- ROOKIE BRENT SEXTON HAS SEASON-BEST USAC/CRA FINISH AT PERRIS - RACING VENTURA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, July 18, 2024) Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car rookie driver Brent Sexton scored his best series finish of the season when he placed ninth in the 30-lap main event last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. This Saturday, Sexton and his 20-year-old son Grant will head to the Ventura Raceway for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, "Surecam Showdown." Flying solo last week as Grant was home ill, Sexton, 52, began the night with a 17.482 lap in qualifying. That was the 14th fastest of the cars on hand. He followed that up with an eighth-place finish in his 10-lap heat. Needless to say, the night was not going the way he had planned. Sexton was slated to start the 30-lap main event in the 13th starting position. Then things began to improve. Before a lap was officially recorded, he moved up a couple of spots due to the extracurricular activities of some of the others in the field before a lap was completed. When things finally got sorted out, Sexton, driving the flashy white and fluorescent orange #22 Triple X Chassis powered by a former Rico Abreu Shaver 360, was very racy and was battling in the top 10. Sexton got hooked up in a great side-by-side duel with Yucca Valley, California veteran Jeff Dyer. The two have raced against each other for years in the lightning sprints and they kept the crowd entertained by racing side by side for nearly ten thrilling laps. In the end, Lakeside, California-based Sexton avoided the chaos and brought the #22 car home ninth. It was his first USAC/CRA top 10 of 2024 and his second-best lifetime series finish. The only better one came on June 10, 2023, when he made his debut in the series at Perris and shocked everyone by coming home sixth. "I think I was up to starting sixth when the race got going," Sexton laughed about last Saturday's main. "There was a lot of attrition, and that helped. Also, staying out of the wrecks helped a lot. I am happy with it. I will take it and get ready for this week's race." "The biggest kick for me was the battle I had with Jeff Dyer," Sexton said. "We raced side by side for a lot of laps. We have raced against each other for years in lightning sprint cars, so it was a lot of fun racing hard with him on Saturday." Unfortunately, Dyer was involved in a serious crash when another car flipped and landed on top of him near the end of the race. The blow knocked Dyer out, and his foot pushed the pedal down. He hit the wall with a Titanic force and then flipped. While he quickly regained consciousness, it took EMTs quite some time to get him out of the car as they were immobilizing an arm he broke in the crash. Sitting in his car, Sexton was worried about his friend. "I was sitting in the car and heard over the radio it was Jeff," Sexton recalled. "It was taking some time to get him out, so it was kind of scary and worrisome wondering what was wrong and why it was taking so long. It was a relief when they said it was an arm injury and they were just being careful getting him out." Sexton is a three-time Lightning Sprint Car Series champion, and he still dabbles with the smaller cars when he does not have a full-size sprint car series race. In fact, he won a SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series race on San Diego County's Barona Speedway on May 25th. However, he has the time of his life in the full-size cars and wishes he had made the jump up a long time ago. "I am having so much fun," Sexton said when asked about driving the larger, more powerful cars. "I wish I would have bitten the bullet and done it before so I could have raced against some of the legends. Guys like David Cardey, Rickie Gaunt, and others." The wily veteran, who is third in the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year standings, is 13th in the season-long championship points chase after 10 of 23 races. Sexton Will make the transition from the big half-mile at Perris to the 1/5-mile Ventura oval this Saturday. It will be his third race in the USCS. His best finish so far was a 10th at Ventura on June 1st. His other outing in the club came in May at the Bakersfield Speedway. Unfortunately, he left that one early after slapping the turn 4 wall and finishing 20th. He goes into Saturday's dirt track war 22nd in USCS points. Saturday will be Grant's first race since a July 6th affair at the Santa Maria Speedway. That night, he was knocked out of the main event on lap two and finished 20th. He was slated to compete at Perris last week but scratched due to feeling under the weather. In his first three appearances with the USCS, the 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year has a third, a fifth, and a 16th-place finish. He will be in a tie for 15th when he arrives at the beachside oval on Saturday. Spectator gates for Saturday's USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. Adult tickets are $22.00. Seniors 60 and over, military with ID, and students with an ID get in for $18.00. Children 12 and under are free when they are accompanied by an adult. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/, and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GOES FROM THE BACK TO SEVENTH IN PERRIS USAC/CRA RACE - VENTURA THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, July 17, 2024) After an early program set back in hot laps, Eddie Tafoya Jr. had an impressive recovery by going from 15th to seventh to capture the "In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award" at last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. This week, the veteran racer will head to the Ventura Raceway for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series event presented by Inland Rigging. Tafoya, who turned 27 a few days before the race, was coming into the night after an eighth-place finish on the same half-mile clay oval three weeks earlier. Bolstering his effort in the pits on the evening was Zac Bozanich. While Tafoya had worked with Bozanich on the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, it was the first time the award-winning crew chief was helping Tafoya with his family-owned #51T. Unfortunately, things did not get off to a good start in hot laps. Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, had a big vibration in the car. Turns out the rear end of his car was letting go. He quickly returned to the pits where the crew swarmed over the machine to get it back on the track. "The first lap of hot laps, I had a real bad vibration coming out of two," Tafoya lamented. "I pulled her back into the pits and figured out the whole rear plate was cracked, the gears were stripped, and it started throwing the lower shaft out of it. At that point, it was kind of a scramble time to try and get the spare one off the wall. Luckily we got that done before the heat races. It put us behind the eight-ball, but we made the best of it." "I trust all the equipment we have," Tafoya continued when asked if that affected his focus for the remainder of the night. "All of our spares are real good. We didn't know that rear end was a thicker wall tubing. So, our bleeders did not work. I was out of luck on the bleeders for the rest of the night. That kind of sucked." While the team did get it changed for the heat races, they could not do it in time for qualifying. Thus, Tafoya had to start at the back of the eight-car field in the second heat race. He moved forward to finish sixth. Then, the personable driver had to start last in the 16-car, 30-lap main event. That is when things turned around. In a main that had more than its share of chaos, Tafoya, who is seldom involved in any of the mayhem, used his track savvy to avoid getting tangled up in any of the wrecks. "When you are starting back there, you kind of pick your battles," Tafoya stated. "You know when to go and when not to go. Luckily, I could see those pileups coming from a mile away. I did my best to stay out of them, and luckily it worked out." "I felt really good," Tafoya said when asked if he thought he had a car that could have been a contender if he started closer to the front. "When Tommy (eventual winner Tommy Malcolm) went by me, I did not really want to mess with him too much. I felt I was not too far off his pace, and the same with AJ (second-place finisher AJ Bender). I feel if we could have been up there closer to the front on the start we could have fought for a podium position. When the checkers ended the race, Tafoya crawled out of the car in seventh place. It was his sixth top 10 finish in nine USAC/CRA starts in 2024. The result also kept him seventh in the series championship standings heading into a busy month of August that will see races on the 10th at Santa Maria, the 17th at Perris and the 31st at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya enjoyed having Bozanich work on the car in the pit area. In his years working with Brody Roa, Bozanich captured the coveted USAC/CRA Crew Chief of the Year Award one season and was the champion crew chief in 2023. Needless to say, Tafoya would not mind working with him again in the future. "We are definitely on the same page when it comes to setup stuff," Tafoya said. "It is easy to work with someone when you are both thinking the same about the car and are not butting heads. It is definitely easier when you are making decisions. It was the first time he helped on the #51T. I try to get as much help as I can whenever I can. So, hopefully, it works out a few more times this year and he can be with us." This Saturday, Tafoya will make the 100-mile track to the Ventura Raceway, which is located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, to drive his own #51T car. At the first USCS race at the track on June 1st, he led the field into turn one after the green flag. However, his steering broke, and he slammed into the turn-one wall and tipped over. That left him with a 23rd-place finish. While the June 1st race result at Ventura was not to his liking, Tafoya has done well at the track in the past in USAC/CRA competition. His best showing at Ventura came in May 2022, when he set the fastest qualifying time and finished fifth in the main event. "I feel good," the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year responded when asked about this week's race at the beach. "The time before we ran good, and at Turkey Night (last November) we were winning heat races and qualifiers. So, I definitely feel good going back there on Saturday." Tafoya's best finish in the first four races with the USCS was a second at Santa Maria on June 15th. He enters Saturday's fray fifth in series points. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - JEFF DYER IS AWAITING SURGERY AFTER A CRASH IN SATURDAY'S USAC/CRA MAIN EVENT AT PERRIS
(Yucca Valley, CA, July 14, 2024) Veteran Southern California sprint car driver Jeff Dyer is currently in the hospital waiting for surgery after a crash in Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. The popular driver suffered a broken right humorous bone in the grinding pile-up that occurred on lap 25 of the main event. In addition to the broken bone, he also suffered a concussion and will be confined to the hospital for a week. The incident happened when another driver's steering box malfunctioned, and his car pounded the turn one crash wall. When he came off the wall, the driver began to flip down the track. Dyer, with nowhere to go, got clobbered by the flipping car, and they hit cage to cage. "I just saw him jumping the cushion in turn one," Dyer said from his bed at the Riverside University Hospital. "I tried to turn down, but he started to flip. I do not remember anything after that. When I hit him, we hit cage to cage. Our cage got pushed in pretty good. We think that is when I broke my arm as my seat got hit really hard. When that happened, it knocked me out and it knocked the wind out of me. We think my foot stayed on the throttle." What happened next was something Dyer is probably glad he cannot remember. His 900-horsepower car blasted head-on into the turn-two crash wall and then into one of the track's sponsor billboards before tumbling back down to earth. Safety crews were on the scene in a flash, and he quickly regained consciousness. He remembers the safety crew telling him to "shut the fuel off." At that point, he did not realize he was hurt until he tried to get out of the car, and his "arm was not working." He then remained in the car for quite some time as the EMTs wanted to ensure his arm was stabilized before they removed him for the trip to the hospital. "I did not even know that happened until someone told me," he said when reminded he clobbered the crashwall and the billboard. "I just thought I hit Logan and came to a stop. I did not know all of that other $#@? happened until afterward." Dyer, a Yucca Valley, California resident, is resting kind of uncomfortably as he waits for Monday's surgery. "I am pretty sore," he said. "Of course my arm hurts really bad. It was a clean break all the way through. So they are going to put some rods and pins in it and put me back together like Humpty Dumpty." Another injury in the crash is the car. Dyer's teenage racing son Seth reported that he thinks the car is junk. However, the engine is fine, as it did not get over-revved in the crash. There has been a big outpouring of best wishes and prayers for Dyer on the Internet, and he appreciates that. "That is really cool, man," he said from the hospital. "I appreciate that and thank them very much. I heard a lot of people came down to the pit afterward and helped everyone load everything up. So, that was pretty cool, too. Thanks to those people as well." While his arm is broken and needs fixing, one thing that has remained intact is Dyer's tremendous sense of humor. "I am glad I could make the 9.8 scale," he laughed when told that's what judges would have scored the crash. "That is nice. As long as I entertained, that is what we are there to do." In 2024, the following marketing partners will help keep the Dyers on track. Dependable Machine Inc., Haircuts By Susie, Jobu Racing, LBA Investigations, Straight Time Stirrups, Justice Brothers, Fonseca Racing, Specialty Fasteners, and Blud Racing Lubricants. If you would like to be a part of Dyer Motorsports in 2024, call (760) 550-7237 or send an email to mailto:dyermotorsports4@gmail.com. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING READY FOR PERRIS AFTER ROUGH NIGHT AT SANTA MARIA
(Lakeside, CA, July 11, 2024) After getting hit by what seemed like everything but the track ambulance at Santa Maria, Sexton Gatlin Racing drivers Brent Sexton and his son Grant have dusted themselves off, repaired their damaged cars, and are ready for Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. Gates at the famous Riverside County half-mile oval will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first exciting race will take the green flag at 7:00. The Sexton Gatlin Racing rig made the nearly 300-mile trip north to Santa Maria with three cars inside. One each for Brent and Grant to race in the USAC/CRA Series and a lightning sprint for Lakeside, California flat track motorcycle racer Braydin Collie to use in the companion California Lightning Sprint Car Series race. Brent and Grant were matched up against 24 other top-of-the-line USAC/CRA cars. 2023 Rookie of the Year Grant recorded the best lap of the duo when he shot around the banked 1/3 mile oval in 14.140. That was good enough for the 14th best time of the night. Brent, a 52-year-old who is running for Rookie of the Year this season, stopped the clocks at 14.907 in his ex-Rico Abreu 360. That placed him 19th fastest of the 26. The top five finishers in each 10-lap heat went straight to the 30-lap main event. Drivers finishing sixth on back would have to run the B main. Brent steered the #44 to a seventh-place finish in his heat, meaning he would have extra work in front of him to try and get to the main. Grant, who will turn 20 on Tuesday, fared better when he finished fifth and booked his ticket for the 30-lapper. Brent, who was born in Tennessee, had his work cut out for him in the B main. The three-time lightning sprint car champion was lined up against nine other drivers. The first seven finishers would make it into the A main. In baseball vernacular, the drivers finishing eighth through 10th would hit the showers. The veteran performed well and finished third. That allowed him to join Grant in the A main. Unfortunately, things unraveled in a hurry in the A for both drivers. Grant started 14th, and Brent began in 18th. The chaos started at the beginning of the A main when a car got sideways at the start, leaving Brent nowhere to go. The veteran tipped over. The result was the left rear rim was bent into the bleeder valve. Initially, the crew could not get the wheel nut off until they used a jack to split the wheel apart. Amazingly, they finally got the job done and changed the left rear shock as well, and he was ready for the restart. Coming off his series-best sixth-place finish at Perris a couple of weeks earlier, Grant got caught up in someone else's mess on lap two and flipped. The car suffered costly damage, including a broken Jacob's ladder, exhaust, shocks, and right rear wheel. His #22 was too damaged to continue, and he ended his race with a very frustrating 20th-place finish. With Grant out, SGR fans focused on Brent, who raced for the duration of the 30-lap event and finished 15th. Coming into Saturday's sixth series race of 2024 at Perris, Grant is tied for 14th in the championship standings. One spot and six points behind his youngest offspring is Brent. Collie made his lightning sprint car debut in the fast Sexton Gatlin Racing #44, normally steered by Brent. To say it was an impressive debut is a vast understatement. Being his first time in a lightning sprint, it was no surprise that the flat tracker qualified last in the 14-car field. After all, he had never raced a lightning sprint prior. He also placed last in his heat. However, in the main event, he nearly captured the "Hard Charger" award, going from the 13th starting spot to finish sixth. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1366778 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY WITH THE USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS AT PERRIS
(Chino, CA, July 11, 2024) After a two-week break in his busy racing schedule, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will be back in the gorgeous, family-owned #51T for this weekend's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. The track's 2018 Young Gun Sprint Car Series champion will enter the battleground eighth in USAC/CRA points. The Chino Hills, California resident, who turned 27 on Wednesday, comes into Saturday's Perris race after a busy month of June that saw him compete seven times. Four of the races were in his native California, and three were in Indiana, a hotbed of open-wheel racing. One other race that he was in the "Hoosier State" for was rained out. The likable driver's best June result came in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging main event at the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th when he placed second. That event was sandwiched in between USAC/CRA races at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on June 8th and Perris on the 22nd. He placed fourth at Kern and came from the back to finish eighth at Perris. Earlier in the month of June, Tafoya finished 23rd when something broke in his steering while leading the field into turn one at the USCS race at Ventura on the 1st. He then jetted to Indiana and finished eighth in the A main at the Lawrenceburg Speedway on the fifth and 12th at the Lincoln Park Speedway 24 hours later. He wrapped up his Indiana journey with a sixth-place finish in the B main at Bloomington on the seventh before flying back to California for the Kern race 24 hours later. Unlike June, when Tafoya originally had eight race dates on his schedule, there are only two scheduled thus far in July. The first is this Saturday's USAC/CRA affair at Perris. He will follow that up when the USCS returns to Ventura on the 20th. If you are coming to Saturday's race, be sure to stop by Eddie's pit and wish him a belated Happy Birthday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. at Perris on Saturday, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. - JEFF DYER GETS HIS FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR AT THE SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY
(Yucca Valley, CA, June 27, 2024) Jeff Dyer finally shook the giant gorilla off his back and won his first main event of the season by dominating last Saturday night's California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event at the Santa Maria Speedway. Dyer's 17-year-old son Seth ended up 12th in the same main event after being knocked out by a broken injector wire. In the companion Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Doug Fort Memorial 30-lap main event, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff got beaten around like a pinata but still came home 14th. Sporting new Power Performance Protection Engines, things started out well enough for the Dyer Motorsports duo in qualifying with the CLS. Jeff was the second quickest of the fourteen cars on hand at 14.314. Seth's best time was 14.782. That ended up being the sixth fastest of the night. On Saturday, Seth was the first member of the Yucca Valley, California-based team to contest a race at the 60-year-old track. The teen started on the front and finished third in the first heat. Moments later, the patriarch of the family, Jeff, took to the track. He started on the outside of the front row and advanced forward to finish second. Jeff, who has a Santa Maria winner's trophy from 2019 sitting on his mantle, started on the outside of the front row and stormed into the lead at the start of the main event. Even at that early point in the race, it was evident that he was far faster than all the other cars as he quickly pulled away from the competition. Seth, who came into the night 4th in the championship point standings, was coming from the inside of the second row in the 25-lapper. The talented teen ran in the top five the whole time he was on the track. However, that time ended 17 laps before the checkered flag ended the race. That is when the injector wire broke and saddled in with a frustrating 12th-place finish. Out front, Jeff's only worries came in the form of two yellow flags during the race. However, those worries turned out to be minor because the two times the green flag came back out, he simply motored away from the pack. At the end of the 25th and final lap, he had a full straightaway advantage over his closest pursuer. "We have had our struggles this year," the happy CHP officer told the large enthusiastic crowd after his win. "We have been super-fast. It is the first year we have had where we keep blowing engines. We haven't changed anything. It held together tonight. The track was technical and heavy. I have always had a little trouble freeing my cars up to run the top. They do not really run too good in the heavy stuff. It was kind of slick down below and that is what it stayed at. When you are leading, you never move from what you are doing until they try to pass you. I knew that if I was fast enough they were going to have to wind them up." Dyer's performance in the Cal Sun Racing/Dyer Motorsports #39 in the USAC/CRA portion of the program, got off to a good start when he qualified 10th fastest in the 26-car field. A fourth-place finish in his 10-lap heat race gave him one of the five direct transfers to the main event. The veteran started the main in the 10th spot. With the car working as well, a top-10 finish was certainly in the offing for the night. Unfortunately, he got clobbered. The incident cracked the housing on his rear end, bent a shock, flattened the left rear tire, and bent the steering wheel (another car's tire entered the cockpit and tagged the steering wheel). Despite the damage, his crew got the car back on the track for the restart, and he finished the race in 14th place. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. - FLOWDYNAMICS SPRINT CAR TEAM RACING ON ITS HOME TURF, PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY, THIS SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, July 10, 2024) The Flowdynamics Racing Team, consisting of Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams, gets back in action this Saturday, July 13th, when the West Coast's premiere traditional sprint car series, the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, returns to famous Perris Auto Speedway. It will be race #10 of 23 on the 20-year-old association's schedule. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, was in action last Saturday night when the series made its first stop at Santa Maria Speedway since August 6, 2022. The race was the third on the 60-year-old 1/3 mile banked clay oval since the middle of last month. A tough field of 26 cars and a large, enthusiastic crowd showed up for a night of exciting 410 sprint car racing. Williams kicked off his night by recording the 11th fastest time in the talent-laden field with a lap of 14.061. That put him on the inside of the second row in his 10-lap heat race, where he was matched up against eight other drivers, including his two older siblings. The 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year flew into the lead on the back straight on lap three and went on to score his initial heat victory of the year by more than a full straightaway. At the first USAC/CRA main event at Santa Maria in 703 days, Williams was coming from the 11th spot in his handsome #5W Flowdynamics sprint car. It was a technical "Cowboy Up" track that was capable of biting at any time. Williams kept his nose clean, stayed out of trouble, and came home in the eighth position. The result saw Williams record his eighth top-ten finish in nine starts in 2024. In what has been his breakout season, he remains in fourth place in the championship standings, only eight points in arrears to his older brother Austin, who sits third. Additionally, entering Saturday's race, he is only 45 markers out of first. For McCarthy, who thus far has confined his racing to Perris this year, Saturday will be his sixth start of the season. He has been fast every night and has won heat races on three of the five appearances. However, he has been the victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time later in the shows. His best finish of 2024 came on April 27th when he started 14th and drove forward to finish sixth in the main event. While he is not concerned with points this season, he goes into Saturday's race 18th in the standings. Williams is not the only one in the Flowdynamics team in contention for a championship. Car owners John and Tammy McCarthy are currently third in owner points. Like Williams, they are only 45 points out of first place. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign your autographs, and each of them will have their fine-looking team shirts available. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING TAKING THREE CARS TO SANTA MARIA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, July 4, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing will return to action this Saturday night with a three-car effort at the Santa Maria Speedway. Headlining the team will be Grant Sexton and his father, Brent, who will be competing in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Flat-track motorcycle racer Braydin Collie will join them, driving the SGR #44 in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series portion of the exciting program. Grant comes into the night off his season-best USAC/CRA sixth-place finish on May 27th. He also won the Hard Charger on the same night, going from 16th on the start to finishing sixth. In the same race, Brent, 52, picked up five spots in the main, going from 18th to 13th. Going into Saturday's show at Santa Maria, Grant is 16th in points, and Brent is one spot and 14 points behind his youngest offspring. Sexton Gatlin Racing has appeared at Santa Maria numerous times over the past couple of decades. The last time was on August 6, 2022. On that night, Brent captured the California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event. SGR bookended that main event when Brent's oldest son, Dalton, subbed for Grant in the race. The older sibling pulled off the track after one lap and finished 15th. On the same night, Grant, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on July 16th, was making his second-ever start in the USAC/CRA Series. Flashing some of the talent that would take him to the 2023 Rookie of the Year, he impressively qualified 15th in the 31-car field. In his 10-lap heat race, he missed the transfer to the A main by two positions. That sent him to the B main where he was the show. On the opening circuit of the 12-lapper, he touched wheels with another car and bicycled towards the wall in turn three. He did not let up and gathered it back in. A few laps later, he was trying to pass the fifth-place car on the outside on the back chute. The car suddenly bolted right, clipped Grant, and sent him into the fence. Yet, the teen maintained his poise and did not lose a spot. However, running in the final transfer spot going into turn one on the last lap, he hit a big rut and spun out, ending a crowd-pleasing performance and his night of racing. Joining Sexton Gatlin Motorsports at Santa Maria will be Lakeside, California's Braydin Collie. The flat-track motorcycle racer will make his California Lightning Sprint Car Series debut on the 1/3-mile banked clay oval. For fans who want to see SGR in action on Saturday, the gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will start at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. STARTS THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS OF RACING SATURDAY NIGHT AT SANTA MARIA
(Chino, CA, July 4, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. begins three straight Saturday nights of racing when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its first of three 2024 appearances at the newly rejuvenated Santa Maria Speedway this Saturday, July 6th. One week later, on July 13th, he will contest the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway and will close the month when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, visits the Ventura Raceway on July 20th. Tafoya, who will turn 27 next Wednesday, will be making his 21st start of the season on Saturday. As of late, the friendly racer has been steadily climbing higher on the USAC/CRA Series championship point ladder. The Chino Hills, California resident enters Saturday's fray on the 1/3 mile banked clay oval eighth in the standings. He is a mere 10 points out of seventh and less than 90 points behind the third-place driver. Advancing so high in the standings comes after a wild start to the season when he seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the first three USAC/CRA races of the year, Tafoya finished 21st, 16th and 12th. The main event finishing average of those three races was 16.33. In the last five races, he has a fourth, a sixth, two eight-place results, and a ninth. His average finish in the last five is 7.00. His overall average for all eight USAC/CRA races this year is 10.37. The average for the last five races and for all eight races on the schedule would more than likely have been lower had the last series race on June 22nd not been stopped 10 laps early. Series officials red-flagged the event due to dusty conditions. In that race, Tafoya had to restart at the back after a tangle on lap 16. In just four laps, he raced all the way up to eighth. Had the race run its 30-lap duration; in all likelihood, he would have passed more cars. In going to Santa Maria on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the site of his best finish of the year. On June 15th, he placed second in the USCS main event at the 60-year-old facility. In addition to it being his best finish of the year, it was also his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. The result came at the first race at the track since 2022. The surface that night was a tire eater. However, this will be the track's second race since then, and teams are looking for improved track conditions on Saturday. The gates for Saturday's race at Santa Maria will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00, and the first race will start at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. - FOURTH IN POINTS, LOGAN WILLIAMS GOES TO THE SANTA MARIA RACEWAY ON SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, July 3, 2024) Enjoying the best season of his career, Logan Williams will be behind the wheel of the Flowdynamics #5W when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its first appearance at the Santa Maria Speedway since 2022 this Saturday, July 6th. Spectator gates at the newly reopened 1/3 mile banked clay oval will open at 4:00 p.m., qualifying will start at 5:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 6:00. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, has performed well in his last two outings at Santa Maria. On July 3, 2021, he placed eighth in the main. At the last USAC/CRA race at the track on August 6, 2022, he finished the 30-lapper in fourth place. The 2013 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, Williams has been one of the most consistent drivers in the USAC/CRA Series this season. He has seven top-10s and four top-five finishes in the first eight races. The only night he placed out of the top 10 came at Perris when driveline issues sent him off the track early in the going on April 27th. He ended up 22nd on that night. Entering this Saturday's race, he is fourth in the series championship point standings, and he is only five points out of third. At the series last race at Perris on June 22nd, Williams and teammate Matt McCarthy, who lives in Riverside, California, had flashes of brilliance on what turned out to be a strange race. On a hot, windy night, Williams turned in the seventh fastest time of the 22 cars on hand during qualifying when he toured the half-mile oval with a lap of 17.651. McCarthy's 17.950 was the 13th fastest on the night. The times in qualifying ensured the teammates that they would be starting in the same heat race. In fact, they were starting nose to tail in the first heat. McCarthy was on the outside of row one and Williams was directly behind him. They finished next to each other for the second Perris heat in a row. At the Salute to Indy in May, McCarthy was second, and Williams was third when they were matched up in the same heat. This time, it was McCarthy for the win with Williams second. It was his third heat race win in five starts in 2024 for McCarthy, who makes his home in Riverside, California. The main turned into one of the most bizarre races in the 28-season history of Perris Auto Speedway. Afternoon temperatures surpassed the century mark. To throw another wrench into the situation, Mother Nature was supplying wind. Normally when there is wind at Perris, it lays down late in the afternoon. On this occasion, the wind did not stop, and the temperature was 80 degrees when the main bumped off. Williams started the 30-lap main in seventh, with McCarthy coming from 13th. Due to the heat and wind, the track quickly became very dusty, hindering the driver's visibility. McCarthy was involved in a skirmish with three other cars on lap 16, ending his night with an 18th-place finish. Williams' night ended on lap 20 when series officials threw the red flag and ended the race due to the dusty conditions. By that time, Williams had advanced his position to fourth. That gave him three straight top fours, including a second at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on June 8th. Adult tickets are $25.00 for Saturday's race at Santa Maria. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign your autographs, and each of them will have their fine-looking team shirts available. If you or your company would like to be a part of one of the West Coast's most prominent sprint car teams in the 2024 season, please contact John McCarthy at 909 930-5522 or mailto:john@flodyinc.com. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. COMES FROM THE BACK TO FINISH EIGHTH IN SHORTENED PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY MAIN
(Chino, CA, June 27, 2024) In what can best be described as a bizarre night, Eddie Tafoya Jr. came from the back of the pack to finish eighth in last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. The race was called complete at the end of 20 laps leaving fans to wonder where he would have finished if it had gone the full 30-circuits. Tafoya, who was racing at the track closest to his Chino Hills, California home, was the 10th fastest car of the 22 on hand in qualifying. The quickest of his two laps on the clocks was a 17.848. The time sent the affable racer to the first heat race on the hot evening. Starting on the inside of row two in the 10-lapper, he placed fifth. During the afternoon, the thermometer was registering at over 100 degrees at the 28 year old track. In addition, the wind was blowing. By the time the eighth series 30-lap main event of 2024 was ready to push off, the wind was still blowing, and the temperature was 80 degrees. When the 22-car field of 900+ horsepower cars began the race, a problem that rarely exists at the track reared its ugly head. That problem was copious amounts of dust. Early on, veteran racer Tafoya, who started the main event in 10th, got caught up in somebody else's mess. After a quick trip to the work area, he returned to the battleground but had to restart the race at the back. While the dust had settled during the yellow flag period, it came up again as soon as the race resumed. Despite issues seeing, Tafoya managed to steer the car, which is a fan favorite with its red foil trim, forward. He was one of the few cars making passes, and he found himself impressively back up to eighth spot. However, that was as far as he was going to get. As conditions were not improving, series officials called the race complete at 20-laps. While it would have been interesting to see where 26-year-old Tafoya would have finished had the race not been shortened, it was an impressive performance in less-than-ideal conditions. It also gave him six top 10 finishes in the last 10 Southern California A mains he has started. Included in the top 10s is a second place at the grand reopening of the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th. Saturday's finish saw Tafoya close to within 10-points of the driver currently ranked seventh in the championship standings. With more than half the season remaining, the 2019 series Rookie of the Year will surely rise higher in the point battle before the season ends. Tafoya gets this weekend off, but he will be back at it on July 5th when the USAC/CRA Series heads to Santa Maria for the first time since 2022. - FRESH OFF VACATION, GRANT SEXTON GETS SEASON-BEST USAC/CRA SIXTH-PLACE FINISH AT PERRIS
(Lakeside, CA, June 28, 2024) Fresh off a nice vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Grant Sexton recorded his best Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series finish of the season when he placed sixth last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. The performance also earned the teen the Jeff and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award. In addition, his father Brent, who had been on vacation at the river, tied his season-best series finish when he placed 13th in the same race. Grant, who will turn 20 on July 16th, qualified 16th on the hot night with a time of 18.360. Brent, a three-time lightning sprint car champion who is contesting his rookie season in USAC/CRA, timed in 19th best at 18.698. The father-son team competed in the same 10-lap heat race. Grant finished 6th, with his father one spot back in seventh. At the track that is located 75 miles east of Los Angeles and 75 miles north of San Diego, the temperature was over 100 degrees in the afternoon, and the wind was blowing. By the time the main event rolled around, the wind was still blowing, and the temperature was 80 degrees. Before the race started, the PAS crew worked the corners of the famous track. However, Mother Nature's wrath prevailed, and the track became dusty early on. Despite those conditions, Grant steered his brilliant white and hot pink Triple X Chassis #22 forward in the race. He was still moving forward on lap 20 when series officials red-flagged the event and deemed the race over. It ended with Grant in sixth. It was definitely the right call, but one has to wonder if he could have continued passing cars if the race had seen out its duration. For Grant, last year's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, it was a relief to get his first top-10 series finish of the season. He moved up to 16th in the championship standings heading into the July 5 race at Santa Maria. Brent, who is contesting his first full season in the series, is one position behind in 17th. Joining Sexton Gatlin Motorsports at Santa Maria will be Lakeside, California's Braydin Collie. The flat rrack motorcycle racer will make his California Lightning Sprint Car Series debut on the 1/3-mile banked clay oval. - DYER MOTORSPORTS BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY AND PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY RESULTS
(Yucca Valley, CA, June 27, 2024) After a tough weekend in the California Lightning Spring Car Series race at the Bakersfield Speedway, Jeff Dyer headed to Perris Auto Speedway for last Saturday night's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race. However, his night ended under a strange circumstance. Dyer and his son Seth will have this weekend off before returning to action on July 6th at the newly reopened Santa Maria Speedway. The prior week at Bakersfield, Jeff was in a strange ride. After he detonated an engine in the #4 car at Ventura, six-time series champion Bobby Michnowicz loaned him his backup car for the race at the "Okie Bowl." Seth, 17, was in his familiar #4JR. The teen, who presently owns family bragging rights in CLS, came into the event fourth in points. He was the seventh-fastest qualifier on the night with a lap of 15.937. Jeff, who was having some issues with his loner ride, timed in at 15.971. For the second weekend in a row, Seth won his heat race. Jeff was matched against his youngest offspring in the same race, and placed third, directly behind his car owner, Michnowicz. When the field rolled onto the racetrack for the main event at Bakersfield, Seth was on the pole for the second straight time. Due to his time in qualifying, Jeff started ninth. Seth sailed into the lead at the onset and set a blistering pace. Meanwhile, behind him, Jeff began putting on a show. Slicing and dicing his way from the back, he was in the top five on lap two. However, his night would come to a screeching halt on the third circuit when his engine, which was running too lean, slowed drastically, and he pulled into the infield. That saddled the California Highway Patrol officer with a frustrating 10th-place finish. With Jeff on the sidelines for the duration, it was up to Seth to fly the family flag. He did just that. Like his win at the Imperial Raceway last October, he simply ran away from the field. By the end of the fifth lap, he had about a 1/3 straightaway advantage over the second-place car. However, the runner-up started inching closer to him on lap seven. Going into turn one on the 10th circuit, Seth's car slowed dramatically and he coasted to a stop due to his engine dropping a valve. Instead of potentially bagging his initial win of the year, he ended up finishing ninth. Last Saturday at Perris, Jeff was running his 410 car in the USAC/CRA Series. Things did not start out the way he wanted when his car jumped out of gear on his first qualifying lap, and he pulled into the pits. By the time he rolled back into staging, three cars were ahead of him. He would have gotten both of his laps immediately if it had only been two. Thus, he was only given one lap. Driving with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding the car in gear, he ended up 21st with a time of 18.596 . Despite his qualifying time, Jeff placed fourth in his heat race and started 20th in the main. That is when the night unraveled. The temperature at the track in the afternoon was over 100 degrees, and the wind was blowing. The wind kept on blowing until after the main started, and the temperature was still in the low 80s. Conditions ended up being very dusty. While his car was good, as evidenced in his heat race and at the start of the main, Jeff decided to pull in after[i] 14 laps due to the conditions. He ended up finishing 19th. Dyer Motorsports gets this Saturday off but will return to action on July 6th at the Santa Maria Speedway. The show will include both the USAC/CRA Series and the California Lightning Sprints. Jeff will be racing the 410 with USAC/CRA for sure. He is confident that both of the lightning sprint car engines will be repaired and ready to go for the show. If only one is ready, it will go in Seth's car, as he is still ranked fourth in CLS points. The father-son duo from Yucca Valley, California last appeared at Santa Maria with the CLS on August 6th, 2022. Jeff finished 13th in the main, and Seth was one spot behind in 14th. Jeff's last appearance at the track with USAC/CRA was on July 3rd, 2021, and he placed 13th. In 2024, the following marketing partners will help keep the Dyers on track. - FAST FLOWDYNAMICS TEAM READY FOR USAC/CRA RACE AT PERRIS ON SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, June 20, 2024) The Flowdynamics Racing Team will jump back into action with both feet on Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits its home track, Perris Auto Speedway. The team will be packing a one-two punch with drivers Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams, who is currently the hottest driver in the series. Spectator gates for the night of exciting 410 sprint car racing will open at 5:00 PM, and the first race will take the Steve Russell Green flag at 7:00. Saturday's race will be the fifth of the season for McCarthy, who lives in Riverside, California. Thus far, the 2017 series Rookie of the Year has confined his racing this season to Perris. He has been fast in all four outings. At the season opener, he qualified seventh quickest, but a broken steering box in his heat put the kibosh on the remainder of his night. One month later, he only qualified 13th fastest but won his heat and went from starting 13th to finishing 10th in the main. In the April race, he ended up 13th in qualifying, took the win in his heat, and went from 14th to sixth in the 30-lap main. Had the race been more laps, he was fast enough that he would have finished in the top five. At last month's Salute to Indy, he timed in second fastest at 16.492. That was the 11th-best qualifying lap of all USAC/CRA drivers at the famous track in 2024. However, after placing second in his heat, bad luck reared its ugly head and knocked him out of the main halfway through the race. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, has been a pleasant surprise for the series fans in 2024. He has six top-10 finishes and three top-fives in seven starts this year. The only time he has not finished in the top ten was on April 27th, when drivetrain issues forced him out of the race. Williams has starred big time in the series' last two races. At the famous salute to Indy on Memorial Day Weekend, he led more laps than anybody when he kept the #5W in front of the thundering herd for 17 circuits at Perris. A couple of weeks later, he journeyed to the Kevin Harvick Kern Raceway for the first time in his career. After qualifying ninth, he placed fifth in his heat race. For the main on the 1/3 mile oval, which is located in Bakersfield, California, he started 9th and drove all the way to second for his best finish of 2024. The recent prowess of the 2013 PAS Young Gun Sprint Car Series champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year indicates that his first USAC/CRA Series win is just around the corner. "It is finally here, I would say," he responded when asked if his performance this year has surprised him. "I feel like we have been the best car that's done the worst. We have been fast enough to be in the top three but it just hasn't happened for us for whatever reason. My confidence as a driver is 100% but a lot has to do with the new things we have done that have been working on the car." Coming into Saturday's race at the track where he grew up watching his Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, and his two older brothers, Cody and Austin race, Williams finds himself fourth in series points. That is the highest ranking of the three racing siblings. However, he is not concerned with racking up points. "I just want to win races," he firmly stated. "I am not thinking about points. When I go out there I am trying to win and take care of the car. We cannot afford to crash on stupid stuff. Mostly I am just trying to think about the win." "Yeah, maybe a little bit, but I just want my first win," he responded when asked if the winning races over championships mindset came from his father, who had over 100 main event victories. "Obviously, if a championship came before a win, I wouldn't be mad about it, but I would much rather have a win." "Believe it or not, we have never really had a good battle," he continued when asked about racing with older brothers Cody and Austin. "I have never had a battle with either of them. Either one of them is much faster, and they pass me, or I pass them back real quick. We have never had like a slide job battle where I pass them or they pass me and then there is a slide job pass back in the next corner. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GETS SEASON-BEST 2ND PLACE FINISH LAST SATURDAY - ON TO PERRIS THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, June 19, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. notched his best finish of the 2024 season when he placed second last Saturday night in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series main event presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. The result gave the veteran racer six top-10 finishes in his last nine Southern California starts. This Saturday night, Tafoya will take his driving talents to Perris Auto Speedway for the next round of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Last Saturday's well-attended race was the grand reopening of the famous Santa Maria Speedway, which began operation in 1964. Since 2021, the track only hosted one race and that was in August of 2022. Needless to say, the race was highly anticipated by the fans and all the racers, including Chino Hills, California-based Tafoya. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T sprint car; he qualified second fastest in his group on a track surface that proved to be a tire eater, with a 14.434. That was good for the seventh best of the 25 cars on hand. In the main, the soon-to-be 27-year-old started in the ninth position. The track was still tough on tires and to succeed, drivers were going to have to manage them. Tafoya did just that. By the time the race ended, he had his best finish of 2024 and his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. "You had to make sure, especially in the second half of the race, that you were not blowing off the tires," Tafoya said. "You had to stay patient. I kind of waited for things to come my way and took my opportunities when I had to. It's good to finally have a night where everything goes our way and to put a good run in the books." "The track was pretty tough," Tafoya continued. "It started taking rubber early in the night. A couple times they reworked it but it seemed to go back to what it was pretty quick. Our setup was kind of staying the same all night. We were just watching the track. We were quick in qualifying and that helped us out in the heat race. In the main event, we stayed patient, saved our tires, and passed a lot of cars." Tafoya will return to Santa Maria with the USAC/CRA Series on July 5th and 6th. One of the differences those two nights will be Tafoya driving his family owned #51T. "Definitely driving two of the same chassis (DRC), no matter what motor I am running, helps out a lot," Tafoya said about set up for the next race at the track. "So, it has been pretty simple lately." This Saturday, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year is focusing on qualifying. It has not been where he would like it, and he is set on improving. In the four races of Perris this year, he has qualified 10th, 14th, 12th, and 8th. That can be a big hindrance with other cars starting in front of him in the main events. "I just really, really need to focus on qualifying," he said. "That really hurts me later in the night. For me, it is almost trying to drive too hard. Trying to get a good lap time. Maybe for me, tone it down a little bit on Saturday night. Just need everything right, hit everything smooth, and make sure I am carrying my speed." In points chases, Tafoya's second place finish last Saturday saw him jump from eight to fifth in the USCS standings. Tafoya will enter the fray eighth in the standings this Saturday at Perris. He is only 12 points out of seventh and only 65 out of fourth. For fans who want to see the talented Tafoya in action on Saturday, spectator gates at Perris Auto Speedway will open at 5:00 PM in the first race will be at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at the following website or by calling one eight hundred 595-4849. For fans who do not wish to buy tickets in advance, plenty of tickets will be available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the city of Perris. - IN THE THICK OF THE USAC/CRA CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT, AJ BENDER HEADS TO PERRIS SATURDAY
(Perris, CA, June 20, 2024) The saying "Good things come to those who wait" seems to apply to AJ Bender's season in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The San Diego, California resident not only won his first series event at Perris Auto Speedway on April 27th, but he also finds himself locked in a tight, early-season point battle for the USAC/CRA championship. Bender should be no stranger to longtime Southern California racing fans. After moving from Texas with his family when he was five or six years old, he and older brother Bobby eventually became regulars in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series. Both made big impressions as fast, very capable drivers and in 2008, AJ won the CLS Rookie of the Year award. After a few years in the CLS, Bender transitioned into the tough world of USAC/CRA 410 sprint car racing. He also had planned on competing in the newly created Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car Series (now known as the GAS Chassis Young Gun Series) when it debuted in 2013. At the time, the Young Guns series was for drivers 14-21 with no prior sprint car experience. Since he fell within the age range, he was also allowed to run with the Young Guns. That is, he was allowed to compete with the Young Guns in one race. At the 2013 season opener, Bender put such a whipping on the Young Guns field that a new rule was introduced. While there was no official name for the rule, it quickly became known as the "Bender Rule." That was due to how badly he whipped the competition. From that day forward, drivers with USAC/CRA experience were no longer eligible to compete in the Young Gun Series. That rule still stands today. "Yeah, I know about the rule," Bender laughed when reminded. "I was very bummed about the rule. It is hard to believe that was 11 years ago. In the seasons since his only Young Guns win, Bender, now 31, has honed his skill and has become a talented driver. While the majority of his racing has been confined to Perris, he has proved to be very adaptable at any track he competes on. His thrilling win in the sprint car portion at the 2021 Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway put the fans on their feet at the end of the race. Over the last few years, he has also scored wins with the occasional ride in a lightning sprint car. The most recent one of those came while driving for Northern California's Brian Fonseca at the Ventura Raceway on May 11th. Any victory is nice, but one that eluded Bender was a win in the USAC/CRA Series. Considered the premiere traditional sprint car series west of the Mississippi, wins with the group are not easy to come by. Bender was aware of that, and despite a couple of heartbreaks, he never quit trying. He had not picked up a win through his first 118 starts in the West Coast group. That all changed on Saturday, April 27th, at Perris. Bender was not having a spectacular season through the year's first four races. All told, he had one top 10 finish. That came at the Cocopah Speedway on March 23rd when he placed fifth. In the other four races, he was 12th and 16th at Perris and 15th at the Mohave Valley Raceway. At the race on April 27th, he qualified ninth fastest and won his 10-lap heat race. That placed him on the pole for the main. Over the years, the pole at Perris has not produced a lot of winners. This night it would be different. In one of the best races at the track in recent years, Bender, driving the #21 DRC powered by a Shaver Engine and owned by his mom and dad, jumped into the lead, and set the pace for the first three circuits. The 30 lapper had seven lead changes, and Bender was engaged in every one of them. Performing flawlessly on the track's famous cushion, he reclaimed the lead for two laps on lap 11. He then led laps 14 through 19 and finally 21 through 30. Unlike many drivers who luck into their first win, this victory was anything but that. It was a hard-fought-for, well-earned triumph. "Absolutely, the feeling was through the roof," Bender exclaimed of his first USAC/CRA win. "A feeling of what I have been trying for has finally been accomplished. But I told my dad when we left for home that night to forget it and go on to the next one. We have a long season ahead of us." "Maybe when I was younger, not that I did not care, but I did not take the time to learn this stuff," the driver continued. "We have been with the CRA for a long time but we really never ran a full schedule. We pretty much only ran Perris. I feel like in the past four or five years I have done my homework. You know, taking the time to learn about the car and what I am feeling and what can make me go faster. I feel like a lot of my progression has been in the last four or five years. Kind of leading up to it (the first CRA win). I feel a lot of the time I have been close and I have had good cars. But it is racing and stuff happens." That win lit a fire under Bender. There have been two races since. The annual Salute to Indy at Perris on May 25th and the Golden Empire Clash at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway two weeks ago. The Dallas, Texas-born racer finished fifth and third in those races, respectively. The results have thrown him into the middle of a red hot championship race. The top six drivers are only 84 points apart. Bender is in the middle of the mix in third and is only seven points out of second. "That alone is really cool," he enthusiastically answered when asked how it felt being in third place. "Outside of when I ran the midget two years ago for a full season, I have never run a full season in a series in my racing career. This was kind of like a cool opportunity. This year, my dad said, 'let's try to run the full season.' I have always felt like I could be a good points racer because I feel like I am pretty consistent. On bad nights I try to come away with something out of it. It (being in the points race) makes me feel a little more confident and solidifies that I can do this. It is still a long season. Anything can happen. I try not to think about it too much, but it is hard not to think about it. It is cool to see your name on the stuff that they post." Not only is Bender in the thick of the points race but his mom and dad are as well. In the car owner points, they are second, only seven points back of the leader. "That is pretty cool," he responded about his parent's lofty position in the owner points. "Especially since they (USAC/CRA) are offering money and stuff for the entrants." Bender was responding from his parent's garage while working on the racecar for this Saturday's event at Perris. The friendly driver tries to work on the car a couple of days a week. It is hard to be there every night as he, his wife Tiffany, and daughter Reagan, who will soon turn five, live near downtown San Diego. The car is 45 minutes to an hour away in Ramona. Family time with his wife and daughter is a big priority. Between the family, work, and living quite a distance from most of his competitors, he does not spend a lot of time with them. "We don't hang out outside of racing, but we are all pretty cordial to each other," Bender said of his relationship with the other drivers. "That is nice. If they ask me something, I would not tell them a lie. I would tell them what is going on. It is kind of cool to be doing that with people you consider to be your friends. The racing community is kind of like your family. It is kind of nice not to have grudges or really dislike somebody. But at the same time, I wouldn't give them an inch." To see if AJ Bender can pick up his second win of the year at Perris on Saturday, the fun begins when the gates open at 5:00 p.m. The night's first race will start at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available 24 hours a day online at the following website https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1366776 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
Brent is returning to action after working on his tan at the river. Grant spent his vacation In Puerto Vallarta. Despite missing the last two USAC/CRA races, both drivers are still ranked in the top 20 in points. Brent, a three-time lightning sprint car champion who is a rookie in the best traditional sprint car series west of the Mississippi, is currently 17th in the series championship standings. Grant, who captured the 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award, is 20th. Saturday will be the fourth appearance of the season for the beautiful Sexton Gatlin Racing #22 and #44 cars on the banked half-mile clay oval in Riverside County. Both drivers are hoping for better results than they achieved in the first three outings. For Brent, a 52-year-old who first raced at Perris over a quarter of a century ago, he has finished 13th, 15th, and 16th at the track this year. Grant, who will turn 20 in less than a month, has an 18th, 19th, and 21st. Brent's 13th at Perris was his best outing in the series in 2024. Grant's best USAC/CRA finish thus far in 2024 was an 11th at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6th. During his 2023 Rookie of the Year campaign, Grant had five top-10 finishes and one top-5. His best finish was fifth at Bakersfield Speedway on June 24th. In seven appearances at Perris last season, he had two top-10 results. The first of the two was in the prestigious Salute to Indy on Memorial Day weekend. He closed his Perris Auto Speedway season on November 11th when he finished eighth. Between the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints and PAS Senior Sprints, Brent started eight main events at Perris in 2023. His biggest successes came in the POWRi Series where he won April 15, placed second on May 27th, and sixth on November 11th. On June 10th of last year, he drove in both the USAC/CRA Series and the Seniors. He placed seventh in a shocking first appearance in the "Big Boy" USAC/CRA main. That came moments after he finished second in the Senior main. Spectator gates at Perris will open at 5:00 p.m., and racing will follow at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5, and children 5 and under are free. - BUSY RACER EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADS TO SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, June 13, 2024) Coming after his busiest week of the 2024 season, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will return to action this Saturday night, June 15th, with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. It will be the first race at the track in nearly two years. At the track's last race on August 6th, 2022, Tafoya finished eighth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA main event. Tafoya, who calls Chino Hills, California home, got off to an inauspicious start to the 2024 campaign. It was not of his own doing, he just seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Finally, his fortune has changed. He enters this Saturday's event coming off his most impressive race of the year when he came from seventh on the start to place fourth in the main last Saturday in the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. The exciting result came after he qualified fourth fastest and placed seventh in his heat. The inspiring night at Kern saw Tafoya record his fourth straight USAC/CRA Series top-10 finish. It also allowed him to climb higher in the championship point standings. He is now ranked eighth and is only 52 points out of fifth. "Yeah, for sure, we just have to keep doing what we are doing," Tafoya said after his best finish of 2024. "We have to make sure we can do everything on our part. A lot of the stuff that has been going on this year has been out of our hands. We cannot get down on ourselves. We have just got to keep plugging and keep trying. Things have been going better, and I think we are definitely headed in the right direction." "It is definitely a lot of work to show up and only get three laps in like we have at a lot of races this year," the friendly driver said when asked about the frustration of being taken out at races. "Like I said, we just have to keep plugging away and keep trying. Last weekend, we were really close. It gets the juices back flowing." Tafoya is also eighth in the USCS standings going into this week's historic, grand re-opening race at Santa Maria. Besides his eighth-place result two years ago. His other post-Covid finish at the track was a sixth on July 3rd, 2021. "I really have no idea," Tafoya commented on what he expected Saturday's track to be like. "We have been away from there for so long. Usually, that track is pretty unpredictable in the first place. We will have to see when we get there, I guess. I really do not have a lot of experience there. So, it is hard for me to really like it or dislike it. I am just happy to go racing anywhere." After racing at Bloomington, Indiana, on the seventh, Tafoya had to fly back to So Cal in the morning to race last Saturday at Kern. He was in the "Hoosier State" to contest four nights of sprint car racing on the same card as USAC's Indiana Midget Week. Unfortunately, the first race at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis was rained out on June 4th. Twenty-four hours later, on Wednesday the 5th, Tafoya and the team journeyed south to the Lawrenceburg Speedway. On a track that had been reconfigured since he was last there, Tafoya set the fastest lap in qualifying at 14.632. Later that night, he started 12th in the main event and drove forward to finish eighth. On Thursday, June 6th, Tafoya headed to the Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Indiana. A seventh-place finish in his heat saw him relegated to the B Main, where he started fifth and ended up second. That secured his ticket into the A Main event, where he started 19th and moved all the way up to the 12th place spot before the Checkers ended the race. At his last race in the Midwest, the 26-year-old placed eighth in his heat at Bloomington. That again saw him head to the B Main. He started 15th and passed 9 cars in just 12 laps to finish 6th. However, that left him just shy of a transfer to the A Main before heading to the airport. The gates for Saturday's grand reopening of Santa Maria Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will be at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. - BRODY ROA IS READY TO RETURN TO HIS BEST TRACK THIS SATURDAY
(Cypress, CA, June 12, 2024) This Saturday night, June 15th, many California race fans will see something they fretted would never happen: the grand reopening of the popular Santa Maria Speedway. Like race fans, the drivers are also elated about the rebirth of the Central Coast banked oval. None of them will be more excited than Brody Roa, who will be competing in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Dating back to the start of the 2017 season, the pleasant Garden Grove, California racer has started eight races on the track that is located within San Luis Obispo County. Amazingly, Roa finished in the top three seven times! Among those were four wins, a second-place finish, and a third. The only time he did not finish in the top three at Santa Maria over that period of time came in a 2019 race when he finished 16th. His main event finishing average at the track is 3.50 since 2017. Take away the 16th-place finish, and the average would have been an astounding 1.71. Between Covid in 2020 and the track being shuttered in 2021, Roa has only competed at Santa Maria two times since 2019. On July 3rd, 2021, he finished third in the main. The last time the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars raced at the track was in August of 2022. To say the least, it was a memorable night. First of all, it was the first night the track had been open since shutting down a year earlier. It was also the final event at the track before this coming weekend's race. A sellout crowd was on hand, and they witnessed Roa pull off a rare USAC/CRA feat. He steered Jayson May's 360-powered car to win the main event against a full field of 410s. Unfortunately, the track that opened in 1964, was shuttered again after that. That all changes this Saturday. Last week, when the USAC/CRA Series was at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway for the Golden Empire Clash, Roa set the fifth-fastest time in qualifying. That placed him on the outside of the second row for his 10-lap heat. The 2023 series champion stayed second for the race's first seven laps. Entering turn three on the eighth circuit, he used a textbook slider that propelled him into the lead and onto the victory. Combined with his race win in the USCS event on the 1/3 mile oval at the start of May, Roa has won heat races each time he has been at the track this year. Things were looking like Roa was going to have a great night. After winning the heat, he started inside row two for the 30-lap main. Early on, he was running third. However, engine problems started to slow the gorgeous #8M. On lap 18, Roa decided to call it a night. Afterward, he stated, "I didn't want to jeopardize hurting anyone." To see if Roa can make it three wins in four USCS starts, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Santa Maria. Qualifying will begin at 5:00, and the first race will be at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo, California. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - GRANT SEXTON TAKES SEVENTH IN USCS MAIN AT THE VENTURA RACEWAY, FATHER BRENT 14TH
(Lakeside, CA, June 7, 2024) After a slow start to the 2024 racing season, young Grant Sexton has been warming up like the spring weather. Last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway, the teen placed seventh in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, 30-lap main event. That gave him three top-10 finishes, including two top-five, in his last three starts. His teammate and father Brent, who was debuting a brand new car, finished 14th in the 30-lapper. The father-and-son Sexton Gatlin Racing team made the 195-mile journey from its Lakeside, California headquarters to the 1/5-mile track located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. It was Grant's first appearance at the track since last Thanksgiving and Brent's first competitive laps at the facility since a ninth-place finish in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series feature on October 26, 2019. Brent began the night by starting second and finishing fourth in his heat in the new AAA Chassis. One race later, Grant entered the battle zone for heat race #3. He began in second and scored a convincing win in the eight-lapper. Of the two, Grant had the choice starting position for the main, coming from the outside of the front row. Brent started midpack on the wide side of row six. Grant was second on the start, but a bobble in turn four on the first lap cost him dearly. He slipped all the way back to the fifth spot. Soon thereafter, a red flag waved due to a car getting into the wall and tipping over. In his best move of the night, Grant went to the inside and went from fifth to third in one corner on the first lap after the restart. In what was turning into a wild beginning, in the same spot where he passed two cars, Grant got sideways and was clobbered by another driver. The other racer stopped bringing out a yellow, and Grant dropped three spots to sixth. When the race restarted, Grant quickly worked his way up to fourth. Not too far behind, his father had skillfully worked his way to eighth. Several times, Grant challenged the third-place racer, but in the closing laps, he slipped back to seventh, where he was when the checkered flag ended the race. Brent also dropped in the closing laps and crossed the line in 14th. According to Brent on Wednesday, racing is a no-go for this week for Grant, who is vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Earlier in the week Brent was undecided if he would head to the Barona Speedway for the SoCal Lightning Series race. Two weeks ago, the 52-year-old outdistanced the SCLS field on the same San Diego oval for his first win of the 2024 season. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - LOGAN WILLIAMS HEADS TO KEVIN HARVICK'S KERN COUNTY RACEWAY AFTER IMPRESSIVE SALUTE TO INDY
(Ontario, CA, June 7, 2024) One thing the big dogs in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series do not need is another competitor to challenge their supremacy. In the case of third generation driver Logan Williams, that is just what he is doing. After an impressive fourth place finish in the Salute to Indy at Perris two weeks ago, the Yorba Linda, California driver will make his inaugural appearance at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in the Golden Empire Clash this Saturday night. Through the first four races of the 2024 campaign, Williams finished in the top 10 each time. That kept him in the top 5 in series points until the April 27th race when drive train issues sent him to the pit area early with the 22nd place finish. Pushing that setback aside, the youngest of the three racing Williams brothers went on a tear at the Salute to Indy. The race turned out to be what was arguably the best of his young career. In the latest edition of the prestigious race, a race his Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, earned his first ever sprint car win at in 1983, and that his older brothers have subsequently won, Williams led most of the way in the event at Perris Auto Speedway on May 25th before eventually finishing fourth. After qualifying fifth fastest on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval, Williams placed third in his 10-lap heat race. For the main, he started on the outside of the front row. He rocketed into the lead on the fourth circuit and set the pace for the next 17 laps. That may sound simple, but it was nothing like that. He was challenged hard and fought tooth and nail with some of the best traditional sprint car drivers California and Arizona have to offer. In the end, he slipped back to fourth and stated that the finish was "hard to swallow." Williams' time of 18.387 was the fastest lap of any driver in the 30-lapper. The finish was Williams' best of the 2024 campaign and goes along with a fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 22nd. It also pushed him into a tie for fifth with his brother Austin in the USAC/CRA championship standings. In an interesting scenario, while they are tied for fifth, their older sibling, Cody, is one position behind. Williams will be flying solo for the Flowdynamics team on Saturday at Kern. Riverside, California's Matt McCarthy will rejoin teammate Williams when the series returns to Perris on June 22nd. McCarthy gave the Flowdynamics team a tough, one-two punch on the night at the Salute to Indy. In his best qualifying effort of the season, the father of two sizzled the track with a lap of 16.492. That was the second fastest time of the night. In the heat race, which pitted McCarthy and Williams against each other, McCarthy came from sixth to finish second, one spot ahead of his Flowdynamics partner. In a rarity, the two teammates had the fastest laps in the race, turning in identical 17.388 times. McCarthy did it on lap 10, and Williams did it four laps earlier on the sixth go-around. McCarthy's prowess in both qualifying and the heat placed him in the fifth starting spot for the main. The friendly driver was fast over the first two laps, but a tangle with another car in turn one on lap three brought out the race's first yellow flag. A quick trip to the work area and the pretty #28M was back on the track for the restart. Unfortunately, McCarthy's time on the track did not last long. He slowed and pulled to a stop on lap 15 and retired for the night. Officially, he ended up 12th. Even though he is not racing for points in 2024 and has only contested the four races at Perris thus far, McCarthy is tied for 18th in the USAC/CRA standings. Adult tickets for Saturday's Kern race are $25.00. Juniors 6-12 get in for $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard, Interstate 5, and S Enos Lane in Bakersfield. The website is https://www.kernraceway.com/ and the office phone is (661) 835-1264. - BRODY ROA SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE GOLDEN EMPIRE CLASH THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Cypress, CA, June 5, 2024) Fresh off a relaxing vacation with his wife and daughters at the river, Brody Roa returns to action this Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes an appearance at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway for the Golden Empire Clash. It will be Roa's first USAC/CRA appearance at the track since a win on April 29, 2023. The grandstands will open at 5:00 PM, hot laps will start at 6:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Refreshed after the family vacation, Roa will be back in Jayson May's #8M sprint car. Two weeks ago, he steered the same car from a 9th place starting position to a podium finish when he took third at Perris Auto Speedway. Roa and May have already been to the track located adjacent to Interstate 5 one time this year. That came one month ago when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, visited the track for the first time. Fresh off a win in the inaugural USCS race across town at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks prior, Roa qualified 10th fastest on the night and won his heat race from the second row. That established him as one of the favorites for the main event. However, before the main, Mother Nature attacked the track with two heavy rain showers that forced cancelation of the 30-lapper. Dating back to 2021, Roa has been to Kern eight times. His busiest year at the track came in 2021 when he appeared there four times. Of the four, he won two open comp races and finished second and seventh in a pair of USAC/CRA shows. That should have been three wins and a second. He had a commanding lead in the first USAC/CRA race with five laps to go. However, the main featured a plethora of yellow flags, and that bit Roa when he ran out of fuel. He had to restart at the back and clawed his way forward to seventh in the final five laps. The veteran Garden Grove, California driver only made one appearance at the track in 2022. That was for a USAC West Coast 360 race, where he finished 17th. Like earlier this season, in 2023, Roa's first appearance at the track was wiped out by rain. He then came back at the end of April for the fourth win of his USAC/CRA championship season. Saturday will be Roa's ninth race of 2024. So far, he has recorded two wins, a third, a fourth, and an eighth. On two occasions, he did not start the main. At Cocopah on March 23rd, a broken drive shaft before his heat race knocked him out for the night. A couple of weeks later, when he was making his seasonal debut for May at the Mohave Valley Raceway, his steering wheel came off while qualifying. That sent him hard into the tractor tires that keep cars from entering the pits ending his night. The other race was the aforementioned rainout at Kern last month. After this week's race at Kern, Roa has a date with the USCS at one of his best tracks, the Santa Maria Speedway. It will be the grand reopening of the track that first began operation 60 years ago in 1964. One week later, it will be on to the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $25.00. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADING TO THIS WEEK'S SPRINT CAR PORTION OF INDIANA MIDGET WEEK
(Chino, CA, June 4, 2024) A few hours after tangling with the wall at the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. was at Los Angeles International Airport and hopping on a flight for this week's Indiana Midget Week. Tuesday through Friday, the talented driver was slated to contest the sprint car portions of the four shows before returning to California Saturday morning for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya's trip to the Midwest was slated to kick off tonight, June 4th, at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, rain washed out the event. So, on Wednesday, Tafoya and his crew will head 90 miles southeast to the new surface at the Lawrenceburg Speedway. Thursday will feature a longer drive to Putnamville's Lincoln Park Speedway, which is 140 miles northwest. Friday's journey from Putnamville to Bloomington Speedway will be a mere 40 miles. While Tafoya is based in Chino Hills, California, he is no stranger to the three Indiana tracks he will be competing on this week. Since 2021, he has raced three times at Lawrenceburg, two times at Bloomington, and two times at Lincoln Park. Last year, during the grueling and highly competitive Indiana Sprint Week, Tafoya sat in the main events at Lincoln Park and Bloomington, finishing 18th and 19th, respectively. After the race at Bloomington, Tafoya will embark on the longest portion of the trip. He will fly 2000 miles from Indianapolis to Los Angeles. Once he lands in L.A., he will hop into a car and make the 113-mile drive to Bakersfield for the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on Saturday night. Last Saturday, while Tafoya was racing in the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17F at Ventura, his father, Eddie Sr., who was the 2016 Perris Auto Speedway Senior Sprint Car Champion, was hauling the family-owned #51T car to Indiana for this week's races. At last week's USCS race in Ventura, Tafoya, 26, started in the fifth spot and finished fourth in the third heat race. That put him on the pole for the 30-lap main event. On the first two tries to start the main event, Tafoya raced into the lead. However, the first time the race began, it was red-flagged due to a crash in turn one. The second time the green flag signaled the start of the action, cars got together just past the start-finish line, resulting in a yellow flag. On the third try to get the race underway, Tafoya again was the first car across the starting line. However, when he got to the first corner, something in his steering broke, and he became a passenger. He slid across the track, got into the wall, and tipped over. He was not injured, but the car was done for the night. - BRENT SEXTON WINS BARONA SCLS MAIN - RACING USCS SPRINTS AT VENTURA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, May 30, 2024) Three-time lightning sprint car racing champion Brent Sexton posted his first victory of 2024 when he outdistanced the field in the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday at the Barona Speedway. This Saturday night, June 1st, the veteran driver and his son, Grant, will be back in action in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway. Sexton, 52, was making his 13th start of the 2024 season. Switching back and fourth between his 360 sprint car and his lightning sprint, it was his fifth start in the smaller car this year. Once his home track, Saturday was his first appearance at Barona since he placed second in a POWRi Southwest race last July 8th. It was only his second time racing at the track since 2022. Making the short drive from his home in nearby Lakeside, Sexton was driving his familiar #44 on the San Diego County quarter-mile oval. It was one of only two races on the SCLS schedule in 2024 that cars would race without wings. That was no bother for Sexton who has raced wingless numerous times in lightning sprints over the years and now does in full-size sprint cars in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series and USCS competition. Starting fourth in his eight-lap heat race, Sexton cut to the inside in the first bend on lap one and hijacked second place. On a track that was dry at that time of the evening, he stayed there for the duration. The second place run in his heat earned the likable Tennessee native the inside row two starting spot for the main. With the sun gone, the track was much racier than it was for the heats and much racier than it was for the first race of the year a couple of weeks earlier. That set up an exciting battle for the drivers and fans. Eager to perform, Sexton put on a show in the main event. He got a great start when the green flag began the race and was second going into turn one. He tried to knife his way into the lead in turn two, but that attempt was thwarted. What happened next was some of the best laps of lightning sprint car racing Barona fans have seen in years. Sexton and early leader Peter Benker put on a slider fest that saw the lead change hands five times from turn two on the second go-around until turn two on lap three. When Sexton took the lead on lap three, he led the remainder of the way. However, it was anything but easy. Benker fought him hard for several laps. Even though Sexton increased his advantage, Benker stayed within striking distance the entire way. One slip-up by Sexton could have cost him the race. Fortunately, he drove a near-perfect race for his initial win in 2024. This Saturday at Ventura, Sexton will be in a brand-new Triple X car. The last time he raced at Bakersfield was two weeks ago when he placed sixth in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event. On the same night, Grant, who was last season's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, placed fifth in the USCS feature. Grant will enter this week's race 15th in the USCS championship standings. Spectator gates for the first USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. - TAFOYA JUMPS TWO SPOTS IN USAC/CRA STANDINGS - HEADS TO VENTURA FOR USCS RACE SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, May 30, 2024) Shaking off the disappointment of getting clobbered from behind on the first lap and suffering a flat tire the previous week, Eddie Tafoya Jr. finished eighth last Saturday night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway. The finish allowed the likable driver to climb from 10th to eighth in the series championship standings. This Saturday, he will be competing with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, at the Ventura Raceway. For Tafoya, who finished third in the USAC/CRA standings in 2022, things started off on the right foot at Perris. He was the seventh fastest driver on the premises in hot laps. Not long thereafter, he set the eighth-fastest time in qualifying with a lap of 16.922. That placed the Chino Hills, California resident on the outside of row two in the second heat race on the 28-year-old half-mile oval. After the support divisions completed their preliminary races, the USAC/CRA cars and stars rolled onto the track for their heats. Tafoya, who will be 27 in a little over a month, scored an impressive win in the second 10-lapper of the night. His best lap in the heat was 17.571. While that was only the third-fastest time in the race, it was still an impressive performance in his first USAC/CRA heat win of the 2024 campaign. Tafoya started and finished eighth in the 30-lap main on the pleasant Southern California night. His third top 10 in the series this season propelled Tafoya up to eighth in the championship standings. Going into the next scheduled race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on June 8th, he is only 13 points out of seventh. This Saturday night, June 1st, Tafoya will head to the Ventura Raceway for the third race in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Driving the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T 360, Tafoya is ninth in the USCS standings. He is only four points behind the eighth-place driver, 10 points behind the driver in seventh, and only 13 points out of sixth. A good night could see him leapfrog all three. Tafoya, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, scored the first fast time of his career at Ventura in May of 2022. On the same night, he finished fifth in the main event. Last November at Ventura, he made his first appearance in an Inland Rigging car at the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix. A flat tire on the opening night handcuffed him for the weekend, and he missed transferring to Saturday's finale by two spots. Spectator gates for the first USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. - BRODY ROA RACES TO THIRD PLACE FINISH IN 71 ST SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Cypress, CA, May 30, 2024) Southern California Sprint car racing star Brody Roa made it two podium finishes in a row when he placed third last Saturday night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway. It was his fourth top-four finish in five main event starts in 2024. Things did not start the way Roa and car owner Jayson May would have liked. A small engine issue forced them to miss hot laps. However, in qualifying at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval, Roa turned in a lap of 16.990. That was the ninth fastest time of the night and placed the Garden Grove, California racer on the outside of row two in the third heat race. The veteran steered the gorgeous #8M car to a third-place finish in the 10-lapper. Roa, who won the prestigious Salute to Indy in 2021, started the 30-lap main event in ninth. He was around the top five in the first half of the competitive race, which was a fierce battle from the green to the checkered flag. However, in the last half of the race, the car and the veteran driver began to fly. Running the outside, he moved all the way up to the third-place spot. While he was closing in on second, he ran out of time and finished third. Roa's best lap of the main event, an 18.576, came on lap 19. It was the sixth fastest of the 17 drivers in the race, and it coincided with when he began to pick off cars. He passed six cars in the main event, which was the second-best of any driver. "Yeah, it was good there in the feature," Roa told the crowd after the race. "In some runs we were running everybody down and in other runs we were just kind of hanging. We were really good at the end. It is a positive night. We moved forward, we had some good speed, and we are gaining on it. Jason, his whole family, and all his helpers put this together. It is the nicest racecar out here. It is a pleasure to drive. I am glad I get to come every week and sit in it." Between the USAC/CRA Series and the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, Roa has started five main events. He has finished in the top four, four times. His results include two wins in the USCS. This week, Roa, his wife Tailor, and daughters Addi and Rylee are on vacation. His next racing appearance is scheduled for June 8th when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. - FLOWDYNAMICS DRIVERS RETURN TO ACTION AT SATURDAY'S PERRIS SALUTE TO INDY
(Ontario, CA, May 23, 2024) After a month off from racing, the Flowdynamics duo of Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams will return to action this Saturday night, May 25th, when Perris Auto Speedway hosts the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint cars in the 71st Salute to Indy. Spectator gates for the night of family fun and 900 horsepower sideways racing will open at 5:00 PM, and the first race will begin at 7:00. The last time the two drivers were in action was on the same famous Riverside County Half Mile Clay Oval on April 27th. That night ended when they experienced two totally different fortunes in the exciting 30-lap main event. Earlier, each had experienced success in the preliminaries. Yorba Linda, California's Williams entered the night fourth in the series championship point standings. In the first four races of the year, he had finished in the top 10 each time, including a season-best fifth at Perris on March 16th. He kicked his night off with a dazzling qualifying lap of 16.676. That was the fourth fastest time in the 22-car field. McCarthy, a father of two who makes his home in Riverside, California, had a lap of 17.089. That was the 14th fastest time of the twenty-two cars on hand. Williams, who, like always, was racing against his two older brothers, was the first of the duo to compete in a 10 lap heat race. The likable driver started on the inside of the fourth row. Unfortunately, he finished fifth. That ruled him out of the invert for the first three rows in the main event. However, he would start inside row four in the 30-lapper. In the second 10-lap heat race, McCarthy, who was only competing for the third time this year, was outside the front row. In a dazzling performance, he ran away from the field for his first heat race victory of the 2024 season. As previously stated, Williams was lined up inside row four when the field assembled on the track for the 30-lap finale. McCarthy had a much tougher road to hoe as he came from outside the seventh row in 14th. Unfortunately, Williams' race only lasted two laps. Drivetrain issues saw him slow to a stop near the end of the front straightaway and retire to the pit area. That broke his string of top-10 finishes and he ended up with a disappointing 22nd. McCarthy's fortune was quite the opposite. After disappointment due to an issue with the steering box knocking him out of his heat and the B main at the season opener, he finished 10th on March 16th. At the April race, he put on a show for the fans. The now-veteran driver moved forward throughout the race and drove all the way up to sixth. If the race had been more than 30 laps, he would have passed more cars and would have had his first top-five finish of the year. Over the last two years, the Flowdynamics duo has done well overall at the Salute to Indy, with three top-10 finishes. Williams was fifth last year and sixth in 2022. McCarthy finished two spots behind Williams in eighth in 2023. In 2022, McCarthy placed 15th. Adult tickets to see the Flowdynamics drivers in action at the Salute to Indy are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For those who do not wish to buy advance tickets, plenty will be available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. Take the 215 Freeway. Exit at the Ramona Expressway and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. The track website is http://www.perrisautospeedway.com/, and the office phone number is (951) 940-0134. - GRANT AND BRENT SEXTON EACH RECORD TOP TENS AT BAKERSFIELD - SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, May 23, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing's father and son team of Brent and Grant Sexton each raced at the Bakersfield Speedway last Saturday night. Nineteen-year-old Grant finished fifth in round number two of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Brent placed sixth in the companion California Lightning Sprint car series main event. After a five-race slump that did not see him record one top-10 finish, Grant has two top-5 results in the last two weeks. The first came on May 11th, when he went from 13th to third in the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car main event at the Barona Speedway. Last Saturday at Bakersfield, he started 11th in the 30-lap USCS feature and impressively marched forward to his fifth-place finish. In his Bakersfield preliminaries, Grant qualified sixth fastest in the 20-car field and had a top three slip from his grasp when he got into the slick on the last bend of his heat race. For family patriarch Brent, who just returned from his birthday festivities, including a fly fishing trip to Montana and a week in Mexico, he only raced on the CLS side of the program. The veteran racer was in the process of putting together a new car to run in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series and with the USCS. The three-time lightning sprint car champion began the night by qualifying sixth fastest in the 14-car CLS field. He then placed third in his heat race. In the CLS 20-lap main, the Tennessee native started fifth and ended up sixth. This week, the SGR drivers return to Perris for the 71st Salute to Indy. For the first time, Brent will compete in the race that began in 1948. During his Rookie of the Year season in USAC/CRA in 2023, Grant placed ninth in the Salute main event. Brent currently sits 15th in the USAC/CRA standings. He still holds bragging rights at the dinner table over Grant, who is five points behind in 16th. Through the first five races on the schedule, Brent's best finish in the series was a 13th at Perris on March 16th. Grant's best result was an 11th at Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6th. His best Perris finish was an 18th at the season opener on February 24th. For Saturday's Salute to Indy, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. Plenty will be available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. - AFTER A BAD BREAK AT BAKERSFIELD, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HOPES TO CHANGE HIS LUCK SATURDAY AT SALUTE TO INDY
(Chino, CA, May 23, 2024) After a bad break in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. hopes to get things righted in the 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. It will be his first appearance in the prestigious race since an eighth-place finish in 2022. Last week at the USCS race in Bakersfield, Tafoya, 26, got off to a good start. Competing against 20 other drivers in qualifying, the friendly racer recorded the second quickest time when he toured "The West Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval" in 13.890. That made him one of only two drivers to break the 14-second barrier on the night. By the time Tafoya drove the immaculate Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T onto the "Okie Bowl" for his heat race, the surface was dry and slick, and passing was going to be at a premium. Tafoya started on the third row and found a sweet spot on the low line. He passed two cars by the time he exited turn two on the first circuit. That put him in third place, where he finished in the prelim. Inland Rigging teammate Tommy Dunkel won the heat. The track crew reworked the surface, and it looked racy for the 30-lap finale. That all looked good for Tafoya, who was starting inside the second row directly behind teammate Dunkel. However, the bad luck that had plagued him the first part of the season struck again! Early in the main, a car clobbered him from behind and flattened his left rear tire. Tafoya limped around the track until lap four, when he pulled to the infield and out of the race with a 20th-place finish. In heading back to Perris on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the track where he had one of his two top-10 finishes in 2024. At Perris, on April 27th, the Chino Hills, California resident placed ninth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car main event. His other top-10 this season came on April 6th, when he placed sixth at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. Tafoya enters Saturday's sprint car war 10th in USAC/CRA Series points. He will climb higher up on that ladder before the night ends. We will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. - BRODY ROA WINS HIS SECOND SCLS SPRINT MAIN, NOW FOCUSES ON SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS
(Cypress, CA, May 22, 2024) Through the first two races in the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging, one driver stands tall on the top of the win chart and the point standings. That driver is Garden Grove, California's Brody Roa, who has won the first two races in series history. The second of the pair came last Saturday night at Scott Schweitzer's Bakersfield Speedway. This Saturday, May 25th, Roa will switch his focus to the 71st running of the Salute to Indy for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at Perris Auto Speedway. The second night of racing for the USCS Series was pretty much as smooth as glass for Roa. That is, it was smooth as glass until a late race red flag made him work extra hard to score a narrow, photo-finish victory. Roa's 14.021 in qualifying was fourth best in the 21-car field. He followed the impressive time trial run with a win in his heat race. After starting fourth on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," he led most of the main event. However, a late race red flag set up a green, white, checkered situation to end the second night in USCS history. Suddenly, the heat turned to raging hot when young Blake Bower came calling. It took everything Roa had to eek out the victory "It was a pretty smooth night," Roa said of last Saturday at the "Okie Bowl." "Decent in qualifying. Got to the front in the heat race and just kind of drove around the infield tires and won that. I did the same thing in the feature but around the fence." Roa was anything but surprised by the thrilling run to the checkered. "When I saw the #3 on the scoreboard, I knew Bower was good," Roa responded when asked if he expected to be challenged after the late race red flag. "I remember looking at the lineup (before the race), and he was starting way back. So, I knew he had come through the field. I got a little defensive after the restart and I was kind of blocking the slider. That kind of opened it up for him to have a close finish like we did." After steering his own equipment to the USAC/CRA championship in 2023 and driving a couple of different cars earlier this year, Roa has been getting settled back into Jayson May's top-of-the-line #8M for the first time since 2022. It has taken some time to adjust, but as evidenced by his two recent wins in the USCS, things are coming around nicely. He hopes things continue to do so Saturday at Perris. The first appearance of Roa in the #8M at the track affectionately known as The PAS, resulted in an eighth-place finish one month ago. "We have had our challenges," Roa said, about transitioning back to May's car. "We just kind of struggled through the first few races getting everything comfortable for me. We have made some changes. He has gone above and beyond by putting some parts on it that I think work and that I have on my stuff. We have worked at it and I think we have all had our fair share of frustrations already this year. But the couple of races we have finished we have won. We cannot hang our heads about that. I feel we are really starting to get rolling now. The car was really comfortable right off the bat at Bakersfield on Saturday. I am looking forward to taking that comfort to Perris this weekend because the last time we were at Perris we kind of fought it all night. Hopefully, this one turns out a lot better than the last attempt." "It is huge," Roa continued about Saturday's Salute to Indy at Perris. "I still have the milk bottle (the bottle of chocolate milk the winner receives at the Salute to Indy) on our TV stand in the living room. Winning that one means a lot. I had the Oval Nationals Trophy somewhere around there, too. I guess that shows kind of how important that one was to me. It is a big deal in my mind." 2024 is a different season for Roa. After the grind to win the USAC/CRA championship in 2023, he is racing for fun this season. The pressure of chasing a title is gone, and he is only chasing wins, not points. That is evident as, despite leading the USCS points, he will miss the next race at Ventura. "I am going to miss the USCS race at Ventura in two weeks," the veteran driver stated. "So, the points deal has not been a concern there. It is nice just going out to race. We did the same kind of deal a few years ago. 2021 I think it was. We put the wing on a few times and missed some CRA races. We just went to put the fun back in it. It is kind of cool doing that again this year. A championship is the biggest feat you can accomplish in this deal. Getting that done last year was really cool. Now it is nice just going out to race." Thanks to Braden Wassen from Fast Time Designs and Bobby Michnowicz from T Shirts By Timeless, Roa will have his brand new shirts available for the first time on Saturday. To get yours, see him in the pits after the night's last race. For Saturday's Salute to Indy, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. We will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. - AFTER MAIN RAINED OUT AT KERN, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS READY FOR BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, May 13, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. got off to a fine start when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, Presented By Inland Rigging, visited Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway for the David Calderwood Memorial on May 4th. A good result in qualifying and in his heat earned him a great starting position in the main event. However, as fast as the 27-car field was, it was not quick enough to beat a pair of rainstorms that hit the track, forcing the main event's cancelation. A field of 27 cars showed up for the race on the 1/3 mile clay oval that sits in the shadows of the more famous paved half-mile, high-banked oval. Tafoya, driving[i] the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, was third fastest in his qualifying group of nine cars with a time of 14.542. That was also the sixth fastest of the 27 cars on hand. Unfortunately, Tafoya's only racing action on the night came in the second heat race. The Chino Hills, California racing star started the 10-lapper in third. The 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2019 USAC/CRA and USAC Southwest Rookie of the Year was in the same spot when the race concluded. Sadly, that heat race would be Tafoya's final event of the night. He was slated to start outside of row four in the main, but two stubborn rainstorms sailed into the track and the main events were canceled. Putting the frustrating, wet night behind him, Tafoya will be back in the #17T when the USCS visits the Bakersfield Speedway this Saturday night, May 18th. Last month at the inaugural USCS race on the same track, the 26-year-old was moving forward in the main event and was up to sixth when mechanical issues knocked him out of the battle. Going into this week's race, he is ninth in USCS series championship points. Tafoya will return to the family-owned #51T when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Perris Auto Speedway for the prestigious 71st Salute to Indy on May 25th. This Saturday at Bakersfield, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). The track website is bakersfieldspeedway.com and the office phone number is (661) 393-3373. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. - DESPITE RAINOUT, BRODY ROA INCREASES LEAD IN USCS STANDINGS - BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY AT BAKERSFIELD
(Cypress, CA, May 12, 2024) Mother Nature must have a crush on Southern California Sprint Car driver Brody Roa. Going into the last race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, Roa had a six-point lead in the point standings of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging. By the time she released her wrath in the form of two rain showers that soaked the quarter-mile oval and washed away the main event, Roa expanded his lead to 18-points. Roa, a father of two young daughters who lives in Garden Grove, California, was coming off a win at the inaugural USCS race on April 20th. That victory came on the other side of town at the 1/3 mile high banked Bakersfield Speedway. Last week, he got off to another good start driving the same #8M of car owner Jayson May that he steered to victory two weeks earlier. In qualifying, he was the third fastest in group two with a time of 14.668. That was good enough to be 10th quickest of the 27 cars on hand. In his heat race, Roa started inside the second row. However, he was not there for long. The wily veteran drove May's car to the front of the pack at the end of the first circuit and kept it there for the duration. The victory gave him two heat race wins in the first two USCS shows. All that was left at that point was to make it two main event wins in a row in the series' inaugural season. However, persistent rain arrived before he had a chance to do so. There was hope that after the initial rain stopped, the track crew would get the surface back in shape and the program would continue. Unfortunately, that plan was upended when more rain rolled in and saturated the clay oval for the second time. Sitting on top of sprint car point standings is nothing new to "The Pride of Garden Grove." In 2016, he scaled to the top of the mountain in the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series. Three years later, he won the USAC Southwest Sprint Car title. Last season, he was crowned "King" in the tough USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. In addition, he also has a California Sprint Week Championship on his resume. After taking Mother's Day weekend off, Roa will be in the #8M the next two weeks. This Saturday, May 18th, will be round #3 of the USCS season at the Bakersfield Speedway. The veteran driver will attempt to win his second straight USCS race at the track and his third consecutive overall. Before his win three weeks ago, he won at his only appearance at the track last year when he outdistanced the field in a USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race. On May 25th, Roa will head to Perris Auto Speedway for one of the USA's longest-running races, the 71st Salute to Indy. Roa won the annual race three years ago in 2021. The initial running of the Salute to Indy, in 1948, was won by four-time Indianapolis 500 starter Dempsey Wilson. Since then, a bevy of open-wheel racing stars, including Roa, have taken home victories in the prestigious race. Spectator gates for Saturday's race on the famous Bakersfield Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). - SEXTON GATLIN RACING APRIL 27th RESULTS - BAKERSFIELD UP NEXT ON MAY 18th
(Lakeside, CA, May 4, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing had a planned couple of weeks off from its 2024 racing schedule on May 4th and May 11th. After two straight tough weeks at the track, the father and son duo of Brent Sexton and his youngest son Grant could use the rest. They will return to action on May 18th when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging makes its second appearance at the Bakersfield Speedway. Last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway things began on the bright side when 19-year-old Grant sizzled in qualifying on the breezy evening with a time of 16.733. That was the seventh fastest of the 22 cars on hand. Brent's 17.658 was the 19th best time of the night. Heat race action matched the family duo together in the first 10-lapper. Grant, 19, was on the outside of the second row in the fourth position. Brent was two rows behind in seventh. When the Chris Fulton checkered flag ended the short race, Grant was sixth and Brent was seventh. That was very costly for Grant as it guaranteed him of not being in the invert for the first three rows of the main event. Grant, who came into the night tied for 15th in the championship standings with Brent, had a better starting spot than his dad in the 30-lap main. He was on the outside of row four. Brent was near the back on the inside of row 10. Grant, the previous season's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was doing well early on and was running in the top 10. However, it all unraveled for him in one fell swoop. In turn four on the 22nd lap, he ended up tangled with three other cars. The four-car incident produced enough damage to knock the teen out of the race with a frustrating 19th-place result. Grant's misfortune left Brent to fly the SGR flag for the remainder of the race. Unfortunately, the 51-year-old did not get much farther. However, his situation was a little more serious. The Tennessee native tangled with another car and flipped in turn four. Fortunately, he climbed out of his car unhurt. However, he had to add more to the list of replacement parts he and Grant will need before May 18th. The finishing order broke the tie between the two in the season-long standings. Brent is now alone in 15th on the data sheet. Grant is a mere five points behind. After the May 18th date at Bakersfield, Sexton Gatlin Racing will be back in action the following week when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars contest one of the nation's longest-running sprint car races, the Annual Salute to Indy, on May 25th. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. - THE FIRST OF THREE MAY RACES FOR EDDIE TAFOYA JR. THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Chino, CA, May 2, 2024) Veteran sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will begin a busy month of racing this Saturday night, May 4th, in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. After taking the Mother's Day weekend off, he will be at the Bakersfield Speedway for the next USCS race on the 18th and at Perris Auto Speedway for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series annual Salute to Indy on the 25th. Tafoya, 26, comes into Saturday's race ranked 10th after the historical first race of the USCS at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks ago. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel #17T at that first race, Tafoya was the ninth fastest of the 30 cars on hand in qualifying. He followed qualifying up with a second-place finish in his heat. In the main, Tafoya, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was moving forward after starting eighth. He marched up to sixth and was streaking toward the top five when mechanical issues forced him to the sidelines with a 22nd place finish. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 mailto:info@kernraceway.com. Last week at Perris, Tafoya contested his 10th race of the 2024 campaign. He was driving the familiar Tafoya family-owned #51T at the track where he captured The PAS Young Gun title in 2018. The personable Chino Hills, California resident came into the night 12th in the series point standings. A lap of 16.873 was the 12th fastest of the night, placing the pretty car with the red chrome trim inside the second row of heat race #3. He pushed the car to a fifth-place finish in the 10-lapper. For the 30-lap main, which turned wild over the last 10 laps with a couple of red flags and numerous yellows, Tafoya started 12th and drove forward to finish ninth. It was his second top 10 in a row in the USAC/CRA Series and was only surpassed by his sixth-place finish at Perris on March 16th. The performance shot Tafoya up to ninth in the championship standings, only 12 points out of eighth heading into the next series race at Perris on Memorial Day Weekend. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. - BRODY ROA GOES FOR TWO USCS WINS IN A ROW SATURDAY AT KERN COUNTY
(Cypress, CA, May 2, 2024) Brody Roa, one of the top traditional sprint car drivers west of the Mississippi, will try to make it two in a row when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway this Saturday, May 4th, for the Dave Calderwood Memorial. Two weeks ago the Garden Grove, California veteran racer won the series inaugural race on the other side of town at the Bakersfield Speedway. Roa made the most of his first appearance in nearly two years in Jayson May's #8M when he outdistanced the field at the first-ever USCS race. In qualifying, "The Pride of Garden Grove," was the fifth fastest of his group and 11th fastest of the 30 cars on hand. He then started on the pole in his 10-lap heat race and scored the win. He again started on the pole for the 30-lap main and emerged victorious again. Combined with a win in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series last June 24th, Roa has victories in his last two appearances on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mil High Banked Clay Oval." Entering this week's race, Roa has a six-point lead in the championship standings in the brand-new series. Last week Roa and May raced together for their first time at Perris Auto Speedway. While they had teamed together at other tracks and May came to Perris once with Chase Johnson, last week was their first time together at The PAS. After a fourth-place finish in his 10-lap heat. Roa started the main event in the 15th spot. One of the keys to the main event ended up being staying out of trouble. While the first 20 laps went relatively smoothly with only one yellow, One of the keys to the race was staying over the last 10 laps was staying out of trouble as there was a pair of red flags and a plethora of yellows. The 2023 USAC/CRA champion managed to avoid the chaos and brought May's colorful #8M home in eighth. So far in three main events in 2024, Roa has one win, two top fives, and three top 10s. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. - DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR SEXTON GATLIN RACING IN THE INAUGURAL USCS RACE AT BAKERSFIELD
(Lakeside, CA, April 26, 2024) The first-ever Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway proved to be a tough one for Sexton Gatlin Racing drivers Brent Sexton and his son Grant as both did not finish the 30-lap main event. On the brighter side, Brent, a two-time California Lightning Sprint Car Series champion, placed sixth in the CLS main. After qualifying concluded, 19-year-old Grant was second fastest in his group and third fastest of the 28 cars who turned in laps on the 1/3 mile track. Brent was matched against Grant in group #1 and was eighth fastest. Being in the same group meant they would also square off in the first heat race of the night. Grant started fourth in the 10-lapper and Brent began in seventh. Grant advanced one spot forward to finish third. That earned him a direct transfer into the A main. Brent finished right where he started and had to take a trip to the B main. The B main ended up being flagged early with Brent in third place. He got a ticket to the 30-lapper but unbeknownst to him at the time, he was not going to get a lot of feature laps in. Early in the going, he slammed the front stretch wall and tore the rear end out of the #44. He was credited with 25th. Grant's fate in the main seemed a lot better. The 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year began the race in 10th but drove forward to the fourth-place spot. In the tight race between the top four, the youngster was all over the second and third-place cars. However, they were mired in heavy-lapped traffic. The odds of trouble with the lappers grew with each passing go around but the laps were dwindling fast. Unfortunately, not fast enough. Going into turn three on lap 28, the second-place car got into a lapper. The third-place car had nowhere to go and plowed into what was quickly turning into a mess. Then the accordion effect swept up Grant and one other car. That tangle proved to be the end of the line for Grant on the night. A top-four finish flew out the window with the crash and he ended up 16th. Not long after the USCS main, Brent started eighth in the 25-lap California Lightning Sprint feature and closed the night with a refreshing sixth-place result. - AFTER A GOOD START, MECHANICAL WOES TOOK A TOLL ON TAFOYA AT BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, April 25, 2026) After a good start in the inaugural Ultimate Sprint Car Series race Presented By Inland Rigging at the Bakersfield Speedway, mechanical ills foiled Eddie Tafoya Jr.'s hopes of victory last Saturday night. This Saturday Tafoya will be at his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for round #5 of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars Series. Tafoya, in the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T, came out in the second of the three qualifying groups and turned in a lap of 13.711. That was good enough for fourth fastest in the group of 10 and the 10th fastest of the 28 cars that recorded qualifying times. Tafoya's time placed him outside the front row for the second heat race in USCS history. The steady driver stayed there for the duration of the 10-lap race. That sounds easier than it was. He had to fend off a couple of determined drivers to hang onto the runnerup spot on "The Fastest 1/3 High Banked Clay Oval In The West." For the main, second-generation racer Tafoya, who spent a lot of time racing with the USAC National Sprint Cars in 2023, came from the outside of row four in the eighth position on the start. It was clear that he had a good car as he advanced one spot forward to seventh before the end of the second go-around. A couple of laps later he was up to sixth and looked to be ready for the top five when he was rocked by mechanical issues and was done for the night. What seemed to be a certain top-five ended up with a frustrating 22nd. Nonetheless, he still comes out of the inaugural event 10th in USCS points. This Saturday night, Tafoya will be back in the family-owned #51T for the USAC/CRA Series event on the track that is nearest to his Chino Hills, California home, Perris Auto Speedway. Tafoya goes into Saturday's race after a season-best USAC/CRA sixth-place finish three weeks ago at the Mohave Valley Raceway. The MVR result advanced him to 12th in the USAC/CRA standings, only 15 points out of 10th. For fans who would like to see Tafoya live in action at Perris, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available at the ticket window. The track is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. After Saturday, Tafoya will have three races in the month of May. The first two will be USCS races starting with the David Calderwood Memorial at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on the fourth. On the 18th, he will be back at the Bakersfield Speedway. He will close the month with the prestigious USAC/CRA Salute to Indy at Perris on the 25th. Affable Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. - BRODY ROA GETS HISTORIC WIN IN ULTIMATE SPRINT CAR SERIES INAUGURAL RACE AT BAKERSFIELD
(Cypress, CA, April 24, 2024) Sprint Car racing veteran Brody Roa scored a historic win when he captured the inaugural Inland Rigging Ultimate Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway. This Saturday, he will be in action in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway. At Bakersfield, Roa was reunited with car owner Jayson May for only the second time since the 2022 Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura. Their first time back together was at the USAC/CRA race at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6. To say things did not go as planned at that event is an understatement. Going into turn three in qualifying, the steering wheel came off and Roa slammed hard into the tractor tires that protect the pit area. Roa was uninjured in the crash, but the car was heavily damaged and he was done for the night. Last Saturday at Bakersfield, things were 180 degrees opposite of Mohave as before winning the main event, Roa led every inch of the way in a stacked 10-lap heat race. However, the team had an issue early on. "To start the night we had an issue with the right rear shock," Roa said. "It had a leak and leaked the nitrogen out of it. That set us back in hot laps and qualifying. So, we had to do some troubleshooting. We really did not get to work on the car setup-wise until the heat race. Luckily, we were good enough right off the bat so it did not take all that much." For the 30-lap main, the Garden Grove, California resident and his restricted 410 #8M started on the pole. After leading the opening lap on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," Roa slipped back to second. As the race progressed, he lost a couple more spots. However, by lap nine he was headed back toward the front. With just seven laps remaining in the race, Roa found himself in a familiar place. The lead!!! From that point on he was never headed and he raced under the Randy Schweitzer checkered flag with a 10-car length cushion between himself and the second-place car. "It was really dicey in traffic," Roa stated about the main event. "I did not think we were the best car in the feature and did not have the sheer speed like Brody Fuson had. He was really good on a clean racetrack, but he broke before we got to the lapped traffic. That traffic, they had the track covered. You really had to be smart in what direction you went. You had to watch way ahead because we were coming up on them pretty fast. With the track, how slick it was, if you missed it you lost a lot of miles an hour. That is the fun stuff. That is what I enjoy doing, the race craft part of it." "After all those years being so good at Bakersfield, we actually won there last year for the first time," Roa laughed remembering a victory in his own #91R. "I think before that we went from one of the first two rows, to crash, to the work area and back to second. Probably five or six times. Hopefully the Bakersfield "Monkey" is off our back." "I was really comfortable," Roa responded when asked how it felt to get back in May's car for the first time since 2022. "It is like we did not skip a beat. We worked really well a couple of years ago when I drove for him. We never stopped talking. It was comforting getting back in his car. I know what kind of car it is and what kind of preparation he does on it. I had no hesitation jumping back in that thing." While Roa started driving May's car about four years ago and has been a Perris regular since he started driving in the USAC/CRA Series, it will be his first time driving for May there. It will only be May's second time at the track. The first time was a couple of years ago when Chase Johnson was steering the #8M for him. Thus far in 2024, Roa, the 2023 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series champion, has only made one start at The PAS. Driving for Arizona car owner Chris Bonneau on March 16th, Roa was on his way to victory late in the race when a flat tire sent him to the work area. He had to restart at the back and with just a few laps to work with, he drove back to fourth. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, we will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. - TOMMY MALCOLM BRINGS USAC/CRA POINT LEAD HOME TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Perris, CA, April 23, 2024) While it seems like just yesterday, it was about 15 years ago that a small teen showed up at the sign up booth to race a street stock at Perris Auto Speedway. The young driver became an immediate hit with the fans at the track. He went on to become a successful late model racer winning main events around the West Coast. A few years ago, he dropped the cars that had roofs on them to race 410 sprint cars. This Saturday night, for the first time in his career, Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm will enter the pits at the track where it all began as the points leader in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The likable driver and his brother Johnny both began their racing careers at Perris. That was natural as their stepfather Dino Napier was one of the top drivers at the track in its early days. Napier captured the championship in the PASSCAR California Champ Truck Series in 2002. The family continued to race at the Riverside County oval until the track dropped the late model class. To continue racing late models, the family team raced up and down the West Coast. After purchasing a sprint car from David Cardey a few years ago, Malcolm paid his dues getting used to the 1200 pound, 900 horsepower open wheel racecar. Never giving up, he came close to victories several times. However, it seems like each time the jaws of defeat would snatch his initial sprint car win away. The most heartbreaking came two years ago at the Bakersfield Speedway. Malcolm was leading the 30-lap main event. During a yellow flag period late in the race, a flat tire sent him to the work area and the back of the pack for the restart. "You would be hard-pressed to find a nicer driver than Tommy," Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said. "He was a nice, respectful teen when he first came to race with us and nothing has changed. He is just as nice today as he was at 15. There is no ego there at all. He lets his driving do the talking and it speaks in volumes." "In the street stocks, he quickly got up to speed and had a big fan following. The same when he jumped up to late models. As soon as he switched to a sprint car, you could tell he was going to be okay. He finally got some wins last season. They were a long time coming and very well deserved. Now he is a contender each time he comes onto the track. He will surely be one of the favorites coming into this Saturday's race." The wait for Malcolm to win his first sprint car race ended at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on May 20th, 2023. The time gap for his second win was not a long one. In fact, he won the prestigious Salute to Indy seven days later at Perris. Malcolm backed those triumphs up with a victory in the Glen Howard Classic at Perris on September 23rd. A third-place finish at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway three weeks ago propelled the Yucaipa, California driver into the 2024 USAC/CRA point lead. Coming into Saturday's race, he has a one-point lead over Santa Barbara, California's David Gasper. Laveen, Arizona's RJ Johnson, Logan Williams of Yorba Linda, California, and Camarillo's Ricky Lewis round out the top five. Amazingly first to fifth is only separated by 20 points. All but Lewis, who spends the regular season in the Midwest, will be on hand this Saturday night. Besides the third-place finish, thus far in 2024, Malcolm, who was married last year, has two sixth-place results and a seventh. So far this season, he has yet to finish in a position worse than where he started in the four USAC/CRA main events to date. On opening night at Perris, he started 14th and finished sixth. At the second race of the year, which was also at Perris, he began in 11th and placed sixth again. In March at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway in a race that was cut short 10 laps early due to rain, he started and finished seventh. In his third-place finish at Mohave, he started in 10th. That one-point lead in the championship standings could be larger if Malcolm had some better luck in qualifying. With the exception of Cocopah where he was fast qualifier, he has timed in at 15th, 16th, and 12th this season. All of which means he has had to start mid-pack and weave his way through the traffic in three of the four races. In addition to Malcolm and the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints, PAS Senior Sprints, and the PASSCAR Super Stocks and American Factory Stocks will also be in action on Saturday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, we will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday.
