- ESS Points Set to Conclude at Fulton Friday
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | A points champion will be crowned this Friday night with the Empire Super Sprints at the Fulton Speedway. With the final points event of 2024 on tap as part of the annual 'Outlaw 200' weekend, both the tour championship and the $2,000 winners share of the event are on the line. Currently atop the points standings is Jordan Poirier, with 2,028 points. The two time and defending champion has been a model of consistency all year long. While only tallying one win to this point (Autodrome Drummond), he has completed an impressive 500 laps of feature action in 20 starts - meaning he has finished on the lead lap at every single event. In addition, he has only finished outside of the top 10 once - further solidifying his spot at the top of the standings. Early season points leader Jason Barney is currently second with 1,911 points. He has three victories (Fulton, Brewerton, Granby) and 18 top 10's to his credit, putting him 85 points ahead of current third place holder Davie Franek. While Franek also has perfect attendance and also has the most wins out of any driver in the top 5 in points with four (Freedom, Fulton, Brockville, Outlaw), he has just 13 top-10 finishes in his 20 starts. Rounding out the top 5 in points headed into Fulton is Matt Tanner in fourth (1,734 points) and Billy VanInwegen in fifth (1,546 points). In the three events held at the Fulton Speedway thus far in 2024, Jason Barney, Davie Franek and Joe Trenca have all picked up victories. For a full schedule of events for this weekends action, along with admission pricing and gate times, be sure to check out both the Fulton Speedway website and Facebook page, along with the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. After the points wrap up at Fulton on Friday, there is one more non-points event on the 2024 ESS calendar - the annual Hoag Memorial at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY on Friday October 18 paying $4,000 to win. - Franek Victorious in ESS Outlaw Fall Nationals
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | For the fourth time in 2024, Davie Franek sat in Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Friday night. After leading just the final three laps, Franek was able to cash in and take home the big check in the Outlaw Fall Nationals at Outlaw Speedway. Pinnacle Pole Sitter Matt Farnham and Shawn Donath brought the field to the green flag for the 25-lap affair, with Farnham taking the early lead over Donath, Matt Tanner and Davie Franek. While Farnham and Donath had opened a sizeable gap over the rest of the field, fifth-starting Jason Barney quickly worked his way into the top three utilizing the extreme low side of the speedway. When the leaders reached lap traffic, however, Barney was able to close the gap and moved past Donath into second. Just two laps later, Barney continued his march forward and took the lead from Farnham. A caution on lap 16 led to a hectic restart, as Donath got sideways between turns one and two. Somehow the driver of the #53 was able to avoid catastrophe and gathered it back together, only losing two spots in the process. Another restart with just four laps to go again bunched up the field, and working the extreme high side of the Speedway, second running Davie Franek got by Barney with just three laps remaining and never looked back, adding another win at the Outlaw Speedway to his resume. "There was a little thin curb up there," said Franek in victory lane. "I really didn't want to show him (Barney) my nose because I didn't want him to move up." "On the restart there he knew I was on the outside and he kind of crowded me a little bit, but that's what you gotta do. I had to match with him in the middle of three and four - I just hit the curb enough where I got a little drive, and the rest was history." Coming home second was Donath, who recovered well from his mid-race setback. "On that restart I thought Jason was going to slide across and try to pinch me on the top there, and he didn't move up and I had nowhere to go," said Donath. "We were able to recover, the track was super racey and we were pretty good wherever we went." After leading 10 laps, Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "Thankful to be down here, the racetrack was good, we had good track position," said Barney. "Early in the race, the bottom was good and really no one was there. I thought we had enough racecar to win but obviously we didn't." "When you're leading you don't really know what to do, where to go. He (Franek) did a good job. That one stings a little bit but happy to be third." The field was split into three timed hot lap groups to start the night, with Matt Tanner, Jared Zimbardi and Davie Franek earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in their respective groups. E&V Energy heat wins went to Jordan Poirier, Jason Barney and Matt Farnham, while the Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Fratto Curbing was won by Jeff Halligan. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Friday October 4th at the Fulton Speedway in Fulton, NY as part of the annual Outlaw 200 weekend. - Outlaw Fall Nationals Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | As the 2024 season winds down for the Empire Super Sprints, there are just two points events remaining on the schedule. This coming Friday, September 20 is the first, with the annual 'Outlaw Fall Nationals' on deck. Paying tribute to the late Cal Lane, the Outlaw Fall Nationals Cal Lane Memorial is set to pay $4,220 to the winner in the 25-lap main event. In the lone event held at the Outlaw Speedway in ESS action so far this season Matt Tanner was victorious, picking up the Outlaw Summer Nationals. One other stop was scheduled for the tour back in April, but Mother Nature had other plans as the event was cancelled due to rain. Atop the tour championship standings once again sits two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier. With 1926 points, Poirier holds a 127-point margin over Jason Barney in second. Though he only has one tour victory to this point in the season, Poirier has been a model of consistency with 11 top 5's and 18 top 10's in 20 points-paying starts. Currently third in the standings is Davie Franek with 1699 points, and just 33 points behind him is Matt Tanner in fourth. Four-time winner in 2024 Danny Varin rounds out the top five. All gate times, admission prices and a nightly schedule of events for this Friday's event at the Outlaw Speedway can be found on the track's social media pages and website, along with the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. - Jordan Thomas Gets Redemption at Weedsport
By Curtis Berleue (Weedsport, NY) | After a heartbreaking mistake while leading on the last lap the last time the Empire Super Sprints were in town back in July, Jordan Thomas was hungry for redemption as the tour returned for the finale of the 'Cavalcade Cup'. And get redemption he did, as he led the final 15 laps en-route to a $2,000 victory. Logan Crisafulli and Scott Kreuter would lead the field to the green flag, with Crisafulli taking the early lead down the backstretch. Kreutter followed in second, but Jordan Thomas slipped by him before the flag stand to take over the runner-up spot. With 5 laps complete, the lead duo of Crisafulli and Thomas had opened a significant gap over the rest of the field. Joe Trenca was solidly in third, with Kreutter and Matt Tanner racing for the fourth position. As Crisafulli worked his way through lap traffic on lap 10, Thomas used that to his advantage and was able to pull right to the tail tank of the #36. Switching his line from high to low, Thomas slid Crisafulli going into turn 3, and exited turn 4 with the lead, leading lap 12. Working the high side of the speedway, Thomas was able to masterfully work lap traffic and extend his lead over Crisafulli. Behind Crisafulli, Larry Wight had climbed to fourth and was trying everything he could to get by the #98 of Trenca. On lap 20, Wight slid Trenca in turns 3 and 4, but Trenca was able to cross him over and defend third for the time being. With a clear track ahead of him, Thomas crossed under the checkers first, earning his first victory of the season. "The car was really good, it was a really technical track tonight," said Thomas. "It really slicked up compared to what we had in the July race." "It feels good to get the win, we've got a big week of us headed into Ohsweken, a lot of money on the line and we run pretty good up there, hopefully we can bring home some money." Logan Crisafulli continued the momentum he has built over the second half of the season and racked up another podium finish, coming in second behind Thomas. "I was kind of hoping lap traffic would help me a little bit there," said Crisafulli. "He had a fast car all night though, so I'm just glad to be up here. This car has been awesome lately, hats off to my team." At the line, Larry Wight slipped by Joe Trenca to round out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. "I just needed a caution to regroup everyone," said Wight. "I think we definitely had a second-place car, I couldn't see the 79 to see where he was, I figure he was probably ripping the lip though." "This is the second race on this car, and it hasn't finished off the podium yet so we're happy with it." With 30 cars in the pits for the final night of the Cavalcade Cup weekend, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Jordan Poirier, Kelsey Ivy and Matt Tanner. E&V Energy heat race wins went to Larry Wight, Chris Hile and Matt Tanner, while the Kinney's Kar Kare Dash was won by Chase Moran. Davie Franek won the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is the Northern Sprint Car Nationals at the Ohsweken Speedway for a non-points event. The tour's next full points event will be on Friday September 20 at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY for the $4,000 to win Outlaw Fall Nationals. - ESS Point Battle Heats Up Heading to Can-Am, Weedsport
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | With just four full-point events remaining on the 2024 Empire Super Sprints calendar, the battle at the top of the point standings is as alive as ever. With another doubleheader weekend on tap at the Can-Am and Weedsport Speedways, drivers have two more chances at making headway in the final stretch of the season. Since early July, two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier has been atop the standings, though recently early season points leader Jason Barney has climbed back into the second spot. With 1830 points, Poirier holds a 111-point lead over Barney with 1719 points. With a strong podium finish this past Saturday at Fulton, Barney was able to gain ground on Poirier, who had a 132-point cushion before the weekend began. Davie Franek currently sits third in points with 1651, Matt Tanner is fourth with 1564 and Billy VanInwegen rounds out the top five with 1441. The most recent Empire Super Sprints winner at Can-Am is Billy VanInwegen who was victorious when the tour visited last month on August second. Jordan Poirier has also been strong at Can-Am, finishing third back in August and picking up the win at the speedway as part of last years CNY Speedweek. Saturdays stop at the LaFargeville, NY oval will be critical for both drivers in the standings race. As the tour moves south to Weedsport on Sunday, it's anyone's guess as to how the points standings will be affected. Only one driver currently in the top five in points has a victory at the 3/8-mile oval, Jason Barney, though his victory came just over nine years ago in August of 2015. More information on this weekends events including gate times and prices, along with an order of events can be found on either tracks social media pages, along with the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. - Joe Trenca Victorious at Fulton Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | Continuing the trend of new faces in victory lane, Joe Trenca picked up the win on Saturday night with the Empire Super Sprints at the Fulton Speedway. After riding in second for the majority of the event, he passed Johnny Smith for the lead with two laps to go to secure his first win of 2024 with the Tour. After drawing the Pinnacle Pole Award, Johnny Smith jumped out to the early lead over outside polesitter Joe Trenca. The lead duo would remain that way for the majority of the event. While Smith and Trenca paced the field, the show was behind them as both Jason Barney and Billy VanInwegen started mid pack and were meticulously working their way through the field. Having started 14th, Barney had worked his way permanently into the top 10 by lap 5, and on lap 11 had begun to pick off cars lap by lap, moving into the top 5 with just 3 laps remaining. VanInwegen was writing a similar story, having started 8th, he worked his way into fifth by lap 3 and then up to fourth on lap 13. With just two laps to go, Trenca was able to get by Smith, who had led the entire race up until that point and lead the final laps to pick up his first victory of 2024. "I could run the bottom, and I knew my pace was really good but the lap cars didn't work out," said Trenca. "We ran each other clean and we got the win." "He (Smith) could have shut the door on me hard there and he raced me clean. I was really good through the middle, I could use the wing to try to capitalized on that (slidejob) and we did it." Johnny Smith was able to hold on for the runner-up position. "Halfway through the race we lost brakes, and I knew I was getting held up by lap traffic," said Smith. "He (Trenca) did a phenomenal job and I knew that if we got another yellow then I was going to be out of luck - I'm really happy to come home second." Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We have enough race car, enough crew and enough engine, the driver just doesn't always do the right things and do his job the best that he can," said Barney. "Last night was disappointing, we just moved forward to tonight. We felt like we learned some things, or at least did some things we know worked instead of doing things that don't." The field was split into three timed hot lap groups at the beginning of the night, with Billy VanInwegen, Logan Crisafulli and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jordan Poirier, Sammy Reakes IV and Jordan Thomas. The Cobra Coaches dash went to Shawn Donath. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Sunday September 1st at the Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY. - Crisafulli Earns First Empire Super Sprints Win at Brewerton
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | After a handful of strong runs in the month of August, including a podium last weekend at Autodrome Drummond, Logan Crisafulli has finally broken through to Empire Super Sprints victory lane. After setting Rifenburg Contracting quick time in his timed hot lap group and drawing the Pinnacle Pole, Jonathan Preston led the field to the initial green flag, but it was outside pole sitter Trevor Years who would lead the first two laps. Preston was able to get by Years to take the lead on lap three, where he would stay for the next handful of laps. Lap 9 saw Dalton Rombough inherit the lead from Preston, with 7th starting Logan Crisafulli hot on his heels in second. After stalking Rombough for 5 laps, Crisafulli was able to sneak by him for the lead on lap 15. While perennial Brewerton favorites Larry Wight and Danny Varin were chasing Crisafulli, they weren't able to get past the driver of the #36 and he was able to hang on for his first Empire Super Sprints victory. "Theres not a whole lot of brown down there (on the bottom)," said Crisafulli in victory lane. "I knew it worked, so I had to try it, and it continued to work if I hit my marks." "I knew I could at lead come side by side with the guys behind me out of the corner, so I knew that if they were able to get by me on the high side, I could at least try something different." Larry Wight came from the 12th starting spot to finish second. "I just tried to hit my marks, hit my marks," said Wight. "The bottom was fast, but you had to hit it right. If you missed it a little bit then you'd be spinning off, but if you could keep the car straight you could use a little throttle." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin. "I just think we were too good way to early," said Varin. "Great job by them (Crisafulli), they've been fast the last couple of races, just ran out of time." With 27 cars pit side for the first of three nights of action on the Labor Day triple header weekend, the field was broken into three timed hot lap groups to start the evening. Jonathan Preston, Jordan Thomas and Sammy Reakes IV earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in their respective groups, while Davie Franek, Larry Wight and Sammy Reakes IV picked up E&V Energy heat race wins. Joe Trenca won the Cobra Coaches dash, and Chris Hile picked up the victory in the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. - Labor Day Triple Header on the Horizon for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | After a busy month of August, the Empire Super Sprints are ready to close out August and bring in September with a Labor Day weekend triple header. Starting on Friday, August 30 at the Brewerton Speedway, moving to the Fulton Speedway the following night and rounding out the weekend at the Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday, September 1, the tour will have three straight nights of action with each night paying $2,000 to the winner. In two previous stops this season at the track dubbed the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon', Danny Varin and Jason Barney have found Brewerton Speedway victory lane. Varin's Don Gillette Memorial victory was his sixth win overall at the Speedway, tying Mal Lane for most ESS wins at the track. Barney's win was just his sixth at his hometown track, and first since May of 2019. The tour has also visited the Fulton Speedway twice thus far in 2024, with Jason Barney opening the 2024 season with a victory back in April - his fourth in two years at Fulton. Davie Frank also picked up a win at Fulton in July, scoring his second of three tour victories so far in 2024. Keeping with the theme of two visits thus far in 2024, two main events have also been held at Utica-Rome to this point in the season. NASCAR Truck Series competitor Stewart Friesen scored the win at Utica-Rome's CNY Speedweek stop on July 4, while less than two weeks ago Billy VanInwegen picked up $5,000 at the Vernon, NY oval in the Cole Cup. With the season starting to wind down as the temperatures start to drop into early fall, two time and defending tour champion Jordan Poirier still sits atop the points standings with 1684 points, now starting to pull away from second place Davie Franek after his victory this past weekend in Quebec. Franek is 132 points behind Poirier with 1552, and Jason Barney sits third with 1543 points, just nine points behind Franek. For a full listing of gate times, admission prices and a nightly schedule of events for each race this weekend, be sure to visit each tracks social media pages and website, along with the Empire Super Sprints social media pages as they will be posted when available. - ESS Heads to Quebec for Pair of $3,000 to Win Events at Granby and Drummond
By Curtis Berleue (Granby, QC) | Each year, the Empire Super Sprints make an annual pilgrimage far north to the province of Quebec. 2024 is no different, as this weekend the stars of the Empire Super Sprints will invade Autodrome Granby on Friday August 23 and Autodrome Drummond on Saturday August 24. Last season, Jeff Cook sat in victory lane at Autodrome Granby, marking what is likely his final ESS victory. At Autodrome Drummond last season, Matt Tanner was victorious when he picked up his second win of the season. Headed into this weekends Quebec swing, there are nine points-paying events left on the Empire Super Sprints schedule. Two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier is once again atop the standings. While Poirier has yet to sit in victory lane in 2024, he has been a model of consistency having not finished outside of the top 10 in any event so far this season. Second in points is New Jersey's Davie Franek, just 17 points back from Poirier. Franek has three victories on the season thus far (Freedom, Fulton and Brockville), and will look to close the gap even further this weekend. Third in points is Jason Barney, 91 points back from Franek, Matt Tanner sits fourth in points and Billy VanInwegen rounds out the top five. For this weekend's events at Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond, be sure to check both the tracks and ESS social media pages for information regarding gate times and prices, along with a nightly order of events. - VanInwegen Pockets $5,000 for Cole Cup Victory at Utica Rome
By Curtis Berleue (Vernon, NY) | After breaking into victory lane a few weeks ago, Billy VanInwegen became a repeat winner in 2024 with the Empire Super Sprints on Saturday. Earning $5,000 for his victory, VanInwegen joined a short list of drivers who have gone to victory lane in the Cole Cup. As Matt Farnham and Danny Varin brough the field to the initial green flag, it was Farnham who took the early advantage down the backstretch. His lead was short lived, however, as Varin slid him going into turn 3 and would be officially credited with the lap. A caution on lap two slowed the field, and on the ensuing restart Farnham got took the lead using the high side to his advantage. Unfortunately for Farnham, however, the caution flew again before a lap was completed undoing his efforts yet again. By virtue of a caution directly following a restart, the field lined up single file for the restart, and this time Varin was able to open up a lead over Farnham. Behind the lead duo, Jonathan Preston followed comfortably in third, with Jordan Thomas and Billy VanInwegen battling for the fourth position. By lap 12, VanInwegen had gotten by Thomas for fourth. Using a double file restart to his advantage, he then moved past both Preston and Farnham just one lap later to take second. Behind Varin and VanInwegen, Davie Franek had been quietly working his way through the field from his 9th starting position. With 6 laps to go, Franek moved into a podium position, getting by Farnham for third. Misfortune struck on lap 19 for Varin, as he ran out of fuel as the red flag came out for Joe Kata who had flipped in turns one and two. As such, each driver moved up one position as he relinquished the lead, making VanInwegen the leader with Franek in second and Farnham in third. With three laps to go Jordan Poirier slid Farnham for third, but the leaders were too far gone. As the field crossed the checkered, it was VanInwegen picking up the win. "There was nothing comfortable about that last lap," said VanInwegen in victory lane. "I ran out of fuel with about a lap or a lap and a quarter to go, it was spitting and sputtering." "We had a really good car from the drop of the green, any time we could make up a little ground it seemed like the yellow would come out and put us back. A lot of guys ran out of fuel, we did too, we just had enough to get to the checkered." Crossing the line second was Davie Franek, coming all the way from the 6th row. "Our car was pretty decent, it's just tough starting 11th," said Franek. "You battle, battle, battle and by the time you get to the good guys up front your stuffs just about wore out." "We could have been a little better at the beginning of the race, we always struggle with that. We were neck and neck on that restart, but he (VanInwegen) did what he had to do, and those guys work hard at it so congratulations to them." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Jordan Poirier. "It feels super good to finish third," said Poirier. "At the beginning of the feature I didn't expect to be moving forward, but we were really good on restarts. I was good on the bottom, decent on the top and I could maneuver my car. Fourteenth to third, I can't complain about that." 25 cars signed in for the 2024 version of the Cole Cup, and as such the field was split into three timed hot lap sessions. Picking up Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards were Billy VanInwegen, Jordan Thomas and Sammy Reakes IV. E&V Energy heat wins went to Logan Crisafulli, Robbie Stillwaggon and Davie Franek, while the Cobra Coaches dash was won by Shawn Donath. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Friday August 23rd at the Autodrome Granby in Granby, Quebec, followed by Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec on Saturday August 24. - Franek Bags First ESS Win in Canada at Brockville Ontario
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ON) | For the first time since 2019, the Empire Super Sprints invaded the Brockville Ontario Speedway this Saturday night. At the end of the evening, it was 'No Panic' Davie Franek who was sitting in victory lane at the 3/8 mile oval. Starting from the Pinnacle Pole, Danny Varin took the early race lead over Davie Franek and Alex Therrien. A caution on lap 8 erased Varin's lead, and on the ensuing restart Franek was able to make his way past the #01 to take the lead. Through a few cautions, Franek was able to maintain his lead over the rest of the field. Behind Franek, Varin maintained second through the balance of the event, while Therrien and Billy VanInwegen would swap positions regularly while racing for the final podium spot. At the end of 25 laps, however, nobody had anything for the Wantage, NJ driver and Franek picked up his first Canadian Empire Super Sprints win of the season, and third tour win of 2024. "Last night we were really good late in the race," said Franek. "We kind of applied what we did last night to tonight." "Literally from the drop of the green, the car was good. Danny got out there a little bit the first five or six laps; I knew we were going to get to lap traffic, so I was just pacing myself. He kind of just slipped up on the restart." "If he went high, I was going low, and vice versa. Its my first win in Canada, so this is pretty bad ass." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin in second, and Alex Therrien in third. Jordan Poirier earned the A-Verdi Hard Charger award passing 6 cars to finish fourth, and Friday nights winner Billy VanInwegen completed the top five. With 18 cars in the pits, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Picking up Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards were Shawn Donath, Davie Franek and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat races were won by Matt Tanner, Davie Franek and Joe Trenca, and Logan Crisafulli won the Cobra Coaches dash. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday May 17th at the Utica Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY. - Billy VanInwegen Breaks Through at Can-Am
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | After a multiple podium finishes recently, Billy VanInwegen was finally able to break into Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Friday night at the Can-Am Speedway. Earning $2,000 for his efforts, it is VanInwegen's first win in the Paul Colagiovanni owned number 10v. Starting on the outside of the front row, Sammy Reakes IV jumped out to the early lead over Pinnacle Pole Award winner Matt Tanner. Fourth starting Billy VanInwegen quickly moved into third, before getting by Tanner for second just a few laps later. Continuing his march towards the front, VanInwegen would eventually take the lead from Reakes on lap 10. While VanInwegen set sail in front of the field, Davie Franek, who had started third and fell back as far as fifth, had begun again moving forward. As VanInwegen was taking the lead, Franek moved back into a podium position. 8 laps later, he got by Reakes for second. With just a handful of laps remaining, Franek was unable to catch 'Billy V', and VanInwegen crossed the line first, earning his first win of the season. "My guys worked their tails off all night, just like they do every time we unload," said VanInwegen. "This is huge, we're from down near Orange County, a whole different world than up here really. Hopefully we get to do a lot more racing up here in the next couple of weeks." Davie Franek came home second, just one spot shy of victory lane. "We were definitely coming there at the end," said Franek. "I wish there was a yellow, obviously there wasn't but my guys did a great job on the car all night. We have a good balance pretty much anywhere we go , so we're pretty excited to go to the race track right now." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third was Jordan Poirier. "The way our night started, we were way too tight in hot laps and heat race," said Poirier. "We threw something at it for the feature, we were a little bit tight at the beginning. I was just going to follow Davie and try some different lanes." "After I passed Sammy, the top was just dominate but it was too late to catch Davie." With 16 cars signed into the pits, the field was split into two timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek and Logan Crisafulli, while E&V Energy heat races were won by Davie Franek and Matt Tanner. The Cooks Family Diner dash was won by Shawn Donath. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday August 4th at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. - Can Am, Brockville Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | The month of August for the Empire Super Sprints will start out with the first visit of the year to both the Can-Am Speedway and Brockville Ontario Speedway. By this point in the season, both tracks had already hoped to have a visit from ESS in the books, however Mother Nature had other plans as both the tours scheduled visit to Brockville on June 22 and Can-Am on July 3 were rained out. When the stars of the Empire Super Sprints roll north this weekend, two-time champion and current points leader Jordan Poirier will be the one every driver has their sights on to beat as he is also the most recent winner at Can-Am, having won 2023's CNY Speedweek stop at the track. With last year's visit to Brockville also falling to rain, it's anyone's guess as to who could be sitting in victory lane at the 3/8 mile oval. The last time the tour made a stop there was in 2019, and the only active driver with a win at the track in ESS action is Jason Barney, with that win coming 7 years ago. While there are still 12 points-paying races left on the 2024 ESS schedule, the battle in the standings is starting to heat up. Defending champion Jordan Poirier currently sits atop the list with 1117 points, holding a slim 8-point lead over Jason Barney. Davie Franek is third with 1062 points, followed by Matt Tanner and Billy VanInwegen. All persons entering the pits on Saturday at Brockville should be reminded that a digital waiver must be signed per the tracks insurance, and no paper waiver will be available at the track. The waiver can be found at https://bos.speedwaiver.com . The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. - Zimbardi Leads Wire to Wire at Woodhull
By Curtis Berleue (Woodhull, NY) | For the second night in a row, it was a new face in victory lane in 2024 for the Empire Super Sprints, as Braford, PA's Jared Zimbardi picked up his first win of the season Saturday night at Woodhull. Almost exactly one year from his last ESS victory, it was Zimbardi's 6th ESS win and 51st career win. After drawing the number two starting spot, Zimbardi used the high side to his advantage on lap one to take the lead over Pinnacle Pole Award winner Kyle Drum. With 5 laps complete, it was still Zimbardi out front over Drum, with Jason Barney third, Shawn Donath 4th and Trevor Years fifth. On lap 6, Barney was able to sneak underneath of Drum coming off turn four to take the second position away. With much of the field using the high side of the track, Barney continued to creep the bottom in an attempt to chase down Zimbardi. Just one caution coming on lap 7 slowed the event, and on the ensuing restart Zimbardi again jumped out to the lead over Barney, with Drum in third. For the second night in a row, Billy VanInwegen was mounting a charge from deep in the field. Starting 10th, he had moved his way into the top five by lap 8. 5 laps later, he secured the fourth spot, and on lap 18 he slid into a podium spot in third. While Zimbardi navigated lap traffic, VanInwegen was relentlessly running the bottom in an attempt to catch Barney for second, and with two laps to go he slid by him. It was too little too late, however, as Zimbardi's half-second lead let him cross the line first. "It was tough to see coming down the backstretch, I wasn't sure but I knew he (Barney) was there," said Zimbardi. "I certainly didn't want to give him the bottom on that restart. You get a nice launch out of turn four, and if I could get him clear go to the top and if he didn't get by me off of two I knew I was good." "Keeping the momentum was tricky around the top, you just miss it by a little bit and you're off the racetrack. The last time I won here was in 2016, so we were long overdue." Finishing one spot better than the night before, Billy VanInwegen came home second, while Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. "I didn't feel good in the heat race, so we went to work and my guys kept making the car better for me," said VanInwegen. "These guys just have no quit in them and I'm super thankful." In two timed hot lap groups, Jared Zimbardi and Shawn Donath earned Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards, while Jordan Thomas and Trevor Years picked up E&V Energy heat wins. The Cobra Coaches dash presented by Mary Ennis was won by Davie Franek. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Friday, August 2nd at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, NY. - Tanner Claims $4,000 in ESS Outlaw Summer Nationals
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | For the first time in 2024, Matt Tanner was victorious in Empire Super Sprints Action at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY. Leading all 25 laps, the Stephentown, NY driver picked up $4,000 for his efforts on Friday night. Shawn Donath and Matt Tanner brought the field to the initial green flag. Utilizing the high side of the track, Tanner got the early advantage off turn four to lead lap one. Behind Tanner, third starting Jason Barney quickly moved into second, with Donath not far behind in third. By lap 5, Tanner still held the lead over Barney and Donath, while Jonathan Preston, Alex Therrien and Billy VanInwegen all battled for positions 4-6. On Lap 8, Tanner caught the back of the field and began navigating lap traffic. As Tanner and Barney sliced through the slower cars, VanInwegen used traffic to his advantage to take sole possession of third place. With the laps clicking by, it looked as though nobody had anything for Tanner. On lap 18, Donath was able to get by Barney for second using the extreme high side of the track, but it was smooth sailing for Tanner as he crossed the line for his first victory of the season. "At the beginning there I was a little nervous running around the top," said Tanner in victory lane. "Toward the end it felt like the top was going away, I tried the bottom and then it kinda cleaned off down there and I wasn't sure what to do at the end." Crossing the line second was Shawn Donath. "He (Tanner) was good early and it took a little bit for the tires to fire," said Donath. "We were just a little bit too late getting going." Coming from his 8th place starting spot, Billy VanInwegen rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We really had a good car, I thought with maybe a yellow around half way we could have had something," said VanInwegen. "We can't hang our heads with third, we're working hard at this deal and making strides for sure." 24 cars signed into the pit area Friday night, splitting the field into three timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Matt Farnham, Alex Therrien and Matt Tanner. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jared Zimbardi, Alex Therrien and Jordan Thomas, while the Cobra Coaches dash presented by Lanes Yamaha was won by Jordan Poirier. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Saturday July 27th at the Woodhull Raceway in Woodhull, NY. - Matt Tanner Wins Summer Nationals with ESS
Matt Tanner won the ninth edition of the Summer Nationals Friday night at Outlaw Speedway with the Empire Super Sprints.
- Empire Super Sprints Set to Close Out July at Outlaw Speedway & Woodhull Raceway
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | As the busiest month of the season winds down, the Empire Super Sprints are set to close out July this Friday and Saturday at the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway, respectively. Friday's stop at the Outlaw Speedway marks the first of what should have been four scheduled stops for the tour at the Dundee, NY oval (the scheduled event in April succumbed to Mother Nature). Sharing the card with the ULMS super late models, the stars of the Empire Super Sprints will compete for $4,000 to win in the annual 'Outlaw Summer Nationals'. Two events for the 360 sprint cars were held at Outlaw in 2023. 'The Juice' Jared Zimbardi broke into victory lane in this event one year ago, while Jordan Thomas is the most recent tour winner at Outlaw, having picked up the win at the 'Outlaw Fall Nationals' last September. Saturday's trip to the Woodhull Raceway will be just the 12th stop in tour history at the Steuben County facility. After a fourteen-year absence, it was Robbie Stillwaggon who sat in victory lane last year, winning over Shawn Donath and Jordan Poirier. Additional support for this weekend's Cobra Coaches Dash series comes from Lanes Yamaha, who will be presenting the dash on Friday night at Outlaw, and Mary Ennis presenting the dash Saturday at Woodhull. Going into this weekend, two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier currently holds the points lead by just 34 points over Davie Franek. 2017 & 2021 champion Jason Barney is currently third in points, with Danny Varin fourth and Matt Tanner rounding out the top five. A full order of events, along with gate times and admission prices for this weekend's events can be found on both the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway's social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints Facebook and X pages. - Danny Varin Continues Sprint Car Dominance at Fonda Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Fonda, NY) | For the 8th time in the last 9 trips to the Fonda Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints, it was Danny Varin sitting in victory lane at the end of the night. Leading 17 of 25 laps, Varin earned $2,000 for his victory Saturday night, which was also his third tour win in a row and fourth on the season. Josh Pieniazek and Billy VanInwegen brought the field to green, with Pieniazek taking the lead off of turn two. That lead was short lived, however, as VanInwegen fought back on the outside in turns three and four to lead lap one. A red flag for an incident in turn one on lap one put Pieniazek and VanInwegen side-by-side again on the ensuing restart, though this time it was Pieniazek who jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin made quick work of VanInwegen and moved into the second spot with two laps down. For the next handful of laps, Varin stalked the #9 of Pieniazek, searching around the track for a little more speed. Working the bottom on lap 8, Varin was able to get alongside Pieniazek entering turn 3 and by the time the duo reached the flag stand, Varin was in sole possession of the lead. With Varin checked out on the field, VanInwegen continued working on finding his way around Pieniazek for second place, and was successful on lap 15. Just one lap later, Jordan Thomas would also find his way by Pieniazek and take over third. For the second time in two nights, Varin had completely checked out on the field and crossed the finish line first uncontested with a 6 second margin of victory. "I tell you what, my arms are ready to fall off," said Varin. "What a fun race track. It was touch and go on the bottom, but man that was fast." "This team has been firing on all cylinders. We feel really good, 87 Speed has got us really rolling. These guys are making all of the right adjustments in the pits. It's easy to dial yourself out, but right now these guys are doing a really good job." Billy VanInwegen brought his #10V machine home in second place. "Danny has dominated this place for so many years, so to run second to him, we can't hang our head about that," said VanInwegen. "I really wish we could have closed that one out, I think we had a great race car tonight." Finishing third was Harding, Pennsylvania's Jordan Thomas. "We've been pretty fast the last couple of weeks, Speedweek we were fast every night," said Thomas. "Luck didn't go our way that week, and here we are again, last night we were fast, and again tonight." "I think it would have been tonight to make any moves, Danny's so fast and everyone kinda has this place figured out." The field was split into two timed hot lap groups to start the night, with Jordan Thomas and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Fast Time awards. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jordan Thomas and Davie Franek, while Kyle Smith won the One Zee Tees dash. - Danny Varin Gets It Done at Albany-Saratoga
By Curtis Berleue (Malta, NY) | As the summer months keep rolling on, Danny Varin keeps getting hotter and hotter, earning his second Empire Super Sprints victory in a row and third of the 2024 season on Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Emily VanInwegen and Shawn Donath would bring the field to green, with Donath using the outside to his advantage and leading lap one. As the lap counter clicked lap 5, it was still Donath out in front, with Jordan Poirier in second and Billy VanInwegen in third. By lap 7. Donath had caught the tail of the field and began to work lap traffic with Poirier hot on his heels. A caution on lap 11 for leader Shawn Donath with mechanical issues handed the lead to Poirier. On the ensuing restart Poirier jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin, who had restarted in 6th, got a huge run off turn 2 and by the time he reached turn 3 was in second. The next lap, Varin threw a slide job on Poirier, took the lead and began to check out from the rest of the field. With 5 laps to go, the battle for third began to heat up between Davie Franek and Jason Barney. Barney was able to clear Franek, but just one lap later Matt Tanner slipped past Barney and set his sights on second place running Poirier. With a lap to go, Tanner got by Poirier for second, but it was Varin who crossed the finish line first, by a margin of just over 4 seconds. "What a phenomenal racetrack," said Varin. "That was elbows up, pounding the cushion, slidejob city. We've been leading five features here, and never finished one. This has been a long one coming." "That cushion was treacherous, you try to run it hard but you knew you could jump it, and be over it. You had to be patient, you're leading, and let someone show you their nose before you put everything out there." Matt Tanner crossed the line in second after a last lap pass on Jordan Poirier. "We were pretty bad all night, the guys just kept plugging away at it there," said Tanner. "Even the first 15 laps of this race we weren't that good. Three seconds in a row is starting to get old, but at least we're in the hunt." After spending much of the race running second, Jordan Poirier rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We weren't too good early on, after that yellow the first two laps I was good and then I started getting loose in three and four," said Poirier. "I tried to venture out, I tried to find some other lane and I just couldn't do anything. By the end, I was just trying to block and do something. We're just a tiny bit off or something." 22 cars signed into the pits for action on the night. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Jordan Thomas, Danny Varin and Jordan Poirier. Matt Tanner, Danny Varin and Davie Franek picked up E&V Energy heat race wins, while Dale Gosselin won the We Know Tools - Paul Wehnau Snap-on dash. - Varin Wins Battle, Poirier Wins War in ESS CNY Speedweek Finale at Weedsport
By Curtis Berleue (Weedsport, NY) | After a grueling week of action at tracks across NY state, the 2024 version of the Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweek concluded Sunday night at the Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY. Sitting atop victory hill when the dust settled was Danny Varin, $2,500 richer for his efforts. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Jordan Thomas brought the field to the green flag and jumped out to an early lead over Matt Tanner and Jonathan Preston. Working the extreme high side of the track, the lead trio caught lap traffic on lap 8, and Thomas was able to extend his lead navigating the slower cars with ease. By lap 12, he had extended his advantage over Matt Tanner to nearly half a track. As the laps wound down, however, Thomas' early lead had vanished, and while battling for position with Matt Tanner, his night would end in the fourth turn wall on the last lap. The ensuing restart set up a one-lap duel between Tanner and Varin, with Varin emerging victorious. "At the end, I was going to put it in the fence or try to win it," said Varin. "We just had to pull that wing forward and give it everything we had there for the lap and it paid off." "We got about an hour's worth of sleep last night; drove all the way back to Fonda, pulled two motors out, put one back in - it was just a huge effort and I couldn't do it without this whole team." Matt Tanner would cross the line in second, and Jonathan Preston rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. 34 winged warriors signed in for action on the final night of CNY Speedweek, splitting the field into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Cory Turner, Jordan Thomas, Danny Varin and Larry wight. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier, Danny Varin and Larry Wight. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main went to Kelly Hebing, while Johnny Smith won The Wildcat dash. After one rainout and four straight nights of action, Jordan Poirier was crowned the 2024 CNY Speedweek champion. The St. Mathieu de Beloeil, Quebec driver was consistent all week, with a second-place finish at Utica-Rome, third at Brewerton, sixth at Fulton and fourth at Weedsport to round out the week. Davie Franek finished the week second in points, followed by Jason Barney in third, Danny Varin and Matt Tanner to round out the top five. - Franek Flies to Fulton Victory Lane
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | For the second time in 2024, 'No Panic' Davie Franek found himself in victory lane on Saturday night with the Empire Super Sprints. Earning $2,500 for his efforts, the New Jersey native took the lead on lap 5 and never looked back. Starting on the Pinnacle Pole, Franek fell into second place early behind outside polesitter Shawn Donath. On lap 5, Franek was able to slip by on Donath to take the lead. While running second, troubles with the ignition on lap 11 resulted in a DNF for the #53 of Donath, which handed over the runner up position to Matt Tanner. With everyone moving up a position as a result, that meant Billy VanInwegen would take over the final podium position moving into third, where he spent the next handful of laps. Meanwhile, eventual A-Verdi Storage Containers hard charger award recipient Jason Barney was working his way through the pack. Starting in 25th position after getting upside down in his heat race and more misfortune in the B-Main, Barney passed 22 cars, the final being VanInwegen on lap 23 to slip into third. Nobody had anything for Franek, however, as he crossed the checkers first with just shy of a 3.5 second advantage on lap 25. "Restarts were definitely not good for me tonight," said Franek in victory lane. "Obviously I got the lead there, but it was tough in the cockpit, the motor stumbled a little bit and really didn't have the car the way we wanted. Its just great to be standing here." Matt Tanner was able to hold on for second, while Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. Billy VanInwegen was fourth, and Johnny Smith completed the top five. 32 cars lined the pits for the 4th night of the 2024 CNY Speedweek, with the field being split into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek, Johnny Smith, Ryan Coniam and Danny Varin. E&V Energy heat race winners were Matt Tanner, Jordan Poirier, Billy VanInwegen and Shawn Donath. The East Coast Sealcoat dash was won by Jordan Thomas, while Robbie Stillwaggon picked up the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is Sunday, July 7th at the Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY.
