- Preliminary Results from 44th Annual Dirt Track World Championship
ROSSBURG, OH (October 18, 2024) - The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series took to the track on Friday night at Eldora Speedway for the preliminary night portion of the 44th Annual General Tire Dirt Track World Championship presented by ARP. Sixty-one entries were divided into six heat races. Tim McCreadie, who set the Allstar Performance overall fastest lap in time trials, bolted to the lead at the start of Penske Shocks heat number one, leading all ten circuits to earn the Victory Fuel Pole Award for Saturday night's $100,000 to win finale. Daulton Wilson came from the fourth spot to finish in second place, with Max Blair grabbing the third and final transfer spot. Ricky Thornton, Jr., the current series points leader, dominated all ten laps, leading wire-to-wire in winning Summit Racing Equipment heat number two. Thornton was never challenged for the race lead as he led Carson Ferguson and James Rice to the finish line to advance to the Dirt Track World Championship. In Earnhardt Technologies heat three, Jonathan Davenport split the middle of two other drivers on a restart and pulled away for the win. Trailing Davenport to the line and qualifying for the Dirt Track World Championship were Josh Rice and Hudson O'Neal. In a pivotal Simpson Race Products heat four where the winner would start on the outside front row of the Dirt Track World Championship, Mason Zeigler, a former Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year barely edged Dale McDowell in a photo finish. McDowell and World 100 winner Bobby Pierce completed the top three to punch their ticket into the finale. The fifth heat race saw Jordan Koehler race his way into his first Dirt Track World Championship, leading all 10 laps as the 22-year-old North Carolina racer crossed the line ahead of the 2024 O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year Drake Troutman, who will start his first career Dirt Track World Championship on Saturday as well. Ryan Gustin finished third. Mike Marlar, coming off a Jackson 100 win at Brownstown Speedway last weekend, cruised to victory in the sixth and final heat race of the night. Brian Shirley, the runner-up in the Knoxville Late Model Nationals, came home in second, followed by Devin Moran, who was third. - Mike Marlar Triumphs for First Career Jackson 100 at Brownstown
BROWNSTOWN, IN (October 12, 2024) - Mike Marlar scored a popular win on Saturday night as the Winfield, Tennessee, native picked up his first Jackson 100 presented by Summit Racing Equipment, becoming the 33rd different driver to win Brownstown Speedway's most prestigious event. Marlar collected $50,000 for the win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event, which was the richest in the track's 72-year history. Marlar led 58 of the 100 laps, taking the lead for good from Bobby Pierce on lap 48. He led the rest of the way in a race that saw only one caution flag. Ricky Thornton Jr. moved into second around Pierce on lap 53 as he trailed Marlar to the finish line. Pierce, who led for 42 laps, rounded out the Big River Steel podium in third. Tim McCreadie finished in fourth, and Jonathan Davenport rounded out the top five. Marlar's 23rd career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win was hard-earned as he led on two different occasions during the race. He was out in front for the first five laps until Pierce, who started fourth, took over the point. Pierce then started to pull away from Marlar, but Marlar began to track down the driver who was looking for his 35th win of the season. Marlar was able to catch up to Pierce, passing him with 48 laps scored. For the second time this season, in Lucas Oil Victory Lane, an emotional Marlar emerged from his car in front of an appreciative crowd. "It's been a trying season for sure. I love my guys; they're my family. It's been rough. I mean, usually, I don't get that emotional, but man, we've been through it. I knew the track would clean up pretty fast; I thought I was in trouble when it cleaned up there. I had some good runs but didn't want to be in that traffic. I finally got the open track, and he [Pierce] was struggling a little bit, so I got by him there, and you know he's tough to beat. It's fun racing with those guys. I am getting to be the old guy in the crowd, and you know them young kids can still make me better all the time." Thornton leaves Brownstown as the Midwest Sheet Metal point leader heading into the season finale at Eldora next weekend - holding a 50-point lead in the race for the $200,000 championship. "It was a really good weekend for us. Obviously, we wanted to win tonight; congrats to Mikey. He's been really good this weekend, too. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into Eldora next week. I felt like we've got a little more balance that we've been looking for. So, hopefully, we can keep the speed going. The only thing is I should have got up on the wheel and qualified a little better. But other than that, I think we ran the best race that we could have run there. There were a couple of times I could have run Mikey over for the lead, but I knew he wouldn't race me that way." Pierce, who entered the weekend as the country's top-ranked driver, came home in third. "We have got to get better on the long runs here. We love it, Brownstown is a great facility and racetrack right here in Indiana. We were just loose, and there was not a whole lot we could do. We fell back to third and we were hanging on." - Late Race Pass Earns Thornton C.J. Rayburn Memorial Victory at Brownstown
BROWNSTOWN, IN (October 11, 2024) - Ricky Thornton Jr. passed race leader Bobby Pierce on lap 34 to win the 3rd Annual C.J. Rayburn Memorial on Friday night at Brownstown Speedway. It was Thornton's 14th win this season with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, as he collected $10,000 for the win, leading the final seven circuits. Mike Marlar, the defending C.J. Rayburn Memorial winner, edged out Pierce at the finish to finish second. Pierce, who led 33 of the 40 laps, rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. Completing the top five were Tanner English and Hudson O'Neal. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 42nd time in his career, Thornton earned his third career win at Brownstown with the triumph. "It's awesome to win a race with C.J.'s name on it. He was a pioneer in the sport. It's super hard to be patient in traffic. I almost felt like I was in a better spot than Bobby because I could slow down and see him move out to get around a lapped car. He would pass a lapped car but never really get out, so I knew there, towards the end, I got behind a couple of really good cars around the bottom. I felt like if I followed them and finished the race, they would have to be really good around that middle. It worked out for us. The car was pretty awesome all night." Marlar had one of the fastest cars on the track at one point and drove from tenth to second with 25 laps complete, but he slipped off the embankment and dropped back a few positions. He recovered in the last 15 laps to just edge out Pierce at the line for second. "It was a huge night for us. We have had a rough time, and I hate it for my guys. It's been a rough summer, but you know I was digging hard for C.J. I thought I put it on my lid there, coming off four in that lap. I just didn't get there. It was a good race. The fans saw a good race. Bobby and Ricky, we had a little excitement there at the end. Ricky snuck in there. It's a rare thing to see Bobby get caught up in something. I am just glad to get the 157 anywhere near the front." The winners' Bobby and Jessica Koehler-owned, Koehler Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Coltman Farms, Hoker Trucking, D&E Outside Services, Capital Waste, Traffic Control Safety Services, Ultimate Towing and Recovery, Rogers Realty and Auction Company, Inc. Five Star Metal Buildings, and Sunoco Race Fuels. Dennis Erb Jr., Max Blair, Brandon Sheppard, Jonathan Davenport, and Devin Moran completed the top ten. He made some connections to get hop-up parts at a discount, and it wasn't long before his drag racing buddies found out and wanted the same deal. From such humble beginnings Summit Racing Equipment was born. - Davenport Breaks Through With First Career Pittsburgher
IMPERIAL, PA (October 5, 2024) - Jonathan Davenport, a three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, has previously come close to winning the Pittsburgher presented by Big River Steel. However, on Saturday night, he dominated the 70-lap feature race and secured his first Pittsburgher win, taking home $50,000 out of the $150,000 purse. Davenport first raced at the "Monster Half-Mile" known as Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway nine years ago. On Saturday night, he put an exclamation mark on the event by becoming a first-time winner. Devin Moran charged from the 12th starting spot to finish second, earning $20,000 for his runner-up finish in the Double Down Motorsports entry. At the checkers, Moran finished 1.864 seconds behind the winner and maintains a 10-point lead heading to Brownstown Speedway next weekend over Davenport in the Chase for the Championship. Max Blair put on another strong performance in a Crown Jewel event, finishing third on the Big River Steel Podium. Tim McCreadie, who held second place at one point during the race, finished fourth, and former Pittsburgher winner Hudson O'Neal rounded out the top five drivers. For the 40-year-old native of Blairsville, Georgia, the win was his 83rd in his Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series career, breaking a tie with Jimmy Owens for second on the all-time win list. "I have been coming here since 2015, the first time I was with Kevin Rumley. I fell in love with the place. This place is awesome, it's big and wide, and it raced like I never thought it would tonight. I would have thought for sure it would have moved back up the racetrack." The race was slowed by only one caution flag, with 42 laps scored. Davenport had built a 7-second lead over the field, but the huge advantage would disappear with the restart. "We just got to where we were running around the bottom there, and I was making pretty good time on the lapped cars that were still way out on the track. I knew we had a pretty good long run there, and I said before the edges of our tires were killed. I figured the first couple of laps when we went back green would be more momentum, so I tried to float out and just kind of move around, but I just didn't feel the racetrack as good as I needed to even when my tires cooled down so I just kept migrating back to the bottom." Moran, who won the weekend opener on Friday night, quickly came up through the field from his outside the sixth-row starting spot. He climbed to third and then eventually to second before the caution flag. But, on the restart, Moran slipped back to fourth but recovered in the remaining laps to close the gap on Davenport, but he never could get close enough to make a last-lap challenge. "That restart, you know, I have watched a ton of film from here. The bottom got the top on the restarts like 12 out of 15 times, so I thought that bottom would be good, and that's why I picked it. The top was just cleaned up enough, so I had to get back by Hudson [O'Neal] and Timmy [McCreadie] again. Our car ran really, really good tonight. I felt like we had a great car, and JD did too, obviously. Congrats to him on the win. I think we will have a dogfight in these last three races." Blair, like many other competitors in the field, was seeking his first win in Pittsburgh, his home state. He finished third in the Centerline Motorsports entry and earned a $10,000 prize. "Even if we have started farther forward, I wasn't real good at the beginning of the race. The bottom had so much moisture in it the first little while I think you had to be in it, and I wasn't good enough to be in it down there. I just rode around for as long as I could, but once it slowed down, you could run across the racetrack. This car really came alive at the end of the race. I thought I was going to run second there for a minute. To run third in the Pittsburgher is pretty awesome." The winner's Lance and Darla Landers-owned, Double L Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine is sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dyna Gro Seed, Lucas Oil Products, Bob Cat of Batesville, Bilstein Shocks, ASC Warranty, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, VP fuels, and Midwest Sheet Metal. Ricky Thornton Jr., Mason Zeigler, Clay Harris, Carson Ferguson, and Drake Troutman completed the top ten.
