- Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Chisholm rolls into King of America XIV with big momentum
WHEATLAND, MO. (March 25, 2025) - Just a few days after earning a career-defining financial haul in the Dirt Modified world, Jim Chisholm knows it's time to turn the page and focus on the King of America XIV at Lucas Oil Speedway. The three-night United States Modified Touring Series show opens on Thursday with a $3,000-to-win feature and picks up momentum with a $5,000 prize to Friday's winner. Of course, all eyes will be on the $20,000-to-win prize in Saturday's grand finale. For the 22-year-old Chisholm, who broke through in 2024 to win the USMTS National Championship, confidence is running high. The Osage, Iowa, native took command with a couple of laps remaining to capture $100,000 at last Saturday's XR Dominator at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Pryor, Okla. "Monetary-wise, the biggest for sure," Chisholm said of where the win ranks on his career list. "Definitely one of the biggest races of my career going forward and might ever be. Just a really cool thing to have them put on shows like this and race for that kind of money. "The confidence is definitely there. It's a short turnaround, but we have short turnarounds a lot. You always come back to the shop and regroup. What happened last week is last week and you really can't take that into consideration this week. You just go at this next race like it's another big one and try your best to win it." Dan Ebert of Lake Shore, Minn., is reigning champion of the USMTS portion of the King of America with a win in 2023 as last year's event was rained out at Humboldt Speedway. There have been 11 different winners over the years as the best of Modified racing gather for the early season showdown. The event will include USRA Stock Cars paying $1,000-to-win Thursday, $2,000-to-win Friday and $3,000 to win Saturday. USRA B-Mods will be paying $1,000 to win Thursday, $2,000 to win Friday and $3,000 to win Saturday. For Chisholm, the move of the King of America to Lucas Oil Speedway for the first time seems particularly timely. The south-central Missouri oval is a place that Chisholm never cared for - until last summer when he swept USMTS features on back-to-back nights at Wheatland. The opener saw him prevail over veteran Terry Phillips in a back-and-forth duel over the last half of the race. That one was named Lucas Oil Speedway's 2024 Race of the Year. Chisholm said he doesn't have a good answer for why his fortunes suddenly took a positive turn at Wheatland, though a new dirt surface for the 2024 season could have played a factor. "It definitely drove like it was new dirt and reminded a lot of what we run at home," Chisholm said. "It's stuff you can't push your stuff that hard. If you push, you go slower. It kind of fits into my driving style. Just finding the limit of the car you can run it at and not overstepping that boundary. "It raced super good last year. We were luckily able to start up front some of those shows and have good runs. That's kind of the goal we're setting for ourselves this time as well. I'm super-excited to come back there." Chisholm returns as the defending USMTS champion after edging out Jake Timm for his first championship. The title meant a ton for a youngster who grew up watching the USMTS stars visit nearby Deer Creek Speedway in family outings to the track. "It was one of those deals you watch them do the four-wide salute and you're like 'one of these days I want to be able to do that.' To be able to go out and win a couple of shows and be a contender in the points was huge, but to win the championship I'm still pretty speechless about that," Chisholm said. "There are a bunch of guys that are super fast and really tough to beat week in and week out. It's always a lot of fun to run with a group of guys who run so well together. You kind of know what to expect from them. They run you really hard and you run them really hard. At the end of the day, you go over and talk to them and go on to the next win." Which is exactly what he will try to do, putting that six-figure pay day behind him. "As marquee events go this King of America kind of ranks with the Fall Jamboree," Chisholm said. "It's the two original big Modified races. It's one of our biggest races of the year with the USMTS Series. We're gonna come out trying to win it, just like everyone else." With only three events in the books so far on the USMTS schedule, Chisholm is a mere nine points behind five-time series champ Rodney Sanders. Not only is it way too early to talk points, Chisholm said he despises points racing any time of the year. Winning is the sole focus in his mind. "To be honest, I think points racing is dumb and to act like you're racing for points will only end up hurting you," Chisholm said. "Every time you're at the race track your goal is to win. If you keep that in mind, the other stuff just kind of works out. Our goal every time is to try and win the race. If we come up short, we come up short and we'll try again next week." - Crigler goes wire-to-wire for 4 State Late Model win in Lucas Oil Speedway opener as Carroll, Galvan also prevail
WHEATLAND, MO. (March 22, 2025) - It was a dominant performance by Sawyer Crigler as Lucas Oil Speedway opened its season on Saturday night in the Late Model portion of March Full Body Madness. Crigler, a second-generation racer from Alton, Mo., led all 30 laps in a caution-free 4 State Late Model Series feature to outdistance Dustin Atkinson for the victory. Other feature winners in the March Full Body Madness program, attracting 99 entries in the four divisions, were Kenny Carroll (Hickamo Super Stocks) and Chase Galvan (SMSI Pure Stocks). The fourth and final feature, for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Stock Cars, was postponed by rain. Crigler's first Lucas Oil Speedway career win was never in doubt as he led from start-to-finish. He won six times on the 4 State Late Model Series in 2024. "This place is awesome," Crigler said in the victory lane. "The track was great. It was slick from top to bottom. It got a little rubbered up there at the end, but that was OK. This is the first race here with this series this year, so it's good to start it off with a win." It didn't take long for Crigler to drive away after starting on the pole as he opened a three-second gap over Joey Smith by lap five as reigning series champ Atkinson settled into third. Lapped traffic bogged the leader down by lap 10 with Smith cutting the deficit to 1.6 seconds. Once Crigler was able to get a bit of clearance from the heavy traffic, he was able to rebuild the command as a long caution-free run continued. Atkinson, meanwhile, slipped past Smith for second on lap 16 but Crigler was 3.5 seconds clear by then with no signs of letting up. Crigler stayed out of harm the rest of the way and finished 2.3 seconds in front of Atkinson for his first win of the season. Cole Wells rallied late to finish third with Smith finishing fourth and Andy Bryant fifth. Carroll makes late pass for Super Stocks win: Kenny Carroll made the winning pass as the white flag waved and held off race-long pacesetter Jared Hays to score the Hickamo Super Stocks feature victory. Hays started on the pole and by lap seven already had a 3.3-second lead over Tony Anglin with Carroll another second and a half behind Anglin. Hays caught lapped traffic by the mid point of the race on lap 10, which is when the first caution flew - and that served to wipe away Hays' big lead. After two more cautions, Taylor Carver zoomed from seventh to second by lap 14 and was putting heat on Hays when another caution slowed the action. But on the restart, Carver drifted high and was involved in a multi-car incident in turn two, taking him out of contention. Carroll came on strong after a lap-16 caution and zoomed around Hays on the high side coming to the white flag. The veteran driver and former Lucas Oil Speedway track champion from Camdenton held on from there and beat Hays by .665 seconds. "The last two (laps) were the easiest ones," Carroll said in victory lane. "There was a lot of thought going on the entire race, trying to think ahead between the bottom and top. It just worked out perfect." Tim Brown was third with Anglin fourth and Gary Clark fifth. SMSI Pure Stocks win to Galvan: Chase Galvan of Kansas City, Kan., led all 11 laps to win a weather-shortened SMSI Pure Stocks main event that was able to become official by just passing the halfway point before rain arrived. Third-starting Mason Beck was closing in on Galvan when a lap-six caution flew. After the restart it became a four-car tussle for the lead with Derek Brown and Bobby Brown joining the fray. But Galvan, who started on the pole, held onto the top spot, as another yellow flag came out with nine laps remaining. Beck fell out of contention on the restart when he had trouble in turn four. That's when rain began and the checkered flag waved at lap 11, making Galvan the winner with Derek Brown second, Bobby Brown third, Donnie Devers fourth and Payton McDowell fifth. - Shuman named new Lucas Oil Speedway assistant GM, competition director
WHEATLAND, MO. (March 20, 2025) - Casey Shuman, with nearly 30 years of experience as both a driver and a national touring series owner or director, has been appointed Lucas Oil Speedway's new Assistant General Manager and Competition Director. "We're thrilled to welcome someone with Casey's extensive experience and deep roots in the dirt-track racing world," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. Shuman, 45, has been General Manager at I-70 Motorsports Park for the last two seasons following a four-year stint as Series Director for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. He and wife Brooke owned and operated the WAR Sprint Car Series from 2015-19. Casey and Brooke live in Platte City, Mo., and have a daughter, Sawyer. "Ive always loved racing at Lucas Oil Speedway," said Shuman, a Tempe, Arizona native who started driving Sprint cars as a teenager and raced full-time for 20-plus years. Though he retired from full-time racing in 2015, he still occasionally gets behind the wheel of his open-wheel car. "I raced full-time for 20-22 years, but the promotion and series side of our industry always interested me," Shuman said. "I raced 6-8 times last year, and I'll likely do around the same this year. It's just enough to have some fun. Driving is no longer the focus of my career, but I still enjoy getting out there and having a good time." "When this position with Lucas Oil Speedway revealed itself, I knew it was the right time, and I'm excited for the opportunity to be part of this top tier staff and facility," Shuman said of accepting the Lucas Oil Speedway management position. "My dad raced for a living with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series when I was born. I've been around the racetrack since I was a kid and started racing Sprint cars as a teen. All these years later, I'm still a dedicated advocate for the sport that raised me and I'm looking forward to what's ahead for our team at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks in Wheatland, Missouri." Shuman said he's "ready to jump right into the season" when it begins this weekend with the March Full Body Madness on Saturday. Shuman replaces Ernie Leftwich, who resigned earlier this month to become series director of the Comp Cams Super Late Model Series. - Progressive American Flat Track coming to Lucas Oil Speedway, prompting Weekly Racing Series schedule adjustment
WHEATLAND, MO. (March 10, 2025) - Lucas Oil Speedway will play host to a new form of racing for the time with a late schedule addition for the 2025 season. The Progressive American Flat Track will hold its Round 6 at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, June 7. This completes the 2025 AFT schedule, filling the final "TBA" date with one of the nation's premier racing destinations on a schedule that includes Daytona International Speedway, among others. "We are excited to bring our fans a different type of racing and look forward to bringing AFT to the speedway for their first event with the speedway," Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said. "Lucas Oil Speedway has earned a reputation for hosting marquee events, and this flat track event will only add to the high-energy racing our fans have come to love." The addition of the AFT for that date will cause an alteration for the Pitts Homes and Realty Weekly Racing Series schedule as Round 5 featuring the five weekly classes will shift to May 17, which was originally an off weekend on the Lucas Oil Speedway schedule. With much of the AFT season already announced - including the Lima Half-Mile doubleheader and a fan-favorite West Coast Swing - this June 7 showdown finalizes the 2025 Progressive AFT calendar. Fans can expect bar-to-bar action from the Mission AFT SuperTwins class, the Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER class, and Build Train Race on Lucas Oil Speedway's 3/8-mile oval, alongside plenty of off-track fun at the Diamond Bar, Track Treasures Gift Shop, and Lake Lucas. Event times and admission prices will be announced in coming weeks. The 2025 Progressive American Flat Track season will launch this week with the Royal Enfield Short Track at DAYTONA at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7. Purchase your tickets at AmericanFlatTrack.com/Events. - Lucas Oil Speedway Champions Spotlight: Morton's personal racing heroes offer double support, inspiration
WHEATLAND, MO. (Dec. 23, 2024) - Whether JC Morton is representing one of his racing idols while driving his USRA B-Mod or chasing checkers behind the wheel of a Late Model, the Springfield driver is looking forward to another season of double duty at Lucas Oil Speedway. Morton earned his third Lucas Oil Speedway track championship in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods in 2024 while driving a Terry Phillips Bloodline chassis. With two feature victories and seven top-fives in 11 events, Morton cruised to the title by 145 points over Logan Smith. "We teamed up with Terry Phillips a season and a half ago and to turn around in my first full season with him, to win a championship, it's good," Morton said. "We've been close several times and lost by a couple of points here, by five points there, in the last 2-3 seasons. To be able to come out on top and to be in the Bloodline house car, that's huge." The 34-year-old Morton also was a contender in the Hermitage Lumber Late Model portion of the Weekly Racing Series as he wound up third in points behind Aurora's Justin Wells, another iconic Ozarks-area racing veteran. "I've watched Justin race since I was a kid," Morton said of Wells. "To be in a position I'm in, to be able to race with him, is a pretty cool deal. It puts it into a pretty full-circle perspective." Morton knows it won't be easy, but he has a goal of chasing two championships next season, in his Bloodline B-Mod and the Rocket-chassis Late Model owned by brothers Larry and Dale Moon from Sedalia. A hint of what could happen came in 2023 when Morton won features in the B-Mod and Late Model divisions on the same night. He wound up second in the B-Mod points and sixth in Late Models that season. The 2024 season wasn't quite as good in the Late Model. "We had plenty of top-five finishes in the Late Model, just didn't get any wins," Morton said of the past season. "I missed the first point night for the Late Models, as they started a week early. That's a 100-point swing when you miss a night, so it put me behind the 8-ball a little bit. "Larry, the car owner, is pouring everything he can into it to make it better. We made a bunch of moves in the off-season to improve. We should come out strong. He's constantly on the phone with Rocket and trying to fine-tune to get it better." Finding a way to derail Wells, who won 11 features last season in running away with a second straight track championship, is the tricky part. But Wells has indicated he might not run for another points title, which could open things up. Having Phillips, a Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer in his corner, is a great benefit for Morton. While Phillips no longer competes in the Late Model division, Morton said he's a tremendous resource if he has questions, no matter the car. "He's got a vast knowledge there," Morton said. "He's not in the technology side of it like he used to be, because he's not racing them anymore, but he's still able to make a phone call or a text and is able to find out what's happening. It helps. "I try not to push him a whole lot on that because he's not 100 percent involved on my Late Model world, but he still has so much knowledge. Like I think it was the USMTS race at Lucas last season, he made some suggestions (about the Late Model) and it was a lot better for us the second night." No matter what happens in the Late Model, Morton is a proven champion in the B-Mod and figures to only get better the more experience he gets in the Bloodline chassis with Phillips in his corner. "He's been around it so long and he's so good, it's hard not to take what he says and try it," Morton said of Phillips. "He's had so much success and has been an idol for me since I was a kid." Morton said he looks forward to winning as many races as he can in 2025 after scoring 10 feature victories overall last season. "The more races we're winning, the more cars we're gonna sell," Morton said of the B-Mod. "Then I'd like to capitalize on the Late Model deal, hit all the points shows and hopefully we can knock off a championship there. "It would be even cooler to have two championships. We'll just have to see how the season goes. We'd like to knock out two championships, but will just show up week in and week out and see how many races we can win." Things can get hectic while competing in two divisions. Morton gave his long-time B-Mod crew of dad Gene, Danny Fender and Rich Cooper a lot of credit. "They know what to do and I can bounce back and forth pretty easy," Morton said. "The Late Model crew, I have the two brothers and another brother, Gary, and one of their sons will help once in a while. But yeah, every once in a while it will get hectic, if we tear one up and we're rushing around, but for the most part, it's not too bad. "When it gets hot, it's a little more demanding - especially when we're racing back-to-back. I try to stay hydrated." Morton, who turns 35 in January, laughed while saying he still considers himself youthful. He credits daughters Zoey (12), Emmy (4) and son Huddy (four months) with keeping him on his toes and wife Destiny for keeping everyone pointed in the right direction. "I'm getting a little older and it does catch up with you at the end of the night," he said. "My girls keep me young. As long as I can keep up with them, I'll be OK." Sponsors on Morton's cars include Bloodline Race Cars, Yeoman Race Cars, Big Time Bail Bonds, R & R Graphics, Wehr's Machine, Integra, CPD Race Shocks, Keyser Manufacturing, Quarter Master, Sedalia Electric Motors and TNT Quick Time. "Without all of them we wouldn't be able to get up and down the road and race as much as we do," Morton said. Gift cards, season pass renewals available: Time is running short, but Lucas Oil Speedway is offering gift cards in any amount which would make terrific Christmas presents. The gift cards and can be used in various ways from tickets, to concessions to the Track Treasures Gift Shop in 2025. Season passes for the 2025 season, good for admission to all dirt-track events, also are available at a $50 discount for renewals through Dec. 31. Those renewals are $700 for adults and $600 for seniors (ages 62 and over). After Jan. 1, 2025, renewals will be $750 for adults and $650 for seniors (62 and over). New season-pass buyers maybe purchase passes starting on Feb. 1, at $750 for adults and $650 for seniors. Meanwhile, renewals for Show-Me 100 three-day reserved passes will be Jan. 1st through 31st with new Show-Me 100 passes going on sale Feb. 1.
