- Tanner Claims $4,000 in ESS Outlaw Summer Nationals
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | For the first time in 2024, Matt Tanner was victorious in Empire Super Sprints Action at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY. Leading all 25 laps, the Stephentown, NY driver picked up $4,000 for his efforts on Friday night. Shawn Donath and Matt Tanner brought the field to the initial green flag. Utilizing the high side of the track, Tanner got the early advantage off turn four to lead lap one. Behind Tanner, third starting Jason Barney quickly moved into second, with Donath not far behind in third. By lap 5, Tanner still held the lead over Barney and Donath, while Jonathan Preston, Alex Therrien and Billy VanInwegen all battled for positions 4-6. On Lap 8, Tanner caught the back of the field and began navigating lap traffic. As Tanner and Barney sliced through the slower cars, VanInwegen used traffic to his advantage to take sole possession of third place. With the laps clicking by, it looked as though nobody had anything for Tanner. On lap 18, Donath was able to get by Barney for second using the extreme high side of the track, but it was smooth sailing for Tanner as he crossed the line for his first victory of the season. "At the beginning there I was a little nervous running around the top," said Tanner in victory lane. "Toward the end it felt like the top was going away, I tried the bottom and then it kinda cleaned off down there and I wasn't sure what to do at the end." Crossing the line second was Shawn Donath. "He (Tanner) was good early and it took a little bit for the tires to fire," said Donath. "We were just a little bit too late getting going." Coming from his 8th place starting spot, Billy VanInwegen rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We really had a good car, I thought with maybe a yellow around half way we could have had something," said VanInwegen. "We can't hang our heads with third, we're working hard at this deal and making strides for sure." 24 cars signed into the pit area Friday night, splitting the field into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Matt Farnham, Alex Therrien and Matt Tanner. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jared Zimbardi, Alex Therrien and Jordan Thomas, while the Cobra Coaches dash presented by Lanes Yamaha was won by Jordan Poirier. - Empire Super Sprints Set to Close Out July at Outlaw Speedway & Woodhull Raceway
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | As the busiest month of the season winds down, the Empire Super Sprints are set to close out July this Friday and Saturday at the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway, respectively. Friday's stop at the Outlaw Speedway marks the first of what should have been four scheduled stops for the tour at the Dundee, NY oval (the scheduled event in April succumbed to Mother Nature). Sharing the card with the ULMS super late models, the stars of the Empire Super Sprints will compete for $4,000 to win in the annual 'Outlaw Summer Nationals'. Two events for the 360 sprint cars were held at Outlaw in 2023. 'The Juice' Jared Zimbardi broke into victory lane in this event one year ago, while Jordan Thomas is the most recent tour winner at Outlaw, having picked up the win at the 'Outlaw Fall Nationals' last September. Saturday's trip to the Woodhull Raceway will be just the 12th stop in tour history at the Steuben County facility. After a fourteen-year absence, it was Robbie Stillwaggon who sat in victory lane last year, winning over Shawn Donath and Jordan Poirier. Additional support for this weekend's Cobra Coaches Dash series comes from Lanes Yamaha, who will be presenting the dash on Friday night at Outlaw, and Mary Ennis presenting the dash Saturday at Woodhull. Going into this weekend, two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier currently holds the points lead by just 34 points over Davie Franek. 2017 & 2021 champion Jason Barney is currently third in points, with Danny Varin fourth and Matt Tanner rounding out the top five. A full order of events, along with gate times and admission prices for this weekend's events can be found on both the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway's social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints Facebook and X pages. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), X (formerly Twitter - @ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). - Danny Varin Continues Sprint Car Dominance at Fonda Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Fonda, NY) | For the 8th time in the last 9 trips to the Fonda Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints, it was Danny Varin sitting in victory lane at the end of the night. Leading 17 of 25 laps, Varin earned $2,000 for his victory Saturday night, which was also his third tour win in a row and fourth on the season. Josh Pieniazek and Billy VanInwegen brought the field to green, with Pieniazek taking the lead off of turn two. That lead was short lived, however, as VanInwegen fought back on the outside in turns three and four to lead lap one. A red flag for an incident in turn one on lap one put Pieniazek and VanInwegen side-by-side again on the ensuing restart, though this time it was Pieniazek who jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin made quick work of VanInwegen and moved into the second spot with two laps down. For the next handful of laps, Varin stalked the #9 of Pieniazek, searching around the track for a little more speed. Working the bottom on lap 8, Varin was able to get alongside Pieniazek entering turn 3 and by the time the duo reached the flag stand, Varin was in sole possession of the lead. With Varin checked out on the field, VanInwegen continued working on finding his way around Pieniazek for second place, and was successful on lap 15. Just one lap later, Jordan Thomas would also find his way by Pieniazek and take over third. For the second time in two nights, Varin had completely checked out on the field and crossed the finish line first uncontested with a 6 second margin of victory. "I tell you what, my arms are ready to fall off," said Varin. "What a fun race track. It was touch and go on the bottom, but man that was fast." "This team has been firing on all cylinders. We feel really good, 87 Speed has got us really rolling. These guys are making all of the right adjustments in the pits. It's easy to dial yourself out, but right now these guys are doing a really good job." Billy VanInwegen brought his #10V machine home in second place. "Danny has dominated this place for so many years, so to run second to him, we can't hang our head about that," said VanInwegen. "I really wish we could have closed that one out, I think we had a great race car tonight." Finishing third was Harding, Pennsylvania's Jordan Thomas. "We've been pretty fast the last couple of weeks, Speedweek we were fast every night," said Thomas. "Luck didn't go our way that week, and here we are again, last night we were fast, and again tonight." "I think it would have been tonight to make any moves, Danny's so fast and everyone kinda has this place figured out." The field was split into two timed hot lap groups to start the night, with Jordan Thomas and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Fast Time awards. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jordan Thomas and Davie Franek, while Kyle Smith won the One Zee Tees dash. - Danny Varin Gets It Done at Albany-Saratoga
By Curtis Berleue (Malta, NY) | As the summer months keep rolling on, Danny Varin keeps getting hotter and hotter, earning his second Empire Super Sprints victory in a row and third of the 2024 season on Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Emily VanInwegen and Shawn Donath would bring the field to green, with Donath using the outside to his advantage and leading lap one. As the lap counter clicked lap 5, it was still Donath out in front, with Jordan Poirier in second and Billy VanInwegen in third. By lap 7. Donath had caught the tail of the field and began to work lap traffic with Poirier hot on his heels. A caution on lap 11 for leader Shawn Donath with mechanical issues handed the lead to Poirier. On the ensuing restart Poirier jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin, who had restarted in 6th, got a huge run off turn 2 and by the time he reached turn 3 was in second. The next lap, Varin threw a slide job on Poirier, took the lead and began to check out from the rest of the field. With 5 laps to go, the battle for third began to heat up between Davie Franek and Jason Barney. Barney was able to clear Franek, but just one lap later Matt Tanner slipped past Barney and set his sights on second place running Poirier. With a lap to go, Tanner got by Poirier for second, but it was Varin who crossed the finish line first, by a margin of just over 4 seconds. "What a phenomenal racetrack," said Varin. "That was elbows up, pounding the cushion, slidejob city. We've been leading five features here, and never finished one. This has been a long one coming." "That cushion was treacherous, you try to run it hard but you knew you could jump it, and be over it. You had to be patient, you're leading, and let someone show you their nose before you put everything out there." Matt Tanner crossed the line in second after a last lap pass on Jordan Poirier. "We were pretty bad all night, the guys just kept plugging away at it there," said Tanner. "Even the first 15 laps of this race we weren't that good. Three seconds in a row is starting to get old, but at least we're in the hunt." After spending much of the race running second, Jordan Poirier rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We weren't too good early on, after that yellow the first two laps I was good and then I started getting loose in three and four," said Poirier. "I tried to venture out, I tried to find some other lane and I just couldn't do anything. By the end, I was just trying to block and do something. We're just a tiny bit off or something." 22 cars signed into the pits for action on the night. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Jordan Thomas, Danny Varin and Jordan Poirier. Matt Tanner, Danny Varin and Davie Franek picked up E&V Energy heat race wins, while Dale Gosselin won the We Know Tools - Paul Wehnau Snap-on dash.
