Lake Ozark Speedway Dirt Track News
- Courtney takes command late to capture Kubota High Limit Diamond Classic Night One feature victory
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 28, 2024) - Tyler Courtney took the lead with five laps remaining Friday night and went on to capture Night One of the Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic at Lucas Oil Speedway. Courtney, of Indianapolis, roared from third and into the lead after a lap 24 restart and went on to earn $10,000 with his fourth Kubota High Limit Racing feature win of the season. He beat Brad Sweet at the finish with James McFadden capturing third. The series returns for Saturday night's Diamond Classic finale with $25,000 awaiting the feature winner. "The last time I ran here, I won in a Midget (in 2016) and it's pretty cool to come back in a winged car and have success," the ninth-starting Courtney said in victory lane. "That was fun, a lot of fun." Courtney, driving for Clauson Marshall Racing, finished two seconds clear at the checkers as he pulled away from Brad Sweet and the rest after taking the lead on lap 25. He was the fourth and final leader of the 30-lapper. "The track was quite a bit different than the heats, but I don't think you could ask for much more than that," Courtney said of the action-packed event. "There was racing everywhere. A hot day, but a great day." Courtney picked up an additional $4,500 along with lucky fan Patrick Walker after the Durst Dice Roll, which was a nine - and Courtney won from ninth. Sye Lynch won the drag race with fellow front-row starter Corey Day and grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, with Sweet settling into third. The top three were separated by only one second when the first caution flew on lap three. Day grabbed the lead away from Lynch on the restart and used the cushion on the high side to open a 1.7-second lead in just four laps. He soon was dealing with lapped traffic and suddenly slowed to a crawl entering turn three on lap 10. Day, who won two nights earlier at Lake Ozark Speedway, was unable to continue. Lynch re-inherited the lead with Sweet second and Courtney third. Lynch pulled away after the restart to lead by nearly two seconds by lap 15. Action ground to a half at that point as Brent Marks rolled his car in turn four, bringing out the red flag. Sweet swept to the lead after the restart, coming on the outside of turn four to complete lap 17. Before he could get too far away from Lynch, a lap-20 caution flew as two cars spun in turn four. Lynch was applying the heat to Sweet with Courtney right behind when a caution appeared on lap 23 for a one-car spin in turn four, leaving seven laps to settle things. Courtney took second away from Lynch on lap 24, then grabbed the top spot the next time around. Courtney rolled from there, driving away for the victory over series points leader Sweet. McFadden, who started 13th, captured third with 14th-starting Tanner Thorson fourth and Lynch winding up fifth. "Luckily I was third there and Sye got Brad to moving around," Courtney said. "I just stuck to my guns there and just ran the top as hard as I could and came away with the win." Sweet said his car was not quite have the car dialed in enough to win. "I'm happy to get locked into a little bit better spot for tomorrow," Sweet said. "That's important on this prelim nights to run top four. I felt I wasn't quite good enough to win, no matter which line I was trying to run or make work it seemed like someone was pushing me. "Sye was getting back to my inside, so I committed to the inside. I just wasn't good enough. I had to slow the car down way too much to run the bottom, but running the top I would get spinning on the (turn) exit. Tyler was just clearly a little bit better than us tonight." Marks of Myerstown, Pa., set the fast qualifying time with a lap of 13.039 seocnds. That came up just shy of the track record held by Garet Williamson, who ran a 12.998 in the POWRi 410 Bandit Sprint Series on Aug. 19, 2023. Tyler Davis wins Heartland Modifieds: Tyler Davis of Haysville, Kan., took over the lead on lap 21 and held on to beat Tad Davis by half a second in the Heartland Modified Tour feature. Tad Davis rolled to the lead at the start and opened a 1.1-second lead over Chad Wheeler by lap 10. The leaders hit heavy lapped traffic soon after with Wheeler pulling alongside Tad Davis a couple of times, but was unable to get by. Tyler Davis joined the battle with Wheeler for second and he was able to take over with four laps to go. Gabe Hodges rallied late to grab third with Wheeler fourth and Kenton Allen coming home in fifth. The winner said he felt the continuous green-flag run worked to his advantage. Tyler Davis started third, right behind Tad Davis and Wheeler. "When we first took off, it was kind of humid out here tonight and it's easy to spin the tires," Tyler Davis said. "Once we got rolling, the maneuverability of our car showed. We've got some new stuff we were trying tonight and it was pretty good. "I'm glad to get back to victory lane. We've been getting our butt kicked lately against the USMTS Tour. I'm just happy to be up here." - Five drivers to watch as Kubota High Limit Diamond Classic makes its first visit to Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 27, 2024) - One of the most-anticipated events of the Lucas Oil Speedway season is coming up Friday and Saturday with the inaugural Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic. Feature winners will earn $10,000 on Friday with the stakes rising to $25,000 for Saturday's main-event winner. While many of the nation's elite 410 Winged Sprint drivers will be on hand, here are five to keep an eye on: Corey Day: The 18-year-old from Clovis, California, already was considered a rising star in the open-wheel world before he joined the Kubota High Limit series prior to the 2024 season. Day has lived up to the billing with five series feature victories, the latest of which might have been the most impressive. Day drove from a 15th starting position to the front in just 14 laps at Wednesday's Kubota High Limit Midweek Money Series at Lake Ozark Speedway. Day led the rest of the way to earn the $20,000 prize. It continued a huge recent stretch for Day. Last weekend, he won $79,6000 at the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Burlington, Washington. Earlier this year, he drove a late model on pavement for the first time, for JR Motorsports, and won a feature at Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. Brad Sweet: The 38-year-old Sweet, from Grass Valley, Calif., co-owns the Kubota High Limit Series with his brother-in-law, Kyle Larson. One of the big winners in sprint-car racing for two decades, Sweet leads the Kubota High Limit points chase and has six feature wins and 24 top-10 finishes in 25 events. The five-time World of Outlaw Sprint champion also has extensive experience driving in the NASCAR Nationwide Xfinity Series and Truck Series. Tyler Courtney: Another long-time big name in open-wheel racing, the 30-year-old from Indianapolis sits second in Kubota High Limit points 88 behind Sweet with three feature victories in the Clauson-Marshall Racing No. 7BC. After dominating the USAC ranks in the late 2010s with a Sprint Car and Midget championship to go along with 50-plus wins across three divisions, Courtney switched to wing racing in 2021 and quickly became one of the nation's best. Rico Abreu: Hailing from St. Helena, Calif., the 32-year-old Abreu has picked up two feature wins on the Kubota High Limit circuit in 2024 and stands fifth in points coming to Lucas Oil Speedway. Abreu emerged on the national scene by wining the Chili Bowl in back-to-back years, 2015 and 2016. Abreu won four of six Kubota High Limit Midweek Madness races in 2023 and came up a close second to Kyle Larson for the points title before signing on for full-time High Limit Racing in 2024. Ryan Timms: Another up-and-coming open-wheel star has experience finding victory lane at Lucas Oil Speedway. Ryan Timms, a 17-year-old from Oklahoma City, captured the prestigious Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial championship last fall, earning $10,000. In limited action with the Kubota High Limit circuit in 2024, Timms has picked up a pair of top-10 finishes. He has eight feature wins overall this season. Two-night reserved tickets at $80 are on sale online or by calling Admissions Director Nichole McMillan at (417) 295-6043 or they can be purchased online. Support class for the The Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic is the Modified Invitational featuring the Heartland Modified Tour. The HMT and Lucas Oil Speedway have selected 27 drivers to compete each night. The HMT invitees are Chad Wheeler, Jason Pursley, Dakota Dale, Kenton Allen, Dean Wille, Tyler Wolff, Henry Chambers, Chevy Coleman, Jarret Dotson, Nic Bidinger, Gunner Martin, Tad Davis and Brandon Givens; Lucas Oil Speedway has invited Joe Duvall, Rick Beebe, Chris Kratzer, Terry Phillips, Greg Scheffler, Trevor Hughes, Gabe Hodges, Chase Sigg, Ryan Middaugh, Tanner Mullens, Robbie Reed, Tyler Davis, Dayton Pursley and Chad Lyle. The schedule calls for pit gates to open at 4 p.m., spectator gates at 5 with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7:05 on both Friday and Saturday. Fans can visit highlimitracing.com to find out more about the series and the complete schedule for 2024. Info on the Heartland Modified Tour can be found at heartlandmodifiedtour.com. Dirt Road Addiction concert Friday after races: In addition to the racing action, the band Dirt Road Addiction will play following the action on Friday night from 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m. on the south end of the Midway. Dirt Road Addiction is described as a hard-hitting country and rock band based out of Missouri. Their sound has been described as "Jump-Country." Dirt Road Addiction has played all over the Midwest at venues such as Busch Stadium, the Missouri State Fair, Kauffman Stadium, Ozarks Amphitheater and various fairs, festivals and events. - LUCAS OIL MLRA DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND: CALLAWAY RACEWAY & SPRINGFIELD RACEWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (June 4, 2024) - It's a story of try again and welcome back, as the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) roars back to life with another Show-Me state double header of action this upcoming weekend. After a rain plagued spring that has wiped out a total of nine MLRA events, the series will go into make-up mode this weekend in hopes of getting a pair of points paying events in the record books. "It has been a tough spring for getting races in, that's for sure," commented MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich. "Back in April we were all set for a great weekend of racing at Callaway and then at Lake Ozark Speedway for the annual "Battle at the Beach" until mother nature had other plans. I know promotor Kenny Brown had put a lot of work into making that entire weekend a success, unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts we just couldn't move the entire weekend like we had all hoped. So we've improvised to get our teams racing for the championship some races, and hope to get back to Lake Ozark again next year." Action this weekend will get started on Friday night June 7th with a stop off at the Callaway Raceway in Fulton, MO. This event was originally scheduled for April 26th before being a part of the washed-out weekend. This will be the MLRA's second try at a first ever visit to the Callaway Raceway with drivers chase after a $5,000 to win top prize. Described as a ¼ mile semi-banked bull ring oval, Callaway Raceway is located just north of Jefferson City, MO. "We are always excited to get into new territory and bring our teams to new tracks and race in front of new faces," commented MLRA director Ernie Leftwich. "It's been pretty evident through social media that there is a lot of excitement around bringing this race to Callaway, so we excited to be able to make it happen yet this season and looking forward to seeing our drivers battling it out this weekend." The following night, June 8th will bring a homecoming of sorts for the MLRA to the mighty Springfield Raceway, located just off I-44 in Springfield, MO. This $5,000 to win event was an addition to the MLRA schedule after the rash of spring rainouts to help round out the weekend with a double header for the traveling race teams. The MLRA's last visit to the ¼ mile semi-banked clay oval came back in 2012 with Brad Looney making the trip to victory lane. A total of seven MLRA events have been contested at the Springfield facility, with other winners including Jesse Stovall, Al Purkey, Terry Phillips, Jeremy Payne, and John Anderson. Anderson is the only multiple-time winner in series history. For track owner Jerry Hoffman, the return of the MLRA to Springfield has been a long time coming. "Having the MLRA is a big deal for us. I remember back when I was a kid 36 years ago, when Randy Mooneyham and Kenny Essary started the MLRA series. Ernie and myself have talked about doing this for several years, we just couldn't ever get the deal to work out, so it means a lot to me because this is the series that I grew up watching when I was a kid. To think that it's still around now after all these years is pretty remarkable." Many of the series current drivers have little to no experience at the Springfield track, so Hoffman is anxious to see if the local drivers have an advantage at a track that he describes as a ¼ mile that races like a fast 3/8. "It can for sure throw a curveball to a driver that has never been here before, because it races faster than you realize," explained Hoffman. Adding to its uniqueness' he comments, "It's one of those tracks that's not shaped real good. It's probably not shaped politically correct I guess you could say, but it races really good. The bottom is usually there, and we usually have a cushion up top that makes for multiple grooves of racing." A late addition to the MLRA schedule, Hoffman said that it's not easy trying to put together an event of this caliber on short notice, but that he was ready for the opportunity to get the MLRA back to Springfield and wanted to make sure it happened. "Chris and Jan Davis and their group at Midwest Sheet Metal are huge supporters of dirt track racing in our area, and we really appreciate them coming on board as presenting sponsors for this event. With this race not being on our original schedule this year it's taken some work in a short amount of time to make it happen, and we couldn't do it without people like them and Midwest Sheet Metal." - Lucas Oil Speedway takes this weekend off with action set to resume June 8th; POWRi Late Model makeup June 15th
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 28, 2024) - Following a busy Show-Me 100 weekend, Lucas Oil Speedway will take this weekend off before resuming the Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series on June 8th with a scheduling change. To work with other area tracks and sanctioning bodies to help support car counts, the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will not be on the June 8th schedule. The Lucas Oil MLRA is racing that night at Springfield Raceway and Lake Ozark Speedway has a Cash Money Series event that night. "Those Late Model drivers who race with us weekly can attend those events can attend one of those events and support them also," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. Lorton also announced that Mod Lites will be added to the June 8th event as a guest class, racing for $500 to win and $75 to start. The Clear Creek Golf Car USRA B-Mods will be the featured class that evening, running a 25-lap, $750-to-win main event. The Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars also will be in action. That will be a busy weekend at the speedway as it also marks the first appearance this season for the Kentucky Drag Boat Association on Lake Lucas. The KDBA Summer Thunder on Lake Lucas will be in action both June 8-9. Check out kydragboat.com for more on the series. POWRi Late Model makeup and Wells bounty: The Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models will return on June 15th and make up their rained out special from the Show-Me 100. The feature will run prior to the start of the regular racing program, going 30 laps for $2,000 to win. That evening's regular program also will be the first "bounty" on reigning track champion Justin Wells, who is 5-for-5 in POWRi Late Model features this season after winning 11 times in 2023. Lorton said the bounty will start at $500 to any drivrer able to beat Wells. Each week that the bounty doesn't get claimed, $100 will be added - June 15th ($500), June 22nd ($600), July 4th ($700), July 20th ($800) and July 27th ($900). "If no one claims the bounty in the five-week hunt, then Wells will receive the $900 bounty money which we will top it off with a extra $100 to make it a even $1,000 if he can outrun the bounty hunters," Lorton said. "These four races, the bounty has to be earned legally, the driver's car has to pass tech 100%, Justin has to have finished the race for it to be claimed. There also are some other schedule changes for the remainder of the season: Full Fender Challenge coming Aug. 17: With Central Missouri Speedway and I-70 Speedway both having Super Stock specials on July 27th, Lucas Oil Speedway will not run Super Stocks that night as they were added as a guest class. On Aug. 17th, along with POWRi Summer Thunder 410 Sprints and 305s plus the POWRi Super Stocks, the USRA Stock Cars have been added to this event for what is being called the "Super Stocks vs Stock Cars Full Fender Challenge." POWRi super stocks will race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start feature with $100 entry fee. USRA Stock Cars will race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start feature with $100 entry fee. Then the top 12 from the Super Stock feature and top 12 from the Stock Cars feature will enter into a Super Stock vs Stock Car Full Fender Challenge race for $1,500 to win, $150 to start. The top 12 from each feature will draw for their starting spots in the Full Fender Challenge Race. POWRi Super Stocks will earn POWRi National points for their feature and USRA Stock Cars will earn their sanctioning series points, and track points for their individual feature. No points will be awarded for the Stock Car vs Super Stock Full Fender Challenge. "It's all for fun, glory and payout money," Lorton said.
