Watsonville Speedway Dirt Track News
- Exciting finishes highlight opening night of the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout/ Legends Weekend
Placerville, CA…Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield and Redding's Max Mittry shared victory lane at Placerville Speedway on Friday, each picking up exhilarating late race wins on opening night of the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout/ Legends Weekend presented by Berco Building Materials. Both drivers were competing aboard unfamiliar cars, as Bloomfield piloted the C&M Motorsports No. 7c Winged Sprinter, while Mittry brought the Chase Johnson Racing No. 24 back to victory lane with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series. The 30-lap Winged Sprint Car feature began with 2023 SCCT champion Justyn Cox rocketing into the lead. An inordinate amount of caution flags came out in the main event, which forced Cox to deal with numerous restarts. He did a tremendous job every time while keeping the field at bay for much of the contest. Bloomfield had settled into second and closed the gap a few times as lapped traffic came into play, but each moment that would occur, yellow flag fever appeared. A final five lap shootout then came into play and during it, things began to heat up. With drivers continuing to fly around the high side Bloomfield closed in quickly with the white flag soon approaching. Heading into the final set of corners Bloomfield charged to the bottom in turn three and drove up in front of Cox. The pair battled tooth and nail, side by side down to the checkered flag with Bloomfield coming out on top by the narrowest of margins. The thrilling conclusion was his third career Placerville Speedway triumph and the second of 2026. Cox continued his early season speed by claiming the ADCO Driveline Fast Time Award to begin the evening and coming home second in the feature. It marked his second runner up effort of the Placerville campaign. Reigning track champion Tony Gomes gave it a nice run in the main event, carving his way from 10th to third while Max Mittry and Nick Parker completed the top five. Rounding out the top 10 were Tanner Carrick, Shane Golobic, Luke Hayes, Michael Sellers and Jake Haulot. It was a nice recovery for Golobic, who brought out a caution while running third on lap five. In the 30 lap Ultimate Sprint Car Series finale it was Max Mittry who took command early on and had his way with things for most of the race. Much like the Winged 360 main event, yellow flags slowed the flow of things at times during the contest. Once some green flag racing was put in the books though the action became fast and furious on the quarter mile bullring. Drivers raced high, low and in the middle with close battles taking place throughout the pack. As the race wound down El Cajon's Braden Chiaramonte closed on Mittry and the pair proceeded to put on an epic show for the lead. The incredible clash saw Chiaramonte officially lead lap 28, before Mittry sliced his way back by, leading the white flag lap. Mittry would go on to cross under the Ed Entz checkered flag for a very special victory aboard the Chase Johnson Racing No. 24 mount. Friday night marked the first time CJR has been back in competition since Johnson's accident at Silver Dollar Speedway in 2024. For Mittry it was his second career Sprint Car victory after getting his initial triumph one week prior at Watsonville Speedway. Chiaramonte, Cole Wakim, Ryan Timmons and Jacob Tuttle rounded out the top five. Both Wakim and Tuttle were fun to watch while they drove the ragged edge of Placerville Speedway. Completing the top 10 were Shane Hopkins, Tanner Carrick, Nate Schank, Austin Cato and Alex Peck. A strong field of 30 cars competed on opening night with USCS. Blake Bower started the evening by setting new Non-Winged Sprint Car track record with a lap of 11.502. The Nor*Cal Posse Shootout concludes tonight with an $8,000-to-win Winged Sprint Car feature, along with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series back in action as well. - Brent Sexton Gaining Steam, Set for Placerville Sprint Car Battle
Lakeside, CA — April 29, 2026 — After turning in a strong performance last Friday night at Watsonville Speedway, veteran sprint car driver Brent Sexton is heading back north this weekend for the 8th Annual Nor Cal Posse Shootout with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series at Placerville Speedway. Watsonville is quickly becoming one of Sexton's favorite stops, and he added another solid run to his résumé there last weekend. Returning to the track where he scored a fifth-place finish in 2025, the night did not start the way he had hoped. In his first-ever race in a winged 360 sprint car, Sexton qualified 15th out of 18 cars with a time of 12.304. He then started and finished fifth in his preliminary heat race. When the green flag dropped for the main event, however, he showed his trademark determination. Starting on the inside of the eighth row, the three-time lightning sprint car champion charged forward in the #3G, advancing five positions to finish 10th. The result marked his seventh top-10 finish in nine main event starts in 2026. Twenty-four hours later, Sexton made the trip to Merced Speedway for his debut with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Unfortunately, rain arrived after qualifying, forcing the cancellation of the remainder of the program. Now, with a 540-mile journey from his Lakeside, California home, Sexton sets his sights on Placerville Speedway for his fourth Ultimate Sprint Car Series appearance of the season. His most impressive outing to date came at Thunderbowl Raceway on March 28th, when he charged from 14th to seventh in the main event. Three weeks later at the same track, a sticking throttle ended his night early, resulting in an 18th-place finish. Racing at Placerville this weekend is expected to draw a strong USCS field at one of Northern California's premier sprint car tracks. It will give Sexton another opportunity to build momentum as the season rolls on. Adult tickets at Placerville are $25 each night. Seniors (62+), military personnel, and juniors (ages 12-17) are $22. Kids ages 6-11 are $10, and children five and under are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at the following links: Friday: https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr-050126 Saturday: https://www.eventsprout.com/event/psr-050226 Placerville Speedway is located at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville, California. - Max Mittry nets initial Sprint Car win Friday night at Watsonville Speedway
Watsonville, CA…After trying for several years and being close on numerous occasions, Redding's Max Mittry withstood the relentless challenges of Dominic Gorden to claim his first ever Sprint Car triumph on Friday at Watsonville Speedway. Sharing victory lane on Little League Night were Adriane Frost with the R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks, Danny Wagner with the SSSP South Bay Dwarf Cars and Ben Standen with Police N Pursuit. The Gold Star GMC 360 Sprint Car feature turned out to be an entertaining affair on a well-prepared racing surface. Mittry climbed out front at the green flag but had Gorden keeping him honest every step of the way. Campbell's Bud Kaeding then went to work on Gorden for the runner up spot, as the duo exchanged positions on lap six. Gorden was able to get back by though and continue his pursuit of the leader. Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery then found the bottom side to his liking and picked off cars one by one. When the 25-lap contest wound down it was Mittry, Gorden and Montgomery who closed up with things nearing a conclusion. Gorden hounded Mittry and gave him everything he could handle over the waning stages. With the white flag in the air, Mittry had a slight bobble on the cushion in turn two, which looked to give Gorden a chance. The Clovis driver charged to his inside as the crowd came to its feet. The final corners, however, saw Gorden get sideways and spin in turn four, as Mittry flashed under the Ed Entz checkered flag for victory. Mittry was emotional on the front stretch after finally sealing the deal when it comes to Winged Sprint Car racing. Following him across the line were Montgomery, Kaeding, Landon Henry and Jake Andreotti in the top five. Local favorite Adriane Frost raced to her first R&J Landscaping Hobby Stock triumph of the season on Friday night. Frost had a large cheering section in the Watsonville grandstands and claimed the win ahead of Dakota Keldsen, Matt Ehler, Sam Kennedy and final starter Lilly Mead, who carved her way through the field in exciting fashion. Captain Chaos Danny Wagner dominated the SSSP South Bar Dwarf Car finale to bring home the win over Ricardo Rivera, Jason Lazzerini, David Hays and Eric Weisler. It was an emotional night for the Dwarf Cars as they paid tribute to long time Watsonville Speedway friend and racer Mark Biscardi, who passed away recently. The Police N Pursuit feature saw the Outlaw Kenny Stragalinos outrun the officers to cross the stripe in first. As a reward he was able to arrest an officer on the front stretch! Ben Standen was the PnP regular to take the checkered flag. - Brent Sexton Set To Make 360 Wing Debut At Watsonville And Merced This Weekend
Lakeside, CA — April 23, 2026 — Sexton Gatlin Racing will cap off a busy April when Brent Sexton heads north this Friday and Saturday for a pair of winged 360 sprint car races. The first stop is Friday night at Watsonville Speedway, followed by a Saturday showdown in the highly competitive Sprint Car Challenge Tour event at Merced Speedway. The two nights of racing will mark Brent's first appearance in a winged 360 car. Last Saturday, Brent and his youngest son, 21-year-old Grant, made the trek to the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare for a date with the third-year Ultimate Sprint Car Series. It was Brent's fourth race with the series in 2026 and his second at the Thunderbowl this year. In his previous appearance at the popular Central Valley oval, he turned in an impressive performance. After finishing fifth in his heat race, he started 14th in the A Main and charged forward to a strong seventh-place finish. That effort was even more notable considering officials red-flagged the race early due to time constraints, while both the driver and car had more to give. Unfortunately, things did not go as well for the three-time lightning sprint car champion this time around. A broken shifter cable in qualifying immediately put him behind the eight-ball for the remainder of the night. Unable to start his heat race, he was forced to line up near the back of the field for the main event. Starting 17th, Sexton advanced one position before his night came to an early end. A sticking throttle created a dangerous situation, prompting him to pull into the infield rather than risk taking a chunk out of the crash wall. "The throttle was sticking and I was standing on the brakes trying to keep it under control," he said. "It didn't end well." Grant's night showed early promise. He qualified fourth fastest in Group #1 with a lap of 16.007, which ranked eighth overall among the 19 cars on hand. He then started fourth and finished second in his heat race. In the main event, he rolled off from seventh and battled inside the top 10 for much of the race until contact from another car on lap 17 forced him to retire early. He was credited with a 15th-place finish. This weekend's races will mark the 11th start in April for a Sexton Gatlin Racing driver and car combination. Earlier this month, Sexton Gatlin Racing was scheduled to compete at both Watsonville and Merced with the non-wing USCS. However, both events were canceled due to rain. One year ago, Brent made his Watsonville Speedway debut and immediately turned heads. He opened the weekend by qualifying third fastest in his USCS group with a lap of 13.375, which placed him 10th overall in the 19-car field. He then started fourth in his heat race, led much of the distance, and finished second. Starting seventh in the main event on the Santa Cruz County oval, Sexton quickly found himself in the thick of the action. Working both the high and low lines, he advanced as high as fourth before slipping back to eighth or ninth during the intense battle. Staying composed, he rallied to finish fifth at the checkered flag. "It was so much fun," he said at the time. "I loved the track. I am having the time of my life. To finish fifth the first time ever at the track, that is cool. I am happy." Spectator gates at Watsonville Speedway will open at 4:30 p.m. for Friday's race. The track is located at 2601 East Lake Avenue in Watsonville, California (95076). For more information, visit watsonvillespeedway.com. For Saturday's event, Merced Speedway is located at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Merced, California (95341). Additional information can be found at mercedspeedway.net. - Fourteen-year-old Jett Barnes strikes for Gold Star GMC Sprint Car victory at Watsonville Speedway
Watsonville, CA…Visalia's Jett Barnes and Redding's Max Mittry put forth a crowd-pleasing performance on Friday night at Watsonville Speedway. When all was done and dusted it was Barnes fending off Mittry to grab his first career Gold Star GMC Sprint Car triumph at the quarter mile. Fellow winners on Friday evening included Cody Burke with the IMCA Modifieds, Austin VanHoff with the Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods, Joe Gallaher with the R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks and Eric Weisler with the SSSP South Bay Dwarf Cars. Barnes and Mittry led the field to green in the 25-lap Gold Star GMC Sprint Car finale. After a couple of laps, it was Barnes who settled into the lead. Mittry came to life after a handful of circuits however and closed right up on the tail tank of the Jason Meyers Racing No. 14. After hounding the leader for a few circuits Mittry made his move on lap 13 to scoop up the top spot as the crowd came to its feet. The reigning SCCT Speedweek champion was in search of career win number one and looked solid, but Barnes wasn't done just yet. The youngster found the high side in turns one and two, creating monster runs in his pursuit of the lead. With just five laps remaining Barnes shot back around for the top spot and held off Mittry to the Ed Entz checkered flag. It capped a strong three week run for Barnes at Watsonville Speedway, where he scored the Keith Day Company Fast Time Award on three straight occasions and podiumed each race. Completing the top five behind him and Mittry were Kaleb Montgomery, Dominic Gorden and Jake Haulot. Adrianna Demartini brought home the Taco Bravo Hard Charger Award. Past IMCA Modified champ Cody Burke of Salinas led all 25 laps in the main event during their season debut on Friday. Burke hit his marks down low each time and held off a relentless Andrew Pierce for the win. Pierce, Troy Foulger, Logan Drake and Nick Decarlo followed him across the line. The Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods put on a fantastic main event for the fans last night. With track conditions in superb shape the 20-lapper saw multiple different leaders and a race that wasn't decided till the very end. Kingsburg driver Todd Carlock led the early stages in his No7 mount until having a moment midway through the contest. The always fast Jason Ryan Jr. then held the point over the second half of the race as he, Bo Crebs and Austin VanHoff battled it out. Lapped traffic created a hectic finish that saw VanHoff take full advantage and pick the right spots to move out front. He led the final couple of circuits to claim the exciting triumph over Ryan, Tanner Thomas, Crebs and Emali VanHoff. The R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks acted as the night cap on Friday and saw multi time track champion Joe Gallaher pick up a close win at the finish. Fan Favorite Adriane Frost led early until Gallaher rocketed by for the lead. As things began to play out it was Gallaher, Frost and Lilly Mead racing close together up front. The veteran Gallaher had to be perfect over the closing stages as Mead found another gear and came after him quickly. Gallaher never faltered though and narrowly beat out Mead coming to the checkered flag. Frost, Dwayne Short and Dakota Keldsen rounded out the top five. The Security Shoring and Steel Plates Dwarf Cars made their season debut on Friday. Danny Wagner dominated the contest only to have mechanical issues three laps shy of the finish. Eric Weisler took advantage and motored off to win over Jason Lazzerini and John Durden. - Haulot, King, Villanueva, Keldsen and Welborn score Friday wins at Watsonville Speedway
Watsonville, CA…Cotati's Jake Haulot is routinely one of the fast cars when he makes the trip down to Watsonville Speedway. On Friday night he was able to fend off a late challenge from Jake Andreotti and Jett Barnes to claim an entertaining victory with the Gold Star GMC Sprint Cars. A total of 80 cars filled the pit area for point race number two and fans were treated to some excellent racing in all divisions. Sharing victory lane on Friday were Landon King with the Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods, Mike Villanueva with the Giuliani Construction IMCA Stock Cars, Dakota Keldsen with the R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks and Jonathan Welborn with the Heat Wave Visual Four Bangers. Haulot climbed out front at the waving of the green flag during the 25-lap Gold Star Sprint Car feature. Young Jett Barnes moved into second after a few laps and attempted to chase after the leader. Making his debut with Keller Motorsports on Friday, all eyes were soon glued to Jake Andreotti, who found the high side to his liking in turns one and two. Andreotti sliced his way into third on lap six and then began to hound the top two as the race wound down. The final five laps were a high-speed tussle between Haulot, Barnes and Andreotti. On lap 22 Andreotti charged into second and looked to have something for the leader. Haulot hit his marks however and edged out Andreotti at the Ed Entz checkered flag. Jett Barnes came home a very close third after setting the Keith Day Trucking Fast Time for the second week in a row to start the evening. Grant Duinkerken and young Landon Henry completed the top five. Andreotti took home the Taco Bravo Hard Charger Award in the feature. The Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods brought a fantastic 24 car field to Watsonville Speedway on Friday. Pismo Beach driver Landon King rocketed out to the early lead in the 20-lap finale. Bakersfield's Nicholas Johnson was on the move right from the get-go and assumed the runner up spot on lap eight. Johnson applied pressure to King and seemed to have the speed to win but got into a spin seven circuits shy of the finish to draw a caution. King, who cut his teeth in Outlaw Karts, went on to tally his first Watsonville Speedway Sport Mod triumph. Following King across the stripe were Ethan Johnson, Jason Bannister, Danny Wagner and Buddy Kniss. The Watsonville Speedway debut of the Giuliani Construction IMCA Stock Cars saw the main event go right down to the wire. A solid field of 16 Stock Cars came out and provided some excellent action in their finale. Atwater racer Mike Villanueva ended up leading all 20 laps, but he certainly had to work for it. Tricky Troy Foulger and Fast Freddie Ryland gave him everything he could handle over the closing stages. Villanueva never faltered though and narrowly topped Foulger to bring home the bacon. Ryland came home third followed by Tyler Bannister and Paul Stone. The R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks were the show of the night with a tremendous 20 lap feature on Friday. Numerous drivers battled up front for the win, and it was not decided until the flag stand on the final lap. Veteran driver Jerry Skelton from the famed Cheater Row Racing gang led a majority of the contest but had several fast cars hot on his heels. Bobby Gallaher, Dakota Keldsen, Adrianne Frost and Joe Gallaher were all within striking distance at times When the white flag waved it was Skelton and B. Gallaher who looked to be the pair deciding things. A wild final corner though saw both wash up the track, which allowed Keldsen to make a bold move down low and steal the win at the line. The Heat Wave Visual Four Banger feature was a dominant performance by Jonathan Welborn who picked up the win by nearly three seconds. Shelbie Freeman gave it great run to score her best career finish in second followed by Tracy Sampson, Matt Wirth and Travis VanGilder.
