- TOMMY DUNKEL EXPERIENCES FIRST CHILI BOWL RACE AND HAS A SUCCESSFUL START AS A SPRINT CAR TEAM OWNER
(Menifee, CA, February 1, 2023) For Southern California racing aficionado Tommy Dunkel, the month of January was an extension of Christmas. To start the year, the Menifee, California racer took part in the world-famous Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the very first time. If that wasn't enough, he became the car owner of the USAC/CRA Sprint Car team that features star driver Brody Roa. The new owner/driver combo swept to victory in two races in Arizona at the end of the month. 301108008_8680479125302912_2804138171610849063_n.jpg Tommy Dunkel in action in the Inland Rigging #17A Sprint Car at Perris in 2022. Bobby Kimbrough photo. The Chili Bowl, which drew over 350 cars, marked Dunkel's initial time racing a midget. Widely known as the biggest midget race in the world, it matches drivers from a variety of different disciplines of racing including NASCAR, Indy Cars, NHRA, USAC Sprint Cars & Midgets, and World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. For most, including Dunkel, it is a dream to be a part of the show. He was over the moon to be a part of the program that was staged in the massive SageNet Center and was shown around the world on Flo Racing and MAVTV. Getting to race the Dunkel Farms/Inland Rigging/Osborn Speed and Machine/United Asset Sales/Southside Mowers sponsored Boss Chassis/Esslinger, Dunkel finally flew into action on night four of the six evening event (all drivers compete once in the first five days and come back for Saturday's finale). Dunkel's first race was an eight-lap heat against a tough field of drivers. Forced wide on the start, he ended up with a seventh-place finish. The heat race outcome placed Dunkel in one of the night's two C mains. The midget rookie started 14th in the rough-and-tumble affair and came home 12th. That put him in one of the very early Saturday preliminary main events and meant he would have to make more transfers than anyone in the history of the Chili Bowl to make the A main. Being a rookie along with some car issues, Dunkel knew his chances of that happening were impossible. "Our prelim was Thursday and we kind of really struggled with the car," Dunkel said. "Unfortunately, I wasn't in the best of equipment. After Thursday I just decided to sit out Saturday's alphabet soup. I really wanted to run but for some safety reasons and just not really getting the car to work for me, I decided to bow out." While he exited the event early, it does not mean Dunkel is done with midget racing. In fact, quite the contrary. The exhilaration of being a part of such a high-profile race and being on the track with superstar drivers bit him hard and he now has the itch to get back to Tulsa. In fact, he is already making plans to be a part of the show in the upcoming years. "Racing a midget was a lot different (from racing a sprint car) but I will tell you, I am hooked," Dunkel enthused about the experience. "To see a midget in the Inland Rigging stable is not too far-fetched anymore. Honestly, it will probably be just for the Chili Bowl. I can definitely see making that a yearly deal. With the sprint car thing getting as serious as it is right now, I don't know if I will have a whole lot of time to race a midget on the West Coast." "I really enjoyed it and they are a lot of fun," Dunkel continued about his first foray into the lightweight cars. "The power-to-weight ratio is pretty high on them. They are really responsive cars to drive. I enjoyed it, and it was a thrill. In my heat race, I was lined up next to Shuman (Casey Shuman). My practice session had Rico Abreu and a few other big names. It was nerve-wracking, but I had some fast guys to follow. The nerves were at a solid 10 just walking into that place. The prestige that comes with that race is huge. To be able to compete there was a pretty big milestone for me." Soon after the Chili Bowl ended, Dunkel met with veteran racer Roa and took on some more duties fielding a car for the star driver in this year's USAC/CRA Series. To say the least, they got off to a dream start when Roa swept the two opening races at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway last weekend. "We are over the top really," happy car owner Dunkel said on Sunday. "We were hoping for a decent run with a brand new car, new team, and a whole new package. To go out there and sweep the weekend was a little unexpected. We are just over the top about it."' thumbnail.jpg Brody Roa scored two wins in the Dunkel Farms #17R last week in Arizona. A.J. Johnson photo. After three weeks away from the track, Dunkel will return to action when the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series opens its 2023 campaign on the Dirt Track at the Kern County Raceway in Bakersfield on February 25th. From that day through the first week in July, Inland Rigging cars, with Dunkel or Roa behind the wheel, will be racing every single weekend before getting a week off. Dunkel would like to thank the following for making the team's racing efforts possible. Inland Rigging, Dunkel Farms, United Asset Sales, Osborne Speed & Machine, Sander Engineering, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, K-1 Race Gear, Molecule, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - GRANT SEXTON LAUNCHES USAC/CRA ROOKIE CAMPAIGN THIS WEEK AT THE COCOPAH SPEEDWAY
(Lakeside, CA, January 26, 2023) 2021 POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Grant Sexton has his eyes set on another title in 2023. The teenage racer will open his first full season of 410 sprint car racing and his campaign for "Rookie of the Year" when the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Arizona's Cocopah Speedway this Friday and Saturday, January 27th and 28th. It will be his first ever time racing at the track known as the "Diamond in the Desert." Sexton, who lives in Lakeside, California, did have a few runs in full-size sprint cars in 2022. They included four events with USAC/CRA, three shows at Ventura including the Turkey Night Grand Prix, and an open comp show at the Imperial Valley Raceway. The talkative teen won his first-ever start in a full-size sprinter at Ventura on April 16th. His second-best finish was when he made the podium with a third at Imperial Valley in October. The well-spoken teen's initial efforts in a full-size sprinter came in an older car. He then switched to another car that was a little more modern than what he started in. However, things are going to change from the dark ages as soon as he arrives at Cocopah. "I ran an older Ellis (first) and then a newer Ellis," the 18-year-old said with a laugh earlier this week. "Well, it was new for us but it was pretty much the same car." Last year his father, Brent Sexton, decided it was time for a big-time upgrade. A three-time lightning sprint car titlist (including last year's POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint championship), the family patriarch realized his youngest offspring was ready to move up and he purchased a brand new Triple X chassis. He hid the new chassis in the rafters until he figured Grant was ready. That time is now and the youngster will make his debut in the car on Friday at Cocopah. The team was headed to Perris to shake down the car for the first time on Thursday and would head straight to the Arizona speed plant after. It will be a new car on a new track for Sexton's first run of 2023. While he has seen races at Cocopah, he has never raced there, but he knows what to expect. "I have not had any practice in our new Triple X car, but we are going to test at Perris Auto Speedway tomorrow," the teen said on Wednesday. "I know it (Cocopah) has really long straightaways and a lot wider turns. So, it should be a little bit more forgiving if I do make a mistake. Hopefully, I do not find that wall because I know it will hurt. "I watch a boatload of films," the young racer continued. "I mean, I sit there on YouTube for hours and go back to the old Flo events. I try to gather anything I can by watching the leaders and others on all the tracks. How they enter the corners and how they exit the corners. Sadly, Iracing does not have any California tracks, but I do hop on the simulator as much as I can. Mainly I just want to make every main event we go to and hopefully bring a car home in one piece. Try to use patience to learn the car itself before I try and get a little more ballsy." In addition to some new venues, Sexton will be competing on several tracks where he has raced lightning sprints over the past few years. Those tracks include Perris, the Bakersfield Speedway, Mohave Valley Raceway, the Ventura Raceway, and the Santa Maria Raceway. When asked which track he was looking forward to going to, he quickly named Bakersfield because it is a quarter mile and very racy. Another part of that answer may have had to do with his thrilling victory at the "Okie Bowl" when the CLS competed on the same card as the World of Outlaws on March 24th, 2022. The teen stole the show by rim-riding through the cushion in a daring display of bravery that saw him take the lead and win with less than a foot to go in the race. Like many young drivers, Sexton had some challenges early in his lightning sprint car career. Some nights he was fast, and some nights he was not quite as fast. He did tear up some equipment along the way. Through it all, there were flashes of brilliance that were shining through. But things changed halfway through the 2019 season. The then 15-year-old only finished better than 14th one time in the first seven races of the year. Near the end of June, he began to turn things around. In six starts between June 29th and August 24th, he placed in the top 10 four times. Included was a second-place finish in the CLS race at Santa Maria on July 27th. However, the best was yet to come. On August 24, 2019, he won an open comp race at the Barona Speedway. While not surprising, it was still not expected. What happened next was shocking and totally unexpected to everyone. That is, everyone but himself. Two weeks after the Barona triumph, the family team journeyed to Missouri and the Lake Ozark Speedway for the POWRi Lightning Sprint Car Nationals. There, they met up with top drivers and cars from several states. On the first night of the two-day show, Sexton sent shockwaves through the lightning sprint car world by handily winning the main event. For a teen upstart to come to a track he had never raced on before and compete against veteran drivers, many of whom were on their home turf, and beat them, ended up being popular with fans. Surely the triumph had to be a fluke. No way could a teen repeat that performance. He then stunned everyone again by leading 23-laps before finishing second. In less than 24 hours, he went from being an unknown to being the hottest lightning sprint car driver in North America. Like everyone else, Covid pretty much ruined the 2020 season for Sexton. He came back in 2021 with a vengeance. He proved his adaptability by winning four of the last seven main events, including three in a row, in the POWRi Southwest Series. Two of his victories came while running with a wing and the other two were wingless. When the checkered flag fell at the end of the final series race, he won the championship by a comfortable 122-points. In addition to his prowess in the SWLS, he went back to Missouri and finished third in the finale. The team also journeyed to the upper Midwest for the "Minkota Nationals." Once again competing on four new tracks against veteran drivers from several states and Canada, Sexton won the opening night and placed in the top eight in all four races. 2022 was not the normal season for Sexton. Perhaps more importantly than racing, he was graduating from high school. So, that took a little away from racing with all the festivities you only get to participate in once in your life. Also, of instead running a lightning sprint car-only schedule, he was moving up to full-size sprint cars. All told, he visited victory circle four times during the year. Sexton sends out big thanks to his crew chief, 2011 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year David Bezio, Tava Lopez, Cody Griggs, Nita "Nanna" Gatlin, and his father Brent. They have all been busting their tails to get the Triple X Chassis, Johnny Motorhead 410 ready for this week's openers at Cocopah. SGR has been busy all winter getting ready for another successful year in 2023. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE MAKES A BIG IMPRESSION IN HIS FIRST-EVER CHILI BOWL MIDGET NATIONALS
(El Cajon, CA, January 17, 2022) One of open-wheel racing's brightest young stars, Braden Chiaramonte, continued to shine in his first-ever appearance at the prestigious Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. As per usual, the young driver created an incredibly positive impression this time against some of the biggest stars in racing over his two nights of action. While it was the 37th annual running of the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, it was only Chiaramonte's seventh time racing a midget. In addition, the 15-year-old phenom was teaming with car owner Pete Davis to drive his Hot Head Engine Heaters/Esslinger Engineering/RTL Traffic/AM Ortega/Spike Chassis/Esslinger midget #00B for the first time. To say the least, he was excited about the opportunity but had a realistic look at it. 325956068_703075774788836_2910710706913136485_n.jpg The Pete Davis #00B Braden Chiaramonte drove at the 2023 Chili Bowl. Cody Quarles Photo. "I really didn't have much," Chiaramonte responded when asked about his expectations going into the multi-night event. "Really just wanted to make it to a C or a B main (on Saturday). I wanted to make the A (main) but I knew that would be pretty tough in my first year. Yeah, I was pretty happy. I was kind of hoping to make to make a B main but for my first Chili BowI think it was pretty good. We made it to the C." "It was pretty crazy walking into the building with that many cars," the young driver continued. "The first practice we went out it was pretty crazy. You think you can use a lot of throttle but you really can't. The track has a lot of grip for sure and the midget really want to wheelie. You have to be really easy on the throttle. I have watched a lot of videos of the track And it is a lot different when you were in the car than what you see in those videos." After the practice, which was comprised of two four-lap sessions on the track, Chiaramonte had to wait until Friday for his race night. The youthful driver did not waste the opportunity sightseeing or partying away from the track. Instead, he watched nearly every lap of each race from Monday through Thursday. He studied the more experienced drivers and he studied the track so he would be ready for his first race on Friday. "Yeah, when I first got there, I thought you had to be really aggressive," the California racer responded when asked if watching helped. "The more you watch, you know you have to be patient but also aggressive. It is not like the Shoot-Out. If you pass one car, you're going to be sitting pretty good in points. In the shootout, you have to be passing a couple cars to be sitting pretty good." The viewing efforts paid big dividends and to say that Chiaramonte and the Davis meshed well from the start would be an understatement. The duo debuted on Friday in the third 10-lap heat race. Chiaramonte scored a hard-earned wire-to-wire win over a veteran field of drivers. "It was tough, but Pete gave me a great car," Chiaramonte told the worldwide audience watching on Flo Racing after the race when asked how he held off the field. "Big thanks to him for letting me come race my first Chili Bowl. All the guys, Grant, Shane, Cody, my dad, and my mom. I want to thank everybody for helping me out. Just keep this going and see what happens. Hopefully, start good in our qualifier, try to move forward, and just get as many points as I can and go from there." As the night continued, the competition for the 15-year-old racer who has World of Outlaws aspirations got tougher and tougher. That was evident in his 10-lap qualifier when he started and finished in fifth place. The points he accumulated In his heat race and his qualifier sent him to the B main event. Those points also earned him a pole position start. The race was 15 laps and featured 16 cars. There was literally no room for error as only the top four would transfer onto the night's A main event. Chiaramonte settled into second on the start and stayed there for the duration. The leader and Chiaramonte simply walked away from the field to earn their tickets to the main event. For the Friday night main, Chiaramonte started in the 19th spot. The 30-lapper featured racing and an abundance of crashing. The Chili Bowl and crashing seem to go hand in hand as drivers advance forward on the small track in the world-famous SageNet Center. The main lived up to the reputation with crash after crash taking place. Where Chiaramonte started the race made him susceptible to the tangles as it was going to happen in front of him. However, the young driver kept his cool and stayed out of the destruction for the duration. In the race, Chiaramonte started to advance forward just past the halfway point. He seesawed between 19th and 17th and was 18th with seven laps to go. After the last yellow flag slowed the race on lap 35, he powered the gorgeous black racecar forward to finish 14th. "It is pretty hard on the Small track," Chiaramonte said regarding the crashes on the tight track. "You try and look way ahead. You are just trying to miss everything that you can because that is more positions that you will get. If you are going backwards (by being involved in incidents), you are going to be way behind in points." Saturday saw Chiaramonte roll on the track for the first of two C main events. For a rookie at the Chili Bowl that is extremely impressive. Consider that there are 23 qualifying races on Saturday. The lowest point drivers started in a pair of O main events. Chiaramonte's Performance on Friday that saw him score 115 points was good enough to put him in one of the one of the top four qualifiers of those 23 races. It also matched him with a field of drivers who were superstars. Starting 14th in the 15-lap C main. Chiaramonte ran as high as 12th and ended up finishing 11th. It was another impressive showing for a 15-year-old rookie in a field of 20 cars of that was made up of seasoned drivers mostly seasoned veterans from around the country. A surprise bonus for the team at the Chili Bowl was the addition of popular driver Thomas "T-Mez" Meseraull from San Jose, California. While he was competing with another team at the event, Davis brought him in to coach Chiaramonte and to set up the car as well. It was a tremendous boost for the teen in the prestigious race. "Pete wanted somebody good to be coaching me and wrenching," the personable Chiaramonte stated. "Pete has known T-Mez for a while so he just called him. T-Mez said he would do it. It was a lot of help. Me or my dad to not know a lot about midget stuff. It was good going into the weekend knowing we have somebody there knowing the setup. " In five starts over two nights, Chiaramonte's poise, confidence, and driving talent shined bright. He advanced forward from his starting position in three of the races. Only once did he finish in a worse position than he started. That was a one-spot drop with that second-place finish in the Friday B main. In one other race, the Friday qualifier, he finished where he started. All told, of the 365 drivers that raced, he placed 87th overall. A very impressive performance by a rookie driver. As the full 2023 season is just around the corner, Chiaramonte and his team are making plans for a busy year. If you are interested in becoming a marketing partner with one of the most talented and personable young drivers in the sport, please feel free to call or e-mail Daniel Chiaramonte mailto:dchiaramonte@rtltraffic.com or (619) 988 7563. - NARC NEWSLINE - JANUARY 19, 2022
NARC NEWSLINE - January 19, 2023 - By Jim Allen ... There are so many things going on in motorsports that missing a single day on social media can put you in a time warp. Everything seems to happen so fast; some of it good and some of it not so good. Among the headlines during the past couple of months were life-threatening RV crashes, million-dollar to win sprint car races, a shootout in Tulsa that resembled a WWE event, high-limit races, and even some proverbial head-butting between some of the big names in sprint car racing. There is a ton going on locally also, so buckle up and take notes: STATE OF THE UNION: I attended a pair of promoter's workshops this offseason. The first was the WARPA meeting in Portland in mid-November, followed by the December RPM Promoters Workshop in Reno. The way I heard it and read the room the messages were completely different. In the Pacific Northwest, where most of the tracks lost the first third of the schedule to an ungodly number of rainouts, promoters were basically doing the happy dance. Attendance was up and growing car counts complimented the great racing. By comparison, the promoters in Portland seemed a lot less stressed than their California counterparts in Reno. While sprint car racing was pretty darn entertaining in '22, every promoter in California is actively digging to entice an additional 500-600 fans into their grandstands each week. It's the difference between good and great, but with the highest operating costs in the nation, California racetrack promoters are having to work extremely hard just to make ends meet. All are doing their best to support racers, but they also have to buy groceries - and that's a fine line to walk. Either way, everybody seems very optimistic regarding the future of 410 sprint car racing on the left coast. HOOSIER TIRES: Most in dirt track racing assumed that a pop of a champagne cork on New Year's was going to signal the end to our tire problems of '22. Better slam on the brakes on those impure thoughts because Hoosier and other tire manufacturers took to the podium to spell out the situation at the workshops. When pressed on how much of an improvement we could expect to experience (enjoy) this year, Hoosier was hard-pressed to answer just five percent. Trust me when I say this, but they are not proud of that figure, but are diligently working on improving the crisis. By the way, the sheer demand for racing tires nationally (all classes) is off the charts. This cuts both ways. It shows that motorsports and grass roots racing is growing - but it is also complicating the problem by driving demand above what can be supplied. Like most other businesses in the post-Covid world, Hoosier needs people who actually want to work, and they need an influx of raw materials. They have been forced to make dramatic increases in labor rates to recruit talent, and it is working … slowly. Speaking of raw materials, just three years ago it cost about $2000 to get an entire shipping container of raw rubber from Indonesia to Indiana. For your rubber fact of the week, four countries in Southeast Asia grow 70% of the world's rubber supply and there is a shortage which was caused in 2020 when replacement trees were not planted. Today, that exact same container of raw rubber can be yours for right around $32,000. Yes, that is a real number! You can't make that stuff up! As a result, there are more price increases coming in the near future and the ticket price of a Hoosier Right Rear racing tire is fast approaching $400 a pop. For all of the politicians who say inflation is running at six-to-eight percent, I call B.S. Hoosier also announced improvements to their manufacturing process, by reducing the number of tire SKU's from over 1300 to less than 400. Less SKU's means they can build more tires because they don't need to constantly change tire molds and tooling. In hindsight, it's seeming like something that needed to happen years ago, especially in stock car racing where some associations allow 20+ different tire configurations/compounds. Another improvement was announced a couple of weeks ago stating that dirt track racing is quickly evolving to a new national Hoosier tire. It utilizes a symmetrical tread pattern that allows sprint car teams to rotate tires to extend the life cycle. This tire will be run by anybody running a sprint car on dirt from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The new D15A rolls out in February and will replace all other Hoosier right rears in existence once they fill the pipeline. So where is all this leading? To be honest with you, I'm not really sure. Is there a possibility of events being cancelled? It could happen! Will things get better? Yes, but it will take time. All I really do know is that one of the toughest jobs in motorsports right now is your local Hoosier tire distributor rep. Nobody ever calls to find out if they're having a wonderful day. And to close out this topic, here is a little flashback to 1995. At the time, the NARC sprint cars were running a McCreary MC-3 right rear club tire. The cost … wait for it … a whopping $135 each. Even at that price, most car owners thought the price was outlandish. You can imagine what they are thinking now. We need a time machine. 2023 NARC SCHEDULE: Yes, it's aggressive, featuring twenty-four races at 15 different tracks. Among those shows are new additions at Antioch Speedway (April 29th) and Brian Crockett's Douglas County Dirtrack in Roseburg, Oregon. This is the same Douglas County track that was best known for stock cars on a paved 3/8 mile. I guess if you can "pave" a dirt track, you can "dirt" a paved track. That's exactly what Crockett managed to pull off. Test runs have been impressive and now it's the second stop on the Fastest Four Days in Motorsports. That blast of racing will be a lead up to an exciting stretch of seven NARC events in ten days. It looks something like this: Thursday, June 15th - Southern Oregon Speedway (Central Point, OR) - Thursday Night Thunder Friday, June 16th - Douglas County Dirtrack (Roseburg, OR) - Friday Night Frenzy Saturday, June 17th - Willamette Speedway (Lebanon, OR) - Sprint Car Invasion Sunday, June 18th - Grays Harbor Raceway (Elma, WA) - Timber Cup Monday, June 19th - Sleep in, golf, and head to Skagit! Tuesday, June 20th - (NON-NARC POINTS RACE) Skagit Speedway - 410 Open Show Wednesday, June 21st - Participate in a variety of fan-friendly, non-racing activities at Skagit. Alcohol will probably be involved. Thursday-Saturday, June 22-24th - Skagit Speedway - $50,000 to win Super Dirt Cup (Burlington, WA) There will be a boatload of money and some serious egos to feed during those ten days and I promise the adventure is worth the trip. Hopefully, if everything works out as planned and California crowds go from good to great this season, the Speedweek concept can return locally to the 2024 schedule.. Another NARC schedule change pertains to the Howard Kaeding Classic at Ocean Speedway. It was originally rolled out as a two-day 410 show. It's back to Taco Bravo 360's on Friday and NARC 410's on Saturday. NARC NOTES: Both nights of the May 12-13th Peter Murphy Classic will take place at Keller Auto Speedway. In the past, the event was split between the Hanford track and Thunderbowl Raceway, with the tracks swapping the $11,000 to win Saturday headliner. With Peter Murphy firmly entrenched as the promoter at Keller, it only makes sense for the same track doubleheader. It will allow race fans to settle in and enjoy the entire weekend in one campground. … Tulare will now showcase the Dennis Roth Classic as a two-day show on April 14-15th, with the winner taking home $8300 on Saturday night. Look for a possible announcement in the near future about a substantial bump to that amount. … Fire Suppression Systems are mandatory on all left coast tracks by May 1st. This includes 360 and 410's. Rock screens are now mandatory beginning at the season opener. … Dish wings are no longer allowed on the West Coast. … …Thank you to former NARC HammerDown! Rookie of the year Jim Taves for sponsoring our second heat race in 2023. The winner of the Kimo's Tropical Car Wash heat will pocket 100 bucks. … Calistoga Speedway has a heartbeat! All that needs to happen is for the locals to vote on a bond measure in March which will fund the maintenance of the facility. Tommy Hunt is optimistic. Fingers crossed. … 2023 rule books and membership forms can be downloaded at NARC410.com. NARC DRIVER NOTES: Bud Kaeding will be strapping into Mike Martin's champ car this season for a handful of races in the Midwest. It's been a decade since Bud wheeled the big cars. … Congratulations to Kalib Henry who will living the dream on more of a national stage this year. The up and comer landed a ride with Shane Liebig to run for a title at Huset Speedway in North Dakota and other big profile events including the Knoxville Nationals. Yes, California lost another great young driver, but we will still see him at some big events on occasion in the McColloch Motorsports sprint car. … Congrats to Justin Sanders and Joel Myers Jr. for representing the US with some great "down under" victories. … As per Alex Nieten's NARC Pit Personality story, Justyn Cox is the new shoe in the Bates-Hamilton Racing #42X. Look for this team to make a victory lane appearance at a track near you. … Here is something new out of the Tarlton Motorsports camp. The team is NOT planning to run a permanent driver during the 2023 season. Crew chief Drew Warner stated the team will utilize a "best driver available" approach. They will be chasing the NARC car owner championship. OTHER STUFF: Watched a WWE event and a midget race broke out. Yup, that's the best way to describe the Tulsa Shootout where more than 100 flips were matched with an equal number of punches. … It sure is good for our California egos by how well our drivers collectively performed at the Chili Bowl. At least there is some positive to come out of this state. … There is a new scoring tower/announcers booth/business center being constructed at Skagit Speedway. The original 1970-vintage tower was torn down as the improvements continue at the facility. … It's hard not to get excited about the first ever $1 million to win sprint car show at Eldora. Fans went nuts on social media when they heard the news. Unfortunately, many thought this payout was going to happen with the standard $50 World of Outlaw ticket price. You can't pay that much money without securing a sizeable increase at the front gate. It's business economics 101. Tickets are expected to be in the $150+ range. … Glad to see that the World of Outlaws and Kyle Larson's High Limit Series worked out their differences. By the way, the High Limit race at Tulare was moved to March 21st. … Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bill Andreetta of Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats, our trophy dash sponsor. Bill was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment in Arizona. … There will be plenty of opportunities to race 410 sprint cars on the West Coast. In addition to our schedule, Keller Auto Speedway has three 410 stand-alone shows - with a 360 twist! Peter Murphy has been actively envisioning some unique twist and turns for these 20-car main events, where 360's will be given the opportunity to start up front. It will feature a standard NARC payoff. I don't have all of the details yet, but a press release will roll out soon. … And finally … It's scary how one's life can change in a split-second. Our thoughts and prayers are still with the Bloomfield family. Their RV was crushed by an intoxicated driver as they were returning home from a 360 race in Merced before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Shannon Bloomfield took the full force of accident, resulting in an extensive list of broken bones and other injuries that seem impossible to comprehend. She is lucky to be alive. Dustin's heartfelt posts on Facebook during the ordeal were enough to make grown men cry. Shannon faces a substantial recovery process - one I'm sure she will conquer - and it will be an honor to see her at a NARC event in the near future. Amen! … We've only got a couple of months until the 2023 Mini-Gold Cup NARC season opener in Chico. In the meantime, you can find everything NARC on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok and NARC410.com. Don't miss a single day! Coming to you live from Auburn, CA. See ya!

- TOMMY DUNKEL PLACED 13TH IN TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX SPRINT CAR MAIN - CHILI BOWL NEXT
(Menifee, CA, December 21, 2022) At the 81st Annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway on November 26th, Menifee, California's Tommy Dunkel caught the eyes of many in the near-sellout crowd when he moved up from 22nd to finish 13th in the sprint car main event. Only two other drivers advanced more than Dunkel in the 30-lap race on the famous 1/5 mile track located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. image_50802177.JPG Tommy Dunkel on his way to a 13th place finish in the Turkey Night Sprint Car main. A.J. Johnson photo. To say that Dunkel's performance was a surprise may have been an understatement. After all, it was only his fourth race since 2016. His last outing before Turkey Night took place on the same Ventura track at the end of October when he placed third in the VRA main event. However, the Turkey Night Grand Prix was a whole different story. The talent-laden field was comprised of 49 drivers from throughout the country. In addition, the affable racer was starting in the next to last row in the 23-car lineup. When you start that far back on the tight quarters of the Ventura Raceway, drivers are going to see some chaos in front of them. They hope they are not part of the free for all crashes that occasionally happen. Dunkel had two very close calls during the race. Fortunately, he deftly steered through both. The first of those instances came on the back straightaway on the second circuit. Five cars tangled in front of the immaculate Inland Rigging white #17 car. He went to the wide side of the track and narrowly missed being sucked into the bedlam. With a packed house looking on at the track and thousands more around the world watching live on Flo Racing, Dunkel was still near the back of the field when the action resumed with 28-laps to go. He was 17th by the end of lap three and progressed one position higher on lap seven. Two go-rounds later, Dunkel's reflexes were tested again. This time going into turn three, a car flipped wildly in front of him. Dunkel stayed glued to the bottom of the racetrack and was seemingly out of trouble. That is until a driver on the wide line had to take evasive action to avoid the flipping car. That driver flew to the bottom and banged wheels with Dunkel. Driving like a seasoned veteran, Dunkel stayed on the throttle and powered out of the potential mishap. "There were a few close calls and real estate is limited at Ventura," Dunkel commented after. "It is really tricky. I tried to not let the close calls rattle me. I tried to focus on running a good race and continuing to move forward. There were a lot of really fast guys there and I just tried to stay focused and hit my marks. It worked out well." Once the race resumed, Dunkel managed to stay away from the chaos and kept a steady pace. It paid dividends! He moved up to the 15th spot on lap 19. Two circuits later he nabbed one more spot. He stayed in 14th until the last lap when he took another step forward and came home with a hard-earned 13th-place finish. "Growing up knowing what the Turkey Night Grand Prix meant, you hoped to be a part of it," Dunkel said. "Just to make the show was a milestone for me. I just kind of went to get some good laps in for 2023. To do what we did in just making the main and then coming from 22nd up to 13th felt good. A great way to cap the season for me." At the previous night's preliminary, Dunkel placed fifth in his 10-lap heat race and was eighth in his 12-lap qualifier. That placed him 33rd in points in the stellar 49-car field. Just to get into the finale, he had to perform well in his B main on Saturday night. The cards were stacked against the friendly driver in that brief 12-lap race. He was starting in the 11th position and he had to finish at least sixth or his Turkey Night Grand Prix was over. In what would prove to be the story of his night, he moved forward. He put his Shaver-powered Maxim Chassis through its paces and moved forward the required five spots to capture the sixth-place position and book his ticket into the biggest race of his life. While Christmas and New Year are just around the corner, another holiday is coming up for racers from around the globe. The second week of January will be the 37th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The annual exhibition of speed and ability draws drivers from several different disciplines of racing including NASCAR, Indy Cars, World of Outlaws, NHRA Drag Racing, and of course midgets and sprint cars. Thus far more than 300 drivers have pre-entered the race and one of them is Tommy Dunkel. Full details on his participation in another one of racing's "Crown Jewels" will be published after the holidays. Dunkel would like to thank the following for making his racing efforts possible. Inland Rigging, Dunkel Farms, United Asset Sales, and Osborne Speed & Machine. If you or your company would like to join him for a full year of USAC Sprint Car competition in 2023, please give him a call or send an email to 951-901-5082 or mailto:TomDunkel@inlandrigging.com.

- BRODY ROA COMPLETED HIS 2022 SEASON AT THE TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX
(Cypress, CA, December 7, 2022) Nearly eleven months after it started, Brody Roa finished his 2022 racing season in the 81st annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway. Contesting the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series portion of the program in Jayson May's pretty #8M sprint car, the Garden Grove, California driver ended up finishing 17th in the 30-lap main event due to some late-race bad luck. 310350912_10166729824325201_6527411594461310400_n.jpg Brody Roa's Turkey Night Grand Prix ride. May photo. The two-night program featured heat races, qualifiers, and a dash for the sprint cars on Friday night. An outstanding field of 49 entries showed up for the event. Drivers did not qualify but rather drew for positions in the Friday night heat races. Roa pulled a number that placed him in the second heat race on the famous 1/5-of-a-mile clay oval. The 31-year-old started in the fourth position in his heat race. By the end of the opening go around he was second and was applying immediate heat to the leader. The veteran racer kept the pressure up all the way to the Kris Kornder checkered flag but he had to settle for second. The finish placed him on the outside of row number one for his 12-lap qualifier. From there, he steered the #8M into the lead and proceeded to stay out front every inch of the way. Two races down and everything was working to perfection. However, that was about to change. With the heat and qualifiers out of the way, there was only one thing left for Roa on the night. That was the 15-lap dash for the top 10 drivers in points after the heat races and the qualifiers. The way they finished the dash would be the way they started the main event straight up. Roa was on the outside of the second row in fourth for the start. He stayed in that position over the first two circuits before slipping back to fifth on lap three. On lap nine Roa moved back to the 4th place spot. That pass moved him up a full row in Saturday's main if he could stay there. Everything went smoothly until lap 12. Entering turn three, the second-place car clipped one of the huge tires protecting the end of the crashwall at the pit entrance. That caused the car to spin and it also kicked the tire onto the track. The third-place driver, Roa's teammate Chase Johnson, hit the tire and turned over. Roa, who was close behind, had nowhere to go and slid into the mess. For good measure, another car sailed into Roa and the red flag came out. For all intents and purposes, it looked like Roa was done for the night. In fact, he climbed out of his car and took off his helmet. But after a closer look, he realized his car was not damaged as much as he thought. The veteran racer pushed his helmet back on, climbed back in the car, and bumped off for the restart. By that time there were only seven cars left in the race. That meant Roa had to restart at the back in seventh. In the remaining laps, he passed one car to finish sixth and start one spot closer to the front in Saturday's championship main event. Saturday night Roa and his fellow competitors were greeted by a near-capacity crowd at one of America's most popular dirt tracks. In addition to the packed house, the race was also seen by thousands more around the world on Flo Racing. Being that he finished sixth in points the previous night, Roa did not have to race in any of the preliminaries. He was seeded right into the 30-lap finale and would start on the outside of the third row in May's gorgeous #8M. At the drop of the Chris Kornder green flag, Roa immediately went on the attack. However, the green flag was short-lived as the caution came out on the second circuit. For the restart, Roa was in fifth and he dogged the fourth-place car for the first 1/3 of the race. By lap 20, he had slipped back to seventh. As the race reached the waning laps, he was still in seventh, but with an engine issue and an overzealous driver clobbering him from behind, Roa was knocked from the action with two laps to go. He ended up 17th. The Ventura result was not the way "The Pride of Garden Grove" wanted to conclude the season but he did have a very good year. He had 15 top-10 finishes and 11 of those were in the top five. Despite not running the full USAC/CRA schedule, Roa's total of three wins was second-best on the circuit and he finished sixth in points. Highlights of the year included his win at Mohave Valley after he started 11th in the main event. At Santa Maria, he drove to the win in the 410 race in May's 360 powered rocketship. He also had a win in May's car in a USAC West Coast Series race at Ventura. In addition to his non-wing endeavors, Roa, also qualified for his first-ever World of Outlaws main event at Perris on March 26th. It was only his second-ever race in the legendary series. The first came 24 hours earlier at Bakersfield. While the 2022 season just ended, 2023 will kick off in just five weeks in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Chili Bowl. The sprint car season will kick off two weeks after that at the Cocopah Speedway in Arizona. In between now and Cocopah, the team will be working on cars, ordering parts, and exploring marketing opportunities with potential partners. - NARC 2023 SCHEDULE: CALIFORNIA STAPLES, HUGE NORTHWEST SWING HIGHLIGHT CAMPAIGN
(12/5/2022) Sacramento, CA… The NARC 410 Sprint Cars are set for another busy campaign in 2023 with the unveiling of a 24-race schedule for the West Coast's best drivers and teams as the series enters its 63rd season of racing. For the second straight year NARC will visit all three states that comprise the West Coast at tracks as far south as Bakersfield and all the way up north nearly to the Canadian border. Overall, 13 different facilities are on the calendar. Teams will compete for more than $800,000 in prize money throughout the entirety of the schedule, plus another $50,000 in product and cash awards up for grabs. Shares of a lucrative championship points fund will also be on the line. March-ing Into Chico The season opener will see the revitalization of a historic, fan-favorite race. On March 18th the series kicks off the 2023 campaign with the return of Mini Gold Cup at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway. Originally starting in 1987, the Mini Gold Cup has been a spring staple in California but took a brief hiatus after the 2019 edition. Throughout its history, the event has alternated between NARC and World of Outlaws sanctioning. With the 2023 edition being a NARC event, it again gives locals a shot at Mini Gold Cup glory and placing their name alongside some legends of sprint car racing. The Classics The state of California has established a handful of "Classic" races that have become fan-favorites, and per usual some of those coveted events have found a home on the NARC schedule. The first of five Classics on the calendar is on the second weekend of April and will be the third edition of the Anthony Simone Classic at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford on April 8th. The night honors the versatile driver known as "Mr. Excitement" and offers a $10,000 payday to the winner. The very next weekend will be another lucrative event as Tulare's Thunderbowl Raceway will host the second Dennis Roth Classic. As a nod to Roth's iconic car, the feature winner will again be awarded $8,300. The Roth Classic has grown by a day for 2023 and will showcase two nights of racing on April 14th and 15th with the winner of the latter taking home the big check. The wildly popular Peter Murphy Classic is set for May 12th and 13th and will take place at the site of the two aforementioned Classics. Night one will be at Thunderbowl Raceway with Keller Auto Speedway taking center stage for the $11,000 to win finale. Like last year, NARC will be joined by the Sprint Car Challenge Tour both nights. Another one of the most anticipated races of the campaign can be found in July as the Howard Kaeding Classic continues as a summertime staple. Unlike recent years, the event will now feature two nights of the NARC 410 Sprint Cars at Ocean Speedway as opposed to 410s only partaking on the final night. "The HK" is slated for July 14th and 15th. On August 26th the series heads to Stockton Dirt Track for the Champions Classic. After a cancellation this year due to the tire shortage, teams will be eager for its return and to fight for a $6,000 payday by visiting victory lane. A Busy Road To Dirt Cup For the second straight year NARC will hit the Road to Dirt Cup, but this year's edition will include a few more stops and double as the Fastest Four Days in Motorsports. In lieu of making a pair of trips to the Pacific Northwest like in 2022, the series will make one extended journey to make logistics easier on the teams. The four straight nights of action begins on Thursday, June 15th at Central Point, Oregon's Southern Oregon Speedway. The next night it's up to Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg, Oregon, a track that was converted from pavement to dirt over the off-season under the new promotional leadership of Roseburg Racing Promotions. Night three is a visit to Lebanon, Oregon's Willamette Speedway, where Justin Sanders set a new track record when NARC invaded last year. And the Road to Dirt Cup meets an end at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington on June 18th. Overall, the trip promises to provide four fantastic nights of racing at four different facilities and will feature a special bonus to any driver that can sweep all four events. Dirt Cup After a wildly successful 2022 Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup, NARC will again support the West Coast crown jewel as it enters its second year of a return to 410 sprint cars at Burlington, Washington's Skagit Speedway. The Dirt Cup will again feature a trio of nights (June 22nd - 24th) with the final night's winner taking home a whopping $50,000. Last year the race attracted more than 40 competitors as promoters Peter Murphy and Kevin Rudeen restored a ton of prestige to one of the most historic events on the left-coast. *On Tuesday, June 20th there will be a Dirt Cup Tune-Up race at Skagit, but it will not be a NARC event. Making History A pair of historic races with winners lists that read like a California Hall of Fame will again be a part of the NARC campaign with many drivers hungry to add their names in one of those coveted slots. The 32nd Annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial Race will occur on June 3rd at the scenic Placerville Speedway, marking the third straight year the El Dorado County track has hosted one of the most prestigious races in California. With lap money and other awards, this show features one of the largest one-day purses of the year. The season finale will see a historical race enter another decade of existence as Stockton Dirt Track hosts the 40th Tribute to Gary Patterson on November 4th. And More A few other racetracks and events help complete the 2023 schedule. Petaluma Speedway has a pair of dates with the Salute to First Responders set for May 20th and the Salute to Baylands Raceway Park scheduled for July 8th. The second race of the season will be the fourth annual Asparagus Cup on April 1st at Stockton Dirt Track with the SCCT joining the card. Silver Dollar Speedway's second and final NARC race of 2023 will be on April 29th as the series will again partake in the David Tarter Memorial. The fourth edition of the Morrie Williams Memorial will be run on September 30th at Keller Auto Speedway. The unique event will again showcase a twin-20 lap features to conclude the evening. NARC will make its lone trip to The Dirt Track at Kern County Raceway Park on October 28th for the Halloween Spectacular. - First Look: 2023 Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Entry List Climbs Beyond 100 Entries
Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (November 30, 2022) Making its annual debut once the list of Golden Driller hopefuls surpasses the century mark, the first round of entries into the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire has been posted with 116 entries ready to chase history. Opening November 9, the first entry received was from Trifecta Motorsports for driver, Kyle Jones. The 2023 event marks the ninth time the Kennedale, Texas, shoe will attempt the Chili Bowl Nationals. During his 2022 run, Kyle transferred from a C-Feature and ran to a 13th-place finish in Saturday's first Dave.com B-Feature. With two past champions, 18 A-Feature starters, and 27 event rookies in the field already, the list, as always, is the most diverse in all of racing. Returning to defend his 2022 title, Nevada native turned Oklahoma resident Tanner Thorson will do so in his own equipment. Returning to his No. 88, the 13-time USAC National Midget winner was recently on track during the 81st running of the ARP Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura Raceway, in which he raced from 11th to lead late in the race before a spin relegated him to a 19th place finish. The other champion on the list is none other than Sammy Swindell. The most prolific name in Chili Bowl history, the five-time champion will make his 33rd appearance atop Tulsa clay this January. Having made the cut in 25 A-Features, Sammy's record includes 13 podiums, 14 top-five, and 17 top-ten finishes on Saturday night. While not as busy, Sammy was on track 23 times during the 2022 season with runs against the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, Tezos All-Star Circuit of Champions, and the American Sprint Car Series. While it is always hard to call most on the list of Chili Bowl first-timers by the title of "Rookie," the title will just have to due. Just don't tell Jacob Allen that. Driver of the Shark Racing No. 1A with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, the driver from Hanover, Penn. will be behind the wheel of a Cruz Pedregon-owned entry. Bringing east and west together, the Pedregon Racing stable rounds out with event rookie Kalib Henry, who recently signed on with car owner Shane Liebig for the 2023 season. Another quick dive into the list of rookies and one name will stand out for anyone who follows racing. Andretti. Joining the field in 2023, Indiana's Adam Andretti will take on the Chili Bowl for Jeff Johnson Racing. Competing in a myriad of divisions during his career, the younger brother of the late John Andretti races for Peterson Racing in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli in the TA2 class. - BRODY ROA WRAPS UP THE 2022 CAMPAIGN IN THE TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX AT VENTURA
(Cypress, CA, November 25, 2022) Southern California racing veteran Brody Roa will close out another successful season tonight and Saturday, November 25th and 26th, in the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series at the 81st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway. The veteran driver will be back behind the wheel of Jayson May's gorgeous #8M sprint car that has already carried him to a pair of victories in 2022. 297879254_2204237209743457_8079382424926505894_n.jpg Brody Roa in Jayson May's #8M. SCRAFAN.COM Photo. Roa's prowess at Ventura and in May's car makes him one of the favorites in this week's race. In two appearances at the beach side track in 2022, he has a win and a second-place finish. Driving his own #91R car in a USAC/CRA race on June 11th, Roa ended up second in the main event. He was clearly the fastest car on the track, but on the night, the track was one lane on the bottom. Rather than wreck the first-place car and possibly take himself out as well, Roa wisely settled for second. Two months later, he steered May's car to the USAC West Coast Series main event win on the tiny, challenging oval that is located a stone's throw away from the breaking surf of the Pacific Ocean. After returning from Indiana Sprint week, Roa jumped into May's 360 and led every inch of the way in the USAC/CRA 410 race at the grand re-opening of the Santa Maria Raceway on August 6th. His other 2022 appearances in May's equipment came in early February in a pair of CAS/ASCS events at the Central Arizona Speedway. The first night Roa had the main event in the bag, but the competition was plagued by an exorbitant amount of yellow flags and Roa ran out of fuel near the end of the race. He restarted at the rear and came back through the field to finish fifth. Twenty-four hours later he placed second on the same track. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. each day at Ventura with cars on the track at 3:15. The sprint cars will have heats and a dash for cash on Friday. On Saturday, they will have preliminary main events and a $3,000.00 to win A main. The USAC National Midgets will join the action with practice on Friday. On Saturday, the midgets will qualify, contest preliminaries, and finish the night with the historic 98-lap main event. The Ventura Raceway is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/ and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. Friday night adult tickets are $22.00. Seniors, military, and students get in for $18.00, and it is free for kids under 12 on Friday. On Saturday, reserved seats are $45.00 for those 13 and older. Reserved seats for those 12 and under are $25.00. General admission tickets are $35.00. Roa comes into the event after ending the 410 sprint car portion of his 2022 season at the 26th running of the Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway. The first night of the Ovals saw the Garden Grove, California racecar chauffeur being the most competitive of the local drivers at the race on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay Oval. In qualifying in the stellar 40-car field that showed up for the last USAC National and USAC/CRA race of 2022, Roa only managed to qualify 18th fastest. He shrugged off the time trials result with a convincing win in the first heat race of the three-day event. For the 30-lap main, Roa, 31 started in the ninth spot. Racing in the toughest field on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval in 2022, the veteran driver was the highest-running USAC/CRA driver in the field. He was just behind the USAC National Series regulars in the early part of the race. As the laps dwindled down, he began to infiltrate the invaders and advance toward the front of the pack. Running on the top, which had an unforgiving cushion, he was in the sixth spot with two laps to go when the cushion bit him and sent the #91R careening into the wall. Roa looked at the car, saw little damage, and climbed back in. He restarted at the back and ended up 16th. On the second night at the Ovals, Roa qualified 22nd fastest. He backed that up with a third-place finish in his heat race. That gave him his second straight ticket into the 30-lap main event. The veteran driver started that race in 20th and finished 17th. The tangle with the cushion on Thursday, combined with the 17th place finish on Friday, meant that Roa would have to qualify again on Saturday and make it to the main event through his heat race or the B main. The affable racing star was the ninth-quickest qualifier and placed third in his heat. That automatically sent him into the A main for the third consecutive night. For the 40-lap championship main event, Roa started in the 10th place spot and was 11th when the checkered flag ended the contest and the 410 season. That was the best performance by a USAC/CRA driver in the race. Roa and the team want to thank the following sponsors for making the 2022 season possible. HD Industries, Burris Racing, Sander Engineering, Inland Rigging, Caltrol, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, Competition Suspension, ALR Virtual Services, K-1 Race Gear, Molecule, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. In addition, the veteran driver offers thanks to RDM Mechanics, Fastenal, KC Keen Concrete, Coopers Propane, Ten West Towing, Ten West Environmental, TJM Distribution, and Westco International for sponsoring May's #8M. If you or your company would like to jump on board and receive recognition as a team partner throughout 2023, please give the two-time USAC champion racer a phone call or drop him a note at the contact information on the top of this release. - Austin Hartmann treasures lessons learned, progress made during rookie IRA 410 Sprint Car Series season
(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) November 15, 2022 - With just two seasons of prior Sprint Car racing experience under their collective belts coming into the 2022 campaign, Austin Hartmann and the members of the Plymouth, Wis.-based 87A Hartmann Racing Team put their talents to the test in a big way during their rookie campaign traveling to 410 Sprint Car races throughout the Midwest with the regional touring Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series. A five-and-a-half-month 2022 journey competing against many of the nation's top 410 Sprint Car drivers at 13 different tracks in three states produced a garden variety of on-track results, along with a host of valuable learning experiences, will-testing challenges and thrilling highlights. The 87A Hartmann Racing team launched its new racing adventure at the Bumper to Bumper IRA 410 Sprint Car Series 2022 season opener at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Saturday, April 23. Utilizing a calm, cool and collected approach in negotiating a lightning fast and tricky track surface, Hartmann brought his Bennett Transport Inc.-sponsored 87A Hartmann Racing machine home to an 18th place finish after starting 25th in the first 30-lap A main of his rookie season with the Bumper to Bumper IRA 410 Sprint Car Series. Hartmann's first trek to Sycamore Speedway in Maple Park, Ill. on Saturday, May 7 resulted in his second straight 18th-place A-main showing, as he turned in another smooth and consistent run after rolling off 21st in the 30-lap IRA main event. Hartmann returned to the friendly confines of his hometown track - The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. - for the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions - Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Shootout on Saturday, May 21. With a large contingent of extra local supporters on hand to wish him well during the third race of his rookie IRA 410 Sprint Car Series season, Hartmann finished the night with a 14th place showing in the All Stars-IRA B Main among a stellar field of 36 All Stars-IRA competitors. Hartmann's scheduled appearance with the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions and Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Cars at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. on Sunday, May 22 was hounded by mechanical maladies as the 87A car failed to get up to speed to register a qualifying time or compete in heat race or B Main competition due to a magneto issue. On Saturday, May 28, Hartmann and the 87A Hartmann Racing team made the long trek to Northwest Wisconsin for the IRA's return to the third-mile semi-banked Rice Lake Speedway for the first time in several years. Hartmann opened the night by qualifying 12th in the 20-car field with a lap of 14.181 seconds. After lining up the pole of the third eight-lap IRA heat race, Hartmann placed fourth in the race to earn the 12th starting spot in the 30-lap main event. The third-year Plymouth, Wis. Sprint Car driver drove a steady race in just his third IRA A main in a 410 Sprint Car en route to an IRA career-best 13th place showing. On Sunday, May 29 at one of Hartmann's favorite tracks - 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wis. - the 2020 Midwest Sprint Car Association and Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car Rookie of the Year Award winner was quick out of the box as he turned in the 11th fastest qualifying lap in the 27-car field with a lap of 11.318 seconds. After lining up on the pole of the second eight-lap IRA heat race, Hartmann placed fourth to earn a direct transfer spot to the A main and his first-career berth in the IRA dash field. After drawing the pole for the second four-lap IRA dash, Hartmann placed fourth to gain the eighth starting spot in the 30-lap IRA main event, during which he came home 24th. On Saturday, June 11, Hartmann and the 87A Hartmann Racing team made the haul south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border to Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Ill. for the 12th annual $6,000-to-win co-sanctioned IRA-Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) Bill Waite Jr. Memorial Classic, which attracted a stout field of 36 entries. After starting fourth in the 12-lap B main, Hartmann was running seventh when a two-car spin brought out the yellow flag on lap 10. With the top-four finishers earning spots in the A main, Hartmann restarted fifth and pressured the fourth-place car of Dave Uttech for the final transfer position over the final two laps before settling for fifth to fall just short of advancing to the A-main event. With fast and uneven track conditions providing an extra challenge in the team's second appearance of the 2022 season at Angell Park Speedway, Hartmann drove a steady race to advance from his 15th starting position to come home with an IRA career-best 11th place finish in the 30-lap A-main event on Sunday, June 12. In his NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Series debut on Friday, June 17, Hartmann qualified 22nd in the 33-car field with a lap of 11.528 seconds on the lightning-fast, high-banked, third-mile Beaver Dam Raceway clay oval. After lining up sixth in the second World of Outlaws heat race, Hartmann's maiden voyage with the WoO was short-lived as contact with J.J. Hickle as the green flag dropped resulted in heavy damage to his Kristine Hartmann of Pleasant View Realty-sponsored machine, which forced the team to retire from the race and scratch for the remainder of the event. Thanks to some late-night repair work from Scotty Neitzel and Rick Lemanski of R&H Enterprises, Hartmann returned to action for the second half of the World of Outlaws doubleheader weekend at Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday, June 18. After starting and finishing eighth in the first eight-lap WoO heat race, Hartmann rolled off fifth in the 12-lap Last Chance Showdown needing to finish in the top six to advance to the 40-lap main event. Hartmann ran fifth in the opening laps of the Last Chance Showdown before Josh Schneiderman slipped past to shuffle him back to sixth. He then ran smooth and consistent laps over the second half of the race to hold off Matt Vandevere and secure a starting berth in his first career World of Outlaws A main. With the big picture of completing the remainder of his rookie 410 Sprint Car season in mind, Hartmann pulled off early in the 40-lap main event and was credited with a 22nd place finish. With the NASCAR Cup Series set to visit Road America just at nearby Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, The Plymouth Dirt Track was buzzing for a special weeknight all-Sprint Car spectacular with a full house of fans packing the grandstand and a solid field of 28 IRA Sprint Cars checked in to battle for the $5,000-to-win Road America Challenge top prize on Thursday, June 30. After starting 24th in the 24-car IRA A-main lineup, Hartmann ran a smooth and consistent race as he managed to dodge several mishaps, which produced a lengthy event filled with six caution/red flag periods and ensuing restarts. In the closing stages of the race, Hartmann engaged in a duel with fellow IRA rookie competitor Tyler Tischendorf before finishing 19th in the event. On Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, Hartmann and the 87A Hartmann Racing team made the 640-mile trek to River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota for an IRA-NOSA co-sanctioned doubleheader weekend. With strong fields of over 30 cars on hand both nights, Hartmann qualified for both main events, placing 19th in the A main on Friday, July 15 and 23rd in the main event on Saturday, July 16. On Friday, July 22 at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour, Wis., Hartmann fought a power-steering issue to notch a 17th place finish in the 30-lap IRA A main. The Hartmann 87A team then made their first trip to the big, wide half-mile Langlade County Speedway in Antigo, Wis. on Friday, July 29 where Hartmann suffered a rear-end failure in the heat race before rallying to earn hard-charger honors with a 19th to 14th place run in the caution-free A main. The following night saw the team travel back home for its third appearance of the season at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, July 30. With 22 IRA 410 Sprint Cars on hand, Hartmann turned in his best qualifying effort of the 2022 season, as he timed in third with a lap of 11.769 seconds around the third-mile clay oval. After lining up fourth in the third eight-lap heat race, Hartmann finished fourth to advance to his second IRA dash of the 2022 campaign. The third-year Sprint Car racer started and finished fifth in the second four-lap IRA dash to secure the 10th starting spot in the 30-lap main event. Hartmann worked primarily the low groove during the majority of the A-main en route to a strong 12th place main event showing. Following two weekends off from competition, Hartmann returned to action with the IRA 410 Sprint Car Series for the Roger Iles Tribute event at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wis. on Saturday, Aug. 20 where he finished 20th after starting 14th in the 36-lap A main. After qualifying seventh and earning his third IRA dash appearance of the 2022 campaign, Hartmann started ninth and tallied a 15th place finish in the 30-lap IRA Corn Fest A main at Angell Park Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 21. The Founders Night IRA event at Wilmot Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 27 saw Hartmann qualify 11th in the 27-car field and earn his first career IRA heat race victory to lock himself into his fourth IRA dash of the 2022 season. After rolling off 10th in the 25-lap main event, Hartmann was running seventh in the early going when he spun in turn two after racing in close quarters with Jeremy Schultz. Hartmann rebounded after restarting 20th to earn a 16th place showing. Hartmann opened a tripleheader IRA weekend with a 12th place A-main finish after starting 16th in the 20-lap Harry Neitzel Tribute Race at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Friday, Sept. 2. One night later, Hartmann racked up his first-career IRA fast qualifier award as he topped the 31-car field with a lap of 11.461 seconds around his hometown track. After making his fifth IRA dash appearance of the 2022 season, Hartmann started fifth in the 30-lap A main. Hartmann was running eighth when contact with Kyle Schuett shortly after a lap 23 restart, sent him flipping wildly into the turn one fence. Although Hartmann emerged from his battered machine uninjured, the 87A machine suffered extensive damage as he was scored with a 22nd place finish. One night later, Hartmann entered the final event of the three-race IRA weekend behind the wheel of Al Schlafer's 360 Sprint Car at 141 Speedway where he posted a 19th place finish in the 30-lap A main. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Hartmann ventured west to make his first appearance at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis. for the IRA's prestigious $6,000-to-win Jerry Richert Memorial, which drew a stellar field of 30 competitors. Hartmann earned his first career IRA B Main victory to earn the 19th starting spot in the 30-lap A main where he placed 21st. Hartmann put together his best overall performance of the 2022 season at the IRA Scott Semmelmann Memorial at Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 17. After qualifying 10th, Hartmann advanced to his sixth IRA dash of the 2022 campaign to nail down the eighth starting spot in the 30-lap main event where he held strong on the lightning-fast track surface to secure an IRA career-best sixth place A-main finish. Hartmann turned in a 14th place A-main finish in the 20-lap IRA Checkered Flag Classic at the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Friday, Sept. 23. The Hartmann 87A team then capped off the 2022 IRA season with the Wisconsin Sprint Car Championships at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, Sept. 24. With 24 IRA 410 Sprint Cars on hand, Hartmann began the night by qualifying 11th with a lap of 11.718 seconds around the ultra-fast and tacky third-mile clay oval. Hartmann lined up on the pole position of the second eight-lap IRA heat race. However, a jumbled start was waived off by track officials before Hartmann spun in turn two while trying to slow down his machine. The spin resulted in contact with another car and front-end damage to his 87A car, which caused him to retire from the race with an eighth place showing. After making the necessary repairs, Hartmann started 21st in the 30-lap IRA main event, staying out of trouble throughout en route to a 19th place finish. Hartmann capped his rookie season of Bumper to Bumper IRA 410 Sprint Car Series competition 10th in the final point standings. In 26 events, including 24 IRA races, Hartmann tallied one top-10, eight top-15 and 17 top-20 A-main showings in 22 A-main appearances. In addition, Hartmann posted one heat race victory, one B-main triumph, one fast qualifier award and six dash appearances during his rookie IRA campaign. "I would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters who made it possible for me to race a 410 Sprint Car with the IRA Series during the 2022 season, especially Kristine Hartmann of Pleasant View Realty and Andrew Shufflebotham of Shufflebotham Tree Service " Hartmann said. "I would also like to thank all of the members of our pit crew, who did so much to help out and keep us racing all season long. "As far as the racing goes, we definitely learned a lot during the course of the season that will help us during the 2023 season," he said. - SEXTON GATLIN RACING CLOSES THE 2022 LIGHTNING SPRINT SEASON WITH FOUR RACES IN FIVE DAYS THIS WEEK
(Lakeside, CA, November 14, 2022) Lakeside, California-based Sexton Gatlin Racing will close the lightning sprint car portion of its 2022 season this week when it journeys to Central and Northern California to compete at the Bakersfield and the Placerville Speedways. All told, the four-driver effort will race four times in the space of five days. The team's second stop at the Bakersfield Speedway this year for the "6th Annual Western States Lightning Sprints Championship" will be on Tuesday, November 15th. Driving SGR cars that night will be newly crowned Lucas Oil POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Brent Sexton, and his son Grant. SGR kicked off the 2022 Bakersfield Speedway season on May 25th when the California Lightning Sprint Car Series appeared worldwide on the internet with the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. In that one, then-17-year-old Grant thrilled the crowd with a wild last-lap rim ride that saw him take the victory leading only the last six feet in a thrilling photo finish. Brent ended up eighth. Dalton Sexton, Brent's 19-year-old son, suffered electrical problems in that race and dropped out early. He finished 17th. Tuesday's race will be the team's first appearance on the Kern County oval since March. After Tuesday's show, the drivers will use Wednesday as a travel day to Northern California's Placerville Speedway for three nights of racing in the "Hangtown 100." Dalton will join his dad and brother at Placerville as will San Diego's A.J. Bender who will reunite SGR after a successful run with them last November. Last year at Bakersfield's "5th Annual Western States Lightning Sprints Championship," Bender took the win driving for SGR. Grant came home sixth and Brent finished 22nd after leaving the race early with mechanical issues. Last year at the three nights of Hangtown, Bender finished second all three nights. Grant recorded finishes of 4th, 16th, and 18th. Brent placed 9th, 12th, and 18th. Dalton placed 12th in the B main at the opener and 19th on the second night after a crash in the A-main. He did not start on Saturday. The Tuesday night show at Bakersfield will be a winged race. All three nights at Placerville will be wingless. The car Bender is driving at Placerville is for sale. It is powered by a 2020 Suzuki 1000. Interested parties can contact Brent Sexton at the number at the top of this release for details.
