IMCA - International Motor Contest Association
The International Motor Contest Association (IMCA), organized in 1915, is the oldest active automobile racing sanctioning body in the United States. IMCA's mission is affordable, entertaining and competitive auto racing as a sanctioning body. We are committed to establishing and enforcing fair and consistent rules that will strengthen and promote the racing industry.
Since exploding onto the racing scene in 1979, the Modifieds have become the calling card of IMCA. These open wheel wonders push the limits of power and excitement. With a one-tire rule and the well-known engine claim, the grandstand enthusiast can now afford to strap on the safety belts and have a realistic opportunity to compete and WIN feature events. IMCA's other divisions incorporate these philosophies and are continuing to see excellent growth.

- BRODY ROA TEAMS WITH TOMMY AND CHRISTY DUNKEL FOR THE 2023 SPRINT CAR SEASON
(Cypress, CA, January 24, 2023) When the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars Series kicks off its 24th season of racing at Brad Whitfield's Cocopah Speedway this Friday and Saturday, January 27th and 28th, longtime fans are going to be in for a big surprise. When the first green flag flies to begin the new campaign, veteran racer Brody Roa will not be in his familiar bright green #91R. For 2023, Roa's BR Performance is joining forces with Tom and Christy Dunkel and he will steer a white #17R throughout the year. 307549757_5399488930087465_6408996414449942611_n.jpg' Left to right: Joe Gobb, crew chief Zac Bozanich, Brody Roa and Brett Roa after a 2022 Perris win. Doug Allen photo. Last year Roa, who turns 32 years old on Wednesday, freelanced during the season. The pleasant driver started 37 races on 18 different tracks in four different states. He competed in five different types of cars in seven different sanctioning bodies. Right now for 2023, his plans include the entire 27-race USAC/CRA schedule and four open competition races at the Imperial Valley Raceway. He may also make some starts in the USAC/West Coast Sprint Car Series. Initially, Roa was going to do the usual and race his own car in CRA. And he was going to run as a teammate to Dunkel in the West Coast Series. However, while breaking bread with the Dunkel's a couple of weeks ago, a drastic change took place. "We went to dinner about a week and a half ago under the impression we were going to talk about the 360 races I was going to run for them," Roa said on Sunday night. "I threw something out to them about doing something with the 410 stuff. Him and Christy went back and talked about it. It ended up that they now have the 410s HD (HD Industries) used to have. We are going to run a Tom & Christy Dunkel/Inland Rigging/BR Performance Race Team this year. We just bought a brand new DRC. We got that two weeks ago or maybe less than that. We just finished that up last Wednesday night. We are going to fire it up tomorrow. We sold our Eagles and we have our trailer up for sale. Kind of big changes. I am very excited to represent Tom, Christy, and Inland Rigging running in the new #17R." "Man, this is huge," said car owner Tommy Dunkel who is just as excited as Roa. "Just kind of hearing it out loud for the first time from you, kind of gives me goosebumps. It is a major deal for me. I have grown up watching Major League Sprint Car Racing at Perris my entire life. To be able to be a part of it in our capacity leading up to this year with Brody and a few other drivers has been huge. Now to step things up a bit and become a major player in Brody's operation is going to be great. To team up with guys like them, who are so good and nice guys in the pits, but they come out swinging every weekend. That is kind of my style. I like to show up and try to win and have nice equipment. Those guys are at the top of their league. To team up with them is really major for me. We are really excited about it." "The opportunity just presented itself pretty well." Dunkel continued. "Brody has always been a great guy to work with. He has been running with Inland Rigging on his car for a handful of years now. He is always a class act. Him, his dad Brett, Zac (crew chief Zac Bozanich), and that whole camp are a great group of guys. They are competitive and they are a force to be reckoned with every Saturday night. That is something I like to be a part of." Up until now, the offseason has been anything but normal for Roa and his team. In late December, fans and fellow competitors noticed quite a bit of his equipment up for sale. There were queries wondering if the Garden Grove, California racing star was going to hang up his helmet. The questions intensified earlier in January when his trailer went up for sale. However, to everyone's relief, he is back and ready for another successful season. "We sold a chassis & body and a complete roller," the fan-friendly driver said." "We put a new DRC together with everything from the chassis we sold. We are basically keeping like one spare of everything. Other than that, everything is up for sale. We have probably got enough to build like 6 cars with everything we have back at the shop besides the big stuff. We have small components we probably had stashed away in that shop for 10 years. We definitely have not sold everything yet." The fact that he is switching from an Eagle chassis to a DRC is going to surprise a lot of people. Not competing on the full USAC/CRA schedule in 2022, Roa steered the Eagle to a pair of wins and six top-five finishes. And he finished sixth in the championship point standings despite missing a significant amount of races. Still, he felt he wanted to change. "I have never driven a DRC before," Roa confided. "Honestly, it just seems like it is the car that everybody is doing non-wing stuff in right now. I called Ronnie Gardner who works there. I am pretty good friends with Ronnie. I've talked to him about it a bit and then Joe Devin, who builds the DRCs, called me. We talked on the phone for probably at least a half an hour. It was pretty cool and that probably helped the decision. Mainly to get back to something that everybody is doing. Everybody has got notes and everybody has parts (for DRC's). At this point, I think we know what we are doing, but If we get really lost at least there are people we can bounce ideas off of." As in the past, Roa will continue to use powerful Shaver Engines. As always, when the driver known as "The Pride of Garden Grove" has an off week from his local racing commitments, he would be happy to talk with any car owners who desire his services behind the wheel (Roa's 2023 schedule is listed below). Roa is very grateful and wanted to be sure to thank departing sponsor HD Industries for years of dedicated support on his #91R car. "HD has given us so much over the last ten years," Roa said. "They have been on the side of the car and a huge part of our program for so many years. Without them, we never would have achieved the successes we accomplished. I will always be thankful to Mike, Jim, and HD." "I would also like to thank family and friends who are part of our racing effort," Roa said. "My family Tailor and Addison, parents Brett and Eden, Uncle B, Joe, Zac, Tyler, Tracy, and looking forward to joining family teams with Tom, Christy, and Ava Dunkel." Friday and Saturday's races at Cocopah Speedway - aka "The Diamond in the Desert," - will be full programs with qualifying, heats, and main events. For fans who would like to attend this weekend's doubleheader, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. each day with hot laps at 5:30. Qualifying and racing will follow. In addition to the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, the IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Sport Compacts and mod lights will also be in action. The speedway is located at 3450 W. County 15th Street in Somerton, Arizona (85350). The office phone is 602-292-7607 and the website is http://www.racecocopahspeedway.com/. For those who cannot make the trek to the "Copper State" track, both nights will be available on pay-per-view at the following link https://speedsport.tv/. The team wants to thank the following sponsors for making the 2023 season possible. Inland Rigging, Dunkel Farms, United Asset Sales, Osborne Speed & Machine, Sander Engineering, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, K-1 Race Gear, Molecule, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - 63rd Antioch Speedway Schedule Released
Antioch, CA...The 2023 season at Antioch Speedway will also be the 63rd consecutive year of championship auto racing on the 3/8 mile clay oval. For the fourth year, Chad Chadwick of PROmotions will be at the helm. The season will offer a few new touches to the schedule, while also giving the fans plenty of IMCA sanctioned Modified, Sport Modified and Stock Car racing. The popular Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints, Super Stocks, Print Club Mini Stocks and Delta Dwarf Cars will also be in the regular rotation, and we will also get more visits from the Hardtops. Working with Chadwick in putting the schedule together was Race Director Chris Bennett. From the time Bennett was a kid in the grandstands cheering on his favorite racers, he's taken the time to learn the sport and even competed in multiple divisions. A primary concern for Bennett and Chadwick this year was to put together a schedule that had Antioch Speedway's best interest at heart, while also working with some of the neighboring tracks to not step on their schedules. All too often, we've seen conflicts in the scheduling, and many times Antioch Speedway has been on the worst end of those conflicts. Bennett and Chadwick both wanted to make sure that Antioch Speedway fans would be getting a dose of great racing action on any occasion on which the speedway opened for business. Bennett had another thing in mind when he was first able to make scheduling adjustments going into September last year. He wanted to give the fans more Sprint Car racing. Through the years, the speedway has offered some of the best traveling association Sprint Car shows as well as its own in-house efforts, but things have gotten light on the schedule of late. It started with Chris getting a Hunt Series race for the Soares Memorial last October, continued with the addition of the first ever Open Wheel Showcase in November and concluded later that month when several phone calls resulted in 22 Wingless Spec Sprints for the final race of the year . The Open Wheel Showcase was designed to get the track back on the Sprint Car Tour's schedule, and it's happened in a big way. On April 29th, the Speedway welcomes the return of the NARC Fujitsu Winged 410 Sprint Car series, joined by the track's IMCA Modifieds and Stock Cars along with the Delta Dwarf Cars. On July 1st, the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour, Presented by Abreu Vineyards, will be in the house, joined by the track's Hobby Stock division. on April 15th, the Hunt Wingless Sprint Series will be there along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds. The Hunt Series returns on July 29th along with the IMCA Modifieds and Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and WMR Midgets Also competing will be the BCRA Midgets, Lightning Sprints and Vintage Midgets on August 26th and September look 23rd. The BCRA Midgets and Lightning Sprints will also be in action on April 8th. The USAC Western State Midgets will be in town on March 25th along with the IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars, the Hobby Stocks and the Delta Dwarf Cars. Fans wanting Sprint Cars will get plenty of it. The track will also run the occasional Winged 360 Sprint Car show, offer the 25th season of Wingless Spec Sprints and brings back the Sprint Car Showcase on November 11th. The intent is to give the fans more special occasions with plenty of racing and fast cars to enjoy. Some adjustments had to be made in October, and that meant that established events were getting moved. Everybody knew that the second weekend of October was the Soares Memorial Hall of Fame weekend. However, Hall of Fame night has been moved to September 15th and 16th. The two-race weekend offers IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks on the 15th and Wingless Spec Sprints, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Super Stocks, Delta Dwarf Cars and Mini Stocks on the 16th. The Soares Memorial event will take on a more important tone as the trifecta of IMCA, Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars, compete along with the Hobby Stocks and Xtreme Limited Late Models. After the success in saving the Larry Damitz Memorial race last October, the tribute to the legendary competitor who raced until he was 87, has been moved to May 13th. Among the divisions in the lineup will be the Tri State Pro Stock Series, the West Coast Hobby Stock Series and the Hardtops that Damitz competed in for the first 20 years of his career. The IMCA Sport Modifieds will also be there that night along with the third running of the Mother's Day Minivan race. Hobby stock fans will still get a big dose of the division they love. The Third Annual Hobby Stock Nationals will take place on October 6th and 7th, while the Dean Cline Classic returns on June 17th. Fans of the IMCA trifecta will get plenty of it. On some occasions, the divisions will be separated. On July 8th, those three divisions will compete in the 7th Annual Hetrick Memorial along with the Wingless Spec Sprints. On October 21st and 22nd, the three IMCA divisions run for the money again in the 5th Annual Bill Bowers Memorial West Coast Nationals. The Friday portion will also pay tribute to living legend and Hall of Famer JD Willis. The fans demanded their Figure 8 after what turned out to be the biggest attended event in the postseason last October. The 15-car field ran for $1,000 to win that race, won by two-time Spec Sprint champion Dan Gonderman. The big money event will take place on the second night of the Hobby Stock Nationals among the six events for the series this year. Other touches might be added to Figure 8 races throughout the season. Likewise, the Hardtops will have seven races, including the Annual Chet Thompson Memorial on September 30th. There's discussions about that night also being a Hall of Fame celebration for Vallejo Speedway. On October 28th, the track will also have the second running of the Butch Althar Memorial Hardtop show. Dwarf Car racing fans have things to be excited about. On June 9th and 10th, the annual Dwarf Car Nationals will bring some of the best drivers on the West Coast to the track. Friday will see the Wingless Spec Sprints and IMCA Stock Cars joining them, while the Tri State Pro Stocks and Mini Stocks will be there a night later. On April 29th, the Delta Dwarf Cars go head to head with the NorCal Dwarf Cars as part of the big Sprint Car event. The West Coast Sport Compact Series comes to Antioch on August 26th. The schedule looks so exciting and action-packed that fans will be breaking out their highlighter pens to pick out the dates. More of those dates will be highlighted as must see for long time Speedway observers. After a couple of practice events, the season kicks off on March 11th with Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Wingless Spec Sprints, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks. A week later is the season opener for the IMCA Modifieds along with Wingless Spec Sprints and Mini Late Models. The three IMCA sanctioned divisions, Hobby Stocks and Delta Dwarf Cars will be a part of the third week of racing on March 25th along with USAC Western States Midgets. Super Stock point racing kicks into high gear on May 6th along with Wingless Spec Sprints, Hobby Stocks, Delta Dwarf Cars and Mini Stocks. Racing kicked into gear back in March and didn't let up until the last weekend of November. Fans got to see a nice variety of different shows along with special events, such as two Malicious Monster Truck Insanity Tour visits and two Flat Track Motorcycle events. People know what to expect at the speedway these days. The IMCA Modifieds have been a featured class since 1990, the Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stocks have been around since 1995, the Delta Dwarf Cars have been a regular attraction since 1998, the Wingless Spec Sprints have been there since 1999, the Super Stocks have been there since 2000, the Mini Stocks have been there on and off since 2003, the Hardtops have been making visits since 2008 and the IMCA Sport Modifieds are the new kids on the block, competing regularly at the track since 2012. Most of the divisions had at least one special event with more money on the line. The bigger picture was the championship battle that took place in each regular class. When the final checkered flag flew on the point races, titles were won by Nick DeCarlo IMCA Modifieds, Fred Ryland, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Travis Dutra IMCA Stock Cars, Misty Welborn Hobby Stocks, Shannon Newton Wingless Spec Sprints, Danny Wagner Delta Dwarf Cars, Jim Freethy Super Stocks and Tom Brown Mini Stocks. A few of those battles went down to the wire. Sometimes there might only be one driver going for the IMCA Modified championship, but in this case Nick DeCarlo and Kellen Chadwick both declared intent. The 15 race point season went down to the wire and ended up with both drivers tied at the top. It came down to wins with DeCarlo edging Chadwick four to three. DeCarlo also had 12 Top 5 finishes to 11 for Chadwick. The race had to be audited through IMCA, but as many times the totals end up going with what the sanctioning body initially had, it was proven that Antioch had the total correct all along. The sanctioning body always edits to make sure things are accurate on their end. Bobby Motts Jr was in the hunt for most of the season, but the past champion couldn't quite get it to the winner's circle. He did, however earn six Top 3 finishes, including two runner up efforts, to maintain third in the standings ahead of an intense rookie battle between Trevor Clymens and Terry DeCarlo Jr. The two drivers went back and forth until Clymens broke through to get season best second and third place finishes in a three race span. Clymens had 11 Top 5 efforts to three for DeCarlo, but he still only won this battle by 12 points. The list of feature winners during the course of the season included seven-time victor Troy Foulger, two-time winner Bobby Hogge IV and 2004 champion Aaron Crowell one time. Foulger won the Bill Bowers Memorial West Coast Nationals in October. He came close to winning the Hetrick Memorial in July before settling for second behind Hogge in the extra money affair. Fred Ryland returned In his effort to match Trevor Clymens as a three-time IMCA Sport Modified champion. Along the way, he picked up his 70th combined career win at the Speedway, moving him into fourth on the all-time winner's list. Ryland needed those wins with Andrew Pearce nipping at his heels. He picked up four feature wins to three for Pearce. Pearce edged Ryland, 12 Top 5s to 11. Pearce won the last two point events, but mechanical errors while leading late In the third to last race of the season may have been his undoing. Ryland beat Pearce by eight points. Rising star Jacob Mallet Jr set about winning the IMCA State championship and accomplished the task. He won at multiple venues, including two wins at Antioch among nine Top 5 efforts. He had a solid hold on third. Kenny Shrader picked up three wins during the season, but two of them were the Hetrick Memorial and the Bill Bowers Memorial. This enabled him to beat Chuck Golden by just 11 tallies. The steady Golden had twelve Top 10 finishes and also won a race earlier in the season at Quincy. He was 23 points ahead of rapidly improving Jason Ryan Jr in the final rundown. A look at the winner's list found 2019 champion Tommy Fraser with two victories, while past champion KC Keller had one triumph. As the track continued to nurture the IMCA Stock Car division in its second full season, there were just 12 point events. Past Dwarf Car and Mini Truck champion Travis Dutra set about repeating as division champion. His consistency was unmatched. He had a division-leading 11 Top 5 efforts. Impressively, he racked up a division-leading five second place finishes, but he put the icing on his championship cake by winning his first race in the finale. Jason Robles had picked up two wins in seven Top 5 efforts, but bad luck kept him 20 points behind in the end. Past Mini Stock champion Jason Jennings battle past Street Stock competitor Dave Hill for third and top rookie honors. However, it wasn't as close as the 23 point differential in Jason's favor would make it appear. Jennings did have five Top 5 efforts. With Jim Reed turning the wrenches, Hill did get faster as the season ended and had two Top 5 finishes. Coming off of a third place season and driving a new car, Dan Gonderman beat Jeff Bentancourt by just seven points for fifth in the standings. His seven Top 5 efforts included three season-high third place finishes. Also earning spots on the winner's list were four-time victor Troy Foulger, three-time winner Garrett Corn, Fred Ryland with two triumphs and one win for Kellen Chadwick. Foulger won the IMCA Stock Car portion of the Bill Bowers Memorial and did the same at the extra money paying Construction Night event. Corn, who lost a close battle with Steven Johnson for the Merced title, had three wins, but a broken A-frame kept him for winning the Construction Night special. Corn was the winner of the IMCA Stock Car portion of the Hetrick Race. The Hobby Stock division proved to be the workhorse division at the track. They were also the division that had the best car count and frequently needed B Mains to set the 20 car grid for the feature race. Misty Welborn shot out of the gate like a cannonball with her three wins happening in the first four events. She had a total of six Top 5 efforts. Michaela Taylor kept it close during the first half of the season. Though Taylor had a season high second place Main Event finish in her three Top 5 efforts, the win eluded her. She needed the fourth place finish she had at the point finale to beat Jared Baugh by just for tallies. Baugh led the final race for several laps before mechanical issues ended that. He had 10 Top 5 efforts and two wins . Taylor DeCarlo had an eventful rookie season, including three Top 5 finishes, and she had a solid hold on fourth in her Rookie of the Year effort. The rapidly improving Jewell Crandall used her third fifth place finish in the point finale to overtake Grayson Baca by 20 points for fifth in the standings. Baca had six Top 5 finishes, including one win. Other drivers on the winner's list included Clarence Holbrook III four times, two times for Les Friend and one each for Kenneth Robles, Ken Johns, reigning champion Larry McKinzie Jr and Aidan Ponciano. The front-runners were likely breathing a sigh of relief as Holbrook only ran eight times and didn't chase points. He was dominant when he was there. The Dean Cline Classic was introduced as a late season addition, and McKinzie picked up the win in that race. Bakersfield star Dylan Wilson bagged the $5,000 prize in the second running of the Hobby Stock Nationals. The win on Hetrick Memorial night went to Les Friend. The Hobby Stocks also ran three Figure 8 races. There had been rumors of the addition of this class. After a rather bold statement was made by Figure 8 enthusiast Jim Robbins by running through an X that didn't exist on practice night in August, things changed. That event happened to be broadcast on the track's Facebook page, and Promoter Chad Chadwick threw down the gauntlet. Get him 15 cars for the race in October, and he'd pay $1,000 to win. Robbins himself beat the drum to get drivers to run and also secured sponsrship for this event. The rough and tumble Figure 8 that night didn't have 15 cars until Charlie Bryant signed up at the last minute. Figure 8 legend Johnny Keldsen, a three-time Antioch champion, nursed a smoking mount to a Top 3 finish, but it was two-time Spec Sprint champion Dan Gonderman hoisting the championship belt over his head and claiming the $1,000 prize. Other wins went to Richard Keldsen and son DJ Keldsen. Richard's win happened to be in the Mike Conley Salute. The Figure 8 proved very popular as the big money race was the best attended special show in postseason. The Wingless Spec Sprint division entered their 24th season on a seemingly high note, but car count was less than desired at times. With the win in the opener, Zack Neely was the early front runner in the John Hendrickson Motorsports car, but he fell out with the consistent James East taking over the lead. East did lead the class with eight Top 5 finishes, but a win was never in the cards for him. Shannon Newton got hot with four wins and seven Top 5s among his eight starts, enabling him to beat East by just 17 markers. The steady Steve Maionchi used his two Top 5 finishes to secure third by just 30 points over three-time Top 5 finisher MacKenzie Newton. Neely managed to settle for fifth. Also etching their names onto the winner's list were Ethon Lanfri, Cameron Martin, Scott Chapetta, Shawn Arriaga, Jarrett Soares, Daniel Whitley and Jimmy Christian. Arriaga collected the win in the special Sonny Calkins Memorial on June 11th, netting him a $2,500 payday. The Hunt Series was added on late notice as part of the Soares Memorial event in October, and Shawn Jones picked up that victory. A hastily scheduled race at the last event of the season saw an impressive 22 drivers show up with Jimmy Christian claiming the glory. The Dwarf Cars have had championships at Antioch since 1998, but this was the third year under the Delta Dwarf Car and Western States Dwarf Car rules package. Danny Wagner was unstoppable as the champion at Antioch and with the South Bay group at Watsonville. He racked up six wins in nine races at Antioch, and managed to nurse his lead despite driving with a broken arm for a few races. Despite falling 60 points short, young up-and-comer Devan Kammermann notched his first two wins among eight Top 5 finishes for a stellar season. The consistent Ellie Russo beat David Michael Rosa by 24 points to claim third as Chance Russell held off David Rosa by just 22 points for fifth. Antioch Speedway proudly hosted a Western States Dwarf Car Nationals event in July that had over 60 competitors. On the money night, it was Adam Teves picking up his first Pro division win. Teves has moved to Nevada, but he called Antioch Speedway his home track for several seasons. Mike Reeder won the Veteran division portion of the show, while Kinser Endicott was the Sportsman winner. Michael "Spanky" Grenert was the only other driver to get a win during regular season, but it was Brandon Shaw picking up the $1,000 prize in the special Nighthawk 30, which accompanied the Sprint Car Showcase. Janis Munroe held off Danny Wagner to win the after hours Golf Cart race in the pits during the Dwarf Car Nationals. The Super Stocks seemed to be on the edge of oblivion, but a few dedicated racers wouldn't give up the fight. With four wins to his credit, there was little doubt that Jim Freethy would win his third championship in the class. Joey Ridgeway liked to run at other tracks, and that proved negative towards his car when he had a hard crash at Petaluma. He had four fourth place finishes at Antioch to beat Jim Robbins by just eight markers. Robbins had a season-high second early in the season. Mike Walko was a solid fourth in the final rundown with two season-high seconds, one of which happened in the Larry Damitz Memorial. Two-time champion and division all-time winner Mike Gustafson had a season-high pair of third place finishes, giving him a six point advantage over Chad Hammer for fifth in the standings. Ryan Smith of the Tri State Pro Stock group won on a crazy night when their race had bad weather and several drivers came from Hanford to be a part of the Antioch show. Because he built and set up his car, Michael Burch put Nick DeCarlo behind the wheel on one occasion and watched DeCarlo claim the glory that night. Burch, who's been around the speedway for many years, picked up his first career win in the Larry Damitz Memorial race, netting him the $1,000 prize and a championship belt. In Mini Stock competition, Tom Brown picked up where he left off a year earlier. He again won the championship at Petaluma. With four wins at Antioch, he cruised to his second-consecutive title there. After Dana Gardner broke leading his heat in the point finale, Laina Bales overtook him for second by six points in the final rundown. She had two Top 5 finishes to six for Gardner. However, Gardner got hot in postseason with his first two wins. Don Abitz had three Top 5s to finish fourth in the standings by 16 points over rookie Shane Titman, who had two Top 5s. 2021 Petaluma Super Stock champion Randy Miramontez won the season opener. Many-time Orland Raceway champion Tom Davis won the special extra money race at the end of October. Race Director Chris Bennett organized the Sprint Car Showcase on November 12th and got a field of 23 competitors to show up for the race that was won by Colby Copeland over Colby Johnson and Kaleb Montgomery. The race was a success, leading to a Sprint Car Challenge Tour race being booked for 2023. The track had five Xtreme Scaffolding Limited Late Model races on the schedule. Dan Brown Jr had a pair of seconds and three wins in the Antioch races as he won the series title over the consistent Matt Micheli. Other wins went to Anthony Slaney in the opener and Placerville champion Dan Jinkerson the following week. The track had three WMR Midget races. It was Sage Bordenave beating Brody Petrie in an eventful race back in April. Series champion Blake Bower outran teammate Bryant Bell to win the next visit. Bower took a tumble in the final Antioch visit to end things early for him, while Hunt Wingless Sprint star Josh Young won that race ahead of Logan Mitchell and Terry Nichols. The BCRA Lightning Sprints made two appearances with wins going to Harlee Aguilera ahead of champion Matt Land and Peter Paulson in the first visit. Land outran Hunter Kinney and Brandon Leedy at the next go-round. There was a hastily scheduled Hardtop race at the end of September that was run in memory of the late Butch Althar. The Sportsman of two-time Merced champion Rick Elliott won this eventful showdown ahead of Joel Hannagan in the Doug Braudrick owned Junkyard Dog and Mike Gillard. They also had the regularly scheduled Chet Thomson Memorial, and Hannagan became the first three-time winner of this race ahead of Gillard and Elliott. The very first California Sharp Mini Late Model race was won by Late Model veteran Mitch Enos after early leader Matt Malcolm spun twice. There were many highlights during the 2022 season, and some good moments were created. There's much optimism in the air around the speedway. Though the 62nd season of racing might have had a lot of things to be proud of, the 63rd year is expected to be even better. Stay tuned for more information to come. - Bloomsburg Fair Raceway sets 2023 schedule in motion…USAC All-Pro SpeedSTRs will headline division line-up
(BLOOMSBURG 12-29-22): The Bloomsburg Fair Raceway has just put the finishing touches on the 2023 schedule of events that will be run at the 3/8-mile dirt oval located inside the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds with a dozen race dates slated that will all be held on Thursday evenings throughout the season. The action will commence on April 20 and continue through September 28. All racing will start at 7:00 pm. The Bloomsburg Fair Raceway will continue to keep up its goal of presenting action packed family entertainment at a good value although this year will also be a bit of a different feel as the track will run more standard divisions and for the first time there will be class champions crowned when all is said and done. Heading up the line-up will be the USAC All-Pro SpeedSTRs which bring an exciting brand of open-cockpit racing no matter where they compete at. Last season the SpeedSTRs participated for the first time at Bloomsburg - racing twice - and each feature turned out to be very thrilling and won by pair of standout drivers with Timmy Buckwalter and Billy Pauch Jr., taking respective victories over star-studded fields. Joining the SpeedSTRs will be the 602 Crate Modifieds which over the last few seasons continue to gain in popularity at the various northeast tracks they run at. It won't come as a surprise to see some drivers doing double duty between the SpeedSTRs and Modifieds. The 602 Crate Modifieds will have a special night on July 13 with a $1500-to-win Short Track Super Series North Region feature. Another division that will see its share of activity is the 4-Cylinder Stocks that will be run under the SCDRA rules. This class is made up of 4-cylinder front wheel drive cars, all of which made their way to the track after at one time being a daily drivers on the open road. Rounding out the Bloomsburg card will be the Slingshots by Tobias. The Slingshot mimics a scaled down dirt Modified and is powered by a Briggs & Stratton engine. Slingshots give drivers the opportunity to race without the large investment of motorsports and these purpose built race cars are designed for 1/8 to 1/3 mile dirt and pavement speedways. In the case of Bloomsburg a specially designed track will be in place for them. Additional touring groups will be hitting the track as well. IMCA Modifieds, ARDC Midgets, Wingless Sportsman and the 305 PASS Sprint cars all have selective dates inked. Prior to the April 20 opener a Test and Tune will be held on Thursday, April 13 from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm and is open all divisions. Weekly driver meeting will take place at 6:00 pm followed by warm-ups at 6:15. Heats and qualifying will get underway starting at 7:00. Pits will open at 5:00 and grandstands at 6:00. Pits are $30 per person and grandstands are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, active military and students. Kids 6-12 are $5 under 6 are free. - PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY RELEASES 2023 SEASON RACING SCHEDULE
(Perris, CA, December 21, 2022) Even though it is the first week of winter, Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian is reminding race fans of warmer days with the release of the 2023 schedule. The 23 event calendar will commence on March 11th when LKQ Pick Your Part presents Night of Destruction. Eight months later the famous track will close its 27th season with a night of Sprint Car racing headlined by the popular USAC/CRA Series. The entire schedule is available at the bottom of this release. All told, there will be eight Nights of Destruction, eight sprint car programs, and seven PASSCAR/IMCA Stock Car shows. While it sounds the same as years gone by, fans will notice some changes to the 2023 programs. First off will be a change in the Night of Destruction. Joining the Figure 8, Demo Cross, Mini Stocks, and of course, the crowd favorite Double Deckers, will be Mini Stock Figure 8 racing. The Mini Stock Figure 8 will replace Trailer Figure 8 races on the nights of never-ending crashes. "We had been contemplating adding a Mini Stock Figure 8 race for a while," Kazarian said. "During last year's fair, there was a Mini Stock Figure 8 and the crowd loved it. It was exciting and it featured a good size field. So, this year we are adding it to every Night of Destruction. We think it may become one of the most popular portions of the crazy show." Powerful 410 cubic inch Sprint Cars, what the track is most widely known for, will hit the famous half-mile oval for the first time at the annual Sokola Shootout on March 18th. As has been the case since 2004, the USAC/CRA Series will headline each sprint car event. Joining the series at every show will be The PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprints. The POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series made its PAS debut last September and has been invited to race on the sprint car card four times in 2023. In addition, The PASSCAR Super Stocks and Street Stocks will each race with the sprint cars 2 times and the American Factory Stocks will join the open-wheel action on one occasion. In addition to the Sokola Shootout, other special races for the 410 sprint cars in 2023 will be the annual Salute to Indy on May 27th, the 2nd Annual Bubby Jones/Ray Scheetz Memorial on June 10th, and the Glenn Howard Classic on September 23rd. The sprint car season ender on November 11th is normally the prestigious Oval Nationals. However, at this time, that race has been put on ice. "At this time due to the cost of litigation with the Department of Water Resources regarding their future construction in 2023, plus the lack of major sponsorship presently, the 2023 Oval Nationals will not be on the schedule," Kazarian said. "It is more important to ensure the speedway continues to concentrate on the #saveperris efforts." Rejoining the Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Factory Stocks, and the Sport Compacts on the PASSCAR/IMCA nights will be the IMCA Modifieds. In 2022, the modifieds raced on the same card as the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. After a year away, they will be returning to their traditional shows with the stock cars in 2023. The season opener for the PASSCAR/IMCA races will be on April 8th. "For those who have not been to one of our stock car shows, the racing is extremely good," Kazarian said. "Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Factory Stocks, and Modifieds have been staples at The PAS for years and they are all extremely competitive. Last year we added the IMCA Sport Compacts. They got off to a good start but their numbers fell off for a variety of reasons late in the year. We expect them to have bigger fields in 2023 as we have heard that some people are building cars to join the class. The pits are going to be full on the PASSCAR/IMCA nights in 2023." Fans can start making their plans now for the 27th season of PAS racing as the season opener is only 11 weeks away. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds (home of the Southern California Fair), one-hour east of Los Angeles and one-hour North of San Diego. To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway, and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. For directions online, the address to enter is: 18700 Lake Perris Drive and the zip code is 92571. - Christian Wins Antioch Speedway Finale
Antioch, CA...November 26...Morgan Hill's Jimmy Christian won the 25 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night as the season finally came to a close at Antioch Speedway. Christian is a two-time Watsonville Speedway champion, and he led the race from the outset. Early on, there was a battle for second between previous winner Ethon Lanfri of Milpitas and Nathan Schank of Phoenix, Arizona. Following a yellow flag on Lap 5, the two drivers got a little too close for comfort in Turn 4 with both flipping to end their race. Christian led Jacob Tuttle of Oakley on the next restart. They kept that order through a couple of slowdowns. Traffic became a factor late in the race, but Christian made all the right moves to hold off Tuttle for the victory. Brent Steck of Roseville ended up third ahead of Shane Hopkins of Placerville and Josh Young of Roseville. Five-time champion Troy Foulger. of Oakley scored the win in the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event. This was the seventh win of the season for Foulger In the Bowers Motorsports owned entry. Foulger started on the front row and charged into the lead ahead of Randy McDaniel of Olivehurst. Foulger built a half-lap advantage over the past Marysville champion McDaniel by the end of the race. Oakley's Jeff Browne had a good battle going with Olivehurst's Phillip Shelby for third before finally grabbing the spot for good, followed by Danny Malfatti of Hayward and Chris Lewis of Oroville. Trevor Clymens of Brentwood returned to the IMCA Sport Modifieds and won the 25 lap Main Event. He was the top rookie in IMCA Modifieds this year and was a three-time Sport Modified champion prior to that. Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley took the early lead and held it until contact exiting Turn 1 on Lap 9 between he and Clymens allowed Gazelle's Jace Wright, a regular at Siskiyou Golden Speedway, to grab the lead. Wright led until contact in Turn 2 on Lap 19 with Clymens saw him spin. Clymens took the lead at that point and held off State champion Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley the rest of the way for the win. Ryan rebounded for third ahead of Jonathan Hagio of Prunedale and Wright. Ty Carlson of Stockton won the 20 lap Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock Main Event. Carlson is a Late Model racer at the Stockton 99 Speedway, and he took advantage of his front row starting opportunity to lead the entire distance in his first Antioch Speedway start. Carlson charged into the lead when the green flag waved, followed by IMCA Modified racer Terry DeCarlo Jr of Martinez, who was piloting the Kenneth Robles car. Through multiple yellow flags, it was DeCarlo challenging Carlson at numerous points, even pulling side by side at times. During the final few laps, however, Carlson stretched his advantage to score the victory. Jason Poppert of Sacramento was a solid third, followed by Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez and Jeremy Langenderfer of Corning. Mike Learn of Petaluma won the 20 lap Super Stock Main Event. Learn is a past Petaluma and Tri State Pro Stock Series champion, and he started on the front row to take the immediate lead. Richard Vander Ploeg of Oroville ran second for the first seven laps before the only yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for a backstretch crash. Learn continued to lead the restart as champion Jim Freethy of Danville moved into second. Learn pulled away to a straightaway advantage with Freethy a solid second, followed by Mike Walko of Knightsen, Wayne Trimble of Auburn and Vander Ploeg. Dana Gardner of San Bruno won the 20 lap Print Club Mini Stock Main Event. He had a bad start as Merced champion Austin Sprague of Oakdale took the early lead ahead of Dennis Cosens of Mentmore, New Mexico. Costens made an outside pass on Sprague to take the lead on Lap 3, and the two engaged in a close, sometimes side by side battle for several laps. Following a Lap 16 yellow flag for a lost bumper from the Sprague car, third place Gardner moved into the lead. Gardner led the rest of the way to win ahead of Sprague, Costens, Eddie Humphrey III of Torrance and Daniel Bond of Oakdale. Bakersfield's Jerry Flippo won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. Flippo is a multi-time Modified champion at his home track. He jumped into the immediate lead ahead of Fred Ryland of Brentwood. Ryland broke on Lap 10 for the only yellow flag of the race. Flippo scored a convincing victory ahead of Anthony Giuliani Morgan Hill and Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista. - Season Comes To A Close At Antioch Speedway Saturday night
Antioch, CA...The marathon season at Antioch Speedway comes to a close this Saturday night. Over 40 events have been held at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds track this year. Originally, this was to be a two-race weekend, but it's been condensed down to one. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars will be on hand along with the Wingless Spec Sprints, Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stocks and Super Stocks. It'll be the final opportunity to see racing here until next year. The championship season for the IMCA Modifieds came down to a tie. In fact, IMCA did an official audit when they originally had Kellen Chadwick of Oakley leading by one point over Martinez's Nick DeCarlo. It was determined that the tie the track had calculated between the two drivers was in fact the correct. DeCarlo will win the championship based on the fact that he beat Chadwick, four wins to three wins. Bobby Motts Jr will end up third in the final run down ahead of this year's top rookie, Brentwood's Trevor Clymens and Terry DeCarlo Jr of Martinez. The IMCA Sport Modified battle went down to the wire. Andrew Pearce of Oakley seemed good until mechanical issues at the third to last race while leading sent him to the pits. Brentwood's Fred Ryland had four wins this season and beat Pearce by eight points for the championship. Pearce did end up winning three races this season for a strong second place outing, followed by IMCA State champion Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley, Pacheco's Kenny Shrader and Chuck Golden of Pittsburg. Travis Dutra of Concord ended up winning the IMCA Stock Car championship by 20 markers ahead of Jason Robles of Rio Vista. This is the second-consecutive championship for Dutra, who finally got his first win in the season finale. He only missed the Top 5 one time in 12 starts. Jason Jennings of Pittsburg wrapped up third in the standings and top rookie honors, followed by Dave Hill of San Francisco and Antioch's Dave Gonderman. Misty Welborn kicked off the Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock season with three wins in the first four races. The Castro Valley resident cruised to the championship, while Oakley's Michaela Taylor beat Jared Baugh of Pittsburgh by just four points in the race for second. Top rookie Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez ended up fourth ahead of the much improved Jewell Crandall of Antioch. Shannon Newton of Elk Grove wasn't planning on racing for points this year, but the four-time winner ended up winning his second Wingless Spec Sprint championship by 17 points ahead of Oakley's James East. Steve Maionchi of Sonora ended up third ahead of MacKenzie Newton of Elk Grove and Tulare's Zack Neeley. In Super Stock competition, Jim Freethy of Danville picked up his third championship. He picked up four wins along the way, and his title was never in doubt. Brentwood's Joey Ridgeway bested Jimmy Robbins of Concord by just eight points to end up second in the standings. 2020 champion Mike Walko of Knightsen and two-time title winner Mike Gustafson of Concord ended up fourth and fifth, respectively . At this point, it's about the bragging rights and the purse money when these six divisions come to compete this Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20, Senior/Military $15, Kids (5-12) $15 and kids four and under free. - Copeland Wins Sprint Car Showcase At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...November 12...Colby Copeland of Roseville scored the victory in the 30 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The lone appearance for the division at the track this year was billed as the Sprint Car Showcase, and the track hopes to attract a big series race next season. Elverta's Justin Henry jumped into the early lead ahead of Copeland and Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton. The first of three red flags happened for a rollover in Turn 2 by Wayne Katen of San Jose. The race also had a flip by Kameron Souja of San Ramon in Turn 4 on Lap 15. Henry was leading Copeland at that point with Santa Rosa's Colby Johnson up to third. The leaders caught traffic by Lap 19, and Henry suffered a mishap in Turn 4 on Lap 21 as he flipped and lost a wheel. Fortunately, he was uninjured. Copeland inherited the lead over Colby Johnson and Montgomery. Johnson tried to challenge Copeland, but Copeland prevailed for the $2,500 victory. Montgomery ended up third ahead of Brad Bumgarner of Chico and Travis Labat of Livermore. Brandon Shaw of Escalon won The Nighthawk 30 for the Dwarf Car class. Nighthawk Defense Group sponsored the entire purse, and the NorCal Dwarf Car competitor Shaw pocketed $1,000 for the win. David Michael Rosa of Antioch sprinted into the lead at the start ahead of Shaw and David Rosa. Shaw tried a low pass in Turn 1 on Lap 3, only to watch Rosa go by on the inside in Turn 2. However, David Rosa spun on the back stretch and collected Zack Albers of Santa Rosa for a yellow flag moments later. David Michael Rosa continued to lead Shaw and Roberto Monroy of Antioch on the restart. Rosa and Shaw pulled away from the pack when David Rosa hit the frontstretch wall for a Lap 13 yellow flag. Again, David Michael Rosa charged ahead of Shaw and Monroy on the restart. Rosa and Shaw again had their lead battle about a straightaway ahead of Monroy and David Rosa. Contact in Turn 2 between Shaw and David Michael Rosa saw Shaw take the lead on Lap 26. Shaw sped home to the victory ahead of David Michael Rosa, Monroy, David Rosa and Justin Bingman of Castroville. After a week off, the final race of the season takes place on November 26th. In action will be the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars along with the Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stocks. For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com. - Wilson Repeats As Hobby Stock Nationals Champion Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...November 5...Dylan Wilson of Bakersfield won the 50 lap Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the Second Annual Big Jim Pettit Hobby Stock Nationals, and Wilson again picked up $5,000 for his effort as he defended his race championship. Piloting the car normally driven by Bakersfield's Ricky Childress Jr, IMCA Sport Modified star Andrew Pearce of Oakley took the early lead ahead of Jared Baugh of Pittsburg. Pearce had won the preliminary feature a night earlier. Wilson moved into second on a Lap 2 restart with Baugh still holding on to third. They ran that way until the halfway point as Clarence Holbrook III of Galt and Chester Kniss of Antioch were in the Top 5. After a pit crew contest that awarded cash prizes to the top competitors, Pearce jumped into the lead on the restart ahead of Wilson and Holbrook. Wilson got a run on Pearce and took the lead on Lap 28. Holbrook had a good battle going for second with Pearce. He briefly gained the position on Lap 33 before losing it back to him a lap later. They ran that way until the final yellow flag on Lap 46. The restart did not help Pearce, who settled for the $2,500 second as Wilson was the $5,000 winner. Larry McKenzie Jr gained a $1,500 third on the final restart, followed by Holbrook and DJ Keldsen of Watsonville. Drivers had plenty of opportunity to make the big Hobby Stock show with the 10 lap heat races won by Bobby Motts Jr of San Pablo, Aidan Ponciano of Oakley, McKinzie and DJ Kelsen. Kevin Brown of Oakley won the first 20 lap B Main. He led most of it, lost the lead to Holbrook late in the race and regained it a lap later when Holbrook spun. Holbrook recovered in second ahead of James Graessle of Antioch. Grayson Baca of Brentwood rode the pole for the win in the second 20 lap B Main, followed by Rich Lindgren of Oroville and Lance Hurst of Madera. DJ Keldsen scored his first ever 15 lap Figure 8 Main Event win. He is the third generation of his family to win one of these races. The Keldsen family has been big in Figure 8 racing at Watsonville, Antioch and other Bay Area tracks through the years. Hobby Stock point runner-up Michaela Taylor of Oakley decided to run this race and took the early lead ahead of Wayne Reeder of Watsonville. Reeder made a low pass exiting Turn 2 to take the lead from Taylor on Lap 3 with DJ Keldsen following into second. A high pass in Turn 2 on Lap 5 put DJ Keldsen into the lead, and a yellow flag waved for Jimmy Robbins of Concord on Lap 5. DJ Keldsen led Dakota Keldsen of Watsonville on the restart. Angela Brown of Antioch ran third until being overtaken by Robbins on Lap 10. Dakota Keldsen kept it close, but DJ Keldsen prevailed at the checkered flag. Robbins settled for third ahead of Taylor and Brandon Carpenter of Galt. Racing resumes next Saturday night with the Winged 360 Sprint Cars making their only appearance of the season, joined by the Dwarf Cars. For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com. Photo by Katrina Kniss Pearce Wins Opening Night Of The Hobby Stock Nationals At Antioch Speedway Antioch, CA...November 4...Oakley's Andrew Pearce won the 25 lap Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock Main Event Friday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the opening night of the Big Jim Pettit Hobby Stock Nationals, and Pearce was piloting the FND Motorsports Hobby Stock, driven to the Bakersfield Speedway championship by Ricky Childress Jr this year. He is the runner-up in IMCA Sport Modified points this season. After a strong heat race effort, Pearce actually drew the front row for the Main Event and bolted into the lead at the start over Jared Baugh of Pittsburgh. He gradually pulled away to a straightaway advantage, and the race only saw one yellow flag on Lap 23 for a hood on the track. Pearce maintained his advantage over Baugh on the restart and brought it home to a satisfying win. IMCA Sport Modified racer Chester Kniss of Antioch and reiging race champion Dylan Wilson of Bakersfield also made the cut for the big show with DJ Kelsen of Watsonville finishing fifth. They ran two sets of 10 lap heat races with the Top 8 drivers getting to redraw for the first four rows of the Main Event. The first round of heat wins went to Pearce, Syd Finn fin of Atwater, Brad Coelho of Antioch and DJ Keldsen. The second round of heat wins went to Kevin Brown of Oakley, Kniss, Baugh and Wilson.
