- WNY Doubleheader Kicks off June for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | To kick off the month of June, the Empire Super Sprints are set to head to Western NY for a doubleheader weekend. For the only time in 2024, the tour will make a stop at the Ransomville Speedway in Ransomville, NY on Friday night and at the Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan, NY on Saturday night. Friday's trip to the Ransomville Speedway will again pay tribute to Ron Lux in the 25 lap Ron Lux Memorial paying $2,000 to win. Lux competed in the supermodified division at Oswego Speedway where he was a champion, along with the USAC sanctioned sprint car events. His career came to an untimely end in 1966, as Lux succumbed to injuries sustained in a USAC sprint car crash at the age of 28. On Saturday, the tour moves an hour and a half south to the Freedom Motorsports Park. Saturday's event at Freedom will be one of the highest paying tour events of the season, with $4,800 being added to the purse in memory of Julia Horton. The added prize money has been distributed through the field - the A-Main will pay $4,000 to win, $600 for 10th and $400 to start! Last year at Freedom, it was Jonathan Preston who was victorious. The weekends Cobra Coaches Dash Series dashes will pay $125 to the winner of the four lap affair each night courtesy of IndyKart Raceway Indoor Karting. IndyKart is an authentic indoor racing experience where drivers can compete in professional, fully electric racing karts at speeds of over 45mph on a European-style racing circuit. Pricing information and a full order of events for the weekends on-track action can be found on both Ransomville and Freedoms websites and social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), Twitter (@ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). - Varin Wins Don Gillette Memorial at Brewerton Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | For the second time in two years, Danny Varin is the winner of the Don Gillette Memorial at the Brewerton Speedway. Leading every lap, Vain picked up $2,000 for his efforts to kick off Memorial Day weekend. Starting on the Pinnacle Pole alongside Chris Hile, Varin jumped out to an early lead. Hile followed Varin in second for the majority of the first 10 laps, before 4th place starting Shawn Donath moved into the top 3 on lap 11. While Donath, Hile, and Jason Barney were busy battling at the front of the field, however, Larry Wight and Chad Phelps were each working on an impressive run from deep in the field. Starting 7th, Wight fell back as far as 10th in the opening laps before picking his way through the field. By lap 11, Wight had cracked the top 5, and moved into third just a few short laps later on lap 15. Phelps had started 21st, and by lap 8 had passed 11 cars to break into 10th. The following four laps, Phelps moved by four more cars and found himself in 6th place. Meanwhile at the front of the field, Varin was still in command, closely followed by Shawn Donath who had worked his way into the second position, and Larry Wight. With four laps to go, Wight moved past Donath to take second. As the field crossed the line, it was Varin who got there first, followed by Larry Wight and Shawn Donath rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. Jason Barney finished fourth, and Chad Phelps rounded out the top 5. Phelps' run from 21st to 5th was good enough to earn him the A-Verdi Storage Containers hard charger award. 35 cars signed into the pits on A-Verdi Storage containers night at the Brewerton Speedway. The field was split into four hot lap / qualifying groups, with Jordan Poirier, Shawn Donath, Dylan Swiernik and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in each. E&V Energy heat wins were scored by Jordan Poirier, Jason Barney, Dylan Swiernik and Danny Varin. The Cobra Coaches Dash presented by J&Z Snowdrifters was won by Tyler Rand, while Chad Phelps won the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday June 7th at the Ransomville Speedway in Ransomville, NY, followed by a trip to the Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan, NY the following night, June 8. - Brewerton, Fulton up Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | Coming off a successful start to the 2024 season just a few short weeks ago, the Empire Super Sprints are set to get back in action this coming weekend for a Memorial Day doubleheader. The tour will stop at Brewerton Speedway on Friday May 24, and then return to the Fulton Speedway for the second time in 2024 the following night, Saturday May 25. Friday's trip to the Brewerton Speedway will be the first of three stops for the tour at the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon' in 2024. The event will once again pay respect to the late Don Gillette, who was a Brewerton, NY native climbing the sprint car ranks before he tragically lost his life at the Trenton Speedway when he was 29 years old. Danny Varin is the defending winner of the Don Gillette Memorial, and Paulie Colagiovanni was victorious in the other two stops at the track for the tour in 2023. Saturday night, the cars and stars of the Empire Super Sprints will move just 25 minutes up the road to the Fulton Speedway, where Jason Barney picked up the season-opening win at the end of April. Barney has been nearly unbeatable at Fulton with 8 wins in the last 13 events held there, and a total of 11 victories dating back to 2014. Coming into the weekend as the points leader, he is sure to once again be a force to be reckoned with at both tracks. Friday night's program will receive extra support from J&Z Snowdrifters, who have come on board to present the Cobra Coaches Dash Series Dash. The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), Twitter (@ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). - Barney Continues Fulton Dominance; Wins ESS Opener
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | The start of a new season brought a familiar face to victory lane Friday night at the Fulton Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints. Jason Barney picked up his first win of 2024 and fourth in his last five visits to the Oswego County oval after coming from his seventh starting position. Pinnacle pole winner Davie Franek and Chad Phelps led the field to the initial start, though the field quickly slowed for a caution for the #68 of Aaron Turkey, a victim of circumstance from hard racing deep in the pack. On the ensuing restart, Davie Franek quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead over Matt Tanner and Phelps. The field again slowed for a caution on lap 4, this time for Mike Bowman who found himself stopped facing the wrong way on the back stretch. By lap 7, defending tour champion Jordan Poirier had entered the mix and was able to take the lead. For the next handful of laps, Poirier continued to grow the distance between himself and second place. Jason Barney, who had moved into second on lap 8, began to close the gap between himself and Poirier on lap 11 when Poirier reached lap traffic. He was ultimately able to use lap traffic to take the lead as the field came to complete lap 19, and never looked back on his way to victory lane. "I was running out of time and running out of chances as the race went on," said Barney in victory lane. "Before that last restart I kind of found the middle, and I rolled by Jordan (Poirier) there. I knew he wasn't going to let that happen again. He went right to the middle and I just had to keep searching around." "He made it interesting, I wasn't sure what to do there, I could tell he wasn't sure to do either and I just stuck it down on the bottom and hoped that we didn't touch." Defending champion Jordan Poirier led a handful of laps early on, and was able to hold on for a second place finish. "My car was really, really good. I just took a safe lap around a lap car, and Jason slid under me there," said Poirier. "We struggle with these kind of conditions, so it feels good to have something to build on for the next few races for sure. Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was hometown favorite Larry Wight. "We were a little bit tight on the bottom, we just had to move around to find out what the car liked," said Wight. "I don't know, even if we had a caution, these guys were in clean air and setting a really good pace. We just needed the lap cars to fall my way a little better." 36 cars signed in to the pits for the 2024 season opener. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Danny Varin, Jordan Thomas, Jonathan Preston and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat race wins went to Matt Tanner, Davey Franek, Dylan Swiernik, and Kelly Hebing. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main was won by Mark Smith, and the Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Dirt Track Digest was won by Mike Bowman. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday May 24th at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY.
