- FLAT TIRE SPOILS EDDIE TAFOYA JR'S HOMECOMING
(Chino, CA, September 30, 2023) After spending the majority of his season on the road with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, Eddie Tafoya Jr. returned to his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for the Glenn Howard Classic. Unfortunately, the Chino Hills, California racer's triumphant return home was spoiled by a flat tire with 10 laps to go in the race. Competing on the West Coast for the first time in seven months, the handsome 26-year-old came out firing on all cylinders before the appreciative crowd. Twenty-three other cars showed up for the race on the West Coast's premiere dirt track. Tafoya topped them all with the fastest lap in hot laps. Minutes later when it counted, he recorded the quickest qualifying time when he toured the half-mile clay oval in 16.381. That was his first-ever fast qualifying effort at Perris and his second ever in the series. His first came in 2022 at the Ventura Raceway. Being the fastest qualifier meant Tafoya had to start sixth in his heat race. Later in the night, the best he could start in the main was sixth. In order to do that, he had to finish fourth or better in the 10-lap heat. Anything worse than that and he would have to start seventh in the main event with one more fast car in front of him. The now-seasoned veteran driver did what he had to do and placed fourth in the heat. Like it proved to be in hot laps, qualifying and his heat race, the eye-catching silver #51T was fast in the 30-lap main event. Make that very fast. For the first 1/3 of the race, he was in a battle with several foes as he attempted to move forward. Finally, around lap 10, he made his move and began picking off cars and heading towards the front of the pack. "The first 10 laps I think there was seven of us all over the place," Tafoya said of the early portion of the main. "I was just kind of hanging out and seeing what the guys were doing. Then about lap 10, I started making moves and getting runs on people. I even got three of them at one time coming out of two." His charge toward the head of the pack had the fans on the edges of their seats in anticipation of a tremendous battle for the first-place check and trophy. However, bad luck intervened and it cost him from having a chance to win to finishing a frustrating 18th. "When I got to Tommy (leader and eventual race winner Tommy Malcolm), we had a restart and I kind of stayed with him for a lap or two," the confident racer continued. "Then we had another caution and I could start to hear my tire and started seeing my hood lean the other way. So I knew something was going away. I hung with him for a couple of laps even with it going down. The last restart we had it was completely flat and I could not do anything with it." The car was so good all night long that the team made very few changes. What changes they made were speculation and they proved to work. "We made some changes, but not because I was uncomfortable or anything," the 26-year-old racer said regarding the early portion of the night. "The changes we made were just trying to keep up with the track and what we thought it was going to do. I had not even touched my shocks yet by the time I got the flat. I still had a lot left and we were definitely coming forward and I think we were the car to beat." Tafoya's concentration on competing in the Midwest this year paid big dividends on his first race back at the track where he began racing sprint cars. If not for the flat, he may have picked up the "W." "It is a huge deal," Tafoya said when asked if racing with the USAC National Series had anything to do with his best Perris performance. "Usually (at Perris) I am either quick in hot laps, or qualifying, or win the heat race or something like that. But to have that speed all night long, every time we were out there, shows that the intensity I have been racing with (on the USAC National tour) is helping. Here you can wait around a little bit and see what people are doing. Back there if you wait around for half a lap you will get passed by three cars. You definitely need to be on your toes and keep trying to go forward." Great news for fans and bad news for the competition is the fact that Tafoya will finish out his season at the final four USAC/CRA races of 2023. First up will be a trip to Arizona's 1/3 mile-banked Mohave Valley Raceway on October 14th. That will be followed by another trip to the "Copper State" on the first weekend in November for the annual Western World Championships. He will then finish the season at Perris on November 11th. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. BACK AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY NIGHT
(Chino, CA, September 22, 2023) The 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Gun Sprint Car champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, Eddie Tafoya Jr., will be back on his old stomping grounds, Perris Auto Speedway, for the Glenn Howard Classic this Saturday night. It will be his first race back in So Cal since April. He will be staying on the home front to finish out the last five races in the USAC/CRA Series. Last offseason Tafoya, who lives in Chino Hills, California, announced his intention to spend much of the season competing in the toughest traditional sprint car series in the world, the USAC National Sprint Cars. That is just what he did. Following his original plans, he started the year in Florida and contested 20 races with the national group. Six other races were rained out and he ran two open shows. In addition, he contested three USAC/CRA races earlier in the year. Hitting so many new tracks, Tafoya was on what seemed like foreign soil. Yet, for the most part, he did not ask a lot of questions. "I mean, I don't really ask too many questions too often," Tafoya said. "I try to listen to people. I don't really go out of my way to ask questions. We just try to figure it out. I think that is a good way for me to learn. Just trying things. I have to figure out how to do these things and not have someone helping me all of the time and spoon-feeding me. It feels good when you get in the main and you know that you and your guys did it all by yourselves." Tafoya did not cherry-pick the easy races with the National Series for his 2023 schedule. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He opted in for races at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway, Iowa's Knoxville Raceway, the grueling Indiana Sprint Week, and Kokomo's Smackdown. Those tracks accounted for 14 of his 20 starts back there. They are some of the fastest, most competitive tracks in the country and they draw the toughest drivers. That level of competition can be very tough in more ways than one. Bent parts and broken pieces are one of the hazards of the game. However, the smooth-driving Tafoya managed to steer clear of the mayhem. That is a huge benefit to any racing program and a team's finances, too. "Knock on wood, so far, we have hurt one radius rod and one drag link, that was it," Tafoya said. "That was on the same night during Sprint Week. We have been pretty fortunate to keep our wheels clean this year. Last year or the year before we picked up a lot of speed and had some big crashes and wrecked our stuff. That kind of set us back for a couple months trying to figure things out and get the ball rolling again. When you can show up every night and keep driving it (without damage), it definitely benefits you in the long run." "I feel pretty good," Tafoya answered when asked if he was happy with the way things went on the national tour. "The nights I was good, I had bad luck or adversity. You know, I pulled a bad pill or we barely missed transfers. At Texarkana, I qualified 17th. Three-tenths would have put me in eighth place I think it was. Things like that. When you are competing at that level, things just kind of have to fall in place." In addition to the tracks Tafoya had competed on in the past, he was on some new ones this year. He thinks going to tracks he had never been to before helps. "I would say it helps with experience," he explained. "You see a lot of different stuff. When you come back to places you do know and there is something different, you can lean on your notebook and your memory bank. Maybe you have seen something like that before and can adjust for it." Tafoya closed out the USAC National Series portion of his season with races at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, and Texarkana 67 Raceway in Arkansas two weeks ago. He qualified for both main events through the heat races. At Devil's Bowl, he placed second in his heat. He started 22nd in the main on the big, fast track and drove forward to 18th. The first Texarkana race was rained out, but in the finale, he finished fourth in his heat and 20th in the main. For fans who want to see Tafoya and the other USAC/CRA stars in action on Saturday, the spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. For fans 65 years of age and older, it is $25.00. For kids six to 12 it is just $5.00 and children five and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets are available until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. They can be purchased online at tix.com or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to buy advance tickets, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds (home of the Southern California Fair), one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego. To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway, and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS RACING IN TEXAS AND ARKANSAS THIS WEEK
(Chino, CA, September 5, 2023) Eddie Tafoya Jr. headed back to the airport on Wednesday to get ready for the USAC National Sprint Car Series races this week in Texas and Arkansas. On Thursday, September 7th, he will be at the famous half-mile high-banked Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. He will then journey to Texarkana, Arkansas for races on Friday and Saturday at the semi-banked 1/4 mile Texarkana 67 Speedway. For Tafoya, it will be his initial appearance on each of the tracks. The driver, who lives 35 miles east of Los Angeles in Chino Hills, California, was slated to make his Devils Bowl debut on April 28th and 29th. However, those races, along with one at the Rocket Raceway in Petty, Texas the night before, were all rained out. He salvaged the wet trip by high-tailing it to the I70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri to finish seventh in a POWRi War Sprint Car Series race on April 29th. From there he headed northeast to the Eldora Speedway for his initial appearance on the famous high banks during the first week in May. On the western Ohio track, he qualified for both USAC National Sprint Car mains on the Tony Stewart-owned oval placing 18th and 19th. Tafoya made a couple of sojourns to Indiana over the past couple of months. The first came in late July when he competed in the grinding Indiana Sprint Week making the A main event at the legendary Terre Haute Action Track and the Bloomington Speedway. He concluded that trip with another main event appearance in a Boss race at the Paragon Speedway. Results from all of Tafoya's 2023 racing endeavors are at the end of this release. Not long after the Indiana Sprint Week trip, Tafoya returned to the "Hoosier State" for the prestigious 12th Annual Smackdown at "Indiana's Baddest Bull Ring," the Kokomo Speedway. As has been the case with Tafoya most of the year, the three nights of racing were in the USAC National Sprint Car Series. For the pleasant driver who turned 26 years old earlier in the season, things did not go the way he wanted at Kokomo. However, he is fired up and ready to compete in the world's premiere traditional sprint car series once again this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. After the conclusion of the Smackdown, Tafoya and the crew drove the team hauler to Texas for this week's race. They left it there and hopped on a flight home to California. They flew back to Texas Wednesday morning to get the car ready for this week's action. Even though he has not raced the full USAC National Series schedule, the personable driver is still 25th in the championship standings and is only 16 points out of 23rd heading into the three races. For fans not able to make it to Texas and Arkansas for the races, all three nights will be shown live on Flo Racing. Colton Cottle won the Vince Osman Memorial feature Sunday night at Kokomo Speedway.
- EDDIE TAFOYA JR. IS READY FOR 12TH ANNUAL SMACKDOWN AT THE KOKOMO SPEEDWAY
(Chino, CA, August 24, 2023) After a quick south-of-the-border vacation, Southern California sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will contest one of traditional sprint car racing's biggest events, the 12th Annual Smackdown at Indiana's "Baddest Bull Ring," the Kokomo Speedway. The three-day show, which features the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Cars, will begin tonight, August 24th, and conclude on Saturday the 26th. The prestigious race will pay the biggest purse in Indiana sprint car racing history. For 26-year-old Tafoya, it will be his third appearance in the Smackdown. Two years ago he qualified into the A main event and placed 19th. Last season's efforts came to a premature end after he got tangled up in somebody else's mistake and got upside down. Recently, Tafoya got off to a slow start in the grueling Indiana Sprint Week missing the first four main events. However, he returned to form in the last three races of the eight-race series at the Terre Haute Action Track, Lincoln Park Speedway, and Bloomington Speedway. He improved on his qualifying times and transferred from his heat straight into the main event each night. In those three A mains, he placed 19th, 18th, and 19th respectively. The final night of Indiana Sprint Week was slated to take place at the Tri-City Speedway in Haubstaudt. However, ominous weather prompted the Chino, California-based team to hightail two hours south to a Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Car Series race at the Paragon Speedway. It was Tafoya's first BOSS race and his first appearance at Paragon. He came out of the box qualifying second in his eight-car group with a lap of 16.459. As well as being second in his group, he was 20th overall of the 42 cars on hand. He started and finished third in his heat. Unfortunately, a 15th-place start was followed by a 20th-place finish in the main. Even though the personable Southern California racer has only competed in 14 of the first 28 USAC National races in 2023, he is ranked 25th in the series standings going into the Smackdown. For fans who are not in Indiana to watch Tafoya at the Smackdown, all three nights will be shown live on Flo Racing. (Chino, CA, July 19, 2023) Southern California sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. returns to racing this coming Friday night when the 2023 NOS Energy USAC Indiana Sprint Week Presented by Honest Abe Roofing kicks off. The mini-series within the USAC National Series will see Tafoya race eight times, on eight different tracks in nine days. For Tafoya, who recently turned 26 years old, it will be his third sojourn east to compete with the USAC National Series this year. Making the decision to confine most of his racing to the Midwest-based series, Friday will be his 11th race of the season that commenced in Florida in February. In reality, it should have been his 20th start of the year. However, seven of the races on his schedule were knocked out by rain. Thus far he has made six starts with USAC National and has qualified for the A main four times. His best finish of the four was a 13th-place result at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida on February 14th. Closer to home, the Chino Hills, California habitant has started three races in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. His best finishes in the west coast series came on his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, where he placed ninth on March 18th and eighth on April 15th. Tafoya started one other race in 2023 and that came at the I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri on April 29th. There he scored his best finish of the year when he came home in seventh. After his appearance at GAS City on the 21st, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year will race at the Kokomo Speedway, Lawrenceburg Speedway, and Circle City Speedway from July 22nd through the 24th. On the 25th, Tafoya and the other racers will get one night off to work on their cars, and get some rest. Starting up again on the 26th, it will be four straight nights of action at the Terre Haute Action Track, Lincoln Park Speedway, Bloomington Speedway and finally winding up at the Tri-State Speedway. Tafoya, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, last appeared at Indiana Sprint Week in 2021. He made the main events at Terre Haute and Tri-State and finished 22nd in both. It should be noted that at Terre Haute, he had a good run going before getting clobbered on the back straight and knocked out of the race. After Indiana Sprint Week, Tafoya is slated to return to the Hoosier State for the 12th annual SmackDown at the Kokomo Speedway on August 24th, 25th and 26th. For fans who cannot make it to Indiana to watch Tafoya at Indiana Sprint Week, all eight of the races will be shown on live Flo Racing.
