- EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GOES FROM THE BACK TO SEVENTH IN PERRIS USAC/CRA RACE - VENTURA THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, July 17, 2024) After an early program set back in hot laps, Eddie Tafoya Jr. had an impressive recovery by going from 15th to seventh to capture the "In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award" at last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. This week, the veteran racer will head to the Ventura Raceway for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series event presented by Inland Rigging. Tafoya, who turned 27 a few days before the race, was coming into the night after an eighth-place finish on the same half-mile clay oval three weeks earlier. Bolstering his effort in the pits on the evening was Zac Bozanich. While Tafoya had worked with Bozanich on the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, it was the first time the award-winning crew chief was helping Tafoya with his family-owned #51T. Unfortunately, things did not get off to a good start in hot laps. Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, had a big vibration in the car. Turns out the rear end of his car was letting go. He quickly returned to the pits where the crew swarmed over the machine to get it back on the track. "The first lap of hot laps, I had a real bad vibration coming out of two," Tafoya lamented. "I pulled her back into the pits and figured out the whole rear plate was cracked, the gears were stripped, and it started throwing the lower shaft out of it. At that point, it was kind of a scramble time to try and get the spare one off the wall. Luckily we got that done before the heat races. It put us behind the eight-ball, but we made the best of it." "I trust all the equipment we have," Tafoya continued when asked if that affected his focus for the remainder of the night. "All of our spares are real good. We didn't know that rear end was a thicker wall tubing. So, our bleeders did not work. I was out of luck on the bleeders for the rest of the night. That kind of sucked." While the team did get it changed for the heat races, they could not do it in time for qualifying. Thus, Tafoya had to start at the back of the eight-car field in the second heat race. He moved forward to finish sixth. Then, the personable driver had to start last in the 16-car, 30-lap main event. That is when things turned around. In a main that had more than its share of chaos, Tafoya, who is seldom involved in any of the mayhem, used his track savvy to avoid getting tangled up in any of the wrecks. "When you are starting back there, you kind of pick your battles," Tafoya stated. "You know when to go and when not to go. Luckily, I could see those pileups coming from a mile away. I did my best to stay out of them, and luckily it worked out." "I felt really good," Tafoya said when asked if he thought he had a car that could have been a contender if he started closer to the front. "When Tommy (eventual winner Tommy Malcolm) went by me, I did not really want to mess with him too much. I felt I was not too far off his pace, and the same with AJ (second-place finisher AJ Bender). I feel if we could have been up there closer to the front on the start we could have fought for a podium position. When the checkers ended the race, Tafoya crawled out of the car in seventh place. It was his sixth top 10 finish in nine USAC/CRA starts in 2024. The result also kept him seventh in the series championship standings heading into a busy month of August that will see races on the 10th at Santa Maria, the 17th at Perris and the 31st at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya enjoyed having Bozanich work on the car in the pit area. In his years working with Brody Roa, Bozanich captured the coveted USAC/CRA Crew Chief of the Year Award one season and was the champion crew chief in 2023. Needless to say, Tafoya would not mind working with him again in the future. "We are definitely on the same page when it comes to setup stuff," Tafoya said. "It is easy to work with someone when you are both thinking the same about the car and are not butting heads. It is definitely easier when you are making decisions. It was the first time he helped on the #51T. I try to get as much help as I can whenever I can. So, hopefully, it works out a few more times this year and he can be with us." This Saturday, Tafoya will make the 100-mile track to the Ventura Raceway, which is located on the beach at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, to drive his own #51T car. At the first USCS race at the track on June 1st, he led the field into turn one after the green flag. However, his steering broke, and he slammed into the turn-one wall and tipped over. That left him with a 23rd-place finish. While the June 1st race result at Ventura was not to his liking, Tafoya has done well at the track in the past in USAC/CRA competition. His best showing at Ventura came in May 2022, when he set the fastest qualifying time and finished fifth in the main event. "I feel good," the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year responded when asked about this week's race at the beach. "The time before we ran good, and at Turkey Night (last November) we were winning heat races and qualifiers. So, I definitely feel good going back there on Saturday." Tafoya's best finish in the first four races with the USCS was a second at Santa Maria on June 15th. He enters Saturday's fray fifth in series points. Spectator gates for Saturday's USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. Adult tickets are $22.00. Seniors 60 and over, military with ID, and students with an ID get in for $18.00. Children 12 and under are free when they are accompanied by an adult. The track is located on the Ventura County Fairgrounds at 10 W. Harbor Boulevard (93001). The website is http://venturaraceway.com/, and the office phone number is (805) 648-RACE. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell his beautiful 2024 team shirts. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY WITH THE USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS AT PERRIS
(Chino, CA, July 11, 2024) After a two-week break in his busy racing schedule, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will be back in the gorgeous, family-owned #51T for this weekend's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. The track's 2018 Young Gun Sprint Car Series champion will enter the battleground eighth in USAC/CRA points. The Chino Hills, California resident, who turned 27 on Wednesday, comes into Saturday's Perris race after a busy month of June that saw him compete seven times. Four of the races were in his native California, and three were in Indiana, a hotbed of open-wheel racing. One other race that he was in the "Hoosier State" for was rained out. The likable driver's best June result came in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging main event at the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th when he placed second. That event was sandwiched in between USAC/CRA races at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on June 8th and Perris on the 22nd. He placed fourth at Kern and came from the back to finish eighth at Perris. Earlier in the month of June, Tafoya finished 23rd when something broke in his steering while leading the field into turn one at the USCS race at Ventura on the 1st. He then jetted to Indiana and finished eighth in the A main at the Lawrenceburg Speedway on the fifth and 12th at the Lincoln Park Speedway 24 hours later. He wrapped up his Indiana journey with a sixth-place finish in the B main at Bloomington on the seventh before flying back to California for the Kern race 24 hours later. Unlike June, when Tafoya originally had eight race dates on his schedule, there are only two scheduled thus far in July. The first is this Saturday's USAC/CRA affair at Perris. He will follow that up when the USCS returns to Ventura on the 20th. If you are coming to Saturday's race, be sure to stop by Eddie's pit and wish him a belated Happy Birthday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. at Perris on Saturday, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1366778 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. - FLOWDYNAMICS SPRINT CAR TEAM RACING ON ITS HOME TURF, PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY, THIS SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, July 10, 2024) The Flowdynamics Racing Team, consisting of Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams, gets back in action this Saturday, July 13th, when the West Coast's premiere traditional sprint car series, the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, returns to famous Perris Auto Speedway. It will be race #10 of 23 on the 20-year-old association's schedule. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, was in action last Saturday night when the series made its first stop at Santa Maria Speedway since August 6, 2022. The race was the third on the 60-year-old 1/3 mile banked clay oval since the middle of last month. A tough field of 26 cars and a large, enthusiastic crowd showed up for a night of exciting 410 sprint car racing. Williams kicked off his night by recording the 11th fastest time in the talent-laden field with a lap of 14.061. That put him on the inside of the second row in his 10-lap heat race, where he was matched up against eight other drivers, including his two older siblings. The 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year flew into the lead on the back straight on lap three and went on to score his initial heat victory of the year by more than a full straightaway. At the first USAC/CRA main event at Santa Maria in 703 days, Williams was coming from the 11th spot in his handsome #5W Flowdynamics sprint car. It was a technical "Cowboy Up" track that was capable of biting at any time. Williams kept his nose clean, stayed out of trouble, and came home in the eighth position. The result saw Williams record his eighth top-ten finish in nine starts in 2024. In what has been his breakout season, he remains in fourth place in the championship standings, only eight points in arrears to his older brother Austin, who sits third. Additionally, entering Saturday's race, he is only 45 markers out of first. For McCarthy, who thus far has confined his racing to Perris this year, Saturday will be his sixth start of the season. He has been fast every night and has won heat races on three of the five appearances. However, he has been the victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time later in the shows. His best finish of 2024 came on April 27th when he started 14th and drove forward to finish sixth in the main event. While he is not concerned with points this season, he goes into Saturday's race 18th in the standings. Williams is not the only one in the Flowdynamics team in contention for a championship. Car owners John and Tammy McCarthy are currently third in owner points. Like Williams, they are only 45 points out of first place. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is https://santamariaspeedway.net/. Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign your autographs, and each of them will have their fine-looking team shirts available. If you or your company would like to be a part of one of the West Coast's most prominent sprint car teams in the 2024 season, please contact John McCarthy at 909 930-5522 or mailto:john@flodyinc.com. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. STARTS THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS OF RACING SATURDAY NIGHT AT SANTA MARIA
(Chino, CA, July 4, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. begins three straight Saturday nights of racing when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its first of three 2024 appearances at the newly rejuvenated Santa Maria Speedway this Saturday, July 6th. One week later, on July 13th, he will contest the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway and will close the month when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, visits the Ventura Raceway on July 20th. Tafoya, who will turn 27 next Wednesday, will be making his 21st start of the season on Saturday. As of late, the friendly racer has been steadily climbing higher on the USAC/CRA Series championship point ladder. The Chino Hills, California resident enters Saturday's fray on the 1/3 mile banked clay oval eighth in the standings. He is a mere 10 points out of seventh and less than 90 points behind the third-place driver. Advancing so high in the standings comes after a wild start to the season when he seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the first three USAC/CRA races of the year, Tafoya finished 21st, 16th and 12th. The main event finishing average of those three races was 16.33. In the last five races, he has a fourth, a sixth, two eight-place results, and a ninth. His average finish in the last five is 7.00. His overall average for all eight USAC/CRA races this year is 10.37. The average for the last five races and for all eight races on the schedule would more than likely have been lower had the last series race on June 22nd not been stopped 10 laps early. Series officials red-flagged the event due to dusty conditions. In that race, Tafoya had to restart at the back after a tangle on lap 16. In just four laps, he raced all the way up to eighth. Had the race run its 30-lap duration; in all likelihood, he would have passed more cars. In going to Santa Maria on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the site of his best finish of the year. On June 15th, he placed second in the USCS main event at the 60-year-old facility. In addition to it being his best finish of the year, it was also his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. The result came at the first race at the track since 2022. The surface that night was a tire eater. However, this will be the track's second race since then, and teams are looking for improved track conditions on Saturday. - FOURTH IN POINTS, LOGAN WILLIAMS GOES TO THE SANTA MARIA RACEWAY ON SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, July 3, 2024) Enjoying the best season of his career, Logan Williams will be behind the wheel of the Flowdynamics #5W when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes its first appearance at the Santa Maria Speedway since 2022 this Saturday, July 6th. Spectator gates at the newly reopened 1/3 mile banked clay oval will open at 4:00 p.m., qualifying will start at 5:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 6:00. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, has performed well in his last two outings at Santa Maria. On July 3, 2021, he placed eighth in the main. At the last USAC/CRA race at the track on August 6, 2022, he finished the 30-lapper in fourth place. The 2013 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, Williams has been one of the most consistent drivers in the USAC/CRA Series this season. He has seven top-10s and four top-five finishes in the first eight races. The only night he placed out of the top 10 came at Perris when driveline issues sent him off the track early in the going on April 27th. He ended up 22nd on that night. Entering this Saturday's race, he is fourth in the series championship point standings, and he is only five points out of third. At the series last race at Perris on June 22nd, Williams and teammate Matt McCarthy, who lives in Riverside, California, had flashes of brilliance on what turned out to be a strange race. On a hot, windy night, Williams turned in the seventh fastest time of the 22 cars on hand during qualifying when he toured the half-mile oval with a lap of 17.651. McCarthy's 17.950 was the 13th fastest on the night. The times in qualifying ensured the teammates that they would be starting in the same heat race. In fact, they were starting nose to tail in the first heat. McCarthy was on the outside of row one and Williams was directly behind him. They finished next to each other for the second Perris heat in a row. At the Salute to Indy in May, McCarthy was second, and Williams was third when they were matched up in the same heat. This time, it was McCarthy for the win with Williams second. It was his third heat race win in five starts in 2024 for McCarthy, who makes his home in Riverside, California. The main turned into one of the most bizarre races in the 28-season history of Perris Auto Speedway. Afternoon temperatures surpassed the century mark. To throw another wrench into the situation, Mother Nature was supplying wind. Normally when there is wind at Perris, it lays down late in the afternoon. On this occasion, the wind did not stop, and the temperature was 80 degrees when the main bumped off. Williams started the 30-lap main in seventh, with McCarthy coming from 13th. Due to the heat and wind, the track quickly became very dusty, hindering the driver's visibility. McCarthy was involved in a skirmish with three other cars on lap 16, ending his night with an 18th-place finish. Williams' night ended on lap 20 when series officials threw the red flag and ended the race due to the dusty conditions. By that time, Williams had advanced his position to fourth. That gave him three straight top fours, including a second at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on June 8th. Adult tickets are $25.00 for Saturday's race at Santa Maria. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. COMES FROM THE BACK TO FINISH EIGHTH IN SHORTENED PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY MAIN
(Chino, CA, June 27, 2024) In what can best be described as a bizarre night, Eddie Tafoya Jr. came from the back of the pack to finish eighth in last Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. The race was called complete at the end of 20 laps leaving fans to wonder where he would have finished if it had gone the full 30-circuits. Tafoya, who was racing at the track closest to his Chino Hills, California home, was the 10th fastest car of the 22 on hand in qualifying. The quickest of his two laps on the clocks was a 17.848. The time sent the affable racer to the first heat race on the hot evening. Starting on the inside of row two in the 10-lapper, he placed fifth. During the afternoon, the thermometer was registering at over 100 degrees at the 28 year old track. In addition, the wind was blowing. By the time the eighth series 30-lap main event of 2024 was ready to push off, the wind was still blowing, and the temperature was 80 degrees. When the 22-car field of 900+ horsepower cars began the race, a problem that rarely exists at the track reared its ugly head. That problem was copious amounts of dust. Early on, veteran racer Tafoya, who started the main event in 10th, got caught up in somebody else's mess. After a quick trip to the work area, he returned to the battleground but had to restart the race at the back. While the dust had settled during the yellow flag period, it came up again as soon as the race resumed. Despite issues seeing, Tafoya managed to steer the car, which is a fan favorite with its red foil trim, forward. He was one of the few cars making passes, and he found himself impressively back up to eighth spot. However, that was as far as he was going to get. As conditions were not improving, series officials called the race complete at 20-laps. While it would have been interesting to see where 26-year-old Tafoya would have finished had the race not been shortened, it was an impressive performance in less-than-ideal conditions. It also gave him six top 10 finishes in the last 10 Southern California A mains he has started. Included in the top 10s is a second place at the grand reopening of the Santa Maria Speedway on June 15th. Saturday's finish saw Tafoya close to within 10-points of the driver currently ranked seventh in the championship standings. With more than half the season remaining, the 2019 series Rookie of the Year will surely rise higher in the point battle before the season ends. Tafoya gets this weekend off, but he will be back at it on July 5th when the USAC/CRA Series heads to Santa Maria for the first time since 2022. - FAST FLOWDYNAMICS TEAM READY FOR USAC/CRA RACE AT PERRIS ON SATURDAY
(Ontario, CA, June 20, 2024) The Flowdynamics Racing Team will jump back into action with both feet on Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits its home track, Perris Auto Speedway. The team will be packing a one-two punch with drivers Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams, who is currently the hottest driver in the series. Spectator gates for the night of exciting 410 sprint car racing will open at 5:00 PM, and the first race will take the Steve Russell Green flag at 7:00. Saturday's race will be the fifth of the season for McCarthy, who lives in Riverside, California. Thus far, the 2017 series Rookie of the Year has confined his racing this season to Perris. He has been fast in all four outings. At the season opener, he qualified seventh quickest, but a broken steering box in his heat put the kibosh on the remainder of his night. One month later, he only qualified 13th fastest but won his heat and went from starting 13th to finishing 10th in the main. In the April race, he ended up 13th in qualifying, took the win in his heat, and went from 14th to sixth in the 30-lap main. Had the race been more laps, he was fast enough that he would have finished in the top five. At last month's Salute to Indy, he timed in second fastest at 16.492. That was the 11th-best qualifying lap of all USAC/CRA drivers at the famous track in 2024. However, after placing second in his heat, bad luck reared its ugly head and knocked him out of the main halfway through the race. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, has been a pleasant surprise for the series fans in 2024. He has six top-10 finishes and three top-fives in seven starts this year. The only time he has not finished in the top ten was on April 27th, when drivetrain issues forced him out of the race. Williams has starred big time in the series' last two races. At the famous salute to Indy on Memorial Day Weekend, he led more laps than anybody when he kept the #5W in front of the thundering herd for 17 circuits at Perris. A couple of weeks later, he journeyed to the Kevin Harvick Kern Raceway for the first time in his career. After qualifying ninth, he placed fifth in his heat race. For the main on the 1/3 mile oval, which is located in Bakersfield, California, he started 9th and drove all the way to second for his best finish of 2024. The recent prowess of the 2013 PAS Young Gun Sprint Car Series champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year indicates that his first USAC/CRA Series win is just around the corner. "It is finally here, I would say," he responded when asked if his performance this year has surprised him. "I feel like we have been the best car that's done the worst. We have been fast enough to be in the top three but it just hasn't happened for us for whatever reason. My confidence as a driver is 100% but a lot has to do with the new things we have done that have been working on the car." Coming into Saturday's race at the track where he grew up watching his Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, and his two older brothers, Cody and Austin race, Williams finds himself fourth in series points. That is the highest ranking of the three racing siblings. However, he is not concerned with racking up points. "I just want to win races," he firmly stated. "I am not thinking about points. When I go out there I am trying to win and take care of the car. We cannot afford to crash on stupid stuff. Mostly I am just trying to think about the win." "Yeah, maybe a little bit, but I just want my first win," he responded when asked if the winning races over championships mindset came from his father, who had over 100 main event victories. "Obviously, if a championship came before a win, I wouldn't be mad about it, but I would much rather have a win." "Believe it or not, we have never really had a good battle," he continued when asked about racing with older brothers Cody and Austin. "I have never had a battle with either of them. Either one of them is much faster, and they pass me, or I pass them back real quick. We have never had like a slide job battle where I pass them or they pass me and then there is a slide job pass back in the next corner. We never have had that true battle, but it did feel good passing Austin. That is for sure." If you would like to see the two personable drivers in action this Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway, the spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM, and the first race will begin at 7:00. Adult tickets for the race at one of the country's premier clay ovals are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6 to 12, it is only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. GETS SEASON-BEST 2ND PLACE FINISH LAST SATURDAY - ON TO PERRIS THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, June 19, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. notched his best finish of the 2024 season when he placed second last Saturday night in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series main event presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. The result gave the veteran racer six top-10 finishes in his last nine Southern California starts. This Saturday night, Tafoya will take his driving talents to Perris Auto Speedway for the next round of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. Last Saturday's well-attended race was the grand reopening of the famous Santa Maria Speedway, which began operation in 1964. Since 2021, the track only hosted one race and that was in August of 2022. Needless to say, the race was highly anticipated by the fans and all the racers, including Chino Hills, California-based Tafoya. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T sprint car; he qualified second fastest in his group on a track surface that proved to be a tire eater, with a 14.434. That was good for the seventh best of the 25 cars on hand. In the main, the soon-to-be 27-year-old started in the ninth position. The track was still tough on tires and to succeed, drivers were going to have to manage them. Tafoya did just that. By the time the race ended, he had his best finish of 2024 and his best-ever finish at Santa Maria. "You had to make sure, especially in the second half of the race, that you were not blowing off the tires," Tafoya said. "You had to stay patient. I kind of waited for things to come my way and took my opportunities when I had to. It's good to finally have a night where everything goes our way and to put a good run in the books." "The track was pretty tough," Tafoya continued. "It started taking rubber early in the night. A couple times they reworked it but it seemed to go back to what it was pretty quick. Our setup was kind of staying the same all night. We were just watching the track. We were quick in qualifying and that helped us out in the heat race. In the main event, we stayed patient, saved our tires, and passed a lot of cars." Tafoya will return to Santa Maria with the USAC/CRA Series on July 5th and 6th. One of the differences those two nights will be Tafoya driving his family owned #51T. "Definitely driving two of the same chassis (DRC), no matter what motor I am running, helps out a lot," Tafoya said about set up for the next race at the track. "So, it has been pretty simple lately." This Saturday, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year is focusing on qualifying. It has not been where he would like it, and he is set on improving. In the four races of Perris this year, he has qualified 10th, 14th, 12th, and 8th. That can be a big hindrance with other cars starting in front of him in the main events. "I just really, really need to focus on qualifying," he said. "That really hurts me later in the night. For me, it is almost trying to drive too hard. Trying to get a good lap time. Maybe for me, tone it down a little bit on Saturday night. Just need everything right, hit everything smooth, and make sure I am carrying my speed." In points chases, Tafoya's second place finish last Saturday saw him jump from eight to fifth in the USCS standings. Tafoya will enter the fray eighth in the standings this Saturday at Perris. He is only 12 points out of seventh and only 65 out of fourth. For fans who want to see the talented Tafoya in action on Saturday, spectator gates at Perris Auto Speedway will open at 5:00 PM in the first race will be at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available at the following website or by calling one eight hundred 595-4849. For fans who do not wish to buy tickets in advance, plenty of tickets will be available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday night. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the city of Perris. - IN THE THICK OF THE USAC/CRA CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT, AJ BENDER HEADS TO PERRIS SATURDAY
(Perris, CA, June 20, 2024) The saying "Good things come to those who wait" seems to apply to AJ Bender's season in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The San Diego, California resident not only won his first series event at Perris Auto Speedway on April 27th, but he also finds himself locked in a tight, early-season point battle for the USAC/CRA championship. Bender should be no stranger to longtime Southern California racing fans. After moving from Texas with his family when he was five or six years old, he and older brother Bobby eventually became regulars in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series. Both made big impressions as fast, very capable drivers and in 2008, AJ won the CLS Rookie of the Year award. After a few years in the CLS, Bender transitioned into the tough world of USAC/CRA 410 sprint car racing. He also had planned on competing in the newly created Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car Series (now known as the GAS Chassis Young Gun Series) when it debuted in 2013. At the time, the Young Guns series was for drivers 14-21 with no prior sprint car experience. Since he fell within the age range, he was also allowed to run with the Young Guns. That is, he was allowed to compete with the Young Guns in one race. At the 2013 season opener, Bender put such a whipping on the Young Guns field that a new rule was introduced. While there was no official name for the rule, it quickly became known as the "Bender Rule." That was due to how badly he whipped the competition. From that day forward, drivers with USAC/CRA experience were no longer eligible to compete in the Young Gun Series. That rule still stands today. "Yeah, I know about the rule," Bender laughed when reminded. "I was very bummed about the rule. It is hard to believe that was 11 years ago. In the seasons since his only Young Guns win, Bender, now 31, has honed his skill and has become a talented driver. While the majority of his racing has been confined to Perris, he has proved to be very adaptable at any track he competes on. His thrilling win in the sprint car portion at the 2021 Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway put the fans on their feet at the end of the race. Over the last few years, he has also scored wins with the occasional ride in a lightning sprint car. The most recent one of those came while driving for Northern California's Brian Fonseca at the Ventura Raceway on May 11th. Any victory is nice, but one that eluded Bender was a win in the USAC/CRA Series. Considered the premiere traditional sprint car series west of the Mississippi, wins with the group are not easy to come by. Bender was aware of that, and despite a couple of heartbreaks, he never quit trying. He had not picked up a win through his first 118 starts in the West Coast group. That all changed on Saturday, April 27th, at Perris. Bender was not having a spectacular season through the year's first four races. All told, he had one top 10 finish. That came at the Cocopah Speedway on March 23rd when he placed fifth. In the other four races, he was 12th and 16th at Perris and 15th at the Mohave Valley Raceway. At the race on April 27th, he qualified ninth fastest and won his 10-lap heat race. That placed him on the pole for the main. Over the years, the pole at Perris has not produced a lot of winners. This night it would be different. In one of the best races at the track in recent years, Bender, driving the #21 DRC powered by a Shaver Engine and owned by his mom and dad, jumped into the lead, and set the pace for the first three circuits. The 30 lapper had seven lead changes, and Bender was engaged in every one of them. Performing flawlessly on the track's famous cushion, he reclaimed the lead for two laps on lap 11. He then led laps 14 through 19 and finally 21 through 30. Unlike many drivers who luck into their first win, this victory was anything but that. It was a hard-fought-for, well-earned triumph. "Absolutely, the feeling was through the roof," Bender exclaimed of his first USAC/CRA win. "A feeling of what I have been trying for has finally been accomplished. But I told my dad when we left for home that night to forget it and go on to the next one. We have a long season ahead of us." "Maybe when I was younger, not that I did not care, but I did not take the time to learn this stuff," the driver continued. "We have been with the CRA for a long time but we really never ran a full schedule. We pretty much only ran Perris. I feel like in the past four or five years I have done my homework. You know, taking the time to learn about the car and what I am feeling and what can make me go faster. I feel like a lot of my progression has been in the last four or five years. Kind of leading up to it (the first CRA win). I feel a lot of the time I have been close and I have had good cars. But it is racing and stuff happens." That win lit a fire under Bender. There have been two races since. The annual Salute to Indy at Perris on May 25th and the Golden Empire Clash at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway two weeks ago. The Dallas, Texas-born racer finished fifth and third in those races, respectively. The results have thrown him into the middle of a red hot championship race. The top six drivers are only 84 points apart. Bender is in the middle of the mix in third and is only seven points out of second. "That alone is really cool," he enthusiastically answered when asked how it felt being in third place. "Outside of when I ran the midget two years ago for a full season, I have never run a full season in a series in my racing career. This was kind of like a cool opportunity. This year, my dad said, 'let's try to run the full season.' I have always felt like I could be a good points racer because I feel like I am pretty consistent. On bad nights I try to come away with something out of it. It (being in the points race) makes me feel a little more confident and solidifies that I can do this. It is still a long season. Anything can happen. I try not to think about it too much, but it is hard not to think about it. It is cool to see your name on the stuff that they post." Not only is Bender in the thick of the points race but his mom and dad are as well. In the car owner points, they are second, only seven points back of the leader. "That is pretty cool," he responded about his parent's lofty position in the owner points. "Especially since they (USAC/CRA) are offering money and stuff for the entrants." Bender was responding from his parent's garage while working on the racecar for this Saturday's event at Perris. The friendly driver tries to work on the car a couple of days a week. It is hard to be there every night as he, his wife Tiffany, and daughter Reagan, who will soon turn five, live near downtown San Diego. The car is 45 minutes to an hour away in Ramona. Family time with his wife and daughter is a big priority. Between the family, work, and living quite a distance from most of his competitors, he does not spend a lot of time with them. "We don't hang out outside of racing, but we are all pretty cordial to each other," Bender said of his relationship with the other drivers. "That is nice. If they ask me something, I would not tell them a lie. I would tell them what is going on. It is kind of cool to be doing that with people you consider to be your friends. The racing community is kind of like your family. It is kind of nice not to have grudges or really dislike somebody. But at the same time, I wouldn't give them an inch." To see if AJ Bender can pick up his second win of the year at Perris on Saturday, the fun begins when the gates open at 5:00 p.m. The night's first race will start at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For seniors 65 and over, it is $25.00. Kids 6 to 12 get in for only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available 24 hours a day online at the following website https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1366776 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. - BUSY RACER EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HEADS TO SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, June 13, 2024) Coming after his busiest week of the 2024 season, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will return to action this Saturday night, June 15th, with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Santa Maria Speedway. It will be the first race at the track in nearly two years. At the track's last race on August 6th, 2022, Tafoya finished eighth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA main event. Tafoya, who calls Chino Hills, California home, got off to an inauspicious start to the 2024 campaign. It was not of his own doing, he just seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Finally, his fortune has changed. He enters this Saturday's event coming off his most impressive race of the year when he came from seventh on the start to place fourth in the main last Saturday in the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. The exciting result came after he qualified fourth fastest and placed seventh in his heat. The inspiring night at Kern saw Tafoya record his fourth straight USAC/CRA Series top-10 finish. It also allowed him to climb higher in the championship point standings. He is now ranked eighth and is only 52 points out of fifth. "Yeah, for sure, we just have to keep doing what we are doing," Tafoya said after his best finish of 2024. "We have to make sure we can do everything on our part. A lot of the stuff that has been going on this year has been out of our hands. We cannot get down on ourselves. We have just got to keep plugging and keep trying. Things have been going better, and I think we are definitely headed in the right direction." "It is definitely a lot of work to show up and only get three laps in like we have at a lot of races this year," the friendly driver said when asked about the frustration of being taken out at races. "Like I said, we just have to keep plugging away and keep trying. Last weekend, we were really close. It gets the juices back flowing." Tafoya is also eighth in the USCS standings going into this week's historic, grand re-opening race at Santa Maria. Besides his eighth-place result two years ago. His other post-Covid finish at the track was a sixth on July 3rd, 2021. "I really have no idea," Tafoya commented on what he expected Saturday's track to be like. "We have been away from there for so long. Usually, that track is pretty unpredictable in the first place. We will have to see when we get there, I guess. I really do not have a lot of experience there. So, it is hard for me to really like it or dislike it. I am just happy to go racing anywhere." After racing at Bloomington, Indiana, on the seventh, Tafoya had to fly back to So Cal in the morning to race last Saturday at Kern. He was in the "Hoosier State" to contest four nights of sprint car racing on the same card as USAC's Indiana Midget Week. Unfortunately, the first race at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis was rained out on June 4th. Twenty-four hours later, on Wednesday the 5th, Tafoya and the team journeyed south to the Lawrenceburg Speedway. On a track that had been reconfigured since he was last there, Tafoya set the fastest lap in qualifying at 14.632. Later that night, he started 12th in the main event and drove forward to finish eighth. On Thursday, June 6th, Tafoya headed to the Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Indiana. A seventh-place finish in his heat saw him relegated to the B Main, where he started fifth and ended up second. That secured his ticket into the A Main event, where he started 19th and moved all the way up to the 12th place spot before the Checkers ended the race. At his last race in the Midwest, the 26-year-old placed eighth in his heat at Bloomington. That again saw him head to the B Main. He started 15th and passed 9 cars in just 12 laps to finish 6th. However, that left him just shy of a transfer to the A Main before heading to the airport. The gates for Saturday's grand reopening of Santa Maria Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will be at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo. - BRODY ROA IS READY TO RETURN TO HIS BEST TRACK THIS SATURDAY
(Cypress, CA, June 12, 2024) This Saturday night, June 15th, many California race fans will see something they fretted would never happen: the grand reopening of the popular Santa Maria Speedway. Like race fans, the drivers are also elated about the rebirth of the Central Coast banked oval. None of them will be more excited than Brody Roa, who will be competing in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Dating back to the start of the 2017 season, the pleasant Garden Grove, California racer has started eight races on the track that is located within San Luis Obispo County. Amazingly, Roa finished in the top three seven times! Among those were four wins, a second-place finish, and a third. The only time he did not finish in the top three at Santa Maria over that period of time came in a 2019 race when he finished 16th. His main event finishing average at the track is 3.50 since 2017. Take away the 16th-place finish, and the average would have been an astounding 1.71. Between Covid in 2020 and the track being shuttered in 2021, Roa has only competed at Santa Maria two times since 2019. On July 3rd, 2021, he finished third in the main. The last time the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars raced at the track was in August of 2022. To say the least, it was a memorable night. First of all, it was the first night the track had been open since shutting down a year earlier. It was also the final event at the track before this coming weekend's race. A sellout crowd was on hand, and they witnessed Roa pull off a rare USAC/CRA feat. He steered Jayson May's 360-powered car to win the main event against a full field of 410s. Unfortunately, the track that opened in 1964, was shuttered again after that. That all changes this Saturday. Last week, when the USAC/CRA Series was at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway for the Golden Empire Clash, Roa set the fifth-fastest time in qualifying. That placed him on the outside of the second row for his 10-lap heat. The 2023 series champion stayed second for the race's first seven laps. Entering turn three on the eighth circuit, he used a textbook slider that propelled him into the lead and onto the victory. Combined with his race win in the USCS event on the 1/3 mile oval at the start of May, Roa has won heat races each time he has been at the track this year. Things were looking like Roa was going to have a great night. After winning the heat, he started inside row two for the 30-lap main. Early on, he was running third. However, engine problems started to slow the gorgeous #8M. On lap 18, Roa decided to call it a night. Afterward, he stated, "I didn't want to jeopardize hurting anyone." To see if Roa can make it three wins in four USCS starts, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Santa Maria. Qualifying will begin at 5:00, and the first race will be at 6:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. Seniors and military get in for $23.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo, California. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - LOGAN WILLIAMS HEADS TO KEVIN HARVICK'S KERN COUNTY RACEWAY AFTER IMPRESSIVE SALUTE TO INDY
(Ontario, CA, June 7, 2024) One thing the big dogs in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series do not need is another competitor to challenge their supremacy. In the case of third generation driver Logan Williams, that is just what he is doing. After an impressive fourth place finish in the Salute to Indy at Perris two weeks ago, the Yorba Linda, California driver will make his inaugural appearance at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in the Golden Empire Clash this Saturday night. Through the first four races of the 2024 campaign, Williams finished in the top 10 each time. That kept him in the top 5 in series points until the April 27th race when drive train issues sent him to the pit area early with the 22nd place finish. Pushing that setback aside, the youngest of the three racing Williams brothers went on a tear at the Salute to Indy. The race turned out to be what was arguably the best of his young career. In the latest edition of the prestigious race, a race his Hall of Fame father, Rip Williams, earned his first ever sprint car win at in 1983, and that his older brothers have subsequently won, Williams led most of the way in the event at Perris Auto Speedway on May 25th before eventually finishing fourth. After qualifying fifth fastest on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval, Williams placed third in his 10-lap heat race. For the main, he started on the outside of the front row. He rocketed into the lead on the fourth circuit and set the pace for the next 17 laps. That may sound simple, but it was nothing like that. He was challenged hard and fought tooth and nail with some of the best traditional sprint car drivers California and Arizona have to offer. In the end, he slipped back to fourth and stated that the finish was "hard to swallow." Williams' time of 18.387 was the fastest lap of any driver in the 30-lapper. The finish was Williams' best of the 2024 campaign and goes along with a fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 22nd. It also pushed him into a tie for fifth with his brother Austin in the USAC/CRA championship standings. In an interesting scenario, while they are tied for fifth, their older sibling, Cody, is one position behind. Williams will be flying solo for the Flowdynamics team on Saturday at Kern. Riverside, California's Matt McCarthy will rejoin teammate Williams when the series returns to Perris on June 22nd. McCarthy gave the Flowdynamics team a tough, one-two punch on the night at the Salute to Indy. In his best qualifying effort of the season, the father of two sizzled the track with a lap of 16.492. That was the second fastest time of the night. In the heat race, which pitted McCarthy and Williams against each other, McCarthy came from sixth to finish second, one spot ahead of his Flowdynamics partner. In a rarity, the two teammates had the fastest laps in the race, turning in identical 17.388 times. McCarthy did it on lap 10, and Williams did it four laps earlier on the sixth go-around. McCarthy's prowess in both qualifying and the heat placed him in the fifth starting spot for the main. The friendly driver was fast over the first two laps, but a tangle with another car in turn one on lap three brought out the race's first yellow flag. A quick trip to the work area and the pretty #28M was back on the track for the restart. Unfortunately, McCarthy's time on the track did not last long. He slowed and pulled to a stop on lap 15 and retired for the night. Officially, he ended up 12th. Even though he is not racing for points in 2024 and has only contested the four races at Perris thus far, McCarthy is tied for 18th in the USAC/CRA standings. Adult tickets for Saturday's Kern race are $25.00. Juniors 6-12 get in for $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard, Interstate 5, and S Enos Lane in Bakersfield. The website is https://www.kernraceway.com/ and the office phone is (661) 835-1264. - BRODY ROA SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE GOLDEN EMPIRE CLASH THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Cypress, CA, June 5, 2024) Fresh off a relaxing vacation with his wife and daughters at the river, Brody Roa returns to action this Saturday night when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes an appearance at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway for the Golden Empire Clash. It will be Roa's first USAC/CRA appearance at the track since a win on April 29, 2023. The grandstands will open at 5:00 PM, hot laps will start at 6:00, and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Refreshed after the family vacation, Roa will be back in Jayson May's #8M sprint car. Two weeks ago, he steered the same car from a 9th place starting position to a podium finish when he took third at Perris Auto Speedway. Roa and May have already been to the track located adjacent to Interstate 5 one time this year. That came one month ago when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, visited the track for the first time. Fresh off a win in the inaugural USCS race across town at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks prior, Roa qualified 10th fastest on the night and won his heat race from the second row. That established him as one of the favorites for the main event. However, before the main, Mother Nature attacked the track with two heavy rain showers that forced cancelation of the 30-lapper. Dating back to 2021, Roa has been to Kern eight times. His busiest year at the track came in 2021 when he appeared there four times. Of the four, he won two open comp races and finished second and seventh in a pair of USAC/CRA shows. That should have been three wins and a second. He had a commanding lead in the first USAC/CRA race with five laps to go. However, the main featured a plethora of yellow flags, and that bit Roa when he ran out of fuel. He had to restart at the back and clawed his way forward to seventh in the final five laps. The veteran Garden Grove, California driver only made one appearance at the track in 2022. That was for a USAC West Coast 360 race, where he finished 17th. Like earlier this season, in 2023, Roa's first appearance at the track was wiped out by rain. He then came back at the end of April for the fourth win of his USAC/CRA championship season. Saturday will be Roa's ninth race of 2024. So far, he has recorded two wins, a third, a fourth, and an eighth. On two occasions, he did not start the main. At Cocopah on March 23rd, a broken drive shaft before his heat race knocked him out for the night. A couple of weeks later, when he was making his seasonal debut for May at the Mohave Valley Raceway, his steering wheel came off while qualifying. That sent him hard into the tractor tires that keep cars from entering the pits ending his night. The other race was the aforementioned rainout at Kern last month. After this week's race at Kern, Roa has a date with the USCS at one of his best tracks, the Santa Maria Speedway. It will be the grand reopening of the track that first began operation 60 years ago in 1964. One week later, it will be on to the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $25.00. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. (Chino, CA, June 4, 2024) A few hours after tangling with the wall at the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. was at Los Angeles International Airport and hopping on a flight for this week's Indiana Midget Week. Tuesday through Friday, the talented driver was slated to contest the sprint car portions of the four shows before returning to California Saturday morning for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Series race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. Tafoya's trip to the Midwest was slated to kick off tonight, June 4th, at the Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, rain washed out the event. So, on Wednesday, Tafoya and his crew will head 90 miles southeast to the new surface at the Lawrenceburg Speedway. Thursday will feature a longer drive to Putnamville's Lincoln Park Speedway, which is 140 miles northwest. Friday's journey from Putnamville to Bloomington Speedway will be a mere 40 miles. While Tafoya is based in Chino Hills, California, he is no stranger to the three Indiana tracks he will be competing on this week. Since 2021, he has raced three times at Lawrenceburg, two times at Bloomington, and two times at Lincoln Park. Last year, during the grueling and highly competitive Indiana Sprint Week, Tafoya sat in the main events at Lincoln Park and Bloomington, finishing 18th and 19th, respectively. After the race at Bloomington, Tafoya will embark on the longest portion of the trip. He will fly 2000 miles from Indianapolis to Los Angeles. Once he lands in L.A., he will hop into a car and make the 113-mile drive to Bakersfield for the USAC/CRA race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on Saturday night. Last Saturday, while Tafoya was racing in the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17F at Ventura, his father, Eddie Sr., who was the 2016 Perris Auto Speedway Senior Sprint Car Champion, was hauling the family-owned #51T car to Indiana for this week's races. At last week's USCS race in Ventura, Tafoya, 26, started in the fifth spot and finished fourth in the third heat race. That put him on the pole for the 30-lap main event. On the first two tries to start the main event, Tafoya raced into the lead. However, the first time the race began, it was red-flagged due to a crash in turn one. The second time the green flag signaled the start of the action, cars got together just past the start-finish line, resulting in a yellow flag. On the third try to get the race underway, Tafoya again was the first car across the starting line. However, when he got to the first corner, something in his steering broke, and he became a passenger. He slid across the track, got into the wall, and tipped over. He was not injured, but the car was done for the night. - TAFOYA JUMPS TWO SPOTS IN USAC/CRA STANDINGS - HEADS TO VENTURA FOR USCS RACE SATURDAY
(Chino, CA, May 30, 2024) Shaking off the disappointment of getting clobbered from behind on the first lap and suffering a flat tire the previous week, Eddie Tafoya Jr. finished eighth last Saturday night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway. The finish allowed the likable driver to climb from 10th to eighth in the series championship standings. This Saturday, he will be competing with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, presented by Inland Rigging, at the Ventura Raceway. For Tafoya, who finished third in the USAC/CRA standings in 2022, things started off on the right foot at Perris. He was the seventh fastest driver on the premises in hot laps. Not long thereafter, he set the eighth-fastest time in qualifying with a lap of 16.922. That placed the Chino Hills, California resident on the outside of row two in the second heat race on the 28-year-old half-mile oval. After the support divisions completed their preliminary races, the USAC/CRA cars and stars rolled onto the track for their heats. Tafoya, who will be 27 in a little over a month, scored an impressive win in the second 10-lapper of the night. His best lap in the heat was 17.571. While that was only the third-fastest time in the race, it was still an impressive performance in his first USAC/CRA heat win of the 2024 campaign. Tafoya started and finished eighth in the 30-lap main on the pleasant Southern California night. His third top 10 in the series this season propelled Tafoya up to eighth in the championship standings. Going into the next scheduled race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on June 8th, he is only 13 points out of seventh. This Saturday night, June 1st, Tafoya will head to the Ventura Raceway for the third race in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging. Driving the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T 360, Tafoya is ninth in the USCS standings. He is only four points behind the eighth-place driver, 10 points behind the driver in seventh, and only 13 points out of sixth. A good night could see him leapfrog all three. Tafoya, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, scored the first fast time of his career at Ventura in May of 2022. On the same night, he finished fifth in the main event. Last November at Ventura, he made his first appearance in an Inland Rigging car at the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix. A flat tire on the opening night handcuffed him for the weekend, and he missed transferring to Saturday's finale by two spots. Spectator gates for the first USCS race at Ventura will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 5:30. - BRODY ROA RACES TO THIRD PLACE FINISH IN 71 ST SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Cypress, CA, May 30, 2024) Southern California Sprint car racing star Brody Roa made it two podium finishes in a row when he placed third last Saturday night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway. It was his fourth top-four finish in five main event starts in 2024. Things did not start the way Roa and car owner Jayson May would have liked. A small engine issue forced them to miss hot laps. However, in qualifying at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval, Roa turned in a lap of 16.990. That was the ninth fastest time of the night and placed the Garden Grove, California racer on the outside of row two in the third heat race. The veteran steered the gorgeous #8M car to a third-place finish in the 10-lapper. Roa, who won the prestigious Salute to Indy in 2021, started the 30-lap main event in ninth. He was around the top five in the first half of the competitive race, which was a fierce battle from the green to the checkered flag. However, in the last half of the race, the car and the veteran driver began to fly. Running the outside, he moved all the way up to the third-place spot. While he was closing in on second, he ran out of time and finished third. Roa's best lap of the main event, an 18.576, came on lap 19. It was the sixth fastest of the 17 drivers in the race, and it coincided with when he began to pick off cars. He passed six cars in the main event, which was the second-best of any driver. "Yeah, it was good there in the feature," Roa told the crowd after the race. "In some runs we were running everybody down and in other runs we were just kind of hanging. We were really good at the end. It is a positive night. We moved forward, we had some good speed, and we are gaining on it. Jason, his whole family, and all his helpers put this together. It is the nicest racecar out here. It is a pleasure to drive. I am glad I get to come every week and sit in it." Between the USAC/CRA Series and the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, Roa has started five main events. He has finished in the top four, four times. His results include two wins in the USCS. This week, Roa, his wife Tailor, and daughters Addi and Rylee are on vacation. His next racing appearance is scheduled for June 8th when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway in Bakersfield. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - AFTER A BAD BREAK AT BAKERSFIELD, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HOPES TO CHANGE HIS LUCK SATURDAY AT SALUTE TO INDY
(Chino, CA, May 23, 2024) After a bad break in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway, Eddie Tafoya Jr. hopes to get things righted in the 71st Salute to Indy at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. It will be his first appearance in the prestigious race since an eighth-place finish in 2022. Last week at the USCS race in Bakersfield, Tafoya, 26, got off to a good start. Competing against 20 other drivers in qualifying, the friendly racer recorded the second quickest time when he toured "The West Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval" in 13.890. That made him one of only two drivers to break the 14-second barrier on the night. By the time Tafoya drove the immaculate Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T onto the "Okie Bowl" for his heat race, the surface was dry and slick, and passing was going to be at a premium. Tafoya started on the third row and found a sweet spot on the low line. He passed two cars by the time he exited turn two on the first circuit. That put him in third place, where he finished in the prelim. Inland Rigging teammate Tommy Dunkel won the heat. The track crew reworked the surface, and it looked racy for the 30-lap finale. That all looked good for Tafoya, who was starting inside the second row directly behind teammate Dunkel. However, the bad luck that had plagued him the first part of the season struck again! Early in the main, a car clobbered him from behind and flattened his left rear tire. Tafoya limped around the track until lap four, when he pulled to the infield and out of the race with a 20th-place finish. In heading back to Perris on Saturday, Tafoya returns to the track where he had one of his two top-10 finishes in 2024. At Perris, on April 27th, the Chino Hills, California resident placed ninth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car main event. His other top-10 this season came on April 6th, when he placed sixth at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. Tafoya enters Saturday's sprint car war 10th in USAC/CRA Series points. He will climb higher up on that ladder before the night ends. For Saturday's Salute to Indy, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12, it is only $5.00, and children five and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. We will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday for fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. - BRODY ROA WINS HIS SECOND SCLS SPRINT MAIN, NOW FOCUSES ON SALUTE TO INDY AT PERRIS
(Cypress, CA, May 22, 2024) Through the first two races in the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging, one driver stands tall on the top of the win chart and the point standings. That driver is Garden Grove, California's Brody Roa, who has won the first two races in series history. The second of the pair came last Saturday night at Scott Schweitzer's Bakersfield Speedway. This Saturday, May 25th, Roa will switch his focus to the 71st running of the Salute to Indy for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at Perris Auto Speedway. The second night of racing for the USCS Series was pretty much as smooth as glass for Roa. That is, it was smooth as glass until a late race red flag made him work extra hard to score a narrow, photo-finish victory. Roa's 14.021 in qualifying was fourth best in the 21-car field. He followed the impressive time trial run with a win in his heat race. After starting fourth on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," he led most of the main event. However, a late race red flag set up a green, white, checkered situation to end the second night in USCS history. Suddenly, the heat turned to raging hot when young Blake Bower came calling. It took everything Roa had to eek out the victory "It was a pretty smooth night," Roa said of last Saturday at the "Okie Bowl." "Decent in qualifying. Got to the front in the heat race and just kind of drove around the infield tires and won that. I did the same thing in the feature but around the fence." Roa was anything but surprised by the thrilling run to the checkered. "When I saw the #3 on the scoreboard, I knew Bower was good," Roa responded when asked if he expected to be challenged after the late race red flag. "I remember looking at the lineup (before the race), and he was starting way back. So, I knew he had come through the field. I got a little defensive after the restart and I was kind of blocking the slider. That kind of opened it up for him to have a close finish like we did." After steering his own equipment to the USAC/CRA championship in 2023 and driving a couple of different cars earlier this year, Roa has been getting settled back into Jayson May's top-of-the-line #8M for the first time since 2022. It has taken some time to adjust, but as evidenced by his two recent wins in the USCS, things are coming around nicely. He hopes things continue to do so Saturday at Perris. The first appearance of Roa in the #8M at the track affectionately known as The PAS, resulted in an eighth-place finish one month ago. "We have had our challenges," Roa said, about transitioning back to May's car. "We just kind of struggled through the first few races getting everything comfortable for me. We have made some changes. He has gone above and beyond by putting some parts on it that I think work and that I have on my stuff. We have worked at it and I think we have all had our fair share of frustrations already this year. But the couple of races we have finished we have won. We cannot hang our heads about that. I feel we are really starting to get rolling now. The car was really comfortable right off the bat at Bakersfield on Saturday. I am looking forward to taking that comfort to Perris this weekend because the last time we were at Perris we kind of fought it all night. Hopefully, this one turns out a lot better than the last attempt." "It is huge," Roa continued about Saturday's Salute to Indy at Perris. "I still have the milk bottle (the bottle of chocolate milk the winner receives at the Salute to Indy) on our TV stand in the living room. Winning that one means a lot. I had the Oval Nationals Trophy somewhere around there, too. I guess that shows kind of how important that one was to me. It is a big deal in my mind." 2024 is a different season for Roa. After the grind to win the USAC/CRA championship in 2023, he is racing for fun this season. The pressure of chasing a title is gone, and he is only chasing wins, not points. That is evident as, despite leading the USCS points, he will miss the next race at Ventura. "I am going to miss the USCS race at Ventura in two weeks," the veteran driver stated. "So, the points deal has not been a concern there. It is nice just going out to race. We did the same kind of deal a few years ago. 2021 I think it was. We put the wing on a few times and missed some CRA races. We just went to put the fun back in it. It is kind of cool doing that again this year. A championship is the biggest feat you can accomplish in this deal. Getting that done last year was really cool. Now it is nice just going out to race." Thanks to Braden Wassen from Fast Time Designs and Bobby Michnowicz from T Shirts By Timeless, Roa will have his brand new shirts available for the first time on Saturday. To get yours, see him in the pits after the night's last race. For Saturday's Salute to Indy, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m., and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. - AFTER MAIN RAINED OUT AT KERN, EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS READY FOR BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, May 13, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. got off to a fine start when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series, Presented By Inland Rigging, visited Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway for the David Calderwood Memorial on May 4th. A good result in qualifying and in his heat earned him a great starting position in the main event. However, as fast as the 27-car field was, it was not quick enough to beat a pair of rainstorms that hit the track, forcing the main event's cancelation. A field of 27 cars showed up for the race on the 1/3 mile clay oval that sits in the shadows of the more famous paved half-mile, high-banked oval. Tafoya, driving[i] the Tom and Christy Dunkel Inland Rigging #17T, was third fastest in his qualifying group of nine cars with a time of 14.542. That was also the sixth fastest of the 27 cars on hand. Unfortunately, Tafoya's only racing action on the night came in the second heat race. The Chino Hills, California racing star started the 10-lapper in third. The 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion and 2019 USAC/CRA and USAC Southwest Rookie of the Year was in the same spot when the race concluded. Sadly, that heat race would be Tafoya's final event of the night. He was slated to start outside of row four in the main, but two stubborn rainstorms sailed into the track and the main events were canceled. Putting the frustrating, wet night behind him, Tafoya will be back in the #17T when the USCS visits the Bakersfield Speedway this Saturday night, May 18th. Last month at the inaugural USCS race on the same track, the 26-year-old was moving forward in the main event and was up to sixth when mechanical issues knocked him out of the battle. Going into this week's race, he is ninth in USCS series championship points. Tafoya will return to the family-owned #51T when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Perris Auto Speedway for the prestigious 71st Salute to Indy on May 25th. This Saturday at Bakersfield, spectator gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). The track website is bakersfieldspeedway.com and the office phone number is (661) 393-3373. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. - DESPITE RAINOUT, BRODY ROA INCREASES LEAD IN USCS STANDINGS - BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY AT BAKERSFIELD
(Cypress, CA, May 12, 2024) Mother Nature must have a crush on Southern California Sprint Car driver Brody Roa. Going into the last race at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, Roa had a six-point lead in the point standings of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging. By the time she released her wrath in the form of two rain showers that soaked the quarter-mile oval and washed away the main event, Roa expanded his lead to 18-points. Roa, a father of two young daughters who lives in Garden Grove, California, was coming off a win at the inaugural USCS race on April 20th. That victory came on the other side of town at the 1/3 mile high banked Bakersfield Speedway. Last week, he got off to another good start driving the same #8M of car owner Jayson May that he steered to victory two weeks earlier. In qualifying, he was the third fastest in group two with a time of 14.668. That was good enough to be 10th quickest of the 27 cars on hand. In his heat race, Roa started inside the second row. However, he was not there for long. The wily veteran drove May's car to the front of the pack at the end of the first circuit and kept it there for the duration. The victory gave him two heat race wins in the first two USCS shows. All that was left at that point was to make it two main event wins in a row in the series' inaugural season. However, persistent rain arrived before he had a chance to do so. There was hope that after the initial rain stopped, the track crew would get the surface back in shape and the program would continue. Unfortunately, that plan was upended when more rain rolled in and saturated the clay oval for the second time. Sitting on top of sprint car point standings is nothing new to "The Pride of Garden Grove." In 2016, he scaled to the top of the mountain in the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series. Three years later, he won the USAC Southwest Sprint Car title. Last season, he was crowned "King" in the tough USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. In addition, he also has a California Sprint Week Championship on his resume. After taking Mother's Day weekend off, Roa will be in the #8M the next two weeks. This Saturday, May 18th, will be round #3 of the USCS season at the Bakersfield Speedway. The veteran driver will attempt to win his second straight USCS race at the track and his third consecutive overall. Before his win three weeks ago, he won at his only appearance at the track last year when he outdistanced the field in a USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series race. On May 25th, Roa will head to Perris Auto Speedway for one of the USA's longest-running races, the 71st Salute to Indy. Roa won the annual race three years ago in 2021. The initial running of the Salute to Indy, in 1948, was won by four-time Indianapolis 500 starter Dempsey Wilson. Since then, a bevy of open-wheel racing stars, including Roa, have taken home victories in the prestigious race. Spectator gates for Saturday's race on the famous Bakersfield Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). The track website is http://www.bakersfieldspeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (661) 393-3373. The May Motorsports entry is sponsored by Winfield's Racing Engines, RDM Mechanics, Cooper's Propane, TJM Distribution, TJM Distribution, Ten West Towing, Arctic Sea Mining, Wesco International, Elite Signs and Fastenal. Roa would like to thank his own sponsors, "Biker" Bruce Fischer, ALR Virtual Services, Burris Racing, Caltrol, Competition Suspension, Simpson Race Gear, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. - THE FIRST OF THREE MAY RACES FOR EDDIE TAFOYA JR. THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Chino, CA, May 2, 2024) Veteran sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will begin a busy month of racing this Saturday night, May 4th, in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. After taking the Mother's Day weekend off, he will be at the Bakersfield Speedway for the next USCS race on the 18th and at Perris Auto Speedway for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series annual Salute to Indy on the 25th. Tafoya, 26, comes into Saturday's race ranked 10th after the historical first race of the USCS at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks ago. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel #17T at that first race, Tafoya was the ninth fastest of the 30 cars on hand in qualifying. He followed qualifying up with a second-place finish in his heat. In the main, Tafoya, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was moving forward after starting eighth. He marched up to sixth and was streaking toward the top five when mechanical issues forced him to the sidelines with a 22nd place finish. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 mailto:info@kernraceway.com. Last week at Perris, Tafoya contested his 10th race of the 2024 campaign. He was driving the familiar Tafoya family-owned #51T at the track where he captured The PAS Young Gun title in 2018. The personable Chino Hills, California resident came into the night 12th in the series point standings. A lap of 16.873 was the 12th fastest of the night, placing the pretty car with the red chrome trim inside the second row of heat race #3. He pushed the car to a fifth-place finish in the 10-lapper. For the 30-lap main, which turned wild over the last 10 laps with a couple of red flags and numerous yellows, Tafoya started 12th and drove forward to finish ninth. It was his second top 10 in a row in the USAC/CRA Series and was only surpassed by his sixth-place finish at Perris on March 16th. The performance shot Tafoya up to ninth in the championship standings, only 12 points out of eighth heading into the next series race at Perris on Memorial Day Weekend. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. - BRODY ROA GOES FOR TWO USCS WINS IN A ROW SATURDAY AT KERN COUNTY
(Cypress, CA, May 2, 2024) Brody Roa, one of the top traditional sprint car drivers west of the Mississippi, will try to make it two in a row when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway this Saturday, May 4th, for the Dave Calderwood Memorial. Two weeks ago the Garden Grove, California veteran racer won the series inaugural race on the other side of town at the Bakersfield Speedway. Roa made the most of his first appearance in nearly two years in Jayson May's #8M when he outdistanced the field at the first-ever USCS race. In qualifying, "The Pride of Garden Grove," was the fifth fastest of his group and 11th fastest of the 30 cars on hand. He then started on the pole in his 10-lap heat race and scored the win. He again started on the pole for the 30-lap main and emerged victorious again. Combined with a win in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series last June 24th, Roa has victories in his last two appearances on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mil High Banked Clay Oval." Entering this week's race, Roa has a six-point lead in the championship standings in the brand-new series. Last week Roa and May raced together for their first time at Perris Auto Speedway. While they had teamed together at other tracks and May came to Perris once with Chase Johnson, last week was their first time together at The PAS. After a fourth-place finish in his 10-lap heat. Roa started the main event in the 15th spot. One of the keys to the main event ended up being staying out of trouble. While the first 20 laps went relatively smoothly with only one yellow, One of the keys to the race was staying over the last 10 laps was staying out of trouble as there was a pair of red flags and a plethora of yellows. The 2023 USAC/CRA champion managed to avoid the chaos and brought May's colorful #8M home in eighth. So far in three main events in 2024, Roa has one win, two top fives, and three top 10s. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/.
