- Barney Leads Flag to Flag for CNY Speedweek Win at Brewerton
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | For the second time in 2024, Jason Barney sat in Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Friday night. The last time the Brewerton, NY driver sat in victory lane at his hometown track was over 5 years ago, in May of 2019. After drawing the Pinnacle Pole award, Barney led the field to the green flag alongside Sammy Reakes IV. He would jump out to an initial lead, with third starting Davie Franek getting by Reakes IV and settling into second. A caution and subsequent restart on lap 5 again saw Barney jump out to the lead, with Franek in tow followed by Shawn Donath, Reakes IV and Matt Tanner. Through the mid part of the race, the running order at the front of the field remained largely unchanged. Danny Varin, who had started the event in 7th, and Jordan Poirier, who had started in 12th, were steadily making their way through the field as the laps clicked by. A few late race restarts allowed both Varin and Poirier to work their way into the top 5, but as the checkers flew it was Jason Barney who crossed the line first, leading all 25 laps en-route to his $2,500 victory. "I've lost these races before, I've definitely lost them here at Brewerton on a late restart," said Barney. "I really wasn't sure what to do there." "I took a risk and tried the bottom in (turns) one and two. I missed it a little bit but got lucky, I just tried to cover as many lanes as I could." "I'm just thankful to be here in victory lane after last night; last night was last night and we just move on and try to do our best." After running the majority of the race just outside of the top 5, Chris Hile was able to work his way to a second-place finish, with Jordan Poirier finishing third and rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. Danny Varin finished 4th from his 7th place starting spot, and after spending the majority of the race in second, Davie Franek came home in 5th. Another strong field filled the pits for the Friday night event of CNY Speedweek, with 35 cars signed in for action. The field was split into 4 timed hot lap groups, with Chase Moran, Chris Hile, Joe Trenca and Jordan Poirier earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time honors. E&V Heat race winners were Shawn Donath, Sammy Reakes IV, Jason Barney and Robbie Stillwaggon. The Jakes Grub & Grog dash was won by Dalton Rombough, while Logan Crisafulli picked up the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main victory. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is tonight, Saturday July 6th at the Fulton Speedway in Fulton, NY. - Friesen Finds Victory Lane in CNY Speedweek Night One
By Curtis Berleue (Vernon, NY) | Making a rare sprint car start, NASCAR Truck series driver Stewart Friesen picked up his fourth CNY Speedweek victory and first since 2015 on Thursday night at Utica-Rome Speedway. Driving for Glenn Styres, the now Sprakers, NY driver fended off multiple charges from Jordan Poirier for the $2,500 victory. Pinnacle pole award winner Stewart Friesen brought the field to green with Jordan Poirier on his outside. Going into turn one, Poirier took the early advantage on the outside. Before a lap could be completed, however, the first caution flew for multiple slowing cars. The ensuing restart saw another caution before the field could reach turn 3, this time for Josh Pieniazek in turn 1. The third restart was the charm, though, as a lap was able to be completed and Friesen was able to jump out to the lead. As Friesen clicked off lap 5, he started navigating lap traffic, with Poirier, Billy VanInwegen, Danny Varin and Jordan Thomas in tow. The next lap, however, another caution flew, this time for a slowing Chris Hile. Poirier was able to take full advantage of the restart, as he got a good run around the top and took the lead from Friesen. Behind the leaders, Matt Tanner was the star of the show as he had worked his way from the 22nd starting position to 9th in the first 10 laps. Another caution on lap 12 slowed the field again, and it spelled heartbreak for Tanner as an issue under caution ended his march to the front. Friesen was able to re-take the lead from Poirier on the restart, working the high side. Danny Varin followed in third, with Billy VanInwegen now in fourth and Joe Trenca rounding out the top 5. With Friesen opening up his lead over Poirier, all eyes were on the battle for 5th as Trenca and Davie Franek would trade slide jobs on each end of the track. Friesen was able to continue pulling away from the rest of the field and crossed under the checkers with over a 5 second lead. "That was a blast, big thanks to Glenn and the whole GSR crew, they're building these cars and motors in house now, and they were great" said Friesen in victory lane. "I didn't fire off real good on the bottom on restarts. I would overshoot turn one and then Jordan would get me." "The track was great though, even with as slick as it was we could race all over it." Jordan Poirier crossed the line in second, a solid start to CNY Speedweek. "I tried to start slow, I knew if I started slow I could have the momentum on the top side," said Poirier. "I knew if he got out in front of me, it was going to be tough to pass him." "He was super fast in 3 and 4, and it seemed like my car was just a little bit tighter. Hopefully tomorrow will go just like tonight and we can finish up front." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin. "It was tough tonight," said Varin. "When you start with those guys on the front row its going to be tough to beat them. Hats off to those guys, we made our car better all night but we were just off a little bit at the beginning of the night and were just trying to catch up a little bit. With 37 cars signed in on the night, the field was split into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Joe Trenca, Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier, and Matt Farnham. E&V Energy heat race winners were Joe Trenca, Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier and Jordan Thomas. Shawn Donath picked up the Kinney's Kar Kare dash, and Alex Therrien won the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is tonight, July 5 at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), Twitter (@ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). Consisting of five nights of action in a row at five different tracks, it is one of the most grueling yet rewarding weeks of the season for 360 sprint car drivers in the northeast. This year's version will kick off on Wednesday, July 3 at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, NY. Just minutes from the Canadian border, the 4/10-mile oval is the traditional CNY Speedweek kick-off venue. Last year, Jordan Poirier sat in victory lane to start the week. The following night, Thursday July 4, the tour will head south to the Utica-Rome Speedway. While this is the first trip of the season to Utica-Rome, three ESS events were at the track last year. In 2023, Paulie Colagiovanni, Danny Varin and Matt Farnham all found victory lane at the Vernon, NY facility. Friday night, July 5, will see the second for three scheduled ESS events in 2024 at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY. Earlier this season, it was Danny Varin who sat in victory lane. After the action on Friday evening, drivers and crews can look forward to the annual pit party. One night later, the stars and cars of the Empire Super Sprints will head just a few minutes up the road to the Fulton Speedway for night number four on the week, on Saturday July 6. Two ESS events have already been completed at Fulton in 2024, with Jason Barney picking up the season opener on April 26, and the Memorial Day weekend event on May 25th falling to rain. Rounding out the week will be the first of two stops in 2024 at the Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY. Local modified ace Larry Wight has been tough to beat in a sprint car at the 3/8-mile venue in recent years, having picked up the two most recent A-Mains held in 2022 and 2023. Each event on the CNY Speedweek calendar will see a boosted purse, with the winner earning a cool $2,500. Special CNY Speedweek merchandise will be available to purchase at the ESS apparel trailer in limited supply at each track throughout the week. Additional information for each night, including admission prices and an order of events, can be found on each track's website/social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. - Brewerton, Fulton up Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | Coming off a successful start to the 2024 season just a few short weeks ago, the Empire Super Sprints are set to get back in action this coming weekend for a Memorial Day doubleheader. The tour will stop at Brewerton Speedway on Friday May 24, and then return to the Fulton Speedway for the second time in 2024 the following night, Saturday May 25. Friday's trip to the Brewerton Speedway will be the first of three stops for the tour at the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon' in 2024. The event will once again pay respect to the late Don Gillette, who was a Brewerton, NY native climbing the sprint car ranks before he tragically lost his life at the Trenton Speedway when he was 29 years old. Danny Varin is the defending winner of the Don Gillette Memorial, and Paulie Colagiovanni was victorious in the other two stops at the track for the tour in 2023. Saturday night, the cars and stars of the Empire Super Sprints will move just 25 minutes up the road to the Fulton Speedway, where Jason Barney picked up the season-opening win at the end of April. Barney has been nearly unbeatable at Fulton with 8 wins in the last 13 events held there, and a total of 11 victories dating back to 2014. Coming into the weekend as the points leader, he is sure to once again be a force to be reckoned with at both tracks. Friday night's program will receive extra support from J&Z Snowdrifters, who have come on board to present the Cobra Coaches Dash Series Dash. The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. - Barney Continues Fulton Dominance; Wins ESS Opener
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | The start of a new season brought a familiar face to victory lane Friday night at the Fulton Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints. Jason Barney picked up his first win of 2024 and fourth in his last five visits to the Oswego County oval after coming from his seventh starting position. Pinnacle pole winner Davie Franek and Chad Phelps led the field to the initial start, though the field quickly slowed for a caution for the #68 of Aaron Turkey, a victim of circumstance from hard racing deep in the pack. On the ensuing restart, Davie Franek quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead over Matt Tanner and Phelps. The field again slowed for a caution on lap 4, this time for Mike Bowman who found himself stopped facing the wrong way on the back stretch. By lap 7, defending tour champion Jordan Poirier had entered the mix and was able to take the lead. For the next handful of laps, Poirier continued to grow the distance between himself and second place. Jason Barney, who had moved into second on lap 8, began to close the gap between himself and Poirier on lap 11 when Poirier reached lap traffic. He was ultimately able to use lap traffic to take the lead as the field came to complete lap 19, and never looked back on his way to victory lane. "I was running out of time and running out of chances as the race went on," said Barney in victory lane. "Before that last restart I kind of found the middle, and I rolled by Jordan (Poirier) there. I knew he wasn't going to let that happen again. He went right to the middle and I just had to keep searching around." "He made it interesting, I wasn't sure what to do there, I could tell he wasn't sure to do either and I just stuck it down on the bottom and hoped that we didn't touch." Defending champion Jordan Poirier led a handful of laps early on, and was able to hold on for a second place finish. "My car was really, really good. I just took a safe lap around a lap car, and Jason slid under me there," said Poirier. "We struggle with these kind of conditions, so it feels good to have something to build on for the next few races for sure. Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was hometown favorite Larry Wight. "We were a little bit tight on the bottom, we just had to move around to find out what the car liked," said Wight. "I don't know, even if we had a caution, these guys were in clean air and setting a really good pace. We just needed the lap cars to fall my way a little better." 36 cars signed in to the pits for the 2024 season opener. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Danny Varin, Jordan Thomas, Jonathan Preston and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat race wins went to Matt Tanner, Davey Franek, Dylan Swiernik, and Kelly Hebing. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main was won by Mark Smith, and the Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Dirt Track Digest was won by Mike Bowman. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday May 24th at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY.
