- Joe Trenca Victorious at Fulton Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | Continuing the trend of new faces in victory lane, Joe Trenca picked up the win on Saturday night with the Empire Super Sprints at the Fulton Speedway. After riding in second for the majority of the event, he passed Johnny Smith for the lead with two laps to go to secure his first win of 2024 with the Tour. After drawing the Pinnacle Pole Award, Johnny Smith jumped out to the early lead over outside polesitter Joe Trenca. The lead duo would remain that way for the majority of the event. While Smith and Trenca paced the field, the show was behind them as both Jason Barney and Billy VanInwegen started mid pack and were meticulously working their way through the field. Having started 14th, Barney had worked his way permanently into the top 10 by lap 5, and on lap 11 had begun to pick off cars lap by lap, moving into the top 5 with just 3 laps remaining. VanInwegen was writing a similar story, having started 8th, he worked his way into fifth by lap 3 and then up to fourth on lap 13. With just two laps to go, Trenca was able to get by Smith, who had led the entire race up until that point and lead the final laps to pick up his first victory of 2024. "I could run the bottom, and I knew my pace was really good but the lap cars didn't work out," said Trenca. "We ran each other clean and we got the win." "He (Smith) could have shut the door on me hard there and he raced me clean. I was really good through the middle, I could use the wing to try to capitalized on that (slidejob) and we did it." Johnny Smith was able to hold on for the runner-up position. "Halfway through the race we lost brakes, and I knew I was getting held up by lap traffic," said Smith. "He (Trenca) did a phenomenal job and I knew that if we got another yellow then I was going to be out of luck - I'm really happy to come home second." Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We have enough race car, enough crew and enough engine, the driver just doesn't always do the right things and do his job the best that he can," said Barney. "Last night was disappointing, we just moved forward to tonight. We felt like we learned some things, or at least did some things we know worked instead of doing things that don't." The field was split into three timed hot lap groups at the beginning of the night, with Billy VanInwegen, Logan Crisafulli and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jordan Poirier, Sammy Reakes IV and Jordan Thomas. The Cobra Coaches dash went to Shawn Donath. - Crisafulli Earns First Empire Super Sprints Win at Brewerton
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | After a handful of strong runs in the month of August, including a podium last weekend at Autodrome Drummond, Logan Crisafulli has finally broken through to Empire Super Sprints victory lane. After setting Rifenburg Contracting quick time in his timed hot lap group and drawing the Pinnacle Pole, Jonathan Preston led the field to the initial green flag, but it was outside pole sitter Trevor Years who would lead the first two laps. Preston was able to get by Years to take the lead on lap three, where he would stay for the next handful of laps. Lap 9 saw Dalton Rombough inherit the lead from Preston, with 7th starting Logan Crisafulli hot on his heels in second. After stalking Rombough for 5 laps, Crisafulli was able to sneak by him for the lead on lap 15. While perennial Brewerton favorites Larry Wight and Danny Varin were chasing Crisafulli, they weren't able to get past the driver of the #36 and he was able to hang on for his first Empire Super Sprints victory. "Theres not a whole lot of brown down there (on the bottom)," said Crisafulli in victory lane. "I knew it worked, so I had to try it, and it continued to work if I hit my marks." "I knew I could at lead come side by side with the guys behind me out of the corner, so I knew that if they were able to get by me on the high side, I could at least try something different." Larry Wight came from the 12th starting spot to finish second. "I just tried to hit my marks, hit my marks," said Wight. "The bottom was fast, but you had to hit it right. If you missed it a little bit then you'd be spinning off, but if you could keep the car straight you could use a little throttle." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin. "I just think we were too good way to early," said Varin. "Great job by them (Crisafulli), they've been fast the last couple of races, just ran out of time." With 27 cars pit side for the first of three nights of action on the Labor Day triple header weekend, the field was broken into three timed hot lap groups to start the evening. Jonathan Preston, Jordan Thomas and Sammy Reakes IV earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in their respective groups, while Davie Franek, Larry Wight and Sammy Reakes IV picked up E&V Energy heat race wins. Joe Trenca won the Cobra Coaches dash, and Chris Hile picked up the victory in the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. - Labor Day Triple Header on the Horizon for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | After a busy month of August, the Empire Super Sprints are ready to close out August and bring in September with a Labor Day weekend triple header. Starting on Friday, August 30 at the Brewerton Speedway, moving to the Fulton Speedway the following night and rounding out the weekend at the Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday, September 1, the tour will have three straight nights of action with each night paying $2,000 to the winner. In two previous stops this season at the track dubbed the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon', Danny Varin and Jason Barney have found Brewerton Speedway victory lane. Varin's Don Gillette Memorial victory was his sixth win overall at the Speedway, tying Mal Lane for most ESS wins at the track. Barney's win was just his sixth at his hometown track, and first since May of 2019. The tour has also visited the Fulton Speedway twice thus far in 2024, with Jason Barney opening the 2024 season with a victory back in April - his fourth in two years at Fulton. Davie Frank also picked up a win at Fulton in July, scoring his second of three tour victories so far in 2024. Keeping with the theme of two visits thus far in 2024, two main events have also been held at Utica-Rome to this point in the season. NASCAR Truck Series competitor Stewart Friesen scored the win at Utica-Rome's CNY Speedweek stop on July 4, while less than two weeks ago Billy VanInwegen picked up $5,000 at the Vernon, NY oval in the Cole Cup. With the season starting to wind down as the temperatures start to drop into early fall, two time and defending tour champion Jordan Poirier still sits atop the points standings with 1684 points, now starting to pull away from second place Davie Franek after his victory this past weekend in Quebec. Franek is 132 points behind Poirier with 1552, and Jason Barney sits third with 1543 points, just nine points behind Franek. For a full listing of gate times, admission prices and a nightly schedule of events for each race this weekend, be sure to visit each tracks social media pages and website, along with the Empire Super Sprints social media pages as they will be posted when available.
