- Franek Bags First ESS Win in Canada at Brockville Ontario
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ON) | For the first time since 2019, the Empire Super Sprints invaded the Brockville Ontario Speedway this Saturday night. At the end of the evening, it was 'No Panic' Davie Franek who was sitting in victory lane at the 3/8 mile oval. Starting from the Pinnacle Pole, Danny Varin took the early race lead over Davie Franek and Alex Therrien. A caution on lap 8 erased Varin's lead, and on the ensuing restart Franek was able to make his way past the #01 to take the lead. Through a few cautions, Franek was able to maintain his lead over the rest of the field. Behind Franek, Varin maintained second through the balance of the event, while Therrien and Billy VanInwegen would swap positions regularly while racing for the final podium spot. At the end of 25 laps, however, nobody had anything for the Wantage, NJ driver and Franek picked up his first Canadian Empire Super Sprints win of the season, and third tour win of 2024. "Last night we were really good late in the race," said Franek. "We kind of applied what we did last night to tonight." "Literally from the drop of the green, the car was good. Danny got out there a little bit the first five or six laps; I knew we were going to get to lap traffic, so I was just pacing myself. He kind of just slipped up on the restart." "If he went high, I was going low, and vice versa. Its my first win in Canada, so this is pretty bad ass." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin in second, and Alex Therrien in third. Jordan Poirier earned the A-Verdi Hard Charger award passing 6 cars to finish fourth, and Friday nights winner Billy VanInwegen completed the top five. With 18 cars in the pits, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Picking up Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards were Shawn Donath, Davie Franek and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat races were won by Matt Tanner, Davie Franek and Joe Trenca, and Logan Crisafulli won the Cobra Coaches dash. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday May 17th at the Utica Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY. - Billy VanInwegen Breaks Through at Can-Am
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | After a multiple podium finishes recently, Billy VanInwegen was finally able to break into Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Friday night at the Can-Am Speedway. Earning $2,000 for his efforts, it is VanInwegen's first win in the Paul Colagiovanni owned number 10v. Starting on the outside of the front row, Sammy Reakes IV jumped out to the early lead over Pinnacle Pole Award winner Matt Tanner. Fourth starting Billy VanInwegen quickly moved into third, before getting by Tanner for second just a few laps later. Continuing his march towards the front, VanInwegen would eventually take the lead from Reakes on lap 10. While VanInwegen set sail in front of the field, Davie Franek, who had started third and fell back as far as fifth, had begun again moving forward. As VanInwegen was taking the lead, Franek moved back into a podium position. 8 laps later, he got by Reakes for second. With just a handful of laps remaining, Franek was unable to catch 'Billy V', and VanInwegen crossed the line first, earning his first win of the season. "My guys worked their tails off all night, just like they do every time we unload," said VanInwegen. "This is huge, we're from down near Orange County, a whole different world than up here really. Hopefully we get to do a lot more racing up here in the next couple of weeks." Davie Franek came home second, just one spot shy of victory lane. "We were definitely coming there at the end," said Franek. "I wish there was a yellow, obviously there wasn't but my guys did a great job on the car all night. We have a good balance pretty much anywhere we go , so we're pretty excited to go to the race track right now." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third was Jordan Poirier. "The way our night started, we were way too tight in hot laps and heat race," said Poirier. "We threw something at it for the feature, we were a little bit tight at the beginning. I was just going to follow Davie and try some different lanes." "After I passed Sammy, the top was just dominate but it was too late to catch Davie." With 16 cars signed into the pits, the field was split into two timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek and Logan Crisafulli, while E&V Energy heat races were won by Davie Franek and Matt Tanner. The Cooks Family Diner dash was won by Shawn Donath. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday August 4th at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. - Franek Wins ESS Feature at Brockville
Davie Franek won the Empire Super Sprints feature Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
- Can Am, Brockville Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | The month of August for the Empire Super Sprints will start out with the first visit of the year to both the Can-Am Speedway and Brockville Ontario Speedway. By this point in the season, both tracks had already hoped to have a visit from ESS in the books, however Mother Nature had other plans as both the tours scheduled visit to Brockville on June 22 and Can-Am on July 3 were rained out. When the stars of the Empire Super Sprints roll north this weekend, two-time champion and current points leader Jordan Poirier will be the one every driver has their sights on to beat as he is also the most recent winner at Can-Am, having won 2023's CNY Speedweek stop at the track. With last year's visit to Brockville also falling to rain, it's anyone's guess as to who could be sitting in victory lane at the 3/8 mile oval. The last time the tour made a stop there was in 2019, and the only active driver with a win at the track in ESS action is Jason Barney, with that win coming 7 years ago. While there are still 12 points-paying races left on the 2024 ESS schedule, the battle in the standings is starting to heat up. Defending champion Jordan Poirier currently sits atop the list with 1117 points, holding a slim 8-point lead over Jason Barney. Davie Franek is third with 1062 points, followed by Matt Tanner and Billy VanInwegen. All persons entering the pits on Saturday at Brockville should be reminded that a digital waiver must be signed per the tracks insurance, and no paper waiver will be available at the track. The waiver can be found at https://bos.speedwaiver.com . The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), X (formerly Twitter - @ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). - Zimbardi Leads Wire to Wire at Woodhull
By Curtis Berleue (Woodhull, NY) | For the second night in a row, it was a new face in victory lane in 2024 for the Empire Super Sprints, as Braford, PA's Jared Zimbardi picked up his first win of the season Saturday night at Woodhull. Almost exactly one year from his last ESS victory, it was Zimbardi's 6th ESS win and 51st career win. After drawing the number two starting spot, Zimbardi used the high side to his advantage on lap one to take the lead over Pinnacle Pole Award winner Kyle Drum. With 5 laps complete, it was still Zimbardi out front over Drum, with Jason Barney third, Shawn Donath 4th and Trevor Years fifth. On lap 6, Barney was able to sneak underneath of Drum coming off turn four to take the second position away. With much of the field using the high side of the track, Barney continued to creep the bottom in an attempt to chase down Zimbardi. Just one caution coming on lap 7 slowed the event, and on the ensuing restart Zimbardi again jumped out to the lead over Barney, with Drum in third. For the second night in a row, Billy VanInwegen was mounting a charge from deep in the field. Starting 10th, he had moved his way into the top five by lap 8. 5 laps later, he secured the fourth spot, and on lap 18 he slid into a podium spot in third. While Zimbardi navigated lap traffic, VanInwegen was relentlessly running the bottom in an attempt to catch Barney for second, and with two laps to go he slid by him. It was too little too late, however, as Zimbardi's half-second lead let him cross the line first. "It was tough to see coming down the backstretch, I wasn't sure but I knew he (Barney) was there," said Zimbardi. "I certainly didn't want to give him the bottom on that restart. You get a nice launch out of turn four, and if I could get him clear go to the top and if he didn't get by me off of two I knew I was good." "Keeping the momentum was tricky around the top, you just miss it by a little bit and you're off the racetrack. The last time I won here was in 2016, so we were long overdue." Finishing one spot better than the night before, Billy VanInwegen came home second, while Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. "I didn't feel good in the heat race, so we went to work and my guys kept making the car better for me," said VanInwegen. "These guys just have no quit in them and I'm super thankful." In two timed hot lap groups, Jared Zimbardi and Shawn Donath earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards, while Jordan Thomas and Trevor Years picked up E&V Energy heat wins. The Cobra Coaches dash presented by Mary Ennis was won by Davie Franek. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Friday, August 2nd at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, NY. - Tanner Claims $4,000 in ESS Outlaw Summer Nationals
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | For the first time in 2024, Matt Tanner was victorious in Empire Super Sprints Action at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY. Leading all 25 laps, the Stephentown, NY driver picked up $4,000 for his efforts on Friday night. Shawn Donath and Matt Tanner brought the field to the initial green flag. Utilizing the high side of the track, Tanner got the early advantage off turn four to lead lap one. Behind Tanner, third starting Jason Barney quickly moved into second, with Donath not far behind in third. By lap 5, Tanner still held the lead over Barney and Donath, while Jonathan Preston, Alex Therrien and Billy VanInwegen all battled for positions 4-6. On Lap 8, Tanner caught the back of the field and began navigating lap traffic. As Tanner and Barney sliced through the slower cars, VanInwegen used traffic to his advantage to take sole possession of third place. With the laps clicking by, it looked as though nobody had anything for Tanner. On lap 18, Donath was able to get by Barney for second using the extreme high side of the track, but it was smooth sailing for Tanner as he crossed the line for his first victory of the season. "At the beginning there I was a little nervous running around the top," said Tanner in victory lane. "Toward the end it felt like the top was going away, I tried the bottom and then it kinda cleaned off down there and I wasn't sure what to do at the end." Crossing the line second was Shawn Donath. "He (Tanner) was good early and it took a little bit for the tires to fire," said Donath. "We were just a little bit too late getting going." Coming from his 8th place starting spot, Billy VanInwegen rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We really had a good car, I thought with maybe a yellow around half way we could have had something," said VanInwegen. "We can't hang our heads with third, we're working hard at this deal and making strides for sure." 24 cars signed into the pit area Friday night, splitting the field into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Matt Farnham, Alex Therrien and Matt Tanner. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jared Zimbardi, Alex Therrien and Jordan Thomas, while the Cobra Coaches dash presented by Lanes Yamaha was won by Jordan Poirier. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday July 27th at the Woodhull Raceway in Woodhull, NY. - ESS Crosses the Border to Brockville, Cornwall This Weekend
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ONT) | Some of the most anticipated events on the Empire Super Sprints schedule each year are always the trips north of the border into Canada. 2024 is no different, and this coming weekend is the first of three border crossings for full-point events for the season. Saturday, the tour will invade the Brockville Ontario Speedway for their first of two trips to the track, and Sunday will be the lone stop in 2024 at the Cornwall Motor Speedway. A strong contingent of ESS regulars is expected to take on some of the toughest Canadian locals. Leading the charge north is current points leader Jason Barney, who, in addition to the success he's been enjoying so far in 2024, will be tough to beat as he is a former winner at both Brockville (2017) and Cornwall (2018) in ESS action. Two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier sits second in points headed into the weekend. The Quebec native and local favorite also has had success at both tracks in the past, notching an ESS win at Cornwall in 2017. All persons entering the pits on Saturday at Brockville should be reminded that a digital waiver must be signed per the tracks insurance, and no paper waiver will be available at the track. The waiver can be found at https://bos.speedwaiver.com . Additionally, all teams looking to purchase medium tires should get their order to Shawn Donath no later than Thursday as only a limited supply will be available at the track this weekend. The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. - Rombough Repeats in Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial at Evans Mills
By Curtis Berleue (Evans Mills, NY) | For the second time in two years, Dalton Rombough picked up $4,000 at Evans Mills Raceway Park on Saturday night in the Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial Asphalt Spectacular. The Lowville, NY driver was the first driver in tour history to repeat victories at the Evans Mills oval. Danny Varin jumped out to an early lead over Pinnacle pole winner Logan Crisafulli, with Dalton Rombough and Matt Tanner settling in behind him. Rombough, however, made quick work of Crisafulli for second and got by him just a handful of laps later, setting his sights on Varin for the lead. Closing quickly on Varin, Rombough was soon at Varin's bumper and was able to slip underneath Varin exiting turn two for the lead. Behind Rombough, Matt Tanner had caught the #01 of Varin and was all over his bumper for second until a mistake entering turn two just after halfway let Kelly Hebing slip by him. As the laps clicked by, and with Rombough checked out, Hebing meticulously stalked Varin, eventually getting by him to take second. With over a half track lead on Hebing for second, Rombough went unchallenged for the remainder of the event and picked up the $4,000 victory. "We took a little stagger out, dropped the wings and made a little bit of air pressure adjustments after the heat," said Rombaugh. "The track kinda came to us a little bit in the feature and it worked out pretty well tonight." Kelly Hebing crossed the line in second after starting sixth. "It was good, I can't complain. I can't lie either and say I don't want one spot more," said Hebing. "When I saw halfway it was time to go and get around Varin." "Not two laps later, I snapped my brake pedal and had to move my line up a little to keep my momentum up. I was able to tuck in between two lap cars and make one big car so Danny couldn't get me back." Danny Varin, winner of the event two years ago, crossed the line in third for another podium finish. "The guys worked hard, trying to make the car better," said Varin. "We just missed it today; we weren't really good in hot laps and made it a little bit better in the heat race. We went in the right direction for the feature, just needed a little bit more." Picking up E&V Energy heat wins on the night were Logan Crisafulli and Dalton Rombough. As part of the evenings special events, fans in attendance were also able to get up close and personal with the stars of the Empire Super Sprints for an on track autograph session and both Rombough and Hebing participated in a 'pie in the face' contest to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network of Northern NY. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Saturday June 22nd at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in Brockville, Ontario, followed by a trip to Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ontario the following evening.
