- SOS ANNOUNCES LS ENGINE OPTION
ST. MARYS, Ont. (October 21, 2025) - In an effort to make 360 Sprint Car racing in Southern Ontario more affordable, the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) will be allowing a spec General Motors (GM) LS-3 racing engine for the 2026 racing season. The engine will feature an aluminum block and heads and - based on current pricing - will have an out-the-door maximum cost of $26,000 CAD. This engine is not meant to make obsolete or replace the current 360 engine program already in place; it is to allow teams a lower-cost alternative to compete at the 360 level. The target for the engine will be 640 horsepower; while that is shy of the current 700-plus horsepower engines, it is expected that the LS engine's 75-pound weight advantage will offset most of the power differential. The engine will utilize aftermarket components in several areas, but will use an aluminum block and cylinder heads as supplied from GM. To ease the transition for any interested 602 Crate Sprint Car teams, the engine has been designed to use the same Holley carburetor and fuel pump system that is in current use in the Crate division. A prototype engine has been developed by DSE Performance and successfully run in late-season competition by Jamie Turner. In its first race with the Ontario Traditional Sprints series, Turner finished second in the feature event. In its only SOS race at Merrittville on Oct 4, Jamie started 25th with the engine and had advanced four positions when brake issues halted the team after eight laps. The three leading Sprint Car engine builders in Ontario are all involved in the rules package development. This group includes DSE Performance, Leitch Performance Engines, and Klotz Engine Machine Shop - these will be the only accredited LS engine builders. The majority of the rules package has been finalized but - in an effort to maximize horsepower with no cost impact and to ensure parts availability - some work has yet to be completed. Since the project's beginning, we have kept in contact with Ohsweken Speedway management and made them aware of the engine's development. In return, Ohsweken track management has stated that they will allow the engine to compete in their 360 Sprint Car events, with Brighton Speedway on board as well. We will keep you informed of any further developments and a finalized rules package in the next few weeks. Please contact Peter Turford at pturford@southernontariosprints.com for more information. Peter Turford President Southern Ontario Sprints About: The Southern Ontario Sprints series sanctioned its first race in 1996, making it one of Canada's longest-running motorsports sanctioning bodies. - WESTBROOK WINS MERRITTVILLE FALL BRAWL WHILE DRYDEN CLINCHES 2025 SOS TITLE
THOROLD, Ont. (October 4, 2025) - The inaugural edition of the Fall Brawl at Merrittville Speedway featured plenty of storylines for the Southern Ontario Sprints series. Dylan Westbrook emerged from a thrilling race with the $5,000 winner's cheque, while Darren Dryden clinched his first SOS championship by just four points. The night began with Matt Farnham setting the Ackland Insurance Quick Time in qualifications by just 0.001 seconds over Westbrook. The championship chase between Dryden and Ryan Turner came into focus in the heat races when Dryden won his heat, while Turner finished second in his. Those results put Dryden in the redraw for A-Main starting positions, lining him up in row two while Turner started in row five. Jordan Poirier and Kyle Phillips made up the front row for the 30 lap A-Main, and Poirier took the early lead while Phillips kept pace with him. Westbrook moved into the top five after starting sixth, and a joust between Westbrook and Todd Hoddick brought about a spin for Hoddick on lap seven. The championship chase heated up when Dryden began to fade through the field with brake issues while Ryan Turner moved forward. Westbrook caught and passed Phillips on lap 16, and the two began to draw closer to Poirier. Heavy traffic confronted the leaders over the last ten laps, and produced a classic joust for the win. Poirier, Westbrook, and Phillips frequently raced three wide through traffic, each taking a turn in the lead until Poirier slid high and spun on lap 26. Westbrook stayed up front to lock down the win after a dash to the finish, while DJ Christie and Josh Hansen charged forward to take podium finishes. Phillips settled for fourth, while Cory Turner rounded out the top five. Ryan Turner's championship bid came up four points short with a sixth place finish, with Scott Kreutter taking seventh from row 10 for The Drivers Project Hard Charger award. Dryden was able to hang on to finish eighth and lock down the title, while Jason Barney and Baily Heard rounded out the top ten. Thanks to Nitro 54, Ackland Insurance, Tammy 10 Media, Merrittville Speedway, and Glenn Styres Racing, the total purse for the night was $19,850, which set a new high water mark for a stand alone Southern Ontario Sprints event. - CHRISTIE CLAIMS BUXTON SOS/GLSS WIN
MERLIN, Ont. (August 23, 2025) - DJ Christie claimed the win on Saturday night at Buxton Speedway in a co-sanctioned event with the Southern Ontario Sprints and Great Lakes Super Sprints series. Ryan Turner and DJ Christie made up the front row, and Christie led all 25 laps on the fast high-banked Chatham-Kent oval. A melee on lap two saw Dylan Westbrook, Skyler Evans, and Jared Horstman taken out of contention, although Horstman was able to stay in the race. Christie drove a flawless race in and out of heavy traffic. While he led all the laps, his advantage was never more than half a second, and was down to 0.066 seconds with two laps to go. Christie was able to lock down the win worth $2,500 USD over Ryan Turner, Liam Martin, Dustin Daggett, and Darren Dryden. Skyler Evans set a new track record in time trials with a lap of 13.114 seconds, giving the 14-year-old the Ackland Insurance Quick Time award. Jacob Dykstra won The Drivers Project Hard Charger award. Darren Dryden leads the SOS standings by just eight points over Ryan Turner with the end of the season in sight. Many other spots within the top ten are also up for grabs. The next SOS events are the Northern Sprint Car Nationals weekend at Ohsweken Speedway on September 12 and September 13, while the season will conclude with the finale of the Gold Crown Series at Merrittville on October 4.
