- LUCAS OIL MLRA HITS THE TRACK FOR 18TH ANNUAL "DIAMOND NATIONALS"
Wheatland, Missouri (July 9, 2024) - For the first time in over a month, the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will roar back to life this weekend with another Crown Jewel opportunity as teams converge upon the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The 18th Annual CMH "Diamond Nationals" Presented by Summit Racing Equipment will take center stage, pairing the best of the MLRA with their counterparts from the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) in this annual co-sanctioned classic. This year's Diamond Nationals will also see an increase from the previous $15,000 top prize, as the winner will now take home $20,000 for their efforts. Jonathan Davenport not only enters the weekend as the defending winner after topping a 40-car field in 2023, but the Blairsville, GA driver is also a 4-time winner of the coveted Diamond Ring which goes to the winner. Other recent winners of note include Johnny Scott in 2022, Chris Ferguson in 2020, and Jimmy Owens in 2019. A total of 13 nights remain on the 2024 Lucas Oil MLRA schedule, and with five of those nights taking place at the Lucas Oil Speedway, the Diamond of Dirt Tracks is likely to play a major role in determining the series championship. Here is the Midseason breakdown of the top ten MLRA drivers heading into this weekend's action. BREAKDOWN: MLRA MID-SEASON TOP 10 1.) CHAD SIMPSON (Point Leader) — The four-time series Champ continues to stand on top of the Midwest Sheet Metal Point Leader Challenge Standings, as he tries to track down a third consecutive crown. Engine troubles plagued Simpson in his last MLRA outing at the Callaway Raceway, but the Mt. Vernon, Iowa driver still managed to nurse his ride home to a valuable 8th place finish, something that could loom large come October. And the fact he has more MLRA wins to date (4) at Lucas Oil Speedway than any other active driver int the top ten, could spell trouble for those trying to take the crown away from the defending champ. 2.) GORDY GUNDAKER (-10 points) — In his first full season with the MLRA, Gundaker has positioned himself well into the Championship Conversation. Despite an 18th place run in the season opener, the former WoO regular has rebounded with a podium run at the Adams County Speedway (IL) followed by another top five at the Callaway Raceway. The big boost for the St. Charles, MO driver came in the Show-Me 100 as he topped the MLRA regulars and wrestled his Longhorn Chassis to a strong 8th place finish. 3.) CHRIS SIMPSON (-15 points) — Yes, this makes three drivers separated by just 15 points. The defending MLRA runner-up continues to hang around stalking the top spot by virtue of his 4 top ten finishes, including a podium at Callaway Raceway. A 16-time career MLRA winner, Simpson is yet to find his way to victory lane at Wheatland, but he was the highest finishing MLRA regular during both qualifying nights for this year's Show-Me 100, proving that he has the speed should he decide to go after what would be his first series championship since winning the 2016 Corn Belt Clash title. 4.) TREVOR GUNDAKER (-90 points) — The runner-up in last season's SUNOCO Rookie of the Year Battle, Gundaker has already doubled up on his top ten finishes from all of last year with the MLRA. The former MLRA winner also had an impressive 11th place finish in the Show-Me 100 that helped him stay well within striking distance of the lead trio of drivers. Adding in another 3 top tens finishes in recent weeks following the Summer Nationals Tour and the 21 year old will be one to keep an eye on down the stretch as long as the MLRA heads to his home track Tri-City Speedway for the finale. 5.) DILLON MCCOWAN (-90 points) — After a rocky start to his MLRA season, the defending Sunoco Rookie of the Year has bounced back as of late, collecting his first career MLRA win at the Callaway Raceway to firmly put him back into the Championship discussion. With 5 races remaining in his playground of the Lucas Oil Speedway, and the fact he quite possibly has more seat time thus far in 2024 than any other MLRA driver, don't take your eyes off this 20-year-old. After finishing no better than 15th in his first 3 MLRA starts of the season, if this team can continue their current string of strong runs it could make for a storybook ending to his sophomore campaign. 6.) TONY JACKSON JR. (-125 points) — The two-time Lucas Oil MLRA Champion started the season with the Championship point lead following a strong 5th place run in the season opener in April. Since then, he has a trio of finishes that come just outside the top ten. After a mid-season break in 2022, the Lebanon, MO driver returned to the track winning 4 of the next 6 MLRA races in his transition to Capital Chassis. As Jackson and company continue to search for more speed, it would not be a surprise to see him once again go on a late summer rampage and close the gap as he looks for MLRA title # 3. 7.) EARL PEARSON JR. (-140 points) — **Hurricane Warning** After failing to make the starting field in the season opener, Pearson looked more like a strong "Category 5" in recent weeks, recording runner-up finishes in the last two regular MLRA events to close in on championship leaders. The 4-time LOLMDS Champion has 4 MLRA wins to his credit, with three of those coming at the Lucas Oil Speedway. 8.) JEFF HERZOG (-215 points) — After recording a trio of top 10's in his first full season a year ago, Herzog is still on the hunt for his first top ten of 2024. Two of those top tens came at tracks the MLRA will visit in the second half of the season in the Davenport Speedway(7th) and Moberly Motorsports Park(6th). Typically one of MLRA's top qualifiers, and a former quick timer at the Lucas Oil Speedway, Herzog looks to be a strong "second half team" that has high potential for making some noise down the stretch. 9.) CLAYTON STUCKEY (-270 points) — The Shreveport, LA driver has been a pleasant addition to the MLRA in 2024. A 12th place run at the Adams County Speedway in May, followed by an MLRA career best 7th place run at the Callaway Raceway has help to vault the Black Diamond race team inside the top ten, and well into contention for a share of the MLRA's $60,000 season ending point fund. 10.) AARON MARRANT (-290 points) — The MLRA's leader in the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year category checks in at the # 10 spot. A large portion of the remaining MLRA schedule sets up nicely for the Richmond, MO driver will stop's close to home at Lakeside Speedway and Moberly Motorsports Park. In his last MLRA stop at Lakeside in 2022, Marrant recorded his best MLRA finish to date with a 3rd place run. Add in a win last Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 and the confidence should be on the rise for the 1x team. - DILLON MCCOWAN SCORES EXCITING FIRST CAREER MLRA WIN AT CALLAWAY RACEWAY
Fulton, MO (June 7, 2024) - Dillon McCowan used some late race heroics and trackside experience, to overtake Earl Pearson Jr. late in the going to capture his first career Lucas Oil MLRA win on Friday at the Callaway Raceway in Fulton, MO. A total of 32 drivers checked in for the MLRA's first ever stop at Callaway, and they left fans with a great first showing from start to finish. Derrick Stewart started off the night by grabbing his first career My Race Pass "Fast Time Award" with a Group "B" lap time of 14.522. Heat race victories were recorded by Chris Simpson, Earl Pearson Jr., Stewart, and Kyle Beard. Qualifying issues left Pearson starting in the 8th and final position on the grid, but the Jacksonville, FL driver raced his way all the way to the win, capturing the nights Swift Springs "Move of the Race" in the process. The 30-lap feature would find Chris Simpson starting on the pole alongside of fellow Iowan Derrick Stewart. Simpson would take control from the drop of the green, until lap nine when Pearson used a consistent low line to take the lead away from Simpson as the duo worked off the exit of turn two. Pearson quickly found the backside of the 24-car field and had to navigate lapped traffic during the balance of the feature, all the while trying to keep Simpson and sixth starting Dillon McCowan in his rearview mirror. As the laps began to count down, McCowan continued to apply pressure on the top line of the speedway, pulling up alongside of the Lucas # 46 of Pearson multiple times in three and four before having his run brought to a halt by lapped traffic multiple times. The top two of Pearson and McCowan finally found clean race track with just under five laps to go, and with just three laps to go McCowan took advantage of a clean race track to drive by Pearson exiting turn four to grab the lead for the first time. McCowan would lead the final three circuits and go on to capture the $5,000 to win main event. The victory marks the first career Lucas Oil MLRA win for the series defending Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year winner. Pearson held on for his second MLRA runner-up finish of the year while Chris Simpson completed the podium trio. Gordy Gundaker would grab his second top five of the year in fourth while Stewart hung on for a fifth-place run, his best to date under the MLRA banner. Current point leader Chad Simpson finished in eighth, which allowed the points chase to tighten. Chris Simpson returns to second, only 15 points out of the Championship lead while Gundaker is now just 20 back of the four-time series champion Chad Simpson. McCowan commented on the battle with Pearson in saying, "It was definitely a hard-fought battle. That lapped traffic played a big big factor in it. It was breaking his run, but it was also breaking my run at the same time. I don't know if I call it a quick feature because it felt like an eternity in there the way we was running around there." The caution free 30 lapper went at a lightening pace, taking only 8:03 to run start to finish. "I was getting a run on the top there and I knew he was going to be glued to the bottom because it was definitely the fast way around the track," continued McCowan. "I would just get a good run and I'd hook it good through one and two and we would catch him down the back stretch and then I would have to whoa it up. Once we finally got clear of them (lapped traffic) I was like it's either going to be wreckers or checkers now, I didn't lift." Lucas Oil MLRA action continues on Saturday night June 8th at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, MO with another $5,000 to win showdown. This will mark the MLRA's first trip to the ¼ mile facility since 2012 and just the 8th time in the series 36-year history. - LUCAS OIL MLRA DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND: CALLAWAY RACEWAY & SPRINGFIELD RACEWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (June 4, 2024) - It's a story of try again and welcome back, as the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) roars back to life with another Show-Me state double header of action this upcoming weekend. After a rain plagued spring that has wiped out a total of nine MLRA events, the series will go into make-up mode this weekend in hopes of getting a pair of points paying events in the record books. "It has been a tough spring for getting races in, that's for sure," commented MLRA Series Director Ernie Leftwich. "Back in April we were all set for a great weekend of racing at Callaway and then at Lake Ozark Speedway for the annual "Battle at the Beach" until mother nature had other plans. I know promotor Kenny Brown had put a lot of work into making that entire weekend a success, unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts we just couldn't move the entire weekend like we had all hoped. So we've improvised to get our teams racing for the championship some races, and hope to get back to Lake Ozark again next year." Action this weekend will get started on Friday night June 7th with a stop off at the Callaway Raceway in Fulton, MO. This event was originally scheduled for April 26th before being a part of the washed-out weekend. This will be the MLRA's second try at a first ever visit to the Callaway Raceway with drivers chase after a $5,000 to win top prize. Described as a ¼ mile semi-banked bull ring oval, Callaway Raceway is located just north of Jefferson City, MO. "We are always excited to get into new territory and bring our teams to new tracks and race in front of new faces," commented MLRA director Ernie Leftwich. "It's been pretty evident through social media that there is a lot of excitement around bringing this race to Callaway, so we excited to be able to make it happen yet this season and looking forward to seeing our drivers battling it out this weekend." The following night, June 8th will bring a homecoming of sorts for the MLRA to the mighty Springfield Raceway, located just off I-44 in Springfield, MO. This $5,000 to win event was an addition to the MLRA schedule after the rash of spring rainouts to help round out the weekend with a double header for the traveling race teams. The MLRA's last visit to the ¼ mile semi-banked clay oval came back in 2012 with Brad Looney making the trip to victory lane. A total of seven MLRA events have been contested at the Springfield facility, with other winners including Jesse Stovall, Al Purkey, Terry Phillips, Jeremy Payne, and John Anderson. Anderson is the only multiple-time winner in series history. For track owner Jerry Hoffman, the return of the MLRA to Springfield has been a long time coming. "Having the MLRA is a big deal for us. I remember back when I was a kid 36 years ago, when Randy Mooneyham and Kenny Essary started the MLRA series. Ernie and myself have talked about doing this for several years, we just couldn't ever get the deal to work out, so it means a lot to me because this is the series that I grew up watching when I was a kid. To think that it's still around now after all these years is pretty remarkable." Many of the series current drivers have little to no experience at the Springfield track, so Hoffman is anxious to see if the local drivers have an advantage at a track that he describes as a ¼ mile that races like a fast 3/8. "It can for sure throw a curveball to a driver that has never been here before, because it races faster than you realize," explained Hoffman. Adding to its uniqueness' he comments, "It's one of those tracks that's not shaped real good. It's probably not shaped politically correct I guess you could say, but it races really good. The bottom is usually there, and we usually have a cushion up top that makes for multiple grooves of racing." A late addition to the MLRA schedule, Hoffman said that it's not easy trying to put together an event of this caliber on short notice, but that he was ready for the opportunity to get the MLRA back to Springfield and wanted to make sure it happened. "Chris and Jan Davis and their group at Midwest Sheet Metal are huge supporters of dirt track racing in our area, and we really appreciate them coming on board as presenting sponsors for this event. With this race not being on our original schedule this year it's taken some work in a short amount of time to make it happen, and we couldn't do it without people like them and Midwest Sheet Metal." - Smith, Reinbold, Paulus score Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown wins at Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 4, 2024) - Wesley Smith of Nixa led all 25 laps to capture the POWRi WAR Sprint League feature victory Saturday night, turning a close battle into a runaway late as he beat Jack Wagner by 2.8 seconds. The victory, at the 13th annual Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown at Lucas Oil Speedway, moved Smith into second place in all-time POWRi WAR wins with 14. Smith is 2-for-2 in 2024, adding to a feature win in the season opener at I-70 Speedway. "I think they put some new dirt on this surface and definitely for the better," Smith said of Lucas Oil Speedway. "It's definitely a little tricky. It's not the smoothest or the fastest surface I've ever raced on, but it's one of the funnest. It seems the WAR Series is putting on some great shows." Smith started up front and led the opening lap as Kory Schudy moved into second before a caution flew on lap two. Wagner, of Lone Jack, moved around Schudy for the second spot two laps after the restart. The order remained that way as the laps ticked by with Smith maintaining a quarter-second lead over Wagner. Those two waged a tremendous battle for the lead as the race reached lap 12 when Wagner couldn't quite pull off a slider for the lead. No matter what Wagner tried, Smith was up to the challenge and he was able to use lapped traffic to expand his lead to close out the wire-to-wire victory. "Man, that was a fun race," Smith said, noting Wagner's near-pass eight eight laps remaining. "I told him after the race 'if you'd have waited one more corner and one more lap, you'd have passed me.'" Schudy, of Battlefield, Mo., finished third with Keith Martin of Cleburne, Texas, coming home in fourth. In other divisions of the Open Wheel Showdown: Reinbold earns first POWRi Midget League victory: Hayden Reinbold of Chandler, Ariz., dominated from start to finish for his first POWRi National and West Midget league career victory. The 20-year-old Reinbold started on the pole and rolled to the lead in a race slowed by only one early caution. He opened a 2.2-second command over Shannon McQueen by lap nine and maintained consistent laps the rest of the way to lead all 15 circuits. McQueen, of Bakersfield, Calif., held off 15-year-old Gunnar Setser of Columbus, Ind., for the runner-up positions. Broc Elliott of California, Mo., finished fourth. "We've been struggling a little bit lately, so we came down here to run POWRi and we had a lot of fun," Reinbold said. "It was a bummer we were rained out last night (at Callaway Raceway) but we were super happy to show that we have some speed. "This place is awesome. The facility is nice," Reinbold said of Lucas Oil Speedway. "I've been here once before and I crashed, but I had a lot of fun (tonight). This place is sick." POWRi Ozark Region 360 Sprints: Miles Paulus overtook Randy Martin with three laps remaining and went on to score his first POWRi Ozark Region 360 Sprint feature victory. Paulus, of Marshall, started fourth and gave chase to Martin most of the way before finally reeling him in and making the decisive pass. Paulus wound up beating sixth-starting Gunner Ramey and Paulus at the checkers. Martin sprinted to the lead from the start as Paulus gave chase and had a one-second lead over Paulus 10 laps into the feature. As the race continued under green, Paulus cut the lead to .090 of a second by lap 16. Paulus completed his march to the front by sliding past Martin in turn two on lap 17 with Ramey, from Sedalia, right behind. Once out in front, Paulus pulled away as Martin, of California, Mo., and Ramey went back-and-forth for second. Paulus finished 3.06 seconds in front of Ramey with Martin settling for third. "Everybody on the side of this car ... I get to stand here and say that I won, but we won as a team," Paulus said. "I'm very grateful for their support. It's a team effort."
