- WESTBROOK BECOMES ALL-TIME SOS WINS LEADER WITH BUXTON VICTORY
MERLIN, Ont. (July 12, 2025) - Dylan Westbrook had a record-setting night on Saturday at Buxton Speedway with the Southern Ontario Sprints series. The driver from Scotland, Ontario set a new single lap track record in his heat race and capped the night off with a victory that moved him to the top of the all-time SOS win list. Ryan Turner and Skyler Evans earned front row starting positions for the 25 lap A-Main, and Evans quickly opened a commanding lead. Westbrook moved forward and began to reel in the 14-year-old leader as traffic came into play. Westbrook took advantage when Evans slipped high in turn two and took over the top spot, while Evans later spun. Westbrook led the rest of the race unchallenged and took the 33rd Southern Ontario Sprints series feature win of his career. The win moved Rick Wilson to second on the all-time list after decades at the top. Turner took the runner-up spot, followed by championship leader Darren Dryden. DJ Christie recovered from trouble in his heat race to finish fourth, while Alex Bergeron rounded out the top five. Ryan Turner claimed the Ackland Insurance Quick Time Award and set a new Buxton Speedway time trial record in the process, while DJ Christie was The Drivers Project Hard Charger Award winner. Turner's lap of 13.348 seconds is the new time trial standard at Buxton, while Westbrook's lap of 13.138 seconds in his heat race is the fastest recorded at the Southwestern Ontario speedplant. The next SOS event is co-sanctioned with the Great Lakes Super Sprints series and scheduled for August 23 at Buxton Speedway. - FARNHAM CLAIMS CUNNINGHAM MEMORIAL AT MERRITVILLE
THOROLD, Ont. (June 21, 2025) - Merrittville Speedway welcomed the Southern Ontario Sprints series back to the track on Saturday night for the Gary Cunningham Memorial. Matt Farnham found victory lane after an entertaining race. Baily Heard started on the pole with Mike Bowman on his outside to start the 25 lap A-Main. Heard led the first eight laps with Farnham and Bowman in hot pursuit. Farnham's bid for the lead allowed Bowman to follow him through, and Heard then fell into the clutches of DJ Christie. Christie was on the charge and got past Heard on lap 17, but a courageous move on Bowman for second did not work out. Christie spun and brought out the yellow flag, creating a dash to the finish. Farnham looked to have the race in hand, but a spinning car with four laps to go almost spelled disaster for the Western New York driver. Farnham was able to avoid a collision and stayed up front to take the win by 0.940 seconds. Bowman took the runner-up spot, followed by Heard, fifth row starter Josh Hansen, and championship points leader Darren Dryden. Farnham also claimed the Ackland Insurance Quick Time Award, while Jacob Dykstra was The Drivers Project Hard Charger Award winner. Next on the SOS schedule is a doubleheader weekend with $5,000-to-win Gold Crown Super Series events on Friday, June 27 at Ohsweken Speedway and Saturday, June 28 at Brighton Speedway. - Long Haul Award Added to June 7 SOS Buxton Speedway Purse
TILBURY, Ont. (June 2, 2025) - The Southern Ontario Sprints series and Tilbury Wraps & Signage are pleased to announce a $100 Long Haul Award for the team travelling the greatest distance for Saturday's race at Buxton Speedway. "With today's high travel costs for race teams, we wanted to do what we could to help the sport," Tilbury Wraps & Signage owner Cody Bechard stated. "I'm proud to sponsor the 'Long Haul' award at Buxton Speedway. This track is where it all started for me; watching race cars here years ago is what first got me hooked, and that passion eventually turned into a career. "At Tilbury Wraps & Signage, we create custom vehicle wraps, signage, and print materials - your success, wrapped in quality. This is our way of saying thank you to all the race teams for the kilometres you travel and the hard work you put in. It means a lot to give back to the sport and the community that inspired me in the first place." "We are pleased that another local business has stepped up to support our series and its teams," noted SOS president Peter Turford. "If not for the support of some of Ontario's small businesses, we could not offer the teams the purses that we do." More information about Tilbury Wraps & Signage is available at www.tilburyws.ca A $5,000 prize awaits the winner of the inaugural SOS Gold Crown Super Series event on Saturday, June 7 at Buxton Speedway, while each A-Main starter will earn at least $500 from the $18,000 purse. - $5,000-TO-WIN GOLD CROWN SUPER SERIES OPENER NEXT UP FOR SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS
ST. MARYS, Ont. (May 5, 2025) - One of the highest-paying events in the history of Buxton Speedway is next up on the 2025 Southern Ontario Sprints series schedule! A $5,000 prize awaits the winner of the inaugural SOS Gold Crown Super Series event on Saturday, June 7 at the Chatham-Kent oval, while each A-Main starter will earn at least $500. Four events at four different tracks are part of the Gold Crown Super Series, including June 7 at Buxton Speedway, June 27 at Ohsweken Speedway, June 28 at Brighton Speedway, and October 4 at Merrittville Speedway. Thanks to the efforts of Nitro 54 Variety, Tammy 10 Media, and Ackland Insurance, all four of these events will pay $5,000-to-win and $500-to-start, with a total purse of almost $18,000 each night. The series is designed to provide maximum value for fans, teams, promoters, and sponsors. "It is widely recognized that owning a 360 Sprint Car in Ontario can be challenging, with unfavorable exchange rates as well as the potential tariff costs," noted SOS owner Peter Turford. "This is our move to help our teams fight the never-ending costs battle. "When combined with Ohsweken Speedway's high-paying events throughout the season culminating with the Northern Sprint Car Nationals, the co-sanctioned event Great Lakes Super Sprints and Southern Ontario Sprints at Buxton on August 23, as well as the Empire Super Sprints series events at Ohsweken, Brighton, Brockville, and Cornwall, there are now several opportunities for teams to compete for higher purses throughout the season in the province of Ontario." Mike Bowman currently leads the SOS points standings thanks to his win at the Merrittville Speedway Spring Sizzler. - BOWMAN TAKES SPRING SIZZLER WIN AT MERRITTVILLE
THOROLD, Ont. (April 26, 2025) - The Southern Ontario Sprints series opened the 2025 season at Merrittville Speedway's Spring Sizzler on Saturday. Mike Bowman took the win on a chilly evening. Bowman and Baily Heard made up the front row for the 25 lap feature, but only two laps were completed before Joe Trenca and Alex Bergeron tangled to bring out a yellow flag. Bowman stayed up front after two more yellows for spins by Dylan Westbrook and Ashton VanEvery. Darren Dryden took the second spot away from Heard after the VanEvery spin on lap 12, and stayed with Bowman through the second half of the race. Bowman had to fight off challenges from Dryden as the pair raced through traffic, until a spin by Matt Farnham with two laps remaining brought out the yellow flag. The subsequent single-file restart gave Bowman a chance to lock down the win, and he drove on to claim his first 360 Sprint Car win at Merrittville; all of Bowman's previous 360 Sprint Car wins had come at Ohsweken Speedway. Dryden took the runner-up position, while Heard rounded out the podium with his best career finish. Todd Hoddick and DJ Christie took the remaining spots in the top five, while Jordan Poirier, Ryan Turner, Dylan Westbrook, Allan Downey, and Eric Gledhill finished in the top ten. DJ Christie claimed the Ackland Insurance Quick Time Award, while Travis Cunningham was The Drivers Project Hard Charger Award winner. 14-year-old rookie Skylar Evans made his Sprint Car debut on Saturday, running second fastest in his Timed Hot Lap group and advancing from 20th to finish 14th in the feature. A total of 22 drivers from Ontario, Quebec, and New York made the trip to Merrittville. The SOS organization would like to thank all the fans, track officials, and race teams who braved cold temperatures and a questionable weather forecast to put on a great show. Next on the SOS schedule is a Gold Crown Super series race at Buxton Speedway on June 7 paying $5,000-to-win and $500-to-start.
