- EDDIE TAFOYA JR. WINS TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX HEAT BUT DROPS OUT OF QUALIFIER WITH A FLAT TIRE
(Chino, CA, November 24, 2023) Eddie Tafoya Jr. returned to the Ventura Raceway for the first time in a year and a half on Friday night for the sprint car portion of the 82nd running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix. After an impressive win in his heat race, Tafoya was knocked out of his qualifier with a flat left rear tire. A photo of Eddie Tafoya Jr. and his father Eddie Tafoya Sr. and the Specialty Fasteners' logo is attached to this release. Fresh off a trip to Las Vegas for last week's Formula 1 race, Tafoya squared off against a tough field in the sixth heat of the night. Starting from the pole on the track that is located on the beach about 70 miles north of Los Angeles, the personable Chino Hills, California driver flew into the lead at the Chris Kornder green flag. In the last half of the race, he faced a stiff challenge from the second-place car. However, he hit his marks and fought off the advances for a well-deserved win. With the addition of Inland Rigging as a sponsor for the holiday weekend race, Tafoya came back onto the 1/5 mile oval for Qualifier #4. Combined with his win in the heat, a good performance in the 12-lap race would guarantee him a spot in the dash and Saturday's A main. Tafoya was in third when disaster struck on lap two. The second-place car slid sideways and came to a stop in turn four. Tafoya had virtually nowhere to go and clipped the front of the car. Another driver, who also had nowhere to go, clobbered Tafoya and sent him onto the nose of the car that spun. Two more cars piled in and Tafoya's #51T tipped over onto its right side. When the red flag came out for the incident, Tafoya scrambled out of the cockpit as fuel was pouring from his car. Amazingly, it appeared none of the cars suffered significant damage in the tangle and all were ready for the restart. However, after bumping back off, Tafoya's left rear tire deflated and he pulled to the infield, and out of the race. What looked like a trip to the dash and guaranteed spot in Saturday's main event, has turned into Tafoya now having to contest a preliminary main and finish well to get into Saturday's Turkey Night Grand Prix finale. He and his car are capable and he is one of the favorites to transfer out of the preliminary into the A main event. After competing most of the season in the USAC National Sprint Car Series, Tafoya has honed his skill against the best and his car is top-notch. Combined, they are capable of coming through the field to compete for the victory. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with racing at 5:00. Advance tickets are available and advised at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/82nd-annual-turkey-night-grand-prix-tickets-629591554287?aff=oddtdtcreator. - ONE TAFOYA OUT - ONE TAFOYA IN - SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Chino, CA, November 10, 2023) Sprint Car racing is a very unpredictable sport. Most people attribute that to the ever-changing dirt track surfaces. That unpredictability is predictable. However, something that is unpredictable is going to happen at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night. Rising young star Eddie Tafoya Jr. lost two engines last weekend at the Western World Championships at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway. Thus, he is out for Saturday's 2023 finale at Perris. However, his father, Eddie Tafoya Sr. is back in a car after quite some time out of the cockpit. This scenario all came about when Tommy and Christy Dunkel, the 2023 USAC/CRA car owner champions, offered Tafoya Sr. the ride in their 360 car to race with the Senior Sprints this Saturday. Seven years ago, Tafoya Sr., a past draft pick of baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates, won The PAS Senior Sprint Car Series championship. He has also started a handful of USAC/CRA main events. With experience at the track not only in sprint cars but also off road cars, Tafoya Sr. jumped at the opportunity. Tafoya Sr. actually gave up his ride to Eddie Jr. in 2019. One year earlier, Eddie Jr. won The PAS Young Guns championship. One night when the family patriarch was late for a race, Eddie Jr. jumped in and hot lapped the car. He did so well that his dad left him in the car and began watching from the sidelines. The move paid dividends as the youngster, who won the USAC/CRA and USAC Southwest Rookie of the Year awards in 2019, has turned into one of sprint car racing's fastest rising stars. Last week at Cocopah for the Western World, Eddie Jr, qualified ninth fastest of the 33 cars on hand. However, issues started when he began fourth in the first heat race and almost immediately slid back into the pack. The B main was different. Eddie Jr. started third and stayed there for the first 2/3 of the race. At that point, he went from third to the rear and pulled off a couple of laps later. Two races and two engines down, his 410 season had come to an end. While Eddie Jr. will be out of this week's race, he will be back in action at the 82nd running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix on Thanksgiving weekend. The prestigious race will take place on the same Ventura Raceway where he earned his first Woodland Auto Display USAC/CRA Fast Time award a year and a half ago. All active military members with proper ID will get into Saturday night's race at Perris for just $5.00. In addition, they will receive one free pass for an accompanying guest. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The track website is http://www.perrisautospeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (951) 940-0134. - 100 LAPS TO GO! PLACERVILLE'S HANGTOWN 100 PRESENTS BIG CHALLENGE FOR USAC MIDGETS
Placerville, California…One-hundred laps. It's a daunting task in a midget any way you slice it. For one, it's imperative to ensure you can make it the distance, not only mechanically but physically and mentally as well. It's challenging, but this is why racers do what they do. To face off against tasks most ordinary individuals wouldn't dare take on and to defeat their peers in competition. That's what we'll be witnessing for two straight nights with the fourth running of Hangtown 100, promoted by Matt Wood Racing, at California's 1/4-mile Placerville Speedway featuring the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship on November 17-18, 2023. Here's six of the many storylines we're watching at this year's edition of the one and only 100-lap USAC Midget race of the season. KYLE LARSON RETURNS TO HANGTOWN Placerville Speedway is the home to some of Kyle Larson's most cherished racing moments. It's the place he made his first sprint car start. It's the place he won his first sprint car race. It's the place he describes as his "home track." Now, for the first time in 2023, Larson (Elk Grove, Calif.) will be making his first USAC National Midget appearance of the year for the running of the Hangtown 100. He will forever be known as the first ever winner of the Hangtown 100, capturing the inaugural running of the event back in 2019 after starting 10th, then won a Hangtown prelim in 2021 after charging from the seventh spot. Larson, the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series champion, is a frequent hard charger at the Hangtown 100, driving from 23rd to fourth on night one in 2019 and 12th to sixth in the 2021 opener. KOFOID EYING RARE BACK-TO-BACK FEAT OF 100-LAP WINS No driver has won consecutive 100-lap USAC National Midget features since Sam Isenhower on the indoor concrete, coke syrup-infused surface of Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum in 1988. No driver has won consecutive 100-lap USAC National Midget features on dirt since Ron Shuman in 1982 at the Terre Haute Action Track's Hut 100 and Ascot Park's Turkey Night Grand Prix. Buddy Kofoid (Penngrove, Calif.) intends to change that in 2023 at Placerville where he comes in as the defending Hangtown 100 winner. In fact, he's won his past two USAC Midget starts at Placerville, scoring the night two prelim and the finale in 2022. Kofoid, the 2021-22 USAC National Midget champion, will also try to maintain Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports' stranglehold of the Hangtown 100 after having swept all three nights of the event in 2022 with driver Tanner Carrick also taking the opener. Already a winner at Placerville this season, Kofoid grabbed a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car triumph there in September's 49er Gold Rush Classic. WINNING A PIECE OF THE PLACERVILLE PIE Speaking of drivers who've already achieved winning performances at Placerville this year in other disciplines, there's quite an array of drivers in that category. Carrick (Lincoln, Calif.) gave Keith Kunz Motorsports his 134th USAC National Midget victory during last year's Hangtown 100 opening night prelim, making KKM the winningest team in series history. Carrick has been a regular in winged 360 Sprint Car competition this year at Placerville, scoring a feature win in July while finishing eighth in the standings. Carrick, a two-time USAC National Midget winner, will be aboard the No. 98 midget for KKM at Placerville and also the two nights at Mered (Calif.) Speedway on November 21-22. Shane Golobic (Fremont, Calif.) will drive for car owner and Hangtown 100 promoter Matt Wood in the event. Golobic won the World of Outlaws stop at Placerville in 2019 and scored a 360 win of his own this past August. The 2017 USAC Indiana Midget Week champion will be vying for his first USAC National Midget feature win since 2016. Furthermore, Michael Faccinto (Hanford, Calif.) is the 360 Sprint Car track champ at Placerville in 2023, having won one main event. The two-time USAC Western States Midget titlist will pilot a midget out of the Graunstadt Enterprises/Matt Streeter Racing stable and also bagged a USAC WSM victory at Placerville in 2022. Jake Andreotti (Castro Valley, Calif.) and newly crowned USAC WSM champ Brody Fuson (Bakersfield, Calif.) have also been victorious with the USAC WSM series at Placerville of late with Andreotti scoring in 2022 and Fuson this past July. HANGING 10 AT HANGTOWN The Hangtown 100 of 2021 was a banner weekend for both Justin Grant and Ryan Timms, and between the two drivers, they own five USAC National Midget victories in 2023 and reside inside the top-four of the series standings. Grant (Ione, Calif.) raced past Buddy Kofoid with 14 laps to go to win the Hangtown 100 finale that year at the place he described as the place "where I grew up; this is where I fell in love with racing; this is the place where I decided I wanted to be a racecar driver." Timms (Oklahoma City, Okla.), at just 15 years, 3 months and 12 days old, made history on night one of the Hangtown 10 to become the youngest feature winner in the history of USAC National Midget racing, a record that stands to this day. Grant's been on a hot streak of late, having won two of the last three after going winless with the series until late September. Timms, meanwhile, wants to finish strong driving for the same team and car number that has won each of the past two Hangtown 100 features with Kofoid in the seat in 2021. STRAIGHT TO THE POINT The Hangtown 100 format is a bit different than the norm with the accumulation of points playing a role front and center on the stage throughout the two nights of the event. Points will be earned via finishing position and number of positions advanced throughout each night, which will not only seed the starting lineups, but also will pay off in the end. The driver accruing the most points throughout the Hangtown 100 will receive a $12,500 reward. Friday's 30-lap, $5,000-to-win feature will pay appearance points only toward the USAC National Midget standings. Saturday's 100-lap, $8,000-to-win finale will pay feature points only toward the USAC National Midget season-long tally for all licensed series drivers and entrants. THE LONE 100-LAP USAC MIDGET RACE OF THE YEAR Furthermore, the event is the one and only 100-lap event on the USAC National Midget calendar this season. Once a regular feature on the schedule in the early years of the series, these days, it's a rare event. In fact, this year's Hangtown 100 will be the 398th 100-lap feature run in the series' history since their debut in 1956, and the 117th in the state of California. Four drivers in this year's Hangtown 100 field have experienced the feat of winning 100-lap USAC Midget races: Kyle Larson, Justin Grant, Cannon McIntosh and Buddy Kofoid. All but McIntosh's victory at Huset's Speedway came at Placerville. Larson captured the Hangtown 100 at Placerville in 2019 as did Grant in 2021 and Kofoid in 2022. McIntosh's 100-lap victory came in 2022 at South Dakota's Huset's Speedway. McIntosh has yet to win at Placerville, twice finishing second in 30-lap prelim features in 2021 and 2022. THE DETAILS: Front gates open at 3pm each night at the Hangtown 100. Reserved and general admission ticket packages for the Hangtown 100, along with single night tickets, are available at www.hangtown100.com. Tickets will also be available at the gate on race day.
- EDDIE TAFOYA'S LONG SEASON WINDING DOWN IN ARIZONA AND CALIFORNIA
(Chino, CA, November 2, 2023) A long season that began in February in Florida will begin to wind down for Eddie Tafoya Jr. when he contests this weekend's annual Western World Championships at the Cocopah Speedway. After Saturday, he will head to Perris Auto Speedway for the USAC/CRA Series finale on November 11th and the sprint car portion of the 82nd Annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway on Thanksgiving weekend. Tafoya's 2023 barnstorming tour saw him spend the majority of his time competing in the USAC National Sprint Car Series. He raced in eight different states and battled the rain in five of them. Since the Chino Hills, California racer returned to his home base in early September, he has made two appearances with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. A challenger for the win in both, fate intervened each time and robbed him of having a chance to score victories. Tafoya headed back to the friendly confines of So Cal after a race in Arkansas on September 9th. Two weeks later he made the short 30-minute trek from his home to Perris Auto Speedway. On his first night back he earned the second Woodland Auto Display Fast Qualifier award of his career with a lap of 16.831 on the famous half-mile clay oval. The well-spoken driver followed that up with a fourth-place finish in his heat race. In the main, he was up to second place and closing on the leader when a flat tire knocked him out of the race. On October 14th, Tafoya and the crew headed west for his second 2023 appearance at the Meyer's family Mohave Valley Raceway. He qualified 10th fastest on the banked 1/3 mile track, won his heat, and was once again headed to the front after starting 10th in the 30-lapper. Clearly one of the fastest cars on the track, he was battling for second when his engine laid down and knocked him from the competition with a frustrating 13th-place finish. This weekend will mark Tafoya's first appearance on the fast Somerton, Arizona oval since last season's Western World Championships. In 2022, he made five appearances at the track beginning with the first three USAC/CRA races of the season. After placing seventh and ninth on the first two nights, he scored his series-best finish with a hard-fought second on night three. At last season's Western World, the affable racer made the main event each night placing 19th and 16th. Two seasons ago when he contested the Wester Worlds at the now defunct Arizona Speedway, he had 12th and 21st place finishes. For fans who want to see this Friday and Saturday's Western World Championships in person, gates at the Cocopah Speedway will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00. Reserved seats are $35.00 and general admission is $25.00. Students 13-17 are $15.00. Kids 12 and under get in for free. The track is located at 3450 W County 15th Streets in Somerton, Arizona (85360). The track website is racecocopahspeedway.com and the office phone number is (602) 292-7607. For those who cannot make it to the Arizona speed plant, the race will be shown live on Speed Sport TV. Ordering or more information is available at https://speedsport.tv/videos/30446. - EDDIE TAFOYA IS FAST AGAIN BUT BAD LUCK TAKES AWAY A POTENTIAL WIN
(Chino, CA, October 21, 2023) The first two races Eddie Tafoya Jr. contested on his return to California have shown that the veteran driver has been more than fast enough to win the mains. However, Lady Luck has not been on his side and each time she knocked him from the fray before the race was over. Tafoya's latest western racing excursion took place about three and a half hours away from his Chino Hills, California home at the Mojave Valley Raceway. Last year the friendly driver made two trips to the Arizona speed plant that is located minutes from the Colorado River. His first venture to the track produced a third-place finish in March of 2022. Five and a half months later, he recorded another top-10 finish when he crossed under the checkered flags in eighth place. Earlier this year, he qualified third fastest in the 30-car field, won his heat race, and started fifth in the 30-lap main on the 1/3 mile clay oval. He was running in the top five before stopping and having to restart at the back. In the remaining 25-laps, he passed more cars than any other driver and finished 12th. His latest sojourn to the Arizona track had the same feel to it until the main event. "It was good until it wasn't," Tafoya lamented on last week's Dirt Tracks and Rib Racks podcast. "It went kind of like at Perris the race before. We qualified all right, in 10th. Had to start third in our heat and we won it. It definitely felt good for whatever reason. I just kind of jell with that track. The size and shape kind of suits my style." From early on in the latest Mohave main, Tafoya was on his game. He steered the handsome #51T forward toward the front and was a major factor in the race. In fact, he seemed to be the fastest car on the track early on. "In the main event I got to second, technically," Tafoya explained on the Indiana-based podcast. "By lap 10 we had three cautions and restarts. I had to pass Yeley three times (he passed him three times for second but each time a yellow came out within a lap and they went back to the last completed lap). I was third after a red and my motor started lying down. It eventually got pretty bad so I popped the thing out of gear and pulled into the pits." Unfortunately, his early departure turned a potential main-event victory into a 13th-place finish. Next up for Tafoya will be the annual Western World Championships at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway. Following that race he will contest the USAC/CRA season closer on November 11th at the Perris Auto Speedway. - FLAT TIRE SPOILS EDDIE TAFOYA JR'S HOMECOMING
(Chino, CA, September 30, 2023) After spending the majority of his season on the road with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, Eddie Tafoya Jr. returned to his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for the Glenn Howard Classic. Unfortunately, the Chino Hills, California racer's triumphant return home was spoiled by a flat tire with 10 laps to go in the race. Competing on the West Coast for the first time in seven months, the handsome 26-year-old came out firing on all cylinders before the appreciative crowd. Twenty-three other cars showed up for the race on the West Coast's premiere dirt track. Tafoya topped them all with the fastest lap in hot laps. Minutes later when it counted, he recorded the quickest qualifying time when he toured the half-mile clay oval in 16.381. That was his first-ever fast qualifying effort at Perris and his second ever in the series. His first came in 2022 at the Ventura Raceway. Being the fastest qualifier meant Tafoya had to start sixth in his heat race. Later in the night, the best he could start in the main was sixth. In order to do that, he had to finish fourth or better in the 10-lap heat. Anything worse than that and he would have to start seventh in the main event with one more fast car in front of him. The now-seasoned veteran driver did what he had to do and placed fourth in the heat. Like it proved to be in hot laps, qualifying and his heat race, the eye-catching silver #51T was fast in the 30-lap main event. Make that very fast. For the first 1/3 of the race, he was in a battle with several foes as he attempted to move forward. Finally, around lap 10, he made his move and began picking off cars and heading towards the front of the pack. "The first 10 laps I think there was seven of us all over the place," Tafoya said of the early portion of the main. "I was just kind of hanging out and seeing what the guys were doing. Then about lap 10, I started making moves and getting runs on people. I even got three of them at one time coming out of two." His charge toward the head of the pack had the fans on the edges of their seats in anticipation of a tremendous battle for the first-place check and trophy. However, bad luck intervened and it cost him from having a chance to win to finishing a frustrating 18th. "When I got to Tommy (leader and eventual race winner Tommy Malcolm), we had a restart and I kind of stayed with him for a lap or two," the confident racer continued. "Then we had another caution and I could start to hear my tire and started seeing my hood lean the other way. So I knew something was going away. I hung with him for a couple of laps even with it going down. The last restart we had it was completely flat and I could not do anything with it." The car was so good all night long that the team made very few changes. What changes they made were speculation and they proved to work. "We made some changes, but not because I was uncomfortable or anything," the 26-year-old racer said regarding the early portion of the night. "The changes we made were just trying to keep up with the track and what we thought it was going to do. I had not even touched my shocks yet by the time I got the flat. I still had a lot left and we were definitely coming forward and I think we were the car to beat." Tafoya's concentration on competing in the Midwest this year paid big dividends on his first race back at the track where he began racing sprint cars. If not for the flat, he may have picked up the "W." "It is a huge deal," Tafoya said when asked if racing with the USAC National Series had anything to do with his best Perris performance. "Usually (at Perris) I am either quick in hot laps, or qualifying, or win the heat race or something like that. But to have that speed all night long, every time we were out there, shows that the intensity I have been racing with (on the USAC National tour) is helping. Here you can wait around a little bit and see what people are doing. Back there if you wait around for half a lap you will get passed by three cars. You definitely need to be on your toes and keep trying to go forward." Great news for fans and bad news for the competition is the fact that Tafoya will finish out his season at the final four USAC/CRA races of 2023. First up will be a trip to Arizona's 1/3 mile-banked Mohave Valley Raceway on October 14th. That will be followed by another trip to the "Copper State" on the first weekend in November for the annual Western World Championships. He will then finish the season at Perris on November 11th. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. BACK AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY NIGHT
(Chino, CA, September 22, 2023) The 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, Eddie Tafoya Jr., will be back on his old stomping grounds, Perris Auto Speedway, for the Glenn Howard Classic this Saturday night. It will be his first race back in So Cal since April. He will be staying on the home front to finish out the last five races in the USAC/CRA Series. Last offseason Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, announced his intention to spend much of the season competing in the toughest traditional sprint car series in the world, the USAC National Sprint Cars. That is just what he did. Following his original plans, he started the year in Florida and contested 20 races with the national group. Six other races were rained out and he ran two open shows. In addition, he contested three USAC/CRA races earlier in the year. Hitting so many new tracks, Tafoya was on what seemed like foreign soil. Yet, for the most part, he did not ask a lot of questions. "I mean, I don't really ask too many questions too often," Tafoya said. "I try to listen to people. I don't really go out of my way to ask questions. We just try to figure it out. I think that is a good way for me to learn. Just trying things. I have to figure out how to do these things and not have someone helping me all of the time and spoon-feeding me. It feels good when you get in the main and you know that you and your guys did it all by yourselves." Tafoya did not cherry-pick the easy races with the National Series for his 2023 schedule. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He opted in for races at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway, Iowa's Knoxville Raceway, the grueling Indiana Sprint Week, and Kokomo's Smackdown. Those tracks accounted for 14 of his 20 starts back there. They are some of the fastest, most competitive tracks in the country and they draw the toughest drivers. That level of competition can be very tough in more ways than one. Bent parts and broken pieces are one of the hazards of the game. However, the smooth-driving Tafoya managed to steer clear of the mayhem. That is a huge benefit to any racing program and a team's finances, too. "Knock on wood, so far, we have hurt one radius rod and one drag link, that was it," Tafoya said. "That was on the same night during Sprint Week. We have been pretty fortunate to keep our wheels clean this year. Last year or the year before we picked up a lot of speed and had some big crashes and wrecked our stuff. That kind of set us back for a couple months trying to figure things out and get the ball rolling again. When you can show up every night and keep driving it (without damage), it definitely benefits you in the long run." "I feel pretty good," Tafoya answered when asked if he was happy with the way things went on the national tour. "The nights I was good, I had bad luck or adversity. You know, I pulled a bad pill or we barely missed transfers. At Texarkana, I qualified 17th. Three-tenths would have put me in eighth place I think it was. Things like that. When you are competing at that level, things just kind of have to fall in place." In addition to the tracks Tafoya had competed on in the past, he was on some new ones this year. He thinks going to tracks he had never been to before helps. "I would say it helps with experience," he explained. "You see a lot of different stuff. When you come back to places you do know and there is something different, you can lean on your notebook and your memory bank. Maybe you have seen something like that before and can adjust for it." Tafoya closed out the USAC National Series portion of his season with races at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, and Texarkana 67 Raceway in Arkansas two weeks ago. He qualified for both main events through the heat races. At Devil's Bowl, he placed second in his heat. He started 22nd in the main on the big, fast track and drove forward to 18th. The first Texarkana race was rained out, but in the finale, he finished fourth in his heat and 20th in the main. For fans who want to see Tafoya and the other USAC/CRA stars in action on Saturday, the spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For fans 65 years of age and older, it is $25.00. For kids six to 12 it is just $5.00 and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. They can be purchased online at tix.com or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to buy advance tickets, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds (home of the Southern California Fair), one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego. To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway, and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. For directions online, the address to enter is: 18700 Lake Perris Drive and the zip code is 92571. The Specialty Fasteners #51T team is always exploring corporate partnership opportunities. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS RACING IN TEXAS AND ARKANSAS THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, September 5, 2023) Eddie Tafoya Jr. headed back to the airport on Wednesday to get ready for the USAC National Sprint Car Series races this week in Texas and Arkansas. On Thursday, September 7th, he will be at the famous half-mile high-banked Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. He will then journey to Texarkana, Arkansas for races on Friday and Saturday at the semi-banked 1/4 mile Texarkana 67 Speedway. For Tafoya, it will be his initial appearance on each of the tracks. The driver, who lives 35 miles east of Los Angeles in Chino Hills, California, was slated to make his Devils Bowl debut on April 28th and 29th. However, those races, along with one at the Rocket Raceway in Petty, Texas the night before, were all rained out. He salvaged the wet trip by high-tailing it to the I70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri to finish seventh in a POWRi War Sprint Car Series race on April 29th. From there he headed northeast to the Eldora Speedway for his initial appearance on the famous high banks during the first week in May. On the western Ohio track, he qualified for both USAC National Sprint Car mains on the Tony Stewart-owned oval placing 18th and 19th. Tafoya made a couple of sojourns to Indiana over the past couple of months. The first came in late July when he competed in the grinding Indiana Sprint Week making the A main event at the legendary Terre Haute Action Track and the Bloomington Speedway. He concluded that trip with another main event appearance in a Boss race at the Paragon Speedway. Results from all of Tafoya's 2023 racing endeavors are at the end of this release. Not long after the Indiana Sprint Week trip, Tafoya returned to the "Hoosier State" for the prestigious 12th Annual Smackdown at "Indiana's Baddest Bull Ring," the Kokomo Speedway. As has been the case with Tafoya most of the year, the three nights of racing were in the USAC National Sprint Car Series. For the pleasant driver who turned 26 years old earlier in the season, things did not go the way he wanted at Kokomo. However, he is fired up and ready to compete in the world's premiere traditional sprint car series once again this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. After the conclusion of the Smackdown, Tafoya and the crew drove the team hauler to Texas for this week's race. They left it there and hopped on a flight home to California. They flew back to Texas Wednesday morning to get the car ready for this week's action. Even though he has not raced the full USAC National Series schedule, the personable driver is still 25th in the championship standings and is only 16 points out of 23rd heading into the three races. For fans not able to make it to Texas and Arkansas for the races, all three nights will be shown live on Flo Racing.
