- Sheppard Wins Fifth DTWC; O'Neal Secures First Career Lucas Oil Title
NEW WESTON, Ohio (October 22, 2023) - Brandon Sheppard won his record-tying fifth General Tire Dirt Track World Championship - Presented by ARP on Sunday night at Eldora Speedway. Sheppard tied with Freddy Smith for the most wins in the 43-year history of the race as the Illinois racer earned $100,000 for his victory. Sheppard who had just enough fuel to coast across the finish line barely edged out Hudson O'Neal for the win in a race that saw a record eight lead changes. The previous high for lead changes was the inaugural Dirt Track World Championship in 1981 where five different drivers led the race. O'Neal with his runner-up finish claimed his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Seres National Championship which will earn him and his car owner Mark Richards a dirt late model record $200,000. O'Neal finished 0.084 seconds behind Sheppard at the finish. Devin Moran battled with O'Neal for several laps as the two went back and forth to decide the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title. Moran came home in third in the final race rundown which clinched second place in the championship points. Tim McCreadie clinched fifth in the championship points by placing fourth in the Dirt Track World Championship. Dale McDowell rounded out the top five drivers in the 100-lap race. Jonathan Davenport jumped to the lead at the start and would lead the first six laps of the race. It was a close battle up front with Davenport and Mike Marlar, who led lap seven. O'Neal, who in his last appearance at Eldora won the World 100 in September, came from the sixth position to grab the lead on the eighth circuit. The car on the move was West Virginia's Tyler Carpenter, who roared from his 17th starting spot to pass O'Neal for the race lead on lap 24. Carpenter was in front until lap 32 when Brian Shirley would become the fifth different driver to lead the race. However, Shirley's lead was short lived as mechanical issues sent him pit side under caution ending his night. Carpenter, who was third at the time, also pitted during this time. McCreadie would pick up the lead for four laps before Bobby Pierce took command after being involved in an early race caution that also involved Ricky Thornton Jr. who suffered severe right front suspension damage which forced to pit side, loosing several laps in the process. Pierce would stay in front until lap 60 when Sheppard became the eighth and final leader of the race. A caution with 97 laps complete would show Sheppard in front with McCreadie holding down the second spot. On the final restart Sheppard would hold the lead, but his car started to show signs he was low on fuel. O'Neal and Moran were able to close on the final lap, but Sheppard was able to eke out the win. Sheppard, who led the final 40 laps for his 31st career win with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series was relieved to make it to the finish line. "I was able to make it to the line, Hudson almost got me there. That was a pretty crazy end to the night. When I crossed the line for the white flag I ran out of gas. I had just enough gas to make it to the line, every time I have driven this car it has been good all year. It was phenomenal. The first couple of laps I don't know what happened. I think we knocked the brake line loose on the left rear or something. I came in and the guys got it tightened up. I didn't have time to get the brakes bled. I went back out and the caution came back out, luckily really quick, and we were able to come in get it bled out. It was perfect after that." "I went pretty hard there at the beginning just to get some distance just in case the leaders would come around and I would get lapped," Sheppard added. "There about halfway I was running around the middle to the bottom, and I really felt pretty good there. Also, about midway through the race I found a line that worked pretty good for me through the middle in one and two. Once I saw some of those drivers dropping out, and we were picking a few of them off, I thought I was finally trying to wake up." O'Neal came up just short of his first Dirt Track World Championship victory, but secured his first Lucas Oil title. "This is unbelievable. It was a war of attrition. I had two flat tires, led at one point, was a lap down at one point, so I had every emotion I could think of that happened during that race. What a race it came down to with me and Devin. It was kind of rough and tumble out there, but the way it came out it made a great race for the championship and it about made it a great race for the win. I think somebody [Sheppard] ran out of fuel coming to the checkered or something. Hats off to my whole team and family. This sport will drive you crazy sometimes, it helps to have a good backdrop of people to rely on." O'Neal joins his father, Don who won the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title in 2014. "I can't believe it turned out the way it did. Hats off to the Eldora track crew. They worked their tails off all weekend no matter what the racetrack was they couldn't help it; they did the best they could. It rained for three days straight they did a great job." Moran, earning his best career finish in the Dirt Track World Championship and in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship points, went back and forth with O'Neal in the final laps. "It was a great comeback year. We got off to a good start in Speedweeks and then we really struggled in the first month or two after that. That was about as exciting there at the end as it could get. I think everyone is going to talk about this for a very long time. Thanks to the whole Lucas Oil family for a great series to race with." The winner's Sheppard-Riggs Racing, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Valvoline, True Timber Camo, Dennis G. Woodworth Attorney at Law, Wyld Gear, Riggs Drilling Solutions, Sheppard Auto Sales and Salvage, D&E Marine, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten were Bobby Pierce, Jimmy Owens, Ricky Thornton Jr., Garrett Smith, and Jonathan Davenport. - Thornton Earns Hard-Fought Second Career Pittsburgher at PPMS
IMPERIAL, PA (September 30, 2023) - Ricky Thornton Jr. survived a back-and-forth battle between himself and Jonathan Davenport to earn his second career Pittsburgher win in the last three years on Saturday night at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Thornton took home $30,000 of the $100,000 feature purse held before a large crowd of spectators for first-year promoter Blair Kress Jr. Devin Moran rallied from seventh in the closing laps to secure the fourth spot and final spot in the Big River Steel Chase to the Championship Presented by ARP. Tim McCreadie came from eighth to finish in third. Hudson O'Neal earned the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race finishing in fourth after starting 16th on the grid. Earl Pearson Jr. rounded out the top five drivers. Michael Norris grabbed the lead at the start of the 75-lap main event and would lead the first 13 circuits until the front gate leading to and from the grandstands to the pit area was clipped by Norris. The incident would bring out the first caution of the race. After the race restart Thornton would grab the lead for the first time in the race on lap 14. Thornton would hold the point until lap 37 when Davenport passed him for the race lead. Davenport was opening up his lead until a caution appeared with 47 laps scored. Thornton was slowly reeling in Davenport as the two raced through heavy traffic. The two would then go back-and-forth for the lead in a thrilling race for the top spot until Davenport clipped the wall in turn two damaging the right rear of his car. Davenport, who seeking his first career win in the Pittsburgher would fade to eighth at the finish despite leading a race-high 34 laps. After getting by Davenport, Moran would run in the second spot for the final three laps of the race - trailing Thornton by 2.215 seconds at the finish. Thornton's win was his 23rd this year on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series tour and his 34th overall victory of 2023. "He [Davenport] was way better than I was. On the restarts I had to get back by Brandon [Overton] and I pretty much held it on the floor after that. I have got to thank Clements for building an awesome motor here it held up for the final 60 laps flat on the floor. I guess I wanted it a little bit more. He [Davenport] was starting to get tight on entry and I just started to move my line around a little bit. That was the first time I think I have ever gotten a 10 to go signal so I thought it was a five to go. I drove a lot harder after that, but this team never gives up. It was definitely some hard racing," said the winner who collected his seventh series win in nine starts in September. Moran battled with McCreadie to the very end to lock up the fourth spot heading to Eldora. Brandon Overton would slow with mechanical issues on lap 54 yielding the fourth spot after running as high as second in the race. "This is always such a long race, because it's a big track," said the runner-up whose father Donnie won the race twice during his career. "The top got really, really good on both ends. It was definitely not the way we wanted to make it there at the end with Brandon breaking, he was really good too. We put ourselves in position and my crew just worked their tails off all year, and especially in the last two months, kudos to them for preparing me such a great racecar and coming up with these podium finishes." McCreadie, the two-time and defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "I got the car a little too tight in the center where I couldn't rotate good enough which I haven't been able to do most of the season. It was probably the wrong time to do it. We should have kept it in the same vicinity as we were in the heat. We feel a lot better than we did a few months ago. Now we can concentrate on winning at Eldora in a few weeks." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns-owned, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Coltman Farms, Hoker Trucking, Dyno One, Inc., Sub-Surface of Indiana, West Side Tractor Sales Company, D&E Outside Services, Certified Inspection Service Company, Inc., Midwest Sheet Metal, Excel Floor Covering, Murty Farms, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten were Max Blair, Alex Ferree, Jonathan Davenport, Brandon Overton, and Mason Zeigler. - Mike Marlar Captures C.J. Rayburn Memorial Friday Night at Brownstown
BROWNSTOWN, IN (September 22, 2023) - Mike Marlar and the late C.J. Rayburn were long time friends and on Friday Night he paid the best tribute he could to one of his racing mentors - winning the 40-lap 2nd Annual C.J. Rayburn Memorial at Brownstown Speedway. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event drew 45 cars to the historic Southern Indiana venue. Marlar grabbed the lead from Nick Hoffman on lap nine when Hoffman slipped off the frontstretch. Marlar then went on to take the $10,000 victory ahead of Ricky Thornton Jr., Devin Moran, Jonathan Davenport, and Hoffman. The race went green to checkers without any caution flags. Hoffman jumped to the lead at the start of the race and held the top spot for the first eight circuits until he got off the track on the frontstretch allowing Marlar to take over. Hoffman held the second spot behind Marlar for several laps with Brandon Overton, Thornton, and Moran all in the hunt. Thornton outdueled Overton moving to third and then passed Hoffman for second. Thornton then caught Marlar bringing Moran and later Davenport into the fray. At one point the top four were separated by mere seconds as Marlar would fight off challenges for the win - the 21st Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of his career. Marlar's third win this season with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series was arguably the most emotional of his racing career. "I will try to keep it together, C.J.'s special to us and when he passed away, I took it as hard as when my granddad or anybody. I fought hard there, I didn't have the best car, but he [C.J.] was up there helping me out. I was just making it happen. I am just glad that C.J.'s family and all of these supporters of Brownstown Speedway were here. He [C.J.] means so much to all of us and we hated to lose him, but nobody ever lived as good as he did. So, I just really miss him, and miss him everyday honestly and I was glad to get this race won. It's definitely one of the biggest ones for sure." Thornton looking for his series-leading 21st win of the season pulled alongside Marlar on several occasions but settled for second. "He [Marlar] was good we had a couple of shots and just got ran off the racetrack. But we'll try again tomorrow congrats to him [Marlar] he had a really good car. I was watching him at the beginning, and he could just fire off better than any of us. But I felt like in the longer race our race will be pretty good tomorrow, overall, the track was pretty good I am glad they did something to it." Moran, who was in the thick of things in the waning laps rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "They finally widened the track out enough and you could get on the bottom. The track was really good. We could race all over it. Congrats to Mikey I know him and C.J. were pretty tight, so it was cool to see him win." The winner's Ronnie Delk-owned Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Can-Am Auto Salvage, Delk Equipment, Petroff Towing, Bilstein Shocks, Paulson-Stussy Construction, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Midwest Sheet Metal, Capital Race Decals, Delk-Marlar Racing Development. Completing the top ten were Brandon Overton, Tim McCreadie, Jason Jameson, Josh Rice, and Daulton Wilson. - Davenport Dominate to Win Second Career Hillbilly Hundred
MIDDLEBOURNE, WV (September 3, 2023) - Jonathan Davenport raced to a convincing 55th Annual Hillbilly Hundred - Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts victory on Sunday Night at Tyler County Speedway. The 3-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion took the lead on lap 17 from Daulton Wilson and went unchallenged the rest of the way for his second career win in America's oldest dirt late model crown jewel event. Davenport's triumph was worth $30,000. Wilson, who led the first 16 laps of the race from his pole starting spot finished in second earning a $15,000 payday. Brandon Overton, the 2018 winner of the race was third with Ricky Thornton, Jr. taking fourth and Hudson O'Neal rounding out the top five. Davenport in Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 72nd time in his career notched his second biggest win of the 2023 racing season only behind the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora in June. "One time they [lapped traffic] were four-wide in front of me there and I was thinking I am just going to have to ride here for a while. We got into a couple of lapped cars there I didn't really mean to. The racing line is so sensitive right here to get off the corner good you really have to turn in and once you're under somebody you really can't do it so it kind of pushes. My guys really stepped up and did a really good job for me, we all put our heads together all day today. We kind of wanted to go in a different direction. We have been o.k. we've slowly been getting better. We just felt like we needed to try some new stuff," said the Blairsville, Georgia native. Wilson, who led feature laps both at Portsmouth and Tyler County this weekend continued his recent run of solid finishes, coming home in the runner-up position. "We've had a really good car all weekend. We have had a really good year we've gotten better as the season went on, maybe we will finish up there before too long. I wanted it to stay green we were on harder tires than he [Davenport] was, earlier in the race I just couldn't maneuver like he could. Once the racetrack cleaned up a little bit, I felt like I was pretty good." Overton rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "Lapped traffic was a challenge tonight. We were o.k. in the beginning, me and Daulton got to racing with some lapped cars and one of them kind of ricocheted off the wall and got me in the right front. I was just glad to finish. I thought I was going to have a flat, but JD and Daulton just checked out on us there. Like I said we are trying to get better and still try and hang on for this fourth spot in points." The winner's Lance and Darla Landers, Double L Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dyna Gro Seed, Lucas Oil Products, Bilstein Shocks, VP Fuels, Mark Martin Automotive, ASC Warranty, Midwest Sheet Metal, and Fast Shafts. Completing the top ten were Tim McCreadie, Jacob Hawkins, Spencer Hughes, Devin Moran, and Max Blair. - Thornton Back in Victory Lane at Portsmouth River Days Rumble
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (September 2, 2023) - The dream season continues for Ricky Thornton Jr. - winning his 17th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event of the year on Saturday Night at Portsmouth Raceway Park - earning $15,000 for his triumph in the River Days Rumble. Thornton, who started seventh on the grid charged to the lead on lap 32 past Daulton Wilson. Devin Moran tried to make it close in the waning laps but had to settle for second-place 1.786 seconds behind the winner. Wilson, who led 15 laps during the race rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. Brandon Overton, who led seven of the 50 laps was fourth with Hudson O'Neal rebounding from a flat tire and passed Jonathan Davenport on the final lap for fifth. O'Neal coming off a $50,000 victory last weekend at Port Royal took the lead at the start of the race and held the point for the first nine laps until Overton, who started alongside O'Neal on the front row took the lead on lap 10. Overton held the lead until Wilson wrestled it from him on lap 18. Wilson put himself in position for his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win for the second year in a row at PRP. A caution with 29 laps scored however would halt Wilson's momentum. On the restart Thornton would move into second as he then set high sights on Wilson. Wilson stumbled slightly in turn two and that allowed Thornton to clear him with a slider to take the lead. There would be two more cautions in the race as Moran would threaten Thornton for a few laps before Thornton eventually opened enough breathing room. Thornton, who was the fourth different leader of the race fell back at the start, but charged to the front gaining the lead with 18 laps remaining as he spoke from Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 22nd time in his career. "I love coming to this place, I wished we raced here more often. It's nice to come here two nights in a row and be on top both nights," as Thornton was referring to his $10,000 victory in the unsanctioned Boone Coleman Memorial on Friday Night. "My confidence kind of increased as the race went on. I really didn't get that good of a start. I probably fell back to 13th or so and then I was able to drive back up through there. So, it was really good. I don't know why Brandon [Overton] picked the bottom on that restart, but it worked out for me. I was way better on the restart. I thought that Daulton pretty much had it and then pushed that one time and that was my shot to get by him and it all worked out." Moran, who started behind Thornton in ninth and moved to second in the final 10 laps was highly complimentary of the track crew after the race. "First off, kudos to Portsmouth Raceway Park they put on a heck of a racetrack for us tonight. You know this is the only time we come here this year and I think this is one of the best tracks Portsmouth's ever had for us. I want to thank them for a great racetrack and thank all of these fans for coming out. I think Ricky Thornton's pretty fast, but we got a little bit closer tonight. I thought we had a chance there for a second, but his team's just really good." Wilson, who was leading the Boone Coleman Memorial the night before terminal engines issues knocked him out of the race came back with another solid effort on Saturday. "We really had a good car for two days in a row. Our guys busted their tails today to get this motor changed. It took off right back in the same spot. I thought I had a car good enough to win there I just kind of screwed it up there a few laps, but you'll have that. We will keep learning and keep working and maybe we will be standing up where Ricky's at before too long." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns-owned, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Coltman Farms, Hoker Trucking, Sub-Surface of Indiana, Dyno One Inc., West Side Tractor Sales Company, D&E Outside Services, Certified Inspection Services Company, Inc., Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Murty Farms, Midwest Sheet Metal, and Excel Floor Covering. - Hudson O'Neal Charges to Rumble by the River Victory at Port Royal
PORT ROYAL, PA (August 26, 2023) - Hudson O'Neal battled his way to the lead with seven laps to go and pulled away in the final laps to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Rumble by the River on Saturday Night at Port Royal Speedway. O'Neal earned $50,000 from the $150,000 feature purse for the Rocket1 Team. O'Neal's winning margin of 1.808 seconds was the largest lead anyone had held during the 50-lap event. Mike Marlar came home in second as he passed Jonathan Davenport with two laps to go. Davenport was third with Matt Cosner and Brandon Overton completing the top five. Brandon Overton jumped to the lead at the start of the race as he and O'Neal, who started alongside Overton on the front row tucked into the second spot. Those two ran first and second for the first 16 laps of the race until Davenport was able to secure the second spot on lap 17. Davenport then moved to the lead on lap 21 as the first caution flew with that lap was scored. On the restart Davenport had to contend with O'Neal, Marlar and Overton in a tightly contested battle for the race lead. With O'Neal and Marlar all over Davenport another caution came out with 27 laps complete. All eyes were on the current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader Ricky Thornton, Jr. who was slicing through the field after starting in 25th for having to go to back-up car. Thornton moved to fifth by lap 36 and trailed only Davenport, Marlar, O'Neal, and Devin Moran. Thornton would not be around at the finish as he slowed on the track under a caution with ten laps to go after just reaching second past Marlar in the running order. Thornton's night ended after a spectacular run from the tail of the field as he would be pushed back to the pit area after stopping in the middle of the back straightaway with mechanical issues. Davenport was still on the point with Marlar and O'Neal behind him on the single-file restart. O'Neal then got past Marlar and set his sights on Davenport. With seven laps to go O'Neal made his move for the lead getting by Davenport and then going on to win his seventh Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event of 2023. Marlar passed Davenport at the white flag to pick up the second position at the finish. O'Neal described his hard-fought victory in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. "It's awesome. I had to get up on the wheel I was just so tight against that cushion I was afraid to run it. It just came down to the last ten laps and I knew I had a shot at it if I could run it hard enough if I could get enough of a run down the straightaways. The crew gave me a great race car all weekend, we were able to get back into victory lane last night and I knew coming into today we had a great piece we just needed to play our cards right." Marlar earned $20,000 for his third straight Big River Steel Podium finish. "It was a good race you know we just talked to the man who preps the track he does a phenomenal job on the racetrack really; we owe him a lot of thanks for the awesome racing we saw all weekend. It was fun for sure. My car was balanced really good, but it won't wheel spin good so when I wheel spin on the cushion, I am just a little wrong there somehow and that's how a lot of these races are getting won. We are so close it depends on how it all plays out. We got one or two more laps before those cautions; I think we could have got the lead and I would have been gone." Davenport's third-place finish earned the 3-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion $10,000 as he led a race high 24 laps. "Those guys were just a little better than me I thought I was o.k. and then Mikey could run a little bit lower than I could and Hudson could just run around the cushion a little bit better than I can. I gave it all we had. I tried to not tear it up too bad. I just wish it would have been a 40 lapper tonight." The winner's Mark Richards Racing, Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ace Metal Works, Gunter's Honey, Petroff Towing, Rocket Pre-Owned Motors, WR1 Sim Chassis, O'Neal's Salvage and Recycling, Sunoco Race Fuels, Integra Racing Shocks, and Performance Grading. Completing the top ten were Tim McCreadie, Devin Moran, Cody Overton, Garrett Alberson, and Logan Roberson.
