- Thornton Makes History - Winning Second Straight Firecracker 100
SARVER, PA (June 22, 2024) - No one in the 18-year history of the Firecracker 100 Presented by Big River Steel had ever won the crown jewel event in back-to-back years until Saturday night. Ricky Thornton Jr. led the last 55 laps to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event earning $50,000 for his 11th series win of the season. In a race that saw six lead changes among three different drivers, Thornton dominated the last half of the race finishing over 12 seconds ahead of Devin Moran who ran second. Moran earned the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race coming from his 16th starting spot - passing Mike Marlar on lap 97 to gain the runner-up position. Marlar came home in third followed by Jonathan Davenport and Drake Troutman, who ran inside the top three until the waning laps of the race. Thornton grabbed the lead at the start of the race - leading the first two laps as he and Troutman ran door-to-door until Troutman, who was starting his first Firecracker 100 cleared Thornton to take over the lead for two circuits. Troutman's spot at the top was short-lived as Marlar went to the lead on lap five. Marlar held off Troutman and Thornton as back-to-back cautions slowed the field on laps 10 and 11. On what would be the final restart of the race Thornton cleared Troutman for second and set his sights on regaining the lead from Marlar. Marlar held the point until lap 38 when Thornton edged ahead, but a lap later Marlar would retake the lead which he held until lap 45 when Thornton again got by Marlar for the lead that he never relinquished. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 39th time in his career Thornton led 59 laps to make Firecracker 100 history by winning the event in consecutive seasons for the first time since it started in 2007. "There was a few times I would get to a lapped car and could never drive hard enough to get by him, and it would really slow my pace down. One time I tried to slow down in three and four and actually about went off the top, so I got into a good rhythm from there on. When this track is fast it's really fast, but once it's slick it's probably slicker than East Bay. It kind of reminds me of All-Tech, where for some reason we are really good there. I think our package suits this style of racetrack once it gets super clean and really slick and it got it done for us." Moran's brilliant charge needed to include a caution flag to have any shot at Thornton, but that never happened as the race went the final 89 laps without a yellow flag. "I was mainly just bummed when I messed up in the heat race and that's why we had to start 16th and when Ricky's on the front row it makes it almost impossible. Good job and congrats to those guys. Good job to my crew I shouldn't be bummed that I ran second, but I just know how good of a race car we had, and I didn't give ourselves a chance. They did an awesome job with the racetrack, I didn't expect it to be that wet I ran out of tearoffs after about ten laps. We didn't have that many cautions and to come up there without many cautions is pretty cool and we will take it." Marlar, who was seeking his first career Firecracker 100 victory after two runner-up finishes in the event rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "I just can't complete the corner. Ricky and Devin's cars from the center out can turn left and get the straight line down the straightaway better than me and I am headed the wrong way all the time in that area. I have to bend the car and manipulate it too much. I knew I was in trouble. I just tried to do what I could do, but I was struggling pretty bad there, and those guys were just better. Ricky raced me really good, and Devin did too, and it was fun racing on this track." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Hoker Trucking, Coltman Farms, Dyno One Inc., West Side Tractor Sales, Bilstein Shocks, EMD Wraps, Sunoco Race Fuels, Murty Farms, and Strange Oval. Completing the top ten were Tim McCreadie, Garrett Alberson, Mason Zeigler, Hudson O'Neal, and Gregg Satterlee. - Troutman and Moran Highlight Friday Prelims at Lernerville
SARVER, PA (June 21, 2024) - Drake Troutman and Devin Moran scored Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series preliminary feature wins on Friday night at Lernerville Speedway. Troutman earned his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory in the first 25-lap race earning $5,000 for his win. Moran scored his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the year - also pocketing $5,000 for winning the second main event of the night. Troutman outran Ross Robinson, Tim McCreadie, Garrett Alberson, and Gregg Satterlee for the win in the first feature event. Mason Zeigler and Troutman had a great battle for the top spot - trading the lead four times in the first nine laps of the race until Troutman was able to gain some breathing room over Zeigler at that point. McCreadie moved to second on lap 12 as he and Robinson raced side-by-side for several laps until the final circuit when Robinson was able to edge out the two-time champion at the finish. Troutman's winning margin was 0.443 seconds. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the first time in his career, Troutman became the 91st different driver to win a series race. "I don't even know what to say to be honest with you," said the 19-year-old from Hyndman, Pennsylvania. "I didn't think we would get one of those for a while for sure. I don't know what to say, I am speechless. I've just got a bunch of kids working for me," as his voice trailed off. "There was a pretty big cushion up there on the top side. We were just able to really race good there on the bottom. This Longhorn Chassis is really good. We've fought a lot of bad luck and just things happening, we are learning everyday on what not to do. We wanted to put on a good show for you fans so I guess we will see what we have for tomorrow night. This one's for my dad for sure." Robinson, who ran fourth in the Show-Me 100 last month finished in the runner-up spot in the first preliminary feature after getting by McCreadie on the final lap. "That's cool for Drake. He's a darn good kid and he's a heck of a shoe so I mean he earned it. He gets it done at a place I am not that comfortable at I can't run the top like he can. It's really cool to be up here on the podium again." McCreadie continues to make strides with the Rocket1 team as he earned another Big River Steel Podium finish, after running as high as second in the race. "Congrats to him [Troutman]. He's a really good kid. He races as hard as he can, and he really doesn't get into anybody out here. It's hard to race and not touch anybody. Like I said they are good people, and he did a great job tonight." The winner's DTR Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by RFI Resources, Wheeler Fleet Solutions, Stone Natural Resources, Smith Warehouse, Jerry's Siding, Roofing, and Windows, Certain Teed, Thunderhill Trucking, Coltman Farms. Morocco Welding, Glassmere, Shaffer Construction, Shoe's Diesel Repair, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Bilstein Shocks. Completing the top ten in the first feature were Mason Zeigler, Jared Miley, Tyler Wyant, Jimmy Owens, and Trevor Collins. The second feature saw defending Lernerville track champion and current points leader Michael Norris bolt from his pole starting spot to take the lead. Norris held the lead until he bumped the cushion in turn two which allowed Moran to take over the lead on lap six. Norris then entered turn one at full speed and went over the turn one embankment after making contact with the outside wall to bring out the first caution of the race. Moran then held a steady lead over the field as Thornton tried to chase him down. A caution with 16 laps scored allowed Thornton and Marlar to restart behind Moran. Moran pulled away in the final nine laps as Marlar got by Thornton on lap 20 to take second where he stayed in until the checkers fell. Hudson O'Neal and Jonathan Davenport rounded out the top five. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 11th time in his career Moran was needing a good run after suffering DNF the night before. Moran commented in Victory Lane regarding the track prep done before the second feature began. "I mean I knew it was hard [the racing surface]. I was kind of giggling about it, everybody else was freaking out about it. We really didn't do anything, didn't change tires like everybody else did. It worked out in our favor. The guys did a good job." "It's awesome to finally get a win here. This is such a historic track, and they always do a great job on the racetrack and I love coming here. I am glad to get my first win at Lernerville and it would be awesome to get one tomorrow night in front of all of the Big River Steel people." Marlar, who started eighth climbed to second at the finish in his Skyline Motorsports entry. "We probably get to start out front in a heat race tomorrow night. If you can win or don't win a heat race you are still pretty good in the feature so that's a big help. I am really happy to be back up here on the podium tonight. I had a really good car tonight even though I started back there a ways." Thornton rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "I had a good car I felt like we had the wrong tire there. They watered it and it looked like it would be a lot muddier than it was. Congrats to Devin, his stuff was pretty good. Hopefully it sets us up for a good starting spot in a heat race tomorrow." The winner's Roger Sellers, Double Down Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, C&W Trucking, Lazydays RV, Red Oak Pub, CarSourceAuto.com, Pee Wee's Wrecker Service, Lincoln Smith Racing, Haulin' Haskell's, Smoky Mountain Speedway, and Bilstein Shocks Completing the top ten in the second feature were Max Blair, Ken Schaltenbrand, Chub Frank, Carson Ferguson, and Spencer Hughes. - Thornton and Davenport Take Thursday Prelims at Lernerville
SARVER, PA (June 20, 2024) - Ricky Thornton Jr. and Jonathan Davenport spilt the 25 lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series features on Thursday night at Lernerville Speedway. Thornton captured the first 25-lap main worth $5,000 for his tenth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of 2024. Mike Marlar was second followed by Garrett Alberson, Michael Norris, and Jimmy Owens. Thornton received the most pressure during the race from Devin Moran who ran in second from lap nine to lap 22 when he slowed in turn two with a flat right rear tire. His night would come to an end after bringing out the final caution of the race. Marlar then picked up the second spot and tried valiantly to stay with Thornton but fell 0.555 seconds short at the finish. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 38th time in his career, Thornton broke a tie for sixth-place with Tim McCreadie on the series' all-time win list. Thornton, who is the reigning Firecracker 100 winner got off to a good for the weekend. "It was super technical tonight. I felt like getting in both turns the cushion was over the top. I am thankful for that first yellow, because Devin drove right around us on the top. I didn't really know if the bottom or the top was going to be good, and I fired off so good on the bottom and I thought the bottom was going to be really good. When Devin drove by me I think he might have set sail. I think he might have won." Marlar, who started fifth moved to second after Moran's departure and had one last shot at Thornton in a three-lap shootout at the end. "I knew when he had those three laps in the clean air, I wasn't going to be able to pass him. I hated to see that caution come out, but it was going to be hard to get by him anyway. It was treacherous there on that cushion, it will bite you. I as wanting to run it so bad and after what I seen happen to Devin, I thought man after three or four nights of bad finishes I need to get something going here. I wanted to get it back to the trailer without wrecking." "That restart was good for us," said Alberson who rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "I hated what happened to Devin there I think he shredded a tire. That was a bummer for him. He was really having a good night. I got by Hud [O'Neal] there. We are lacking just a little bit to run up front with these guys for the lead, so we've got to work on it. I am super happy to be up here with these guys on the podium." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Hoker Trucking, Coltman Farms, Dyno One, Inc., West Side Tractor Sales, Bilstein Shocks, EMD Wraps, Sunoco Race Fuels, Murty Farms, and Strange Oval. Completing the top ten in the first feature were Hudson O'Neal, Tim McCreadie, Spencer Hughes, Max Blair, and Mason Zeigler. Davenport led wire-to-wire in the second 25 lapper also worth $5,000 for his 78th career win with the tour. Chub Frank was second followed by Drake Troutman, Daulton Wilson, and Ross Robinson. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the fourth time this season, Davenport had to wait through several caution flags to get the win. "We weren't as good after about the third time when you are hit in the left rear tire on the restarts. I don't know if we bent a shock or whatever we will have to check that out. We were o.k. last weekend, but we weren't great. This car performs better than that, so we took this whole thing apart, and we found a few things that just wasn't right about it. So, we brought it here and obviously it was a lot better. I like the place I just have never been able to figure it out," said Davenport who is seeking his first-ever win in the Firecracker 100 on Saturday night. Frank, who was looking for his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win in 18 years, came from the sixth starting spot and stayed in the hunt until the checkers fell coming home runner-up. "I needed a little more bottom on the track. He [Davenport] got up on top and that top was a little treacherous, we saw some of those other guys having trouble up there. I ran the top a couple of times on the restart, but there was no way I was staying up there. I have already flipped once this week so there was no reason to go up there. I really like this car and I really don't want to flip it. I probably just needed a little more bottom to have a chance to run with him. It started drying out pretty bad on the bottom and I just couldn't get off the corner as good as I could earlier." Troutman, who currently holds down the second spot in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year chase rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. "We definitely have our confidence up after our run tonight. These boys are like a bunch of dogs here this week after we got pretty tore up at Smoky Mountain last week. I know this is split features, but it feels good to be up here with these guys. It's been a dream come true to race with these guys week-in and week-out. I am learning everyday. I just have to thank all of my guys on the crew that work for me."
