- HOWARD SHOOTS STRAIGHT AT GUNTOWN FOR THIRD STRAIGHT USAC WIN
USCS National point leader Dale Howard of Byhalia, MS closed in on the 2025 United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder Tour Presented By Hoosier Racing Tire 2025 National Championship with his third straight series win on Friday night in the 25-lap Feature Race at Pine Ridge Speedway.
- Wolff earns Modified win to headline Night 2 of USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 2, 2025) - Tyler Wolff capped Night of the 12th annual Summit USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway on Thursday night with a late move to grab the USRA Modified victory. Other feature winners as the four-night event continued were Chad Clancy in the USRA B Mods, Jaylen Wettengel in USRA Stock Cars and Scott Dobel in the Hobby Stocks. A total of 259 cars checked into the pits in the four competing divisions on the second of four nights of action. Wolff was ready to pounce when given the opportunity after a late-race restart and the Fayetteville, Arkansas, driver went on to lead the final six laps of the USRA Modified main event. It was his second Modified win of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway, where he also had two Late Model feature wins. "I'm definitely not gonna complain. It's a great place to be," Wolff said. "There's a bunch of people that help us and it makes it even better when we get to come out there" to victory lane. Wolff beat Harley Dais, who wound up second for the second straight night. Scotty Roberts took the early going from his third-starting spot and set the pace until lap four, when Williams powered past out of turn four to take. The fourth-starting Williams quickly opened a 1.1-second lead over Tyler Wolff as Roberts slipped to third. Williams maintained his lead at about one second as action settled into a prolonged green-flag run, with Wolff 2.5 seconds clear of Roberts. Williams' lead was nearly two seconds as he caught lapped traffic by lap 16 and that traffic proved a challenge for the leader. Wolff began to cut into the margin when caution flew on lap 17 to bunch the field with eight to go. The restart was all Wolff needed as he took over the lead on lap 19, passing Williams coming off turn four. It was all Wolff the rest of the way as he ran away to beat Harley Dais by 2.1 seconds. Williams, slipping to third with two to go, settled for that spot with Wednesday-night feature winner Brandon Davis fourth and Brandon Givens coming home fifth. Clancy earns USRA B-Mods win: Chad Clancy of Polo, Mo., took over the lead on lap five and never gave it up in capturing the 20-lap USRA B-Mod main event. He beat hard-charging Kris Jackson, who made up 13 positions. Trevor Drake, who started third, took the lead on lap two away from pole-starter Daniel Harris. Clancy, who started seventh, made his move to the front on lap five to make it three leaders in the early going. Clancy rolled to a 1.1-second lead over Colson Kirk by lap 10 with Kris Jackson advancing to third after starting 14th. Jackson's charge continued two laps later as he drove around Kirk for second. Clancy kept pouring it on as he weaved through lapped traffic, expanding his margin got 2.3 seconds with four remaining. Clancy finished it off by maintaining that margin at the finish over Jackson with Kirk settling for third. Drake came home fourth and Cody King took fifth. "The car was awesome," Clancy said after improving one spot from his runner-up finish the night before. "There's a lot of good cars here and to be able to do this is awesome." Wettengel takes Stock Cars feature: A wild, caution-plagued USRA Stock Cars feature saw Jaylen Wettengel of Topeka, Kansas, pick up the win as he came from the 20th starting position. Eddie Ingram led the first lap with Boone Evans shooting to the front on the inside to complete lap two. Caution on lap five took away Evans' .906-second margin over second-place Travis Shipman. Evans' lead was .233 seconds over Jaylen Wettengel when another in a series of cautions flew on lap 12. This restart saw Tyler Cadwallader drive around Evans on the outside and emerge with the lead, just before a multi-car pileup on the front stretch, which included Evans, brought out another yellow flag. Wettengel emerged with the lead on the ensuing restart with Cadwallader regaining it on lap 15. Two laps later, Troy Hansmeier went from third to first to become the race's sixth leader - but Cadwallader took a spin in turn four to bring out another caution. Wettengel made the winning pass on lap 19 and held off Hansmeier for the win, prevailing by .858 seconds. Derek Green finished third after starting 26th with Josh Cain fourth and Clancy fifth. Hobby Stocks win to Dobel: Scott Dobel of Manly, Iowa, took the lead on lap four and went on to lead the rest of the way for the USRA Hobby Stocks feature win. Dobel started fifth and he went on to beat Arthur Schott by just over a second. The third-starting Dustin Gulbrandson wasted no time grabbing the lead, taking it before the first lap was complete. The USRA Hobby Stocks national points leader lost the top spot to Dobel on lap four and the first caution flew the next time around as Dobel led by a half-second. Dobel continued his march after the restart, opening up a 1.5-second lead at the halfway mark on lap nine. He had a four-second lead when a lap-15 caution gave the challengers a chance. Dobel was able to hang on to beat Arthur Schott by 1.2 seconds. "It's always good to be standing in victory lane," Dobel said. "Once we got under Gulbrandson on the bottom I wasn't coming off until someone showed me something." Keven Lacy was third, Parker Anderson fourth and Jeremy Crimmins wound up fifth. - Davis, Turner, Custer score Night One wins in USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 1, 2025) - The 12th annual Summit USRA Nationals kicked off on Wednesday night at Lucas Oil Speedway with each of the three feature events coming down to the final laps. Brandon Davis emerged as the USRA Modified winner, Shadren Turner captured USRA B-Mod honors and Justin Custer came out of seemingly nowhere for the USRA Stock Cars win. A total of 216 cars checked into the pits in the three divisions on the first of four nights of action. Davis, of Hayfield, Minn., took over the lead with six laps remaining from Terry Phillips and went on to capture the USRA Modified opening-night feature win. Phillips started up front and set a blistering early pace, opening a 1.4-second lead over Bobby Williams after five laps. The veteran from Springfield was maintaining that same gap by lap 10 as Davis was pressuring Williams for second. Just as the leaders were catching lapped traffic, one of the slower cars spun to bring out a caution on lap 11. Davis took over second after the restart and began to close in on Phillips, pulling alongside on lap 15. Phillips' lead was .184 seconds as a lap-16 caution slowed the action. Davis finally forged past Phillips going to the inside of turn one on lap 19. Davis quickly drew off to a 1.3-second lead in just two laps and rolled from there. "When I got around Bobby Williams on that one restart, I noticed 'TP' was kind of struggling at times through the middle, just a little bit," Davis said. "I was just waiting for an opening and could just stick a little bit better on entry. It was fun racing TP. He could have the crappiest race car and he could still get around this place and be fast. He's so crafty here." Davis beat runner-up Harley Dais, who passed Phillips on lap 22, by 2.89 seconds. Phillips settled for third with Brandon Givens fourth and Williams fifth. Turner emerges in USRA B-Mod thriller: Shadren Turner of St. Joseph, Mo., won a thriller over Chad Clancy and Tim Karrick for the USRA B-Mod feature win. Casey Thomas led the first lap before Karrick took over on lap two. Karrick and Chad Clancy were side-by-side for the lead when caution flew on lap nine. Clancy took the lead after the restart on lap 10 before another caution slow the action with Karrick second and Shadren Turner third. Those three diced for the lead over the next several laps before Turner took the lead on lap 15. The fourth-starting Turner held on from there, beating Clancy by just .179 seconds with Karrick right behind in third. Tyler Kidwell finished fourth with JC Morton coming home in fifth. Custer wins Stock Cars feature with last-lap pass: Justin Custer of Liberty, Mo., made a last-lap pass to steal the USRA Stock Cars feature from race-long leader Myles Michel. Custer rallied throughout a caution-filled race from a 25th-starting position. Custer took advantage of a late restart to complete his charge and overtake four cars over the final four laps. He beat Michel by one car length. Pole-starting Tyler Cadwallader was eliminated before an official lap was complete when he went upside down out of turn three during a multi-car pileup, causing a red flag, at the start of the feature. Michehl, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, grabbed the lead after the restart, opening a one-second gap over Keller by lap five. The leader extended the margin to 1.8 seconds by the midway point on lap 10. Michehl kept gradually pulling away from there, holding a 2.2-second command over Keller with five to go. Keller had his hands full with Mason Beck, who pressured him for second when the race's complex changed with a lap-16 caution when fifth-running Josh Cain slowed to a stop in turn two. Four cautions flew with only one lap completed, leaving Michehl leading Keller and Mason Beck with three to go. But it was Custer who pulled off the heroics to grab the win. Jaylen Wettengel wound up third with Beck fourth and Rodney Schweizer was fifth. - After a 3rd Place at Ventura, Brent Sexton Heads to Mohave Valley Raceway
Lakeside, CA — October 1, 2025 — After a week of R&R at the river, Sexton Gatlin Racing is gearing up for Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway this Saturday night, October 4th, as the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series continues. The outing comes just two weeks after Brent Sexton scored a career-best full-size sprint car third-place finish in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series at Ventura Raceway. The night at Ventura began with qualifying, when 21-year-old SGR driver Grant Sexton clicked off a 12.748 lap, good for fourth in his group. With the track slowing down, only one car in the final two groups bested his mark, giving him the sixth-fastest time overall. Brent, qualifying in the final group, clocked a 13.180 lap—second in his group but only 11th overall. In preliminary action, Grant started and finished fourth in his heat, while Brent advanced from second to third in his. That set the stage for the 30-lap feature, with Grant rolling off seventh and Brent from ninth. The early laps saw little change, though Grant climbed to challenge for fifth just past halfway. Then came disaster: the two cars in front of him tangled, with one flipping and landing on Grant's machine. The damage ended his night early, leaving him with a frustrating 17th-place finish. Meanwhile, Brent narrowly avoided a first-turn incident on lap one and went to work. Restarting sixth after Grant's misfortune, he steadily picked off cars. By the white flag, he was up to third. A late yellow set up a green-white-checkered finish, and Brent dove low to briefly challenge for second. Twice he nosed ahead, but the runner-up of most of the race reclaimed the inside line on the final turn, forcing Brent to settle for a hard-fought third. The result was Brent's best full-size sprint car finish of 2025, topping his previous best of fifth at Ocean Speedway in March. This week's return to Mohave Valley brings back fond memories for the team. In what many consider Brent's finest lightning sprint victory, in October 2022, he rebounded from an off-track excursion to steal the lead on the final lap. Coming off turn four to a roaring crowd, he edged ahead at the line by a car length, with SGR teammates AJ Bender and Dalton Sexton close behind in second and third. Gates at Mohave Valley Raceway open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Adult admission is $25, kids 6-12 are $15, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are cash only at the gate (no ATMs onsite). Concessions, souvenirs, and the beer garden accept cash and cards. For more details, visit mohavevalleyraceway.com or call (928) 346-6000. - Arenz drops curtain on remarkable 2025 campaign
(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) October 1, 2025 - Travis Arenz and the Travis Arenz Motorsports Team crew capped a highly memorable 2025 season with the Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series curtain closer as part of the eighth annual Wisconsin Sprint Car Championships at The Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis., on Saturday, Sept. 27. The 18th-year racer began the night by qualifying a strong third in the 33-car field with a lap of 11.554 seconds. Arenz then placed fifth in the third IRA heat race to earn a dash spot. The 2021 and 2022 Midwest Sprint Car Association and Plymouth Dirt Track Racing champion then placed fourth after starting third in the second four-lap dash to gain the eighth starting position in the 30-lap Rick Schmidt Memorial main event. Arenz's participation in the main event proved to be short-lived, as he was involved in a four-car incident in turn two on lap three, which ended both his night and the 2025 season. "The night started out on a positive note as I ran a third quick qualifying lap, but the night quickly started to take a turn in the opposite direction," Arenz said. "With hurting the equipment I have in the last few weeks, I had to run my backup car again. I describe that car as temperamental and it really challenges my skills as a driver. It requires very technical adjustments and really makes you work for it. We fell back a few spots in the heat race, but I was able to get back into a transfer spot, which allowed a starting position in the dash. Very early on in the feature, I was, unfortunately, caught up in a wreck with nowhere to go, ending our night early." Arenz capped the 2025 campaign with three A-main victories, five podium showings, 14 top-10 finishes, six heat race victories, 13 dash appearances, three dash victories, and one fast qualifier award in 24 completed events. The clear highlight of both his 2025 season and his entire racing career was a highly improbable $26,000 victory against the biggest names in the Winged Sprint Car business with Kubota High Limit Racing at the Rayce Rudeen Foundation event at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wis., on Thursday, June 4. Arenz also tallied two IRA A-main victories at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, May 17, and 141 Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 13, to finish 2025 with a career-high three 410 Sprint Car victories in a season. On the downside, mechanical issues and on-track incidents forced Arenz to retire from a handful of main events early and to miss IRA events at Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Jackson Motorplex on Saturday, Sept. 20. He ended the 2025 campaign eighth in the final IRA point standings. - Thunderbowl Raceway hosts penultimate SCCT event this Saturday
Tulare, CA…The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour is set to make its annual October trip to the Central Valley for this Saturday's "Chris & Brian Faria Memorial" at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare. It marks the penultimate show of the SCCT campaign and is the final opportunity for drivers to get laps at the track prior to Trophy Cup 31 on October 16th-18th. Purse info and more on the lucrative event can be found via www.tularetrophycup.com The Faria Memorial this Saturday October 4th also features the NARC 410 Sprint Cars and has long been a cornerstone on the Stone Chevrolet Buick GMC Thunderbowl Raceway schedule over the years. Chris Faria was an up and coming driver who was the youngest of five children to Danny Sr. & Arlet Faria. He grew up on their farm in Tipton and was known as the prankster of the family. Chris unfortunately lost his life at the age of 21 during a farming accident and his memory has been kept alive with a memorial race at the Thunderbowl Raceway ever since. Brian was the oldest of the five Faria children and was taken from us in January of 2006 during an accident while driving on a highway. Brian enjoyed helping out with the track preparation at the Thunderbowl, as he drove the water truck and the grader among other things. "We look forward to hosting the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial on Saturday," track GM Josh Miller said. "It's always one of the big events at Thunderbowl Raceway and having both SCCT and NARC should make for a great night of racing. We hope everyone will come out on October 4th and then return for the Trophy Cup in a couple weeks." With two events remaining in the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour season, it continues to be Austin Wood sitting atop the standings. The 15-year-old from Sacramento hung tough to record an eight-place finish during the most recent race in Petaluma and looks for another consistent outing at Thunderbowl Raceway this weekend. Wood ran eighth at Tulare during a local event in May. Yuba City's Seth Standley finished right behind Wood in the main event at Petaluma Speedway and goes into Tulare 47-markers back of the lead. Standley will be searching for a strong night at the Thunderbowl to close the gap. Rounding out the top five going into the penultimate round of the campaign are Bozeman, Montana's Cole Schroeder, Redding's Max Mittry and Marysville's Dawson Hammes. Comprising the remainder of the top 10 are Brentwood's Adrianna Demartini, Santa Rosa's Tyler Cato, Elk Grove's Bubba Decaires, Marysville's Carson Hammes and El Cajon's Braden Chiaramonte. The SCCT stop at Thunderbowl Raceway last year was captured by Lincoln's Tanner Carrick over Central Valley racer Caeden Steele and San Jose's Tim Kaeding. Tickets and Details: Adult Grandstand tickets for the Faria Memorial/ Trophy Cup Tune-Up at Thunderbowl Raceway this Saturday October 4 cost $35, while Bleacher tickets are $30. Senior and child pricing is also available. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on race day. The front grandstand gate will open at 4pm with the pit meeting held at 5pm and cars on track at 5:30. Hot laps, Sierra Foothills Wine Services qualifying, and racing will follow. The muffler rule will follow track protocols at Thunderbowl Raceway, which mirrors the NARC 410 Series rule. Flowmaster, SpinTech, Schoenfeld 14272735-78 or Extreme mufflers only. The Stone Chevrolet Buick GMC Thunderbowl Raceway is located at the Tulare County Fairgrounds on the corner of Bardsley and K Streets at 620 South K Street Tulare, California 93274. - Johnson looks to continue dream Modified season at USRA Nationals this week at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 30, 2025) - Way back in March, Houston Johnson set a goal to pursue his first USRA National Championship in the Modified division. What a year it's been, with that title seemingly a mere formality away as this week's 12th annual Summit USRA Nationals get ready to fire up at Lucas Oil Speedway. Johnson, a 26-year-old second generation racer from Kansas City, has 20 Modified feature wins in 43 starts in 2025 and 26 wins overall including a Late Model. Entering the Wednesday opener to the four-night marathon at Wheatland, he holds a 547-point USRA lead. "Technically, Brandon Davis could jump me if he wins all four nights and starts like 19th or 20th in a couple of them," Johnson said. "If anybody could do it, it's him." So while Johnson will hold off on popping the proverbial cork until it's official, the journey to the brink of a championship has been nothing short of a dream season in a Bloodline Race Car he purchased slightly used from Brandon Givens. "I took the car down to Terry (Phillips) and he helped me out and he's always just a phone call away if I have a question," Johnson said of Philips, the long-time racer and Bloodlines chassis founder based in Springfield. "He is a wealth of knowledge." Johnson has dominated the competition this season at his home track, I-35 Speedway in Winston where he has 16 feature wins. He feels good about his chances coming to Wheatland, where he won a preliminary-night feature at last year's USRA Nationals and ran a solid sixth in a July 3rd appearance this season with the Heartland Modified Tour. Dedication and consistency have gone hand-in-hand after Johnson set his goal. Shortly after he and wife Cassidy found out they would become first-time parents this November. "Last year I ran quite a bit at Humboldt and began branching out during the year," Johnson said of how 2024 became a building block season. "By end of the year, I thought if I had pushed for it earlier in the season … I didn't win enough but I could have been top three. I think I ended up fifth. "When my wife and I found out in March that we were expecting our first child in November, I knew this was the last year that I could fully dive at it before some other priorities come up. By far it's been my best season. I'm a very routine-oriented person. On Friday nights, Tulsa was closest place to race Modifieds most of the year. It was unfortunate that I would drive by Lakeside and Humboldt and places that used to have A Mods. "But I put in the effort to go down there, then get up early and re-prepare the car for Saturday. Then get it washed up and cleaned up on Sunday, go to work Monday through Friday, get home from work and work on it. For me I've always put in the effort. People don't always see the effort behind the scenes. You can't have DNFs and luck is a big part of it, but preparation has been one of the biggest things and making sure I'm not missing stuff that would cost you … keeping up on maintenance and parts." Johnson began racing at 14, but was a fan of the sport from the time his parents purchased I-35 Speedway when he was in grade school. His dad, Mike, had raced for several years prior to that. Houston Johnson said he drove a Grand National at 14 and got into a Modified a few years later. He admitted to getting discouraged by his results and was about ready to give it up and seek another class before winning on opening night in 2021, his first Modified feature triumph. "I went on to win the championship that year. It's kind off weird how stuff clicks," Johnson said. "I got better at watching film, watching race videos. I'm a race fan first. I love watching racing. USMTS, Lucas Oil Late Models, you can learn from watching the guys that run those things." Now Johnson is one to verge to claim a USRA National Championship while hoping to visit victory lane this week. Johsnon's crew members include Trevor Brownlee and Tony Kromeich. Sponsors are Carpenter's Classics, Molle Auto Group, KS Engineering, Trenton Coca-Cola Bottling, Shane Roach Concrete, Premier Lubricants, Precision Performance Racing Suspensions, TB Designs and Tire Demon by Lovetap - Randy Ainsworth. USRA Nationals action kicks off Tuesday night with an open practice session on from 6-9 p.m. Spectator admission will be free in the grandstands with pit passes $30 ($15 for kids 6-10). Five-day pit passes are $170 and ($80 for ages 6-10). Everyone purchasing pit passes can save time upon arrival by signing the waiver online at https://lucasoilspeedway.speedwaiver.com/uokhv. - NARC BEGINS HOME STRETCH WITH CHRIS & BRIAN FARIA MEMORIAL AT TULARE
(9/30/25 - Andrew Kunas) Tulare, CA ... The closing stretch of the 2025 NARC King of the West sprint car season is upon us. The first of four races in five weeks is this Saturday as the NARC teams tackle the famous Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare for the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial. This action-packed racing card will also feature the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360's. The race is one of the cornerstone events at the popular 1/3-mile clay oval. First contested in 2002, the event honors a pair of brothers from the Faria family, longtime participants in California racing. Chris Faria, who was an up and coming racer, passed away after a farming accident in 1993. His older brother Brian, who was active behind the scenes at Thunderbowl Raceway, tragically passed away in early 2006 in a traffic accident, and Brian's name was soon put alongside his brother's for this race. The 2025 race was originally scheduled for April 26th, but Mother Nature interfered and forced its postponement. NARC and Thunderbowl Raceway officials agreed to reschedule the event for October 4th to start a busy stretch to finish NARC's season. The event, held at one of California's most challenging dirt tracks, has long been looked forward to by NARC competitors and fans, and the list of past winners of the race reads like a who's who of west coast sprint car racing. Jason Meyers, a future World of Outlaws champion, won the inaugural event in 2002. National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Brent Kaeding won it twice in the latter years of his legendary career. A young kid named Kyle Larson, years before the NASCAR world got to know him, was the 2010 winner of the race. NARC champions such as D.J. Netto and Kyle Hirst are also past winners. Last year's event, ironically postponed by weather to a later date also, was won by Cole Macedo aboard the Tarlton Motorsports No. 21. WHO TO WATCH Speaking of NARC champions, former series champ D.J. Netto, who lives just down the road from Thunderbowl Raceway in Hanford, holds a slim 14-point lead over another former champion in Sean Becker of Oroville. Netto has two NARC wins to his credit this season, but hasn't won since May. Netto, however, has seen success in Tulare over the years, including winning the 2015 edition of the Faria. Netto hopes his past success at Thunderbowl Raceway will continue as he seeks his second NARC championship. After winning six NARC races during the summer with Australian ace James McFadden in cockpit, the Tarlton Motorsports team will welcome back Oregon's Tanner Holmes, who piloted the car back in the spring. Holmes was victorious in NARC competition with the Tarlton team in May when he took the first of the Twin 20's at the Morrie Williams Memorial in Tulare. After piloting his family's car during the summer, Holmes will rejoin the Tarlton's and is hoping for a repeat of May this Saturday. Between Holmes and McFadden, the seven NARC wins by the Tarlton Motorsports No. 21 team are tied for the most this season with the Mittry Motorsports No. 2x, all of theirs with Justin Sanders behind the wheel. The second of the Twin 20's in May was won by Caeden Steele, and it was the young Fresno-area driver's first NARC win. Steele is another driver hoping that past history will repeat itself on Saturday. Sean Becker, despite running second in points, is winless this season, but has been competitive all season and is coming off a podium run at the last NARC race at Placerville Speedway on September 6th. Another driver expected this Saturday include Campbell's Bud Kaeding, a winner in August at the Johnny Key Classic at Ocean Speedway. Kaeding enters the night third in the points, just 23 tallies back of Netto with four races remaining. Also expected this Saturday are Dominic Scelzi of Fresno, Dominic Gorden of Clovis, Mariah Ede of Fresno, Gauge Garcia of Lemoore, Shane Golobic of Fremont, Billy Aton of Benicia, John Clark of Windsor, Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton, Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Landon Brooks of Rio Oso, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Cannon McIntosh from Bixby, OK. Arlington. Washington's Jesse Schlotfeldt will be making the journey from the Pacific Northwest also to join NARC for its remaining races. Schlotfeldt won his first career NARC event in June at Cottage Grove Speedway. FAN INFO It will be ALL sprint cars for the fans on Saturday as NARC will be joined by the 360 Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Tickets will be available at the front gate. Grandstand tickets are $35, and $33 for seniors. Bleacher seats are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors and $15 for kids 12 and under. Pit passes are $45. Front gates open at 4:00 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled for 5:45 with qualifying at 6:00 and racing beginning at 7:00 p.m. Thunderbowl Raceway is located along K Street at the Tulare County Fairgrounds. - Williams Grove Open Prelim Tradition Continues Friday - 2025 event to be run October 3
Mechanicsburg - As much as the J & S Classics National Open at Williams Grove Speedway deserves its place in sprint car lore as it celebrates its 63rd running on October 4 with a $75,000 payday, the National Open Preliminary race itself also has a place at the history table. Although not an annual event, the National Open Preliminary race will hold its head high and celebrate its 39th running on October 3. The preliminary was first run in 1980 with Keith Kauffman taking the win aboard the Weikert Livestock No. 29. That preliminary win would be the first of two for Weikert in the race with Doug Wolfgang scoring again a few years later in 1985. Noted author and television commentator of today, driver Brad Doty of Apple Creek, Ohio was lured East back in 1981 and picked up what would be his first of two career Williams Grove wins in the preliminary before suffering career ending injuries in a racing crash a few years later. The event has only been lost to weather eight times over the years and on 10 occasions the preliminary winner has swept both National Open races, going on to score the coveted big prize in the Open itself. Sweeps came in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2011, 2017 and in 2022 at the respective hands of Lynn Paxton, Wolfgang, Stevie Smith, Steve Kinser, Mark Kinser, Lance Dewease, Sammy Swindell, Jason Myers, David Gravel and Lance Dewease. And that sweep by Paxton in 1982 was surrounded by considerable controversy stemming from the preliminary race. The Williams Grove record books actually show a tie for the preliminary win between both Paxton and Ohio's Dave Blaney on September 17. A young Blaney was leading, headed for his first career Grove win on that night when he ran into mechanical problems as he raced off of the fourth turn toward the checkers. Veteran Paxton was trailing and gaining fast as Blaney tried to limp home and the scorers documented his No. 10 as crossing the finish line first. However unrest abounded regarding that decision and a picture of the finish taken at the line produced the next day clearly showed Paxton crossing very close but definitely first. Thus both drivers were paid for and credited with a victory and Paxton could go on to score the weekend sweep with Grove career wins 38 and 39. No driver has been able to put up big numbers in the preliminary race over the years unlike within its big brother National Open wherein World of Outlaws driver Donny Schatz is going for an amazing seventh event title in this year's race. Rather, in the preliminary no driver holds more than a trio of wins with Kauffman, Steve Kinser, Gravel and Dewease all holding that distinction. Before the World of Outlaws began sanctioning the preliminary in 1989, the race was contested once as an All Stars Circuit of Champions contest with Maynard Yingst the winner in 1986. Today and for many years now the National Open Preliminary at Williams Grove is run as a separate and stand-alone show aside from the Open itself. However for a number of years as an outlaws race, the top four finishers in the preliminary race were automatically locked into the next night's National Open. This was standard procedure under World of Outlaws sanctioning rules for two-day shows for many seasons. In the 2006 running of the event, Washington state driver Jason Solwold made speedway and outlaws history with a preliminary night win. Up to that point in outlaws history at the track, every sanctioned race ever run had been scored by either a series regular or a clear member of the home team PA Posse. Solwold's drive to victory made him the first true independent driver to ever win a Williams Grove outlaws feature main. Another piece of history from the National Open preliminary comes from 2018 when the "Fresno Phenom," Giovanni Scelzi crossed the country for an upset win on September 28. Scelzi's victory etched his name in the record books as the youngest driver ever to win a sprint car race at the historic venue at the ripe old age of 16. In 2021, NASCAR star Kyle Larson stopped at Williams Grove and copped the preliminary before going on to claim the season title on NASCAR's top circuit. The 2022 version of the race, won by Dewease, ended up being the shortest in history at 10 laps after the race was called official by outlaws gurus thanks to persistent, intermittent light rain. In both 2023 and 2024 the preliminary mains were postponed to Saturday night thanks to drizzle one year and fog the next. In 2023 the make-up was completed after the National Open itself with Brad Sweet scoring his second outlaws win of the year at Williams Grove while Buddy Kofoid romped to the win in 2024 in an event contested before the full Saturday program. The 39th running of the 25-lap National Open Preliminary gets underway at 7:30 on October 3. The winner will receive $12,000. Admission prices for Friday's program are $40 for adults and $20 for youth. Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for FREE at Williams Grove Speedway. . Fireworks will be part of the program. Keep up to date on all the latest speedway news and information by visiting the oval's official website at www.williamsgrove.com or by visiting the oval on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
