- Inaugural High Limit Racing Diamond Classic headlines Lucas Oil Speedway 2024 tentative schedule
WHEATLAND, MO. (Nov. 20, 2023) - Lucas Oil Speedway has unveiled its 2024 tentative schedule and, along with traditional major events, the speedway will welcome the acclaimed High Limit Racing series for sprint cars. The Inaugural High Limit Racing Diamond Classic is scheduled for June 28-29 with many of the best in open-wheel sprint-car racing expected to compete. High Limit Racing, founded and owned by NASCAR champion Kyle Larson and five-time World of Outlaws champion Brad Sweet, is expanding in 2024. The formerly named High Limit Sprint Car Series is adding events and increasing driver payouts while broadening its partnership with FloSports. The mid-week race series will evolve into a 50-plus race night schedule across the country and increase driver payouts to more than $5 million. Lucas Oil Speedway will be a part of the weekend schedule for High Limit Racing. High Limit Racing will award a point fund of $1 million with the champion team and driver winning $250,000. Similar to its 2023 season, High Limit Racing will have a Midweek Money Series within the national tour awarding a separate $100,000 total point fund. "We are excited to be a part of High Limit Racing in 2024 as part of our tentative schedule, which includes our usual mainstay events such as the Show-Me 100, Hockett-McMillin Memorial and Kentucky Drag Boat Association events on Lake Lucas," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. "High Limit Racing is an opportunity to bring even more world-class racing to our fans and we thank Brad Sweet, Kyle Larson and their series for working with us to make it happen." Sweet will compete in every event and pursue his first High Limit Racing championship with the Kasey Kahne Racing NAPA No. 49 team. Larson, crowned the midweek series champion earlier this month, will continue to compete in select events while also pursuing a NASCAR Cup Series championship and an Indianapolis 500 victory in 2024. Other highlights among many special events at Lucas Oil Speedway include the 32nd annual Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 during Memorial Day Weekend (May 23-25) and the 18th annual CMH Diamond Nationals (July 13), both featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The MLRA Late Models are on hand three other times - for the 11th annual Spring Nationals Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts (April 12-13) with the POWRi Super Stocks and Show-Me Vintage Racers; the 10th annual MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios (Aug. 30-31) and a combined multi-day MLRA Fall Nationals and 8th annual Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt for Super Stocks (Oct. 3-5). The 11th annual Summit USRA Nationals will run a bit earlier in 2024, set for Sept. 17-21 right after the 14th annual ASCS/WAR Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial Sept. 12-14. Open-wheel cars will be featured two other times as well, at the 13th annual Impact Signs, Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown (May 4) and the POWRi Summer Thunder (Aug. 17). The track opens with an Open Test & Tune on March 30 and the Easter Bowl Enduro 150 is set for April 6. The Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series opener is scheduled for April 20. Lorton also has announced that the speedway will sanction Hermitage Lumber Late Models under POWRi for 2024. The Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will compete in the Weekly Series along with the Arctic Food Equipment Modifieds, Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars. "I've had talks with Kenny Brown (POWRi President) and to help grow the weekly Late Model class and give drivers a national points fund, we have agreed to sanction the Late Models under POWRi," Lorton said. "POWRi will be using the 2024 speedway rules package for the Late Model sanctioning class, which will be known as POWRi Late Models." Drag Boat racing on Lake Lucas, featuring the Kentucky Drag Boat Association, has three events set: the KDBA Summer Thunder on Lake Lucas (June 8-9), KDBA Show-Me Shootout on Lake Lucas (Aug. 2-3) and 14th annual Diamond Drag Boat Nationals (Aug. 30-Sept. 1). One of the biggest Weekly Racing Series events on the schedule, the annual Casey's Thursday Night Thunder Kids' Night at the Races Plus Fireworks is set for Thursday, July 4th. Season champions will be determined for the Weekly Racing Series at the Rempfer Memorial Bill Roberts Chevrolet-Buick Season Championship Night on Aug. 24. The popular Kids' Power Wheel races will return as well with a 24V-36V class. The races will be held during intermission during Weekly Championship Series races April 20th, May 11th, June 8th, July 27th and Aug. 24th. - Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt returns to Lucas Oil Speedway next fall, along with MLRA Fall Nationals
WHEATLAND, MO. (Nov. 10, 2023) - One of the biggest events in the nation for Super Stocks is returning to the Lucas Oil Speedway schedule in 2024 with the 8th annual Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt set for next Oct. 3-5. The Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals also return to the schedule and will be run in conjunction with the Big Buck 50, making it a lucrative, action-packed weekend of Late Model and Super Stock racing at the same location. Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said he has been fielding inquiries about Super Stocks returning, possibly as a guest class a few times next season. A meeting with Craig Danuser, the race's former sponsor, led to bigger things. "I reached out to Craig, who was the main sponsor of the Big Buck 50 and was involved in the making of the original event," Lorton said. "He seemed very interested as we talked, so we set up a meeting and after the meeting I could see he was very excited in returning and bringing back the Big Buck 50." The eighth version of the Big Buck 50 event will be run using POWRi Super Stock rules and Lorton said officials will also work on the rules to allow the Arkansas cars that used to run the Big Buck 50. More details on rules and entry fees will come at a later date. The Big Buck 50 will begin with practice and qualifying on Thursday night Oct. 3, qualifying heat races to help set the feature field on Friday leading into Saturday night's 50-lap main event, in which the winner will take home $10,000. The winner also will earn a free entry, valued at $3,195.00, into the prestigious Whitetail Trophy Hunt in mid-Missouri next November. For more information on the Whitetail Trophy Hunt, visit Whitetail.net. This year's hunt begins this weekend and it's the 35th edition for the long-sold-out event, which is limited to 220 hunters. Over $4 million in cash and prizes has been awarded in the hunt's history. The Big Buck 50 was held on an annual basis at Lucas Oil Speedway through 2020 and was a one of the highlights on the schedule. Danuser said he's thrilled to help bring back the Big Buck 50. "I'm excited about it and I know a lot of racers are excited about it," Danuser said. "They've been burning my phone up about it." Danuser said the Big Buck 50 had become a destination weekend for the Super Stocks in its previous runnings, with racers and many fans spending the weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway in the campgrounds. That should get nothing but even bigger with the MLRA Late Models also a part of the action. "So many people started making that their vacation, bringing the wives and kids because it was a three-day event," Danuser said. "I think they really looked forward to it in the five or six years we had built the race up." Meanwhile, the Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals also return to the schedule with a big two-night show paying $5,000 to win the Friday-night feature and $10,000 on Saturday. "I know that Ernie Leftwich (MLRA Series Director) was very excited to bring back the Fall Nationals and tie it back in with the Big Buck 50 as they were both on the same weekend for several years," Lorton said. "It only seemed fitting to bring them both back together." Lorton said the tentative 2024 Lucas Oil Speedway schedule is nearing completion and will be released in the near future. - CHAD SIMPSON CAPTURES 4TH MLRA CHAMPIONSHIP AS DILLON MCCOWAN EARNS SUNOCO ROOKIE TITLE
Wheatland, Missouri (November 8th, 2023) - While mother nature may have played havoc with a consider amount of the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) schedule in 2023, at the end of the day two drivers still stood tall above the competition. Chad Simpson took control of the top spot by virtue of his victory at the Davenport Speedway on April 13th and never looked back, cruising to a 270 point margin in the championship race over brother Chris Simpson. While the Simpson brothers controlled the top two spots in the final season rundown, 19 year-old Dillon McCowan used a third place finish in the championship battle to secure the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year title, topping a rookie class of seven up and coming drivers. CHAD SIMPSON GOES BACK-TO-BACK FOR 4TH MLRA CROWN Chad Simpson's run to a 4th MLRA Championship started soon after the Mt Vernon, IA racer clinched the 2022 series title. The driver of the Ideal Ready Mix/Randy Davidson Trucking # 25 knew going back-to-back in the MLRA would not be easy task, which led him to make one of the biggest and most challenging changes to date in his racing career as he transitioned from a Black Diamond to a Longhorn by Wells Chassis. "I knew I needed to make a change over the winter, which is obviously not an easy financial decision to make. I'm fortunate to have such a great group of sponsors that came through to help me make that change, and to run good right out of the box I think was rewarding for everyone involved. It definitely was not a dominating championship, but definitely one that I guess came with the most confidence and support I've had from everybody." "We were pretty excited going into this year with the new car, knowing that the Longhorns were pretty much the top tier and dominant all of last year," explained Simpson. "After the first weekend down at Wheatland we ran second to (Jonathan) Davenport and that right there was a huge confidence boost for us and everybody that is involved with us. I kinda felt like I had the feel back after that weekend, maybe a feel that I had been missing for a couple of years in the seat," noted Simpson. In his nine non-co-sanctioned MLRA starts, Simpson tallied six top 2 finishes, half of which resulted with trips to Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane. His three victories on the season moved his career MLRA win total to 19, now placing him 11th on the all-time series wins list. As a six-time Champion of the former Corn Belt Clash Series and now a four-time MLRA champion, Simpson says that every title is a little different in its own right. "My confidence level going into this year was just that much higher than some of the past championships. Out of all of the MLRA championships that I have won I felt like the equipment that I had going into this year, making the switch to Longhorn and the help from Wells, just gave me some added confidence. And having all of my sponsors to be able to put me into that position was huge." Simpson joins elite company with his 4th series title, as he ties the series winningest driver Terry Phillips with four Championships. The duo of Simpson and Phillips trail only five-time champ Alan Vaughn and upcoming Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Al Purkey, who was a series leading 7 x champion. Chad Simpson will collect $20,000 for his share of the over $50,000 Lucas Oil MLRA Championship point fund, in addition to a host of contingency awards from series sponsors. Simpson also earned the season long overall Fast Time Award Presented by MyRacePass. "First and foremost, I've got to thank my family. They have stood behind me through my entire racing career. They enjoy it and love it, so having them behind me in what I love to do is obviously most important to making this happen." "I've been out on my own since 2019, and it's definitely been challenging financially. This sport is getting more and more expensive and just crazy to try and be able to compete and be up there with the top drivers in the country. Every little bit that everyone has given me and my team over my career, and especially the backing and support that I had from everyone when I went to make this change to Longhorn, has been really outstanding. I think along with that support, it obviously showed up in our performance and in how comfortable we were this year, and the guys were all having fun." MCCOWAN TOPS "SUNOCO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR" BATTLE From the onset of the 2023 season Dillon McCowan made it clear that the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award would have to go through the 19 year-old from Urbana, MO. McCowan led the first 13 laps in the opener at the Lucas Oil Speedway back in April, and went on to record a total of 11 Rookie of the Race honors to lock up the MLRA's coveted Rookie award. McCowan made the jump into the late model ranks after winning 18 races in 2022 that also resulted in a national runner-up finish in his USRA Modified. "It was a big change for us trying to get into the swing of this whole late model scene and trying to get the whole team jiving and everyone knowing their role of what to do," noted McCowan. "And for me, as a driver it definitely took a lot of laps this year to get comfortable in the cars and knowing what to do and when to do it. " The driver of the Sonic Longhorn Chassis finished his inaugural MLRA season with 8 top ten finishes and 3 top five finishes, to go along with an impressive 6th place run in the Show-Me 100 at the Lucas Oil Speedway. "Going to a lot of these tracks, especially for me, not so much Tim (Douglas-Crew Chief), but for me seeing these tracks for the first time and seeing how they raced and seeing what the track does throughout the night was a big learning curve. When you go from north to south the dirt changes a lot, and so throughout the night you definitely had to pay attention a lot, especially running with these guys. The tracks change drastically throughout the night, so it definitely made me pay attention a lot more as a driver and having Tim as a crew chief when he came on board it helped us a ton." In addition to his $7,500 check for third in the series overall standings, McCowan will receive $2,000 and 3 drums of racing fuel from title sponsor Sunoco Race Fuel, along with a set of shocks from Fox Racing Shocks. He will receive additional contingency awards from MD3, Strange Oval, Earnhardt Technologies, Fast Shafts, and Swift Springs. "I definitely think we met our expectations in my eyes and in the teams' eyes really. We didn't have the best year, but for rookies I felt like we had a pretty good year with the races we had and making a lot of the shows that we run in. I feel like there were several nights that we could have done better and probably left a little bit on the table just because we were new to it and made a few errors here and there. Other than that, I think it was a pretty good season for us." - Twelve memorable moments from 2023 Lucas Oil Speedway season
WHEATLAND, MO. (Nov. 3, 2023) - With the final checkered flag having waved on the 2023 Lucas Oil Speedway season, it's time for our annual review of the "Diamond Dozen," a top 12 moments of the season. The list is compiled by Lucas Oil Speedway public relations director Lyndal Scranton with an assist from track announcer Shane Friebe. 1 - Huge crowd, big names, thrilling finish: One of the biggest motorsports events in southwest Missouri history lived up to its billing as a familiar face visit victory lane as the Camping World SRX Series came to Wheatland on Aug. 17. Jonathan Davenport, putting on a display worthy of his nickname of "Superman," led all 90 laps to capture the SRX Thursday Night Thunder season finale in front of 8,710 roaring fans and countless others watching on ESPN. Davenport, one of the world's premier Dirt Late Model drivers, won for the fifth time at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2023 adding to four Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series/Lucas Oil MLRA wins. The Blairsville, Georgia, native emerged from a thrilling battle with Clint Bowyer after a restart with 10 laps remaining that had the big crowd on its feet. Brad Keselowski rallied from 10th to finish second with Ken Schrader third and Ryan Newman, the 2023 Camping World SRX champion, taking fourth. "I'm speechless. This is awesome," said Davenport, a five-time World 100 winner and three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion. "I was just out there pacing myself, trying to keep the edges on the tires and do dirt-guys stuff." 2 - Wild and Wacky Show-Me 100 to Moran: The 31st annual Show-Me 100 Presented by Missouri Division of Tourism had a little bit of everything as it was wild and crazy, rough and tumble and had post-race controversy. Devin Moran, second under the checkers, was declared the victor when apparent race-winner Ricky Thornton Jr. was penalized four positions in post-race inspection. "What the hell?" Moran asked in victory lane after claiming the $50,000 first prize. "This is like the best, worst win of my life. I just won the frickin' Show-Me 100 and $50,000, but Ricky was the best car in the field." Moran, 28 of Dresden, Ohio, claimed the win after he finished just under one second behind Thornton. But a few moments later, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series officials announced that Thornton's car was in violation of the "droop rule" regarding the height of the rear deck. Tim McCreadie wound up officially in second with Spencer Hughes third, defending champion Chris Ferguson fourth and Thornton eventually penalized to fifth place. Local favorite 19-year-old Dillon McCowan of Urbana was sixth. Thornton, of Martinsville, Ind., led the final 43 laps in a race that turned into survival of the fittest with 13 caution flags and a track that had plenty of character - especially over the final half of the event. Asked how long it was going to take for it to set in that he was a Show-Me 100 champion, Moran shook his head. "I have no idea," Moran said. "There might be an asterisk by it, but it's gonna pay 50 grand one way or the other, so we're gonna take it. And we're gonna drink some beer tonight." 3 - Cox's challenging season capped by Fall Brawl win: What had been a challenging season for Tucker Cox at Lucas Oil Speedway, including a massive crash that sidelined him for nearly two months, ended with his biggest triumph in the late-September Inaugural Fall Brawl. The Jefferson City driver, who broke his foot in a hard crash in mid-April, took control late in a wild State Tech Hermitage Lumber Late Model Fall Brawl to walk away with the $4,000 winner's check. The rare daytime event, moved up in anticipation of evening rain, turned out to be a memorable one with Cox scoring an emotional win in his new Capital Race Car. Cox was running fourth or fifth most of the race, but pounced when misfortune found frontrunners Justin Wells and Johnny Fennewald in a wild last 10 laps. Cox took the lead on lap 34, lost it to Tommy Cordray on lap 36 and regained it the next time around in the 40-lap main event. "I was just trying to be patient," Cox said. "I had to calm it down. I was getting a little too anxious there the first 15 or 20 laps. "I apologize to Cordray, for getting into him, but I wanted to win really bad. We were going for four grand, so rubbin's racin." 4 - Morton doubles up before fireworks at Thursday Night Thunder: Lucas Oil Speedway's annual Casey's Thursday Night Thunder to kick off 4th of July weekend was extra memorable for JC Morton as the Springfield driver had a career night. Moments after winning the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature, Morton captured his first Hermitage Lumber Late Model feature victory. While he's won countless times in his B-Mod over the years, the Late Model win was specia. He was driving the car for Moon Brothers Racing out of Sedalia. Morton held off veteran Justin Wells, the Lucas Oil Speedway runaway Late Model points leader, for the win. "We've been really close," Morton said of the Late Model. "We've had a bunch of seconds. I keep giving Justin a hard time to just let me win, but finally it all came together." 5 - Thornton scores MLRA Spring Nationals win: Showing signs of a year for the ages was ahead, Ricky Thornton Jr. got to the lead early and there was no stopping him as a star-studded field of drivers took part in Night 1 of the 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Spring Nationals Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts. Thornton earned $5,000 for his second career MLRA victory, dominating a field of 48 Late Models that checked into the pits for the opener of the weekend. Thornton went on to dominate the regular season on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and win 36 features overall. "We were really good there," Thornton said after the Spring Nationals victory, which attracted a large and deep field as national-touring series events scheduled for this weekend were rained out. "We practiced really good yesterday and I was super comfortable. It was a good night." 6 - Popular win for a USRA Modified veteran: A late-July Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series event was highlighted by a popular win for veteran Terry Kirk after his victory in the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified feature. "You bet, I did hear those," Kirk said of the cheers in victory lane. "I was surprised, but you know, I've been around forever. I've run a lot of races over there at Wheatland. I won a lot of races back before it was Lucas Oil and before it had a wall around it." Back in the days of Wheatland Raceway, Kirk raced there and all over the place and won his share of races. The last few years, he's slowed to a part-time schedule with more focus on helping his son, Colson Kirk, campaign a USRA B-mod. Kirk joked that he can't remember the last time he won a feature at Lucas Oil Speedway just saying it's been "a long, long time." The Urbana resident was in vintage form, leading all 20 years for the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified victory as he outdistanced season points leader Ryan Middaugh. 7 - Sanders breaks Ramirez's Show-Me Shootout dominance: One of the most-successful drivers in United States Modified Touring Series history put an end to Dereck Ramirez's domination at Lucas Oil Speedway. Rodney Sanders, of Happy, Texas, led all 50 laps to hold off Ramirez in 14th annual USMTS Summit Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment. Ramirez had won the early August race the three previous seasons, but Sanders kept him from making it four in a row and took home the $10,000 payday. He also expanded his season points lead in a bid to make it five USMTS championships. "Dereck is super good here," Sanders said. "He's been really getting himself going lately and I knew he would be hard to beat." 8 - Fastest lap in speedway history, then a feature victory: Garet Williamson went from the fastest driver to ever record a qualifying lap at Lucas Oil Speedway to the 25-lap POWRi 410 Outlaw Bandit Sprint Series feature winner on Aug. 19. The Columbia, Mo., driver set a track record in qualifying with a lap of 12.998 seconds. The lap eclipsed the record of 13.019 by Jason Meyers in a World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race at the speedway in 2010. That earned Williamson the pole and he went on to lead the main event wire-to-wire and take home $5,000. It was the first-ever POWRi 410 Sprint Series appearance at Lucas Oil Speedway and Williamson made it memorable. "This means everything to me. It feels really good to win this close to home," Williamson said. "This is pretty neat." 9 - Beck masters art of last-lap pass: Mason Beck of Urbana led only one lap, but it was the most important one. Beck overtook race-long-leader William Garner on the final circuit on June 24 to claim the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature. It was one of three last-lap passes Beck would pull off for wins during the season. Beck, who started eighth, battled his way through the field and into contention midway through the race. A four-way for second saw Beck emerge and begin his chase of Garner. Beck was on the leader's back bumper by lap 13 with Johnny Fennewald about five car lengths behind in third. Beck went to the high side coming to the white flag and pulled slightly ahead of Garner coming out of turn two. He then won a drag race coming off turn four to the checkers to score his third feature win of the season. "That was the most-exciting race I've ever been a part of," Beck said. "From fifth on - me, Waylon (Dimmitt), (James) McMillin, Fennewald - it was hard-fought and clean racing all the way to the checkered flag." 10 - What an opener as Stacye wins a thriller: In the Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series opener on March 25, Cayden Stacye of Fair Grove pulled off a last-lap pass of Bobby Williams of nearby Hermitage to pick up the feature victory in the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods. Stacye drove past Williams on the inside of the final turn of the final lap and held on by a car length for his first Lucas Oil Speedway feature win. "I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to get it done, with (Williams) on the pole there those last two laps," Stacye said. "I just knew that I had to get a good jump and we just kind of went from there. I just drove it hard and ended up on top." 11 - Young Timms rolls to Hockett-McMillin win: Youth was served as 17-year-old Ryan Timms led all but the first lap while capturing the 13th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial ASCS Winged Sprint feature during the prestigious open-wheel event delayed a night by mid-September rain. The Oklahoma City driver picked up $10,000 for the American Sprint Car Series victory after taking command on lap two and never looking back, holding off runner-up Jason Martin. In the POWRi WAR Sprint main event, 25-year-old Ricky Lewis of Camarillo, Calif., outdueled Xavier Doney in the late stages to earn the $4,077 first prize. 12 - Williams wins race within the race on championship night: There was drama at the front and drama further back in the field in the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod main event on Rempfer Memorial Season Championship Night in late August. Kris Jackson picked up the victory with a last-lap pass, but Bobby Williams celebrated the championship with what was probably the best 10th-place run of his career. The Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod division was the only undecided class entering championship night and the race within the race for the points crown was just as fun as the battle for the race victory. Williams, of Hermitage, claimed championship No. 1 after not winning a feature all season. But he was a mark of consistency, with eight top-five finishes and 14 top-10s. He beat JC Morton by a mere five points in the title chase. "This season we've faced a lot of adversity at this track. It's been a love-hate relationship for us here," Williams said, adding that the championship was special for reasons other than himself. "I wanted this for my niece. She has heart surgery here in a few weeks, so we're glad to do that for her." Other season champions were Mason Beck (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars), Ryan Middaugh Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds) and Justin Wells (Hermitage Lumber Late Models). - Lucas Oil MLRA Season Finale at Lucas Oil Speedway canceled due to forecast of rain, cool weather
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 27, 2023) - With an unwavering forecast of persistent rain and cool temperatures on Saturday night, the Lucas Oil MLRA Season Finale racing program at Lucas Oil Speedway has been canceled. POWRi Super Stocks and USRA Modifieds also had been scheduled to compete. "We waited throughout the week, hoping that the weather system and forecast would change course, but it's apparent that is not going to be the case," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. "Because so many of the drivers and fans were going to travel a significant distance to race with us, we wanted to make the call far enough ahead of time to save them travel." Chad Simpson and brother Chris Simpson wind up 1-2 in MLRA points with Chad Simpson, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, claiming his second consecutive series championship. It's his fourth title to go with ones in 2014, 2018 and 2022. Sunoco Rookie of the Year Dillon McCowan of nearby Urbana wound up third in overall points. Daniel Hilsabeck and Trevor Gundaker were fourth and fifth with Justin Duty, Jeff Herzog, Garrett Alberson, Tyler Stevens and Dustin Hodges rounding out the top 10. Lucas Oil MLRA officials had hoped to conclude the season on the track after the originally scheduled MLRA Championship Weekend at Tri-City Speedway set for earlier this month was rained out. 2024 MLRA Open at Lucas Oil Speedway: Lucas Oil MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich said the 2024 Lucas Oil MLRA schedule is set to kick off with the MLRA Spring Nationals March 22-23 at Lucas Oil Speedway. Support classes will be the POWRi Super Stocks and Show-Me Vintage Racers. The rain date for that event is April 12-13. Lucas Oil Speedway banquet next: With the racing season now concluded, Lucas Oil Speedway has scheduled its annual Postseason Championship Banquet, honoring season champions in each of the four Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series divisions, for Dec. 1 in the Center Hall of the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield. Tickets are $40 or $400 for a table of 10 and can be reserved by calling the speedway office at (417) 282-5984. RSVP deadline is Nov. 9. - McCowan eager to celebrate top rookie honors in MLRA Season Finale on home track of Wheatland
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 25, 2023) - It seems fitting for Dillon McCowan that the Lucas Oil MLRA's final race of the season, following a schedule adjustment, will be at his home track of Lucas Oil Speedway. McCowan has clinched Sunoco Lucas Oil MLRA Rookie of the Year honors after a stellar first full season in an open Late Model. He's third overall in points, behind Chad Simpson and Chris Simpson and set to receive recognition as top rookie at Saturday's scheduled MLRA Season Finale. Lucas Oil Speedway and the MLRA added the $10,000-to-win event after the MLRA Season Championship weekend was rained out earlier this month at Tri-City Speedway. "When I saw that, I was pretty happy," the 19-year-old McCowan, of nearby Urbana said of the added race at Wheatland. "We've been kind of trying to figure where we're gonna try to race at the end of the year and when they said that race was gonna be at Lucas, I was happy to get back over there in front of all the fans and my family can come over there. "To get to crawl up on the stage, if we can win this rookie deal, that can be really cool for us." McCowan has some momentum on his side coming into the one-day show after picking up his first career Late Model touring series feature win. That came last weekend on the Comp Cams Series at Super Bee Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana. "That was definitely a fun race. There was some stiff competition down with Tyler Stevens, Billy Moyer and Billy Moyer Jr., and quite a few other good drivers and teams," McCowan said. "We started back in sixth and were able to rally to the front and just maintained once we got into the lead and hold on for 40 laps. "That track is super fun. We had only raced there once before and that was in a Modified. I was excited to get back down there and give it a run." McCowan said the first touring-series win checked off a goal he hoped to accomplish before the conclusion of the season. "It didn't really matter what series it was with," he said. "To do it with Comp Cams and beat the guys that were there, and to achieve one of my goals, it was definitely a big accomplishment for me and my team. We were pretty stoked about it." This weekend, he will realize another goal with the top rookie honors on the MLRA circuit. He called his first full Late Model season everything he expected, and then some, with a sixth-place run in the Show-Me 100 back in May as one of the top moments of his career. "I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's what I've always wanted to do and what I've dreamed off since I was a little kid," he said of driving the Late Model against top competition. "I've definitely learned a lot from the guys I've raced with. It's been a big learning experience for me and hopefully we can take this momentum into next year." Plans for 2024 are not finalized. He said following the Lucas Oil MLRA is an option, along with hitting select races on different series including the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. But for now, the focus is on completing the current season on a high note - and hoping Mother Nature cooperates and Saturday's race is able to go on. Chad Simpson and Chris Simpson will enter the Wheatland race as the top two drivers in the series standings with Chad leading his brother by 270 points. McCowan is in third with Daniel Hilsabeck and Trevor Gundaker fourth and fifth with Justin Duty, Jeff Herzog, Garrett Alberson, Tyler Stevens and Dustin Hodges rounding out the top 10. POWRi Super Stocks and USRA Modifieds also are on the schedule for Saturday and another sponsor has stepped up to support the Super Stock class. James Ray with Ray's Lake Service has donated $500 for Hard Charger award and is adding $50 to 2nd-11th place positions in the Super Stock Feature payout. It was previously announced that Whitetail Trophy Hunt will sponsor the POWRi Super Stocks portion and the feature winner will earn $2,000, courtesy of Craig Danuser with Whitetail Trophy Hunt. Nitro Nick Motorsports also has added money to Super Stock positions 18th, 20th, 22nd and 24th. The Super Stock payout will be: 1st - $2,000. 2nd - $850. 3rd - $750. 4th - $650. 5th - $500. 6th - $350. 7th - $300. 8th - $250. 9th - $225. 10th - $200. 11th - $180. 12th - $120. 13th - $110. 14th-17th - $100. 18th - $150. 19th - $100. 20th - $150. 21st - $100. 22nd - $150. 23rd - $100. 24th - $150. Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton also has announced that David Hendrix, owner of Hendrix Construction, will sponsor the fast time qualifier for the Super Stocks. The driver to set fast time in qualifying will receive $500 for Fast Time Qualifier thanks to Hendrix Construction. Hickamo Country Store owner Chip Shaddox is helping sponsor the USRA Modified class and it will now race for $2,000 to win and $100 has been added to finishers two through 11. The Modified payout: 1st - $2,000. 2nd - $900. 3rd - $800. 4th - $700. 5th - $550. 6th - $400. 7th - $350. 8th - $300. 9th - $275. 10th - $250. 11th - $230. 12th - $120. 13th - $110. 14th-through-24th - $100. Both support classes will use time trials for heat-race starting positions just like the MLRA Late Models will do. Pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with grandstands at 4, hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6:05. Wheatland, Missouri (October 24th, 2023) - The Lucas Oil MLRA will give it one more go at a season finale this coming Saturday, October 28th, when the series rolls into the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO for the 9th time in 2023. The impromptu season finale comes about after the 4th Annual MLRA Championship Weekend was washed out two weeks ago at the Tri-City Speedway. The 2023 campaign will come down to a one night stand at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks", with a $10,000 to win and $700 to start season Finale headlining the nights action. "Mother Nature has had the upper hand in 2023 with eight total rainouts on our schedule, commented MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich. "When we were not able to schedule a return to Tri-City due to scheduling conflicts, we knew coming to Wheatland was our next best option for crowning our series Champion and Sunoco Rookie of the Year on the track. If anyone has the facility to get this show in, it's Danny Lorton and his staff at Lucas. We can't thank them enough for extending their season and putting this event together for the racers and fans alike." Joining the Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will be the USRA Modifieds and POWRi Super Stocks. Each will pay $2,000 to win and follow the same MLRA time trial qualifying format. CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE- Chad Simpson enters the finale poised to wrap up his 4th career Lucas Oil MLRA title. The Mount Vernon, Iowa driver holds a 270 point advantage over younger brother Chris Simpson. Chad Simpson will become the first driver to go back-to-back with the MLRA since 2011 - 2012, when John Anderson last completed the feat. Thus far, in non co-sanctioned MLRA events Chad Simpson has just one finish outside the top 10, that being an 11th place run back in April at the 34 Raceway. His series leading 3 wins also comes with an impressive avg finish of 3.67. This will mark the 3rd time that the driver of the Deuce Nickel has wrapped up the title at the Lucas Oil Speedway. He polished off his 2018 title in style, by winning the season finale and will try to do so again this weekend. A feature win would send him back to the Hawkeye state with $30,000 in his pocket, with the series champion receiving $20,000. Brother Chris Simpson holds a comfortable, but not fully secured, 100 point advantage for the series runner-up position over Dillon McCowan. Chris will be seeking his highest finish ever in the season long MLRA standings and is also set to collect a $10,000 payday from the MLRA point fund if he can maintain the advantage over McCowan. Chris Simpson has 16 MLRA wins to his credit dating back to 2009, and will be looking to get the monkey off his back and score his first MLRA win in Wheatland in the finale. Daniel Hilsabeck and Trevor Gundaker round out the top five. Representing six through ten are Justin Duty, Jeff Herzog, Garrett Alberson, Tyler Stevens, and series rookie Dustin Hodges. SUNOCO ROOKE OF THE YEAR- McCowan has all but wrapped up the series coveted Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year award for 2023, fending off a host of drivers in one of the strongest rookie classes in a number of years. The 19 year old from Urbana, MO has three top fives in MLRA action, two of those being third place podium runs coming in just the last 3 MLRA races of the season. McCowan will be back in familiar territory this weekend as he looks to wrap up the rookie crown, but more importantly he will be looking to score his first career MLRA victory. McCowan scored a $5,000 victory this past Friday at the Super Bee Speedway in Chatham, LA. TURN-FOUR NOTES- Finale In Wheatland: Saturday will mark the 7th time in the MLRA's storied 35 year history, and first since 2019, that the season finale takes place at the Lucas Oil Speedway. Chad Simpson is the only driver to date to have won both the season finale and Championship in Wheatland on the same night. Series officials have already announced that the 2024 MLRA Championship weekend will return to the Tri-City Speedway. One-Two Punch: The brotherly due of Chad and Chris Simpson have put up some remarkable stats in 2023. Most impressively may be the fact that the Iowa boys have went 1-2 on four different occasions. Wins for Chad at Davenport, Lake Ozark and Lucas Oil Speedway, with Chris grabbing a "W" in the family affair at Lake Ozark as well. The most recent top two sweep came at Lucas on the final night of the Ron Jenkins Memorial back on September 2nd Elite Company: A 4th MLRA Championship for Chad Simpson would put him in an elite club of drivers to have won four or more titles. He would join the series winningest driver Terry Phillips with a fourth championship, and trail only Alan Vaughn (5 championships), and Al Purkey (7 championships) in the records books. Contingency Awards Up For Grabs: Not only will Championship point funds be up for grabs, but a pair of season long contingency awards are still undecided heading into the weekend. A pair of series regulars are knotted up atop the "MD3 Hard Charger" standings in Justin Duty and Jeff Herzog. MD3 will present an overall hard charger worth $500 at the conclusion of the season. In addition, the MyRacePass "Overall Fast Time Award" it yet to be decided. Chad Simpson is the highest ranking MLRA member driver with two Fast Time Awards, while a number of other drivers are within striking distance with one each. Purkey To Hall of Fame-- It was announced this past weekend that 7 x MLRA series Champion Al Purkey of Coffeyville, KS will be inducted next summer into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 class. MLRA would like to congratulate Al on this well deserved accomplishment. - Lucas Oil MLRA Season Finale, plus added money for Super Stocks, Modifieds coming up Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 23, 2023) - Since Lucas Oil Speedway added a big finish to its season headlined by the Lucas Oil MLRA, extra money has been added to support divisions for this Saturday night's program. The MLRA Season Finale for the Late Models has $10,000 awaiting the winner and $700 to start the main event. The Season Finale was added to the schedule after the series' Championship Weekend was rained out at Tri-City Speedway. Added money also will be awarded in the support classes. Hickamo Country Store owner Chip Shaddox is helping sponsor the USRA Modified class and it will now race for $2,000 to win and $100 has been added to finishers two through 11. The Modified payout now will be: 1st - $2,000. 2nd - $900. 3rd - $800. 4th - $700. 5th - $550. 6th - $400. 7th - $350. 8th - $300. 9th - $275. 10th - $250. 11th - $230. 12th - $120. 13th - $110. 14th-through-24th - $100. Meanwhile, it was previously announced that Whitetail Trophy Hunt will sponsor the POWRi Super Stocks portion and the feature winner will earn $2,000, courtesy of Craig Danuser with Whitetail Trophy Hunt. Nitro Nick Motorsports also has added money to Super Stock positions 18th, 20th, 22nd and 24th. The Super Stock payout will be: 1st - $2,000. 2nd - $800. 3rd - $700. 4th - $600. 5th - $450. 6th - $300. 7th - $250. 8th - $200. 9th - $175. 10th - $150. 11th - $130. 12th - $120. 13th - $110. 14th-17th- $100. 18th - $150. 19th - $100. 20th - $150. 21st - $100. 22nd - $150. 23rd - $100. 24th - $150. "We appreciate everyone who has stepped up to add to the prize fund for the Super Stocks and Modifieds," Lorton said. "This is shaping up to be a great way to conclude the season, with great fields in each of our divisions." Both support classes will use time trials for heat-race starting positions just like the MLRA Late Models will do. With previously scheduled events already filling up the October calendar at Tri-City, officials concluded that a make-up weekend at the home of the MLRA Championship would not be possible. So the MLRA finale now becomes a one-day event with the season champion crowned. It also will mark the final opportunity of 2023 for drivers to accumulate MLRA points toward the series championship, Sunoco Rookie of the Year, as well as the season-long contingency awards, some of which are still up for grabs. Chad Simpson and Chris Simpson will enter the Wheatland race as the top two drivers in the series standings with Chad leading his brother by 270 points. Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon McCowan is in third. Daniel Hilsabeck and Trevor Gundaker are fourth and fifth with Justin Duty, Jeff Herzog, Garrett Alberson, Tyler Stevens and Dustin Hodges rounding out the top 10. Pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with grandstands at 4, hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6:05. - TOTAL DOMINATION-- PIERCE SCORES $10,000 WIN IN 3RD ANNUAL WIENER NATIONALS
Moberly, MO (September 3, 2023) - Bobby Pierce showed total dominance on Sunday night in what was a picture perfect evening in the running of the 3rd Annual Wiener Nationals at the Moberly Motorsports Park. Pierce pulled the clean sweep on the night, starting off by grabbing the $1,000 MyRacePass Quick Time Award, followed by a heat race win that placed him on the pole for the nights 30 lap main event. Pierce started alongside of Jeff Herzog and wasted no time in showing that he would have the car to beat from the drop of the green flag, but it was all for not on the opening lap when third starting Mason Oberkramer spun in front of field in the first turn bringing out the nights first of four cautions. Pierce would bring the field to the green once again and jumped out to a full straight a ways advantage in just a handful of laps with MLRA rookie Dillon McCowan holding down the second spot. The only thing to slow Pierce on the night was a heavy pack of lapped traffic that allowed McCowan to quickly close in on the leader. However, for McCowan that opportunity quickly evaporated as once Pierce was able to clear the pack he jump right back out to a considerable advantage, leaving McCowan to scramble his way through the same traffic. The final caution of the night slowed the field with just 11 laps to go. On the restart, Pierce and his Vic Hill powered Longhorn Chassis quickly left the field as he cruised to his 11th career Lucas Oil MLRA win by a margin of 3.074 seconds, cashing in on the $10,000 main event payday. Chris Simpson used the final restart to charge past McCowan and held on for a runner up finish for the second consecutive night. McCowan's third place run netted him his second podium finish of the season while MLRA point leader Chad Simpson finished a sold fourth with just three points events remaining on the season. Justin Duty collected his first top five of the season and rounded out the top five. Duty's late race pass of Jeff Herzog also netted him his second "Swift Springs Move of the Race". Podium Finishers: 3rd Dillon McCowan (Left), 1st Bobby Pierce (Center), 2nd Chris Simpson (Right) Photo: Lloyd Collins, FastTrack Photos. Pierce commented on his at times breath taking run through lapped traffic in saying, "The lapped cars made it a little scary sometimes, I just tried to take my time and get through it the best I could and get some distance on second." "The car was really good," he continued in Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane. "We didn't have to touch it too much tonight with the track staying fast. This is one of the first races in a long time that my dad hasn't been at. They went home to get ready for Eldora, but we were on the phone a little bit tonight. I got to give a huge thanks to my crew and all these fans for coming out here tonight." Chris Simpson's back-to-back runner up finishes on the weekend helped to erase a run of bad luck on Friday that forced him into a back up car. Coming home in second he said of the run. "Anytime you put a cushion on a race track and Bobby out front your probably not going to pass him. To run second to him I'll take it, and to run 1 - 2 for Hoker. It was good points night for us after we had a bad night on Friday, so we'll take it now." The 19 year old McCowan continued his strong Sunoco Rookie campaign with another podium run. "After the runs we've been having and the couple three months we've had with bad luck and not having good runs it felt so good to finally be up front mixing it up and having a car good enough to contend with these guys. They were fast and I was definitely able to learn a lot from them tonight. This was my first real big track in a super late model, so I'm extremely excited about our run." Just three nights remain on the 2023 Lucas Oil MLRA schedule. Up next will be a make-up event on Thursday, October 12th at the Adams County Speedway in Quincy, IL paying $7,000 to win. The season will conclude with back-to-back nights of action at the Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon City Beach, IL on October 13th & 14th with $5,000 and $7,000 to win events respectively. - CHAD SIMPSON TOPS MLRA FIELD FOR $11,000 RON JENKINS MEMORIAL WIN
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 2, 2023) - Chad Simpson cemented his Lucas Oil MLRA championship points lead and enjoyed a lucrative payday on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Simpson, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, led the final 34 of the 40-lap Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios. Simpson earned $11,000 for the triumph, including a $1,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins, original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Mary also will awarded a $500 bonus to Simpson as fast-time qualifier on Saturday night. Simpson beat his brother, Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, by 3.5 seconds for the victory in the 40-lap main event after settling for second the night before. "Two great nights for us," Simpson said. He increased the points lead to 290 over Chris Simpson with just four MLRA races remaining in pursuit of a repeat series championship and his fourth overall to go with titles in 2014, 2018 and 2022. "We had a good hot rod, but we started to hurt the right rear tire and I'm glad it's over," Simpson said afterward. The first seven laps of the MLRA feature saw three lead changes. The Simpson brothers started together on the front row and Chris Simpson led the opening three circuits before Tony Jackson Jr., took over the lead with an inside pass off turn two on lap four. Three laps later, Chad Simpson moved to the front as he sailed around the outside of Jackson off turn four - just before the race's first caution for a two-car spin at the back of the field. Chad Simpson executed a flawless restart and rolled to a 1.3-second lead over Chris Simpson before a lap-10 caution for a slowing Aaron Marrant took away that margin. The leader once again set sail as the green flew and, with a clear track ahead, opened a 2.9-second lead by the halfway mark. That's when the event's third caution appeared as Justin Wells came to a stop on the front straightaway. Daniel Hilsabeck, who started seventh, rallied into third with Dustin Hodges fourth with Jackson in fifth. By lap 24, Dillon McCowan was in fourth after starting the race 11th and starting to apply pressure to Chris Simpson and Hilsabeck as the slowing car of Jackson led to caution No. 4. Following another caution on lap 27, Chad Simpson soon opened his biggest lead of the race, 2.7 seconds by lap 34. Simpson encountered lapped traffic the rest of the way, but was able to weave through it to preserve his third MLRA feature win of the season. He beat Chad Simpson by 3.5 seconds as fireworks lit the sky as he took the checkers. "Early on there, those guys got a little better jump on me but I knew the top would come in eventually, at least a little bit," Chad Simpson said. "Just hats out to all the sponsors who help me on this thing. But this one here, it's big hats off to my crew guy. He told me mid-race to get off the top and get down to the middle and I was able to pull away." Hilsabeck finished another 3.2 seconds behind Chris Simpson for third, Hodges was fourth and Matt Johnson captured fifth. "It really dictates off of four," Chris Simpson said of the chance to overtake Chad on the lap-27 restart. "Daniel kind of hooked me on that last restart and got me sideways and let Chad get out. Once he moved to the middle, it was over. "They've had a good car and congrats to them. Randy Davidson (Trucking) is our sponsor and he got me and Chad one and two, so I'm sure he'll be throwing some beers back here in a little bit." For the second straight night, Chad Simpson set fast qualifying time. His lap of 15.610 was an omen of things to come as he went on to win his heat and the main event. It was Simpson's fifth overall win of the year. Podium: Chris Simpson 2nd (Left), Chad Simpson 1st (Middle), & Daniel Hilsabeck 3rd (Right) McCowan, of nearby Urbana, finished sixth and maintained his stronghold on the MLRA Rookie of the Year race. Kaeden Cornell of Willard finished seventh and Cole Wells of Aurora was eighth. - Chad Simpson cashes big on Night Two of Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway
Other feature winners on Night Two were Kris Jackson (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Nic Bidinger (Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds) and Mason Beck (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars). McCowan, of nearby Urbana, finished sixth and maintained his stronghold on the MLRA Rookie of the Year race. Kaeden Cornell of Willard finished seventh and Cole Wells of Aurora was eighth. Jackson completes USRA B-Mod sweep: Kris Jackson completed a weekend sweep in the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod division, this time with a drive from 15th at the start to first and needing only 11 laps to do so. The Lebanon driver beat Dayton Pursley by just over one second for his fifth Lucas Oil Speedway win of the season and 39th overall. "We didn't have a very good heat race. We couldn't get in our rhythm and tires hooked up for the heat," Jackson said. "It buried us. But we're gonna make a late charge at this USRA points thing and this was a good points night." Pursley set the early pace as action was slowed by three cautions before three laps were completed. But Jackson already had advanced to sixth by lap five. Pursley's lead was 1.9 seconds over Casey Thomas by the mid point on lap 10 but Jackson made it to third when a caution flew. Jackson immediately drove to the lead on the restart and pulled away from there to complete the weekend sweep. He finished 1.1 seconds clear of Pursley with Eric Turner third, Thomas fourth and Colson Kirk fifth. Bidinger leads all the way for USRA Modified win: Nic Bidinger of Perry, Kan., led all 20 laps to capture the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified feature over Ryan Middaugh. Bidinger started on the front row and wasted no time taking command, opening a 3.01-second lead over Middaugh by lap 10. Even as he found lapped traffic over the final half of the race, Bidinger maintained a comfortable command en route to winning at Lucas Oil Speedway for the second straight weekend and fourth time this season. His margin was 3.09 seconds at the finish over Middaugh, the Night One Jenkins Memorial winner. Kameron Grindstaff finished third with Kerry Davis fourth and Jason Pursley fifth. "I said it last week when we were standing up here, this CDR (Cade Dillard Racing) car is fast," Bidinger said. "This week, I didn't screw it up. Last week, the setup wasn't very good. Tonight we were spot on. I have to thank all my guys." USRA Stock Cars win goes to Beck: Season champion Mason Beck of Urbana led flag to flag for his seventh O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature win. Beck started up front and led all 20 laps, opening a commanding 3.1-second lead over Brandon Conkwright halfway through the race and wound up with the same margin at the checkers. Conkwright had a 1.7-second margin over third-place Waylon Dimmitt. Beck was happy to improved one spot from his runner-up finish on Friday. "We had a pretty good run last night. I didn't really want to have to go side-by-side all night, so we got her a little better for tonight and ended up winning it," Beck said. "And I forgot to say this last week, but I do believe that I have the fastest Stock Car in the state of Missouri." William Garner came home in fourth with Pat Graham in fifth. - Stevens rolls to first career MLRA victory in Ron Jenkins Memorial opener at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 1, 2023) - Fourth-starting Tyler Stevens of Paragould, Ark., scored his first career Lucas Oil MLRA victory Friday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Stevens took the lead midway through the 30-lapper and went on to beat Chad Simpson on Night One of the Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios. Stevens earned $5,000 for the victory in dry-slick conditions. Other feature winners on the first night of the special were Kris Jackson (Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Ryan Middaugh (Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds) and Waylon Dimmitt (O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars). There were 34 Late Models and 101 total entries in the pits on Friday night. Stevens, a series rookie who came in ninth in points, chased down and passed Simpson on lap 16 as the leader got pinched in lapped traffic. Stevens called his win a much-needed boost to his team. "We have had the worst luck this year," Stevens said. "New car, new motor, new shocks, new everything. It feels good. I knew we had a heck of a hot rod, we just needed to put it all together." Simpson set fast qualifying time and won his heat to earn the pole. He capitalized on that by taking the lead from the start, with a one-second advantage over Stevens eight laps into the race. Catching lapped traffic by lap 10, Simpson had to carefully pick his way through the slower cars and Stevens was able to pull alongside on lap 15 before taking the lead on lap 16 after Simpson had trouble navigating through turn two. "I was worried I was gonna wear the right rear (tire) out, but the car was so good I could steer around there and didn't have to really slide," Stevens said. "I was pretty patient there, running up behind Chad. He was committed pretty much to the bottom and when he got into that lapped traffic, I knew if he didn't work his way up and find that clean area of the race track, I thought I could roll by him here. "The MLRA has some awesome racers. It feels good to be on top of the podium." Simpson, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, said the lapped traffic did him in but it was a good points night as he continued pursuit of his fourth MLRA championship. "We had a good night, the car's good, we just didn't quite get tight enough for the main," Simpson said. "I got beat in lapped traffic. I got one back home in lapped traffic a couple of weeks ago, so maybe that's mine back." The new leader drove away to a 1.3-second lead with 10 to go as the race's long green-flag run continued all the way to the finish. Meanwhile, as Stevens set the pace up front, Dillon McCowan got around Scott Crigler for third on lap 26. Simpson came rolling in the final laps to make a run at Stevens, but settled for second just .328 seconds behind Stevens. McCowan wound up third with Crigler fourth and Logan Martin in fifth. Chris Simpson, who began the night 165 points behind his brother Chad in the MLRA points chase, went to his backup car for the feature and started at the rear of the field. He finished 15th and lost considerable ground, falling to 240 points behind with just five events remaining. McCowan, the popular local driver from nearby Urbana and the MLRA Rookie of the Year leader, scored his first MLRA podium finish. He moved to third in series points. "It's been a long, long last couple of month," McCowan said. "Ever since the Show-Me (100) we've been battling this thing. The track was amazing. Smooth and slick. You could about race wherever you wanted. "I guess I started driving it a little harder and it freed up the car a little bit and I was able to get around Crigler and start catching (Stevens and Simpson). A couple of more laps and I think we could have been dicing it up with them for the lead." Action resumes on Saturday night with first place worth $11,000 to the MLRA Late Model winner. The total includes a $1,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins, original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Mary also will award a $500 bonus to fast-time qualifier on Saturday night. Pit and spectator gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05. Jackson drives to B-Mod wins: Lebanon's Kris Jackson picked up his 38th overall feature win in 2023 and fourth at Lucas Oil Speedway, leading the final 15 laps of Friday night's Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod main event. "This track was great for the feature," Jackson said. "It kind of favored a person like me. I like the middle of the race track and it was probably the prime groove for the better part of the race." Jackson moved from his third starting position to challenge Newell for the lead on lap one, but Newell held him off and had a .720-second lead when the race's first caution waved on lap five. Jackson found traction in the low groove to pass Newell for the lead on lap six, but action was quickly slowed again just a lap later with another caution. Andy Bryant moved into second on the restart and stayed on the high side to battle it out with Jackson. Just as Jackson opened up a 1.2-second lead on lap 11, another caution came out to bunch the field. Finally getting an extended green-flag run, Jackson drove away over the final nine laps for a 3.2-second win over Bryant with Eric Turner coming home in third, Robbe Ewing fourth and Newell finishing fifth. USRA Modifieds victory goes to Middaugh: Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified track champion Ryan Middaugh of Fulton led all but the first lap en route to his 17th overall victory of the season and sixth at Lucas Oil Speedway, beating Jared Russell and Jason Pursley. Middaugh assumed the lead on lap two when he got around fellow front-row starter Pursley. Over the next several laps, Middaugh ran the low side as Pursley worked the high groove to break away from the third-place Russell by 1.5 seconds. As the laps clicked by, regular-season track champion Middaugh gradually began to pull away to lead Pursley by 1.2 seconds by lap 12. The leader caught lapped traffic by lap 16 just as Russell moved around Pursley and into second. Middaugh held on to beat Russell by 1.02 seconds at the finish with Pursley third, Robbie Reed fourth and Gunner Martin fifth. "Lapped traffic got a little hairy there," Middaugh said. "I wanted a caution, but I didn't want a caution. I just wanted to see the checkered flag." Dimmitt rolls to USRA Stock Cars win: Camdenton's Waylon Dimmitt earned his fourth O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars victory of the season, leading all 20 laps to top track champion Mason Beck. Dimmitt started on the pole and set the early pace, with Pat Graham advancing from sixth to second by lap two and Beck running third. The trio broke away and it was well back to William Garner in fourth by lap 10. Dimmitt was able to extend his lead to 1.5 seconds by lap 12 as Graham and Beck were dueling side by side behind him. Garner soon joined the battle to make it a three-way race for the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, Dimmitt kept pulling away as the race stayed caution-free. He prevailed by 2.9 seconds at the finish with Beck edging past Graham for second on the final lap and Garner finished fourth. "These are the kind of tracks we shine on," Dimmitt said. "I hate racing in the mud. It was good and slick tonight. I kind of wish it was that way every night." Pit and spectator gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05. - TYLER STEVENS SCORES FIRST CAREER LUCAS OIL MLRA WIN IN JENKINS MEMORIAL
Wheatland, MO (September 1, 2023) - Tyler Stevens jumped when the opportunity presented itself on Friday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway, and became the newest driver to visit Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane. Current Lucas Oil MLRA point leader Chad Simpson came out of the gates hot during night # 1 of the Ron Jenkins Memorial, picking up his first MyRacePass Quick Time Award of the season with a lap of 15.591 seconds, followed by winning his respective heat race to put himself on the pole for the 30 lap main event. The nights only caution came out on the initial start when sixth starting Cole Wells spun in turn three, setting up a complete restart. On the restart, Chad Simpson quickly shot to the race lead and began to stretch out a one second advantage over the field as he circled the low line of the Lucas Oil Speedway. Simpson would catch the tail of the field just before the half-way point, all the while Stevens was quietly running a mid to high line. As Simpson crossed the stripe on lap 15 he dove to the bottom and was pinched into the infield tires in turns one and two as he tried to put the car of Glen Powell a lap down. The contact was enough to slow the momentum of the leader and allowed fourth starting Stevens to shoot by for the race lead off the exit of turn two—a move that earned him the Swift Springs Move of the Race. Stevens, behind the wheel of a Longhorn Chassis, would officially take the top spot from Simpson on the nights 16th lap. From there Stevens reversed the roles and built a near one second advantage over the three time MLRA Champion Simpson. With 14 laps to go, Stevens still had to navigate his way through lapped traffic and at the line the Searcy, Arkansas did just that, collecting his first career Lucas Oil MLRA win by just .328 seconds over Simpson. Sunoco Rookie of the Year Leader Dillon McCowan was able to work his way into a podium position at the drop of the checkered, marking his best career MLRA finish to date for the 19-year old. Outside front row starter Scott Crigler held onto fourth, while Logan Martin raced from 11th to 5th at the checkered. Chris Simpson entered the night second in MLRA points and was forced to go to a back-up car for the main event. The Oxford, IA driver moved up from 24th on the grid to 15th at the end to earn the nights MD3 Hard Charger of the Race Award. "Man, you have no idea," exclaimed Stevens in Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane of his excitement. "We have had the worst luck this year. New car, new motor, new shocks, new everything and it feels good. We had a little bad luck at the Topless a few weeks ago and I knew we had a heck of a hotrod and we just needed to put it all together." "I thought I was a sitting duck," he commented of the early laps of the main event. "I knew Chad and Mason (Oberkramer) and (Scott) Crigler they all had 40's on the right rear and I was the only one with a three, so I was worried I was going to wear the right rear out, but man the car was so good I just steered around there and didn't really have to slide. I was pretty patient there and ran up behind Chad and he was pretty much committed to the bottom and then when he got to that lapped traffic I knew if he didn't move way up and find that clean area of the race track that I thought I could roll by him." "They are awesome racers, the MLRA's the best there is, they've proven throughout the the past few weeks they can go run with any of these guys and it feels good to be on top of the podium," concluded Stevens. For Simpson, the runner up finish was a bitter result to swallow, but it allowed him to expand his point lead with just five nights remaining in the season. "The car is good, we just didn't quite get tight enough there for the main and got beat in lapped traffic. I got one back home a couple of weeks ago in lapped traffic so maybe that's mine back." "I just messed around with them (lapped traffic) way too much and when you are racing with these guys you got to go and if you try to hold up and try to pass cars it will cost you," concluded Chad Simpson. Saturday, the tension builds for night two of the 9th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial. The Lucas Oil MLRA will battle for $10,000 to win in a 40-lap main event that will include an additional $1,000 Bonus to the winner courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt, in Memory of Ron Jenkins, the original builder of Wheatland Raceway. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Chad Simpson has repeat MLRA championship in sight entering Ron Jenkins Memorial
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 30, 2023) - Chad Simpson holds a seemingly comfortable 165-point lead in pursuit of his fourth Lucas Oil MLRA championship entering this weekend's two-night Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios at Lucas Oil Speedway. But you won't catch the 44-year-old from Mount Vernon, Iowa, taking anything for granted with just six events remaining on the MLRA schedule. What looks safe today is a bad night or two away from becoming a tense chase. "The car and everything is feeling good, but it's like everything else," Simpson said Wednesday in previewing the weekend and his top-dog status. "You can't slip up or give anything up. You have to be ready to go every week." Action fires up on Friday with drivers chasing a $5,000-to-win feature with Saturday night's main event winner taking home $10,000 plus a $1,000 bonus courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins, original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Mary also will give a $500 bonus to fast-time qualifier on Saturday night. The MLRA weekend will conclude with a Sunday show at Moberly Motorsports Park. That leaves only three October events remaining, so this weekend will shape how much mystery remains in the title chase. Simpson, with two MLRA victories and four top-five finishes this season, is looking to defend his series championship to go with other MLRA points titles in 2014 and 2018. His brother, Crhis Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, is the nearest pursuer with Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., 195 behind. "Obviously the goal is to go out and win races, but what you do when you're point racing like you are, you have to play it a little smarter at times," Chad Simpson said. "Maybe you can't get as aggressive or as greedy sometimes when you want to win the race." For instance, top-three finishes this weekend would make it difficult for anyone to make a major dent in his lead. Winning a fourth title, and becoming the first MLRA repeat champ since John Anderson 2011 and 2012, carries a lot of meaning. Winning again as a driver-owner also would be special. Simpson did so for the first time in 2022. "It's definitely been the goal," Simpsons aid. "We started the year out with a new car and program this year. With all the help Longhorn and Wells Motorsports in helping us get this thing going, it's put us in position to hopefully get that fourth title. "Every one is special in their own way," Simpson said of series championships. "Every year is new challenges and new adventures. Every one is just as important as the other one. Especially in the modern era of Late Model racing where achieving consistency from year to year is so difficult. "It's definitely getting harder and harder. The competition level is definitely better," Simpson said. "It's always been really tough, but the race cars are so equal nowadays when everybody is in contention." The Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds, Ozark Golf Car USRA B-Mods and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars also be in action both nights. - MLRA SET FOR LABOR DAY TRIPLE HEADER-- RON JENKINS MEMORIAL & WIENER NATIONALS
Wheatland, Missouri (August 28, 2023) - An exciting three nights of Lucas Oil MLRA racing action is on tap for this upcoming Labor day weekend, with over $26,000 to win on the line over the course of the weekend. This weekend's triple header will account for half of the remaining dates on the 2023 schedule and should be crucial when it comes to determining this years season long champion. Racing will hit the track at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO on Friday night September 1st, for the first of two nights of racing at the track labeled the Diamond of Dirt Tracks. The 9th Annual "Ron Jenkins Memorial" Presented by Rugged Radios, expands from a single day event to a two-night showdown to honor the original builder of Wheatland Raceway. The final weekend stop of the year at the Lucas Oil Speedway will feature two complete shows, with Friday night's opener paying $5,000 to win. The stakes will be even higher on night # 2 of the Jenkins Memorial with not only a higher purse, but added bonuses up for grabs thanks to Mary Jenkins Holt in Memory of Ron Jenkins. The Nights overall fastest qualifier in MyRacePass Qualifying will receive a $500 bonus for their efforts. The second bonus up for grabs will put an additional $1,000 into the pocket of the feature winner, making it an $11,000 pay day to the driver sitting in Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane at the end of the night. All 24 "A" Feature starters on Saturday night will be guaranteed $700. The weekend will conclude with another double-digit winner's payday on Sunday evening September 3rd, when the MLRA makes their lone visit of the year to the Moberly Motorsports Park located just outside of Moberly, Missouri for the 3rd Annual "Wiener Nationals". An afternoon and evening of racing and on-stage entertainment will await fans on Sunday, all leading up to the $10,000 to win 40 lap main event. For the second night in a row, Sunday's MyRacePass overall Fastest Qualifier will earn themselves a bonus, this time in the amount of $1,000. A season ago, Tony Jackson Jr., dominated the MLRA's Labor Day Weekend swing though Missouri. The two-time series champion claimed MRP Quick Time honors at both Lucas Oil Speedway and Moberly Motorsports Park, and then followed that up by parking his Capital Chassis in victory lane each of those nights as well. TURN FOUR NEWS & NOTES: MLRA LEADERBOARD: After 13 rounds of action thus far in 2023, Chad Simpson continues to stand atop the MLRA leaderboard by 165 points while carrying the Midwest Sheet Metal spoiler on his Longhorn Chassis. The defending MLRA Champion has a pair of wins to his name already this season and will have familiar company in his rearview mirror when he pulls into Wheatland, that being his brother Chris Simpson. Chris was able to close ground in the title chase and moved into second last month thanks to a strong 5th place run in the Diamond Nationals. Garrett Alberson is still searching for his first MLRA win of the year and sits just 30 back of Chris Simpson for the 2nd spot, while Sunoco Rookie of the Year leader Dillon McCowan comes into the weekend in fourth. Earlham Iowa's Daniel Hilsabeck completes the top five in the season long standings. MD3 HARD CHARGER AWARD: Jeff Herzog and Ricky Thornton Jr. sit tied atop the season long MD3 Hard Charger Standings, each with 2 Hard Charger of the Race Awards. Other notable MLRA drivers with one Hard Charger Award thus far include point leader Chad Simpson, Tyler Stevens, and Justin Duty, along with Oakwood IL's Bobby Pierce who is expected to make his final MLRA start of the season in Sunday's Wiener Nationals. - Williams edges Morton for USRA B-Mod title as close finishes highlight Lucas Oil Speedway championship program
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 26, 2023) - There was drama at the front and drama further back in the field in the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod main event Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Kris Jackson picked up the victory with a last-lap pass, but Bobby Williams celebrated the championship with what was probably the best 10th-place run of his career. It all went down on Rempfer Memorial Season Championship Night at Lucas Oil Speedway Presented by Bill Roberts Chevrolet and KCTV 5 Kansas City. In the other divisions of the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series, Mason Beck nailed down the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars title with another feature win; Ryan Middaugh celebrated the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified championship while Nic Bidinger captured the feature and Justin Wells capped his Hermitage Lumber Late Model championship with a 10th feature win. The championship-night program honors Harold "Rowdy" Rempfer and his wife, Julia, who were killed in an automobile accident five years ago. Rowdy was the mayor of Wheatland and he and Julia both worked at Lucas Oil Speedway for many years. "This season we've faced a lot of adversity at this track. It's been a love-hate relationship for us here," Williams said, adding that the championship was special for reasons other than himself. "I wanted this for my niece. She has heart surgery here in a few weeks, so we're glad to do that for her," Williams said. Turner set the pace in the B-Mod feature, leading the way as Gillmore, Morton and Jackson. The top four were separated by just 1.3 seconds when a caution slowed the action on lap seven. Just before the midpoint, it appeared that Williams' title chances were slim to none. On a lap-seven restart, Williams was caught up in a multi-car melee that sent him to the pits for quick repairs. Williams made it back on the track, but at the back of the field in 15th and far behind fourth-running Morton, whom he needed to stay within four positions to win his first title. But as the laps clicked by, Morton made a bobble and lost two spots and Williams made steady gains. By lap 17, Williams was 11th and Morton seventh. Meanwhile, there was action at the front on the final lap. Gillmore spun in turn three while looking to get around Turner to bring out a caution. The one-lap ensuing shootout saw Morton sixth and Williams 10th - and it gave seven-time track champ Jackson another chance. Jackson made the most of the it, using a slider in turns three and four to pass Turner and walk away with the win. It was sweet for Jackson as well that Williams won the title as he drives a J2 Race Car built by Jackson. "We had our work cut out for us, drawing a six in the redraw with five of the top competitors in front of me," Jackson said. "I knew Bobby had his work cut out for him. I know JC, when you put him on the line, he usually doesn't made any mistakes and he didn't make any, that I could see any way." Franklin wound up third with JC Newell fourth and Jon Sheets fifth. "I honestly thought when he turned in on the door in three," Jackson said, "that he kind of was stopping the slide and I thought, 'well, he has to slow down somewhat to make the turn and I don't. I've got the whole track to slide to the wall' so I left the wood down and kicked it sideways. "I don't think he was happy with me, but I didn't touch him and he touched me. That's the way it is." Beck celebrates feature win, USRA Stock Cars title: All Mason Beck needed to do was take the green flag on Saturday night as his points lead was such that he all but had the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars title clinched. The Urbana driver did much more than that, leading all 20 laps for his sixth feature victory of the season. William Garner entered the night 89 points behind Beck and, along with finishing second in the points chase he took second in the feature. "It feels pretty good," Beck said of the championship. "We worked our butts off this year and it paid off." Beck started on the outside of row one and he wasted no time grabbing the lead over third-starting William Garner. It took just five laps for those two to open a three-second lead over the rest of the field, with Rodney Schweizer far back in third. Beck's margin over Garner was 1.3 seconds by the halfway mark on lap 10 and 1.6 seconds when the first caution came out on lap 15. The final five laps saw Beck continue his dominance, finishing 1.3 seconds in front of Garner. Johnny Fennewald finished third with Waylon Dimmitt fourth and Schweizer in fifth. Bidinger outduels Davis for USRA Modified win: Nic Bidinger stalked race-long leader Kerry Davis for all the but the final 100 yards, as Bidinger made the winning pass off turn four to earn the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified feature win. Bidinger, of Perry, Kan., earned his third Lucas Oil Speedway victory of the season by the margin of .327 seconds. "I kind of gave him a warning nudge a couple of times and he still wasn't leaving me room," said Bidinger, who was committed to the high groove. "I wasn't sure whether I was gonna get room on the last lap, but he left it. That was a heck of a race. I enjoy racing with Kerry. I race with him a ton at Lakeside and respect him. Kerry's a hell of a shoe." Davis sprinted away to the lead from his front-row starting position and held it throughout, thought Bidinger pulled alongside on laps 13 and 14 and was unable to get around him. Bidinger made one more bid on the final lap, riding the high groove and pulled off the highlight-reel pass coming off turn four. Jason Pursley finished third and Middaugh wrapped up his championship season with a fourth-place finish. Middaugh had five feature wins on the season. "Every year we set our goals and our number one goal this year was to win a championship down here," Middaugh said. "It's such an awesome facility and awesome competition. To get it done means a lot. Anything on top of this is just a cherry on top. "Points racing is stressful. We're just out here trying to win races and have fun." Wells makes it 10 in Late Models: Veteran Justin Wells of Aurora capped a dominating season in the Hermitage Lumber Late Models, celebrating his first Lucas Oil Speedway championship by winning his 10th feature of the season. "It's been a great year here and it's been a pleasure to run this track," Wells said. "It's run so professional and the track is always good. It's been a fun year. "They've got a lot of good cars here. They threw a lot at us and we survived. We had some close ones, but that's what racing is all about. We're here to put on a show and see some side-by-side racing. We've been really lucky this year with what we've done." Wells took over the lead from Larry Ferris on lap two and never trailed. JC Morton was a distant second. Morton moved into second by lap five, but Wells was catching lapped traffic soon after and had a 1.1-second lead by the halfway mark. Wells' lead briefly shrunk to a half-second when he was caught up in slower cars, but he quickly regained his momentum. Wells continued on to a 2.4-second victory over Morton in the caution-free event. Bryon Allison, the points runner-up, finished third with Andy Bryant fourth in his late model debut and Ferris finished fifth.
