- CALISTOGA SPEEDWAY IS BACK IN ACTION WITH THE LOUIE VERMEIL CLASSIC
(8/25/25 - Andrew Kunas) Calistoga, CA ... A big weekend awaits the NARC King of the West Sprint Car Series as it takes part in the triumphant reopening of Calistoga Speedway for the Louie Vermeil Classic this Saturday and Sunday (August 30th-31st). Fans will have the opportunity to witness the best of both worlds as the USAC/CRA non-wing 410 sprint cars share this open wheel racing program. The historic half-mile clay oval located in Napa County has not seen race cars on track since 2019. The Louie Vermeil Classic was first run in 2008. After the track shuttered and was left without a promoter during the COVID-19 plagued 2020 season, the event was moved to Silver Dollar Speedway for 2021 before going on hiatus. With Calistoga opening back up, the event has restarted and returns to its original home, which was always regarded as the home track of the Northern Auto Racing Club sprint cars. The event honors Louie Vermeil, a large figure in California sprint car racing who helped found the Northern Auto Racing Club in 1960 and saw the association through its early decades, serving as president from 1965 to 1985. Vermeil also fielded several cars during his time in racing, from the early "big cars" to sprint cars, with drivers including Johnny Anderson and Mike Andreetta piloting his cars. Vermeil, who passed away in 1987, was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1995 for his work in sprint car racing. The Louie Vermeil Classic started as a USAC/CRA non-wing event, and NARC joined in 2019 to give the fans both winged 410 and wingless 410 sprint cars to watch. That 2019 Louie Vermeil Classic, the last at Calistoga, saw Dominic Scelzi and Rico Abreu score victories on the big half-mile. The 2021 edition at Silver Dollar Speedway saw Scelzi and Justin Sanders win the two NARC features that weekend. More than $130,000 in prize money and awards are up for grabs at this exciting two-day show. Saturday's feature event winner will pocket a $5000 payday. Sunday's winners will walk away with $10,000. WHO TO WATCH Things remain tight at the top of the NARC point standings, with just 16 points separating points leader D.J. Netto of Hanford and fourth place Bud Kaeding of Campbell. Netto is just five points ahead of leading Rookie of the Year candidate Tyler Thompson of Harrisburg, Oregon, while third place Sean Becker of Oroville is just seven points back of Thompson. Netto, the 2019 NARC champion, won two of the first three NARC races in 2025, but has not won since May 10th at Antioch Speedway. Netto has his share of Top 5 finishes but also has some unfortunate DNF's to go with it, but remains atop the standings. Thompson is still looking for his first career NARC victory, but has been very consistent, usually finishing the Top 10 each night. Thompson, however, has just parted ways with the Main Motorsports team and is unsure what car he will be driving this weekend. Dominic Gorden of Clovis is also expected to compete. Gorden, twice a NARC winner, won this year's Dave Bradway Jr Memorial and would like to add a Louie Vermeil win to his resume. Lincoln's Tanner Carrick, who recently matched his career best NARC finish with a runner-up at Ocean Speedway on August 2nd, is also entered and looks to earn his first NARC win at one of the biggest events of the season. In addition to Becker and Bud Kaeding, other drivers expected include Fremont's Shane Golobic, Hollister's Ryan Bernal, Roseville's Colby Copeland, Fresno area drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede, Benicia's Billy Aton, Oakley's Dylan Bloomfield, Auburn's Andy Forsberg, Gilroy's Jarrett Soares, Windsor's John Clark, Suisun City's Chance Grasty, and Rio Oso's Landon Brooks (Sunday only). NARC will have approximately 18 cars, with changes in travel plans for several teams. FAN INFO Calistoga Speedway is located at the Calistoga Fairgrounds at 1435 N Oak St. Seating will be limited due to high pre-race sales. Reserved seating is sold out for both nights, and some general admission tickets are available for Sunday. They can be purchased at www.racecalistoga.com. RV parking on site is also sold out. Parking is $10 (cash) each day. Fans are encouraged to get to the event early to allow time to park. The ticket booth opens at 1:00 p.m. The Berco Redwood Pavilion is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for race fans. There will be special wine and beer tasting events (must be 21 years of age), along with food and great music. Hot laps are scheduled for 5:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:30 for both classes. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 6:10 with racing at 6:30 both nights. NARC will run a 25-lap feature each night. Fans unable to attend can watch live on FloRacing. Friday night (August 29th) at the fairgrounds, the Calistoga Speedway Hall of Fame will induct six new members, one of them being NARC General Manager Jim Allen, whose association with NARC dates back to the 1980's. Frank Albert, Clyde Lamar, Rick Horton, Jim Hearn and Bobby McMahan will also be honored. More information on can also be found on www.racecalistoga.com. - NARC RETURNS TO OCEAN SPEEDWAY FOR 65TH ANNUAL JOHNNY KEY CLASSIC
(7/28/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... The NARC 410 Sprint Car Series will make its final visit of the season to Ocean Speedway on Saturday, August 2nd, when the series takes part in the 65th running of the Johnny Key Classic. The event honors a legendary driver who dominated California racing during the late 1940's and 1950's. It was 1952 where Key reportedly won an astounding 54 races in different classes of cars, and that included a 500-lap race at San Jose Speedway where he won by 18 laps. Key won numerous other races in sprint cars and midgets during his career and won several championships. Key lost his life at just 30 years of age in a midget crash in 1954 in Ohio. The Johnny Key Classic was first run in 1954, shortly after his passing, and was won by Danny Graves. It ran for decades under different lengths and formats, but it was run in San Jose until 1999. After a hiatus, the event was brought back in 2007 at Ocean Speedway as a 360 sprint car event. In 2025, the event became a 410 sprint car event under NARC sanctioning. Saturday's race will be the fourth for NARC at Ocean Speedway and will pay $5,000 to the winner of the 30-lap main event. Nick Rescino leads everyone with six Johnny Key Classic victories over the years. Howard Kaeding was a four-time winner while his legendary son Brent won it twice. Other past winners of the race in its various forms include Al Pombo, Clyde Palmer, Marshall Sargent and Mike Sargent, Burt Foland, Chuck Miller, Ronnie Day, Tommy Tarlton, and more recently the likes of Rico Abreu, Justin Sanders, Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Thorson, Shane Golobic and Dominic Scelzi. WHO TO WATCH Former NARC champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell will be one driver fans will be keeping an eye on. While he didn't win on either night at the Howard Kaeding Classic, Bud did lead laps in the main event on the first night before a treacherous cushion bit him and sent him off the track. Kaeding knows Ocean Speedway well and will look at it as an opportunity to get back in the win column in NARC competition aboard the BK Motorsports No. 29. After mechanical issues in his heat race last Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway, Kaeding earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award in the main event, moving up ten positions. Gauge Garcia of Lemoore won last year's Johnny Key Classic, its last as a 360 event. Garcia is still hunting his first 410 victory with NARC, and it would be ironic if that first win came in the event he previously won in something different. He and the Keller Motorsports No. 2k have dealt with motor issues throughout the season but have still shown speed throughout. D.J. Netto, another former NARC champion, has two wins on the season and took over the points lead Saturday at Santa Maria. The Hanford driver and the Netto Ag No. 88n turned in a fourth place run in Watsonville the other weekend but suffered a mechanical problem and dropped out of the feature in Santa Maria. Despite having the points lead, Netto is wanting to get back in the win column this weekend. Also expected to compete is Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson, who leads the NARC Rookie of the Year chase and had a podium finish at Ocean Speedway in May. Fresno drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede are expected to join, along with Oroville's Sean Becker, Dominic Gordon of Clovis, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery and John Clark from Windsor. Former track champion Kurt Nelson is a frequent participant when NARC visits his home track as well. FAN INFO Ocean Speedway is located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville, at 2601 E Lake Ave. Front gates open at 3:30 p.m. with racing scheduled 6:00 p.m. Also joining NARC to race on Saturday will be IMCA modifieds, IMCA sport mods and BCRA lightning sprints. Saturday's event concludes the "Cooler Weather Tour," the recent stretch of races for NARC all scheduled along the California coast and featuring comfortable temperatures for teams and fans. After a break allowing NARC teams to go to the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa and High Limit events happening after that in California, NARC returns to action when it visits the reopening Calistoga Speedway for the Louie Vermeil Classic on Saturday and Sunday, August 30th and 31st. The Northern Auto Racing Club is the premier 410 winged sprint car series in the western United States. Since 1960, the traveling organization has thrilled fans at dirt tracks up and down the West Coast and crowned a "King of the West" champion. - THE NARC SPRINT CARS ARE HEADED TO THE "SHOWDOWN AT SANTA MARIA" ON SATURDAY
(7/21/25 - Andrew Kunas) Santa Maria, CA ... -The "Cooler Weather Tour" continues for the NARC King of the West 410 sprint car series this Saturday, July 26th, when the series makes its annual visit to Santa Maria Speedway for the "Showdown at Santa Maria." Santa Maria Speedway, for most of its history that goes back to 1964, has been a regular stop for sprint cars, winged and non-wing. The track had faced closure a couple of times over the years, but recently got back up and running again and in 2024 it returned to the NARC schedule after a three-year absence. Last year's NARC event saw a wild finish in which Justyn Cox tangled with a slower car and flipped upside down on the final lap, costing him a victory. Chase Johnson took advantage and picked up his fourth career NARC win. He was joined on the podium by Kaleb Montgomery and Gauge Garcia, a pair of drivers worth keeping an eye on this Saturday. Montgomery is still hunting for his first NARC victory but has shown flashes at times. Montgomery, who lives just up the road from Santa Maria Speedway in Templeton, has turned in strong runs this season, including finishing fifth and sixth respectively during last weekend's Howard Kaeding Classic at Ocean Speedway. Finishing runner-up at Santa Maria last year and having won the USAC/CRA non-wing race at the same track in May, Montgomery could see this Saturday's race as the one where he gets his first NARC win. Garcia, from Lemoore, is also still searching for a NARC win. He and the Paso Robles-based Keller Motorsports No. 2k team have fought motor problems throughout the season, but have performed well in several main events, often passing many cars and on four occasions this season Garcia earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger award. Before last year's return to Santa Maria, the last NARC race at Santa Maria Speedway was in 2021, and it was Benicia's Billy Aton who scored his first NARC victory that night. Saturday's event is part of NARC's "Cooler Weather Tour," as some have called it, the current stretch of events for the series happening at tracks along the California coast, where race teams and fans can expect more comfortable temperatures while it is typically very hot in the California interior. WHO ELSE TO WATCH Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson has quietly put together a very solid and consistent season as he chases the NARC Rookie of the Year award aboard the Main Motorsports No. 35km. In 15 regular NARC events (not counting the special format seeing inverted main event fields at Skagit Speedway's Super Dirt Cup in June), Thompson recorded ten Top 10 finishes in those races, many of which had been at tracks he hadn't seen before. His best run was a third place finish on May 16th at Ocean Speedway, and in that race Thompson briefly challenged eventual race winner Justin Sanders for the lead. Thompson sits third overall in the points and has twice posted quick time in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying, twice won a heat race and twice earned the hard charger nod. Many have recently begun looking at Thompson as another driver due to make a big breakthrough in 410 sprint car competition. Former NARC champion D.J. Netto of Hanford, twice a winner this season and second in the points entering the weekend, along with 2005 NARC champion Sean Becker from Oroville, and 2019 series king Bud Kaeding from Campbell will fill out a stellar line-up of competitors. Others expected to compete include Fresno drivers Caeden Steele and Mariah Ede, Dominic Gorden from Clovis, Kansas driver Jace Park, Hollister's Ryan Bernal, and many others. FAN INFO Santa Maria Speedway is located at 1900 Hutton Road, right off of Hwy 101, in Nipomo, just north of Santa Maria itself. Tickets are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors 65+, military and students ages 11 to 17. Kids 10 and under are free. Front gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Also scheduled to race are IMCA Racesaver sprints, BCRA lightning sprints and dwarf cars. - Strong Weekend For Forsberg Highlighted By Friday Night Win
Taking part in the opening two rounds of SCCT Speedweek, Andy Forsberg raced to a win on Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway and backed it up with a third place run at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night.
- Andy Forsberg becomes first 3-time winner of the Tyler Wolf Memorial to open Speedweek
Chico, CA…Reigning SCCT Speedweek champion Andy Forsberg endured a wild 35-lap feature in front of a large and vocal crowd on Friday night, becoming the first three-time winner of the Tyler Wolf Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway. The victory marked Forsberg's seventh career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour triumph and came aboard his familiar Pacific Highway Rentals/ Oroville Tax No. 92 mount. It was also the Auburn veteran's first win at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico since 2021. "Racing on these types of tracks isn't exactly my cup of a tea, but I just focused on being smooth, hitting my marks and hoped the guys in front of me wore out their tires," Forsberg said afterwards. "I can't say enough for about my team for working their tails off and giving me a great car. Thank you to all the fans for packing this place tonight and we hope to see you back at the Gold Cup next month." Sacramento youngster Austin Wood was the story for much of the night after setting the Sierra Foothills Wine Services Fast Time, before claiming the Tiner-Hirst Ent. Heat Race and the High Sierra Industries Dash. Wood jumped out front at the waving of the green flag and distanced himself from the rest of the field. After about 15-laps however, track conditions began to change as rubber came down, and made tire wear a prevalent factor in the outcome. Drivers continued to race hard throughout the field however and kept fans on the edge of their seats. Modesto's Tony Gomes moved into the second spot and began to reel in the leader after several circuts. Following a caution with nine laps to go the ensuing restart brough drama as Gomes grabbed the lead by slicing the inside of Wood, who slowed that same lap as his right rear tire went down. Wood's bid at a clean sweep ended in heartbreak with him driving back to the pit area. With Gomes up front now it brought Auburn's Andy Forsberg into the second spot and Northwest drver Kinzer Cox in third. As more tire issues continued for several cars the final caution of the feature waved with six circuits remaining. During the last restart Forsberg stayed tucked to Gomes' tail tank and then shot to his inside, making it a side-by-side battle for the top spot. Coming to the line to click off lap 32 it was Forsberg now up front. Seconds after that Gomes slowed with a flat right rear tire, as did a few other drivers. With Forsberg up front he had Cox right there with him down to the wire. As the leaders rounded turn four the final time, another car lost the right rear tire just ahead of their path. Both the front runners did a great job to take evasive action, moving down and crossing the stripe with Forsberg claiming the win just ahead of Cox. Cox, hailing from Cottage Grove, Oregon was making just his fourth career Silver Dollar Speedway start and did an exceptional job to record a stellar runner up finish. He will be a certain favorite over the remainder of Speedweek. Sacramento's DJ Freitas also did an impressive job saving his tires and weaving through traffic to claim his first career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour podium in third. Freitas won the B-main and carved his way from 20th to take home the Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Award. Yuba City's Steele Powell must also be commended for an excellent drive, as he moved forward late to tally his best ever finish with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour in fourth. Braden Chiaramonte rebounded beautifully after suffering a flat tire with six laps left. The El Cajon driver went to the work area and charged all the way back to round out the top five. Completing the top 10 at the Tyler Wolf Memorial were Jennifer Osborne, Aydan Saunders, Max Mittry, Levi Klatt and Adrianna Demartini. A total of 34 cars competed on night one of Speedweek. SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek continues tonight at Placerville Speedway for the $5,000-to-win Gold Pan Rampage. - JUSTIN SANDERS SURVIVES, WINS WILD NARC HK CLASSIC OPENER
(7/18/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... Justin Sanders emerged victorious after one of the wildest NARC sprint car main events of the season Friday, taking the opening night feature of the Howard Kaeding Classic at Ocean Speedway. Sanders inherited the lead with eight laps completed when early leader Bud Kaeding was bit by the treacherous cushion in Turn 1 and was sent flying off the track. Sanders led the rest of the 30-lapper for his NARC-leading fifth race of the season, but had to fend off Bud's brother Tim Kaeding along the way and wait through several cautions and red flags before finally taking the checkered flag. It was the second NARC win at Ocean Speedway this season for Sanders, who also captured the May 16th event at the Watsonville clay oval. Sanders won last year's Howard Kaeding Classic, his second HK win overall, but while Saturday's finale remains, it was special for Sanders still to take the win on the first night of a now two-night event that previously had honored the patriarch of the Kaeding Family as a special event guest since 2011. This year's event, however, took on special meaning with Howard passing away during the off-season. Out front after Bud Kaeding's misfortune, Sanders early on was challenged by Tim Kaeding, but found his groove and managed his way around the challenging top side of the race track. Despite the many cautions and red flags, of which there were five, Sanders still had to deal with slower traffic on occasion. Sanders managed to hold off a determined Tim in the closing laps for the win aboard the Yuba Sutter Aviation-sponsored Mittry Motorsports No. 2x Fisher-powered KPC. The $5,000 victory went with Sanders' other NARC Ocean win, a pair of wins at Silver Dollar Speedway, and a Dirt Cup preliminary at Skagit Speedway. Friday's Howard Kaeding Classic opener was probably the one that required the most patience out of Sanders this season. Tim Kaeding, racing in memory of his grandfather, finished second aboard the Emadco Disposal-sponsored Williams Motorsports No. 0 Maxwill-powered Maxim. Kaeding, one of California's most accomplished sprint car racers following his grandfather Howard and father Brent, thanked teams and fans for their support of the event this weekend. Kaeding though will now be focused on bettering his position by one spot on Saturday in an event he has not won before and will want to add to his already impressive resume. Behind Sanders and Kaeding, there were constant battles for and shuffling of positions throughout the Top 10. Dylan Bloomfield turned in one of his best finishes of the season after starting eighth. He battled with former NARC champion Sean Becker to move into fourth place and late in the race he battled with and passed another former NARC champion in D.J. Netto to move into third, and finished there aboard the Silva's All Natural Beef-sponsored Vertullo Racing No. 83v Kistler-powered Maxim. After being bit by the Turn 1 cushion and spinning out, Bud Kaeding went to the work area before returning to the track and racing his way back up to finish 12th. Bud, also one of California's most accomplished sprint car racers following his father and grandfather, is a two-time Howard Kaeding Classic winner but will be looking for a special third HK win on Saturday. Netto, who entered the event with the NARC points lead, finished fourth aboard the Penny Newman Grain-sponsored Netto Ag No. 88n Rider-powered KPC. Kaleb Montgomery, another driver who raced hard throughout, came from 13th and made late passes to secure fifth place aboard the Luxon Real Estate-sponsored Montgomery Racing No. 3 Speedway-powered Maxim. Becker, after starting tenth, bounced back from a crash last Saturday at Petaluma Speedway and finished sixth, followed by Nick Parker and the 14th starting Tyler Thompson. Tanner Carrick earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger nod, coming from 18th to finish ninth. Dominic Gorden came back from a trip to the work area to round out the Top 10. Bud Kaeding won the Beacon Wealth Strategies - Raymond James Trophy Dash to secure the pole position for the feature event, with Sanders starting outside him. The Winters Performance Last Chance Qualifier was won by Jesse Schlotfeldt, who took Dominic Scelzi, Billy Aton and Jason Chisum with him to the feature race. Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Bud Kaeding, Gauge Garcia, Shane Golobic and Tim Kaeding. Bloomfield paced the 30-car field in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying with a time of 10.763 seconds around the ¼-mile clay oval, topping the second flight in a split field. That narrowly bettered Landon Brooks, who paced the first flight with a 10.768-second lap. - SCCT ready to tackle Western Sprint Tour Speedweek on July 18th-27th
Chico, CA…For the second consecutive season the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour is primed for Western Sprint Tour Speedweek, which showcases eight nights of racing at seven different venues from California to Washington. Everything kicks off in a big way at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway this Friday July 18th with the 12th annual "Tyler Wolf Memorial" race. It will be a definite highlight of Speedweek, as we honor the late racer. It also doubles as Fan Appreciation Night, with grandstand tickets costing just $5. Kids 12 and under will be free. When 20-year-old Tyler Wolf lost his life at Calistoga Speedway in 2012, it was one of the darkest days in recent memory for the California racing scene. The Redding native had captured the Silver Dollar Speedway track title one year prior and was well liked throughout the pit area. The event in his memory continues to be one of the special shows each season at Silver Dollar Speedway and is the only SCCT visit of 2025. One night later Speedweek rolls on with the $5,000-to-win/ $500-to-start "Gold Pan Rampage" at Placerville Speedway on Saturday July 19th. It marks the final Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour appearance of the season at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds quarter mile. Monday July 21st begins a trio of races in Oregon all starting at the Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg. Tuesday July 22nd then brings the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to Coos Bay Speedway, followed by Cottage Grove Speedway on Wednesday July 23rd. A travel day with a Fan Fest/ Kick-Off Party on Thursday sets up the SCCT debut at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington for the two-night "Fred Brownfield 360 Nationals" presented by Bob's Burgers & Brew, highlighted by a $26,000-to-win/ $1,000-to-start main event on Saturday July 26th. With a unique format on tap at Skagit Speedway, both nights will feature show up points only in the season-long championship race. SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek all comes to a climax on Sunday July 27th at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. The "Hall of Fame 360 Battle Royale" marks the first series appearance at the track. The overall SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek champion will take home $4,000 as part of an $8,000 total point fund. The runner up nets $2,500 while third place will claim $1,500. Each Shop Kyle Larson main event during Speedweek will hand out a minimum of $3,000-to-win/ $400-to-start the 24-car field. After winning the most recent event, 18-year-old Chance Grasty sits atop the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour standings heading into Speedweek. Sacramento's Austin Wood, Montana driver Cole Schroeder, Yuba City's Seth Standley and Marysville's Dawson Hammes complete the top five. - $80,000+ IN PRIZE MONEY ON THE LINE FOR NARC SPRINT CARS AT HOWARD KAEDING CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND
(7/14/25 - Andrew Kunas) Watsonville, CA ... One of the most special events of the season for the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series is next when it visits Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, this Friday and Saturday (July 18-19), for the 15th Annual Howard Kaeding Classic. The event honors the patriarch of the famed Kaeding family that includes his Hall of Fame son Brent, and grandsons Bud and Tim. HK, as he was known to his friends, was a champion racer in his own right, most especially at the old San Jose Speedway where he won several championships and at one point famously won 17 consecutive races. The race saluting the "Campbell Comet" was already a staple in the California 410 sprint car schedule, but this year's event has taken on special meaning with Howard passing away in February at the age of 92. Before Howard's passing, it was already announced that this year's event would be a two-night show. Now in just the last couple of weeks it was announced that Saturday's purse will see an increase, with the main event paying $10,000 to win ($1,500 to start A), while Friday's show pays a neat $5,000 ($750 to start A.) This was made possible by many generous sponsorships from companies with ties to the Kaeding family and the racing community. WHO TO WATCH With the added special meaning to the event, not to mention the now five-figure payday on the final night, many of the top drivers on the West Coast will be competing hard for victories. Reigning "King of the West" Justin Sanders of Aromas won his second Howard Kaeding Classic last year, one of his seven victories on his way to the 2024 NARC title. Sanders has four NARC wins to his credit this season, including a win at Ocean Speedway in May, but is locked in a tight points race atop the standings with former series champion D.J. Netto of Hanford, who is just one point ahead of Sanders. Netto, meanwhile, has never won a Kaeding Classic and would love to add one to his resume. Of course, no racer out there would love to win this weekend more than brothers Tim and Bud Kaeding, who will be racing with heavy hearts at the race honoring their grandfather. Bud has twice won the HK, picking up wins in 2014 and 2019. Tim picked up his 75th career NARC victory on Saturday at Petaluma Speedway and like his father and grandfather is one of the most accomplished sprint car racers ever from California. He has never won a Howard Kaeding Classic and Tim no doubt wants to get that first one this Saturday. Fremont's Shane Golobic, the 2023 Howard Kaeding Classic winner, is expected to compete, along with 2021 winner Sean Becker or Oroville. Tyler Thompson of Harrisburg, Oregon continues his search for his first NARC win but still sits third in points and leads the NARC Rookie of the Year chase. Fresno's Caeden Steele, a first-time NARC winner in May, had an impressive run at last Saturday's Petaluma event and will look to build off of that this weekend. Other drivers expected to race this weekend include two-time series champ Dominic Scelzi of Fresno, Lemoore's Gauge Garcia, Billy Aton of Benicia, Fresno's Mariah Ede, Dominic Gorden of Clovis, and Tucson's Nick Parker. The Howard Kaeding Classic was first held in 2011 with Evan Suggs picking up the win. NARC great Jonathan Allard won the next two. Kyle Hirst leads all drivers with three wins in the prestigious event. Colby Copeland and current World of Outlaws standout Buddy Kofoid each have single HK victories as well. FAN INFO Ocean Speedway is on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, located at 2601 E Lake Ave. Friday's show will have sport mods and hobby stocks in action also. On Saturday, NARC will be joined by the BCRA/WMR midgets, hobby stocks and modifieds. Qualifying will get underway at 5:30 p.m. with opening ceremonies at approximately 6:00 p.m. The pit gate opens at 2:00 p.m. After the races on Friday there will be an "After Party" on the track grounds. There will also be the Howard Kaeding Luncheon on Saturday that will see proceeds benefiting the NARC Benevolent Fund. This is all part of the Howard Kaeding Classic weekend at Ocean Speedway. This weekend's races are of the "Cooler Weather Tour," a stretch of races for NARC all taking place at tracks along the California coast and all expecting to have more comfortable coastal temperatures while the California interior bakes in summer heat. July 26th will see NARC make its annual visit to Santa Maria Speedway, before the series returns to Ocean Speedway on August 2nd for the Johnny Key Classic. - NARC INVADES PETALUMA SPEEDWAY FOR $5,200 TO WIN DAVE LINDT MEMORIAL
(7/7/25 - Andrew Kunas) Petaluma, CA ... After a well-earned break following a very busy month of June, the NARC 410 sprint car series kicks off another busy stretch of racing on Saturday night, when the series makes its annual visit to Petaluma Speedway for the 2nd Annual Dave Lindt Memorial. The event honors Lindt, who was Petaluma Speedway's winningest driver ever, scoring 48 feature victories and earning five track championships along the way as he dominated weekly action at the track in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Lindt was known for his blue No. 52 sprint car, matching his high school colors and his football jersey number. Saturday's NARC main event will pay $5,200 to win in his memory. Saturday's show marks the first of four consecutive weeks of racing for NARC, the stretch nicknamed by some as the "cooler weather tour" as it is all at tracks along the Pacific coast, which should feature more comfortable weather conditions for racers and fans while the California interior bakes in summer heat. Former NARC champion Sean Becker of Oroville won the inaugural Dave Lindt Memorial last July after a late race battle with young Oakley driver Dylan Bloomfield. It was the last time the "Shark" visited victory lane in NARC competition. POINTS BATTLE & WHO TO WATCH After an eventful trip last month to the Pacific Northwest, there is a tie at the top of the NARC point standings, with reigning "King of the West" Justin Sanders of Aromas and former series champion D.J. Netto of Hanford neck and neck at 1,890 points apiece. Both drivers have multiple NARC victories on the season, Sanders with four and Netto with two, and both had their share of bad luck this year, including Netto getting upside down on consecutive nights during the Fastest Five Days in Motorsports. After their respective roller coaster rides, they are both at the top as NARC begins its summer swing. Sanders has had momentum on his side of late, picking up two NARC wins last month including a $10,000 preliminary night win at the Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway before taking fifth in the Saturday finale against a tough field of racers. Sanders finished second to Becker at last year's Dave Lindt Memorial. Things are tight in general toward the top of the point standings, with just 20 points separating the Top 5. Former NARC champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, though winless, is quietly having a solid season and is only 11 points out of the lead. Just three points behind Kaeding is Harrisburg, Oregon's Tyler Thompson, who is leading the NARC Rookie of the Year chase and has shown some flashes as well, picking up multiple fast qualifier awards, twice earning the hard charger nod, and challenging for a win at Ocean Speedway in May. Becker is only 20 points behind the leaders and at times has shown himself as a threat to win this season, most notably at Antioch Speedway in May when he led laps in the main event before a crash knocked him out of contention. Having last won at last year's Dave Lindt Memorial, Becker looks to get back in the win column this Saturday with a second straight Lindt triumph. Dominic Gorden of Clovis got his second career NARC victory on May 31st at the Dave Bradway Jr Memorial at Placerville Speedway. Gorden currently sits sixth in the point standings and hopes to get a second 410 victory for the season Saturday in Petaluma. A full field of 410 sprint cars are expected to compete at the 16th event on the ultra-competitive 27-race NARC schedule. To date, 15 races have produced nine different winners! FAN INFO Petaluma Speedway is located on the Petaluma Fairgrounds at 100 Fairgrounds Drive. Front gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. General admission for adults is $25, with juniors 12-16, seniors 65+ and military in for $22. Kids ages 6 to 11 are in for just $10. The Redwood Dwarf Cars, mini-stocks and hobby stocks are all scheduled to race on Saturday night with NARC. - SANDERS SLIPS PAST MCFADDEN IN FINAL CORNER TO TAKE SUPER DIRT CUP NARC PRELIM WIN
(6/20/25 - Andrew Kunas) Burlington, WA ... The second night of the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway delivered a finish as thrilling as the first, as Justin Sanders got his fourth NARC sprint car victory of the season Friday night with a last lap pass to get the $10,000 win. The reigning NARC "King of the West" champion started the 30-lap feature inside the second row and ran in third place for most of the race, while Washington sprint car great Jason Solwold led the opening six laps from the pole position. A bobble by Solwold exiting Turn 4 on the seventh circuit allowed Australian star James McFadden to get by to take the lead. McFadden, who started fourth, led from there and encountered traffic at times before timely cautions would clear the track for him. In one instance, Solwold was able to challenge McFadden and nearly passed him, but McFadden held on to the top spot. In the closing laps, Sanders found a groove, making the pass around Solwold for second with just three laps left. He then immediately went after Sanders. Coming around Turns 3 and 4, Sanders made the bottom of the track work, getting a run down the front stretch at the white flag. McFadden went low in Turns 1 and 2, but Sanders went top side and drove around him to take the lead entering the back stretch on the final lap. McFadden tried to run low into Turn 3, but Sanders barely slammed the door shut as they entered the turn, and McFadden couldn't find a way back by as Sanders took the victory in front of a thrilled Skagit Speedway crowd. "I think the bottom was going away in 1 and 2. Solwold got to James and got him searching, and I think it slowed up enough up there and I just airmailed it up top in 1 and 2," Sanders said. "I'm out of breath. I drove that thing as hard as I could. I just kinda put something together in those last five laps and like I said I just drove it as hard as I could. I'm in awe that I pulled that off." Sanders, the 2023 Dirt Cup winner, again praised his team, including owner Demo Mittry. This continued the strong run Sanders had been on recently aboard the Yuba Sutter Aviation-sponsored Mittry Motorsports No. 2x Fisher-powered KPC after a roller coaster spring. In the last couple of weeks, Sanders won the David Tarter Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway on June 7th, then finished Top 10 each night in NARC's Fastest Five Days in Motorsports last week, including three podium runs, and then getting fourth in the Thursday Dirt Cup preliminary before scoring the Friday victory. With the win, Sanders was fourth in overall points after the two preliminary nights in the special Dirt Cup points format and locked himself in Saturday's pole shuffle. McFadden, while disappointed with letting one slip away, still had a strong bounce back night after getting upside down twice in Thursday's main event, taking second place aboard the American Rock & Rent-sponsored Tarlton Motorsports No. 21t Kistler-powered Maxim. This continued his overall strong performance since jumping into that car over a week over, having won four of the five races in the Fastest Five Days. Tanner Holmes came from the tenth starting position and moved into the Top 5 as the race progressed. He eventually was in fourth place and in the last laps got Solwold to finish third aboard the Legacy Builder Supply-sponsored Holmes Racing No. 18t Rider-powered Triple X. After his fifth place run on Thursday and being second overall in points after the two preliminary nights, Holmes also locked himself into Saturday's pole shuffle. Solwold, the many-time Skagit Speedway champion and former World of Outlaws feature winner, finished fourth aboard the KarMart USA-sponsored Shaylen Raye Motorsports No. 18 Parker-powered Triple X. Joel Meyers Jr finished fifth aboard the Dirt Dudes Excavating-sponsored Willie Kahne No. 4 Shaver-powered Triple X. Trey Starks came from 12th to finish sixth and was top overall in the Dirt Cup points, and locking into the pole shuffle as a result. Coming from 15th to finish seventh, Shane Golobic also locked into the shuffle. Jesse Schlotfeldt came from 16th to finish eighth, followed by Scott Bogucki. Landon Brooks came out of the B-Main and advanced 13 positions from 23rd to finish tenth and earn the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award. Dominic Gorden won the Winters Performance Last Chance Qualifier, taking Justin Peck, Brooks and Dominic Scelzi with him to the Friday preliminary main event. Luke Didiuk won the C-Feature. Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Camden Robustelli, Justin Youngquist, Gorden, Cam Smith and Brent Marks. Jesse Schlotfeldt paced the 44-car field in Automotive Racing Products Qualifying, touring the 3/10-mile clay oval in 11.250 seconds. The 53rd Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup concludes Saturday with the main event paying $100,026 to win. Points from Thursday and Friday will be combined to largely set up lineups for Saturday's races. Starks, Holmes, Golobic and Sanders are locked into the pole shuffle and will be joined by the winners of the four qualifier races. - Chance Grasty strikes late at Petaluma Speedway for first SCCT win
Petaluma, CA…Chance Grasty took advantage of lapped traffic late in the going to slip past Andy Forsberg and record his initial victory with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour on Saturday. His triumph at Petaluma Speedway came aboard the familiar Friends & Family Racing/ Bushey Financial Services X1 mount. It marked Grasty's second career Sprint Car win, after claiming victory in Stockton earlier this season and allowed him to take over the SCCT point lead. "That one got pretty exciting once we could get some green flag laps put together," commented the 17-year-old. "I was fortunately able to get by Andy Forsberg and the lapped car with about five laps to go and just focused on hitting my marks after that. I want to thank everyone with the F&F X1 team for their support and all you fans for filling this place tonight." Reigning Elk Grove Ford SCCT champion Andy Forsberg claimed the High Sierra Industries Dash to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature. The Auburn veteran climbed out front at the waving of the green flag and held command for much of the race. Numerous cautions and slowdowns were seen throughout the first part, which created a fuel stop on lap 18 and kept racers out of lapped traffic for much of it. The final half of the race then clicked off problem free though and allowed the leaders to bunch up. Forsberg began to feel pressure from Grasty, along with Sacramento's Austin Wood who closed in on the top two late in the going. Racing through turns one and two on lap 29, Forsberg caught a lapped car at just the wrong moment, while Grasty made a beautiful move down low to get by for the top spot. As the white flag waved Forsberg closed back in, but Grasty hung strong and crossed under the checkered for his first ever Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour win. The Suisun City driver also began the evening by claiming the Sierra Foothills Wine Services Fast Time Award with a lap of 12.929, topping the 24-car field. Forsberg's strong run netted him a runner up finish, marking his third result of second or better in SCCT action. All four of his Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour starts have ended on the podium, as the 28-time California champ continues his fantastic campaign. Wood rounded out the podium to record yet another consistent finish this season and by doing so, moved to second in the series standings. Cotati's Jake Haulot and Bozeman, Montana's Cole Schroeder both put together solid outings to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Completing the top 10 at Petaluma Speedway on Saturday were Roseville's Jodie Robinson, Salinas' Caleb Debem, Dunnigan's Luke Hayes, Livermore's Travis Labat and Sebastopol's Bradley Terrell. Debem, the current Ocean Speedway point leader, earned the Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Award in the feature. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour will now have a month off before resuming things with Western Sprint Tour Speedweek. It all gets underway with the annual Tyler Wolf Memorial at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday July 18th. - JESSE SCHLOTFELDT BAGS FIRST NARC WIN AT COTTAGE GROVE
Jesse Schlotfeldt scored the biggest win of his career when he earned his first career NARC 410 sprint car main event victory, taking the checkered flag in Friday's Fastest Five Days in Motorsports checkered flag at Cottage Grove Speedway. It did not come easy for Schlotfeldt, who had to fight his way through traffic throughout the 30-lap event. Starting alongside pole sitter Tanner Holmes, Schlotfeldt got the better start on the green flag and immediately took the lead. He put distance between himself and Holmes in the opening laps but soon found himself in traffic that was at times heavy and also holding him up. As the laps ticked away, Holmes on numerous instances closed in as Schlotfeldt struggled at times to pass slower cars but couldn't make anything happen at first. As they completed the 24th lap at the line, Holmes had a run off of Turn 4 and Schlotfeldt slapped the wall as they approached Turn 1. Holmes threw it down low and moved up to briefly take the top spot, but Schlotfeldt had gathered himself back up and immediately turned his car back down off of Turn 2 as Holmes drifted up, retaking the lead down the back stretch. Holmes then slapped the front stretch wall himself on the next lap, and Schlotfeldt remained up front. Thanks to a late caution, Schlotfeldt had a clear track in front of him for a few more laps, and only had one slow car trying clear on the next to last lap on his way to his first NARC win aboard the Grinder's Automotive & Marine-sponsored JRS Motorsports No. 21s Shark-powered Triple X. "It feels good to finally click off the first win in the NARC series, and first win at (Cottage Grove) too. I've had a lot of bad luck here, wrecking some cars here. I'm glad I couldn't (finally) put it up front for my boys," said Schlotfeldt, who was happy to get the NARC victory but also to shake off his Cottage Grove jinx. He praised his crew for his car's performance as well. "The car was on rails. I smoked the wall a couple of times, and I was just holding on for dear life there at the end. I can't thank my guys enough." After hitting the wall himself, Holmes lost two positions immediately after but benefited from the timely caution flag for a stopped car that reverted the field to 25 laps completed, putting Holmes back in front of Dominic Gorden and Justin Sanders who both had passed him. Despite concern for his right rear tire after the wall contact, Holmes continued to run second and finished there aboard the Legacy Builder Supply-sponsored Holmes Racing No. 18t Rider-powered Triple X. Sanders made a late pass around Gorden to finish third, giving him podium finishes in all three races this week aboard the Yuba Sutter Aviation-sponsored Mittry Motorsports No. 2x Fisher-powered KPC. Those three podium finishes follow his win last Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway and continued his hot streak and rise back towards the top of the NARC point standings. Friends with Schlotfeldt, Sanders was one of the first to congratulate him on his first win. Gorden finished fourth aboard the Gary Silva Ranches sponsored Fortitude Driver Development No. 10 Rider-powered Maxim. Dominic Scelzi, who had podium finishes the first two nights this week, finished fifth in the Red Rose Transportation-sponsored Scelzi Enterprises No. 41 Kistler-powered Maxim. Australian star James McFadden, won the first two races of the Fastest Five Days in Motorsports, Wednesday at Southern Oregon Speedway and Thursday at Douglas County Dirt Track, couldn't make it a hat trick Friday, but still earned the Williams Roofing Hard Charger Award with his run from 13th to finish sixth. Landon Brooks, Sean Becker, D.J. Netto and Caeden Steele rounded out the Top 10. Heat races earlier in the evening were won by Scelzi, Gorden and Robbie Price. Holmes then won the Beacon Wealth Strategies - Raymond James Trophy Dash to secure the pole position for the main event. - Petaluma Speedway welcomes SCCT for Wings Over Wine Country this Saturday
Petaluma, CA…The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour campaign rolls on with its first appearance of the season at the cool confines of Petaluma Speedway this Saturday June 14th. The show dubbed as "Wings Over Wine Country" marks the fifth event for the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour this year. It's the first of two season stops at Petaluma Speedway, with a return visit occurring for the annual Adobe Cup in September. Please note the facility features an earlier start time, with the Pit Meeting at 3:45pm and cars on track at 4pm. "We look forward to having the Sprint Car Challenge Tour here at Petaluma Speedway on Saturday," commented track Promoter Rick Faeth. "It will be our first traveling Winged Sprint Car show of the season, and I know our fans are hungry for it. Hopefully everyone can come out and join us for the night." The show at Sonoma County's longest running entertainment venue is the final SCCT race prior to Western Sprint Tour Speedweek, which gets underway on July 18th in Chico. Wings Over Wine Country this Saturday will award $3,000-to-win/ $400-to-start the Shop Kyle Larson main event. Petaluma Speedway is always a welcome stop for race fans around Northern California. The 3/8 mile clay oval routinely yields thrilling wheel-to-wheel competition, as lapped traffic can create some of the most hectic action of any venue on tour. Auburn's Andy Forsberg is the most recent winner in Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour competition, having snagged the Davy Thomas Memorial on May 30th. The two-time SCCT champion also claimed the Adobe Cup at Petaluma Speedway last September in Petaluma. "I always enjoy going to Petaluma Speedway and hope to see a full house on Saturday with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour," commented Forsberg. "We've been running well, which certainly gives me confidence going into the night. Petaluma only holds Winged Sprint Car races on a limited basis nowadays so that always makes it special to get down there." More drivers looking to take home the top prize will include Suisun City's Chance Grasty, Sacramento's Austin Wood, Yuba City's Seth Standley, Montana racer Cole Schroeder, Marysville's Dawson and Carson Hammes, Livermore's Travis Labat, Cotati's Jake Haulot, Brentwood's Adriana Demartini, Dunnigan's Luke Hayes and others. Tickets and Details: Grandstand seating is general admission this Saturday June 14th at Petaluma Speedway. Adult tickets cost $25; while seniors 65 and older, juniors ages 12-16 and military are $22. Kids 6-11 cost $10 and those five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on race day or ahead of time via https://www.myracepass.com/tracks/1869/tickets/1440441 The pit gate will open at noon, with the front gate opening at 4pm. The pit meeting will be held at 3:45pm with cars on track at 4. Hot laps, Sierra Foothills Wine Services qualifying and racing will follow. The Petaluma Speedway is located in the southern part of the wine country at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds just off Highway 101 in Petaluma, California.
