- Empire Super Sprints Set to Close Out July at Outlaw Speedway & Woodhull Raceway
By Curtis Berleue (Dundee, NY) | As the busiest month of the season winds down, the Empire Super Sprints are set to close out July this Friday and Saturday at the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway, respectively. Friday's stop at the Outlaw Speedway marks the first of what should have been four scheduled stops for the tour at the Dundee, NY oval (the scheduled event in April succumbed to Mother Nature). Sharing the card with the ULMS super late models, the stars of the Empire Super Sprints will compete for $4,000 to win in the annual 'Outlaw Summer Nationals'. Two events for the 360 sprint cars were held at Outlaw in 2023. 'The Juice' Jared Zimbardi broke into victory lane in this event one year ago, while Jordan Thomas is the most recent tour winner at Outlaw, having picked up the win at the 'Outlaw Fall Nationals' last September. Saturday's trip to the Woodhull Raceway will be just the 12th stop in tour history at the Steuben County facility. After a fourteen-year absence, it was Robbie Stillwaggon who sat in victory lane last year, winning over Shawn Donath and Jordan Poirier. Additional support for this weekend's Cobra Coaches Dash series comes from Lanes Yamaha, who will be presenting the dash on Friday night at Outlaw, and Mary Ennis presenting the dash Saturday at Woodhull. Going into this weekend, two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier currently holds the points lead by just 34 points over Davie Franek. 2017 & 2021 champion Jason Barney is currently third in points, with Danny Varin fourth and Matt Tanner rounding out the top five. A full order of events, along with gate times and admission prices for this weekend's events can be found on both the Outlaw Speedway and Woodhull Raceway's social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints Facebook and X pages. For the latest news, information, and schedule updates regarding the Empire Super Sprints be sure to check the series website (www.EmpireSuperSprints.com) and follow along on Facebook (Empire Super Sprints), X (formerly Twitter - @ESSprints) and Instagram (@empiresupersprints). The ESS Road Ahead: Friday, July 26 - Outlaw Speedway - Dundee, NY ($4,000 to Win Outlaw Summer Nationals) Saturday, July 27 - Woodhull Raceway - Woodhull, NY ($2,000 to Win) Friday, August 2 - Can-Am Speedway - LaFargeville, NY ($2,000 to Win)
- Danny Varin Continues Sprint Car Dominance at Fonda Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Fonda, NY) | For the 8th time in the last 9 trips to the Fonda Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints, it was Danny Varin sitting in victory lane at the end of the night. Leading 17 of 25 laps, Varin earned $2,000 for his victory Saturday night, which was also his third tour win in a row and fourth on the season. Josh Pieniazek and Billy VanInwegen brought the field to green, with Pieniazek taking the lead off of turn two. That lead was short lived, however, as VanInwegen fought back on the outside in turns three and four to lead lap one. A red flag for an incident in turn one on lap one put Pieniazek and VanInwegen side-by-side again on the ensuing restart, though this time it was Pieniazek who jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin made quick work of VanInwegen and moved into the second spot with two laps down. For the next handful of laps, Varin stalked the #9 of Pieniazek, searching around the track for a little more speed. Working the bottom on lap 8, Varin was able to get alongside Pieniazek entering turn 3 and by the time the duo reached the flag stand, Varin was in sole possession of the lead. With Varin checked out on the field, VanInwegen continued working on finding his way around Pieniazek for second place, and was successful on lap 15. Just one lap later, Jordan Thomas would also find his way by Pieniazek and take over third. For the second time in two nights, Varin had completely checked out on the field and crossed the finish line first uncontested with a 6 second margin of victory. "I tell you what, my arms are ready to fall off," said Varin. "What a fun race track. It was touch and go on the bottom, but man that was fast." "This team has been firing on all cylinders. We feel really good, 87 Speed has got us really rolling. These guys are making all of the right adjustments in the pits. It's easy to dial yourself out, but right now these guys are doing a really good job." Billy VanInwegen brought his #10V machine home in second place. "Danny has dominated this place for so many years, so to run second to him, we can't hang our head about that," said VanInwegen. "I really wish we could have closed that one out, I think we had a great race car tonight." Finishing third was Harding, Pennsylvania's Jordan Thomas. "We've been pretty fast the last couple of weeks, Speedweek we were fast every night," said Thomas. "Luck didn't go our way that week, and here we are again, last night we were fast, and again tonight." "I think it would have been tonight to make any moves, Danny's so fast and everyone kinda has this place figured out." The field was split into two timed hot lap groups to start the night, with Jordan Thomas and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Fast Time awards. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jordan Thomas and Davie Franek, while Kyle Smith won the One Zee Tees dash. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Friday July 26th at the Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY. - Danny Varin Gets It Done at Albany-Saratoga
By Curtis Berleue (Malta, NY) | As the summer months keep rolling on, Danny Varin keeps getting hotter and hotter, earning his second Empire Super Sprints victory in a row and third of the 2024 season on Friday night at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Emily VanInwegen and Shawn Donath would bring the field to green, with Donath using the outside to his advantage and leading lap one. As the lap counter clicked lap 5, it was still Donath out in front, with Jordan Poirier in second and Billy VanInwegen in third. By lap 7. Donath had caught the tail of the field and began to work lap traffic with Poirier hot on his heels. A caution on lap 11 for leader Shawn Donath with mechanical issues handed the lead to Poirier. On the ensuing restart Poirier jumped out to the lead. Danny Varin, who had restarted in 6th, got a huge run off turn 2 and by the time he reached turn 3 was in second. The next lap, Varin threw a slide job on Poirier, took the lead and began to check out from the rest of the field. With 5 laps to go, the battle for third began to heat up between Davie Franek and Jason Barney. Barney was able to clear Franek, but just one lap later Matt Tanner slipped past Barney and set his sights on second place running Poirier. With a lap to go, Tanner got by Poirier for second, but it was Varin who crossed the finish line first, by a margin of just over 4 seconds. "What a phenomenal racetrack," said Varin. "That was elbows up, pounding the cushion, slidejob city. We've been leading five features here, and never finished one. This has been a long one coming." "That cushion was treacherous, you try to run it hard but you knew you could jump it, and be over it. You had to be patient, you're leading, and let someone show you their nose before you put everything out there." Matt Tanner crossed the line in second after a last lap pass on Jordan Poirier. "We were pretty bad all night, the guys just kept plugging away at it there," said Tanner. "Even the first 15 laps of this race we weren't that good. Three seconds in a row is starting to get old, but at least we're in the hunt." After spending much of the race running second, Jordan Poirier rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. "We weren't too good early on, after that yellow the first two laps I was good and then I started getting loose in three and four," said Poirier. "I tried to venture out, I tried to find some other lane and I just couldn't do anything. By the end, I was just trying to block and do something. We're just a tiny bit off or something." 22 cars signed into the pits for action on the night. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Jordan Thomas, Danny Varin and Jordan Poirier. Matt Tanner, Danny Varin and Davie Franek picked up E&V Energy heat race wins, while Dale Gosselin won the We Know Tools - Paul Wehnau Snap-on dash. - Varin Wins Battle, Poirier Wins War in ESS CNY Speedweek Finale at Weedsport
By Curtis Berleue (Weedsport, NY) | After a grueling week of action at tracks across NY state, the 2024 version of the Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweek concluded Sunday night at the Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY. Sitting atop victory hill when the dust settled was Danny Varin, $2,500 richer for his efforts. Pinnacle Pole Award winner Jordan Thomas brought the field to the green flag and jumped out to an early lead over Matt Tanner and Jonathan Preston. Working the extreme high side of the track, the lead trio caught lap traffic on lap 8, and Thomas was able to extend his lead navigating the slower cars with ease. By lap 12, he had extended his advantage over Matt Tanner to nearly half a track. As the laps wound down, however, Thomas' early lead had vanished, and while battling for position with Matt Tanner, his night would end in the fourth turn wall on the last lap. The ensuing restart set up a one-lap duel between Tanner and Varin, with Varin emerging victorious. "At the end, I was going to put it in the fence or try to win it," said Varin. "We just had to pull that wing forward and give it everything we had there for the lap and it paid off." "We got about an hour's worth of sleep last night; drove all the way back to Fonda, pulled two motors out, put one back in - it was just a huge effort and I couldn't do it without this whole team." Matt Tanner would cross the line in second, and Jonathan Preston rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. 34 winged warriors signed in for action on the final night of CNY Speedweek, splitting the field into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Cory Turner, Jordan Thomas, Danny Varin and Larry wight. E&V Energy heat races were won by Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier, Danny Varin and Larry Wight. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main went to Kelly Hebing, while Johnny Smith won The Wildcat dash. After one rainout and four straight nights of action, Jordan Poirier was crowned the 2024 CNY Speedweek champion. The St. Mathieu de Beloeil, Quebec driver was consistent all week, with a second-place finish at Utica-Rome, third at Brewerton, sixth at Fulton and fourth at Weedsport to round out the week. Davie Franek finished the week second in points, followed by Jason Barney in third, Danny Varin and Matt Tanner to round out the top five. - Franek Flies to Fulton Victory Lane
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | For the second time in 2024, 'No Panic' Davie Franek found himself in victory lane on Saturday night with the Empire Super Sprints. Earning $2,500 for his efforts, the New Jersey native took the lead on lap 5 and never looked back. Starting on the Pinnacle Pole, Franek fell into second place early behind outside polesitter Shawn Donath. On lap 5, Franek was able to slip by on Donath to take the lead. While running second, troubles with the ignition on lap 11 resulted in a DNF for the #53 of Donath, which handed over the runner up position to Matt Tanner. With everyone moving up a position as a result, that meant Billy VanInwegen would take over the final podium position moving into third, where he spent the next handful of laps. Meanwhile, eventual A-Verdi Storage Containers hard charger award recipient Jason Barney was working his way through the pack. Starting in 25th position after getting upside down in his heat race and more misfortune in the B-Main, Barney passed 22 cars, the final being VanInwegen on lap 23 to slip into third. Nobody had anything for Franek, however, as he crossed the checkers first with just shy of a 3.5 second advantage on lap 25. "Restarts were definitely not good for me tonight," said Franek in victory lane. "Obviously I got the lead there, but it was tough in the cockpit, the motor stumbled a little bit and really didn't have the car the way we wanted. Its just great to be standing here." Matt Tanner was able to hold on for second, while Jason Barney rounded out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium in third. Billy VanInwegen was fourth, and Johnny Smith completed the top five. 32 cars lined the pits for the 4th night of the 2024 CNY Speedweek, with the field being split into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Davie Franek, Johnny Smith, Ryan Coniam and Danny Varin. E&V Energy heat race winners were Matt Tanner, Jordan Poirier, Billy VanInwegen and Shawn Donath. The East Coast Sealcoat dash was won by Jordan Thomas, while Robbie Stillwaggon picked up the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. - Barney Leads Flag to Flag for CNY Speedweek Win at Brewerton
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | For the second time in 2024, Jason Barney sat in Empire Super Sprints victory lane on Friday night. The last time the Brewerton, NY driver sat in victory lane at his hometown track was over 5 years ago, in May of 2019. After drawing the Pinnacle Pole award, Barney led the field to the green flag alongside Sammy Reakes IV. He would jump out to an initial lead, with third starting Davie Franek getting by Reakes IV and settling into second. A caution and subsequent restart on lap 5 again saw Barney jump out to the lead, with Franek in tow followed by Shawn Donath, Reakes IV and Matt Tanner. Through the mid part of the race, the running order at the front of the field remained largely unchanged. Danny Varin, who had started the event in 7th, and Jordan Poirier, who had started in 12th, were steadily making their way through the field as the laps clicked by. A few late race restarts allowed both Varin and Poirier to work their way into the top 5, but as the checkers flew it was Jason Barney who crossed the line first, leading all 25 laps en-route to his $2,500 victory. "I've lost these races before, I've definitely lost them here at Brewerton on a late restart," said Barney. "I really wasn't sure what to do there." "I took a risk and tried the bottom in (turns) one and two. I missed it a little bit but got lucky, I just tried to cover as many lanes as I could." "I'm just thankful to be here in victory lane after last night; last night was last night and we just move on and try to do our best." After running the majority of the race just outside of the top 5, Chris Hile was able to work his way to a second-place finish, with Jordan Poirier finishing third and rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. Danny Varin finished 4th from his 7th place starting spot, and after spending the majority of the race in second, Davie Franek came home in 5th. Another strong field filled the pits for the Friday night event of CNY Speedweek, with 35 cars signed in for action. The field was split into 4 timed hot lap groups, with Chase Moran, Chris Hile, Joe Trenca and Jordan Poirier earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time honors. E&V Heat race winners were Shawn Donath, Sammy Reakes IV, Jason Barney and Robbie Stillwaggon. The Jakes Grub & Grog dash was won by Dalton Rombough, while Logan Crisafulli picked up the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main victory. - Barney Wins CNY Speedweek Feature at Brewerton
Jason Barney won the third round of Central New York Speedweek Friday night at Brewrton Speedway with the Empire Super Sprints.
- Friesen Finds Victory Lane in CNY Speedweek Night One
By Curtis Berleue (Vernon, NY) | Making a rare sprint car start, NASCAR Truck series driver Stewart Friesen picked up his fourth CNY Speedweek victory and first since 2015 on Thursday night at Utica-Rome Speedway. Driving for Glenn Styres, the now Sprakers, NY driver fended off multiple charges from Jordan Poirier for the $2,500 victory. Pinnacle pole award winner Stewart Friesen brought the field to green with Jordan Poirier on his outside. Going into turn one, Poirier took the early advantage on the outside. Before a lap could be completed, however, the first caution flew for multiple slowing cars. The ensuing restart saw another caution before the field could reach turn 3, this time for Josh Pieniazek in turn 1. The third restart was the charm, though, as a lap was able to be completed and Friesen was able to jump out to the lead. As Friesen clicked off lap 5, he started navigating lap traffic, with Poirier, Billy VanInwegen, Danny Varin and Jordan Thomas in tow. The next lap, however, another caution flew, this time for a slowing Chris Hile. Poirier was able to take full advantage of the restart, as he got a good run around the top and took the lead from Friesen. Behind the leaders, Matt Tanner was the star of the show as he had worked his way from the 22nd starting position to 9th in the first 10 laps. Another caution on lap 12 slowed the field again, and it spelled heartbreak for Tanner as an issue under caution ended his march to the front. Friesen was able to re-take the lead from Poirier on the restart, working the high side. Danny Varin followed in third, with Billy VanInwegen now in fourth and Joe Trenca rounding out the top 5. With Friesen opening up his lead over Poirier, all eyes were on the battle for 5th as Trenca and Davie Franek would trade slide jobs on each end of the track. Friesen was able to continue pulling away from the rest of the field and crossed under the checkers with over a 5 second lead. "That was a blast, big thanks to Glenn and the whole GSR crew, they're building these cars and motors in house now, and they were great" said Friesen in victory lane. "I didn't fire off real good on the bottom on restarts. I would overshoot turn one and then Jordan would get me." "The track was great though, even with as slick as it was we could race all over it." Jordan Poirier crossed the line in second, a solid start to CNY Speedweek. "I tried to start slow, I knew if I started slow I could have the momentum on the top side," said Poirier. "I knew if he got out in front of me, it was going to be tough to pass him." "He was super fast in 3 and 4, and it seemed like my car was just a little bit tighter. Hopefully tomorrow will go just like tonight and we can finish up front." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was Danny Varin. "It was tough tonight," said Varin. "When you start with those guys on the front row its going to be tough to beat them. Hats off to those guys, we made our car better all night but we were just off a little bit at the beginning of the night and were just trying to catch up a little bit. With 37 cars signed in on the night, the field was split into four timed hot lap groups. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Joe Trenca, Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier, and Matt Farnham. E&V Energy heat race winners were Joe Trenca, Jason Barney, Jordan Poirier and Jordan Thomas. Shawn Donath picked up the Kinney's Kar Kare dash, and Alex Therrien won the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. - Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweek Kicks Off Wednesday
By Curtis Berleue (LaFargeville, NY) | Each season, one of the most anticipated events on the Empire Super Sprints schedule is the CNY Speedweek. Consisting of five nights of action in a row at five different tracks, it is one of the most grueling yet rewarding weeks of the season for 360 sprint car drivers in the northeast. This year's version will kick off on Wednesday, July 3 at the Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, NY. Just minutes from the Canadian border, the 4/10-mile oval is the traditional CNY Speedweek kick-off venue. Last year, Jordan Poirier sat in victory lane to start the week. The following night, Thursday July 4, the tour will head south to the Utica-Rome Speedway. While this is the first trip of the season to Utica-Rome, three ESS events were at the track last year. In 2023, Paulie Colagiovanni, Danny Varin and Matt Farnham all found victory lane at the Vernon, NY facility. Friday night, July 5, will see the second for three scheduled ESS events in 2024 at the Brewerton Speedway in Brewerton, NY. Earlier this season, it was Danny Varin who sat in victory lane. After the action on Friday evening, drivers and crews can look forward to the annual pit party. One night later, the stars and cars of the Empire Super Sprints will head just a few minutes up the road to the Fulton Speedway for night number four on the week, on Saturday July 6. Two ESS events have already been completed at Fulton in 2024, with Jason Barney picking up the season opener on April 26, and the Memorial Day weekend event on May 25th falling to rain. Rounding out the week will be the first of two stops in 2024 at the Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY. Local modified ace Larry Wight has been tough to beat in a sprint car at the 3/8-mile venue in recent years, having picked up the two most recent A-Mains held in 2022 and 2023. Each event on the CNY Speedweek calendar will see a boosted purse, with the winner earning a cool $2,500. Special CNY Speedweek merchandise will be available to purchase at the ESS apparel trailer in limited supply at each track throughout the week. Additional information for each night, including admission prices and an order of events, can be found on each track's website/social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. - Empire Super Sprints CNY Speedweek Kicks Off Wednesday
Each season, one of the most anticipated events on the Empire Super Sprints schedule is the CNY Speedweek. Consisting of five nights of action in a row at five different tracks, it is one of the most grueling yet rewarding weeks of the season for 360 sprint car drivers in the northeast.
- ESS Crosses the Border to Brockville, Cornwall This Weekend
By Curtis Berleue (Brockville, ONT) | Some of the most anticipated events on the Empire Super Sprints schedule each year are always the trips north of the border into Canada. 2024 is no different, and this coming weekend is the first of three border crossings for full-point events for the season. Saturday, the tour will invade the Brockville Ontario Speedway for their first of two trips to the track, and Sunday will be the lone stop in 2024 at the Cornwall Motor Speedway. A strong contingent of ESS regulars is expected to take on some of the toughest Canadian locals. Leading the charge north is current points leader Jason Barney, who, in addition to the success he's been enjoying so far in 2024, will be tough to beat as he is a former winner at both Brockville (2017) and Cornwall (2018) in ESS action. Two time and defending champion Jordan Poirier sits second in points headed into the weekend. The Quebec native and local favorite also has had success at both tracks in the past, notching an ESS win at Cornwall in 2017. All persons entering the pits on Saturday at Brockville should be reminded that a digital waiver must be signed per the tracks insurance, and no paper waiver will be available at the track. The waiver can be found at https://bos.speedwaiver.com . Additionally, all teams looking to purchase medium tires should get their order to Shawn Donath no later than Thursday as only a limited supply will be available at the track this weekend. The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. - Rombough Repeats in Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial at Evans Mills
By Curtis Berleue (Evans Mills, NY) | For the second time in two years, Dalton Rombough picked up $4,000 at Evans Mills Raceway Park on Saturday night in the Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial Asphalt Spectacular. The Lowville, NY driver was the first driver in tour history to repeat victories at the Evans Mills oval. Danny Varin jumped out to an early lead over Pinnacle pole winner Logan Crisafulli, with Dalton Rombough and Matt Tanner settling in behind him. Rombough, however, made quick work of Crisafulli for second and got by him just a handful of laps later, setting his sights on Varin for the lead. Closing quickly on Varin, Rombough was soon at Varin's bumper and was able to slip underneath Varin exiting turn two for the lead. Behind Rombough, Matt Tanner had caught the #01 of Varin and was all over his bumper for second until a mistake entering turn two just after halfway let Kelly Hebing slip by him. As the laps clicked by, and with Rombough checked out, Hebing meticulously stalked Varin, eventually getting by him to take second. With over a half track lead on Hebing for second, Rombough went unchallenged for the remainder of the event and picked up the $4,000 victory. "We took a little stagger out, dropped the wings and made a little bit of air pressure adjustments after the heat," said Rombaugh. "The track kinda came to us a little bit in the feature and it worked out pretty well tonight." Kelly Hebing crossed the line in second after starting sixth. "It was good, I can't complain. I can't lie either and say I don't want one spot more," said Hebing. "When I saw halfway it was time to go and get around Varin." "Not two laps later, I snapped my brake pedal and had to move my line up a little to keep my momentum up. I was able to tuck in between two lap cars and make one big car so Danny couldn't get me back." Danny Varin, winner of the event two years ago, crossed the line in third for another podium finish. "The guys worked hard, trying to make the car better," said Varin. "We just missed it today; we weren't really good in hot laps and made it a little bit better in the heat race. We went in the right direction for the feature, just needed a little bit more." Picking up E&V Energy heat wins on the night were Logan Crisafulli and Dalton Rombough. As part of the evenings special events, fans in attendance were also able to get up close and personal with the stars of the Empire Super Sprints for an on track autograph session and both Rombough and Hebing participated in a 'pie in the face' contest to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network of Northern NY. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Saturday June 22nd at the Brockville Ontario Speedway in Brockville, Ontario, followed by a trip to Cornwall Motor Speedway in Cornwall, Ontario the following evening. - Franek Finds Victory Lane at Freedom
By Curtis Berleue (Delevan, NY) | After out dueling defending champion Jordan Poirier, Davie Franek is $4,000 richer for winning the Julia Horton Memorial at Freedom Motorsports Park. It is Franek's first Empire Super Sprints triumph of the 2024 season. Pinnacle Pole winner Joe Trenca opted to start at the rear of the field, so Jordan Poirier and 'No Panic' Davie Franek brought the field to the initial green flag of the 25-lap A-Main event. Poirier jumped out to an early lead, though the field was slowed after just a few circuits when the first caution of the night flew. On the ensuing restart, Poirier again jumped out to the lead over Franek, but a red flag for the #7C of Dylan Swiernik after making hard contact with the wall in turn 3 would slow the field's progress again. Through multiple restarts, Poirier was able to jump out to an advantage over Franek, while the #4P of Chase Moran, #53 of Shawn Donath and #3Z of Johnny Smith traded spots multiple times for positions 3-5. With just a handful of laps remaining, Franek was able to finally clear the #28 of Jordan Poirier for the lead and opened up about a half-straightaway margin en-route to victory lane. "It was elbows-up track for sure," said Franek in victory lane. "He (Poirier) was changing his line up throughout the race, the way that the apex of the corner here is tough. The guy that is leading has a little bit of and advantage and I was trying to time it right." "He hit a little slick spot coming off of turn four and I was just able to clear his bumper by a little bit and then cross him over down here in turn one." After leading the majority of the race, Jordan Poirier had to settle for a second-place finish. "With all of those restarts, I was just trying to survive, go late," said Poirier. "Second sucks, but its still better than nothing. After our poor run last night, we decided to switch cars so we worked all night and all morning, but it seems like it paid off." Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was the #53 of Shawn Donath. "It was tough to pick your own lane, everyone was bouncing a little from lane to lane, just a challenging track tonight. Overall, it was a solid finish for the team though," said Donath. Finishing in fourth was Jonathan Preston, who also earned the A-Verdi Storage Containers Hard Charger coming from 15th, and Chase Moran rounded out the top 5. With 24 cars signed into the pits, the field was split into three timed hot lap groups. Earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards were Davie Franek, Jared Zimbardi and Dylan Swiernik. Jordan Poirier, Johnny Smith and Matt Farnham picked up E&V Energy Heat wins, and Jared Zimbardi won the Cobra Coaches dash presented by IndyKart Raceway. After his hard hit into the turn 3 wall, Dylan Swiernik was transported to a local hospital where it was determined he had multiple compression fractures in his back. He is sore but recovering and wishes to thank all the track safety staff, ESS officials and EMTs that helped get him to the hospital. The next scheduled event for the Empire Super Sprints is this coming Saturday June 15th at the Evans Mills Raceway Park in Evans Mills NY for the annual $4,000 to Win Kevin Ward Jr. Memorial Asphalt Spectacular. - WNY Doubleheader Kicks off June for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | To kick off the month of June, the Empire Super Sprints are set to head to Western NY for a doubleheader weekend. For the only time in 2024, the tour will make a stop at the Ransomville Speedway in Ransomville, NY on Friday night and at the Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan, NY on Saturday night. Friday's trip to the Ransomville Speedway will again pay tribute to Ron Lux in the 25 lap Ron Lux Memorial paying $2,000 to win. Lux competed in the supermodified division at Oswego Speedway where he was a champion, along with the USAC sanctioned sprint car events. His career came to an untimely end in 1966, as Lux succumbed to injuries sustained in a USAC sprint car crash at the age of 28. On Saturday, the tour moves an hour and a half south to the Freedom Motorsports Park. Saturday's event at Freedom will be one of the highest paying tour events of the season, with $4,800 being added to the purse in memory of Julia Horton. The added prize money has been distributed through the field - the A-Main will pay $4,000 to win, $600 for 10th and $400 to start! Last year at Freedom, it was Jonathan Preston who was victorious. The weekends Cobra Coaches Dash Series dashes will pay $125 to the winner of the four lap affair each night courtesy of IndyKart Raceway Indoor Karting. IndyKart is an authentic indoor racing experience where drivers can compete in professional, fully electric racing karts at speeds of over 45mph on a European-style racing circuit. Pricing information and a full order of events for the weekends on-track action can be found on both Ransomville and Freedoms websites and social media pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media pages. - Varin Wins Don Gillette Memorial at Brewerton Speedway
By Curtis Berleue (Brewerton, NY) | For the second time in two years, Danny Varin is the winner of the Don Gillette Memorial at the Brewerton Speedway. Leading every lap, Vain picked up $2,000 for his efforts to kick off Memorial Day weekend. Starting on the Pinnacle Pole alongside Chris Hile, Varin jumped out to an early lead. Hile followed Varin in second for the majority of the first 10 laps, before 4th place starting Shawn Donath moved into the top 3 on lap 11. While Donath, Hile, and Jason Barney were busy battling at the front of the field, however, Larry Wight and Chad Phelps were each working on an impressive run from deep in the field. Starting 7th, Wight fell back as far as 10th in the opening laps before picking his way through the field. By lap 11, Wight had cracked the top 5, and moved into third just a few short laps later on lap 15. Phelps had started 21st, and by lap 8 had passed 11 cars to break into 10th. The following four laps, Phelps moved by four more cars and found himself in 6th place. Meanwhile at the front of the field, Varin was still in command, closely followed by Shawn Donath who had worked his way into the second position, and Larry Wight. With four laps to go, Wight moved past Donath to take second. As the field crossed the line, it was Varin who got there first, followed by Larry Wight and Shawn Donath rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium. Jason Barney finished fourth, and Chad Phelps rounded out the top 5. Phelps' run from 21st to 5th was good enough to earn him the A-Verdi Storage Containers hard charger award. 35 cars signed into the pits on A-Verdi Storage containers night at the Brewerton Speedway. The field was split into four hot lap / qualifying groups, with Jordan Poirier, Shawn Donath, Dylan Swiernik and Danny Varin earning Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards in each. E&V Energy heat wins were scored by Jordan Poirier, Jason Barney, Dylan Swiernik and Danny Varin. The Cobra Coaches Dash presented by J&Z Snowdrifters was won by Tyler Rand, while Chad Phelps won the Lacaillade Masonry B-Main. - Brewerton, Fulton up Next for Empire Super Sprints
By Curtis Berleue (Oswego, NY) | Coming off a successful start to the 2024 season just a few short weeks ago, the Empire Super Sprints are set to get back in action this coming weekend for a Memorial Day doubleheader. The tour will stop at Brewerton Speedway on Friday May 24, and then return to the Fulton Speedway for the second time in 2024 the following night, Saturday May 25. Friday's trip to the Brewerton Speedway will be the first of three stops for the tour at the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon' in 2024. The event will once again pay respect to the late Don Gillette, who was a Brewerton, NY native climbing the sprint car ranks before he tragically lost his life at the Trenton Speedway when he was 29 years old. Danny Varin is the defending winner of the Don Gillette Memorial, and Paulie Colagiovanni was victorious in the other two stops at the track for the tour in 2023. Saturday night, the cars and stars of the Empire Super Sprints will move just 25 minutes up the road to the Fulton Speedway, where Jason Barney picked up the season-opening win at the end of April. Barney has been nearly unbeatable at Fulton with 8 wins in the last 13 events held there, and a total of 11 victories dating back to 2014. Coming into the weekend as the points leader, he is sure to once again be a force to be reckoned with at both tracks. Friday night's program will receive extra support from J&Z Snowdrifters, who have come on board to present the Cobra Coaches Dash Series Dash. The official order of events for both nights, along with pricing for each event can be found on both tracks' website and Facebook pages, along with on the Empire Super Sprints social media channels. - Barney Continues Fulton Dominance; Wins ESS Opener
By Curtis Berleue (Fulton, NY) | The start of a new season brought a familiar face to victory lane Friday night at the Fulton Speedway for the Empire Super Sprints. Jason Barney picked up his first win of 2024 and fourth in his last five visits to the Oswego County oval after coming from his seventh starting position. Pinnacle pole winner Davie Franek and Chad Phelps led the field to the initial start, though the field quickly slowed for a caution for the #68 of Aaron Turkey, a victim of circumstance from hard racing deep in the pack. On the ensuing restart, Davie Franek quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead over Matt Tanner and Phelps. The field again slowed for a caution on lap 4, this time for Mike Bowman who found himself stopped facing the wrong way on the back stretch. By lap 7, defending tour champion Jordan Poirier had entered the mix and was able to take the lead. For the next handful of laps, Poirier continued to grow the distance between himself and second place. Jason Barney, who had moved into second on lap 8, began to close the gap between himself and Poirier on lap 11 when Poirier reached lap traffic. He was ultimately able to use lap traffic to take the lead as the field came to complete lap 19, and never looked back on his way to victory lane. "I was running out of time and running out of chances as the race went on," said Barney in victory lane. "Before that last restart I kind of found the middle, and I rolled by Jordan (Poirier) there. I knew he wasn't going to let that happen again. He went right to the middle and I just had to keep searching around." "He made it interesting, I wasn't sure what to do there, I could tell he wasn't sure to do either and I just stuck it down on the bottom and hoped that we didn't touch." Defending champion Jordan Poirier led a handful of laps early on, and was able to hold on for a second place finish. "My car was really, really good. I just took a safe lap around a lap car, and Jason slid under me there," said Poirier. "We struggle with these kind of conditions, so it feels good to have something to build on for the next few races for sure. Rounding out the Ashley Lynn Winery podium was hometown favorite Larry Wight. "We were a little bit tight on the bottom, we just had to move around to find out what the car liked," said Wight. "I don't know, even if we had a caution, these guys were in clean air and setting a really good pace. We just needed the lap cars to fall my way a little better." 36 cars signed in to the pits for the 2024 season opener. Rifenburg Contracting fast time awards went to Danny Varin, Jordan Thomas, Jonathan Preston and Jason Barney. E&V Energy heat race wins went to Matt Tanner, Davey Franek, Dylan Swiernik, and Kelly Hebing. The Lacaillade Masonry B-Main was won by Mark Smith, and the Cobra Coaches Dash presented by Dirt Track Digest was won by Mike Bowman.
