- Moran Earns Career-Best Payday in Silver Dollars Nationals at Huset's
BRANDON, SD (July 20, 2024) - Devin Moran took the lead at the start of the 14th Annual Silver Dollar Nationals Presented by MyRacePass on Saturday night Huset's Speedway and led all 80-laps to pick up a career-best $53,000 for his victory in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event. It was Moran's first career win in the crown jewel event that was held at I-80 Speedway in Nebraska for 12 years before moving to the South Dakota facility. Moran fought off two former Silver Dollar Nationals winners, Bobby Pierce and Brandon Sheppard, to take the win. Pierce, the Silver Dollar Nationals winner in 2019 and Sheppard who won in 2020 and 2023, trailed Moran across the finish line. Tyler Erb, who started 13th finished fourth with another former Silver Dollar Nationals winner, Tim McCreadie rounding out the top five drivers. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the sixth time this season, Moran celebrated with his team after taking the biggest win of his career. Moran's previous best finish in the race was third in 2022. "I guess this officially is the biggest race I ever won you know. In the last 25 laps I was literally ripping every straightaway. I am out of breath. I knew Bobby and Sheppy were ripping, and I was just doing everything I could to stay in front. I saw Sheppy just keep poking, keep poking. I tried to run on the bottom, but I felt so slow. That was a workout," said the driver who has now recorded 14 consecutive top four finishes since mid-June. "Roger Sellers put his faith in myself and my great crew you know. He got us on board last year and it was a little shaky to start with, but we just kept working and working," said the Dresden, Ohio native who became the tenth different winner of the race that began in 2011. Pierce, who led every lap the previous two preliminary nights came home in second earning a $20,000 payday after he and Sheppard swapped the second spot on several occasions during the race. "I really don't know what more I could have done. Devin was good and I think we just missed a little on the right front set-up. It was kind of bouncing around in the corner and we scared ourselves out when we hot lapped, we kind of had a different set-up on. The track just a got a little more characteristic in it than we thought and going through the corner I guess just how the car bounced is how I went. I had my hands full for a while. It was fun battling with Brandon and Devin. He [Moran] drove a heck of a race there at the very end." Sheppard, who was attempting to become just the second driver to win three Silver Dollar Nationals, rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. He was asked if he could have done anything differently during the 80-lap affair as he collected $10,000 for third. "I don't know. I like to think I should have picked the bottom on that first restart when I got to second. After I got second back later in the race, I picked the bottom where I thought I needed to be, and I didn't take off as good and I bounced coming out the corner. I think I got up on the berm a little bit too much and that allowed Bobby to get back by me. All-in-all we had a good weekend; really it had just awesome balance. It was a pleasure to drive." The winner's Roger Sellers, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Lazydays RV, McHugh Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, CarSourceAuto.com, Red Oak Pub, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Lincoln Smith Racing, Pee Wee's Wrecker Service, Southeastern Equipment, and Haulin' Haskell's. Completing the top ten were Mike Marlar, Hudson O'Neal, Garrett Alberson, Daulton Wilson, and Jonathan Davenport. - Moran Goes Back-to-Back with Slocum 50 Triumph at 34
BURLINGTON, Iowa (July 11, 2024) - Coming off a dominating performance last Saturday night at his home track, Devin Moran went back-to-back in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series - winning Thursday night's 16th Annual Brent Slocum 50 Presented by Roederer's Pit Stop. Moran's fifth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season was worth $15,555 for the event honoring the 2004, 34 Raceway track champion Brent Slocum, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 28. There were four lead changes among two drivers with Moran taking the lead for good on lap 16 from Tim McCreadie. Moran pulled away for a 2.547 second victory over defending series champion, Hudson O'Neal, who finished second in his return to SSI Motorsports. McCreadie led the opening lap until Moran passed him on lap two to gain the lead for the first time in the race. However, McCreadie didn't give up as he forged ahead of Moran on lap 11 but couldn't hold off the Ohio racer. Moran seized control on lap 16 - a lead which he never relinquished. Daulton Wilson came from his ninth place starting spot to round out the Big River Steel Podium in third. The current Big River Steel Chase for the Championship presented by ARP points leader Ricky Thornton Jr., in his start for Koehler Motorsports, finished fourth after starting 13th. Garrett Alberson rounded out the top five. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 13th time in his career, Moran will maintain third-place in the points heading to Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday night for the Diamond Nationals. "We are right on track. I feel like we have really hit our stride here in the last couple weeks. I think that's eight or nine podium finishes in a row. That's just a testament to how great my crew guys are and how great my car owner and this whole team is. I have watched the Slocum 50 the last eight or ten years on DirtonDirt, and I never got to race it because it's so far from home. It's just cool to come out here and race in front of this crowd and the Slocum family. I have never met them, but I am sure I will get the privilege too," said the Moran, who became the sixth different winner in six Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series races at 34 Raceway. O'Neal, who started sixth battled with McCreadie before finally clearing him on lap 22. "There are no words to describe the sense of relief I have. I told them guys that it feels like I've won almost after the week it's been. Over the last few months, it's just been in general my racing career has been a little up-and-down and it just feels good to get back to rolling pretty good. I felt like I had a really good racecar there I just missed a little bit of balance right there at the end. I just couldn't roll the bottom like he [Moran] could there the last half of the race." Wilson was one of the fastest cars on the track throughout the mid portion on the race, but his momentum stalled out once he got to third as he challenged O'Neal for several laps before finishing third. "The way it's been going here lately I am tickled to death. I thought I had a shot at second for a minute then I really hurt my left rear tire bad running around the top of one and two down there, so I had to get down. Huddy never left the door open for me and the lapped cars were tricky to get around." The winner's Roger Sellers, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Lazydays RV, Southeastern Equipment, Red Oak Pub, Haulin' Haskell's, Smoky Mountain Speedway, CarSourceAuto.com, Pee Wee's Wrecker Service, Bilstein Shocks, Lincoln Smith Racing, and McHugh Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. - Moran Defends Home Turf with Muskingum County Triumph
ZANESVILLE, Ohio (July 6, 2024) - Hometown driver Devin Moran thrilled the capacity crowd on Saturday night at Muskingum County Speedway - leading all the way to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Freedom 60 worth $20,000. Moran's win was his fourth of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season, but his first series win since 2013 at the track promoted by his father, Hall-of-Famer Donnie Moran and his family. Ricky Thornton Jr. came from fifth to finish second as he trailed Moran by 3.185 seconds at the finish. Max Blair was third followed by Jonathan Davenport and Matt Cosner. The stats will show that Moran led all 60 laps, but three different drivers took their best shot at him during the race with Tim McCreadie, Tyler Carpenter, and Thornton all holding the runner-up spot at some point. McCreadie, who started alongside on the front row held the second spot for the first nine laps of the race until Carpenter got going on the top and moved past McCreadie on lap ten. Carpenter was able to keep Moran in his sights until a lap 30 restart when McCreadie and Thornton got by him. McCreadie, looking for his first win in the Rocket1 House Car, yielded the second spot to Thornton on lap 41 as Blair joined the party and he began to put the pressure on Thornton for second. With no caution flags in the last 25 laps, Moran had to navigate heavy traffic that allowed Thornton and Blair to close briefly, but Moran would ultimately pull away. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 12th time in his career, the racer who scored his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win at the same track 11 years ago, climbed from his #99 to the cheers from the massive crowd on hand to witness the event that carried an $80,000 feature purse. "Man, this is just awesome. All the glory to God and these great race fans. I love coming here! We only get to come here once or twice a year. It was an awesome night and I'm glad to be back in victory lane with the Lucas Oil guys. It took a while to get around those guys in the back. Our car was so good. I just want to give my car owner, Roger Sellers, a huge shoutout as he drove all the way up from Tennessee to be here tonight. Thanks to my dad, my mom and my whole family they put on a great event tonight." Thornton came home in second and will maintain the series points lead heading to Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri next week. "I needed to win the heat race to be able to stand where Devin is tonight. I felt like I was pretty decent there. It's tough to start fifth and pass here. It was so top dominant there forever. I just never got myself in a good enough position and then I got a couple of lucky restarts there and I thought I could run him [Moran] down and the lapped cars were racing harder than I was for the lead. It was one of those deals, we'll take second and head on down the road." For the second year in a row, at Muskingum County, Blair rounded out the Big River Steel Podium with his third-place finish. "This track races like Eriez, Pa and like a lot of tracks back home. I am much more familiar and comfortable with tracks like this. That was a lot of fun. I thought I was going to have Ricky there for a long time, I think we raced about 20 laps side-by-side and we never touched. This crowd was awesome tonight especially on the Fourth of July weekend, because it's tough, there is so much racing going on everywhere so for the crowd to be this good that is pretty cool." The winner's Roger Sellers-owned, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Lazydays RV, McHugh Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram, CarSourceAuto.com, Bilstein Shocks, Red Oak Pub, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Lincoln Smith Racing, Pee Wee's Wrecker Service, and Haulin' Haskell's. - Troutman and Moran Highlight Friday Prelims at Lernerville
SARVER, PA (June 21, 2024) - Drake Troutman and Devin Moran scored Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series preliminary feature wins on Friday night at Lernerville Speedway. Troutman earned his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory in the first 25-lap race earning $5,000 for his win. Moran scored his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the year - also pocketing $5,000 for winning the second main event of the night. Troutman outran Ross Robinson, Tim McCreadie, Garrett Alberson, and Gregg Satterlee for the win in the first feature event. Mason Zeigler and Troutman had a great battle for the top spot - trading the lead four times in the first nine laps of the race until Troutman was able to gain some breathing room over Zeigler at that point. McCreadie moved to second on lap 12 as he and Robinson raced side-by-side for several laps until the final circuit when Robinson was able to edge out the two-time champion at the finish. Troutman's winning margin was 0.443 seconds. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the first time in his career, Troutman became the 91st different driver to win a series race. "I don't even know what to say to be honest with you," said the 19-year-old from Hyndman, Pennsylvania. "I didn't think we would get one of those for a while for sure. I don't know what to say, I am speechless. I've just got a bunch of kids working for me," as his voice trailed off. "There was a pretty big cushion up there on the top side. We were just able to really race good there on the bottom. This Longhorn Chassis is really good. We've fought a lot of bad luck and just things happening, we are learning everyday on what not to do. We wanted to put on a good show for you fans so I guess we will see what we have for tomorrow night. This one's for my dad for sure." Robinson, who ran fourth in the Show-Me 100 last month finished in the runner-up spot in the first preliminary feature after getting by McCreadie on the final lap. "That's cool for Drake. He's a darn good kid and he's a heck of a shoe so I mean he earned it. He gets it done at a place I am not that comfortable at I can't run the top like he can. It's really cool to be up here on the podium again." McCreadie continues to make strides with the Rocket1 team as he earned another Big River Steel Podium finish, after running as high as second in the race. "Congrats to him [Troutman]. He's a really good kid. He races as hard as he can, and he really doesn't get into anybody out here. It's hard to race and not touch anybody. Like I said they are good people, and he did a great job tonight." The winner's DTR Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by RFI Resources, Wheeler Fleet Solutions, Stone Natural Resources, Smith Warehouse, Jerry's Siding, Roofing, and Windows, Certain Teed, Thunderhill Trucking, Coltman Farms. Morocco Welding, Glassmere, Shaffer Construction, Shoe's Diesel Repair, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten in the first feature were Mason Zeigler, Jared Miley, Tyler Wyant, Jimmy Owens, and Trevor Collins. The second feature saw defending Lernerville track champion and current points leader Michael Norris bolt from his pole starting spot to take the lead. Norris held the lead until he bumped the cushion in turn two which allowed Moran to take over the lead on lap six. Norris then entered turn one at full speed and went over the turn one embankment after making contact with the outside wall to bring out the first caution of the race. Moran then held a steady lead over the field as Thornton tried to chase him down. A caution with 16 laps scored allowed Thornton and Marlar to restart behind Moran. Moran pulled away in the final nine laps as Marlar got by Thornton on lap 20 to take second where he stayed in until the checkers fell. Hudson O'Neal and Jonathan Davenport rounded out the top five. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 11th time in his career Moran was needing a good run after suffering DNF the night before. Moran commented in Victory Lane regarding the track prep done before the second feature began. "I mean I knew it was hard [the racing surface]. I was kind of giggling about it, everybody else was freaking out about it. We really didn't do anything, didn't change tires like everybody else did. It worked out in our favor. The guys did a good job." "It's awesome to finally get a win here. This is such a historic track, and they always do a great job on the racetrack and I love coming here. I am glad to get my first win at Lernerville and it would be awesome to get one tomorrow night in front of all of the Big River Steel people." Marlar, who started eighth climbed to second at the finish in his Skyline Motorsports entry. "We probably get to start out front in a heat race tomorrow night. If you can win or don't win a heat race you are still pretty good in the feature so that's a big help. I am really happy to be back up here on the podium tonight. I had a really good car tonight even though I started back there a ways." Thornton rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "I had a good car I felt like we had the wrong tire there. They watered it and it looked like it would be a lot muddier than it was. Congrats to Devin, his stuff was pretty good. Hopefully it sets us up for a good starting spot in a heat race tomorrow." - Overton Banks $50,000 in Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain
MARYVILLE, Tenn. (June 15, 2024) - Brandon Overton was in charge from the start of the Mountain Moonshine Classic on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway - collecting $50,000 for the win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned event after leading all 60 laps of the race. Overton held off challenges early from Ryan Gustin and late in the race from Ricky Thornton Jr. but never trailed for his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of 2024. Thornton finished in second and Gustin rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. Jonathan Davenport was fourth and Brandon Sheppard completed the top five finishers. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 18th time in his career the Evans, Georgia driver became the 11th different winner this year on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. "I didn't know if I was ever going to win another race. I have been knotted up all day. We were not very good last night, and we worked on it. We qualified good, we heat raced good, and I knew it was all up to me to not screw it up. We made the right decisions and I think the first lap me and Ryan, we both knew getting out in front early was important. We kind of rubbed down there, but that's awesome we were the only two Infinity Chassis' here and we ran one-two most of the race. So, hats off to Eric [Wells] and everybody back at the shop. To win in front of all these people I appreciate all of you coming out. It was a special night." Thornton chased down Overton in the closing laps but ran out of time falling 0.824 seconds short at the finish. "It was a really good night for us. I was a little mad I didn't qualify in front of Brandon in our group. I knew him starting on the pole that it was going to be really tough to pass him. The lapped cars made it really tough on him there was a lot of them that you kind of had to slide and hope they slowed down. All-in-all it was good weekend for us. Congrats to Overton and to Ryan for a good race as well." For Gustin it was his first Big River Steel Podium finish since All-Tech earlier in the year. "We'll take it, obviously when those yellows kept coming out I kept taking the top on those restarts. I would get a good start, but Ricky had a really good restart there on the last one he got us. I've got to tip my hat to him he left me room on every restart so thanks to him for that. These Infinity Chassis have been really good, we have been off a little there compared to where we needed to be. To finish third in a crown jewel race we will take it anytime." The winner's Wells and Sons Motorsports, Infinity by Wells Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Coltman Farms, Garnto Southern, Big Dog Stump and Tree, Boswell Oil, R.W. Powell Construction, Convenient Lube, Muscle Factory, Harco Construction, and Victory Fuel, Hurst Construction, All-Star Concrete, Penske Racing Shocks, and Dirt Mafia. Completing the top ten were Devin Moran, Tim McCreadie, Nick Hoffman, Dale McDowell, and Kyle Bronson. - Thornton Sweeps Night One of Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain
MARYVILLE, Tenn. (June 14, 2024) - The current Big River Steel Chase for the Championship presented by ARP points leader, Ricky Thornton, Jr. led all the way to win Friday night's $10,000 to win Mountain Moonshine Classic opener at Smoky Mountain Speedway. Thornton collected his ninth series win of the 2024 as he crossed the finish line 1.240 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Tim McCreadie. Dale McDowell rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third followed by Devin Moran and Daulton Wilson. With his 37th career win Thornton has now tied McCreadie for sixth on the series' all-time win list as he now sets his sights on his second consecutive Mountain Moonshine Classic win paying $50,000 on Saturday night. "I didn't mind seeing that yellow," said Thornton referring to the only caution of the race for Drake Troutman's flat tire with 25 laps scored. Thornton was racing in heavy traffic as McDowell had closed to within a car length of Thornton before the yellow flag waved. "I was running too hard trying to get by the lapped cars there. I was really beating my tires. So, the yellow came out and I saw T-Mac get back to second and I knew he didn't pass Dale on the bottom, so I knew I had to move up and just try and keep some speed there. Me and Ross [Robinson] hit a little bit there when I was lapping him. He was just trying to race, and he had no idea I was there so luckily it wasn't too bad. Overall, it was a really good night for us, I think we broke the track record in qualifying. Hopefully the car is this good tomorrow." McCreadie, who was coming off a second-place finish in the Show-Me 100 claimed the runner up spot again Friday night at Smoky Mountain. "Yeah, we will take it. I mean these guys went to work everyday this week after Eldora trying to make this car more suitable to me as a driver and it came right out of the box tonight and was fast from the get-go. This is the first night we probably put together a whole night where we have been good all night." McDowell was putting the pressure on Thornton as the two maneuvered through traffic, but the caution flag did not help McDowell's cause in trying to pass Thornton for the race lead. "I just didn't want to see that caution; Ricky really didn't know where to go when you're leading. I could get right there and work around, but when the caution came out, I didn't really know where to choose. I felt the top and I was a little tight. Shane [McDowell] didn't really have time with the track conditions. It was a good night; it is good anytime you can finish in the top three or five with these guys." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Hoker Trucking, Coltman Farms, Dyno One Inc., West Side Tractor Sales, Bilstein Shocks, EMD Wraps, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Murty Farms. Completing the top ten were Mike Marlar, Brandon Overton, Nick Hoffman, Garrett Alberson, and Jonathan Davenport. - Moran Returns to Lucas Oil Victory Lane with $30,000 Win at Fairbury
FAIRBURY, ILLINOIS (May 18, 2024) - Devin Moran regained the lead from Jason Feger on lap 45 and went on to win the FALS Spring Shootout - Presented by Titan Industries on Saturday night at Fairbury Speedway. Moran collected $30,000 for his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season. Moran, who won the track's signature event, the Prairie Dirt Classic in 2018, held off Ricky Thornton, Jr., the defending PDC champion for the win. Brandon Sheppard took third followed by Feger, and Jonathan Davenport. Moran started on the outside of the front row and took the lead at the start of the 60 lap-race. Mike Marlar grabbed second behind Moran at the start as he trailed last year's runner-up in the championship points for the first 16 circuits until Feger, who started sixth took over second from Marlar on lap 17. Feger was not done yet and after reaching second took just two more laps to get the lead passing Moran on lap 19. Feger, who entered the race with three career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victories used the outside line to try and extend his lead out over Moran, and Sheppard who had climbed to third. The trio of Feger, Moran, and Sheppard ran that way until Moran was able to regain the point from Feger on lap 45. Thornton then started to get going, after running outside the top five for several laps. The current championship point leader, who was looking for his fourth series win in a row, moved into the second spot as Feger fell to fourth behind Sheppard. Moran stayed glued to the bottom of the track as the race went with a long stretch of green flag racing to the end. Thornton made a last-ditch effort on the final circuit but came up 0.760 seconds short of Moran at the finish. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, for the tenth time in his career, Moran, who currently sits third in the championship standings was relieved to get back to Victory Lane at Fairbury for the first time in 6 years. "I was trying to be patient and save my tires a little because he was running the top," said Moran after seeing Feger pass him for the lead. "I saw there was 25 to go and I knew it was time to go, I knew I needed to get by him. Feger didn't move down, and thank goodness, because it worked out for us. It's hard to lead here when you see the 20RT behind you on the scoreboard, but fortunately for me I was able to stay on the bottom, I wasn't going to move from there." Thornton who has six Big River Steel Podium finishes in 2024, all wins, had his first second-place finish of the season. "If I could have won my heat race, I might have had a better shot at the win. I didn't fire off as good as I needed to and it kind of took me a while to get going. We just slowly and methodically worked our way forward. There for a while I thought Feger was going to win the thing; he took off like a rocket there. Congrats to Devin; his stuff has been really good." Sheppard, who rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third, tried valiantly in the last 10 laps to get by Moran and Thornton using the top line, but couldn't get close enough. "They were all single file around the bottom, and I figured I could give it a whirl once at least. I think I could have been more aggressive at the beginning of the race. I had a pretty good balanced car all night long." The winner's Roger Sellers, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Lazydays RV, Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Bilstein Shocks, McHugh Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, Red Oak Pub, Haulin' Haskell's, Car Source Auto, and Smoky Mountain Speedway. Completing the top ten were Mike Marlar, Nick Hoffman, Tim McCreadie, Mike Harrison, and Cody Overton.
