- RON JENKINS MEMORIAL & WIENER NATIONALS HIGHLIGHT MLRA'S LABOR DAY WEENEND
Wheatland, Missouri (August 26, 2024) - With the Labor Day weekend upon us, it brings about an extended weekend for many, and a trifecta of racing action for the Lucas Oil MLRA. Three big nights of racing will be on the docket beginning this Friday night, and thanks to $5,000 in added BONUS MONEY the weekend will now feature two payouts of $10,000 or more. The Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri will get the weekend started on Friday August 30th, with the opening night of the 10th Annual "Ron Jenkins Memorial" presented by Rugged Radios. The two-day affair has become a staple on the MLRA schedule, as it pays tribute to Jenkins who was the original builder of Wheatland Raceway. Tyler Stevens of Paragould, AR scored the weekend openers $5,000 top prize one season ago, marking his his first career win under the MLRA series banner. Action will continue at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" on Saturday night August 31st, with night two of the Ron Jenkins Memorial. The pressure and the stakes will be doubled on Saturday, as $10,000 will be up for grabs to the first to take the checkered flag, with all 24 feature drivers guaranteed $700 just for starting. **$5,000 BONUS MONEY ADDED** In addition to each nights regular MLRA purse, added bonus money will be up for grabs courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt, in memory of Ron Jenkins. A $500 Bonus will be presented each night to the driver with the overall "Fast Time" during MyRacePass qualifying. A $2,000 Bonus will also be awarded to the feature winner both Friday and Saturday night making each night now worth $7,000 and $12,000 to win respectively. The Labor Day trifecta will once again conclude on Sunday night September 1st, with the MLRA's annual trek to the Moberly Motorsports Park in Moberly, MO. The 4th Annual "Wiener Nationals" will take center stage on the 4/10 mile high banked clay oval paying $10,000 to win and $750 to start. Former event winners include, Bobby Pierce, Tony Jackson Jr., and Mike Marlar. A racing event unlike any other, the Wiener Nationals offers fans a full day of fun from appearances by an Elvis Impersonator, Ruby Leigh performing the National Anthem, a hot dog eating contest, and the MLRA's 4 side salute led by the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Proceeds from the event will help raise funds for CARS FOR HEROES, which is a 501C3 charity that provides donated vehicles to disabled Veterans. A vehicle will be given away to a Veteran during the Weiner Nationals Race. By virtue of his 3rd place finish this past Friday at the Lakeside Speedway, four time MLRA champion Chad Simpson was able to open up a slight bit of breathing room in the points battle, as he now holds a 45 point advantage. Brother Chris Simpson has now moved back into the second spot, while Gordy Gundaker slips to third, but still only 65 behind Chad Simpson. Dillon McCowan has moved up into the 4th position ahead of Trevor Gundaker as they sit 105 and 130 points out of the top spot respectively with just 10 races remain in the 2024 season. MLRA TURN 4 NEWS AND NOTES: First Time Winners-- The Ron Jenkins Memorial has a history of producing first time winners. RC Whitwell, current crew chief for Garrett Alberson, grab his one and only MLRA win in the event in 2015. Both Randy Timms (17') and Mason Oberkramer (20') broke through in the Labor Day weekend classic for their first career MLRA wins, while just one year ago Tyler Stevens scored the win in the weekend opener. Wheatland—the key to the 2024 MLRA Championship??—Ten rainouts has made for an ultra-tight championship points battle with ten nights remaining. Four of the series final ten races will be contested at the Lucas Oil Speedway over the next five weeks, making performance at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks critical. Of the top 6 drivers who are separated by only 140 points, only Chad Simpson (4) and Tony Jackson Jr. (3) have MLRA wins here. Throw in Dillon McCowan who has two Lucas Oil Speedway track titles to his credit, and the Gundaker brothers who were the two highest finishing MLRA regulars at this year's Show-Me 100. When it comes to qualifying don't count out Chris Simpson—the only MLRA driver who recorded top 3 qualifying efforts in both nights of the Show-Me and recorded a 4th place finish in the Cowboy Classic. Track Position is King—In the first three years of the Wiener Nationals, the driver who has set the overall MyRacePass "Fast Time" has gone on to win the $10k event. Wiener Nationals, it's anyone's race to win—Chad Simpson is the only driver to have recorded multiple top 5's in the Wiener Nationals with finishes of 4th and 3rd in the past two seasons. The 4/10 mile facility has provided some great racing with 13 different drivers finding themselves with a top five finish since the inaugural even in 2021. - BUSY STRETCH FOR LUCAS OIL MLRA BEGINS AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY & I-70 SPEEDWAY
Wheatland, Missouri (August 20, 2024) - The Lucas Oil MLRA will return to the dirt this weekend with a double header of action surrounding the Kansas City area. This will also mark the first series event since June 7th, where last season's Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year Dillon McCowan scored his first career MLRA victory at the Callaway Raceway. A total of 12 events remains on the 2024 MLRA schedule, with defending series Champion Chad Simpson once again leading the way in a wide open points battle. St Charles, MO driver Gordy Gundaker has shot up to the second spot and is only 10 points out of the championship lead, while two time Lakeside Speedway MLRA winner Chris Simpson trails by only 15 markers. Trevor Gundaker enters the weekend in the fourth position, while McCowan completes the top five, just 90 and 95 points out of the top position respectively. Finishing out the top ten are two time series champion Tony Jackson Jr. (-125), Earl Pearson Jr. (-140), Jeff Herzog (-215), Clayton Stuckey (-270), and Lakeside veteran Aaron Marrant (-290) who will be looking for his first series win at his home track come Friday night. The green flag will drop on Friday night August 23rd with a $5,000 to win visit to the friendly confines of the Lakeside Speedway, in Kansas City, KS. Lakeside is one of the more storied tracks in series history, having hosted a total of 34 MLRA events dating back to the 2000 race season. The MLRA's most recent stop at the 4/10-mile semi-banked oval came back in 2022, in what can be described as a night of drama. Point leader Chad Simpson started scratch on the field and raced up to 6th, while two time series Champion Tony Jackson Jr. started fast by setting quick time and winning his respective heat race, only to have to surrender his pole position prior to the start of the 30 lapper due to mechanical issues. Chase Junghans was able to capitalize, and raced to his second career Lucas Oil MLRA win over Andrew Kosiski, while current Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the Year leader Aaron Marrant score a career best and rounded out the podium in third. The weekend will conclude on Saturday night at the I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO with the Inaugural "K.C. Cup" presented by Mid American Automation Services. Located just east of the KC metro area, Saturday nights showdown will pay $7,000 to win & $700 to start. This will mark just the second stop all-time for the MLRA at the high banked 1/2-mile facility. Hudson O'Neal captured the win in 2022 at I-70 in an event co-sanctioned with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS), while mother nature erased both attempts at an MLRA return in 2023. After sitting idle for many years, I-70 reopened in 2021 following an extensive renovation project which included many updates to the fan experience along with the removal of the asphalt surface and a return to the dirt. I-70 hosted numerous dirt events from 1981 to 1987 during its original dirt track phase, with the likes of KC area veteran Rick Beebe and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Roger Dolan both capturing victories on the high banks in Busch All-Star Tour Series events. - LUCAS OIL MLRA HITS THE TRACK FOR 18TH ANNUAL "DIAMOND NATIONALS"
Wheatland, Missouri (July 9, 2024) - For the first time in over a month, the Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) will roar back to life this weekend with another Crown Jewel opportunity as teams converge upon the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The 18th Annual CMH "Diamond Nationals" Presented by Summit Racing Equipment will take center stage, pairing the best of the MLRA with their counterparts from the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) in this annual co-sanctioned classic. This year's Diamond Nationals will also see an increase from the previous $15,000 top prize, as the winner will now take home $20,000 for their efforts. Jonathan Davenport not only enters the weekend as the defending winner after topping a 40-car field in 2023, but the Blairsville, GA driver is also a 4-time winner of the coveted Diamond Ring which goes to the winner. Other recent winners of note include Johnny Scott in 2022, Chris Ferguson in 2020, and Jimmy Owens in 2019. A total of 13 nights remain on the 2024 Lucas Oil MLRA schedule, and with five of those nights taking place at the Lucas Oil Speedway, the Diamond of Dirt Tracks is likely to play a major role in determining the series championship. Here is the Midseason breakdown of the top ten MLRA drivers heading into this weekend's action. BREAKDOWN: MLRA MID-SEASON TOP 10 1.) CHAD SIMPSON (Point Leader) — The four-time series Champ continues to stand on top of the Midwest Sheet Metal Point Leader Challenge Standings, as he tries to track down a third consecutive crown. Engine troubles plagued Simpson in his last MLRA outing at the Callaway Raceway, but the Mt. Vernon, Iowa driver still managed to nurse his ride home to a valuable 8th place finish, something that could loom large come October. And the fact he has more MLRA wins to date (4) at Lucas Oil Speedway than any other active driver int the top ten, could spell trouble for those trying to take the crown away from the defending champ. 2.) GORDY GUNDAKER (-10 points) — In his first full season with the MLRA, Gundaker has positioned himself well into the Championship Conversation. Despite an 18th place run in the season opener, the former WoO regular has rebounded with a podium run at the Adams County Speedway (IL) followed by another top five at the Callaway Raceway. The big boost for the St. Charles, MO driver came in the Show-Me 100 as he topped the MLRA regulars and wrestled his Longhorn Chassis to a strong 8th place finish. 3.) CHRIS SIMPSON (-15 points) — Yes, this makes three drivers separated by just 15 points. The defending MLRA runner-up continues to hang around stalking the top spot by virtue of his 4 top ten finishes, including a podium at Callaway Raceway. A 16-time career MLRA winner, Simpson is yet to find his way to victory lane at Wheatland, but he was the highest finishing MLRA regular during both qualifying nights for this year's Show-Me 100, proving that he has the speed should he decide to go after what would be his first series championship since winning the 2016 Corn Belt Clash title. 4.) TREVOR GUNDAKER (-90 points) — The runner-up in last season's SUNOCO Rookie of the Year Battle, Gundaker has already doubled up on his top ten finishes from all of last year with the MLRA. The former MLRA winner also had an impressive 11th place finish in the Show-Me 100 that helped him stay well within striking distance of the lead trio of drivers. Adding in another 3 top tens finishes in recent weeks following the Summer Nationals Tour and the 21 year old will be one to keep an eye on down the stretch as long as the MLRA heads to his home track Tri-City Speedway for the finale. 5.) DILLON MCCOWAN (-90 points) — After a rocky start to his MLRA season, the defending Sunoco Rookie of the Year has bounced back as of late, collecting his first career MLRA win at the Callaway Raceway to firmly put him back into the Championship discussion. With 5 races remaining in his playground of the Lucas Oil Speedway, and the fact he quite possibly has more seat time thus far in 2024 than any other MLRA driver, don't take your eyes off this 20-year-old. After finishing no better than 15th in his first 3 MLRA starts of the season, if this team can continue their current string of strong runs it could make for a storybook ending to his sophomore campaign. 6.) TONY JACKSON JR. (-125 points) — The two-time Lucas Oil MLRA Champion started the season with the Championship point lead following a strong 5th place run in the season opener in April. Since then, he has a trio of finishes that come just outside the top ten. After a mid-season break in 2022, the Lebanon, MO driver returned to the track winning 4 of the next 6 MLRA races in his transition to Capital Chassis. As Jackson and company continue to search for more speed, it would not be a surprise to see him once again go on a late summer rampage and close the gap as he looks for MLRA title # 3. 7.) EARL PEARSON JR. (-140 points) — **Hurricane Warning** After failing to make the starting field in the season opener, Pearson looked more like a strong "Category 5" in recent weeks, recording runner-up finishes in the last two regular MLRA events to close in on championship leaders. The 4-time LOLMDS Champion has 4 MLRA wins to his credit, with three of those coming at the Lucas Oil Speedway. 8.) JEFF HERZOG (-215 points) — After recording a trio of top 10's in his first full season a year ago, Herzog is still on the hunt for his first top ten of 2024. Two of those top tens came at tracks the MLRA will visit in the second half of the season in the Davenport Speedway(7th) and Moberly Motorsports Park(6th). Typically one of MLRA's top qualifiers, and a former quick timer at the Lucas Oil Speedway, Herzog looks to be a strong "second half team" that has high potential for making some noise down the stretch. 9.) CLAYTON STUCKEY (-270 points) — The Shreveport, LA driver has been a pleasant addition to the MLRA in 2024. A 12th place run at the Adams County Speedway in May, followed by an MLRA career best 7th place run at the Callaway Raceway has help to vault the Black Diamond race team inside the top ten, and well into contention for a share of the MLRA's $60,000 season ending point fund. 10.) AARON MARRANT (-290 points) — The MLRA's leader in the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year category checks in at the # 10 spot. A large portion of the remaining MLRA schedule sets up nicely for the Richmond, MO driver will stop's close to home at Lakeside Speedway and Moberly Motorsports Park. In his last MLRA stop at Lakeside in 2022, Marrant recorded his best MLRA finish to date with a 3rd place run.
