, Sanders won the David Tarter Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway on June 7th, then finished Top 10 each night in NARC's Fastest Five Days in Motorsports last week, including three podium runs, and then getting fourth in the Thursday Dirt Cup preliminary before scoring the Friday victory. With the win, Sanders was fourth in overall points after the two preliminary nights in the special Dirt Cup points format and locked himself in Saturday's pole shuffle. McFadden, while disappointed with letting one slip away, still had a strong bounce back night after getting upside down twice in Thursday's main event, taking second place aboard the American Rock & Rent-sponsored Tarlton Motorsports No. 21t Kistler-powered Maxim. This continued his overall strong performance since jumping into that car over a week over, having won four of the five races in the Fastest Five Days. Tanner Holmes came from the tenth starting position and moved into the Top 5 as the race progressed. He eventually was in fourth place and in the last laps got Solwold to finish third aboard the Legacy Builder Supply-sponsored Holmes Racing No. 18t Rider-powered Triple X. After his fifth place run on Thursday and being second overall in points after the two preliminary nights, Holmes also locked himself into Saturday's pole shuffle. Solwold, the many-time Skagit Speedway champion and former World of Outlaws feature winner, finished fourth aboard the KarMart USA-sponsored Shaylen Raye Motorsports No. 18 Parker-powered Triple X. Joel Meyers Jr finished fifth aboard the Dirt Dudes Excavating-sponsored Willie Kahne No. 4 Shaver-powered Triple X. Trey Starks came from 12th to finish sixth and was top overall in the Dirt Cup points, and locking into the pole shuffle as a result. Coming from 15th to finish seventh, Shane Golobic also locked into the shuffle. Jesse Schlotfeldt came from 16th to finish eighth, followed by Scott Bogucki. Landon Brooks came out of the B-Main and advanced 13 positions from 23rd to finish tenth and earn the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award. Dominic Gorden won the Winters Performance Last Chance Qualifier, taking Justin Peck, Brooks and Dominic Scelzi with him to the Friday preliminary main event. Luke Didiuk won the C-Feature. Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Camden Robustelli, Justin Youngquist, Gorden, Cam Smith and Brent Marks. Jesse Schlotfeldt paced the 44-car field in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying, touring the 3/10-mile clay oval in 11.250 seconds. The 53rd Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup concludes Saturday with the main event paying $100,026 to win. Points from Thursday and Friday will be combined to largely set up lineups for Saturday's races. Starks, Holmes, Golobic and Sanders are locked into the pole shuffle and will be joined by the winners of the four qualifier races. - Chad Trout Gets First Williams Grove Sprint Win - Kevin Thomas Jr. Wins USAC
Mechanicsburg - Chad Trout of Dover got his elusive first career 410 sprint car win at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, taking home over $5,600 for the victory. The longtime oval supporter already owned four limited sprint wins at the track. In the USAC Eastern Storm 410 sprint car feature, Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Alabama, took the $6,000 win to score his third such career triumph at the speedplant in USAC action. The 25-lap 410 sprint car main would go non-stop with Trout leading every lap from the pole position. Second starter Austin Bishop chased the leader all through the event and although he was able to narrow Trout's advantage in traffic he was never able to mount a challenge for the win. Ryan Newton raced hard with Bishop for the second spot for the first half of the race before settling into third spot. Hard racing for the fourth spot took place during the final 10 laps as Troy Wagaman Jr., Brock Zearfoss, Justin Whittall, Lance Dewease and Freddie Rahmer all tried to secure the position, running just car lengths apart as they traversed the oval. Zearfoss held the spot for several laps and even challenged Newton for third at times but eventually fell victim to 10th starter Wagaman's advances. In the end Trout scored the win over Bishop, Newton, Wagaman and Zearfoss. Sixth through 10th went to Whittall, 17th starter Dewease, Rahmer, Chase Dietz and TJ Stutts. Heats went to Trout, Bishop and Newton with Jordan Thomas scoring the last chance race. The start of the 30-lap USAC main was marred by two red flags. The first occurred before a lap could be recorded for a flipping JT Ferry in the third turn. And on the ensuring attempt at a first lap, a double flip in the third turn by Abby Hohlbein and Mike Haggenbottom stopped action once more. Luckily all drivers escaped injury. Thomas led the first 21 laps after action got going with Jake Swanson chasing in the second spot. But Swanson lost the position with eight laps to go when USAC point leader Kyle Cummins of Princeton, Indiana, raced into second. Cummins was unable to challenge Thomas for the win however 10th starter Briggs Danner proved a challenge to Swanson late in the race after taking third with four laps to go. Thomas scored the win by .397 seconds over Cummins, Danner, Swanson and Justin Grant. Sixth through 10th went to Steve Drevicki, Hayden Reinbold, Mitchel Moles, Gunnar Setser and Kale Drake. Heats went to Daison Pursley, Justin Grant and Robert Ballou. Moles set fast time with a lap of 19.246 seconds. Feature Finishes 6/20/25 410 sprint cars, 25 laps: 1. Chad Trout, 2. Austin Bishop, 3. - Eddie Tafoya Jr. Returns to His Home Track, Perris Auto Speedway, This Saturday
Chino, CA - June 19, 2025 — Popular sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will return to action this Saturday night, June 21st, when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Perris Auto Speedway. The historic half-mile clay oval in Riverside County is considered the home track for both the 21-year-old series and the Chino Hills, California native. Saturday's event was originally scheduled to be Tafoya's sixth series appearance of the year at Perris. However, two events earlier in the season were canceled due to rain. That means this weekend marks just the fourth 2025 outing at the track, located less than 30 minutes from Tafoya's home. Tafoya, who drives the eye-catching #51T sprint car, recorded his best Perris finish of the year on April 5th when he placed eighth. He backed that up with a solid ninth-place run in the prestigious Salute to Indy on May 24th. His top finish overall in the USAC/CRA Series so far this year came at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway, where he finished fifth. Saturday's race will be Tafoya's 14th start of the 2025 season, spanning the USAC/CRA Series, the USAC National Sprint Car Series, and the Ultimate Sprint Car Series. His most recent appearance came two weeks ago when the Ultimate Series competed at Bakersfield Speedway. Tafoya recorded another top 10 finish when he placed ninth that night. Though Tafoya is not chasing points full-time in 2025, he has entered six of the first nine USAC/CRA races. Despite missing three events, he still sits 15th in the championship standings — a testament to his consistency and competitive performances. To see Tafoya in person on Saturday, spectator gates open at 5:00 p.m., and the first green flag will wave at 7:00. - Brody Roa Returns to Perris Auto Speedway This Saturday
Cypress, CA - June 19, 2025 — After a brief break from competition, veteran Southern California sprint car star Brody Roa is set to return to action this Saturday, June 21, when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its latest stop at its home track, Perris Auto Speedway. It will mark Roa's first race since competing with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series at Bakersfield Speedway on June 7. Roa, the 2023 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Champion, made headlines last year with back-to-back USCS wins on the old Bakersfield Speedway. But the June 7 event brought a new twist—while the track was still called Bakersfield Speedway, it had undergone major changes. Over the winter, the original facility was relocated to Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway complex, on the opposite side of town. The shift didn't just involve a change in venue. The track surface was reconfigured between turns two and three over the winter, presenting drivers with an unfamiliar challenge. Except for a couple of rainouts, Roa was racing a complete show there for the first time since October 15, 2022. Thus, it was essentially a new track for him. Despite the learning curve, the Garden Grove, California native showed his typical consistency. He qualified fifth in his group and finished second in his heat race. Driving his striking #91R, Roa started 10th in the main event and maneuvered through tricky conditions to secure a solid seventh-place finish. That run gave him five top-10 finishes in six starts so far in 2025. Roa's most recent outing at Perris came during the prestigious Salute to Indy on Memorial Day weekend, where he finished eighth. He previously captured the event title in 2021. With a more relaxed schedule in 2025, Roa is savoring the opportunity to race at select events like Saturday's showdown at Perris, where he remains a fan favorite and perennial threat to win. Spectator gates at Perris open at 5:00 p.m., and the first green flag will wave at 7:00.
