- ROOKIE BRENT SEXTON HAS SEASON-BEST USAC/CRA FINISH AT PERRIS - RACING VENTURA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, July 18, 2024) Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car rookie driver Brent Sexton scored his best series finish of the season when he placed ninth in the 30-lap main event last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. This Saturday, Sexton and his 20-year-old son Grant will head to the Ventura Raceway for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, "Surecam Showdown." Flying solo last week as Grant was home ill, Sexton, 52, began the night with a 17.482 lap in qualifying. That was the 14th fastest of the cars on hand. He followed that up with an eighth-place finish in his 10-lap heat. Needless to say, the night was not going the way he had planned. Sexton was slated to start the 30-lap main event in the 13th starting position. Then things began to improve. Before a lap was officially recorded, he moved up a couple of spots due to the extracurricular activities of some of the others in the field before a lap was completed. When things finally got sorted out, Sexton, driving the flashy white and fluorescent orange #22 Triple X Chassis powered by a former Rico Abreu Shaver 360, was very racy and was battling in the top 10. Sexton got hooked up in a great side-by-side duel with Yucca Valley, California veteran Jeff Dyer. The two have raced against each other for years in the lightning sprints and they kept the crowd entertained by racing side by side for nearly ten thrilling laps. In the end, Lakeside, California-based Sexton avoided the chaos and brought the #22 car home ninth. It was his first USAC/CRA top 10 of 2024 and his second-best lifetime series finish. The only better one came on June 10, 2023, when he made his debut in the series at Perris and shocked everyone by coming home sixth. "I think I was up to starting sixth when the race got going," Sexton laughed about last Saturday's main. "There was a lot of attrition, and that helped. Also, staying out of the wrecks helped a lot. I am happy with it. I will take it and get ready for this week's race." "The biggest kick for me was the battle I had with Jeff Dyer," Sexton said. "We raced side by side for a lot of laps. We have raced against each other for years in lightning sprint cars, so it was a lot of fun racing hard with him on Saturday." Unfortunately, Dyer was involved in a serious crash when another car flipped and landed on top of him near the end of the race. The blow knocked Dyer out, and his foot pushed the pedal down. He hit the wall with a Titanic force and then flipped. While he quickly regained consciousness, it took EMTs quite some time to get him out of the car as they were immobilizing an arm he broke in the crash. Sitting in his car, Sexton was worried about his friend. "I was sitting in the car and heard over the radio it was Jeff," Sexton recalled. "It was taking some time to get him out, so it was kind of scary and worrisome wondering what was wrong and why it was taking so long. It was a relief when they said it was an arm injury and they were just being careful getting him out." Sexton is a three-time Lightning Sprint Car Series champion, and he still dabbles with the smaller cars when he does not have a full-size sprint car series race. In fact, he won a SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series race on San Diego County's Barona Speedway on May 25th. However, he has the time of his life in the full-size cars and wishes he had made the jump up a long time ago. "I am having so much fun," Sexton said when asked about driving the larger, more powerful cars. "I wish I would have bitten the bullet and done it before so I could have raced against some of the legends. Guys like David Cardey, Rickie Gaunt, and others." The wily veteran, who is third in the USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year standings, is 13th in the season-long championship points chase after 10 of 23 races. Sexton Will make the transition from the big half-mile at Perris to the 1/5-mile Ventura oval this Saturday. It will be his third race in the USCS. His best finish so far was a 10th at Ventura on June 1st. His other outing in the club came in May at the Bakersfield Speedway. Unfortunately, he left that one early after slapping the turn 4 wall and finishing 20th. He goes into Saturday's dirt track war 22nd in USCS points. Saturday will be Grant's first race since a July 6th affair at the Santa Maria Speedway. That night, he was knocked out of the main event on lap two and finished 20th. He was slated to compete at Perris last week but scratched due to feeling under the weather. In his first three appearances with the USCS, the 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year has a third, a fifth, and a 16th-place finish. He will be in a tie for 15th when he arrives at the beachside oval on Saturday. Spectator gates for Saturday's USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. Adult tickets are $22.00. Seniors 60 and over, military with ID, and students with an ID get in for $18.00. Children 12 and under are free when they are accompanied by an adult. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/, and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GOES FROM THE BACK TO SEVENTH IN PERRIS USAC/CRA RACE - VENTURA THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, July 17, 2024) After an early program set back in hot laps, Eddie Tafoya Jr. had an impressive recovery by going from 15th to seventh to capture the "In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award" at last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. This week, the veteran racer will head to the Ventura Raceway for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series event presented by Inland Rigging. Tafoya, who turned 27 a few days before the race, was coming into the night after an eighth-place finish on the same half-mile clay oval three weeks earlier. Bolstering his effort in the pits on the evening was Zac Bozanich. While Tafoya had worked with Bozanich on the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, it was the first time the award-winning crew chief was helping Tafoya with his family-owned #51T. Unfortunately, things did not get off to a good start in hot laps. Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, had a big vibration in the car. Turns out the rear end of his car was letting go. He quickly returned to the pits where the crew swarmed over the machine to get it back on the track. "The first lap of hot laps, I had a real bad vibration coming out of two," Tafoya lamented. "I pulled her back into the pits and figured out the whole rear plate was cracked, the gears were stripped, and it started throwing the lower shaft out of it. At that point, it was kind of a scramble time to try and get the spare one off the wall. Luckily we got that done before the heat races. It put us behind the eight-ball, but we made the best of it." "I trust all the equipment we have," Tafoya continued when asked if that affected his focus for the remainder of the night. "All of our spares are real good. We didn't know that rear end was a thicker wall tubing. So, our bleeders did not work. I was out of luck on the bleeders for the rest of the night. That kind of sucked." While the team did get it changed for the heat races, they could not do it in time for qualifying. Thus, Tafoya had to start at the back of the eight-car field in the second heat race. He moved forward to finish sixth. Then, the personable driver had to start last in the 16-car, 30-lap main event. That is when things turned around. In a main that had more than its share of chaos, Tafoya, who is seldom involved in any of the mayhem, used his track savvy to avoid getting tangled up in any of the wrecks. "When you are starting back there, you kind of pick your battles," Tafoya stated. "You know when to go and when not to go. Luckily, I could see those pileups coming from a mile away. I did my best to stay out of them, and luckily it worked out." "I felt really good," Tafoya said when asked if he thought he had a car that could have been a contender if he started closer to the front. "When Tommy (eventual winner Tommy Malcolm) went by me, I did not really want to mess with him too much. I felt I was not too far off his pace, and the same with AJ (second-place finisher AJ Bender). I feel if we could have been up there closer to the front on the start we could have fought for a podium position. When the checkers ended the race, Tafoya crawled out of the car in seventh place. It was his sixth top 10 finish in nine USAC/CRA starts in 2024. The result also kept him seventh in the series championship standings heading into a busy month of August that will see races on the 10th at Santa Maria, the 17th at Perris and the 31st at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya enjoyed having Bozanich work on the car in the pit area. In his years working with Brody Roa, Bozanich captured the coveted USAC/CRA Crew Chief of the Year Award one season and was the champion crew chief in 2023. Needless to say, Tafoya would not mind working with him again in the future. "We are definitely on the same page when it comes to setup stuff," Tafoya said. "It is easy to work with someone when you are both thinking the same about the car and are not butting heads. It is definitely easier when you are making decisions. It was the first time he helped on the #51T. I try to get as much help as I can whenever I can. So, hopefully, it works out a few more times this year and he can be with us." This Saturday, Tafoya will make the 100-mile track to the Ventura Raceway, which is located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, to drive his own #51T car. At the first USCS race at the track on June 1st, he led the field into turn one after the green flag. However, his steering broke, and he slammed into the turn-one wall and tipped over. That left him with a 23rd-place finish. While the June 1st race result at Ventura was not to his liking, Tafoya has done well at the track in the past in USAC/CRA competition. His best showing at Ventura came in May 2022, when he set the fastest qualifying time and finished fifth in the main event. "I feel good," the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year responded when asked about this week's race at the beach. "The time before we ran good, and at Turkey Night (last November) we were winning heat races and qualifiers. So, I definitely feel good going back there on Saturday." Tafoya's best finish in the first four races with the USCS was a second at Santa Maria on June 15th. He enters Saturday's fray fifth in series points. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - JEFF DYER IS AWAITING SURGERY AFTER A CRASH IN SATURDAY'S USAC/CRA MAIN EVENT AT PERRIS
(Yucca Valley, CA, July 14, 2024) Veteran Southern California sprint car driver Jeff Dyer is currently in the hospital waiting for surgery after a crash in Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. The popular driver suffered a broken right humorous bone in the grinding pile-up that occurred on lap 25 of the main event. In addition to the broken bone, he also suffered a concussion and will be confined to the hospital for a week. The incident happened when another driver's steering box malfunctioned, and his car pounded the turn one crash wall. When he came off the wall, the driver began to flip down the track. Dyer, with nowhere to go, got clobbered by the flipping car, and they hit cage to cage. "I just saw him jumping the cushion in turn one," Dyer said from his bed at the Riverside University Hospital. "I tried to turn down, but he started to flip. I do not remember anything after that. When I hit him, we hit cage to cage. Our cage got pushed in pretty good. We think that is when I broke my arm as my seat got hit really hard. When that happened, it knocked me out and it knocked the wind out of me. We think my foot stayed on the throttle." What happened next was something Dyer is probably glad he cannot remember. His 900-horsepower car blasted head-on into the turn-two crash wall and then into one of the track's sponsor billboards before tumbling back down to earth. Safety crews were on the scene in a flash, and he quickly regained consciousness. He remembers the safety crew telling him to "shut the fuel off." At that point, he did not realize he was hurt until he tried to get out of the car, and his "arm was not working." He then remained in the car for quite some time as the EMTs wanted to ensure his arm was stabilized before they removed him for the trip to the hospital. "I did not even know that happened until someone told me," he said when reminded he clobbered the crashwall and the billboard. "I just thought I hit Logan and came to a stop. I did not know all of that other $#@? happened until afterward." Dyer, a Yucca Valley, California resident, is resting kind of uncomfortably as he waits for Monday's surgery. "I am pretty sore," he said. "Of course my arm hurts really bad. It was a clean break all the way through. So they are going to put some rods and pins in it and put me back together like Humpty Dumpty." Another injury in the crash is the car. Dyer's teenage racing son Seth reported that he thinks the car is junk. However, the engine is fine, as it did not get over-revved in the crash. There has been a big outpouring of best wishes and prayers for Dyer on the Internet, and he appreciates that. "That is really cool, man," he said from the hospital. "I appreciate that and thank them very much. I heard a lot of people came down to the pit afterward and helped everyone load everything up. So, that was pretty cool, too. Thanks to those people as well." While his arm is broken and needs fixing, one thing that has remained intact is Dyer's tremendous sense of humor. "I am glad I could make the 9.8 scale," he laughed when told that's what judges would have scored the crash. "That is nice. As long as I entertained, that is what we are there to do." In 2024, the following marketing partners will help keep the Dyers on track. Dependable Machine Inc., Haircuts By Susie, Jobu Racing, LBA Investigations, Straight Time Stirrups, Justice Brothers, Fonseca Racing, Specialty Fasteners, and Blud Racing Lubricants. If you would like to be a part of Dyer Motorsports in 2024, call (760) 550-7237 or send an email to mailto:dyermotorsports4@gmail.com. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING READY FOR PERRIS AFTER ROUGH NIGHT AT SANTA MARIA
(Lakeside, CA, July 11, 2024) After getting hit by what seemed like everything but the track ambulance at Santa Maria, Sexton Gatlin Racing drivers Brent Sexton and his son Grant have dusted themselves off, repaired their damaged cars, and are ready for Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. Gates at the famous Riverside County half-mile oval will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first exciting race will take the green flag at 7:00. The Sexton Gatlin Racing rig made the nearly 300-mile trip north to Santa Maria with three cars inside. One each for Brent and Grant to race in the USAC/CRA Series and a lightning sprint for Lakeside, California flat track motorcycle racer Braydin Collie to use in the companion California Lightning Sprint Car Series race. Brent and Grant were matched up against 24 other top-of-the-line USAC/CRA cars. 2023 Rookie of the Year Grant recorded the best lap of the duo when he shot around the banked 1/3 mile oval in 14.140. That was good enough for the 14th best time of the night. Brent, a 52-year-old who is running for Rookie of the Year this season, stopped the clocks at 14.907 in his ex-Rico Abreu 360. That placed him 19th fastest of the 26. The top five finishers in each 10-lap heat went straight to the 30-lap main event. Drivers finishing sixth on back would have to run the B main. Brent steered the #44 to a seventh-place finish in his heat, meaning he would have extra work in front of him to try and get to the main. Grant, who will turn 20 on Tuesday, fared better when he finished fifth and booked his ticket for the 30-lapper. Brent, who was born in Tennessee, had his work cut out for him in the B main. The three-time lightning sprint car champion was lined up against nine other drivers. The first seven finishers would make it into the A main. In baseball vernacular, the drivers finishing eighth through 10th would hit the showers. The veteran performed well and finished third. That allowed him to join Grant in the A main. Unfortunately, things unraveled in a hurry in the A for both drivers. Grant started 14th, and Brent began in 18th. The chaos started at the beginning of the A main when a car got sideways at the start, leaving Brent nowhere to go. The veteran tipped over. The result was the left rear rim was bent into the bleeder valve. Initially, the crew could not get the wheel nut off until they used a jack to split the wheel apart. Amazingly, they finally got the job done and changed the left rear shock as well, and he was ready for the restart. Coming off his series-best sixth-place finish at Perris a couple of weeks earlier, Grant got caught up in someone else's mess on lap two and flipped. The car suffered costly damage, including a broken Jacob's ladder, exhaust, shocks, and right rear wheel. His #22 was too damaged to continue, and he ended his race with a very frustrating 20th-place finish. With Grant out, SGR fans focused on Brent, who raced for the duration of the 30-lap event and finished 15th. Coming into Saturday's sixth series race of 2024 at Perris, Grant is tied for 14th in the championship standings. One spot and six points behind his youngest offspring is Brent. Collie made his lightning sprint car debut in the fast Sexton Gatlin Racing #44, normally steered by Brent. To say it was an impressive debut is a vast understatement. Being his first time in a lightning sprint, it was no surprise that the flat tracker qualified last in the 14-car field. After all, he had never raced a lightning sprint prior. He also placed last in his heat. However, in the main event, he nearly captured the "Hard Charger" award, going from the 13th starting spot to finish sixth. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1366778 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY WITH THE USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS AT PERRIS
(Chino, CA, July 11, 2024) After a two-week break in his busy racing schedule, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will be back in the gorgeous, family-owned #51T for this weekend's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. The track's 2018 Young Gun Sprint Car Series champion will enter the battleground eighth in USAC/CRA points. The Chino Hills, California resident, who turned 27 on Wednesday, comes into Saturday's Perris race after a busy month of June that saw him compete seven times. Four of the races were in his native California, and three were in Indiana, a hotbed of open-wheel racing. One other race that he was in the "Hoosier State" for was rained out. The likable driver's best June result came in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging main event at the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th when he placed second. That event was sandwiched in between USAC/CRA races at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on June 8th and Perris on the 22nd. He placed fourth at Kern and came from the back to finish eighth at Perris. Earlier in the month of June, Tafoya finished 23rd when something broke in his steering while leading the field into turn one at the USCS race at Ventura on the 1st. He then jetted to Indiana and finished eighth in the A main at the Lawrenceburg Speedway on the fifth and 12th at the Lincoln Park Speedway 24 hours later. He wrapped up his Indiana journey with a sixth-place finish in the B main at Bloomington on the seventh before flying back to California for the Kern race 24 hours later. Unlike June, when Tafoya originally had eight race dates on his schedule, there are only two scheduled thus far in July. The first is this Saturday's USAC/CRA affair at Perris. He will follow that up when the USCS returns to Ventura on the 20th. If you are coming to Saturday's race, be sure to stop by Eddie's pit and wish him a belated Happy Birthday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. at Perris on Saturday, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. - JEFF DYER GETS HIS FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR AT THE SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY
(Yucca Valley, CA, June 27, 2024) Jeff Dyer finally shook the giant gorilla off his back and won his first main event of the season by dominating last Saturday night's California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event at the Santa Maria Speedway. Dyer's 17-year-old son Seth ended up 12th in the same main event after being knocked out by a broken injector wire. In the companion Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Doug Fort Memorial 30-lap main event, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff got beaten around like a pinata but still came home 14th. Sporting new Power Performance Protection Engines, things started out well enough for the Dyer Motorsports duo in qualifying with the CLS. Jeff was the second quickest of the fourteen cars on hand at 14.314. Seth's best time was 14.782. That ended up being the sixth fastest of the night. On Saturday, Seth was the first member of the Yucca Valley, California-based team to contest a race at the 60-year-old track. The teen started on the front and finished third in the first heat. Moments later, the patriarch of the family, Jeff, took to the track. He started on the outside of the front row and advanced forward to finish second. Jeff, who has a Santa Maria winner's trophy from 2019 sitting on his mantle, started on the outside of the front row and stormed into the lead at the start of the main event. Even at that early point in the race, it was evident that he was far faster than all the other cars as he quickly pulled away from the competition. Seth, who came into the night 4th in the championship point standings, was coming from the inside of the second row in the 25-lapper. The talented teen ran in the top five the whole time he was on the track. However, that time ended 17 laps before the checkered flag ended the race. That is when the injector wire broke and saddled in with a frustrating 12th-place finish. Out front, Jeff's only worries came in the form of two yellow flags during the race. However, those worries turned out to be minor because the two times the green flag came back out, he simply motored away from the pack. At the end of the 25th and final lap, he had a full straightaway advantage over his closest pursuer. "We have had our struggles this year," the happy CHP officer told the large enthusiastic crowd after his win. "We have been super-fast. It is the first year we have had where we keep blowing engines. We haven't changed anything. It held together tonight. The track was technical and heavy. I have always had a little trouble freeing my cars up to run the top. They do not really run too good in the heavy stuff. It was kind of slick down below and that is what it stayed at. When you are leading, you never move from what you are doing until they try to pass you. I knew that if I was fast enough they were going to have to wind them up." Dyer's performance in the Cal Sun Racing/Dyer Motorsports #39 in the USAC/CRA portion of the program, got off to a good start when he qualified 10th fastest in the 26-car field. A fourth-place finish in his 10-lap heat race gave him one of the five direct transfers to the main event. The veteran started the main in the 10th spot. With the car working as well, a top-10 finish was certainly in the offing for the night. Unfortunately, he got clobbered. The incident cracked the housing on his rear end, bent a shock, flattened the left rear tire, and bent the steering wheel (another car's tire entered the cockpit and tagged the steering wheel). Despite the damage, his crew got the car back on the track for the restart, and he finished the race in 14th place. Seth will return to action with his dad when the California Lightning Sprint Cars return to the Santa Maria Speedway on July 27th for round #2 of the CLS/BCRA Civil War Series. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING TAKING THREE CARS TO SANTA MARIA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, July 4, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing will return to action this Saturday night with a three-car effort at the Santa Maria Speedway. Headlining the team will be Grant Sexton and his father, Brent, who will be competing in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Flat-track motorcycle racer Braydin Collie will join them, driving the SGR #44 in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series portion of the exciting program. Grant comes into the night off his season-best USAC/CRA sixth-place finish on May 27th. He also won the Hard Charger on the same night, going from 16th on the start to finishing sixth. In the same race, Brent, 52, picked up five spots in the main, going from 18th to 13th. Going into Saturday's show at Santa Maria, Grant is 16th in points, and Brent is one spot and 14 points behind his youngest offspring. Sexton Gatlin Racing has appeared at Santa Maria numerous times over the past couple of decades. The last time was on August 6, 2022. On that night, Brent captured the California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event. SGR bookended that main event when Brent's oldest son, Dalton, subbed for Grant in the race. The older sibling pulled off the track after one lap and finished 15th. On the same night, Grant, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on July 16th, was making his second-ever start in the USAC/CRA Series. Flashing some of the talent that would take him to the 2023 Rookie of the Year, he impressively qualified 15th in the 31-car field. In his 10-lap heat race, he missed the transfer to the A main by two positions. That sent him to the B main where he was the show. On the opening circuit of the 12-lapper, he touched wheels with another car and bicycled towards the wall in turn three. He did not let up and gathered it back in. A few laps later, he was trying to pass the fifth-place car on the outside on the back chute. The car suddenly bolted right, clipped Grant, and sent him into the fence. Yet, the teen maintained his poise and did not lose a spot. However, running in the final transfer spot going into turn one on the last lap, he hit a big rut and spun out, ending a crowd-pleasing performance and his night of racing. Joining Sexton Gatlin Motorsports at Santa Maria will be Lakeside, California's Braydin Collie. The flat-track motorcycle racer will make his California Lightning Sprint Car Series debut on the 1/3-mile banked clay oval. For fans who want to see SGR in action on Saturday, the gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will start at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. STARTS THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS OF RACING SATURDAY NIGHT AT SANTA MARIA
(Chino, CA, July 4, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. begins three straight Saturday nights of racing when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its first of three 2024 appearances at the newly rejuvenated Santa Maria Speedway this Saturday, July 6th. One week later, on July 13th, he will contest the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway and will close the month when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, visits the Ventura Raceway on July 20th. Tafoya, who will turn 27 next Wednesday, will be making his 21st start of the season on Saturday. As of late, the friendly racer has been steadily climbing higher on the USAC/CRA Series championship point ladder. The Chino Hills, California resident enters Saturday's fray on the 1/3 mile banked clay oval eighth in the standings. He is a mere 10 points out of seventh and less than 90 points behind the third-place driver. Advancing so high in the standings comes after a wild start to the season when he seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the first three USAC/CRA races of the year, Tafoya finished 21st, 16th and 12th. The main event finishing average of those three races was 16.33. In the last five races, he has a fourth, a sixth, two eight-place results, and a ninth. His average finish in the last five is 7.00. His overall average for all eight USAC/CRA races this year is 10.37. The average for the last five races and for all eight races on the schedule would more than likely have been lower had the last series race on June 22nd not been stopped 10 laps early. Series officials red-flagged the event due to dusty conditions. In that race, Tafoya had to restart at the back after a tangle on lap 16. In just four laps, he raced all the way up to eighth. Had the race run its 30-lap duration; in all likelihood, he would have passed more cars. In going to Santa Maria on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the site of his best finish of the year. On June 15th, he placed second in the USCS main event at the 60-year-old facility. In addition to it being his best finish of the year, it was also his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. The result came at the first race at the track since 2022. The surface that night was a tire eater. However, this will be the track's second race since then, and teams are looking for improved track conditions on Saturday. The gates for Saturday's race at Santa Maria will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00, and the first race will start at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. COMES FROM THE BACK TO FINISH EIGHTH IN SHORTENED PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY MAIN
(Chino, CA, June 27, 2024) In what can best be described as a bizarre night, Eddie Tafoya Jr. came from the back of the pack to finish eighth in last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. The race was called complete at the end of 20 laps leaving fans to wonder where he would have finished if it had gone the full 30-circuits. Tafoya, who was racing at the track closest to his Chino Hills, California home, was the 10th fastest car of the 22 on hand in qualifying. The quickest of his two laps on the clocks was a 17.848. The time sent the affable racer to the first heat race on the hot evening. Starting on the inside of row two in the 10-lapper, he placed fifth. During the afternoon, the thermometer was registering at over 100 degrees at the 28 year old track. In addition, the wind was blowing. By the time the eighth series 30-lap main event of 2024 was ready to push off, the wind was still blowing, and the temperature was 80 degrees. When the 22-car field of 900+ horsepower cars began the race, a problem that rarely exists at the track reared its ugly head. That problem was copious amounts of dust. Early on, veteran racer Tafoya, who started the main event in 10th, got caught up in somebody else's mess. After a quick trip to the work area, he returned to the battleground but had to restart the race at the back. While the dust had settled during the yellow flag period, it came up again as soon as the race resumed. Despite issues seeing, Tafoya managed to steer the car, which is a fan favorite with its red foil trim, forward. He was one of the few cars making passes, and he found himself impressively back up to eighth spot. However, that was as far as he was going to get. As conditions were not improving, series officials called the race complete at 20-laps. While it would have been interesting to see where 26-year-old Tafoya would have finished had the race not been shortened, it was an impressive performance in less-than-ideal conditions. It also gave him six top 10 finishes in the last 10 Southern California A mains he has started. Included in the top 10s is a second place at the grand reopening of the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th. Saturday's finish saw Tafoya close to within 10-points of the driver currently ranked seventh in the championship standings. With more than half the season remaining, the 2019 series Rookie of the Year will surely rise higher in the point battle before the season ends. Tafoya gets this weekend off, but he will be back at it on July 5th when the USAC/CRA Series heads to Santa Maria for the first time since 2022. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. - FRESH OFF VACATION, GRANT SEXTON GETS SEASON-BEST USAC/CRA SIXTH-PLACE FINISH AT PERRIS
(Lakeside, CA, June 28, 2024) Fresh off a nice vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Grant Sexton recorded his best Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series finish of the season when he placed sixth last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. The performance also earned the teen the Jeff and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award. In addition, his father Brent, who had been on vacation at the river, tied his season-best series finish when he placed 13th in the same race. Grant, who will turn 20 on July 16th, qualified 16th on the hot night with a time of 18.360. Brent, a three-time lightning sprint car champion who is contesting his rookie season in USAC/CRA, timed in 19th best at 18.698. The father-son team competed in the same 10-lap heat race. Grant finished 6th, with his father one spot back in seventh. At the track that is located 75 miles east of Los Angeles and 75 miles north of San Diego, the temperature was over 100 degrees in the afternoon, and the wind was blowing. By the time the main event rolled around, the wind was still blowing, and the temperature was 80 degrees. Before the race started, the PAS crew worked the corners of the famous track. However, Mother Nature's wrath prevailed, and the track became dusty early on. Despite those conditions, Grant steered his brilliant white and hot pink Triple X Chassis #22 forward in the race. He was still moving forward on lap 20 when series officials red-flagged the event and deemed the race over. It ended with Grant in sixth. It was definitely the right call, but one has to wonder if he could have continued passing cars if the race had seen out its duration. For Grant, last year's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, it was a relief to get his first top-10 series finish of the season. He moved up to 16th in the championship standings heading into the July 5 race at Santa Maria. Brent, who is contesting his first full season in the series, is one position behind in 17th. Joining Sexton Gatlin Motorsports at Santa Maria will be Lakeside, California's Braydin Collie. The flat rrack motorcycle racer will make his California Lightning Sprint Car Series debut on the 1/3-mile banked clay oval. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - DYER MOTORSPORTS BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY AND PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY RESULTS
(Yucca Valley, CA, June 27, 2024) After a tough weekend in the California Lightning Spring Car Series race at the Bakersfield Speedway, Jeff Dyer headed to Perris Auto Speedway for last Saturday night's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race. However, his night ended under a strange circumstance. Dyer and his son Seth will have this weekend off before returning to action on July 6th at the newly reopened Santa Maria Speedway. The prior week at Bakersfield, Jeff was in a strange ride. After he detonated an engine in the #4 car at Ventura, six-time series champion Bobby Michnowicz loaned him his backup car for the race at the "Okie Bowl." Seth, 17, was in his familiar #4JR. The teen, who presently owns family bragging rights in CLS, came into the event fourth in points. He was the seventh-fastest qualifier on the night with a lap of 15.937. Jeff, who was having some issues with his loner ride, timed in at 15.971. For the second weekend in a row, Seth won his heat race. Jeff was matched against his youngest offspring in the same race, and placed third, directly behind his car owner, Michnowicz. When the field rolled onto the racetrack for the main event at Bakersfield, Seth was on the pole for the second straight time. Due to his time in qualifying, Jeff started ninth. Seth sailed into the lead at the onset and set a blistering pace. Meanwhile, behind him, Jeff began putting on a show. Slicing and dicing his way from the back, he was in the top five on lap two. However, his night would come to a screeching halt on the third circuit when his engine, which was running too lean, slowed drastically, and he pulled into the infield. That saddled the California Highway Patrol officer with a frustrating 10th-place finish. With Jeff on the sidelines for the duration, it was up to Seth to fly the family flag. He did just that. Like his win at the Imperial Raceway last October, he simply ran away from the field. By the end of the fifth lap, he had about a 1/3 straightaway advantage over the second-place car. However, the runner-up started inching closer to him on lap seven. Going into turn one on the 10th circuit, Seth's car slowed dramatically and he coasted to a stop due to his engine dropping a valve. Instead of potentially bagging his initial win of the year, he ended up finishing ninth. Last Saturday at Perris, Jeff was running his 410 car in the USAC/CRA Series. Things did not start out the way he wanted when his car jumped out of gear on his first qualifying lap, and he pulled into the pits. By the time he rolled back into staging, three cars were ahead of him. He would have gotten both of his laps immediately if it had only been two. Thus, he was only given one lap. Driving with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding the car in gear, he ended up 21st with a time of 18.596 . Despite his qualifying time, Jeff placed fourth in his heat race and started 20th in the main. That is when the night unraveled. The temperature at the track in the afternoon was over 100 degrees, and the wind was blowing. The wind kept on blowing until after the main started, and the temperature was still in the low 80s. Conditions ended up being very dusty. While his car was good, as evidenced in his heat race and at the start of the main, Jeff decided to pull in after[i] 14 laps due to the conditions. He ended up finishing 19th. Dyer Motorsports gets this Saturday off but will return to action on July 6th at the Santa Maria Speedway. The show will include both the USAC/CRA Series and the California Lightning Sprints. Jeff will be racing the 410 with USAC/CRA for sure. He is confident that both of the lightning sprint car engines will be repaired and ready to go for the show. If only one is ready, it will go in Seth's car, as he is still ranked fourth in CLS points. The father-son duo from Yucca Valley, California last appeared at Santa Maria with the CLS on August 6th, 2022. Jeff finished 13th in the main, and Seth was one spot behind in 14th. Jeff's last appearance at the track with USAC/CRA was on July 3rd, 2021, and he placed 13th. In 2024, the following marketing partners will help keep the Dyers on track. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GETS SEASON-BEST 2ND PLACE FINISH LAST SATURDAY - ON TO PERRIS THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, June 19, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. notched his best finish of the 2024 season when he placed second last Saturday night in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series main event presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. The result gave the veteran racer six top-10 finishes in his last nine Southern California starts. This Saturday night, Tafoya will take his driving talents to Perris Auto Speedway for the next round of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Last Saturday's well-attended race was the grand reopening of the famous Santa Maria Speedway, which began operation in 1964. Since 2021, the track only hosted one race and that was in August of 2022. Needless to say, the race was highly anticipated by the fans and all the racers, including Chino Hills, California-based Tafoya. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T sprint car; he qualified second fastest in his group on a track surface that proved to be a tire eater, with a 14.434. That was good for the seventh best of the 25 cars on hand. In the main, the soon-to-be 27-year-old started in the ninth position. The track was still tough on tires and to succeed, drivers were going to have to manage them. Tafoya did just that. By the time the race ended, he had his best finish of 2024 and his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. "You had to make sure, especially in the second half of the race, that you were not blowing off the tires," Tafoya said. "You had to stay patient. I kind of waited for things to come my way and took my opportunities when I had to. It's good to finally have a night where everything goes our way and to put a good run in the books." "The track was pretty tough," Tafoya continued. "It started taking rubber early in the night. A couple times they reworked it but it seemed to go back to what it was pretty quick. Our setup was kind of staying the same all night. We were just watching the track. We were quick in qualifying and that helped us out in the heat race. In the main event, we stayed patient, saved our tires, and passed a lot of cars." Tafoya will return to Santa Maria with the USAC/CRA Series on July 5th and 6th. One of the differences those two nights will be Tafoya driving his family owned #51T. "Definitely driving two of the same chassis (DRC), no matter what motor I am running, helps out a lot," Tafoya said about set up for the next race at the track. "So, it has been pretty simple lately." This Saturday, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year is focusing on qualifying. It has not been where he would like it, and he is set on improving. In the four races of Perris this year, he has qualified 10th, 14th, 12th, and 8th. That can be a big hindrance with other cars starting in front of him in the main events. "I just really, really need to focus on qualifying," he said. "That really hurts me later in the night. For me, it is almost trying to drive too hard. Trying to get a good lap time. Maybe for me, tone it down a little bit on Saturday night. Just need everything right, hit everything smooth, and make sure I am carrying my speed." In points chases, Tafoya's second place finish last Saturday saw him jump from eight to fifth in the USCS standings. Tafoya will enter the fray eighth in the standings this Saturday at Perris. He is only 12 points out of seventh and only 65 out of fourth. For fans who want to see the talented Tafoya in action on Saturday, spectator gates at Perris Auto Speedway will open at 5:00 PM in the first race will be at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at the following website or by calling one eight hundred 595-4849. For fans who do not wish to buy tickets in advance, plenty of tickets will be available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the city of Perris. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
Brent is returning to action after working on his tan at the river. Grant spent his vacation In Puerto Vallarta. Despite missing the last two USAC/CRA races, both drivers are still ranked in the top 20 in points. Brent, a three-time lightning sprint car champion who is a rookie in the best traditional sprint car series west of the Mississippi, is currently 17th in the series championship standings. Grant, who captured the 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award, is 20th. Saturday will be the fourth appearance of the season for the beautiful Sexton Gatlin Racing #22 and #44 cars on the banked half-mile clay oval in Riverside County. Both drivers are hoping for better results than they achieved in the first three outings. For Brent, a 52-year-old who first raced at Perris over a quarter of a century ago, he has finished 13th, 15th, and 16th at the track this year. Grant, who will turn 20 in less than a month, has an 18th, 19th, and 21st. Brent's 13th at Perris was his best outing in the series in 2024. Grant's best USAC/CRA finish thus far in 2024 was an 11th at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6th. During his 2023 Rookie of the Year campaign, Grant had five top-10 finishes and one top-5. His best finish was fifth at Bakersfield Speedway on June 24th. In seven appearances at Perris last season, he had two top-10 results. The first of the two was in the prestigious Salute to Indy on Memorial Day weekend. He closed his Perris Auto Speedway season on November 11th when he finished eighth. Between the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints and PAS Senior Sprints, Brent started eight main events at Perris in 2023. His biggest successes came in the POWRi Series where he won April 15, placed second on May 27th, and sixth on November 11th. On June 10th of last year, he drove in both the USAC/CRA Series and the Seniors. He placed seventh in a shocking first appearance in the "Big Boy" USAC/CRA main. That came moments after he finished second in the Senior main. Spectator gates at Perris will open at 5:00 p.m., and racing will follow at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. - BUSY RACER EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADS TO SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, June 13, 2024) Coming after his busiest week of the 2024 season, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will return to action this Saturday night, June 15th, with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. It will be the first race at the track in nearly two years. At the track's last race on August 6th, 2022, Tafoya finished eighth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA main event. Tafoya, who calls Chino Hills, California home, got off to an inauspicious start to the 2024 campaign. It was not of his own doing, he just seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Finally, his fortune has changed. He enters this Saturday's event coming off his most impressive race of the year when he came from seventh on the start to place fourth in the main last Saturday in the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. The exciting result came after he qualified fourth fastest and placed seventh in his heat. The inspiring night at Kern saw Tafoya record his fourth straight USAC/CRA Series top-10 finish. It also allowed him to climb higher in the championship point standings. He is now ranked eighth and is only 52 points out of fifth. "Yeah, for sure, we just have to keep doing what we are doing," Tafoya said after his best finish of 2024. "We have to make sure we can do everything on our part. A lot of the stuff that has been going on this year has been out of our hands. We cannot get down on ourselves. We have just got to keep plugging and keep trying. Things have been going better, and I think we are definitely headed in the right direction." "It is definitely a lot of work to show up and only get three laps in like we have at a lot of races this year," the friendly driver said when asked about the frustration of being taken out at races. "Like I said, we just have to keep plugging away and keep trying. Last weekend, we were really close. It gets the juices back flowing." Tafoya is also eighth in the USCS standings going into this week's historic, grand re-opening race at Santa Maria. Besides his eighth-place result two years ago. His other post-Covid finish at the track was a sixth on July 3rd, 2021. "I really have no idea," Tafoya commented on what he expected Saturday's track to be like. "We have been away from there for so long. Usually, that track is pretty unpredictable in the first place. We will have to see when we get there, I guess. I really do not have a lot of experience there. So, it is hard for me to really like it or dislike it. I am just happy to go racing anywhere." After racing at Bloomington, Indiana, on the seventh, Tafoya had to fly back to So Cal in the morning to race last Saturday at Kern. He was in the "Hoosier State" to contest four nights of sprint car racing on the same card as USAC's Indiana Midget Week. Unfortunately, the first race at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis was rained out on June 4th. Twenty-four hours later, on Wednesday the 5th, Tafoya and the team journeyed south to the Lawrenceburg Speedway. On a track that had been reconfigured since he was last there, Tafoya set the fastest lap in qualifying at 14.632. Later that night, he started 12th in the main event and drove forward to finish eighth. On Thursday, June 6th, Tafoya headed to the Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Indiana. A seventh-place finish in his heat saw him relegated to the B Main, where he started fifth and ended up second. That secured his ticket into the A Main event, where he started 19th and moved all the way up to the 12th place spot before the Checkers ended the race. At his last race in the Midwest, the 26-year-old placed eighth in his heat at Bloomington. That again saw him head to the B Main. He started 15th and passed 9 cars in just 12 laps to finish 6th. However, that left him just shy of a transfer to the A Main before heading to the airport. The gates for Saturday's grand reopening of Santa Maria Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will be at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. - GRANT SEXTON TAKES SEVENTH IN USCS MAIN AT THE VENTURA RACEWAY, FATHER BRENT 14TH
(Lakeside, CA, June 7, 2024) After a slow start to the 2024 racing season, young Grant Sexton has been warming up like the spring weather. Last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway, the teen placed seventh in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, 30-lap main event. That gave him three top-10 finishes, including two top-five, in his last three starts. His teammate and father Brent, who was debuting a brand new car, finished 14th in the 30-lapper. The father-and-son Sexton Gatlin Racing team made the 195-mile journey from its Lakeside, California headquarters to the 1/5-mile track located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. It was Grant's first appearance at the track since last Thanksgiving and Brent's first competitive laps at the facility since a ninth-place finish in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series feature on October 26, 2019. Brent began the night by starting second and finishing fourth in his heat in the new AAA Chassis. One race later, Grant entered the battle zone for heat race #3. He began in second and scored a convincing win in the eight-lapper. Of the two, Grant had the choice starting position for the main, coming from the outside of the front row. Brent started midpack on the wide side of row six. Grant was second on the start, but a bobble in turn four on the first lap cost him dearly. He slipped all the way back to the fifth spot. Soon thereafter, a red flag waved due to a car getting into the wall and tipping over. In his best move of the night, Grant went to the inside and went from fifth to third in one corner on the first lap after the restart. In what was turning into a wild beginning, in the same spot where he passed two cars, Grant got sideways and was clobbered by another driver. The other racer stopped bringing out a yellow, and Grant dropped three spots to sixth. When the race restarted, Grant quickly worked his way up to fourth. Not too far behind, his father had skillfully worked his way to eighth. Several times, Grant challenged the third-place racer, but in the closing laps, he slipped back to seventh, where he was when the checkered flag ended the race. Brent also dropped in the closing laps and crossed the line in 14th. According to Brent on Wednesday, racing is a no-go for this week for Grant, who is vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Earlier in the week Brent was undecided if he would head to the Barona Speedway for the SoCal Lightning Series race. Two weeks ago, the 52-year-old outdistanced the SCLS field on the same San Diego oval for his first win of the 2024 season. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE WAS SPRINT CAR CHALLENGE TOUR HARD CHARGER AT PLACERVILLE
(El Cajon, CA, June 5, 2024) One of the sure things in West Coast Sprint Car racing is the fact that teenage sensation Braden Chiaramonte is not afraid to pass cars. Last Friday, at the Dave Bradway Jr Memorial opening night at the Placerville Speedway, the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour rookie demonstrated that by passing more cars in the main event than any other driver. Stuck back in 21st to start the 35-lap main, he raced under the checkered flag in 13th place. This Saturday night, he makes his first appearance at the Petaluma Speedway when the SCCT visits town. A stout 40-car field converged on the famous high-banked red clay quarter-mile oval for round five of the 2024 SCCT season. For El Cajon, California-based Chiaramonte, the series rookie point leader, who was wheeling the Tiner/Hirst Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH, it was his second showing at the track this year. The first appearance came three weeks earlier when he placed second in the regular Placerville 360 main event. That finish came just 24 hours after a third-place finish at another iconic California track, the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Chiaramonte qualified with 19 other cars in group A. His best lap, an 11.142, was 13th in the group and 25th fastest of the 40 winged cars on hand. That placed him on the inside of the fourth row of the first 10-lap heat race on the freshly watered track. He needed to place in the top five to earn a ticket directly to the A main. However, passing was at a premium at that time of the night. Only four cars, including Chiaramonte, advanced their position in the race, and all of them only moved up one spot. His sixth place finish left him one position shy of going straight into the main. Starting third in the B main, Chiaramonte initially was running fourth. Staying dedicated to the high side of the 59-year-old track, he started flying on lap four and began picking off cars. Eventually getting up to second, he was dramatically closing on the leader who had a full straightaway advantage at one point. Coming off turn four with two laps to go, a lapped car spun to a stop directly in front of the young driver. With cat-like reflexes, Chiaramonte hit the brakes and steered to the inside. His car gained traction, the front wheels shot into the air, and he wheelied past the stopped car in spectacular fashion. With three laps to go, Chiaramonte restarted the B main in second. Going into turn three, he used a textbook slide job to take the lead and impressively led the final three laps, earning himself a ticket into the A main. To say Chiaramonte was starting deep in the main event field was an understatement. He was on the inside of the next to last row for the 35-lapper! Early on, he momentarily slipped back to 23rd. The young driver skillfully avoided the chaos that saw yellow and red flags in the main and methodically moved his way forward. By races end, his impressive performance saw him go all the way forward to 13th. While he officially passed eight cars as the PitStopUSA.com Hard Charger, being back to 23rd at one point means he raced past 10 other cars. The finish kept Chiaramonte in the sixth position in the SCCT championship chase heading into this week's race at the Petaluma. Keeping up with the team's crazy schedule, Chiaramonte hopped on a flight home to El Cajon early Saturday morning. As soon as he got home, the team jumped into the rig with the family-owned #73B and drove 195 miles to the Ultimate Sprint Car Race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway. Unfortunately, the long trek to Ventura did not have a happy ending. After starting and finishing third in his heat, Chiaramonte started 10th in the main event. However, entering the first corner on lap two, something broke, and he went hard into the crash wall. While the young driver was uninjured, the car sustained substantial damage, and he was out for the night. Fans who wish to see Chiaramonte in action at Petaluma on Saturday can find the track on the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds at 100 Fairgrounds Drive in Petaluma. Spectator gates open at 4:00 PM. Practice will be at 5:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25. For seniors 65 and over and the military, it is $22.00. Juniors 12-15 and kids 6-11 are $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Chiaramonte flew to North Carolina two weeks ago to drive for his cousin, 2020 NASCAR Truck Champion and current Xfinity Series driver Sheldon Creed, at the famous Millbridge Speedway. Shoeing Creed's 600 Micro for only his second time at the track, he qualified second quickest in his group on Monday. He went from fourth to second in his heat before getting clobbered and having the injection knocked off the car. Despite that, he still finished fourth. In the night's main, he started and finished 16th. Twenty-four hours later, at Millbridge, Chiaramonte qualified 4th in Group B. He started on the outside of the front row for his heat race and picked up the checkered flag for the victory. In that night's main event, he started third. At one point in the race, he drove up to the second-place. In the end, he ended up fifth. His performances on the two nights drew a lot of attention from other drivers, fans in attendance and thousands of others worldwide watching live on DirtVision. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. RTL Traffic Control, AM Ortega, OCC Motorsports, Hyper Racing, Chop Design, Adams Motors, Hacienda Casa Blanca Fine Mexican Dining, Evil Plus Injection, King Racing Products, Tiner/Hirst, and Keizer Wheels. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADING TO THIS WEEK'S SPRINT CAR PORTION OF INDIANA MIDGET WEEK
(Chino, CA, June 4, 2024) A few hours after tangling with the wall at the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. was at Los Angeles International Airport and hopping on a flight for this week's Indiana Midget Week. Tuesday through Friday, the talented driver was slated to contest the sprint car portions of the four shows before returning to California Saturday morning for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya's trip to the Midwest was slated to kick off tonight, June 4th, at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, rain washed out the event. So, on Wednesday, Tafoya and his crew will head 90 miles southeast to the new surface at the Lawrenceburg Speedway. Thursday will feature a longer drive to Putnamville's Lincoln Park Speedway, which is 140 miles northwest. Friday's journey from Putnamville to Bloomington Speedway will be a mere 40 miles. While Tafoya is based in Chino Hills, California, he is no stranger to the three Indiana tracks he will be competing on this week. Since 2021, he has raced three times at Lawrenceburg, two times at Bloomington, and two times at Lincoln Park. Last year, during the grueling and highly competitive Indiana Sprint Week, Tafoya sat in the main events at Lincoln Park and Bloomington, finishing 18th and 19th, respectively. After the race at Bloomington, Tafoya will embark on the longest portion of the trip. He will fly 2000 miles from Indianapolis to Los Angeles. Once he lands in L.A., he will hop into a car and make the 113-mile drive to Bakersfield for the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on Saturday night. Last Saturday, while Tafoya was racing in the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17F at Ventura, his father, Eddie Sr., who was the 2016 Perris Auto Speedway Senior Sprint Car Champion, was hauling the family-owned #51T car to Indiana for this week's races. At last week's USCS race in Ventura, Tafoya, 26, started in the fifth spot and finished fourth in the third heat race. That put him on the pole for the 30-lap main event. On the first two tries to start the main event, Tafoya raced into the lead. However, the first time the race began, it was red-flagged due to a crash in turn one. The second time the green flag signaled the start of the action, cars got together just past the start-finish line, resulting in a yellow flag. On the third try to get the race underway, Tafoya again was the first car across the starting line. However, when he got to the first corner, something in his steering broke, and he became a passenger. He slid across the track, got into the wall, and tipped over. He was not injured, but the car was done for the night. - BRENT SEXTON WINS BARONA SCLS MAIN - RACING USCS SPRINTS AT VENTURA THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, May 30, 2024) Three-time lightning sprint car racing champion Brent Sexton posted his first victory of 2024 when he outdistanced the field in the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday at the Barona Speedway. This Saturday night, June 1st, the veteran driver and his son, Grant, will be back in action in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway. Sexton, 52, was making his 13th start of the 2024 season. Switching back and fourth between his 360 sprint car and his lightning sprint, it was his fifth start in the smaller car this year. Once his home track, Saturday was his first appearance at Barona since he placed second in a POWRi Southwest race last July 8th. It was only his second time racing at the track since 2022. Making the short drive from his home in nearby Lakeside, Sexton was driving his familiar #44 on the San Diego County quarter-mile oval. It was one of only two races on the SCLS schedule in 2024 that cars would race without wings. That was no bother for Sexton who has raced wingless numerous times in lightning sprints over the years and now does in full-size sprint cars in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series and USCS competition. Starting fourth in his eight-lap heat race, Sexton cut to the inside in the first bend on lap one and hijacked second place. On a track that was dry at that time of the evening, he stayed there for the duration. The second place run in his heat earned the likable Tennessee native the inside row two starting spot for the main. With the sun gone, the track was much racier than it was for the heats and much racier than it was for the first race of the year a couple of weeks earlier. That set up an exciting battle for the drivers and fans. Eager to perform, Sexton put on a show in the main event. He got a great start when the green flag began the race and was second going into turn one. He tried to knife his way into the lead in turn two, but that attempt was thwarted. What happened next was some of the best laps of lightning sprint car racing Barona fans have seen in years. Sexton and early leader Peter Benker put on a slider fest that saw the lead change hands five times from turn two on the second go-around until turn two on lap three. When Sexton took the lead on lap three, he led the remainder of the way. However, it was anything but easy. Benker fought him hard for several laps. Even though Sexton increased his advantage, Benker stayed within striking distance the entire way. One slip-up by Sexton could have cost him the race. Fortunately, he drove a near-perfect race for his initial win in 2024. This Saturday at Ventura, Sexton will be in a brand-new Triple X car. The last time he raced at Bakersfield was two weeks ago when he placed sixth in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event. On the same night, Grant, who was last season's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, placed fifth in the USCS feature. Grant will enter this week's race 15th in the USCS championship standings. Spectator gates for the first USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. - TAFOYA JUMPS TWO SPOTS IN USAC/CRA STANDINGS - HEADS TO VENTURA FOR USCS RACE SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, May 30, 2024) Shaking off the disappointment of getting clobbered from behind on the first lap and suffering a flat tire the previous week, Eddie Tafoya Jr. finished eighth last Saturday night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway. The finish allowed the likable driver to climb from 10th to eighth in the series championship standings. This Saturday, he will be competing with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, at the Ventura Raceway. For Tafoya, who finished third in the USAC/CRA standings in 2022, things started off on the right foot at Perris. He was the seventh fastest driver on the premises in hot laps. Not long thereafter, he set the eighth-fastest time in qualifying with a lap of 16.922. That placed the Chino Hills, California resident on the outside of row two in the second heat race on the 28-year-old half-mile oval. After the support divisions completed their preliminary races, the USAC/CRA cars and stars rolled onto the track for their heats. Tafoya, who will be 27 in a little over a month, scored an impressive win in the second 10-lapper of the night. His best lap in the heat was 17.571. While that was only the third-fastest time in the race, it was still an impressive performance in his first USAC/CRA heat win of the 2024 campaign. Tafoya started and finished eighth in the 30-lap main on the pleasant Southern California night. His third top 10 in the series this season propelled Tafoya up to eighth in the championship standings. Going into the next scheduled race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on June 8th, he is only 13 points out of seventh. This Saturday night, June 1st, Tafoya will head to the Ventura Raceway for the third race in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Driving the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T 360, Tafoya is ninth in the USCS standings. He is only four points behind the eighth-place driver, 10 points behind the driver in seventh, and only 13 points out of sixth. A good night could see him leapfrog all three. Tafoya, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, scored the first fast time of his career at Ventura in May of 2022. On the same night, he finished fifth in the main event. Last November at Ventura, he made his first appearance in an Inland Rigging car at the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix. A flat tire on the opening night handcuffed him for the weekend, and he missed transferring to Saturday's finale by two spots. Spectator gates for the first USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE COMES FROM THE BACK TO FINISH 12TH IN WILD MARYSVILLE MAIN
(El Cajon, CA, May 29) After coming from the back two times, Braden Chiaramonte raced under the checkered flag in 12th place in the Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial last Saturday at the Marysville Raceway. The teen's persistence paid dividends as he now ranks sixth in points heading into round four of the Elk Grove Sprint Car Challenge Tour's 2024 season at the Placerville Speedway this Friday. A stout field of 39 winged 360 sprint cars showed up at the popular quarter-mile track that is located 120 miles north of San Francisco and 120 miles west of Reno. The field was split into two groups by a pill draw for qualifying and the heat races. Chiaramonte drew into the second group of 19 cars and toured the track in 12.904. That was seventh fastest in his group and 13th best of the 39 on hand. In his 10-lap heat, the El Cajon, California racer started and finished in third. That left him one spot shy of the dash, but it guaranteed him a direct ticket into the 35-lap main event. Chiaramonte started in the 12th position for the feature that turned into a nearly one-hour marathon. The first attempt to start the race got as far as turn one before a car slid to a stop. Fortunately, the entire field missed the expensive obstacle. The second try to get the feature started only got about 35 feet farther than the first effort. This time a massive tangle saw numerous cars get involved. One of them was Chiaramonte. Chiaramonte was towed back to the pits, where the Tiner/Hirst crew quickly poured over the car. They replaced two broken shocks, bird cages, radius rods, torsion arms, and a torsion bar. They got the job done quickly, but the green flag flew before they could get pushed back onto the track. However, the race only got one lap in before the action was slowed due to another faux paw on the track. Amazingly, the #94TH was pushed back onto the racing surface for the restart and was only one lap down. Chiaramonte restarted at the back. As was the case for much of this race, only one more lap was completed. On lap 4, three cars tangled in front of Chiaramonte. With nowhere to go, he slid into the mess. Fortunately, his contact was minimal, and he was able to restart once again. The Night of Destruction like conditions continued on through the remainder of the race, but Chiaramonte was able to steer clear of the chaos. By lap 11, he was up to 16th. Four laps later, he was another spot higher in the race standings. He was still 15th, ten laps later, when officials feared cars were going to run out of fuel due to all the yellow flag laps. So, they threw a red flag, allowing all teams to add fuel to make it to the end of the race. Once the green flag flew again, Chiaramonte moved up to 14th on lap 27. He stayed there until the final circuit when he steered the Tiner/Hirst Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH past one more car to finish 13th. Make that a hard-fought for, well earned 13th for the talented driver and the top-notch crew. This Friday night's race at the Placerville Speedway will be the lid lifter for the Dave Bradway Memorial. Chiaramonte has been to Placerville one time this year. That was on May 11th when he finished second in the Placerville 360 main event. Friday's show will be Adrian Blanco Jewelry Night. The main winner will collect prize money, valuable SCCT points, and a custom watch certificate from Adrian Blanco Jewelers. The spectator gate at the famous banked red clay oval will open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors 62+, military, and Juniors 12-17 will get in for $22.00. Tickets for kids six to twelve are only $10, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available online at https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr-053124 and at the ticket window on Friday. - GRANT AND BRENT SEXTON EACH RECORD TOP TENS AT BAKERSFIELD - SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, May 23, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing's father and son team of Brent and Grant Sexton each raced at the Bakersfield Speedway last Saturday night. Nineteen-year-old Grant finished fifth in round number two of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Brent placed sixth in the companion California Lightning Sprint car series main event. After a five-race slump that did not see him record one top-10 finish, Grant has two top-5 results in the last two weeks. The first came on May 11th, when he went from 13th to third in the SoCal Lightning Sprint Car main event at the Barona Speedway. Last Saturday at Bakersfield, he started 11th in the 30-lap USCS feature and impressively marched forward to his fifth-place finish. In his Bakersfield preliminaries, Grant qualified sixth fastest in the 20-car field and had a top three slip from his grasp when he got into the slick on the last bend of his heat race. For family patriarch Brent, who just returned from his birthday festivities, including a fly fishing trip to Montana and a week in Mexico, he only raced on the CLS side of the program. The veteran racer was in the process of putting together a new car to run in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series and with the USCS. The three-time lightning sprint car champion began the night by qualifying sixth fastest in the 14-car CLS field. He then placed third in his heat race. In the CLS 20-lap main, the Tennessee native started fifth and ended up sixth. This week, the SGR drivers return to Perris for the 71st Salute to Indy. For the first time, Brent will compete in the race that began in 1948. During his Rookie of the Year season in USAC/CRA in 2023, Grant placed ninth in the Salute main event. Brent currently sits 15th in the USAC/CRA standings. He still holds bragging rights at the dinner table over Grant, who is five points behind in 16th. Through the first five races on the schedule, Brent's best finish in the series was a 13th at Perris on March 16th. Grant's best result was an 11th at Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6th. His best Perris finish was an 18th at the season opener on February 24th. For Saturday's Salute to Indy, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. Plenty will be available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - AFTER A BAD BREAK AT BAKERSFIELD, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HOPES TO CHANGE HIS LUCK SATURDAY AT SALUTE TO INDY
(Chino, CA, May 23, 2024) After a bad break in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. hopes to get things righted in the 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. It will be his first appearance in the prestigious race since an eighth-place finish in 2022. Last week at the USCS race in Bakersfield, Tafoya, 26, got off to a good start. Competing against 20 other drivers in qualifying, the friendly racer recorded the second quickest time when he toured "The West Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval" in 13.890. That made him one of only two drivers to break the 14-second barrier on the night. By the time Tafoya drove the immaculate Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T onto the "Okie Bowl" for his heat race, the surface was dry and slick, and passing was going to be at a premium. Tafoya started on the third row and found a sweet spot on the low line. He passed two cars by the time he exited turn two on the first circuit. That put him in third place, where he finished in the prelim. Inland Rigging teammate Tommy Dunkel won the heat. The track crew reworked the surface, and it looked racy for the 30-lap finale. That all looked good for Tafoya, who was starting inside the second row directly behind teammate Dunkel. However, the bad luck that had plagued him the first part of the season struck again! Early in the main, a car clobbered him from behind and flattened his left rear tire. Tafoya limped around the track until lap four, when he pulled to the infield and out of the race with a 20th-place finish. In heading back to Perris on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the track where he had one of his two top-10 finishes in 2024. At Perris, on April 27th, the Chino Hills, California resident placed ninth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car main event. His other top-10 this season came on April 6th, when he placed sixth at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. Tafoya enters Saturday's sprint car war 10th in USAC/CRA Series points. He will climb higher up on that ladder before the night ends. We will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE GETS THIRD PODIUM FINISH IN EIGHT DAYS
(El Cajon, CA, May 23) Rising teenage star Braden Chiaramonte scored a podium finish in the Tiner/Hirst-owned 94TH sprint car for the third time in eight days. His latest effort came when he placed second last Saturday night at the Marysville Raceway. The finish went along with his third-place result at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on May 10th and a second-place finish at Placerville on the 11th. Chiaramonte will return to Marysville this Saturday with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour in the Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial. The most amazing aspect of Chiaramonte's accomplishment from last week is that he had never seen the Marysville oval before. Yet, he performed flawlessly all night, from hot laps through the main event. The second-place finish sounds amazing, but it could have been more. The friendly young driver actually took the lead away on lap 20 of the main event. However, a yellow flag seconds after he took the lead reverted the lineup to the previous completed lap. Fans began to sit up and take notice of Chiaramonte in qualifying. Even though he was pitted against 24 track regulars, he still qualified third fastest with a sizzling lap of 12.637 in the Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition sponsored car. He backed that impressive performance up with a very exciting win in the third eight-lap heat race. After a slider fest with another car at the outset, the new kid on the block led all eight laps and raced across the line a half straightaway ahead of his closest pursuer. In addition to winning the heat, he also posted the fastest lap in the race at 13.325. The newcomer to the track gave the regulars more to worry about when he pulled a two in the redraw for the 25-lap finale. When the A main started, Chiaramonte was second to turn one on the start. The determined teen challenged the cushion lap after lap. When lapped traffic came into play on the 11th circuit, he tried to pass the leader on the inside coming off turn four. However, the surface was definitely "Cowboy Up" on the bottom, making it hard to pass. Undeterred, Chiaramonte was relentless in his pursuit of the leader. Building up momentum on the wide line, he chased down his foe and inched ahead when that yellow waved as the pack roared into turn one on lap 20. That meant the field was reset to the last completed lap. Thus, Chiaramonte moved back to second. Once the race restarted, the El Cajon, California teen kept the heat on until the checkered flag. In the end, he was forced to settle for second. The impressive second-place finish endeared the newcomer to the crowd. He was spectacular on the outside and may have well won the race if not for the late-race yellow. Lap eight was Chiaramonte's best circuit around the track in the main at 13.325. It was the second-fastest lap in the race, and identical to his best time in his heat race. Going into this week's SCCT show at Marysville, Chiaramonte is 13th in series points and is only 20 points out of fifth. The race will mark the beginning of four straight weeks of SCCT racing for the young driver and the remainder of the series regulars. On Friday, May 31st, it will be on to the Placerville Speedway, where Chiaramonte finished second two weeks ago in a non-SCCT race. A week later, on June 8th, he will be at the Petaluma Speedway before heading to Antioch Speedway on June 15th. Adult tickets at Marysville Raceway on Saturday are $24.00. Juniors 12-15, seniors 62+, and military are $20. Kids 6-11 cost $10.00, and those five and under will be free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or via https://www.eventsprout.com/event/marysville-raceway-2024. The front gate will open at 5:00 p.m. Cars hit the track at 5:30, with hot laps, Sierra Foothills Wine Services qualifying, and racing to follow. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE RECORDS HIS BEST 360 WINGED FINISH FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 24 HOURS
(El Cajon, CA, May 15) Last Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California, Braden Chiaramonte notched a third-place finish in the 25-lap main event. It was his best-ever result in a winged 360 race. Twenty-four hours later at the Placerville Speedway, he went one step better when he placed second in the winged 360, 25-lap main event. Thirty-two cars showed up for the "Mother's Day Madness" race on the famous ¼ mile, red clay Placerville Speedway. As usual, Chiaramonte was on his game from the start. In qualifying, he recorded a sizzling lap of 11.113 in the Tiner/Hirst-owned Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH. That was good enough for the second fastest time in the 16-car group "B." Being the fastest in group "B" meant the El Cajon, California driver, would start fourth in the fourth, eight-car, eight-lap heat race. Once the green flag dropped, "Spare Change" was part of an exciting first lap. He initially slipped back to fourth. Going into turn three, the third-place car parked on the low line. That opened up a huge window for Chiaramonte to race around the outside. As he started to go past, the slowing car got clobbered by another driver attempting to slice his way through on the inside. That collision shot the car Chiaramonte was trying to pass straight up the track and nearly into him. Fortunately, Chiaramonte got the #94TH slowed down and only had minimal contact. Chiaramonte's quick reflexes prevented what could have been a disaster. With that behind him, he got right back to work. By the time the first lap ended, he was up to fourth. Down the back chute on lap two, he picked off another car and was up to third. Even though he was third, he was far behind the two first-place cars. They had established a huge advantage over the rest of the field due to the first-lap chaos. With only six laps to go on the small track, Chiaramonte did not have time to catch the lead duo and finished third. That was good enough to directly transfer him into the main event. After a B main that looked like a bad horror flick, the A main went relatively smoothly. Chiaramonte started the 25-lap finale inside the second row in third. At the end of the first circuit, he was fourth. A picture-perfect slider in turn four on the second lap saw him advance to third. He quickly pulled away from that car and set his aim on the driver in second. Chiaramonte remained third until the 18th lap when he threw another immaculate slider in turn 4 to move up to second. He pulled that move off just in time as seconds later, a car slid to a stop in turn four. That brought out a yellow flag. The good news was, the caution allowed Chiaramonte to move directly to the leader's rear for the restart. The bad news was that the leader was Andy Forsberg. The 47-year-old has nine Placerville track championships and was seeking his 70th win on the track. Once the race resumed, Chiaramonte attempted to stay close to the Placerville legend. They pulled away from the remainder of the field. Forsberg eventually moved away from his teen pursuer. With four laps remaining, the wily veteran had a 1.666 lead, but Chiaramonte started coming on. He was closing in fast on the race-long leader but ran out of laps. When the checkered flag waved, he had cut the leader's advantage down to 0.622. "This track has not had my luck for sure," Chiaramonte told the appreciative crowd after the exciting race. "I have went off one (turn one) too many times. Just to come here and have speed all night and finish top three feels really good. I started getting better in three and four and started to catch him a little bit but just ran out of laps. We were really good. Thank you to Kyle, Steven, Tom, and everyone for helping me, working on this car, and getting me where I am. Kyle is a really good coach and Steven is really good on the wrenches. So, I just have to do my job." For the second night in a row, Chiaramonte received praise from the winner after the race ended. "You can barely beat the Tiner/Hirst cars," Forsberg announced to the fans at the end of the night. "This kid has raced like 10 times (winged 360s) and I have driven for 100 years and I can barely beat him. These kart kids and micro kids jump into sprint cars and they are so fast right away." For the next two weeks, Chiaramonte will be visiting a track that will be new to him. It is the Marysville Speedway which is located in Northeast California. This week he will be contesting a 360 winged race to get in some laps for next week's Sprint Car Challenge Tour show. Advance tickets are available at https://www.eventsprout.com/event/marysville-raceway-2024. Adult tickets are $17.00. For seniors 62+, military (with id) and juniors (12-15) it is $15.00. - AFTER MAIN RAINED OUT AT KERN, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS READY FOR BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, May 13, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. got off to a fine start when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, Presented By Inland Rigging, visited Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway for the David Calderwood Memorial on May 4th. A good result in qualifying and in his heat earned him a great starting position in the main event. However, as fast as the 27-car field was, it was not quick enough to beat a pair of rainstorms that hit the track, forcing the main event's cancelation. A field of 27 cars showed up for the race on the 1/3 mile clay oval that sits in the shadows of the more famous paved half-mile, high-banked oval. Tafoya, driving[i] the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, was third fastest in his qualifying group of nine cars with a time of 14.542. That was also the sixth fastest of the 27 cars on hand. Unfortunately, Tafoya's only racing action on the night came in the second heat race. The Chino Hills, California racing star started the 10-lapper in third. The 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2019 USAC/CRA and USAC Southwest Rookie of the Year was in the same spot when the race concluded. Sadly, that heat race would be Tafoya's final event of the night. He was slated to start outside of row four in the main, but two stubborn rainstorms sailed into the track and the main events were canceled. Putting the frustrating, wet night behind him, Tafoya will be back in the #17T when the USCS visits the Bakersfield Speedway this Saturday night, May 18th. Last month at the inaugural USCS race on the same track, the 26-year-old was moving forward in the main event and was up to sixth when mechanical issues knocked him out of the battle. Going into this week's race, he is ninth in USCS series championship points. Tafoya will return to the family-owned #51T when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Perris Auto Speedway for the prestigious 71st Salute to Indy on May 25th. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE RECORDS HIS BEST 360 WINGED RESULT AT SILVER DOLLAR SPEEDWAY
(El Cajon, CA, May 13) Teenage racing star Braden Chiaramonte scored his best finish in a 360-winged sprint car when he raced past the checkered flag third in the main event last Friday at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California. The impressive young driver led 21 of the 25 laps in the crowd-pleasing race. Chiaramonte was only making his fifth appearance, and the first since last August, at the famous track that is 600 miles north of his El Cajon, California home. However, driving the Tiner/Hirst-owned Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH, he looked like a veteran who has spent decades on the ¼ mile oval. The field was split into two groups of 22 cars each for qualifying. Chiaramonte found himself in the first group and he stopped the clocks at 11.954. That was fourth best in his group and seventh best of the 44 cars on hand. The time landed the talented young driver the pole position for the second eight-lap heat race. When the green opened the preliminary, he flew into the lead, never looked back, and scored a convincing win. Chiaramonte's prowess in qualifying and his heat garnered the third starting spot for the A main. The confident young driver did not stay third for long. He flew by the second-place car near the end of the first circuit and then went to the top of the track to stalk the leader. Like his tenure in third, his time in second place was short-lived. In turn two on the third go around, the leader flipped and brought out a red flag. That handed the lead to Chiaramonte. When the race resumed, he flexed his muscles at the front. He immediately began to pull away from the remainder of the field. By the end of lap six, he had extended his advantage to nearly a half straightaway. Just past the halfway point, Chiaramonte was enjoying a comfortable lead. However, it got uncomfortable in turn four on lap 16. As he was about to lap the car at the back of the pack, the car spun in front of him. Fortunately, Chiaramonte in all of the cars chasing him steered around the spinner. Unfortunately, that meant when the race resumed the good-sized lead "Spare Change" had built up, went by the wayside. This time when the race restarted, the competition turned up the heat on the young driver. Nevertheless, Chiaramonte fended off their advances and maintained his lofty position at the front of the pack. He held the top spot until turn four on the next to last lap when veteran Shane Golobic slid him for the lead. Chiaramonte was still second going into turn three on the last lap when he was clobbered by another car coming up the inside. That pushed him back to third at the finish. "It is still good, but we almost had that (the win)," Chiaramonte told longtime announcer Chad Hennig after the race. "It is only, I don't know, my eighth winged sprint car race. To be up here is really good. Just a couple of mistakes cost me the win. But will learn from those and come back even better. I am looking forward and keeping my head up. Just learn from my mistakes and hopefully, we will be two spots better." "Big thank you to Steven Tiner and Kyle Hirst and everyone who helps on this car," Chiaramonte continued. "A.M. Ortega, my mom and dad, my grandpa and everyone else. Without them, this would not be possible." After the race, gracious winner Golobic praised Chiaramonte. "That 94TH has been fast," hats off to those guys Golobic said. "Those guys are ripping. It says something for a young kid like Braden Chiaramonte. He is a young racer who does not have a lot of laps on this track. To be able to hop in and run that curb on that big rough top like that is really a good job." Details of his second night of racing last weekend (at the Placerville Speedway) will be coming in the next day. For the next two weeks, Chiaramonte will be visiting a track that will be new to him. It is the Marysville Speedway which is located in Northeast California. This week he will be contesting a 360 winged race to get in some laps for next week's Sprint Car Challenge Tour race. He will finish the month of May on Friday the 31st when the Sprint Car Challenge Tour visits Placerville. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. RTL Traffic Control, AM Ortega, OCC Motorsports, Hyper Racing, Chop Design, Adams Motors, Hacienda Casa Blanca Fine Mexican Dining, Evil Plus Injection, King Racing Products, Tyner, and Keizer Wheels. - AFTER A WEEK OFF, BRADEN CHIARAMONTE HEADS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR TWO RACES THIS WEEK
(El Cajon, CA, May 8) After spending last weekend watching his older sibling Bronsen win the Weedle Industries Perfect 10 Challenge Desert Race in Johnson City, California, Braden Chiaramonte will strap into the Tiner/Hirst #94TH sprint car for two races this weekend. The rising open-wheel star will be at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Friday. Twenty-four hours later and 130 miles to the south, he will be at the Placerville Speedway on Saturday. On Saturday's trip, Chiarmonte will appear on the two famous Nor Cal ovals for the first time in 2024. In the past, he has made four appearances at Silver Dollar. All four were in a winged 360 and his best result came at the 2022 Fall Nationals when he placed 10th in the A main event. Likewise, he has made four appearances at Placerville. Three of those came in 2023. Two of the four were in the same Placerville 360 Winged Sprints that he will be competing with on Saturday. He also has an appearance there with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour and one came with the USAC National Midgets at the end of 2023. His best finish on the red clay came last August 5th when he placed 12th in the track 360s. Between the winged 360, non-wing 410 and his outlaw micro, Chiaramonte has been at nine races this season. He has started nine he has started eight of the main events. He has two wins, three top-five finishes, and five top-10s. The victories came at a combined 360/410 sprint car show at Imperial Valley Raceway on March 9th and an Outlaw Micro race at Arizona's Adobe Mountain Speedway on March 30th. The only main he did not start came on March 16th at the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series main at Perris Auto Speedway when a violent heat race crash ended his night early. This weekend's races will be Chiaramonte's third and fourth starts for Tiner/Hirst in 2024. His first appearance of the year in the Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition #94TH came at the Stockton Dirt Track on April 6th. Running 10th in the main early on, two cars got together directly in front of the young racing star. Chiaramonte slid sideways to avoid them and ended up getting his right-side Nerf Bar bent into his right rear tire. A quick stop in the pit area saw the crew slap on a new right rear and send him back to the battlefield. He started at the rear and drove forward to a 14th-place when the race ended. His other appearance for Tiner/Hirst came three weeks ago at Merced. After an impressive heat race win and second-place finish in the dash, Chiaramonte was running second in the main event when he slid off the top of turn two. Like at Stockton, that forced him to restart at the back and he impressively drove up to 15th before the checkered flag ended the race. For fans who wish to see Chiaramonte race at Silver Dollar Speedway, this Friday is Fan Appreciation Night. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. Tickets for those 19 and over are $15.00. Admission is free for everyone 18 and younger. Advance tickets are available at https://silverdollar.ticketspice.com/may-10th-racing-2024. The track is located at 2357 Fair Street in Chico (95928). Tickets for those 19 and older are $15.00 on Saturday, The track website is and the office phone is 530-966-4030. At Placerville's Mother's Day Madness on Saturday, the gates will open at 3:00 p.m. Happy hour will be from 3:00 to 6:00. Cars will be on the track for hot laps at 5:15. Adult tickets are $18.00. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING APRIL 27th RESULTS - BAKERSFIELD UP NEXT ON MAY 18th
(Lakeside, CA, May 4, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing had a planned couple of weeks off from its 2024 racing schedule on May 4th and May 11th. After two straight tough weeks at the track, the father and son duo of Brent Sexton and his youngest son Grant could use the rest. They will return to action on May 18th when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging makes its second appearance at the Bakersfield Speedway. Last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway things began on the bright side when 19-year-old Grant sizzled in qualifying on the breezy evening with a time of 16.733. That was the seventh fastest of the 22 cars on hand. Brent's 17.658 was the 19th best time of the night. Heat race action matched the family duo together in the first 10-lapper. Grant, 19, was on the outside of the second row in the fourth position. Brent was two rows behind in seventh. When the Chris Fulton checkered flag ended the short race, Grant was sixth and Brent was seventh. That was very costly for Grant as it guaranteed him of not being in the invert for the first three rows of the main event. Grant, who came into the night tied for 15th in the championship standings with Brent, had a better starting spot than his dad in the 30-lap main. He was on the outside of row four. Brent was near the back on the inside of row 10. Grant, the previous season's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was doing well early on and was running in the top 10. However, it all unraveled for him in one fell swoop. In turn four on the 22nd lap, he ended up tangled with three other cars. The four-car incident produced enough damage to knock the teen out of the race with a frustrating 19th-place result. Grant's misfortune left Brent to fly the SGR flag for the remainder of the race. Unfortunately, the 51-year-old did not get much farther. However, his situation was a little more serious. The Tennessee native tangled with another car and flipped in turn four. Fortunately, he climbed out of his car unhurt. However, he had to add more to the list of replacement parts he and Grant will need before May 18th. The finishing order broke the tie between the two in the season-long standings. Brent is now alone in 15th on the data sheet. Grant is a mere five points behind. After the May 18th date at Bakersfield, Sexton Gatlin Racing will be back in action the following week when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars contest one of the nation's longest-running sprint car races, the Annual Salute to Indy, on May 25th. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. - THE FIRST OF THREE MAY RACES FOR EDDIE TAFOYA JR. THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Chino, CA, May 2, 2024) Veteran sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will begin a busy month of racing this Saturday night, May 4th, in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. After taking the Mother's Day weekend off, he will be at the Bakersfield Speedway for the next USCS race on the 18th and at Perris Auto Speedway for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series annual Salute to Indy on the 25th. Tafoya, 26, comes into Saturday's race ranked 10th after the historical first race of the USCS at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks ago. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel #17T at that first race, Tafoya was the ninth fastest of the 30 cars on hand in qualifying. He followed qualifying up with a second-place finish in his heat. In the main, Tafoya, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was moving forward after starting eighth. He marched up to sixth and was streaking toward the top five when mechanical issues forced him to the sidelines with a 22nd place finish. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 mailto:info@kernraceway.com. Last week at Perris, Tafoya contested his 10th race of the 2024 campaign. He was driving the familiar Tafoya family-owned #51T at the track where he captured The PAS Young Gun title in 2018. The personable Chino Hills, California resident came into the night 12th in the series point standings. A lap of 16.873 was the 12th fastest of the night, placing the pretty car with the red chrome trim inside the second row of heat race #3. He pushed the car to a fifth-place finish in the 10-lapper. For the 30-lap main, which turned wild over the last 10 laps with a couple of red flags and numerous yellows, Tafoya started 12th and drove forward to finish ninth. It was his second top 10 in a row in the USAC/CRA Series and was only surpassed by his sixth-place finish at Perris on March 16th. The performance shot Tafoya up to ninth in the championship standings, only 12 points out of eighth heading into the next series race at Perris on Memorial Day Weekend. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. - CRASH KNOCKS BRADEN CHIARAMONTE OUT OF USAC/CRA RACE AT PERRIS
(El Cajon, CA, May 1) Driving a brand new car, Braden Chiaramonte was working his way towards the front in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA 30-lap main event last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway. However, a tangle that involved some lapped cars gathered him in and knocked him out of the race with nine laps to go. Sadly, what could have been a top-five finish ended up being a 20th. After a practice session at the track the week before, Chiaramonte was debuting his new DRC Chassis along with a 410 engine obtained from Arizona native Sterling Cling who now does most of his racing in the Midwest. Of the 22 cars on hand on Saturday, Chiaramonte ended up 13th fastest in qualifying with a time of 17.031. That was his second-fastest lap in 2024 at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. It was only surpassed by his 16.995 on March 16th. Chiaramonte, in his pretty #73B, started on the outside of the front row in the first 10 lap heat race. When the checkers ended the preliminary, he ended up fourth. That Kept him in contention for one of the invert spots to start in the first three rows of the main event. Unfortunately, after the second and third heat races, he was out of the invert and was forced to start the 30-lapper in 13th. In the main, like always, Chiaramonte was moving forward. He was picking off cars and confidently made his way into the top 10. At the halfway point, the talented young driver was up to eighth and seemed headed for the top five. However, coming off turn four on the 22nd circuit, he got caught up in someone else's mess and was done for the night with a 20th place finish. Despite other racing duties that saw the El Cajon, California resident miss the two USAC/CRA races in Arizona, Chiaramonte is still 21st in the championship standings and he is third in the Rookie of the Year chase. Chiaramonte is taking this weekend off to watch his older brother Bronsen race in the "Weedle Industries Perfect 10 Challenge" desert race in Johnson City, California. Next weekend he will be back in action in his winged 360 sprint car at a pair of races on two of the crown jewel tracks in Northern California. On Friday the 10th, he will be at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Twenty-four hours later and 120 miles south, he will compete on the banked, 58-year-old Placerville Speedway. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR SEXTON GATLIN RACING IN THE INAUGURAL USCS RACE AT BAKERSFIELD
(Lakeside, CA, April 26, 2024) The first-ever Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway proved to be a tough one for Sexton Gatlin Racing drivers Brent Sexton and his son Grant as both did not finish the 30-lap main event. On the brighter side, Brent, a two-time California Lightning Sprint Car Series champion, placed sixth in the CLS main. After qualifying concluded, 19-year-old Grant was second fastest in his group and third fastest of the 28 cars who turned in laps on the 1/3 mile track. Brent was matched against Grant in group #1 and was eighth fastest. Being in the same group meant they would also square off in the first heat race of the night. Grant started fourth in the 10-lapper and Brent began in seventh. Grant advanced one spot forward to finish third. That earned him a direct transfer into the A main. Brent finished right where he started and had to take a trip to the B main. The B main ended up being flagged early with Brent in third place. He got a ticket to the 30-lapper but unbeknownst to him at the time, he was not going to get a lot of feature laps in. Early in the going, he slammed the front stretch wall and tore the rear end out of the #44. He was credited with 25th. Grant's fate in the main seemed a lot better. The 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year began the race in 10th but drove forward to the fourth-place spot. In the tight race between the top four, the youngster was all over the second and third-place cars. However, they were mired in heavy-lapped traffic. The odds of trouble with the lappers grew with each passing go around but the laps were dwindling fast. Unfortunately, not fast enough. Going into turn three on lap 28, the second-place car got into a lapper. The third-place car had nowhere to go and plowed into what was quickly turning into a mess. Then the accordion effect swept up Grant and one other car. That tangle proved to be the end of the line for Grant on the night. A top-four finish flew out the window with the crash and he ended up 16th. Not long after the USCS main, Brent started eighth in the 25-lap California Lightning Sprint feature and closed the night with a refreshing sixth-place result. This Saturday, the father and son team will be in action at Perris Auto Speedway in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race. Ironically, they are tied for 15th place in the championship standings. In addition, Brent is currently second in the series Rookie of the Year race. For fans who would like to see the Sexton's racing at Perris, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available at the ticket window. The track is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. After Saturday's race at Perris, the team will take two weeks off from the track. Brent, who is about to celebrate birthday #52, is jumping on a plane on Sunday morning and heading for a fly fishing expedition in Montana. Once he returns, he is headed for several days in Mexico. Up next on the team's racing schedule will be the USCS race at Bakersfield on May 11th. Two weeks later it will return to Perris Auto Speedway for the Salute to Indy on May 25th. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. - AFTER A GOOD START, MECHANICAL WOES TOOK A TOLL ON TAFOYA AT BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, April 25, 2026) After a good start in the inaugural Ultimate Sprint Car Series race Presented By Inland Rigging at the Bakersfield Speedway, mechanical ills foiled Eddie Tafoya Jr.'s hopes of victory last Saturday night. This Saturday Tafoya will be at his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for round #5 of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars Series. Tafoya, in the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T, came out in the second of the three qualifying groups and turned in a lap of 13.711. That was good enough for fourth fastest in the group of 10 and the 10th fastest of the 28 cars that recorded qualifying times. Tafoya's time placed him outside the front row for the second heat race in USCS history. The steady driver stayed there for the duration of the 10-lap race. That sounds easier than it was. He had to fend off a couple of determined drivers to hang onto the runnerup spot on "The Fastest 1/3 High Banked Clay Oval In The West." For the main, second-generation racer Tafoya, who spent a lot of time racing with the USAC National Sprint Cars in 2023, came from the outside of row four in the eighth position on the start. It was clear that he had a good car as he advanced one spot forward to seventh before the end of the second go-around. A couple of laps later he was up to sixth and looked to be ready for the top five when he was rocked by mechanical issues and was done for the night. What seemed to be a certain top-five ended up with a frustrating 22nd. Nonetheless, he still comes out of the inaugural event 10th in USCS points. This Saturday night, Tafoya will be back in the family-owned #51T for the USAC/CRA Series event on the track that is nearest to his Chino Hills, California home, Perris Auto Speedway. Tafoya goes into Saturday's race after a season-best USAC/CRA sixth-place finish three weeks ago at the Mohave Valley Raceway. The MVR result advanced him to 12th in the USAC/CRA standings, only 15 points out of 10th. For fans who would like to see Tafoya live in action at Perris, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. After Saturday, Tafoya will have three races in the month of May. The first two will be USCS races starting with the David Calderwood Memorial at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on the fourth. On the 18th, he will be back at the Bakersfield Speedway. He will close the month with the prestigious USAC/CRA Salute to Indy at Perris on the 25th. Affable Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - CHIARAMONTE'S SPEED IMPRESSIVE AT MERCED - DEBUTS NEW CAR AT PERRIS ON SATURDAY
(El Cajon, CA, April 24) Always busy Braden Chiaramonte made the trek to the lightning-quick Merced Speedway last Saturday night for round #2 of the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour. The teen impressed his fellow competitors and fans by winning his heat, placing second in the dash, and running second early on in the main. Back in the Tiner/Hirst Enterprises Slade Precision Shocks/Larry Davis Farms/System 1 Pro Ignition/#94TH, Chiaramonte was the sixth fastest qualifier of 18 cars in Group B. The time placed the El Cajon, California resident on the outside of the front row in his 10-lap heat race. After a spirited battle early on, Chiaramonte scored a runaway victory for his first SCCT heat race win of the year. The young driver's prowess in the heat sent him to the six-lap dash. Things kept going the way of the driver known as "Spare Change" when he pulled the #1 spot. For fans unfamiliar with Chiaramonte who may have thought his heat race victory was a fluke, they were convinced he was the real deal after the dash. Starting on the outside of the front row against a field that included several veteran stars who had a lot more experience on the track than himself, he fought tooth and nail throughout the race. Running second, he was passed by one of Nor Cal's biggest stars. Not to be deterred, Chiaramonte awed the crowd when he ducked back underneath the driver one lap later, made the pass, and pulled away to sew up the outside front row starting spot for the 30 lap main. Chiaramonte flexed his muscles early on in the finale. Coming off turn two on the opening lap, a pair of drivers aggressively dove to the inside of the teen sensation. However, running the high line where he was so fast all night long, he easily beat them to turn three. He then set his sights on the leader and began to reel him in. At the end of the fourth circuit, he was 0.472 behind the race's front runner. By the time a yellow flag slowed the action five laps later, he had shaved the leader's advantage to 0.453. As soon as the race resumed, Chiaramonte continued to rip the top and was close behind the leader. However, coming off turn two on lap 11, he slid off the top of the track bringing out a yellow flag. Chiaramonte went to the work area where the Tiner/Hirst crew quickly changed the left rear tire and sent him back onto the battleground. For the restart, Chiaramonte was at the back in 23rd. However, he was not there for long. He immediately began picking off the competition and was all the way back up to 15th when the checkered flag brought the proceedings to a conclusion. It was not the outcome the young driver wanted, but his overall performance drew wide praise on social media after the race. "Second race of the year in the #360 SCCT," Chiaramonte reported to his Facebook fans. "Went out late in qualifying and the track was really slick but still went sixth quick. Started second in the heat and finished first. Pulled the #1 for the dash and finished second. I started second in the main, was running down the leader and made a mistake which cost me a good finish. Overall it was a good night. We have tons of speed, just need to put it all together. Thanks to everyone who helps." Heading into the third round of the SCCT season at Marysville on May 25th, Chiaramonte is 13th in the championship standings. Twenty-four hours earlier and 88 miles south of Merced, Chiaramonte ran his 600cc non wing Micro in the Jet Bowl Classic at the Lemoore Jet Bowl. In his first micro race of the year, the 17-year-old out qualified the 27 car field with a lap of 11.627. He followed that up by starting fourth and finishing second in his heat race. For the 30-lap main, he started sixth and slipped back to ninth. He then charged all the way up to second and was seventh when the checkered flag flew. . The Saturday, April 27th, Chiaramonte will return to Perris Auto Speedway for the first time since his March 16th crash on the famous Riverside County oval. That crash destroyed his car so he will be driving a brand new DRC Chassis with a powerful 410 engine purchased from Midwest racer Sterling Cling. At the February opener on the same track, he finished eighth. Spectator gates at Perris will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. The track is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking.
