- Placerville Speedway caps busy month with Carnett Clash
Placerville, CA…Placerville Speedway is set to finish off the month of July with one its more special nights of the year for the Mountain Democrat Ltd. Late Models and Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks, with the annual "Carnett Clash" taking place this Saturday. The 59th season of competition at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds bullring continues its summer run with a loaded card at the event. Along with the Late Models and Pure Stocks, we also welcome the Thompson's Family of Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks and Vintage Hard Tops. This Saturday is also the final event to offer free parking thanks to the El Dorado County Fair Association. Live music will be performed from 4-6pm at the entertainment zone featuring the tunes of Tamra Godey. Bryan Carnett was a true fan of the stock car divisions at Placerville Speedway while racing, owning, and sponsoring both Pure Stocks and Late Models throughout the decade he spent at the track. Bryan had a knack for storytelling. He could carry on a conversation with anyone and oftentimes had people in tears laughing from his sense of humor. He was known for his generous, caring personality and was always willing to give of himself to help someone in need. On October 18, 2015, after a short but aggressive battle with brain, bone and lung cancer, Bryan passed away at his home in Placerville surrounded by his family. Martinez driver Anthony Slaney brings the Mountain Democrat Late Model point lead into Saturday on the strength of three wins in five races. Lincoln's Dan Brown Jr. isn't far behind however, as he sits just seven points back in second. Five-time track champion Nick Baldwin has earned four wins with the Red Hawk Casino Pure Stocks and stands 10-points up on Kevin Jinkerson going into the Carnett. The Mountain Democrat Trucks are all about Mike Miller, who has secured four wins and maintains a 43-point advantage at the top. The Thompson's Winged Sprint Cars also showcase a close battle with just one-point separating Andy Forsberg and Shane Hopkins at the front of the standings. Bubba Decaires ranks third, just five-markers back, while recent winner Tony Gomes is only 18-points back in fourth. - Courtney takes command late to capture Kubota High Limit Diamond Classic Night One feature victory
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 28, 2024) - Tyler Courtney took the lead with five laps remaining Friday night and went on to capture Night One of the Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic at Lucas Oil Speedway. Courtney, of Indianapolis, roared from third and into the lead after a lap 24 restart and went on to earn $10,000 with his fourth Kubota High Limit Racing feature win of the season. He beat Brad Sweet at the finish with James McFadden capturing third. The series returns for Saturday night's Diamond Classic finale with $25,000 awaiting the feature winner. "The last time I ran here, I won in a Midget (in 2016) and it's pretty cool to come back in a winged car and have success," the ninth-starting Courtney said in victory lane. "That was fun, a lot of fun." Courtney, driving for Clauson Marshall Racing, finished two seconds clear at the checkers as he pulled away from Brad Sweet and the rest after taking the lead on lap 25. He was the fourth and final leader of the 30-lapper. "The track was quite a bit different than the heats, but I don't think you could ask for much more than that," Courtney said of the action-packed event. "There was racing everywhere. A hot day, but a great day." Courtney picked up an additional $4,500 along with lucky fan Patrick Walker after the Durst Dice Roll, which was a nine - and Courtney won from ninth. Sye Lynch won the drag race with fellow front-row starter Corey Day and grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, with Sweet settling into third. The top three were separated by only one second when the first caution flew on lap three. Day grabbed the lead away from Lynch on the restart and used the cushion on the high side to open a 1.7-second lead in just four laps. He soon was dealing with lapped traffic and suddenly slowed to a crawl entering turn three on lap 10. Day, who won two nights earlier at Lake Ozark Speedway, was unable to continue. Lynch re-inherited the lead with Sweet second and Courtney third. Lynch pulled away after the restart to lead by nearly two seconds by lap 15. Action ground to a half at that point as Brent Marks rolled his car in turn four, bringing out the red flag. Sweet swept to the lead after the restart, coming on the outside of turn four to complete lap 17. Before he could get too far away from Lynch, a lap-20 caution flew as two cars spun in turn four. Lynch was applying the heat to Sweet with Courtney right behind when a caution appeared on lap 23 for a one-car spin in turn four, leaving seven laps to settle things. Courtney took second away from Lynch on lap 24, then grabbed the top spot the next time around. Courtney rolled from there, driving away for the victory over series points leader Sweet. McFadden, who started 13th, captured third with 14th-starting Tanner Thorson fourth and Lynch winding up fifth. "Luckily I was third there and Sye got Brad to moving around," Courtney said. "I just stuck to my guns there and just ran the top as hard as I could and came away with the win." Sweet said his car was not quite have the car dialed in enough to win. "I'm happy to get locked into a little bit better spot for tomorrow," Sweet said. "That's important on this prelim nights to run top four. I felt I wasn't quite good enough to win, no matter which line I was trying to run or make work it seemed like someone was pushing me. "Sye was getting back to my inside, so I committed to the inside. I just wasn't good enough. I had to slow the car down way too much to run the bottom, but running the top I would get spinning on the (turn) exit. Tyler was just clearly a little bit better than us tonight." Marks of Myerstown, Pa., set the fast qualifying time with a lap of 13.039 seocnds. That came up just shy of the track record held by Garet Williamson, who ran a 12.998 in the POWRi 410 Bandit Sprint Series on Aug. 19, 2023. Tyler Davis wins Heartland Modifieds: Tyler Davis of Haysville, Kan., took over the lead on lap 21 and held on to beat Tad Davis by half a second in the Heartland Modified Tour feature. Tad Davis rolled to the lead at the start and opened a 1.1-second lead over Chad Wheeler by lap 10. The leaders hit heavy lapped traffic soon after with Wheeler pulling alongside Tad Davis a couple of times, but was unable to get by. Tyler Davis joined the battle with Wheeler for second and he was able to take over with four laps to go. Gabe Hodges rallied late to grab third with Wheeler fourth and Kenton Allen coming home in fifth. The winner said he felt the continuous green-flag run worked to his advantage. Tyler Davis started third, right behind Tad Davis and Wheeler. "When we first took off, it was kind of humid out here tonight and it's easy to spin the tires," Tyler Davis said. "Once we got rolling, the maneuverability of our car showed. We've got some new stuff we were trying tonight and it was pretty good. "I'm glad to get back to victory lane. We've been getting our butt kicked lately against the USMTS Tour. I'm just happy to be up here." The Heartland Modified Tour will again be in action as support class for Saturday's Diamond Classic finale. - Five drivers to watch as Kubota High Limit Diamond Classic makes its first visit to Lucas Oil Speedway
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 27, 2024) - One of the most-anticipated events of the Lucas Oil Speedway season is coming up Friday and Saturday with the inaugural Kubota High Limit Racing Diamond Classic. Feature winners will earn $10,000 on Friday with the stakes rising to $25,000 for Saturday's main-event winner. While many of the nation's elite 410 Winged Sprint drivers will be on hand, here are five to keep an eye on: Corey Day: The 18-year-old from Clovis, California, already was considered a rising star in the open-wheel world before he joined the Kubota High Limit series prior to the 2024 season. Day has lived up to the billing with five series feature victories, the latest of which might have been the most impressive. Day drove from a 15th starting position to the front in just 14 laps at Wednesday's Kubota High Limit Midweek Money Series at Lake Ozark Speedway. Day led the rest of the way to earn the $20,000 prize. It continued a huge recent stretch for Day. Last weekend, he won $79,6000 at the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Burlington, Washington. Earlier this year, he drove a late model on pavement for the first time, for JR Motorsports, and won a feature at Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. Brad Sweet: The 38-year-old Sweet, from Grass Valley, Calif., co-owns the Kubota High Limit Series with his brother-in-law, Kyle Larson. One of the big winners in sprint-car racing for two decades, Sweet leads the Kubota High Limit points chase and has six feature wins and 24 top-10 finishes in 25 events. The five-time World of Outlaw Sprint champion also has extensive experience driving in the NASCAR Nationwide Xfinity Series and Truck Series. Tyler Courtney: Another long-time big name in open-wheel racing, the 30-year-old from Indianapolis sits second in Kubota High Limit points 88 behind Sweet with three feature victories in the Clauson-Marshall Racing No. 7BC. After dominating the USAC ranks in the late 2010s with a Sprint Car and Midget championship to go along with 50-plus wins across three divisions, Courtney switched to wing racing in 2021 and quickly became one of the nation's best. Rico Abreu: Hailing from St. Helena, Calif., the 32-year-old Abreu has picked up two feature wins on the Kubota High Limit circuit in 2024 and stands fifth in points coming to Lucas Oil Speedway. Abreu emerged on the national scene by wining the Chili Bowl in back-to-back years, 2015 and 2016. Abreu won four of six Kubota High Limit Midweek Madness races in 2023 and came up a close second to Kyle Larson for the points title before signing on for full-time High Limit Racing in 2024. Ryan Timms: Another up-and-coming open-wheel star has experience finding victory lane at Lucas Oil Speedway. Ryan Timms, a 17-year-old from Oklahoma City, captured the prestigious Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial championship last fall, earning $10,000. In limited action with the Kubota High Limit circuit in 2024, Timms has picked up a pair of top-10 finishes. He has eight feature wins overall this season. - Derek Brown earns emotional victory in Lucas Oil Speedway headliner; Lyle, Kruse, Wells also capture wins
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 22, 2024) - Sixth-starting Derek Brown of Stoutland held off William Garner in a caution-free O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature to headline Saturday's Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series program at Lucas Oil Speedway. The victory, while worth $750 for Brown, was priceless for its personal meaning. He said in victory lane it was dedicated to his friend Brian Webster, a fellow racer who passed away on Friday due to cancer. Webster, 36, was a Richland High School graduate who drove in the USRA Stock Cars division. "That one was for him," Brown said, noting that his motor's water temperature was running a red-hot 260 degrees late in the 25-lapper. "But I wasn't pulling off for nothing." Other feature winners on Ozarks Food Harvest Food Drive Night at the Races were Chad Lyle (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds), Dustin Kruse (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods) and Justin Wells (Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models). Brown grabbed the lead on lap five of the USRA Stock Cars feature and didn't give it up, though things got a bit dicey near the finish as Garner applied pressure and a lapped car nearly spun Brown in the final turn "Luckily I had it straight enough when the run into me that I didn't spin out, but I sure thought I was there for a minute," Brown said. Midseason division points champ Jaylen Wettengel took the early lead from the front row, but Brown rolled from fifth into the top spot on lap five. Wettengel fell all the way back to fourth with Mason Beck and Garner in between he and Brown. Brown, Beck and Garner staged a three-way battled over the next several laps, not separated by more than a couple of car lengths. Brown was able to stave off the challengers and, with the race remaining green, built up a 1.5-second lead over Garner by lap 13. Garner cut into the lead and was within on second by lap 18 with Beck and Wettengal well behind. Once again, Garner pulled right on the back bumper of Brown to complete lap 21 as both drivers hugged the low groove. On the final lap, Garner made one final charge but Brown was able to hang on for a .630-second victory. Wettengel finished third with Beck fourth and Waylon Dimmitt fifth. Lyle earns USRA Modified victory: Chad Lyle of Lone Jack took the lead on lap four and drove away to win the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified victory, beating runner-up Jason Pursley by 1.7 seconds. Chris Spalding started on the pole and grabbed the lead at the start, but Lyle was able to advance from the fourth-starting spot into the lead by lap four. Lyle wasted no time opening up a 1.3-second lead over the next three laps with Lyle second and Pursley in third. Pursley used the high groove to power around Lyle for the runner-up spot on lap nine with Lyle nearly two seconds clear of the field. Caution flew on lap 10 for debris on the track, wiping out Lyle's margin. It didn't matter as Lyle had a solid restart and quickly drew off to another sizable lead and the race remained caution-free the rest of the way. It was the veteran driver's first victory of the season. Dean Wille rallied from eighth to third with Henry Chambers improving six positions from the start to come in fourth. Spalding wound up fifth. South Dakota invader Kruse wins USRA B-Mods: Dustin Kruse made the eight-hour haul from Baltic, S.D., worth it with a wire-to-wire victory in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature. Kruse held off JC Morton after a late-race restart to win in his first visit to Lucas Oil Speedway in 2024. "Holy cow, we won at Lucas Oil. That's awesome," Kruse said in victory lane. He noted that the only other time he has competed in Wheatland was at the 2022 USRA Nationals and it was not a good result. "This red dirt is so different than that black dirt that we have back home," Kruse said, noting "we got our butts kicked" in his only other attempt at Lucas Oil Speedway. Outside pole-starting Kruse opened up a 2.1-second lead over fifth-starting Morton by lap four, with Eric Turner running third. Kruse continued to stretch his command, with a 2.6-second margin at the midway point. Morton moved to the high side of the track and began to cut into the lead as both had to deal with lapped traffic. Kruse's lead was back to two seconds by lap 16 when the first caution of the race put some mystery into the outcome as it set the stage for a four-lap shootout. Morton tried the low side on the restart, but couldn't make up any ground. Kruse rolled from there and beat Morton by 1.4 seconds. Jake Richards captured third with Turner fourth and Colson Kirk fifth. Wells bounces back in POWRi Late Models: After having his winning streak snapped at six on June 15, Justin Wells returned to victory lane in the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model division. Wells, the veteran from Aurora, led all 20 laps and held off Tommy Cordray after a late restart. Wells is seven-for-eight this season after his streak ended a week earlier. "Track position meant a lot tonight," Wells said after scoring win No. 112 in his 2006 TNT chassis. "We didn't feel too balanced. I don't know, we're off just a little bit somewhere, so we'll have to go home and work on it. But I'm sure glad to get the victory." Wells started up front after winning his heat race and set a blistering pace in the feature. He needed only five laps to led Tyler Kuykendall by two seconds with JC Morton third. The reigning track champion kept pouring it on from there, with a 3.4-second gap by lap 10. That's when the caution flew as Kuykendall spun in turn four as he and Morton were battling for position. Kuykendall had to restart at the rear, leaving Morton in second, Cordray third and Tucker Cox fourth. Cordray cleared Morton after the restart in turn four of lap 11, but Wells again checked out from the field. Wells was 4.4 seconds in front when another yellow slowed the action on lap 17 with Cox spinning in turn two. Wells handled the restart and held off a strong-running Cordray over the final three circuits. The final margin was three-quarters of a second. Jim Greenway finished third with Morton fourth and Richard Kimberling fifth.
