- ANTIOCH SPEEDWAY OPEN WHEEL OCTOBERFEST AWAITS NARC SPRINT CARS
(10/7/25 - Andrew Kunas) Antioch, CA ... The closing stretch of the 2025 NARC King of the West sprint car season continues this Saturday (October 11th) with the tour's second visit of the year to Antioch Speedway for the Open Wheel Octoberfest. Things have tightened up in the point standings with just three races remaining. Former series champion D.J. Netto of Hanford continues to lead in pursuit of his second NARC championship but is now holding on by a thread. Falling back to finish ninth in last Saturday's event at Thunderbowl Raceway, combined with Oroville's Sean Becker rising late to finish second, resulted in Netto's lead over Becker shrinking to just seven points. Saturday's race ironically comes at the same track where the two battled for the lead in May's Contra Costa County Clash. Becker had taken the lead, but hard racing resulted in contact between the two and Becker crashed out, and Netto went on to win his second race of the season. That was also Netto's last victory this season. Becker is winless but has been competitive all season. With the two in a close points battle with just a few races remaining, so much is on the line Saturday. Campbell's Bud Kaeding, a winner in the Johnny Key Classic in August, continues to lurk in third place in the standings, sitting a mere 21 points out of the lead. A bad night for Netto and/or Becker could potentially put Kaeding in the thick of things as well. WHO TO WATCH Tim Kaeding and the Williams Motorsports No. 0 team is expected to run the remaining NARC races this season. One of the most exciting drivers to ever come out of California, the future Hall of Famer has one NARC win to his credit this season, coming in July at Petaluma Speedway. Kaeding struggled in qualifying last Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway, but turned in a strong main event run, coming from 12th to finish fifth. Kaeding and the Zero Heroes will look to get back in the win column on Saturday. Fresno's Mariah Ede, in her first year racing 410 sprint cars, is now leading the NARC Rookie of the Year chase and is expected to race on Saturday. Joining her also is Fremont's Shane Golobic, who was the hard charger at Thunderbowl, and who won a BCRA midget race at Antioch in May and will look to pick up a sprint car win there on Saturday. Also expected to compete are reigning NARC champion Justin Sanders of Aromas, Lemoore's Gauge Garcia, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery, Dominic Gorden of Clovis, Dylan Bloomfield of Oakley, and Max Mittry of Redding. Washington's Jesse Schlotfeldt will continue his fall swing of races in California and Oklahoma's Cannon McIntosh is expected to again pilot a Roth Motorsports entry. FAN INFO Antioch Speedway is located at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds at 1201 W 10th Street. It's an all open wheel night as the NARC 410 sprint cars will be joined by the BCRA and USAC Western States midgets. General admission for adults is $35 with kids, seniors and military getting in for $25. Front gates open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with qualifying and racing to follow. After Saturday's race in Antioch, the next NARC event is October 25th at the dirt track at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield, and the season concludes with the Tribute to Gary Patterson on Saturday, November 1st at the Stockton Dirt Track. The Northern Auto Racing Club is the premier 410 winged sprint car series in the western United States. Since 1960, the traveling organization has thrilled fans at dirt tracks up and down the West Coast and crowned a "King of the West" champion. - NARC BEGINS HOME STRETCH WITH CHRIS & BRIAN FARIA MEMORIAL AT TULARE
(9/30/25 - Andrew Kunas) Tulare, CA ... The closing stretch of the 2025 NARC King of the West sprint car season is upon us. The first of four races in five weeks is this Saturday as the NARC teams tackle the famous Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare for the Chris & Brian Faria Memorial. This action-packed racing card will also feature the Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360's. The race is one of the cornerstone events at the popular 1/3-mile clay oval. First contested in 2002, the event honors a pair of brothers from the Faria family, longtime participants in California racing. Chris Faria, who was an up and coming racer, passed away after a farming accident in 1993. His older brother Brian, who was active behind the scenes at Thunderbowl Raceway, tragically passed away in early 2006 in a traffic accident, and Brian's name was soon put alongside his brother's for this race. The 2025 race was originally scheduled for April 26th, but Mother Nature interfered and forced its postponement. NARC and Thunderbowl Raceway officials agreed to reschedule the event for October 4th to start a busy stretch to finish NARC's season. The event, held at one of California's most challenging dirt tracks, has long been looked forward to by NARC competitors and fans, and the list of past winners of the race reads like a who's who of west coast sprint car racing. Jason Meyers, a future World of Outlaws champion, won the inaugural event in 2002. National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Brent Kaeding won it twice in the latter years of his legendary career. A young kid named Kyle Larson, years before the NASCAR world got to know him, was the 2010 winner of the race. NARC champions such as D.J. Netto and Kyle Hirst are also past winners. Last year's event, ironically postponed by weather to a later date also, was won by Cole Macedo aboard the Tarlton Motorsports No. 21. WHO TO WATCH Speaking of NARC champions, former series champ D.J. Netto, who lives just down the road from Thunderbowl Raceway in Hanford, holds a slim 14-point lead over another former champion in Sean Becker of Oroville. Netto has two NARC wins to his credit this season, but hasn't won since May. Netto, however, has seen success in Tulare over the years, including winning the 2015 edition of the Faria. Netto hopes his past success at Thunderbowl Raceway will continue as he seeks his second NARC championship. After winning six NARC races during the summer with Australian ace James McFadden in cockpit, the Tarlton Motorsports team will welcome back Oregon's Tanner Holmes, who piloted the car back in the spring. Holmes was victorious in NARC competition with the Tarlton team in May when he took the first of the Twin 20's at the Morrie Williams Memorial in Tulare. After piloting his family's car during the summer, Holmes will rejoin the Tarlton's and is hoping for a repeat of May this Saturday. Between Holmes and McFadden, the seven NARC wins by the Tarlton Motorsports No. 21 team are tied for the most this season with the Mittry Motorsports No. 2x, all of theirs with Justin Sanders behind the wheel. The second of the Twin 20's in May was won by Caeden Steele, and it was the young Fresno-area driver's first NARC win. Steele is another driver hoping that past history will repeat itself on Saturday. Sean Becker, despite running second in points, is winless this season, but has been competitive all season and is coming off a podium run at the last NARC race at Placerville Speedway on September 6th. Another driver expected this Saturday include Campbell's Bud Kaeding, a winner in August at the Johnny Key Classic at Ocean Speedway. Kaeding enters the night third in the points, just 23 tallies back of Netto with four races remaining. Also expected this Saturday are Dominic Scelzi of Fresno, Dominic Gorden of Clovis, Mariah Ede of Fresno, Gauge Garcia of Lemoore, Shane Golobic of Fremont, Billy Aton of Benicia, John Clark of Windsor, Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton, Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Landon Brooks of Rio Oso, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Cannon McIntosh from Bixby, OK. Arlington. Washington's Jesse Schlotfeldt will be making the journey from the Pacific Northwest also to join NARC for its remaining races. Schlotfeldt won his first career NARC event in June at Cottage Grove Speedway. FAN INFO It will be ALL sprint cars for the fans on Saturday as NARC will be joined by the 360 Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Tickets will be available at the front gate. Grandstand tickets are $35, and $33 for seniors. Bleacher seats are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors and $15 for kids 12 and under. Pit passes are $45. Front gates open at 4:00 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled for 5:45 with qualifying at 6:00 and racing beginning at 7:00 p.m. Thunderbowl Raceway is located along K Street at the Tulare County Fairgrounds. - NARC RETURNS TO OCEAN SPEEDWAY FOR 65TH ANNUAL JOHNNY KEY CLASSIC
(7/28/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... The NARC 410 Sprint Car Series will make its final visit of the season to Ocean Speedway on Saturday, August 2nd, when the series takes part in the 65th running of the Johnny Key Classic. The event honors a legendary driver who dominated California racing during the late 1940's and 1950's. It was 1952 where Key reportedly won an astounding 54 races in different classes of cars, and that included a 500-lap race at San Jose Speedway where he won by 18 laps. Key won numerous other races in sprint cars and midgets during his career and won several championships. Key lost his life at just 30 years of age in a midget crash in 1954 in Ohio. The Johnny Key Classic was first run in 1954, shortly after his passing, and was won by Danny Graves. It ran for decades under different lengths and formats, but it was run in San Jose until 1999. After a hiatus, the event was brought back in 2007 at Ocean Speedway as a 360 sprint car event. In 2025, the event became a 410 sprint car event under NARC sanctioning. Saturday's race will be the fourth for NARC at Ocean Speedway and will pay $5,000 to the winner of the 30-lap main event. Nick Rescino leads everyone with six Johnny Key Classic victories over the years. Howard Kaeding was a four-time winner while his legendary son Brent won it twice. Other past winners of the race in its various forms include Al Pombo, Clyde Palmer, Marshall Sargent and Mike Sargent, Burt Foland, Chuck Miller, Ronnie Day, Tommy Tarlton, and more recently the likes of Rico Abreu, Justin Sanders, Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Thorson, Shane Golobic and Dominic Scelzi. WHO TO WATCH Former NARC champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell will be one driver fans will be keeping an eye on. While he didn't win on either night at the Howard Kaeding Classic, Bud did lead laps in the main event on the first night before a treacherous cushion bit him and sent him off the track. Kaeding knows Ocean Speedway well and will look at it as an opportunity to get back in the win column in NARC competition aboard the BK Motorsports No. 29. After mechanical issues in his heat race last Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway, Kaeding earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award in the main event, moving up ten positions. Gauge Garcia of Lemoore won last year's Johnny Key Classic, its last as a 360 event. Garcia is still hunting his first 410 victory with NARC, and it would be ironic if that first win came in the event he previously won in something different. He and the Keller Motorsports No. 2k have dealt with motor issues throughout the season but have still shown speed throughout. D.J. Netto, another former NARC champion, has two wins on the season and took over the points lead Saturday at Santa Maria. The Hanford driver and the Netto Ag No. 88n turned in a fourth place run in Watsonville the other weekend but suffered a mechanical problem and dropped out of the feature in Santa Maria. Despite having the points lead, Netto is wanting to get back in the win column this weekend. Also expected to compete is Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson, who leads the NARC Rookie of the Year chase and had a podium finish at Ocean Speedway in May. Fresno drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede are expected to join, along with Oroville's Sean Becker, Dominic Gordon of Clovis, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery and John Clark from Windsor. Former track champion Kurt Nelson is a frequent participant when NARC visits his home track as well. FAN INFO Ocean Speedway is located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville, at 2601 E Lake Ave. Front gates open at 3:30 p.m. with racing scheduled 6:00 p.m. Also joining NARC to race on Saturday will be IMCA modifieds, IMCA sport mods and BCRA lightning sprints. Saturday's event concludes the "Cooler Weather Tour," the recent stretch of races for NARC all scheduled along the California coast and featuring comfortable temperatures for teams and fans. After a break allowing NARC teams to go to the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa and High Limit events happening after that in California, NARC returns to action when it visits the reopening Calistoga Speedway for the Louie Vermeil Classic on Saturday and Sunday, August 30th and 31st. The Northern Auto Racing Club is the premier 410 winged sprint car series in the western United States. Since 1960, the traveling organization has thrilled fans at dirt tracks up and down the West Coast and crowned a "King of the West" champion. - Dominic Scelzi wins SCCT Speedweek finale/ Max Mittry edges Kinzer Cox for title
Elma, Washington…Fresno's Dominic Scelzi charged from the ninth starting spot to claim victory during the SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek finale on Sunday night at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. When all was said and done after eight races in 10 days, Redding's Max Mittry topped Oregon racer Kinzer Cox by just two points to win the $4,000 Speedweek championship. Mittry put together a consistent week of racing with top 10 finishes in all but two events, earning the biggest moment of his Sprint Car career. "This is really a special feeling to win the SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek title," Mittry commented after the race. "It was a lot of fun racing with Kinzer Cox all week and for it to come down to just a couple points was pretty exciting. I want to thank everybody that helps on this car." The 30-lap Speedweek finale began with Mittry jumping out front at the waving of the green flag. Fans were treated to some intriguing high-speed action at the Grays Harbor Raceway on this night. El Paso, Texas driver Aydan Saunders paced Mittry over the early stages before closing in, making it a battle for the top spot. Both drivers pulled away from the field and raced closely together for numerous laps, before Saunders took command on lap 20. Dominic Scelzi was also on the move however and showed his muscle taking over third on lap 15. The top three then bunched up in thrilling fashion on lap 20 and saw Scelzi scoot to second with 21 circuits complete. One lap later Scelzi rocketed to the lead and pulled away from the pack to record his 12th career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour victory. It marked his second triumph of SCCT Speedweek, after also winning on Tuesday at Coos Bay Speedway. The battle for the Speedweek title came right down to the closing laps with Mittry finishing second and Cox coming home in third during the main event. Both drivers must be commended for putting on a fantastic championship fight. The two came into the final Shop Kyle Larson A-main tied for the point lead and both did an exceptional job in the 30-lapper. Skagit 360 Nationals winner Trey Starks earned the Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Award by driving his way from 14th to fourth with Saunders completing the top five. Rounding out the top 10 were Jesse Schlotfeldt, Seth Standley, Tyler Thompson, Austin Wood and Kelly Miller. A total of 22 cars were on hand to finish off SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek. Destry Miller claimed his first career SCCT Fast Time Award presented by Sierra Foothills Wine Services. The 16-year-old toured his home track in 13.308 seconds. The track had faced closure a couple of times over the years, but recently got back up and running again and in 2024 it returned to the NARC schedule after a three-year absence. Last year's NARC event saw a wild finish in which Justyn Cox tangled with a slower car and flipped upside down on the final lap, costing him a victory. Chase Johnson took advantage and picked up his fourth career NARC win. He was joined on the podium by Kaleb Montgomery and Gauge Garcia, a pair of drivers worth keeping an eye on this Saturday. Montgomery is still hunting for his first NARC victory but has shown flashes at times. Montgomery, who lives just up the road from Santa Maria Speedway in Templeton, has turned in strong runs this season, including finishing fifth and sixth respectively during last weekend's Howard Kaeding Classic at Ocean Speedway. Finishing runner-up at Santa Maria last year and having won the USAC/CRA non-wing race at the same track in May, Montgomery could see this Saturday's race as the one where he gets his first NARC win. Garcia, from Lemoore, is also still searching for a NARC win. He and the Paso Robles-based Keller Motorsports No. 2k team have fought motor problems throughout the season, but have performed well in several main events, often passing many cars and on four occasions this season Garcia earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger award. Before last year's return to Santa Maria, the last NARC race at Santa Maria Speedway was in 2021, and it was Benicia's Billy Aton who scored his first NARC victory that night. Saturday's event is part of NARC's "Cooler Weather Tour," as some have called it, the current stretch of events for the series happening at tracks along the California coast, where race teams and fans can expect more comfortable temperatures while it is typically very hot in the California interior. WHO ELSE TO WATCH Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson has quietly put together a very solid and consistent season as he chases the NARC Rookie of the Year award aboard the Main Motorsports No. 35km. In 15 regular NARC events (not counting the special format seeing inverted main event fields at Skagit Speedway's Super Dirt Cup in June), Thompson recorded ten Top 10 finishes in those races, many of which had been at tracks he hadn't seen before. His best run was a third place finish on May 16th at Ocean Speedway, and in that race Thompson briefly challenged eventual race winner Justin Sanders for the lead. Thompson sits third overall in the points and has twice posted quick time in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying, twice won a heat race and twice earned the hard charger nod. Many have recently begun looking at Thompson as another driver due to make a big breakthrough in 410 sprint car competition. Former NARC champion D.J. Netto of Hanford, twice a winner this season and second in the points entering the weekend, along with 2005 NARC champion Sean Becker from Oroville, and 2019 series king Bud Kaeding from Campbell will fill out a stellar line-up of competitors. Others expected to compete include Fresno drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede, Dominic Gorden from Clovis, Kansas driver Jace Park, Hollister's Ryan Bernal, and many others. FAN INFO Santa Maria Speedway is located at 1900 Hutton Road, right off of Hwy 101, in Nipomo, just north of Santa Maria itself. Tickets are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors 65+, military and students ages 11 to 17. Kids 10 and under are free. Front gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Also scheduled to race are IMCA Racesaver sprints, BCRA lightning sprints and dwarf cars. ABOUT NARC The Northern Auto Racing Club is the premier 410 winged sprint car series in the western United States. - SCCT ready to tackle Western Sprint Tour Speedweek on July 18th-27th
Chico, CA…For the second consecutive season the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour is primed for Western Sprint Tour Speedweek, which showcases eight nights of racing at seven different venues from California to Washington. Everything kicks off in a big way at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway this Friday July 18th with the 12th annual "Tyler Wolf Memorial" race. It will be a definite highlight of Speedweek, as we honor the late racer. It also doubles as Fan Appreciation Night, with grandstand tickets costing just $5. Kids 12 and under will be free. When 20-year-old Tyler Wolf lost his life at Calistoga Speedway in 2012, it was one of the darkest days in recent memory for the California racing scene. The Redding native had captured the Silver Dollar Speedway track title one year prior and was well liked throughout the pit area. The event in his memory continues to be one of the special shows each season at Silver Dollar Speedway and is the only SCCT visit of 2025. One night later Speedweek rolls on with the $5,000-to-win/ $500-to-start "Gold Pan Rampage" at Placerville Speedway on Saturday July 19th. It marks the final Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour appearance of the season at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds quarter mile. Monday July 21st begins a trio of races in Oregon all starting at the Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg. Tuesday July 22nd then brings the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to Coos Bay Speedway, followed by Cottage Grove Speedway on Wednesday July 23rd. A travel day with a Fan Fest/ Kick-Off Party on Thursday sets up the SCCT debut at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington for the two-night "Fred Brownfield 360 Nationals" presented by Bob's Burgers & Brew, highlighted by a $26,000-to-win/ $1,000-to-start main event on Saturday July 26th. With a unique format on tap at Skagit Speedway, both nights will feature show up points only in the season-long championship race. SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek all comes to a climax on Sunday July 27th at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. The "Hall of Fame 360 Battle Royale" marks the first series appearance at the track. The overall SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek champion will take home $4,000 as part of an $8,000 total point fund. The runner up nets $2,500 while third place will claim $1,500. Each Shop Kyle Larson main event during Speedweek will hand out a minimum of $3,000-to-win/ $400-to-start the 24-car field. After winning the most recent event, 18-year-old Chance Grasty sits atop the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour standings heading into Speedweek. Sacramento's Austin Wood, Montana driver Cole Schroeder, Yuba City's Seth Standley and Marysville's Dawson Hammes complete the top five. Additional competitors looking to be a common sight during Speedweek will include reigning Garth Moore Insurance Rookie of the Year Braden Chiaramonte from El Cajon, two-time Skagit 360 Nationals winner Seth Bergman of Snohomish, Washington, Marysville's Carson Hammes, Elk Grove's Bubba Decaires, Modesto's Tony Gomes, Arlington, Washington's Jesse Schlotfeldt, Redding's Max Mittry, Cotati's Jake Haulot, Brentwood's Adriana Demartini, Visalia's Jett Barnes, Santa Rosa's Tyler Cato and others. - $80,000+ IN PRIZE MONEY ON THE LINE FOR NARC SPRINT CARS AT HOWARD KAEDING CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND
(7/14/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... One of the most special events of the season for the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series is next when it visits Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, this Friday and Saturday (July 18-19), for the 15th Annual Howard Kaeding Classic. The event honors the patriarch of the famed Kaeding family that includes his Hall of Fame son Brent, and grandsons Bud and Tim. HK, as he was known to his friends, was a champion racer in his own right, most especially at the old San Jose Speedway where he won several championships and at one point famously won 17 consecutive races. The race saluting the "Campbell Comet" was already a staple in the California 410 sprint car schedule, but this year's event has taken on special meaning with Howard passing away in February at the age of 92. Before Howard's passing, it was already announced that this year's event would be a two-night show. Now in just the last couple of weeks it was announced that Saturday's purse will see an increase, with the main event paying $10,000 to win ($1,500 to start A), while Friday's show pays a neat $5,000 ($750 to start A.) This was made possible by many generous sponsorships from companies with ties to the Kaeding family and the racing community. WHO TO WATCH With the added special meaning to the event, not to mention the now five-figure payday on the final night, many of the top drivers on the West Coast will be competing hard for victories. Reigning "King of the West" Justin Sanders of Aromas won his second Howard Kaeding Classic last year, one of his seven victories on his way to the 2024 NARC title. Sanders has four NARC wins to his credit this season, including a win at Ocean Speedway in May, but is locked in a tight points race atop the standings with former series champion D.J. Netto of Hanford, who is just one point ahead of Sanders. Netto, meanwhile, has never won a Kaeding Classic and would love to add one to his resume. Of course, no racer out there would love to win this weekend more than brothers Tim and Bud Kaeding, who will be racing with heavy hearts at the race honoring their grandfather. Bud has twice won the HK, picking up wins in 2014 and 2019. Tim picked up his 75th career NARC victory on Saturday at Petaluma Speedway and like his father and grandfather is one of the most accomplished sprint car racers ever from California. He has never won a Howard Kaeding Classic and Tim no doubt wants to get that first one this Saturday. Fremont's Shane Golobic, the 2023 Howard Kaeding Classic winner, is expected to compete, along with 2021 winner Sean Becker or Oroville. Tyler Thompson of Harrisburg, Oregon continues his search for his first NARC win but still sits third in points and leads the NARC Rookie of the Year chase. Fresno's Caeden Steele, a first-time NARC winner in May, had an impressive run at last Saturday's Petaluma event and will look to build off of that this weekend. Other drivers expected to race this weekend include two-time series champ Dominic Scelzi of Fresno, Lemoore's Gauge Garcia, Billy Aton of Benicia, Fresno's Mariah Ede, Dominic Gorden of Clovis, and Tucson's Nick Parker. The Howard Kaeding Classic was first held in 2011 with Evan Suggs picking up the win. NARC great Jonathan Allard won the next two. Kyle Hirst leads all drivers with three wins in the prestigious event. Colby Copeland and current World of Outlaws standout Buddy Kofoid each have single HK victories as well. FAN INFO Ocean Speedway is on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, located at 2601 E Lake Ave. Friday's show will have sport mods and hobby stocks in action also. On Saturday, NARC will be joined by the BCRA/WMR midgets, hobby stocks and modifieds. Qualifying will get underway at 5:30 p.m. with opening ceremonies at approximately 6:00 p.m. The pit gate opens at 2:00 p.m. After the races on Friday there will be an "After Party" on the track grounds. There will also be the Howard Kaeding Luncheon on Saturday that will see proceeds benefiting the NARC Benevolent Fund. This is all part of the Howard Kaeding Classic weekend at Ocean Speedway. This weekend's races are of the "Cooler Weather Tour," a stretch of races for NARC all taking place at tracks along the California coast and all expecting to have more comfortable coastal temperatures while the California interior bakes in summer heat. July 26th will see NARC make its annual visit to Santa Maria Speedway, before the series returns to Ocean Speedway on August 2nd for the Johnny Key Classic.
