- It's a Simpson sweep as Ron Jenkins Memorial wraps at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 30, 2025) - Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, polished off a flawless weekend on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway, completing a sweep of the 11th annual Ron Jenkins Memorial. Simpson backed his Friday-night victory with another Comp Cams Super Dirt Series feature win, this time leading the final 30 of 40 laps, outdistancing Clay Stuckey. Simpson earned $12,000 for the win, which included a $2,000 bonus courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt in honor of the late Ron Jenkins, builder and owner of the original Lucas Oil Speedway. Including a pair of $500 fast-time bonus awards plus a $100 series bonus each night for fast time, Simpson took home $20,200 for the two nights. "I just want to thank everybody at Lucas Oil and the Jenkins family for the extra money they put up," Simpson said. "It means a lot. I go to work every day, from 7 until 3:30 and go out and work on my car afterward. "I don't do this for a living. To be able to come down here ... I've had one other week when I brought home $20,000 close to home." Daniel Adam beat Simpson to the lead at the start, the first time in two nights that Simpson had not set the pace. Adam rolled away to nearly a one-second lead before Simpson began to reel him in, drawing within .215 seconds by lap 10 with Terry Phillips another 1.2 seconds behind in third. Simpson took the lead on lap 11, sliding past Adam on the inside coming off turn four. Just five laps later, Simpson had sped away to a two-second command over Adam with Clay Stuckey taking third away from Phillips. "The top was better. I could see that and he had a pretty good cushion," Simpson said of Adam's early lead. "I knew I had to get out there and ride and just follow him. I tried to keep the car a little straighter than he was so I wouldn't burn up the right rear." As action remained caution-free and the track took on rubber, Simpson upped his cushion to 2.4 seconds by the halfway mark on lap 20. Adam was able to cut into the margin a bit, but Simpson continued to sail along with a comfortable margin. The first caution came on lap 33 as fourth-running Phillips slowed in turn four. That took away Simpson's 1.8-second lead over Adam with seven to go, putting some mystery into the late stages of the event. Simpson had a flawless restart and Adam slipped a bit, allowing Stuckey to get into second and R.C. Whitwell went to third. Simpson's lead was .935 seconds with three to go when Adam slow in turn two with a flat tire, bringing out a caution. Stuckey, of Shreveport, La., said he thought he might have a shot at Simpson the restart, but knew it had to happen quickly. "I thought I could catch him. There was a second there I was slowly creeping up on him," Stuckey said. "I maybe had five laps left on my right rear tire. You could tell with about four laps to go that it was done, but with the weekend I've had I'll definitely take second." Completing his big weekend, Simpson finished it off after the restart and beat Stuckey by .793 seconds at the finish. Whitwell was third with Cole Wells of Aurora fourth and Mason Oberkramer fifth after starting 14th. A trio of southwest Missouri drivers joined Wells with top-10 finishes: Dillon McCowan of Urbana (seventh), Ryan Johnson from Aurora (eighth) and Payton Looney of Republic (ninth). Simpson set fast qualifying time for the second straight night, with a lap of 16.091 in Group B. Simpson also went on to win his heat race to clinch the pole position for the feature. Frye picks up Super Stocks win: An old pro celebrated in victory lane for the first time in long time as Late Model legend Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., held off Taylor Carver for the $1,000 Hickamo Super Stocks feature win. Frye, driving a car owned by regular-season Super Stocks track champion Tim Brown, led all but the opening lap. The former MLRA and MARS champion was driving the car to help his long-time friend Brown dial it in for the Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Oct. 10-12. "I think the last race I won was a motorcycle hare scramble," a laughing Frye said in victory lane. He added that the Street Stock drove "to me, just like a Late Model. Man, it felt just like one. It's been 40 years since I really drove a Street Stock and I don't remember it being nothing like this. "This is a lot better car than I had. I want to thank Tim and Staci Brown for the opportunity to do this. I tried to back out of it and he kept begging. I was like, 'OK, I'll come do this' and I'm so glad I did." Frye was seventh on Friday in the feature, his first action since driving one event in a Late Model in 2022. Prior to that, he had last raced in 2019 in the Modified division. Frye took the lead on lap two, but Carver soon was applying pressure with Johnny Fennewald third. It stayed that way until lap 10 when five cars spun in turn three to bring out the race's fourth caution. With everyone staying mostly attached to the bottom groove the last half of the race, Frye held off Carver by .260 seconds or just over one car length for the win. Lap-one leader Johnny Coats was third with Ted Welschmeyer fourth and Matthew Kay fifth. Emma Davis earns Show-Me Vintage Racers win: Ninth-starting Emma Davis of Kansas City took over the lead with three leads to go and held on to earn the Show-Me Vintage Racers feature win, her first in her second season of racing with the SMVR. "The track was great. The car just handled great," Davis said in victory lane. Davis' parents, Beth and John Martin, also were in the SMVR field. John finished seventh in the feature and Beth was 12th. Emma Davis started racing at the age of six in go-karts, then moved to E-Mods and Lightning Sprints. "My parents raced with me tonight and I couldn't do it without them, or without the support of my wonderful husband," Davis said. "I have a great support system." Jason Isabell went from sixth to first on the opening lap and led until lap eight, when seventh-starting Ken Brown took over the top spot. Caution flew on lap nine and, while the track was being cleared, Isabell's car lost power to end his night. That elevated Mark Evinger into second with six to go with Davis third. Davis made the pass for the lead headed into turn three on lap 13 and she held on for the win, beating Evinger by .346 seconds. Damon Clevenger was third with Brown fourth. - Wolff doubles up with Keller, Edde also scoring Lucas Oil Speedway Casey's Thursday Night Thunder wins
WHEATLAND, MO. (July 3, 2025) - What a Thursday night it was for Tyler Wolff at Lucas Oil Speedway. Wolff, gobbling up huge chunks of ground over the final five laps, caught and passed race-long leader Tanner Mullens on the final lap to capture the Heartland Modified Tour-Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified feature win on Casey's Thursday Night Thunder. That wasn't all for the Fayetteville, Ark., driver. Wolff came back a couple of races later and scored a runaway win in the Hermitage Lumber Late Model main event to make the kickoff to his July 4th holiday weekend even better. "I never thought I'd ever win here in a Late Model and I sure never thought I'd win twice in the same night. It's incredible," Wolff said after the Late Model win. Wolff earned $2,000 for the victory in the Heartland Modified Tour headliner in front of a big crowd that stuck around to enjoy post-race fireworks. There were 53 USRA Modifieds in the pits as a total of 152 cars in four divisions were on hand for the holiday special. Other winners on the program, which featured a kids' bicycle giveaway during intermission, were Doug Keller (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars) and Ryan Edde (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods). Wolff appeared to be a longshot for the Modified win as Mullens, who already had won six HMT features this season, had a three-second lead with just a handful of laps remaining. But Wolff didn't give up and emerged from his car an excited winner in victory lane. "There's cars parked all the way out to the highway. It's incredible to see everyone here," Wolff said of the crowd. "It's awesome to win in front of everyone. I can't believe we got the win. Tanner was pretty good and that lapped traffic helped us out." Mullens started from the pole and rolled to a 2.4-second lead after just five laps. Wolff got around Fuqua for second by lap 10, but faced a three-second deficit to the leader. Wolff soon began to whittle the margin during an extended green-flag run, drawing within 1.4 seconds by lap 17 as Fuqua was another three seconds back. Racing in lapped traffic, Mullens' margin was down to one second by lap 21. But then Mullens took advantage of Wolff's troubles clearing slower cars and extended his lead back to nearly three seconds over the next two laps. With action remaining caution-free, Wolff cleared traffic and starting to close ground. He was right behind Mullens by lap 28, then caught and passed the leader on the inside of turn two on the final circuit to pull off the victory. "I knew I wanted to try one last-ditch effort," Wolff said. "I didn't want to show my nose until that last lap and made it work. I'm glad to be here. It's nice to be sitting in the catbird seat every once in a while. I was watching what he was doing and I knew if I could stick it in one and two I'd have a pretty good chance. It worked out." Mullens was disqualified in post-game technical inspection. That elevated Terry Phillips to second place with Fuqua third, Nic Bidinger fourth and Cole Campbell fifth. Wolff dominated Late Model field: There was no need for late-race dramatics for Wolff in the Hermitage Lumber Late Model main event. Wolff led every lap in winning by 14.6 seconds over runner-up Robbe Ewing to finish off his double. "Man, I have to thank Jimmy Mars and the crew," Wolff said. "I have a whole bunch of guys here helping me out and that's what made this possible. It was a long day today. "We bought this car last year and crashed it pretty bad. We got it put back together and finally got a chance to race. We threw one of the A-Mod motors in there to see what we could do." Wolff rolled to a 3.8-second lead over Darron Fuqua just five laps into the Late Model feature and the command grew to just over five seconds by lap seven. The leader caught lapped by lap nine, but it didn't slow him down as the lead remained at five seconds with eight circuits remaining. Without a caution to give anyone else a chance, Wolff's beatdown continued. Wolff prevailed by 18 seconds over Ewing, who went from fourth to second on the final lap. Fuqua was third with Tucker Cox fourth and Johnny Fennewald fifth. Keller wins USRA Stock Cars with late pass: Doug Keller of Easton, Mo., made his first O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars start of the season a winning one, leading the final two circuits to beat Tyler Cadwallader for the feature win. For much of the race, it appeared that Mason Beck would lead all 20 laps. The pole-starting Beck set the pace from the start with Cadwallader advancing from fifth to second by lap two. Beck had a five-second lead five laps in when the race's second caution appeared. Keller applied pressure on Beck after the restart, with several others close behind. Keller repeatedly tried to find a way around Beck and finally squeezed past the leader on the inside of turn one on lap 16. But as those two battled, Cadwallader grabbed the lead on lap 17 only to see Keller regain the point the next time around. Keller was able to hang on the final two laps and beat Cadwallader by .781 seconds. "It's hard racing your friends," Keller said. "Mason was a little bit slower on entry and I kept backing the corner up hoping I could get a run. Once I got door-to-door, I was like 'dude, you at least have to give me a lane.' Then we got all kinds of crazy there for a lap and we were three wide. I was like 'calm down and and get back to your marks. "I love to run the bottom and made it stick there and it felt pretty good." Beck settled for third with William Garner fourth and Justin Custer fifth. Edde all the way in USRA B-Mods: Ryan Edde of Cross Timbers started on the pole and led all 20 laps for the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod victory, his first career win at Lucas Oil Speedway. "I've raced here for a long time and this is the first one," Edde said. "The track was to my liking tonight, nice and slick, and I just tried to be smooth and steady and not make too many mistakes." Ryan Gillmore started fifth and moved into second by lap four and began his pursuit of Edde, but he was 1.5 seconds behind at the midpoint on lap 10. A caution on lap 11 wiped out Edde's margin with nine to go. Edde got away on the restart to a half-second lead that he maintained by lap 15 over Gillmore and Jon Sheets. Edde stretched it out to a full second by lap 18 and took it home from there for his first Lucas Oil Speedway win of the season, beating Gillmore by 1.5 seconds. Sheets was third with Ewing fourth and JC Morton fifth.
