- Poirier Doubles Up On Weekend, Wins at Cornwall
By Curtis Berleue (Cornwall, ONT) | For the second time in as many nights, Jordan Poirier found himself in Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Sunday at Cornwall. Having now won 3 out of 5 contested ESS A-Mains, Poirier picked up $2,000 for his efforts on a Sunday night close to his hometown. Drawing the Pinnacle Pole Award was Davie Franek, who consequently led the field to green for the 25 lap main event. Franek jumped out to an early lead over 3rd-starting Joe Trenca and Bryan Cloutier. As the laps clicked away, Franek maintained his lead over the field. Behind him, Poirier was slowly but surely moving forward from his fourth starting spot. By lap 9, he had moved into sole possession of third, and just two laps later stole second, setting his sights on Franek. As the field closed in on 10 laps to go, Poirier closed in on Franek. By lap 17, Poirier had gotten by Franek and never looked back, picking up his third win of 2025. "I was really, really bad at the beginning of the feature," said Poirier. "I was so tight, I knew the top was going to come in at some point it was just a matter of at what point it would because the bottom was slicking off pretty quickly." "When Jason passed me, I thought I might have lost that spot at the beginning of the feature. But yeah, it feels good (to win), the car was great and such an awesome crowd here." For the second night in a row, Jason Barney finished second. "It was nice. That's three races in a row behind the 28," said Barney. I hate getting used to that, but he's doing a good job." "Starting tenth, I was just hoping to maintain to be honest, we caught a few breaks on the restarts, being in the right place at the right time. My car wasn't perfect to start, so that really helped." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third was Logan Crisafulli. "Yeah, it was definitely hard. I thought I got Davie (for third) coming to the white, but everyone's telling me it was coming to the checkers." 20 cars signed in for the second night of the Canadian swing for the Empire Super Sprints, splitting the field into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Alex Therrien, Jordan Poirier and Logan Crisafulli, while Elab Smokers Boutique heats were won by Davie Franek, Jordan Poirier and Logan Crisafulli. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is the annual Central NY Speedweek. Paying $2,500 to win each night, the week gets started on Wednesday July 2 at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville. Thursday will see a visit at the Utica-Rome Speedway, followed by Friday at Brewerton and Saturday at Fulton. The week caps off with the finale on Sunday July 6 at the Weedsport Speedway. - Poirier Picks up First Brockville ESS Win
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ONT) | For the second time in 2025, Jordan Poirier is a winner in Empire Super Sprints competition. Taking an early lead, the Quebec driver never looked back en-route to a $2,000 payday north of the border. Jason Barney drew the Pinnacle Pole Award, and thus led the field to the green flag. A multi-car pileup on the front stretch on the first lap meant a quick restart, and by lap 3 Poirier had gotten by Barney for the lead. After a handful of challenges from Barney, Poirier eventually extended his lead over the field to nearly two and a half seconds. Behind the lead duo, Paulie Colagiovanni was working his way up from his 6th starting position. On lap 12, Colagiovanni got by Logan Crisafulli for third, and set his sights on Barney in second. As laps ran out, ultimately neither Colagiovanni or Barney had anything for the competitors in front of them. Poirier crossed the line first for his second win of 2025 with the Empire Super Sprints, bringing his season win percentage to 50% through four races. "I never have won an ESS race here (Brockville), so it feels pretty good," said Poirier in victory lane. "We tried something with the car and it seemed to work. I guessed he (Barney) was trying to catch me so I ventured out from what I was doing." "It's been a good start to the year. Our GSR chassis is working super good. We did our homework this winter, and it just feels really good." Jason Barney would come home in second. "It's two races in a row that I've finished second," said Barney. "This one I just wasn't aggressive enough in the beginning of the race." "I felt comfortable on the bottom, and just kinda wanted to stay down there and make sure nobody slipped under me. I was just a little too easy." Paulie Colagiovanni rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. "I'm just very thankful for Denny Peebles giving me the opportunity," said Colagiovanni. "I've never really run a Triple X. This is our fourth race with it - we're fine tuning it a little bit and I think we were almost just as good as Poirier." With 18 cars in the pits, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Joe Trenca, Dylan Swiernik and Logan Crisafulli earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards, while Davie Franek, Alex Therrien and Paulie Colagiovanni picked up Elab Smokers Boutique heat wins. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Sunday June 22nd at the Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, ONT. By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | After a week off, the Empire Super Sprints are set to spring back into action this weekend. For the second time in 2025 the tour will head north of the border, this time to the Brockville Ontario Speedway and the Cornwall Motor Speedway. Saturday's visit to Brockville is the first of two scheduled trips to 'The Bullring'. Thus far in 2025, defending champion Jordan Poirier is still atop the points standings with 331 points. He leads Shawn Donath (281 points), Dylan Swiernik (274 points), Davie Franek (270 points) and Jason Barney (257 points). - Franek Wins Second Straight Julia Horton Memorial for $4,000 at Freedom
By Curtis Berleue (Delevan, NY) | For the second straight year, it was Davie Franek sitting in victory lane on the front stretch at Freedom Motorsports Park in Empire Super Sprints competition. Earning $4,000 for his efforts, Franek backed up his 2024 performance in the Julia Horton Memorial on Saturday Night. By virtue of drawing the Pinnacle Pole Award, Franek led the field to green alongside of Jared Zimbardi. Using the high side of the speedway, Zimbardi was able to hold pace with Franek through turns one and two, and by the time the duo got to turn four, Zimbardi had cleared Franek for sole possession of the lead. Over the next handful of laps, Zimbardi led Franek, Jason Barney Jordan Thomas and Matt Farnham. Just as Zimbardi reached lap traffic, the red flag flew for Evan Reynolds who had flipped in turn four. On the ensuing restart, Zimbardi chose the high line and was able to maintain the lead. Just a few laps later, another yellow meant another restart, and a similar outcome as again Zimbardi was able to maintain the lead on the high side. On the third restart shortly after, however, Franek was able to keep pace enough through turns one and two to clear Zimbardi and take the lead. Following along in Franek's tire tracks was Jason Barney, who took over second position. Through one more restart, the running order at the front of the field remained the same and Franek took the checkered flag first, winning the Julia Horton Memorial. "With a full fuel load, we weren't that good at the beginning of the race," said Franek in victory lane. "Once I got by Jared, I started pacing myself pretty decent. I knew if I just kept my speed up I would be good." "The track really came around here at the end, you could be top, middle, bottom. It was really, really good." Jason Barney came home in second, his best finish thus far in 2025. "All those late cautions definitely didn't help us," said Barney. "I got along side of him (Franek) on that last restart and thought I something for a second." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Jared Zimbardi. "The car just didn't take off like I wanted it to and it let Davie get next to me," said Zimbardi. "Car was really good, but those double file restarts can help or hurt you, and it hurt us tonight." 18 cars signed in to Freedom Motorsports Park on Saturday night. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Matt Farnham, Shawn Donath and Davie Franek. Elab Smokers Boutique heat races were won by Jared Zimbardi, Joe Trenca and Jason Barney. The Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Mechanical Service Company was won by Matt Tanner. - Poirier Wins First ESS Visit to Brighton
By Curtis Berleue (Brighton, ONT) | For the second time in as many nights, Jordan Poirier found himself on the podium with the Empire Super Sprints. This time, however, it was one spot better than Friday as he picked up the win at the Brighton Speedway in the tours first ever visit to the Canadian oval. Starting on the Pinnacle Pole was Skyler Evans, and Evans jumped out to an early lead on the field. That, however, was short lived as fourth starting Shawn Donath made quick work of the cars in front of him and jumped out to the lead on lap two. Behind Donath, 6th-starting Jordan Poirier was on a similar trajectory as he moved up to second in just three laps. As the laps clicked off, Poirier held pace and inched ever closer to Donath. On lap 16, Poirier was able to pounce on Donath and grab the lead. Just two laps later, Logan Crisafulli, who started in 7th. He ultimately wouldn't have anything for Poirier though, as the Quebec driver sailed to victory lane for his first win of 2025. "My car was really, really good everywhere," said Poirier in victory lane. "It was classic Brighton, they just put a little bit of water on (before the feature) and it made the track come back alive. The track was perfect tonight." Logan Crisafulli would hang on for second, his first podium of 2025. "It was fun, the track picked up speed quick," said Crisafulli. "It was really fun. I would definitely like to come back again." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery Podium was Alex Therrien. "The top was very good at the beginning of the race," said Therrien. "At the end, the bottom was too though so I tried my best to pick the right line." 28 cars lined the pits for the Empire Super Sprints first visit to Brighton, dividing the field into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek, Alex Therrien, and Shawn Donath. Elab Smokers Boutique heat races were won by Logan Crisafulli, Dale Curran, and Skyler Evans. - Sheridan Wins ESS Opener at Ohsweken
By Curtis Berleue (Ohsweken, ONT) | For the first time since 2015, the Empire Super Sprints made the trip north of the border to the Ohsweken Speedway. Taking on the local regulars, the best 360 sprint drivers in the northeast invaded the Ohsweken oval. In the end, however, it was local Nick Sheridan defending home turf and taking home the win. Pinnacle Pole Draw winner Nick Sheridan would bring the field to the initial green flag along side of Shawn Donath, with Donath taking the early lead into turns one and two. Close behind the lead duo of Donath and Sheridan, Dylan Swiernik and Jordan Poirier battled for 3rd. Before the leaders reached lap traffic, the first caution of the event flew on lap 5 for Glenn Styres and Mike Bowan. When action resumed, the top five of Donath, Sheridan, Swiernik, Poirier and Westbrook remained the same. As the scoreboard hit lap 10, Jordan Poirier worked his way into second, passing both Swiernik and Sheridan, though only momentarily as Sheridan fought back past the Quebec native to regain second. With 9 laps remaining, Sheridan caught Donath and with a run off of turn two, was able to slide past Donath for the lead a they exited turn four. Poirier followed Sheridan past Donath for second, and not long after Swiernik was able to get by the #53 machine as well. Up front, Sheridan had set sail and would lead the remainder of the event en-route to his first Empire Super Sprints victory. "This is something I will never forget," said Sheridan in victory lane. "My first 360 win here, and my first win against these ESS boys, they're the real deal - these guys are really good." "We had a good car, here. We got a little free early, I threw the wing back and changed some shocks around in the cockpit and we got a little better." Jordan Poirier held on for second to start his title defense in 2025. "The track was pretty much in Nationals conditions, so we had a game plan," said Poirier. "Our GSR chassis was really good on this slick track. I showed Nick my lane in turn one and he kept it to pass Donath. After that he was really good and I couldn't catch him." Rounding out the podium was Dylan Swiernik. "It's my first week back, and we worked hard all off season and all of last summer," said Swiernik. "To come up here - I haven't ran all year - and sit third that's good." 35 cars signed into the pits to open the Empire Super Sprints season, which would mean the field was divided into four timed hot lap groups. Earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards were Dylan Westbrook, Davie Franek, Cory Turner and Josh Hansen. Elab Smokers Boutique heat wins went to Dylan Westbrook, Davie Franek, Dylan Swiernik, and Josh Hansen. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main was won by Matt Billings. - Canadian Swing on Tap for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Ohsweken, ONT) | Mother Nature has not been kind to the Empire Super Sprints so far in 2025. After four straight rainouts, the tour will once again look to open their season this weekend. With the forecast thus far looking favorable, Ohsweken Speedway is now set to hold the season opener this Friday, with a trip to the Brighton Speedway on tap Saturday. A regular points-paying tour event has not been held at Ohsweken since 2015. The last driver in ESS victory lane at the Canadian oval was Mitch Brown, on August 7 of that season. With the unique distinction of the only track on the schedule that runs 360 sprints on a weekly basis, a whole host of drivers will be set to defend their home turf against tour regulars. Saturday will be another unique moment in Empire Super Sprints history, as the tour will visit the Brighton Speedway in Brighton, Ontario for the first time ever. In its 40+ years of existence, the Empire Super Sprints have visited 43 tracks in and around the northeastern United States. That makes it a rare occasion when the tour visits a new facility. By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | After two consecutive rainouts to start the 2025 season, hopefully the third time will be the charm for the Empire Super Sprints this coming weekend. Friday, the annual Don Gillette Memorial will now serve as the season opener at the Brewerton Speedway, followed by a trip just up the road Saturday to the Fulton Speedway. In the last two running's of the Don Gillette Memorial, it has been Danny Varin in victory lane. After the originally scheduled points opener at Fulton fell to Mother Nature earlier this season, this Saturday's visit will be the second half of the Memorial Day doubleheader in Central NY. Veteran driver Jason Barney has had a good bit of success at Fulton in recent years. In the last 16 visits to Fulton for the Empire Super Sprints, Barney has won an impressive 8 A-Mains. A $5,000 prize awaits the winner of the inaugural SOS Gold Crown Super Series event on Saturday, June 7 at the Chatham-Kent oval, while each A-Main starter will earn at least $500. Four events at four different tracks are part of the Gold Crown Super Series, including June 7 at Buxton Speedway, June 27 at Ohsweken Speedway, June 28 at Brighton Speedway, and October 4 at Merrittville Speedway. Thanks to the efforts of Nitro 54 Variety, Tammy 10 Media, and Ackland Insurance, all four of these events will pay $5,000-to-win and $500-to-start, with a total purse of almost $18,000 each night. The series is designed to provide maximum value for fans, teams, promoters, and sponsors. "It is widely recognized that owning a 360 Sprint Car in Ontario can be challenging, with unfavorable exchange rates as well as the potential tariff costs," noted SOS owner Peter Turford. "This is our move to help our teams fight the never-ending costs battle. "When combined with Ohsweken Speedway's high-paying events throughout the season culminating with the Northern Sprint Car Nationals, the co-sanctioned event Great Lakes Super Sprints and Southern Ontario Sprints at Buxton on August 23, as well as the Empire Super Sprints series events at Ohsweken, Brighton, Brockville, and Cornwall, there are now several opportunities for teams to compete for higher purses throughout the season in the province of Ontario."
