- IOWA BOUND: MLRA SET FOR "HAWKEYE LAND 40" & "CORN STATE NATIONALS"
Wheatland, Missouri (September,10 2024) - The Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will venture into Eastern Iowa this weekend for another trio of races, marking the series only Hawkeye State appearance of the season. With nine nights of racing remaining, this upcoming weekend of short track racing presents another critical stretch in the championship battle. For the first time in series history race teams will converge on the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA on Thursday night September 12th. Thursday nights MLRA event is a make-up following an early April wash out. K-Promotions will present the inaugural $5,000 to win "Hawkeye Land 40" on the ¼ mile semi banked dirt oval which rest on the grounds of the Cedar County Fairgrounds, just about 30 minutes northeast of Iowa City, IA. The Eastern Iowa facility has hosted a limited number of regional Late Model events in recent years, with the majority of those being under the former IMCA Derry Brothers sanction. Wheatland, Iowa's Justin Kay has been the dominating force in recent stops, accumulating five wins to lead all drivers. Current MLRA point leader Chad Simpson was a 2010 winner under the former Corn Belt Clash Series banner, and brother Chris is a two-time Cedar County winner with victories coming in 2011 & 2012. While the bullring is known for serving as an equalizer and showcasing driving talent, it also has the potential for once again opening the door to another first time MLRA winner. Bull ring action will continue Friday night September 13th, when the MLRA invades the Davenport Speedway located on the grounds of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. The first annual running of the "Corn State Nationals" presented by SR Promotions, will feature two complete nights of racing in Davenport, IA with Friday nights opener paying $5,000 to win. The weekend will conclude on Saturday night when the winners take will increase to $10,000 to win and $700 to start. Chad Simpson grabbed the win one year ago in the MLRA's most recent Davenport stop. Prior to Simpson's 2023 triumph, the ¼ mile produced back-to-back first time MLRA winners in hometown driver Spencer Diercks in 2022 and Ricky Thornton Jr. in 2021. The top three drivers in MLRA Championship standings each scored their first MLRA victories of the season over the recent Labor Day weekend. Chris Simpson and Tony Jackson Jr. both captured wins at the Lucas Oil Speedway, while four time series champion Chad Simpson collected a $10,000 payday in the 4th Annual Wiener Nationals at the Moberly Motorsports Park to conclude the weekend. While Chad Simpson was able to open up some breathing room in the last weekend of action, the battle for second is as wide open as it gets, with only 50 points separating drivers in positions 2 - 5. - SCHEDULE UPDATES: MLRA NOW SET FOR TRIO OF TRIPLE HEADER WEEKENDS
Wheatland, Missouri (September 4, 2024) - With a multitude of rainouts in 2024, Lucas Oil MLRA officials today announced a pair of schedule additions that will take place over the final two weekends of the racing season. With nine points events still on the schedule, it leaves ½ of the championship points battle yet to come over the next 7 weekends. "MLRA Fall Nationals": Lucas Oil Speedway The first change comes in the form of an additional race night for drivers and fans on Thursday, October 3rd at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. This night was originally set as an "Open Practice" session to kick off the Annual "MLRA Fall Nationals", but series and Track officials have agreed to transform this date into a full racing program featuring a $5,000 to win 30-lap main event that will be a full championship points night. The Thursday night event will go along with a full $5,000 to win show at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" on Friday night October 4th, before culminating the weekend on Saturday night the 5th with a $10,000 to win MLRA weekend finale. The MLRA Fall Nationals will be paired up for the first time with the 8th Annual "Big Buck 50" Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt, featuring three nights of qualifying and racing for Super Stocks that will conclude on Saturday night with a $10,000 to win weekend showdown of their own. Visit www.LucasOilSpeedway.com for more details and for info on weekend camping availability. "K.C. Cup": I-70 Speedway The final weekend of the season will transform into the "Road to Tri-City Championship Weekend", by way of the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. The I-70 event was washed out back on Saturday, August 24th, and will now shift to another weekend lead off event on Thursday, October 10th. The Inaugural running of the "K.C. Cup" Presented by Mid-American Automation Services will showcase the MLRA's best as they compete for a $7,000 to win top prize on the high banks in Odessa. This event will be just the second time that the MLRA has competed at I-70 Speedway in the tracks storied past. Joining the MLRA will be the POWRi/USRA Stock Cars competing for $1,000 to win. I-70's Thursday night showdown, will lead teams into the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL on Friday and Saturday October 11th - 12th for the annual "MLRA Championship Weekend" Presented by St. Louis Screw & Bolt paying $5,000 & $7,000 to win on back-to-back nights to wrap up the season. Hawkeye State Showdown: Up Next for the Lucas Oil MLRA is a triple header weekend on September 12th - 14th in Eastern Iowa. As announced earlier this summer, the MLRA will make up an early season rain out at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA on Thursday night September 12th, with the first annual running of the "Hawkeye Land 40". Action will shift to the Davenport Speedway on Friday and Saturday for the Inaugural "Corn State Nationals" with complete shows both nights. Friday nights opener will pay $5,000 to win for the MLRA drivers while Saturdays finale will end the weekend with a $10,000 payday. - CHAD SIMPSON CAPTURES $10,000 PAYDAY WITH 4TH ANNUAL WIENER NATIONALS VICTORY
Wheatland, MO (September 1, 2024) - After a set back on the opening lap of the 4th Annual Wiener Nationals, Chad Simpson rallied and raced away from the field to score his first Lucas Oil MLRA victory of the season on Sunday at the Moberly Motorsports Park. After scoring the nights MyRacePass "Fast Time" Award and a convincing heat race win, Simpson rolled off for the nights 30 lapper on the outside front row alongside of veteran Billy Moyer. However, it was deemed that Simpson got a jump on Moyer before the duo entered the Nutrien Ag Solutions Start Zone, which resulted in Simpson being set back one row for the ensuing start. Moyer would take advantage of his front row starting position to take the lead on the opening circuit, despite a valiant effort by Simpson to still grab the races initial lead. Moyer controlled the race in the early going, but Simpson took advantage of lapped traffic and was able to slide by Moyer for the lead on lap number 11. That lead however only last one lap, as contact between Simpson and a lapped car allowed Moyer to overtake the MLRA's current point leader and get back to the front just prior to the nights first caution. Simpson would then take advantage on the restart and returned to the lead by sliding Moyer exiting turn four, a move good enough for the nights Swift Springs Move of the Race. With Simpson pacing the field and Moyer still in tow, this time it was Dillon McCowan making a charge toward the front from his 9th starting position. The nights second and final caution would slow the action with just 4 laps to go as heat race winner Aaron Marrant slowed on the track with a flat right rear tire. Simpson jump back to the front on the restart and would cruise uncontested to score the $10,000 victory by 1.617 seconds. McCowan took advantage of the restart to race by Moyer and collected his second runner-up finish in as many nights over Moyer, who himself scored his second podium of the weekend. Saturday night winner Tony Jackson Jr. had another sold run in fourth, while Chris Simpson rebounded to finish in fifth. Billy Moyer 3rd (Left), Chad Simpson 1st (Center), Dillon McCowan 3rd (Right) Photo Credit: Todd Boyd "I've been kind of hard on myself the last couple of days after starting up front, and feeling like we had a car to win the last two nights," explained Simpson. "We still had solid fourth place finishes the last couple nights but this is what we are out here for. We want to win these races, and you know the championship is great, but win races and that part will come." The penalty on the initial start served as motivation for Simpson during the 30 lapper. "I'm not going to lie, I was a little disappointed on that initial start. I jumped it a little bit but Billy jammed the brakes too and probably made it look a lot worse than it was, but it is what it is. I got a little mad at myself and it was time to go then," he concluded. As for McCowan it was another solid podium run to wrap up his Labor Day Swing. "We pulled this car out after the first night this weekend at Lucas and the set up we have on it just really fits my driving style, and its been a lot of fun the last two nights. We let one slip through our fingers last night and kind of buried ourselves in qualifying tonight and in the heat race as fast as the track was. I feel like we had a pretty good recovery, and my guys didn't quit working, we just put our heads down and went to work to try and figure out what we could do to pass cars in the feature," he concluded. Moyer had his second podium finish in a row and noted, "We just had a third place car tonight, I'm not sure that 8 (McCowan) didn't have the best car there at the end. We just didn't tighten up near enough, and you live and learn. We are up on the podium here again at least, so we just have to keep getting a little better." Next up for the Lucas Oil MLRA will be a three-night stand on the eastern side of the Hawkeye state. Action will get underway with a make up event on Thursday night September 12th, at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, IA. - Jackson's late pass boosts him to victory in Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial finale at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 31, 2024) - Tony Jackson Jr. saved his best for last Saturday night in the 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway. The veteran Late Model driver from Lebanon found speed on the high side and rocketed to the lead two laps to go, then held off Dillon McCowan and Gordy Gundaker for the $12,000 victory. The prize included a $2,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt, in memory of Ron Jenkins, original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Jackson never led - but also was never out of the top three - until the exciting finish when the 2021 Lucas Oil MLRA champ went from third to first seemingly in an instant. It was his third time to win a Ron Jenkins Memorial feature. "What a race track," an excited Jackson said in victory lane. "Ten thousand is a great pay day and they add an extra two thousand. Great people and a great family. We can't thank them enough. We're blessed to win it." The race appeared to be McCowan's most of the way. The 20-year-old from nearby Urbana led 35 of the 40 laps, but was unable to finish it off after a lap 32-caution wiped out his tenuous lead and allowed Jackson and Gundaker to close in. "I'm kind of at a loss for words," McCowan said. "It was a great race. It's not how we wanted to end it. Congrats to them." Reigning MLRA champion and season points leader Chad Simpson led the first two laps before McCowan used a slider into turns three and four to grab the lead on lap three. Those two quickly opened a 10-car-length margin over third-running Jackson. As the lead duo battled, Jackson closed in by lap 11 to make it a three-way battle as the front runners closed in on lapped traffic. By the midway points on lap 20, McCowan had extended his lead to about six car lengths over Simpson with Jackson right behind. The first caution flew at that point as Dustin Walker slowed on the front straightaway. Before a lap could be completed after the restart, Cole Wells spun in turn three to bring out another caution. The next restart saw Jackson clear Simpson for second and set his sights on the leader. McCowan fought off sliders on two consecutive laps from Jackson to stay in front and again on lap 26. McCowan was able to build his lead back to five car lengths by lap 30 with Gundaker getting around Simpson for third. The action ground to a halt on lap 32 when Scott Crigler stopped in turn one to bring out a yellow. "I sure appreciate Scott Crigler stopping up there and pulling straight off to draw the caution," McCowan said. "But, that's the way it happens." With an eight-lap sprint to the finish, McCowan had a clean restart as Gundaker drove past Jackson on the low side where he soon was putting pressure on the leader. But just when it appeared McCowan and Gundaker would battle for the win, Jackson steered to the high groove and whipped around both of them coming off turn two on lap 38. "I was too tight to roll around the bottom," Jackson said. "I seen Dillon's stick guy telling him to get down and block Gordy and that's all I needed." Jackson took it to the checkers from there for his 16th career MLRA win, denying McCowan his first MLRA victory by 1.043 seconds. Gundaker was third with Simpson fourth Jon Kirby fifth. Jackson installed a new motor into this Longhorn chassis on Friday before Night One of the two-day program and, despite a poor qualifying time, rallied from deep in the field to finish third in the main event. "We were absolutely terrible when we unloaded yesterday," Jackson said. "We qualified dead last. I wore Vinny's phone out today, he is the man. I want to thank my wife and my little girl, Rob, Casey, Jayko, the Willards." McCowan bounced back from an even-more forgettable Friday. He was involved in a first-lap incident, not of his own making, and finished 28th with his car too damaged to complete a lap. "I'm excited to be standing on the front stretch after the runs we've had and getting taken out last night. I'm excited to get back and hopefully next time we can get some redemption," McCowan said, looking ahead to three more visits to Lucas Oil Speedway by the MLRA this season. "Hopefully we can do some good when we come back." The seventh-starting Gundaker said he felt he was in an ideal position, but things didn't work out. "That last restart I think that I was probably the better car of the three of us," Gundaker said. "I could run around the bottom better than those guys could. His stick guy probably moved him down. Hopefully we can get rid of stick guys and put it in the drivers' hands, but it's all good. "Me and Tony had a hell of a race there, racing for second. It feels good to get on the podium after we struggled last night." Chad Simpson came home in fourth and stretched his series lead to an unofficial 110 points over Jackson, Gundaker and brother Chris Simpson who all are tied. Chris Simpson, the Friday-night feature winner, lost power during the parade laps and was unable to start. He was set to begin fourth and entered the night just 15 points behind his brother in the points chase. McCowan had fast overall qualifying lap, at 16.242 seconds, to earn a $500 bonus courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt, again in Ron Jenkins' memory. The Lucas Oil MLRA wraps a three-race weekend swing on Sunday night at Moberly Raceway Park with a $10,000-to-win feature. Stovall leads all the way for USRA Modifieds win: Veteran Jesse Stovall of Billings led wire-to-wire to beat Lucas Gibbs for the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified win. Stovall started on the outside of row one and opened a one-second lead over Lucas Gibbs after five laps. Those two opened a large gap back to third-place Nathan Hagar by the halfway mark on lap 10. Gibbs closed in on Stovall as the duo navigated lapped traffic, but the former Late Model driver was able to maintain the lead as action remained green at just under a second until lap 15 when Greg Scheffler took a spin in turn four. Stovall rode the high groove after the restart and went on to prevail over Gibbs by 1.1 seconds. Henry Chambers was third, Paden Phillips fourth and Jeff Cutshaw fifth. "This is just a surreal and awesome feeling to be standing here again after several years," said Stovall, who scored his last win at Lucas Oil Speedway since 2019. He's driven a limited schedule of late as he's making a driving comeback after a concussion in his Late Model in 2017 limited his schedule. "I give all the Glory to God," Stovall added. "I've struggled for a long time trying to get myself right, where I could come out and do this again. The sport I love, it's just an awesome sport." Williams repeats in USRA B-Mods: Bobby Williams of Hermitage made it back-to-back wins in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, holding off Mitchell Franklin for the victory. Williams led all 20 laps for his second win of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway and 11th overall in 2024. He started fourth and got around front-row starter Franklin in the early going. "This is a lot better than some of the weekends I've had here, for sure," Williams said with a laugh, when asked about his sweep. "Me and Mitchell had a pretty good battle going on there for a little bit. He gave me just enough room to throw a slider on him and it worked out in my favor. I like racing with Mitchell, me and him always race real hard." Logan Smith came home in third with Kerry Davis fourth and Kenny Nutter fifth. Wiles captures SMVR triumph: Andy Wiles of Erie, Kan., rolled to victory in the Show-Me Vintage Racing Series feature, coming from deep in the pack. The 11th-starting Wiles quickly advanced and had the lead by lap three, taking it from pole-starting Gary Proskocil. Wiles had a four-second command by lap eight and was making his way through lapped traffic. The race continued caution-free until lap 13, just two from the finish, and Wiles had a whopping 8.2-second lead over Bob Werkmeister when the yellow came out for a one-car spin. Wiles had a good restart and went on to finish off his second victory at Lucas Oil Speedway, beating Jim Thorne by 1.1 seconds. Werkmeister finished third with Brandon Jordan fourth and Bill Berens fifth. "I'm having a great time and I'm having one of my best years," Wiles said. "This is three out of five I've won (at Lucas Oil Speedway). Last night I hit a tire and it made it hard for me to steer. All I've got to say is I love this place. Tonight, we're partying." - BACK-ON-TOP: TONY JACKSON JR. SCORES THRILLING JENKINS MEMORIAL VICTORY
Wheatland, MO (August 31, 2024) - For the third time in his career, Tony Jackson Jr. raced to the win in the finale of the 10th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway, cashing in on a special $12,000 pay day and his 16th career MLRA win in the process. A strong field of 29 Lucas Oil MLRA late models checked in for the annual battle honoring Jenkins, the builder of the original Wheatland Raceway. After an incident relegated him to a last place finish the night before, Dillon McCowan got off to a fast start by grabbing the nights MyRacePass Fast Time Award, and followed it up with a victory in his heat race. The heat win would position him on the outside front row of the 40 lapper with point leader Chad Simpson on the pole. Drama would hit the track before the nights initial green flag, when during pace laps Friday night winner and third starting Chris Simpson exited the speedway with what appeared to be a puff of smoke coming from under the hood of the 32 machine. Simpson would be pushed to the hot pit area and was unable to take the green, relegating him to a 24th place finish just one night after moving to within 15 of the series point lead. Chad Simpson moved to the race lead on the opening lap, but it was short lived as McCowan charged to the top spot entering the third turn on lap three. McCowan used lapped traffic and a long green flag run to build up a cushion, until the nights first yellow waved at the half-way point. After another quickie caution on lap 20, McCowan took the field back to the green with Simpson and Jackson in tow. In the closing laps it appeared McCown was headed for the biggest win of his young career, until the caution waved for the final time on lap 32 as Scott Crigler came to a stop at the top of turn one with a flat left rear tire. The final eight circuits would become a three car battle, this time with Gordy Gundaker occupying the second spot ahead of Jackson. Gundaker was able to navigate the bottom side and applied pressure to McCowan. This battle for the lead quickly opened up the top line for Jackson, as he charged to the outside of the unsuspecting lead duo and race by them for the race lead with just a pair of laps remaining. Jackson would go on to take the win by 1.043 seconds over McCowan, while Gundaker recorded his second podium finish of the season. Chad Simpson would come home in fourth while Jon Kirby capped off the top five. Simpson was able to increase his point lead to 110 points, with a three car tie for the second position behind him between Chris Simpson, McCowan, and Jackson Jr. Dillon McCowan 2nd (Left), Tony Jackson Jr. 1st (Center), Gordy Gundaker 3rd (Right) Todd Boyd Photo A rejuvenated and excited Jackson celebrated his 16th career MLRA win by thanking his team for getting him back into victory lane. "We were absolutely terrible when we unloaded yesterday, we qualified dead last. I wore Vinny's phone out today, he is the man. I want to thank my wife and my little girl, Rob, Casey, Jayko, the Willard's—what a race track," he exclaimed. It looked like late in the going Jackson would have to settle for third, but the veteran was observant and new what he had to do go give himself a shot at the win. "I was too tight to roll around the bottom. I could get my momentum going and thought I was actually good and then that yellow come out and I wasn't sure if I could get going or if there was enough laps. I seen Dillon's stick guy telling him to get down to block Gordy and that was all I needed." "They are great," he commented of Mary Jenkins Holt who contributed the extra money in honor of Ron Jenkins. "$10,000 is a great pay day, right. And they add an extra $2,000 so we can't thank them enough. They are great people and a great family obviously, and we are just blessed to win it." The night ended in heartbreak for McCowan, who was trying to erase a miserable outing and torn up race car from Friday night. "I'm kind of at a loss for words," explained McCowan. "It was a great race, and it's not how we wanted to end it. I sure appreciate Scott Crigler stopping up there and then pulling straight off to draw the caution. Thats just the way it happens." "I'm excited to be standing on the front stretch after the runs we've had and after getting taken out last night. I can't thank my guys enough for working as hard as they do and everything, just hopefully next time we are one spot further ahead," he concluded. For Gundaker it was another solid podium run, as he tries to chase down his first career series win. "I think there on that last restart I was probably the better car of the three of us. I could run around the bottom better than those guys could, and I imagine his stick guy probably moved him (McCowan) down, so hopefully we get rid of stick guys so we can put it in the driver's hands. It's all good." "You know me and Tony had a hell of a race there for a while running for second. It feels good to get on the podium after we struggled last night, so I'm excited to get this St. Louis Screw and Bolt Longhorn Chassis up front." Lucas Oil MLRA action for the Labor Day weekend will wrap up on Sunday night September 1st at the Moberly Motorsports Park with the running of the 4th annual "Wiener Nationals". An afternoon full of activities and stage entertainment will culminate with the nights $10,000 to win A-Feature. - Chris Simpson captures opening-night win at 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 30, 2024) - Veteran Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, picked up his first career victory at Lucas Oil Speedway, winning Friday's opening-night 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios. Simpson took the lead on lap 11 of the 30-lapper and held off Billy Moyer to collect $7,000 and his 17th career MLRA victory. Simpson's winning total that included a $2,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins, builder of the original Wheatland Raceway. "We haven't had a stellar year. We've had a pretty decent year, but nothing to be bragging about,' said Simpson, who began the night 45 behind his brother, Chad, in the MLRA championship chase. "This points race is pretty tight. Me and my brother are probably gonna put on a hell of a show to end it." Moyer, driving a new Longhorn chassis from Double L Motorsports, said he's still getting used to the car but was pleased with his result. "We're guessing at a lot of things we do," Moyer said. "Now that we've got a night under our belts we can work on it a little bit and make it a little better. "It was a good track," Moyer added. "They did a good job, with the weather. It was fun for everybody and Chris had the best car tonight. He got it done." Simpson started ninth and survived an onslaught on cautions to move into contention from his ninth-starting position. Pole-starting Jeff Herzog led from the start, opening up a 1.5-second lead over Ryan Johnson by lap six. Chris Simpson got around Johnson for the runner-up spot a lap later and gave chase, with the event's third caution flying on lap eight. Johnson was running in the top four when he was part of a four-car tangle on lap nine to bring out a fourth caution. As the race struggled to get into any rhythm due to the excess of cautions, Herzog led Chris Simpson, BMoyer and Chad Simpson to the restart. Simpson grabbed the lead away from Herzog on lap 11 with an inside pass out of turn four. He was able to extend his lead to 1.6 seconds by lap 15 over Moyer, who moved into second that time around. But before another lap could be compelted, Mason Oberkramer and Gordy Gundaker got together in turn four for caution No. 5. Johnson spun and collected Brennon Willard on lap 18 to make it a half-dozen cautions. Chris Simpson led Moyer by just under a half-second with Chad Simpson in third with 12 laps remaining. The race ran caution-free the rest of the way and Simpson dominated, rolling to a 2.7-second lead by lap 24 as Tony Jackson Jr. rolled into third behind Moyer. Simpson lost some ground over the final laps, but held on for a comfortable 1.3-second win over Moyer. "I didn't know how the track was. They got a lot of rain," Simpson said, noting a mid-afternoon thunderstorm that soaked the speedway. "The bottom was so greasy during our heat races, we couldn't even touch it. We had to run the middle there. "It was a good track. I had to move up there at the end. Chad, my crew guy, told me Moyer was coming on the top so I moved up and kind of sailed from there." Jackson finished third with MLRA points leader Chad Simpson fourth and Herzog fifth. Kayden Clatt set fast overall qualifying lap, at 15.914 seconds, to earn a $500 bonus courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt, again in Ron Jenkins' memory. Clatt and Dillon McCowan tangled in turn four on the opening lap and McCowan, fourth in season points, was unable to continue while Klatt wound up 14th. Spalding rolls to USRA Modifieds win: Chris Spalding of Montgomery City, Mo., led the final 17 laps for the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified victory, beating runner-up Jeff Cutshaw. Spalding took the lead away from fellow front-row starter Chase Sigg on lap four as the pair came out of turn four. Spalding opened a 1.5-second lead by the midway point on lap 10 Cutshaw in third. Sigg's car lost power on lap 12 and he slowly rolled to the track exit, but not before a caution came out. Spalding had a four-second lead over Cutshaw at the time, with Dean Wille in third. Spalding held on from there to beat Cutshaw by 1.8 seconds for his first Lucas Oil Speedway victory. "I didn't think I was gonna win, so I don't know what to say," Spalding joked in victory lane. "I've struggled here bad. The track was fantastic and we did get lucky with the starts, with our starting position, but we'll take it however we can get 'em." Paden Phillips finished third with Wille fourth and Henry Chambers fifth. USRA B-Mods win goes to Williams: Bobby Williams of Hermitage led all the way to take a decisive feature in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, his first Lucas Oil Speedway victory of the season. There were three cautions before one lap was officially completed. Williams beat Keeper in a battle of front-row starters for the early lead - but they only were at full speed for two laps before another yellow. Williams had a 1.7-second lead over Keeper when the race's sixth caution slowed things again on lap eight. Keeper was passed on the restart by Tyler Potter and Robbe Ewing as Williams drove away to a three-second lead in just four laps. Williams poured it on as the race remained green the rest of the way. He beat Potter at the checkers by 6.1 seconds. Ewing held on for third with Jordan Jones fourth and Chase Jones finishing fifth. Jordan earns SMVR victory: Brandon Jordan of Pineville, Mo., led all 15 laps, holding off Jim Thorne at the finish, to win the Show-Me Vintage Racers feature. Jordan started eighth, but wasted no time getting to the lead and staying there, despite some challenges. Jordan earned his second SMVR win of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway. Andy Wiles, who started 27th, charged into second on lap 10 when the sixth caution of the event came out. That yellow wiped out Jordan's lead that was nearly two seconds. Wiles spun on lap 12 as he was trying to make an inside pass for the lead in turn two. That was all Jordan needed to take it the final three laps to pick up the victory. "He was coming hard, maybe a little too hard that one lap," Jordan said of Wiles. "We was able to have to hustle there." Chad Eickleberry finished third with John Martin third and Brian Cox fifth. - CHRIS SIMPSON CHARGES TO OPENING NIGHT WIN IN 10TH ANNUAL RON JENKINS MEMORIAL
Wheatland, MO (August 30, 2024) - After giving up ground on a tight MLRA championship battle one week ago, Chris Simpson made a statement on Friday night that he was not going away quietly, by scoring the opening night win in the 10th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway. Making it even sweeter for the Oxford, IA driver is the fact that it was his first career MLRA feature win at the Diamond of Dirt tracks after numerous prior podium finishes. Late afternoon rain shows made for a busy couple of hours for track crews to get the track into racing condition. In MyRacePass qualifying it was youngster Kayden Clatt grabbing his first career Fast Time with a lap of 15.914 seconds, which also netted him a $500 bonus in memory of Ron Jenkins. Jeff Herzog and Billy Moyer Sr. led the field to the green for the 30-lapper, with Herzog seizing control on lap one, and only before a pair of cautions slowed the pace in the early laps. In the early going Herzog opened up a 1.713 second advantage over the field as he approached the tail end of the 28-car starting field. While Herzog was setting the pace, it was 9th starting Chris Simpson making the noise, and putting himself into the runner up spot by lap 7. Back-to-back cautions on laps 8 and 9 bunched up the field, and this time it would be Simpson powering to the race lead on lap ten with a strong run exiting the bottom side of turn two. Simpson was able to slowly stretch out the advantage with the 45-time MLRA winner Moyer starting to close ground around the high line of the speedway. The final two cautions of the night would wave on laps 15 & 18, but Simpson was able to drive away from the field in the closing laps to score his 17th career MLRA victory and first since April of last year at the Lake Ozark Speedway. Simpson collect a $5,000 pay day plus a $2,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in Memory of Ron Jenkins, the builder of the original Wheatland Raceway. Billy Moyer 2nd (Left), Chris Simpson 1st (Center), Tony Jackson Jr. 3rd (Right) Todd Boyd Photo "I didn't know how the track was going to be," commented Simpson. "They got a lot of rain today right before the races started, and that bottom was so greasy in our heat races so we couldn't even touch it you know, so we had to just run the middle there. It was a good track, and I had to move up there at the end. My crew guy Chad (Simondsen) told me Moyer was coming on the top, so I moved up and just kind of sailed from there." Simpson who finished 4th in the Cowboy Classic early in the season continued in saying, "When I was here for the show me—this is the same car and same set up. One and two held on a lot longer, and three and four started shining up on entry a little and you really had to hit it right just to make it work. I kind of figured if that top would get burnt in that somebody would be coming, but once I got by Herzog there I kind of had open track to move around. The win allowed Chris Simpson to close the gap on the championship battle, with Chad Simpson clinging to a 15-point advantage with just 11 races remaining. "This points chase is pretty tight, so me and my brother are probably going to put on a hell of a show to end it," noted the feature winner. Moyer was happy with his second place run and noted of his new ride, "Tonight was the first time I've been in this thing, so we were guessing on a lot of things, but Cory and them guys give us a lot of help on some stuff. Now we have a night under our belt so we can work on it a little bit and hopefully make it a little bit better." The podium run for Jackson was his best MLRA finish of the season and second consecutive top five in his new Longhorn Chassis. After starting 8th on the grid he said, "We kind so struggled there early, I didn't know if it was the track or me because the car is new. But I had a really good car there in the feature and we were able to make it up through there." Night number two of the 10th Annual Ron Jenkins Memorial continues on Saturday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway. The MLRA will take the track in a 50-lap main event that has been bumped to $12,000 to win thanks to a $2,000 added bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt in memory of Ron Jenkins. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: McCowan returns 'home' a battle-tested driver for MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 28, 2024) - Since he last appeared on his home dirt, over Memorial Day Weekend for the Show-Me 100, you might say Dillon McCowan has gone to racing school. The 20-year-old from nearby Urbana followed the UMP Summer Nationals "Hell Tour" that began in mid-June, a six-week endurance test that took him to more than two dozen tracks in eight states. It was quite the education. Add in a few non-Summer Nationals shows, and McCowan has raced at 28 different speedways in the three months since his 16th-place finish in the 32nd annual Show-Me 100 Presented by Missouri Division of Tourism on May 25th. "It's been kind of a blur and kind of wild," McCowan said earlier this week. "Ever since (the Show-Me 100) we've been wide open and put the pedal down and haven't looked back. The Summer Nationals was definitely a big deal. It taught us a lot and we got to see a lot of different race tracks and a lot of different dirt, racing around a lot of different guys. All around, it was a great experience for us." McCowan passed the test with, if not straight-As, certainly with honor grades. He didn't win a feature, but was a mark of consistency with 19 top-10 finishes in 23 features in which he qualified for, and a second-place finish in tour points behind Tyler Erb. This weekend, McCowan hopes to put some of his knowledge to work at the 10th annual Lucas Oil MLRA Ron Jenkins Memorial Presented by Rugged Radios at Lucas Oil Speedway, Friday and Saturday nights. "It's awesome to be back," McCowan said. "I always look forward to coming home and racing with all the people I grew up racing around and getting to be at the track will all my buddies again, and all the familiar faces that I used to around every weekend." Joining the MLRA Late Models both nights will be the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds, Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and Show-Me Vintage Racers. The Modifieds will run for $750 to win on Friday and $1,500 to win on Saturday; the B-Mods go for $500 to win Friday and $1,000 on Saturday. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. both days with grandstands at 4:30, hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05. Fat prize money will be up for grabs for the MLRA Late Models with a $5,000-to-win feature on Friday night and a big $10,000 prize on Saturday. The feature winners each night also will receive a $2,000 bonus from Mary Jenkins Holt, in memory of Ron Jenkins, builder of the original Wheatland Raceway. Mary Jenkins Holt also will award Fast Time Qualifier $500 each night. That McCowan failed to win a feature on the Summer Nationals marathon may pale in comparison to the bigger picture, with the fact that he didn't tear up either of his cars iand his motors also survived intact. "That was probably the craziest part of it all," McCowan said. "You see everybody tore up every night and guys wrecking out. We were fortunate enough to bring both of our cars back in pretty well one piece and just maintenance everything up and put on new bodies. We were really fortunate not to tear a lot of stuff up." Meanwhile, McCowan built a racing notebook of first-time tracks from tiny to large and everything between. "We went from one extreme to the other," McCowan said. "Macon (Speedway) is probably the smallest thing I've seen in my life, other than the Dome (America's Dome in St. Louis). We raced 100 laps around that place and then Red Hill (Raceway) is big and aero dependent and your stuff has to be just right. "It was fun to experience the different types of tracks, all the different kind of dirt and how you have to change everything you're doing inside the cockpit so frequently and so quick." All the while, it was just Dillon and friend Riley Duncan traveling and servicing the cars for the majority of the tour. Dillon's dad, Charlie, was along for part of it before returning home to manage the family farm. Dillon's uncle Kim drove the hauler and loaned a hand for some of the trip. But the bulk of the experience and life on the road for an extended period fell upon Dillon and Riley. "That deal, it was so good for us," McCowan said. "That all taught me so much as a driver getting to experience different things and being in the car night after night. It was tough, but once you get out there and do it, you're thankful. It was good for the whole team." Now he's back in familiar surroundings, with family and friends primed to cheer him on. McCowan is fourth in MLRA season points, 105 behind championship leader Chad Simpson. He's not given up hopes to making a run at the reigning champ. "There's like 12 races left. If we can keep our nose clean and have some good runs, just be as consistent as we can, I think we might be right there in the chase," McCowan said. "But a bad night can be detrimental because we don't have a full season to recover if we have a bad weekend or a bad race." He said the same philosophy applies that he learned from the Summer Nationals. "Mentally, you just have to take it day by day," McCowan said. The MLRA will continue on to Moberly Motorsports Park on Sunday for another $10,000-to-win program. - RON JENKINS MEMORIAL & WIENER NATIONALS HIGHLIGHT MLRA'S LABOR DAY WEENEND
Wheatland, Missouri (August 26, 2024) - With the Labor Day weekend upon us, it brings about an extended weekend for many, and a trifecta of racing action for the Lucas Oil MLRA. Three big nights of racing will be on the docket beginning this Friday night, and thanks to $5,000 in added BONUS MONEY the weekend will now feature two payouts of $10,000 or more. The Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri will get the weekend started on Friday August 30th, with the opening night of the 10th Annual "Ron Jenkins Memorial" presented by Rugged Radios. The two-day affair has become a staple on the MLRA schedule, as it pays tribute to Jenkins who was the original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Tyler Stevens of Paragould, AR scored the weekend openers $5,000 top prize one season ago, marking his his first career win under the MLRA series banner. Action will continue at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" on Saturday night August 31st, with night two of the Ron Jenkins Memorial. The pressure and the stakes will be doubled on Saturday, as $10,000 will be up for grabs to the first to take the checkered flag, with all 24 feature drivers guaranteed $700 just for starting. **$5,000 BONUS MONEY ADDED** In addition to each nights regular MLRA purse, added bonus money will be up for grabs courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt, in memory of Ron Jenkins. A $500 Bonus will be presented each night to the driver with the overall "Fast Time" during MyRacePass qualifying. A $2,000 Bonus will also be awarded to the feature winner both Friday and Saturday night making each night now worth $7,000 and $12,000 to win respectively. The Labor Day trifecta will once again conclude on Sunday night September 1st, with the MLRA's annual trek to the Moberly Motorsports Park in Moberly, MO. The 4th Annual "Wiener Nationals" will take center stage on the 4/10 mile high banked clay oval paying $10,000 to win and $750 to start. Former event winners include, Bobby Pierce, Tony Jackson Jr., and Mike Marlar. A racing event unlike any other, the Wiener Nationals offers fans a full day of fun from appearances by an Elvis Impersonator, Ruby Leigh performing the National Anthem, a hot dog eating contest, and the MLRA's 4 side salute led by the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Proceeds from the event will help raise funds for CARS FOR HEROES, which is a 501C3 charity that provides donated vehicles to disabled Veterans. A vehicle will be given away to a Veteran during the Weiner Nationals Race. By virtue of his 3rd place finish this past Friday at the Lakeside Speedway, four time MLRA champion Chad Simpson was able to open up a slight bit of breathing room in the points battle, as he now holds a 45 point advantage. Brother Chris Simpson has now moved back into the second spot, while Gordy Gundaker slips to third, but still only 65 behind Chad Simpson. Dillon McCowan has moved up into the 4th position ahead of Trevor Gundaker as they sit 105 and 130 points out of the top spot respectively with just 10 races remain in the 2024 season. MLRA TURN 4 NEWS AND NOTES: First Time Winners-- The Ron Jenkins Memorial has a history of producing first time winners. RC Whitwell, current crew chief for Garrett Alberson, grab his one and only MLRA win in the event in 2015. Both Randy Timms (17') and Mason Oberkramer (20') broke through in the Labor Day weekend classic for their first career MLRA wins, while just one year ago Tyler Stevens scored the win in the weekend opener. Wheatland—the key to the 2024 MLRA Championship??—Ten rainouts has made for an ultra-tight championship points battle with ten nights remaining. Four of the series final ten races will be contested at the Lucas Oil Speedway over the next five weeks, making performance at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks critical. Of the top 6 drivers who are separated by only 140 points, only Chad Simpson (4) and Tony Jackson Jr. (3) have MLRA wins here. Throw in Dillon McCowan who has two Lucas Oil Speedway track titles to his credit, and the Gundaker brothers who were the two highest finishing MLRA regulars at this year's Show-Me 100. When it comes to qualifying don't count out Chris Simpson—the only MLRA driver who recorded top 3 qualifying efforts in both nights of the Show-Me and recorded a 4th place finish in the Cowboy Classic. Track Position is King—In the first three years of the Wiener Nationals, the driver who has set the overall MyRacePass "Fast Time" has gone on to win the $10k event. Wiener Nationals, it's anyone's race to win—Chad Simpson is the only driver to have recorded multiple top 5's in the Wiener Nationals with finishes of 4th and 3rd in the past two seasons. The 4/10 mile facility has provided some great racing with 13 different drivers finding themselves with a top five finish since the inaugural even in 2021. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Young USRA B-Mod driver Hoyt Miller impresses under veteran's tutelage
WHEATLAND, MO. (Aug. 21, 2024) - Hoyt Miller is not your typical rookie in the deep and talented pool of drivers in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod division at Lucas Oil Speedway. Miller is displaying talent well beyond his years on his way to a likely top-five finish in season points. The 14-year-old from Cross Timbers enters Saturday's Rempfer Family Season Championship Presented by Bill Roberts Chevrolet as one of the breakout drivers of 2024. He's won a pair of B-Mod features at Monett Speedway with a season-high fifth-place at Lucas Oil Speedway on July 27th. "I think it's gone pretty good," Miller said of his first full-time season in a B-Mod at Lucas Oil Speedway. "We've had a couple of bad finishes, which were my fault a little bit, but so far it's gone really well. A lot better than I thought it was going to be." It's been almost a year since Miller caught the eye of one of the Ozarks' top veteran drivers and car builders. Tony Jackson Jr. out of Lebanon, a two-time Lucas Oil MLRA Late Model Series champion, put Miller in the familiar Jackson No. 56 after watching him at last fall's USRA Nationals. Miller was driving his family owned B-Mod after moving up from the Midwest Mod division and wasn't having the greatest results at the USRA Nationals. Jackson said he knew the Miller family a little bit and offered to lend a hand in the pits, but was impressed that when he checked out the Miller work area that young Hoyt was fully engaged in working on the car. "During the USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway, my wife Krissy and I were walking through the pits, and we noticed that every time we walked past Hoyt Miller's pit area that he was elbows deep working on his race car," Jackson said. "For a 13-year-old he not only has driving ability, but he also has a strong work ethic, and I'm all about that. "I was talking to my wife and we were wanting to start something," Jackson said of putting a young driver into a J2 B-Mod chassis. "I know when I was racing my dad helped me get into it. That was something we wanted to do. We've been fortunate to have good sponsors and a good racing career. "I'm hopefully nowhere near the end of my racing career, but at the same time my little girl is 11 and is getting older. I haven't raced as much this year and I just wanted to give back a little bit. He's who we picked to do it." Hoyt Miller said he was "surprised" by the offer, knowing that Jackson could have picked any number of other young drivers for the opportunity. "But they decided for it to be me. I felt really good about that and I thank them a lot for my success this season," Miller said, adding that Jackson's best advice was to make this a learning year. "Just stay calm and let everything play out," he said of Jackson's advice. "Don't put your nose somewhere it shouldn't be and don't tear up the car. Just drive smart and don't be stupid on the race track." Miller has six top-10 finishes in 10 attempts at Lucas Oil Speedway and is in position to finish no worse than fifth in points. The pair of wins at Monett were a pleasant bonus. Jackson said the first season couldn't have played out much better. "He's done very well. He's definitely coming along and he takes the good with the bad," Jackson said. "He stays focused and knows he's learning, but also knows that he's talented and has a fast car. It kind of goes together. "I told him that we just wanted to learn and be competitive this year and he's already won two races. He's definitely already surpassed our goals." Miller, who began racing go-karts at six years old, grew up around the sport and at Lucas Oil Speedway. His dad, Andrew Miller, often helped Evan and J.D. Hubert of Cross Timbers with their racing programs and young Hoyt paid close attention. He's attended several Show-Me 100s with a favorite memory being Scott Bloomquist winning a B-Main on three wheel in 2018 after breaking his left front wheel early in the race. Now that he's driving on the Wheatland oval, Miller said it's been a learning process. "I finally figured out myself how to run the top a lot better," Hoyt Miller said. "Different tracks, there's different lines you have to run. Lucas is more of a bottom-dominant race track and we can be a little looser there and still be faster." Hoyt said he takes mental notes while following some of the veteran B-Mod drivers during races. He used Jon Sheets as an example. "Jon Sheets, you can tell if he's lifting in the corner or what-not," Miller said. "I can watch that so I can base my driving style off his that night." Miller said he keeps the car most weeks to do the normal, weekly maintenance. They'll take it to J2 headquarters if there's more-significant work to be done, but Jackson said it's important for Miller to prep the car otherwise. "If there is no issues and it's a weekly maintenance deal, we make him do it." Jackson said. "That way he learns." It's the same with race-night education. Jackson said he attends the races when he can to offer advice, but otherwise it's all up to Miller. "We went the first race of the year and took in a test session and a couple of more races with him," Jackson said. "He learns. We give him advice and he follows through immediately. He's a quick learner. He's doing really good and his future is bright." With the regular season at Lucas Oil Speedway finishing up Saturday, Miller still has a goal of winning a race at Wheatland. With school starting, it's going to be a busy fall as he plays linebacker for the football team. Friday nights will be iffy for racing once football games begin, but he plans to keep racing somewhere on Saturday and Sunday nights, with the USRA Nationals in mid-September also circled on his racing calendar. "Our goal is to see if I can get a win at USRA Nationals or this coming weekend at Lucas," he said. "Our car has been really good and I think we can finally get one there." JC Morton has clinched the B-Mod championship as he's 141 points in front of Logan Smith with Trevor Drake 153 behind. Milller is 30 points behind Drake and 13 in front of fifth-place Jaylen Wettengel. The Miller/Jackson team sponsors, in addition to TJR Motorsports and J2 Race Cars, include Close Racing Supply, Norris Logging, Dynamic Drivelines, All-Star Performance, Wildwood Brakes, Earnest Performance, Elite Auto Complex, Elite Trailers, Eagle Machine and A2Z Signs. Track champions will be crowned in all four divisions Saturday night in a program named to honor Harold "Rowdy" Rempfer and his wife, Julia, who were killed in an automobile accident six years ago. Rowdy was the mayor of Wheatland and he and Julia both worked at Lucas Oil Speedway. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstands at 4:30, hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05. Final Kids' Power Wheel race at intermission: The final Kids' Power Wheel races of the season will be held during intermission with the season champion also named for the youngsters. Morrow Sheets has the most wins this season and a podium finish (top three) will clinch the championship. Youngsters ages 5-12 can bring their own battery-powered cars to the RCR Designs Jr Fan Club sign-in or drop them at the pit gates and they will be brought to the front stretch at intermission. - BUSY STRETCH FOR LUCAS OIL MLRA BEGINS AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY & I-70 SPEEDWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (August 20, 2024) - The Lucas Oil MLRA will return to the dirt this weekend with a double header of action surrounding the Kansas City area. This will also mark the first series event since June 7th, where last season's Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year Dillon McCowan scored his first career MLRA victory at the Callaway Raceway. A total of 12 events remains on the 2024 MLRA schedule, with defending series Champion Chad Simpson once again leading the way in a wide open points battle. St Charles, MO driver Gordy Gundaker has shot up to the second spot and is only 10 points out of the championship lead, while two time Lakeside Speedway MLRA winner Chris Simpson trails by only 15 markers. Trevor Gundaker enters the weekend in the fourth position, while McCowan completes the top five, just 90 and 95 points out of the top position respectively. Finishing out the top ten are two time series champion Tony Jackson Jr. (-125), Earl Pearson Jr. (-140), Jeff Herzog (-215), Clayton Stuckey (-270), and Lakeside veteran Aaron Marrant (-290) who will be looking for his first series win at his home track come Friday night. The green flag will drop on Friday night August 23rd with a $5,000 to win visit to the friendly confines of the Lakeside Speedway, in Kansas City, KS. Lakeside is one of the more storied tracks in series history, having hosted a total of 34 MLRA events dating back to the 2000 race season. The MLRA's most recent stop at the 4/10-mile semi-banked oval came back in 2022, in what can be described as a night of drama. Point leader Chad Simpson started scratch on the field and raced up to 6th, while two time series Champion Tony Jackson Jr. started fast by setting quick time and winning his respective heat race, only to have to surrender his pole position prior to the start of the 30 lapper due to mechanical issues. Chase Junghans was able to capitalize, and raced to his second career Lucas Oil MLRA win over Andrew Kosiski, while current Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year leader Aaron Marrant score a career best and rounded out the podium in third. The weekend will conclude on Saturday night at the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO with the Inaugural "K.C. Cup" presented by Mid American Automation Services. Located just east of the KC metro area, Saturday nights showdown will pay $7,000 to win & $700 to start. This will mark just the second stop all-time for the MLRA at the high banked 1/2-mile facility. Hudson O'Neal captured the win in 2022 at I-70 in an event co-sanctioned with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), while mother nature erased both attempts at an MLRA return in 2023. After sitting idle for many years, I-70 reopened in 2021 following an extensive renovation project which included many updates to the fan experience along with the removal of the asphalt surface and a return to the dirt. I-70 hosted numerous dirt events from 1981 to 1987 during its original dirt track phase, with the likes of KC area veteran Rick Beebe and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Roger Dolan both capturing victories on the high banks in Busch All-Star Tour Series events. - Lucas Oil Speedway CMH Diamond Nationals Spotlight: Looney still aims high, despite part-time racing status
WHEATLAND, MO. (July 11, 2024) - No matter how much or how little Payton Looney races, he always will have a cherished trophy on his Late Model resume: Show-Me 100 champion. Looney scored a popular win for the home-area fans in 2020 when the Republic driver captured the Show-Me 100 at Lucas Oil Speedway, becoming only the second Missourian to bag the crown-jewel event. He went on to lead the Lucas Oil MLRA Series championship chase most of that season before falling just short of the title. Since that time, Looney has dialed back his racing schedule, focusing on family and work commitments. Not that his passion for racing has waned when the chances arise. Any time he goes to the track, Looney believes he can run up front. That will be no different on Saturday night when the 30-year-old enters the 18th annual CMH Diamond Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Lucas Oil Speedway. "The goal never changes and if it does, I need to find a different hobby," Looney said of his desire of contending for a victory with the biggest names of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Lucas Oil MLRA. Achieving that goal is more challenging as a part-time competitor. Looney has run his lightly raced Capital chassis only a handful of times since trading his Show-Me 100-winning car for it last season. Luck has not been an ally in 2024 as Looney has entered three Super Late Model events and left two with mechanical issues. Looney didn't make the Show-Me 100 starting field in May after a first-night steering issue buried him in qualifying points. Last weekend at Monett Speedway, in the new Southern Outlaw Late Model Series, he was felled by rear-end gear issues. Last season he suited up nine times with a fourth place in the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson, a Show-Me 100 preliminary, the highest finish. That got him into the big show, but he pulled off early and wound up 29th. Asked how frustrating the season has been so far, Looney laughed and said, "I don't race enough to get super down." "Yeah, it is frustrating, but hopefully we get it turned around (Saturday) at a place where we've had a lot of success in the past." As for the gap that widens a bit more each season against those who race for a living, Looney said it's reality of the situation. That would be different if he was still keeping a regular Late Model racing schedule, but Looney is happy about where he's at in life. He and wife Emilee are raising son Baylor (6) and daughter Elliott (4). Baylor is playing multiple sports and has a youth baseball tournament on Saturday. "I can watch the early games before we leave for the races," he said. "The kids are good, the wife is good. We are living a good life. "I always look forward to racing (at Wheatland) in front of friends and family. Hopefully we can have a good showing and make the race and be competitive." Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., is defending champ of the Diamond Nationals and will be shooting for his fifth win in the $20,000-to-win event. Davenport also will be shooting for his ninth feature victory at Lucas Oil Speedway over the last two seasons. Also on the Saturday program will be the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds, chasing $1,000-to-win, and the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars with a $750 top prize. Pit gates open at 4 pm. Saturday with grandstands at 5, hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05. - LUCAS OIL MLRA HITS THE TRACK FOR 18TH ANNUAL "DIAMOND NATIONALS"
Wheatland, Missouri (July 9, 2024) - For the first time in over a month, the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will roar back to life this weekend with another Crown Jewel opportunity as teams converge upon the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The 18th Annual CMH "Diamond Nationals" Presented by Summit Racing Equipment will take center stage, pairing the best of the MLRA with their counterparts from the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) in this annual co-sanctioned classic. This year's Diamond Nationals will also see an increase from the previous $15,000 top prize, as the winner will now take home $20,000 for their efforts. Jonathan Davenport not only enters the weekend as the defending winner after topping a 40-car field in 2023, but the Blairsville, GA driver is also a 4-time winner of the coveted Diamond Ring which goes to the winner. Other recent winners of note include Johnny Scott in 2022, Chris Ferguson in 2020, and Jimmy Owens in 2019. A total of 13 nights remain on the 2024 Lucas Oil MLRA schedule, and with five of those nights taking place at the Lucas Oil Speedway, the Diamond of Dirt Tracks is likely to play a major role in determining the series championship. Here is the Midseason breakdown of the top ten MLRA drivers heading into this weekend's action. BREAKDOWN: MLRA MID-SEASON TOP 10 1.) CHAD SIMPSON (Point Leader) — The four-time series Champ continues to stand on top of the Midwest Sheet Metal Point Leader Challenge Standings, as he tries to track down a third consecutive crown. Engine troubles plagued Simpson in his last MLRA outing at the Callaway Raceway, but the Mt. Vernon, Iowa driver still managed to nurse his ride home to a valuable 8th place finish, something that could loom large come October. And the fact he has more MLRA wins to date (4) at Lucas Oil Speedway than any other active driver int the top ten, could spell trouble for those trying to take the crown away from the defending champ. 2.) GORDY GUNDAKER (-10 points) — In his first full season with the MLRA, Gundaker has positioned himself well into the Championship Conversation. Despite an 18th place run in the season opener, the former WoO regular has rebounded with a podium run at the Adams County Speedway (IL) followed by another top five at the Callaway Raceway. The big boost for the St. Charles, MO driver came in the Show-Me 100 as he topped the MLRA regulars and wrestled his Longhorn Chassis to a strong 8th place finish. 3.) CHRIS SIMPSON (-15 points) — Yes, this makes three drivers separated by just 15 points. The defending MLRA runner-up continues to hang around stalking the top spot by virtue of his 4 top ten finishes, including a podium at Callaway Raceway. A 16-time career MLRA winner, Simpson is yet to find his way to victory lane at Wheatland, but he was the highest finishing MLRA regular during both qualifying nights for this year's Show-Me 100, proving that he has the speed should he decide to go after what would be his first series championship since winning the 2016 Corn Belt Clash title. 4.) TREVOR GUNDAKER (-90 points) — The runner-up in last season's SUNOCO Rookie of the Year Battle, Gundaker has already doubled up on his top ten finishes from all of last year with the MLRA. The former MLRA winner also had an impressive 11th place finish in the Show-Me 100 that helped him stay well within striking distance of the lead trio of drivers. Adding in another 3 top tens finishes in recent weeks following the Summer Nationals Tour and the 21 year old will be one to keep an eye on down the stretch as long as the MLRA heads to his home track Tri-City Speedway for the finale. 5.) DILLON MCCOWAN (-90 points) — After a rocky start to his MLRA season, the defending Sunoco Rookie of the Year has bounced back as of late, collecting his first career MLRA win at the Callaway Raceway to firmly put him back into the Championship discussion. With 5 races remaining in his playground of the Lucas Oil Speedway, and the fact he quite possibly has more seat time thus far in 2024 than any other MLRA driver, don't take your eyes off this 20-year-old. After finishing no better than 15th in his first 3 MLRA starts of the season, if this team can continue their current string of strong runs it could make for a storybook ending to his sophomore campaign. 6.) TONY JACKSON JR. (-125 points) — The two-time Lucas Oil MLRA Champion started the season with the Championship point lead following a strong 5th place run in the season opener in April. Since then, he has a trio of finishes that come just outside the top ten. After a mid-season break in 2022, the Lebanon, MO driver returned to the track winning 4 of the next 6 MLRA races in his transition to Capital Chassis. As Jackson and company continue to search for more speed, it would not be a surprise to see him once again go on a late summer rampage and close the gap as he looks for MLRA title # 3. 7.) EARL PEARSON JR. (-140 points) — **Hurricane Warning** After failing to make the starting field in the season opener, Pearson looked more like a strong "Category 5" in recent weeks, recording runner-up finishes in the last two regular MLRA events to close in on championship leaders. The 4-time LOLMDS Champion has 4 MLRA wins to his credit, with three of those coming at the Lucas Oil Speedway. 8.) JEFF HERZOG (-215 points) — After recording a trio of top 10's in his first full season a year ago, Herzog is still on the hunt for his first top ten of 2024. Two of those top tens came at tracks the MLRA will visit in the second half of the season in the Davenport Speedway(7th) and Moberly Motorsports Park(6th). Typically one of MLRA's top qualifiers, and a former quick timer at the Lucas Oil Speedway, Herzog looks to be a strong "second half team" that has high potential for making some noise down the stretch. 9.) CLAYTON STUCKEY (-270 points) — The Shreveport, LA driver has been a pleasant addition to the MLRA in 2024. A 12th place run at the Adams County Speedway in May, followed by an MLRA career best 7th place run at the Callaway Raceway has help to vault the Black Diamond race team inside the top ten, and well into contention for a share of the MLRA's $60,000 season ending point fund. 10.) AARON MARRANT (-290 points) — The MLRA's leader in the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year category checks in at the # 10 spot. A large portion of the remaining MLRA schedule sets up nicely for the Richmond, MO driver will stop's close to home at Lakeside Speedway and Moberly Motorsports Park. In his last MLRA stop at Lakeside in 2022, Marrant recorded his best MLRA finish to date with a 3rd place run. Add in a win last Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 and the confidence should be on the rise for the 1x team. - 18th annual CMH Diamond Nationals roll into Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday
WHEATLAND, MO. (July 9, 2024) - The mission for the rest of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series field at Saturday's 18th annual CMH Diamond Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment would seem pretty clear cut. Don't let Jonathan Davenport get the lead. Otherwise, the Blairsville, Ga., driver might not give it up. Davenport will be shooting for his ninth feature victory at Lucas Oil Speedway over the last two seasons when the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Lucas Oil MLRA return to Wheatland for the mid-summer classic. The Diamond Nationals winner - Davenport is defending champ - will earn $20,000 and a diamond ring. Not only has Davenport won at Lucas Oil Speedway often, he's done so in dominant fashion. In those eight wins since April 1, 2023, Davenport has led an astonishing 235 of 240 laps. That included a wire-to-wire triumph at the Show-Me 100 Presented by Missouri Division of Tourism on May 25th of this year and all 90 laps of last summer's now-defunct SRX Series where he topped a podium that included Brad Keselowski and Ken Schrader. Davenport enters a three-race Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series swing that begins Thursday at 34 Raceway second in championship points behind Ricky Thornton Jr. Intrigue was injected into the series in recent days with the announcement that Thornton and SSI Motorsports have parted ways, despite his success in the first half of 2024. Thornton, of Chandler, Ariz., won more than 60 races with the team over the past two seasons. Three of those have been at Lucas Oil Speedway, in preliminary nights for the Show-Me 100 and a Lucas Oil MLRA Spring Nationals feature. Thornton drove a car owned by Steve Sheppard in a Monday FloRacing Night in America Tour at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway, where he finished seventh. The series lead for Thornton if 235 points over Davenport with Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio 355 behind. Also on the Saturday program will be the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds, chasing $1,000-to-win, and the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars with a $750 top prize. Pit gates open at 4 pm. - Wells rolls in headline feature at Lucas Oil Speedway Casey's Thursday Night Thunder as Sheets, Johnson also grab wins
WHEATLAND, MO. (July 4, 2024) - Score another Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model victory for Justin Wells at Lucas Oil Speedway. The veteran driver from Aurora led all 25 laps to capture the Casey's Thursday Night Thunder Presented by State Tech feature headliner. It was his eighth feature win in nine attempts at Lucas Oil Speedway this season and earned him $1,000. Also winning features on the program, which included the annual Kids' Bicycle Giveaway during intermission and post-race fireworks, were Jon Sheets (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods) and Matt Johnson (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds). After three cautions before an official lap could be completed in the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature, lightning began moving into the vicinity of the speedway and the feature was postponed. A total of 119 cars checked into the pits for the holiday special. Wells posted victory No. 113 in his 2006 TNT chassis. He needed only five laps to open a 1.2-second lead over Andy Bryant with Tucker Cox running third. Bryant whittled the margin to one-quarter second by lap 10 as he pulled within two car lengths of the leader. As Wells started to weave through lapped traffic, he extended the lead back to just over one second before Bryant again was able to close in. Just as before, Wells seemed to find an extra boost when needed and he again opened a one-second gap by lap 17 as the green-flag laps clicked by. Wells kept it rolling from there to pick up his latest victory, finishing one second behind Bryant at the checkers in a caution-free main event. Cox finished third with Brandon Conkwright coming from 10th to fourth and Jim Greenway fifth. Wells said he had some doubts about what kind of track to expect after it was reworked during intermission. But any fears that it would not to be to his liking were put aside quickly. "I wondered what it would do, whether it would be too fast," Wells said. "The track was multi-grip anywhere you want to go. Hats off to (track superintendent Richard Turner) because the track was awesome." Wells extended his points lead, which was a huge 340-point margin over Cox to begin the night, to 360 points. Sheets wires field for USRA B-Mod win: Jon Sheets of Nevada started up front and led all 20 laps to earn the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature over Shadren Turner. Sheets started on the pole and led Turner through the first nine laps, opening a .791-second lead. That's when the first caution came out for a two-car mishap in turn two. The two leaders broke away after the restart with Turner pressuring Sheets for the lead. Turner briefly went in front on lap 14, but Sheets crossed back over in turn three to regain the top spot. They were separated by .356 seconds when a lap-16 caution slowed the field, leaving four laps to settle the outcome. Sheets took advantage of a slip by Turner on the restart and rolled away to his second feature win of the season. He finished 1.3 seconds in front of Turner with Trevor Drake third, Logan Smith a season-best fourth and Andy Bryant fifth. "We have a really good racecar right now," Sheets said after knocking down his 10th feature win of the season overall. "Big props to Eagle Machine. They make good power, and J2 Chassis, they're awesome, and our whole list of sponsors." Matt Johnson earns USRA Modifieds triumph: Matt Johnson led all 20 laps, overcoming a couple of restarts after cautions, to beat Robbie Reed for the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified win. Johnson, from Archie, Mo., used the outside groove to lead fellow front-row starter Reed on the opening lap. By lap four, Johnson had built a 1.6-second lead over Reed with Chad Lyle running in third. That's when action slowed for a caution. Johnson's domination continued after the restart, with his lead swelling to 2.3-second at the midpoint on lap 10, with Lyle having moved past Reed for second. Three laps later, the race's second caution flew to set up a restart with seven laps left. There were no problems for Johnson the rest of the way. He drove to a 1.6-second win over Reed. Dayton Pursley, a USRA Modified rookie after moving up from B-Mods, finished third with Houston Johnson fourth and Lyle fifth. "Thank you to all the fans for showing up. I know it was an iffy deal with the weather but they did an awesome job," Johnson said of the track. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Darren Phillips looks to make final racing season a memorable one
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 12, 2024) - Darren Phillips has enjoyed a 27-year racing career on area dirt tracks, driving in a variety of divisions along the way. His top goal always has been to enjoy the ride, with his family. It all began when Phillips got to race with his brother, Darrell Rife in 4-cylinders at Nevada Speedway, and has evolved to racing with his 23-year-old son Dalton Phillips. But Darren's time behind the wheel is starting to wind down. Phillips announced earlier this year that the 2024 racing season would be his last. He's doing so by realizing a long-time dream of driving a Late Model and Phillips is having a solid season, currently eighth in the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model points chase at Lucas Oil Speedway. "Last year we went out and played around on the boat, did a bunch of other stuff with family, and had fun with it," Phillips said. "It's time to find something else to do. I've enjoyed my racing career a lot. I've met a lot of my closest friends racing. "About everywhere you go you're going to meet somebody or run into somebody you know. You're gonna run into some people you have hard feelings with. But the next time, they might become some of your closest friends. I've had a few of those." Phillips, 46, is looking forward to Saturday night's doubleheader at his hometown track in Wheatland. Along with the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series Midseason Championships, the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will run their makeup feature from a May 25th rainout. That $2,000-to-win race will lead off the program. Phillips has been a familiar face on area speedways, going back to the opening of the original Wheatland Raceway in the early 2000s. Phillips drove Factory Stocks in those days and has spent time in Modifieds, B-Mods, Mod Lites and USRA Stock Cars before finally taking a shot at Late Models midway through last season. "That was my dream since I was a little kid," Phillips said, recalling how he grew up watching MLRA Late Model standouts like Alan Vaughan and David Turner race at Nevada. "I loved watching all those guys and my dream was to run a Late Model. I knew I couldn't afford it … I still can't afford it, but I do what I can. "When I had a chance to get into first Late Model I bought last year, I had a blast." Phillips traded his USRA Stock Car for a Late Model this season has said it's "been a fun time" as he's adjusted to car. "We started out the year a little rocky trying to learn the new car," he said. "I think I've got it working pretty good now. I've had a few good runs the last little bit. I'm looking forward to this weekend after the last three weekends when I've run pretty strong." Included were a pair of ninth-place feature runs at Lucas Oil Speedway and a fifth at Central Missouri Speedway. He's eighth in Lucas Oil Speedway points, putting him within realistic range of achieving one of his goals. "I would like to finish top five at Lucas for points and finish top 10, if not the top five, in (POWRi) national points," he said. "Those are the biggest goals to end my career." The 2021 USRA Stock Cars Central Region champion and 2023 Bolivar Speedway champ in USRA Stock Cars said he has a lot of people to thank for supporting his racing career. Topping the list are his significant other, Bobbi Lehman, and five children. The family serves as his crew on race nights. "I just want to thank everybody that's helped me and thank all my kids for being there and helping me and thank my wife for sticking with me," Phillips said. "My kids have been with me 100 percent. I've enjoyed doing this with my kids." The Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series Midseason Championship is Presented by the Bolivar Herald-Free Press. Look for discount coupons to Saturday's action in The Bolivar Herald-Free Press. Action will get underway with the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models running their 30-lap makeup feature from a rainout on the final night of the Show-Me 100. The $2,000-to-win feature, using the lineup that was set to run on May 25th, will follow hot laps the regular racing program will get underway after the makeup race. Midseason champions will be crowned in all four weekly divisions - the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA B-Mods, Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and POWRi Late Models. POWRi Super Stocks have been added as a special guest class with a $500-to-win feature. This Saturday's regularly-scheduled Late Model feature also marks the beginning of a "bounty" on Late Model points leader and defending track champion Justin Wells. The bounty will start at $500 to any driver able to beat Wells and each week that the bounty doesn't get claimed, $100 will be added - June 22nd ($600), July 4th ($700), July 20th ($800) and July 27th ($900). If no one claims the bounty in the five-week hunt, then Wells will receive the $900 bounty money plus an extra $100 to make it an even $1,000. The bounty has to be earned legally, with the driver's car passing tech 100 percent and Wells has to have finished the race for it to be claimed. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday with grandstands at 4:30, hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.
