- Brent Sexton Has Dream Trip to Indiana
Lakeside, CA - June 19, 2025 — Brent Sexton of Lakeside, California, lived out a lifelong dream earlier this month when he traveled to Indiana to compete in the Sprint Car portion of Indiana Midget Week. The three-time Lightning Sprint Car champion was geared up to compete six nights in a row. However, Mother Nature had other plans, and the veteran racer was only able to race three times due to rain. Sexton and the traveling Sexton Gatlin Racing crew kicked off their Indiana campaign at Circle City Raceway, just minutes from the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway on June 3rd. There, Sexton faced the toughest field of competitors in his sprint car career. Still, the seasoned driver wasn't fazed in the slightest. After qualifying seventh in his group, he lined up in the same spot for his heat race. Early on, he ran near the back but quickly found speed on the low line, advancing to fifth and nearly grabbing the final transfer spot before running out of laps. In the 17-car, 12-lap B Main, Sexton started fourth—thanks to his heat race performance—and held his ground, using the bottom groove to move up to third and secure a coveted transfer into the A Main. For a driver who only began racing full-sized sprint cars two years ago, transferring into the main event against such a stacked field was a significant achievement. Starting 19th in the feature due to his qualifying time, Sexton again relied on the low line and charged forward to finish 14th. Only two other drivers passed more cars than the Tennessee native in the 25-lap main event. Twenty-four hours later, Sexton and the beautiful #42 car made the short trip to Paragon Speedway. Buoyed by his strong showing at Circle City, he was ready to take on another unfamiliar track. Qualifying didn't go in his favor, however, as he timed in ninth in his group and started deep in his heat. He managed to pass one car, placing him in a tough spot for the 22-car B Main. Starting 16th, Sexton again went to work on the bottom, advancing five positions to finish 11th. Unfortunately, time ran out, and he didn't make the A Main. On the bright side, only four drivers improved their positions more in the B. The following night at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, racing was canceled due to rain. Unfortunately, the wet weather lingered, washing out the next two nights of competition at Bloomington and Tri-State Speedway. Fortunately, the rain vacated the area by Sunday night, and Sexton was able to compete at the legendary Kokomo Speedway—a track he had looked forward to racing on the most. He qualified seventh in his group of 10 and finished eighth in both his heat race and the B Main. Though he didn't make the A, just getting the chance to compete at Kokomo was another highlight of the trip. Aside from the rain and some motorhome issues on the return trip, the week was a memorable one for the entire Sexton Gatlin Racing team. While most of the team was in Indiana, SGR teammate Braydin Collie had a stellar outing with the California Lightning Sprint Cars at Bakersfield Speedway on June 7th. After qualifying seventh, the El Cajon, California teenager won his eight-lap heat race. Starting sixth in the feature, he charged to the front and even led momentarily in a thrilling mid-race battle. He eventually finished third—his best result of the year. Sexton Gatlin Racing has a big announcement on the horizon. Details will be revealed in the next week to 10 days. - Sexton Gatlin Racing Makes Indiana Debut This Week
Lakeside, CA - June 1, 2025 — For the first time in their careers, Brent Sexton and his son Grant will be racing in Indiana this week. The Lakeside, California-based Sexton Gatlin Racing (SGR) team is set to compete in six consecutive nights of sprint car action as part of Indiana Midget Week. The series kicks off at the cozy confines of Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis. Brent, 52, and Grant, 20, are well-known names in lightning sprint car circles. Brent is a three-time lightning sprint champion, earning California Lightning Sprint Car Series titles in 1999 and 2008, and capturing the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series championship in 2022. The latter came a year after Grant claimed the same title in 2021. In 2023, the father-son duo began shifting their focus to the high-powered 410 sprint cars in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. That year, Grant, then 19, earned Rookie of the Year honors, while Brent finished third in the same category in 2024. Over the past two years, SGR has adopted a "pick and choose" approach to their race schedule, and 2025 has followed suit. Brent has competed in seven events so far—five with the Ultimate Sprint Car Series (USCS) and two with USAC/CRA. His best finish to date is a fifth-place showing at Ocean Speedway with USCS on March 28. Grant has made five starts this season—three in USCS and two in USAC/CRA. His top result came at Ventura Raceway on March 8, where he finished eighth in a USCS event. "A good buddy of mine, Mark Deskovick, moved out there (Indiana) from Ramona," Sexton answered when asked why they are headed to Indiana. "He always said we should come out to visit and see what it is all about. It has been a bucket list thing, and now we are in a position to do it." "I would love to make A mains more than anything," Sexton continued. "Being a first timer, just seeing the tracks we have always dreamed about is a big deal. I am looking forward to seeing all of them. We begin at Circle City and finish at Kokomo. I cannot wait." In preparation for Indiana Midget Week, the Sextons consulted with Anaheim native and Indiana transplant Jake Swanson. Swanson shared that post-race car prep typically happens late at night due to the intense Midwest humidity. Taking his advice, the SGR team plans to service their cars in hotel parking lots after races, ensuring they rest during the day and stay cool before hitting the track each evening. Fans unable to attend Indiana Midget Week in person can catch all the action live with a Flo Racing subscription. For more details, visit FloRacing.com. This marks the Lakeside, California-based team's first appearance at Placerville since a dominant showing in 2022. SGR's last outing at the red clay oval was as part of the show at the three-night Hangtown 100 in November 2022, which was co-sanctioned by the California Lightning Sprint Car Series and Bay Cities Racing Association. The team swept all three main events that weekend: San Diego's AJ Bender took victories on the first two nights, with Grant Sexton finishing second and sixth. On the final night, it was 17-year-old Grant's turn to shine, claiming the win with Bender right behind in second. Brent, a three-time lightning sprint car series champion, also made all three main events in 2022, finishing fifth, 12th, and 15th. This Friday, Brent returns to the seat for one night only before heading off for his annual vacation in Cabo San Lucas. He enters the weekend ranked fourth in USCS points, just four digits out of third. In four starts this season, Brent's best finish was a fifth-place showing at Ocean Speedway on March 28. Grant, now 20, will be racing both nights. Thus far, he has made two USCS starts in 2025. He earned an eighth-place finish at Ventura Raceway on March 8 and was poised for a top-five finish at Bakersfield on April 12 before contact with another car knocked him out of contention, resulting in a 17th-place finish. - Dominic Scelzi surges for 10th career SCCT win on Saturday in Merced
Merced, CA…Dominic Scelzi outdueled young Braden Chiaramonte and withstood a late charge from Dominic Gorden to snag his 10th career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour victory on Saturday. Scelzi's $3,000 triumph at Merced Speedway made him the first repeat SCCT winner at the track. It came aboard the familiar Scelzi Ent. / Red Rose Transportation No. 41 mount. "It's great to be up here in victory lane tonight after running second at the SCCT opener in March," Scelzi said. "The Tiner-Hirst cars are always fast, and Braden Chiaramonte really made me work for it at times. Then Dominic Gorden came after me late and kept me on my toes. He's such a good driver and really could be racing anywhere. I want to thank my entire team for giving me an amazing car and my whole family for their support." The racing was intense right from the drop of the green flag in the 35-lap Shop Kyle Larson main event. Scelzi jumped out front but had Chiaramonte and Modesto's Tony Gomes not far behind. Chiaramonte and Gomes fought tooth and nail for the runner up spot, before the El Cajon youngster charged after Scelzi. With 15 circuits complete, Chiaramonte was able to make the pass for the top-spot, as the duo battled back and forth until a caution came out. On the restart Scelzi then blasted to the high side and made a beautiful pass to regain the point with 18 circuits down. Shortly after that, Chiaramonte's run came to a slowdown with a flat tire, relegating him to the rear. Clovis driver Dominic Gorden had run in the top five since lap 10 and entered the picture up front with just over 10 laps remaining. He took advantage of the choose cone following a yellow flag to solidify second and began to hound Scelzi relentlessly for the lead. With race fans on the edge of their seats the pair entered lapped traffic and looked to be headed for a shootout over the closing stages. A big moment of the race then occurred with just a few laps left, however, when contact sent Justin Sanders upside down. Sanders had transferred out of the B-main and put on a thrilling charge from 22nd starting in the feature. He got to as high as fifth at one point but suffered an unfortunate DNF just prior to the finish. Scelzi led the final three laps to bring home the victory over Gorden, Gomes, Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Kaleb Montgomery and Redding's Max Mittry in the top five. Montgomery started 14th on the grid and was fun to watch as always picking his way through the field to end up fourth. The final circuits featured a tremendous duel between Gomes, Montgomery and Mittry for the final spot on the podium. Rounding out the top 10 were Ashton Torgerson, Tanner Carrick, 17th starter Jodie Robinson, 19th starting Grant Duinkerken and Mariah Ede. A strong field of 43 cars competed with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour on Saturday. - SCCT heads for Merced Speedway this Saturday April 19
Merced, CA…Over the last handful of years Merced Speedway has established itself as one of the more popular dirt tracks in California. This Saturday night, the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour will compete at the bullring for the second round of the season. The Merced Speedway happens to be one of the more centrally located tracks in California, which should make for a solid field from throughout the Northern and Central part of our state. The always action-packed quarter mile lies one hour and 45 minutes from Sacramento and just under an hour from Fresno. "We are excited to host the Sprint Car Challenge Tour at Merced Speedway this Saturday," commented track GM Doug Lockwood. "We don't have that many Sprint Car shows in Merced, but when we do, it's always a special time. It should be an outstanding field of competitors this weekend and it's your only chance to catch a Winged Sprint Car event here until November, so hopefully everyone can come out and fill these grandstands." The www.shopkylelarson.com A-main will hand out $3,000-to-win/ $400-to-start on Saturday. The track will also host an Easter Egg/ Candy Hunt during intermission on the front stretch to celebrate Easter Weekend. Teams are asked to please bring some candy for the kids during it. Opening night with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour last month saw Shane Golobic race to his 17th career series win. This Saturday the Fremont veteran hopes to become the sixth different winner in as many SCCT races held at Merced Speedway. Fresno's Dominic Scelzi grabbed a Sprint Car Challenge Tour triumph at Merced in 2023 and recorded a runner-up finish during the SCCT opener in March. The two-time NARC champion is always a favorite in the Golden State and should be certain contender at the "Clash on the High Banks." Aromas driver Justin Sanders is fresh off a $10,000 score at the Mini Gold Cup and looks to back that up with a Merced Speedway victory on Saturday. Sanders was victorious during the SCCT stop at the track last season and brought home a top five at the opener in March. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour made its Merced debut in 2019, an event claimed by Roseville's Jodie Robinson, who has shown immense speed so far this year driving for Weiher Racing once again. More drivers looking to take home the top prize at the Clash on the High Banks will include 2021 Merced SCCT winner Colby Copeland from Roseville, Sacramento's Austin Wood, Suisun City's Chance Grasty, Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, Clovis' Dominic Gorden, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery, Hanford's DJ Netto, recent Ocean Speedway winner Seth Standley of Yuba City, Placerville's Shane Hopkins, Marysville brothers Carson and Dawson Hammes, Livermore's Travis Labat, Arizona driver Corbin Rueschenberg, Brentwood's Adriana Demartini, Fresno's Mariah Ede and others. - AFTER BRENT SEXTON'S CAREER BEST 410 SPRINT CAR FINISH, SEXTON GATLIN RACING HEADS TO ARIZONA
(Lakeside, CA, April 7, 2025) Veteran driver Brent Sexton made the long trek to Ocean Speedway a memorable one when he recorded the best finish in his 410 sprint car career by placing fifth in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series 30-lap main event in Watsonville, California. Twenty-four hours later, he finished 12th when the second-year series made its first appearance at the Merced Speedway. This Friday and Saturday, April 11th and 12th, the veteran driver and his youngest son, Grant, are heading to the Central Arizona Raceway for two nights of racing with the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Sexton first raced a full-sized sprint car with the USAC/CRA Series two years ago. However, there was a huge difference between that car and the one he is driving today. For those initial races in 2023 and all of 2024, he was powered by a 360 engine. At times, that was like taking a gun to a knife fight as he was competing against full fields of 410 sprint cars. While he held his own, there was only so much he could do, and at times, that was frustrating. Sexton, who is a three-time lightning sprint car champion, decided to up his game for 2025. He purchased a 410 engine to run with both USAC/CRA and the USCS. "Somebody compared it to some of the motorcross stuff we used to do saying it was like comparing a two-stroke to a four stroke," the veteran driver said in mid-March. "It is definitely an eye opener and I give respect to the guys who have been driving those (410s) for so long. I love it. It takes more throttle control. Not that I had much throttle control before. It is definitely a discipline thing for sure." For Sexton to record his best 410 finish at Ocean Speedway was kind of surprising. It was his fourth start with the more powerful engine. What was unexpected was the fact that he did it at a track he had never been on during his long racing career. The likeable racer started the weekend by qualifying third fastest in his group at 13.375. That time was also good enough for 10th best in the 19-car field. He started fourth, and led much of his heat race before ending up second. So far, so good, but the main event on the famous Santa Cruz County oval would end up being the icing on an extremely sweet cake. Starting seventh, he was immediately in the thick of the battle. Using the top and the bottom of the track, he actually moved all the way up to fourth at one point. Likewise, he also drifted back to eighth or ninth. Sexton kept his focus straight and by the time the race ended, he was fifth at the checkers. "It was so much fun," he said about the race. "I loved the track, and I love my 410. I am having the time of my life. To finish fifth the first time ever at the track, that is cool. I am happy." After Watsonville, it was on to Merced, a track Sexton is more familiar with from his lightning sprint car days. However, things did not go quite as well, and he finished 12th in the A main event. This Friday and Saturday, the Central Arizona Speedway will be a new track for SGR drivers Brent and Grant. Recently renovated, the speedy oval is now a showpiece track that will be hosting the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars for the first time. Located in Casa Grande on the Pinal County Fairgrounds at 512 S 11 Mile Corner Road, the track is about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. Adult tickets for the shows are $25.00 each night. Active military and seniors get in for $20.00. For young adults ages 12-17, it is $15.00. Kids 11 and under are free. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. each night with racing at 7:00.
