Fairbury Speedway Dirt Track News
- O'Neal Captures High Bank Heist Opener at Eagle Raceway
EAGLE, NE (May 14, 2026) - Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Indiana charged from the seventh starting position to capture his fifth Series victory of the 2026 season Thursday night during opening night of the Malvern Bank High Bank Heist at Eagle Raceway. O'Neal collected $10,000 for the win, which also marked his 13th overall dirt late model victory of the year. Ricky Thornton Jr., who started 15th, earned Hoker Trucking Hard Charger honors as he rallied to finish second. Brandon Sheppard, fresh off last Saturday's victory at Fairbury Speedway, rounded out the Big River Steel podium in third after starting 10th. Max Blair finished fourth, while Jonathan Davenport completed the top five. Brandon Overton led the opening 17 laps of the 40-lap main event before Garrett Alberson briefly took over the top spot for three circuits. Overton regained the lead on lap 21 and appeared poised for victory until O'Neal began closing rapidly in the closing stages. O'Neal completed the winning pass exiting turn four on lap 30. Overton remained second until lap 34, when a flat left rear tire forced him to the hot pit. After changing the tire, Overton returned to finish 16th after leading 27 laps. The win marked the 39th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of O'Neal's career and his second triumph at Eagle Raceway, having also won during the Series' inaugural visit to the track in 2024. "I felt like we were pretty good all night," O'Neal said in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. "The top was dominant early, and it was hard to make time on the bottom. Once the track started moving around, though, I felt really good down there. Overton was definitely better around the cushion, but once the bottom came in, I just tried to stay patient and wait for my opportunity." "We finally got a restart where I could get underneath him, and then he had the misfortune with the flat tire. On that last restart, my carburetor stumbled a little bit and I thought everybody was going to pile into me. I'm sorry if anybody got caught up in that." Thornton, who unloaded a backup car after issues surfaced during hot laps, charged from the eighth row to finish just 0.616 seconds behind O'Neal. "I love this place," Thornton said. "We had trouble with the primary car in hot laps, so we unloaded this one and probably overdrove in qualifying, which made for a long night. But we passed a lot of cars, and the car felt really good." "Restarts really dictated where you needed to be. I knew Max (Blair) wasn't going to the top, and if JD left the top open, I was going for it. I got a really good run and just tried not to get stuck following Hud around the bottom." Sheppard continued his recent momentum with a third-place finish after charging forward from 10th. "Honestly, I felt like we had a really good race car the whole race," Sheppard said. "I just made a couple wrong moves early—stayed too high too long, then stayed too low too long before halfway. Once everyone started moving around, I could really roll the track and move wherever I needed to. We had a really fast race car tonight." O'Neal's winning SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and backed by Big River Steel, Wheeler Metals, Merrill Bonding Company, Professional Concrete Cutting and Drilling, O'Neal's Salvage and Recycling, Lineal Contracting, Seven Spurs Ranch, Sub Surface of Indiana, Beeman Lumber, Indiana USSSA Fast Pitch Softball, Dicky's Doghouse, Lucas Oil Products, Penske Racing Shocks, and Sunoco Race Fuels. Completing the top ten were Brian Shirley, Devin Moran, Kyle Bronson, Garrett Alberson, and Dallon Murty. - Sheppard Banks $30,000 in FALS Spring Shootout at Fairbury
FAIRBURY, IL (May 9, 2026) - Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Illinois charged to victory Saturday night at Fairbury Speedway, winning the FALS Spring Shootout presented by Titan Industries. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series presented by FloRacing event paid $30,000 to the winner. Sheppard took the lead from Brian Shirley on lap 13 and led the remainder of the race, holding off a late charge from Nick Hoffman over the final five laps to secure his 38th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory and his 17th career win at Fairbury Speedway. Shirley, who led the opening 12 laps, rounded out the Big River Steel podium in third. Brandon Overton finished fourth, while Bobby Pierce completed the top five. The victory marked Sheppard's fourth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season and his seventh overall triumph of 2026. With the win, he moves to third in the championship standings heading into next weekend's events at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska. "This feels awesome. It seems like it's been forever since we won here," Sheppard said in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. "We always seem to win prelims at the Prairie Dirt Classic, but these bigger races have avoided me for a while, so it's really special to win one here tonight." "When I was growing up, I dreaded coming to Fairbury because it's so tough to win here. It takes such a different driving style, and the track changes so much throughout the night. The last eight laps, I felt like I was hanging on for dear life. I think the right rear tire may have been going down after I ran over something during that caution, but this car is an absolute dream to drive right now." Hoffman, seeking his second career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory, started seventh and finished just 0.423 seconds behind Sheppard in the Tye Twarog Motorsports entry. Hoffman moved into second with 10 laps remaining after Clay Harris—who advanced from 12th to second by lap 21 - was slowed in lapped traffic. "He's the Fairbury GOAT," Hoffman said of Sheppard. "There were times I felt like I could gain a little on him, and I was hoping we'd get back to lapped traffic after that caution. But he was just better than me up on the cushion and could really pull away down the straightaways. The biggest thing is learning something for when we come back for the Prairie Dirt Classic." Shirley, who started from the pole, was also eligible for the $1,000 Steering Buddy Darkhorse Award, presented to a first-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature winner in a full-points event. "I think it's honestly just track time here," said the defending Prairie Dirt Classic champion, who is following the LOLMDS full time for the first time in his career. "We haven't had enough laps here yet to get the feel and balance exactly where we need it. But this was a really solid finish for our team and sponsors. We need to focus on consistently finishing races before worrying about winning them. I felt like we had a shot tonight, and while maybe we weren't quite as good as Nick or Sheppy, being this competitive is a huge confidence boost for our team." Sheppard's winning Mark Richards Racing, Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and backed by Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ace Metal Works, Performance Grading, Petroff Towing, Franklin Enterprises, Sunoco Race Fuels, Gunter's Honey, Stiles Marine and Maintenance, and Collins Brothers Towing. Completing the top ten were Jason Feger, Josh Rice, Clay Harris, Trey Mills, and Justin Duty. UNION, KY (May 2, 2026) - Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Indiana took the lead on lap three from Jason Jameson and held off Devin Moran to win the 40th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial on Saturday night at Florence Speedway. O'Neal and Moran entered the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event tied atop the championship standings. With the victory, O'Neal now holds a 30-point advantage over Moran heading into next weekend's events at Farmer City Raceway and Fairbury Speedway. The win marked O'Neal's fourth LOLMDS victory of the season and his 12th overall triumph of 2026, earning him $25,000. Moran finished second, 1.060 seconds behind at the finish, while Ricky Thornton Jr., fresh off his win at Circle City on Friday, rounded out the Big River Steel podium in third. Brandon Sheppard and Garrett Alberson completed the top five. In his 38th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory, the 2023 Series Champion is now tied for seventh on the all-time wins list with Tim McCreadie and Brandon Sheppard. O'Neal survived a tense finish, brushing the turn four wall multiple times in the closing laps, to secure his first Ralph Latham Memorial victory since 2018. The event had not been contested since 2023 due to weather interruptions in recent years. "I've got to tip my hat to Riley (Sheedy), my body guy," O'Neal said. "With a couple laps to go, I was just trying to get everything I could. I got a little loose and backed it into the fence - I knew it wasn't too bad, but I hate that for him, especially with a short turnaround. We'll get it fixed." "I felt like the track was widening out in turns three and four, and I was just waiting for someone to show me their nose." Moran, still seeking his first win in the event that began in 1987, finished second. "I was really good until that one restart," Moran said. "I thought the top would be better, but Thornton got the bottom. Then on another restart, I got a good run and slid him, but I ended up messing both of us up. I apologized - I should have committed to the fence and given him a chance to cross over. I didn't want to race him like that." Thornton, who won the event the last time it was held in 2023, finished third and commented on the late-race contact. "It was just racing - I told him we're not going golfing together anymore," Thornton joked. "Nothing to be mad about. The track was pretty good. When we come back in August, I think they'll widen turns one and two a bit so the top can keep up. Three and four were really good all night. Honestly, these conditions are where I struggle, so to be close to those guys up front, I'm happy." O'Neal's winning SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and backed by Big River Steel, Wheeler Metals, Merrill Bonding, Professional Concrete Cutting and Drilling, O'Neal's Salvage and Recycling, Lineal Contracting, Beeman Lumber, Sunoco Race Fuels, Dicky's Doghouse, Seven Spurs Ranch, Penske Racing Shocks, Lucas Oil, and Indiana USSSA Fast Pitch Softball. Completing the top ten were Max Blair, Jason Jameson, Brian Shirley, Kyle Bronson, and Dan Ebert.
