- Thomas serves notice with Attica 410 win; Vandermark earns 1st late model victory; Rando tops 305 sprints
ATTICA, Ohio - Cale Thomas has served notice to the 410 sprint car teams in the region. He and the Rudzik Excavating team are going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2026. The Fairland, Indiana driver drove to his seventh career feature win at Attica Raceway Park Friday, April 17 on Baumann Auto Group/7L Construction/Venture Visionary Partners Night. Thomas, who started third in the 30 lap Callie's Performance Products 410 Sprint feature, took the lead from Brandon Spithaler on lap six and despite a couple of cautions pulled away for the victory to kick off the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group season. Following Thomas to the checkers was 11th starter Parker Price Miller, Bryce Lucius, Darin Naida and Jordan Ryan. Friday's win comes on the heels of Thomas and the Rudzik team winning the All Star Circuit of Champions owners title in 2025 and puts them on the radar to challenge for driver and team title in 2026. "It was tricky tonight. Usually when you take the lead here you kind of know what's going on. I took the lead and I was like what should I do. The top seemed like it could be good if someone was good. I could go anywhere but I felt like the line I was running the whole race was good. It's so tough to win these races and this race was like an All Star race. Huge competition from AFCS and it was cool to see so many All Star teams here just trying to get better," said Thomas beside his Rudzik Excavating, AL Drivelines, Centerline Boring, Smith Titanium backed #49x. Mike Vandermark Jr. from Cedar Springs, Michigan is liking Ohio racing. Vandermark, who won April 3 at Moler Raceway Park in southern Ohio, added his first career Dirt Nerds Podcast Powered by Propane UMP Late Model win at Attica Raceway Park Friday. Vandermark took the lead from the drop of the green and survived a caution with just one lap to go to get the win over Todd Brennan, Devin Shiels, Colin Shipley and Kyle Moore. " We usually suck here. I can't believe it," said Vandermark beside his Performance Motorsports, Performance Engineering Racing Engines, North American Diesel Parts, Outlaw Racing Supply backed #41. After an initial caution on the start, the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature went non-stop with Lindsey, Ohio's Steve Rando dominating for his seventh career Attica win to kick off the Real Geese Decoys/Real Capz Attica Fremont Championship Series season. Defending Attica 305 sprint champion Seth Schneider, Logan Mongeau, John Ivy and JJ Henes rounded out the top five. "I started out front and tried to maintain. I got through traffic pretty good. The car was damn good," said Rando beside his Bill Tool & Machine, Davis Fabricators, Wolf Pack Tree Service, Attitudes Hair Salon, Triple L. Logistics, Pub 400, Gressman Powersports backed #19R. Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 24 with the AFCS 410 and 305 sprints and UMP late models in action. - Wagaman Beats Dietz and Dietrich For 8K Grove Tommy Classic Win
Mechanicsburg - Troy Wagaman Jr. claimed the 30-lap Tommy Hinnershitz Classic for Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprint cars at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night. It was his first win in the race, worth $8,000. It was also the first oval win of the season for the defending track champion. Both Wagaman and Danny Dietrich shared the front for the start of the main event with Wagaman getting back to the line first when the first lap was scored while Dietrich got shuffled backward. On the opening lap both Brock Zearfoss and Brent Shearer split Dietrich in the second corner, relegating him to fourth before Freddie Rahmer also drove by. Zearfoss was chasing Wagaman when the first caution flag of the race unfurled with five laps away for a spin by Kody Hartlaub. Rahmer went to work on Shearer when action resumed and took third with seven laps down. As Zearfoss raced to stay with Wagaman, Rahmer began gaining on the second place driver. And then just as Rahmer was ready to make a pass for the spot, Zearfoss slowed suddenly and withdrew on lap 14. At the same time the race at the front of the field entered the backmarkers, allowing Rahmer to begin running down the leader. And then a final caution flag with 11 laps to go wiped out a 1.3 second lead built by Wagaman when Lance Dewease stopped on the track while running seventh. Austin Bishop restarted third for the new green with Chase Dietz having slipped up to fourth. When action got back underway it was Dietrich who came to life and as both he and Dietz challenged Rahmer for second with Bishop faltering. Fans rose to their feet as the trio dueled for the spot. Dietz challenged on the bottom and Dietrich worked the top groove on Rahmer at the new green with both drivers advancing to second and third respectively by lap 23. But by the time the pair had rid themselves of Rahmer and could focus on the top spot, Wagaman had driven out to a comfortable margin. And it would be an advantage of .971 seconds that he would hold to the finish over Dietz, Dietrich, Rahmer and Cameron Smith. Sixth through 10th went to Justin Whittall, Bishop, Doug Hammaker, Matt Campbell and Shearer. The victory was the fifth overall of Wagaman's career at Williams Grove Speedway. It was also the second of the season at the track for mounts owned by Mike Heffner as Steven Snyder Jr. wheeled to a win for the stables in early April. Heats went to Bishop, Dietz and Dietrich with Dylan Cisney claiming the B Main. Wagaman set fast time with a lap of 16.786 seconds. Sam Rial won the 15-lap xtreme stock main to close the night. Evan Foust was second followed by Mike Goodwin, Rayn Bloom and Daren Rice. Heats went to Rial and Foust. Feature Finishes 4/17/26 410 sprint cars, 30 laps: 1. Troy Wagaman Jr., 2. Chase Dietz, 3. - Life And Career Of Hinnershitz To Be Honored Friday With Williams Grove Tommy Classic
Mechanicsburg - The sprint car races at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night are meant to pay tribute to the oval's original winner. He was the first. He had one of the most recognizable names in motorsports history dating back to the 1930s. Slated Friday at Williams Grove will be the Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial Spring Classic, honoring the late, great racer from Oley that holds the distinction of winning the first ever race held at the brand new Williams Grove Speedway back on Sunday, May 21, 1939. Hinnershitz won the race in what was called a "hard and heady" event to best the famed Joie Chitwood. Hinnershitz's death in 1999 left behind an auto-racing legacy worthy of note by any standards. During his 30-year career spanning 1930-1960, "The Flying Dutchman," as he was known, amassed seven AAA/USAC Eastern Big Car Championships, taking titles in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955, 1956 and in 1959. He had garnered 103 total AAA/USAC feature wins with 19 taking place at Williams Grove. Hinnershitz set 43 AAA track records during his tenure and would compete in three Indianapolis 500s.At the time of his death, the 87-year old was ranked second behind Steve Kinser on the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame's Top Sprint Car Drivers of All Time list. Back in 1939, when Hinnershitz passed Chitwood for the lead in that maiden race at Williams Grove, the duel was billed as "one of the most thrilling bits of driving ever witnessed on a Pennsylvania speedway." It was said that when Hinnershitz passed Chitwood, "the Big Chief was met with acclaim from the crowd." Hinnershitz's accomplishments and memory will receive more acclaim this Friday night at the Grove when yet again the Tommy Classic is staged. The winner of the 30-lap main event will take home $8,000 as the Tommy champion. Adult general admission for the April 17 racing program is set at $30 with students ages 13-20 admitted for just $10. Kids ages 12 and under are always admitted for FREE at Williams Grove Speedway.
